Capital Campaign Committee Chair

The Capital Campaign Committee is charged with planning and executing the capital campaign to raise funds for paying off College Church’s real-estate debt and refurbishing or repurposing church property. The committee members have been meeting once a month to make plans and work on next steps. I joined the committee in January after Noah Helm stepped down as chairman due to his family’s move to Indiana. We met in January and February but elected not to meet in March due to the Illinois stay-at-home order, which had not yet been implemented but was clearly pending at that time. Once the order went into effect and it was clear the COVID-19 outbreak was going to have long-term financial ramifications that would extend well beyond the immediate healthcare crisis, committee members agreed that a change in focus was called for. In recent weeks, with guidance from the Council of Elders, the Capital Campaign Committee has been formulating a revised campaign that takes into account the new financial realities the church and the congregation are facing. In light of overall budgetary adjustments, the committee is prioritizing debt retirement and urgent infrastructure needs over fartherlooking needs such as a major refurbishment of the Crossings building (Toms-Price). While we look forward to eventually raising enough money to meet all the church’s capital needs, at this time it seems wiser to focus on shortterm needs and revisit long-term goals at a later time. We anticipate rolling out the revised campaign in the coming months. Meanwhile, we rely on the Lord’s provision and give thanks for what he is already accomplishing through the congregation’s regular giving.

Soli Deo Gloria!
