EDITORs LETTER My dear readers, I’m here. Paris that is. 10:30 am, Day 1 of a month long expedition for clarity at the close of deadline week for this issue. There is only so long I can stay in Los Angeles for before my energetic space is as polluted as the air. So, I write to you sitting on top of my suitcase in Les Parc des Buttes-Chemount. I have three hours to kill before I am able to settle into my sublet, so here I am taking a deep breath of clean air and listening to the sound of the fall leaves falling, the birds chatting, and the church bells chime from every direction (it’s Sunday). This park may be my heaven, and as I look around I can see I’m not the only one that feels this way. That is fine with me, it’s better shared. Even as I sit here in perfect bliss, clarity is still far from how I would describe my state of being. I get glimpses of it and I hope you will too as you get deep in this issue, but it’s still not here. That too is ok. If I already had clarity I may not

be sitting in my personal heaven writing this note to you. So, my dear reader, thank you. Thank you for always giving me a reason to dive into the deep end, it’s because of that that I am where I am at this very moment. And even after the 10 hour flight and no sleep, I am in perfect Bliss. Enjoy the issue. Here’s to the path to clarity. Je’taime

“Growing up I was surrounded by art. My mom was always
been an artist at heart; I grew up watching her make sculptures from scratch and going to her exhibits. She was involved in the art scene, and frequently brought me along to gallery openings as a child. Being exposed to many different types of art opened my eyes and cultivated my interest in beautiful and interesting objects, artifacts, paintings, and of course, photography. Her passion for traveling also shaped the way I look at the world. She has always encouraged me to travel and
photographers. Picking up a camera for a solo trip to Tibet was the
experience new things, and of course to always include exposure to art

The kind of music we play -- traditional jazz, hot jazz, dixieland -- seems to be reaching a wider audience. We can’t count the number of times someone has come up to us after a show with wild, crazy eyes and asked, “What do you call this music?” For a lot of people, they hear the word “jazz” and they think of either elevator music or freeform stuff .

ELisabeth:
I’m not sure it’s changed that much, though it’s perhaps become richer with music made a c o u s t i c a l ly. Best Memory from a gig together?
ELisabeth:
We headlined outdoors at Lincoln Center to a crowd of 6000 people, which was wonderful and overwhelming. And we were invited to play a concert at Louis A r m s t r o n g ’ s h o u s e , w h i c h i s a r e a l h o n o r. I w a s t e x t i n g e ve r y b o d y. “ I ’ m p e e i n g i n Louis’ bathroom! I’m warming up in Louis’ breakfast nook!” How did your parents/ childhoods influence your paths with this kind of music? And politics?

Both Evan’s folks and mine listened to a lot of music from the first half of the 20th c e n t u r y. A n d my g r a n d - d a d w a s a t r u m p e t p l ay e r, c o m p o s e r a n d b a n d l e a d e r d u r i n g that era. We didn’t g row up thinking of it as old-timey -- to us, it was just pop music.
