His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik as patron His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark

The Royal House of Denmark blows even further wind in the sails of KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup. His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark has accepted to become patron of Denmark’s most spectacular surf event, which, for the fourth time, takes place in Klitmøller, September 2013. HRH Crown Prince Frederik has already announced that he will be paying Klitmøller a visit during the World Cup week. This will not be HRH Crown Prince Frederik’s first windsurf related visit to Klitmøller. On the 23rd of August 2011 he inaugurated the newly constructed waterfront, and the new clubhouse “Hummerhuset”. Among others, “Hummerhuset” houses the local surf club NASA (North Atlantic Surf Association), and during the World Cup the clubhouse will be transformed into the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup headquarters.

Jump on board Welcome to KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup 2013. We would especially like to extend a warm welcome to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark. We are honored that he has accepted to become patron of our event. Welcome to our partners, sponsors, members, volunteers and audience. You are all part of making this a unique event. ”Friends of Cold Hawaii” is the newly founded association, which has been responsible for the organization of the annual Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup in Klitmøller since 2012. In December 2012, I became President of the association. Since then, I, along with the other board members, have been part of a team that works stubbornly, persistently and self-consciously to maintain, expand and develop the status which the World Cup has achieved. We have managed to make our part of the PWA tour a significant event, on a national as well as an international scale. Every week, Friends of Cold Hawaii are contacted by people from as far away as Australia and Japan, because they have become aware that something interesting and relevant is happening in a small North Sea town called Klitmøller. Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup is the leader of development among people who are enthusiastic about surfing on the west coast of Thy. We are riding on a wave, in more than just one sense. It is a wave of creativity, skilled labor, sustainable tourism, and above all, a strong image of a very unique position of strength in Denmark. Jump on board, and let us make this year’s World Cup in wave performance in Klitmøller an even better and more authentic experience than ever before. May the wind and the waves help us create a future-orientated development and energy in Cold Hawaii.

Finn Jorsal President of Friends of Cold Hawaii 3

Welcome to the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup! I find it difficult to express how happy and excited I am to welcome His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik as patron of the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup. As a wave surfer I can only say that it is like catching the wave of the day, and then riding it all the way to shore: It is almost impossible to stop smiling. It is also a great pleasure to welcome back spectators, sponsors and partners. Hopefully the weather gods will be on our side, and provide the best possible conditions, so that Cold Hawaii once again will show everybody what makes it such an amazing place. Once again, an energetic team of over 100 volunteers and a large group of enthusiastic companies have created an event, which has gained a reputation of being exciting, passionate and well organized. As surfers, we find that the best moments are the ones spent in close proximity to nature. That is also the case with Cold Hawaii, and with the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup, we want to help create an agenda, where the consideration of both people and nature is prioritized.

4

Because of this, we are once again focusing on sustainability. Like in the previous years, our title sponsor KIA is providing us with eco-friendly and economical cars, to be used during the event. Furthermore, we will build on last years’ experiences concerning biodegradable tableware and printed materials, and choose the most sustainable solutions on all levels. As in the previous years, we will be sorting the waste, and this time we have fine-tuned the system, making it even easier for the spectators, participants and ourselves to make an effort for the environment. I wish you all a pleasant stay and some amazing experiences here in Cold Hawaii.

Robert Sand Project manager, KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup

Welcome to the municipality of Thisted and Cold Hawaii This year I am particularly pleased to be able to welcome His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik to Thy, as patron of KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup. The municipality of Thisted has supported the World Cup from the very beginning. We had no doubt that this was an exceptional opportunity to create a unique event, which is based on our fantastic nature. Therefore, I am also proud that the world cup in Cold Hawaii has now become an event so big and strong, that it has managed to catch the attention of the Crown Prince. It is a great honour to welcome him to the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup. In a municipality where we cherish the community, it is also a great pleasure to witness the cooperation and volunteer commitment which makes this event possible. To me, this is one of many examples of how our local enthusiasts are able to create something original, based on the possibilities in our area. As Mayor of the municipality of Thisted, I am currently looking into finding new ways in which Cold Hawaii can be expanded, and influence a greater part of the tourism on the west coast of Thy.

