Greetings from Iowa City! Fall is here, and it is time to enjoy the Iowa Football games and our remarkable tailgate hosted by the College of Dentistry. I hope to see you around this magnificent atmosphere. We had a very successful 2019 AAE Annual meeting in Montreal. All residents did a great job representing our advanced program. Kudos to them, to our program director and faculty for putting all together. Dr. Mikaela Hazard and Dr. Jered Vislisel received awards for their oral presentations. It was a magnificent achievement, considering the level of performance at the meeting. We had a total of 875 presentations, and the University of Iowa had two winners among the top 10 in the oral presentation category. Dr. Williamson will cover the details of the residents’ participation and outcome. Importantly, Dr. Keith Krell, adjunct professor of the department and current AAE president, received the “2019 Journal of Endodontics Award”, the best manuscript of the year in the clinical category. Congratulations, Dr. Krell! They all did a superb job and made all of us very proud to be a Hawkeye. It was good to see several alums at our gathering in Montreal. We appreciate you taking the time to stop by our reception. We are looking forward to seeing you again at the 2020 Annual meeting in Nashville, which will be Dr. Krell’s meeting as President of the AAE. We will provide all the details of our reception in the Spring newsletter. Stay tuned.

The department continues to grow and maintaining its conceptual productivity. We recently appointed Dr. Lauren Jensen as an official member of our family. She is currently serving as a Clinical Assistant Professor and continues to thrive in the critical areas of our mission: education, patient care, and research. We have now six full-time educators being four Board-certified and one Board eligible endodontist. We also have a new adjunct faculty member, Dr. Brittany Kawas. She has recently graduated and joined a practice in Wisconsin. She has already come back to teach. Maria Hennes has also joined us as front desk staff. She is very busy and interacting daily with a great mentor and friend, Ruby Kern. Dr. Cucco is the newly appointed director of the Summer Fellowship. We continue to have suitable applications to the program, which allows 1-week interaction between the faculty and potential candidates to our advanced program. Importantly, we have two excellent research-intensive faculty members allocated in our department, Drs. David Drake and Huojun Cao. Dr. David Drake was named to the 2019 Class of AADR Fellows and the National Institutes of Health awarded Dr. Huojun Cao a 2-year grant for his project, “Computational Method for Identification of Master Transcription Factors in Craniofacial Tissues.” Congratulations, Drs. Drake and Cao! I want to say a special thank you to all of you. You are all terrific individuals, and we couldn’t do it without you. Best regards, Fabricio
