Dear Friends, The “gray tsunami,” that rapid growth of the aging population, is upon us. Fortunately, CJFS is prepared. In recent years, we have strategically focused on becoming experts at serving the generation that has given our community, and our world, so much for so long. CJFS provides support across the growing spectrum of needs for those over 60. We assist individuals and families in crisis, and we work with those who are proactively planning for the future. We focus on enhancing independence and enriching quality of life—addressing concerns ranging from health and wellness, to social and cognitive engagement, to safety and comfort. For example:
After losing her husband, Rachel fell into a depression more profound than normal grieving. When Henry broke his hip, his son had no idea how to ensure he could return safely home. When David was diagnosed with dementia, his wife knew she would need time for herself to be the best caregiver she could be. After Bella’s doctor told her it was unsafe to drive, she was determined not to burden her kids. When Ellen, active and healthy at 78, wanted to ensure she could stay in her home as long as possible, she needed help planning for the changes that could make that difficult.
In aging, as in life, everyone’s journey is unique. These people have different situations, challenges and goals. But they all found compassion, expertise and guidance at CJFS—regardless of their faith or financial situation. In 2016 CJFS grew and was strengthened, preparing us to meet the needs of our aging population, one unique family at a time! We expanded CARES and Counseling; operated the Buz-A-Bus and Personal Care programs at full capacity; and offered new Outreach programming such as CyberSeniors and Music & Memory. This growth would not have been possible without the vision of our Board of Directors; the success of our From the Heart Endowment Campaign; the energy and expertise of our staff— and you, our donors. More money means more mission. Your generosity gave us the capacity to grow, and as a result, we provided over 20,000 hours of direct service, touching more than 700 clients and their families. It is easy to see the concrete benefits of such services as transportation, respite care, ESL instruction, financial assistance, and in-home care. Less tangible, but equally worth noting, is the impact of the guidance, social connections and human kindness we provide.