In relation to this, I would like to mention that the municipality of Thisted, in cooperation with Visit Nordjylland, Thy Turistforening, and a group of local businesses, has started the project “Two towns, one wave”. The purpose of the project is to create a better connection between the towns Klitmøller and Vorupør, which are home to some of the best surf spots in Northern Europe. I would also like to mention that one of our local educational institutions, Thy-Mors HF & VUC (Thy-Mors college), is using Cold Hawaii as the basis of a brand new education. The idea is to take the same demands of flexibility and adaptability which the life as a surfer requires, and use these as a frame for the daily classes. Through specific daily challenges, the education will prepare the students for their future work life, where flexibility and adaptability are key elements in the pursuit of success. With these words, I wish you all great wind and the best of waves for this year’s World Cup in Cold Hawaii.

Lene Kjelgaard Jensen Mayor of the municipality of Thisted

Competition rules and points The judges can award the sailors from 1 to 12 points for the manoeuvres or wave-rides they perform during each heat. The sailors are judged in two categories: jumps and wave riding. Jumps are judged based on the level of difficulty, how well the jump is performed and how high it is. In the category of wave riding, the judgment is based on style and how big the wave is. A heat typically lasts for 8–10 minutes, followed by a two-minute break, after which the next heat begins. Depending on the conditions, the sailors will be scored on up to three jumps and three wave-rides in a heat. They compete by the “knockout system”, meaning that the person with the most points wins and moves on to the next heat, until there are only two people left in the final. The 32 sailors are placed in a “single elimination”, with two people on the water in each heat. The winner of the heat will advance and move on to the next heat. Look at the figure on your right. All sailors are seeded based on previous competitions. The seeding of the individual sailor determines who he will be competing against in the first heat. The single elimination can run for several days. When the single elimination ends, a winner is, technically, found. However, it is possible for all the sailors to get a second chance. This happens if the weather is right, making it possible to carry out a “double elimination”.

16

The results from the single elimination determine the seeding in the double elimination, so that the winner of the single elimination meets the last man left in the double elimination, if the weather allows it . At this point the winner of the single elimination is still undefeated, while the last man left in the double elimination has lost one heat - the one he lost during the single elimination. Everyone else has lost two heats – one in the single elimination and one in the double elimination. If the winner of the single elimination defeats the last man left in the double elimination, he will win the competition. Everybody else will have lost two heats, apart from the winner of the single elimination, who has won all of his heats. However, if the winner of the single elimination loses to the last man in the double elimination, the two of them will be tied, with two lost heats each. This will send them on to a “Super final”, where the winner of the heat will be the overall winner. The double elimination can, like the single elimination, run for several days. If the double elimination is impossible to finish, the result from the single elimination counts. That means that the winner of the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup is not found until the double elimination has been sailed, or the competition days are over.

1. Board: The boards are made of a hard block of foam with a shell of glass and carbon fibre. The sailors typically bring 2-5 boards in different sizes for the competitions. The windier it is, the smaller the board. A typical board is around 230cm long and weighs 6kg. 2. Sail: The sails are mainly made out of monofilm and nylon. In Klitmøller the sailors will be using sails of between 3.3m² and 5.7m². The windier it is, the smaller the sail they will use.

18

3. Mast: The masts are made of carbon fibre. They are approximately 370cm long and weigh around 1.5kg. 4. Boom: Like the mast, the boom is also made of carbon fibre. The boom is the “handle” of the sail, and can be adjusted to fit different sail sizes.

6

4

5. Wetsuit: The sailors wear wetsuits made of neoprene, which are very flexible and 3–5mm thick. The wetsuits protect them from the cold. 6. Harness: The harness is made of nylon and has a stainless steel hook. The windsurfers wear a harness around the hip in order to be able to hold on to the sail for longer periods of time. The harness can be attached to the boom, and thereby help relieve the windsurfers arms.

Get a close-up on the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup has committed itself to a vision of increasing the popularity of the sport.

live. A system like this has been on PWA’s wish list for the last 20 years.

The focal point is the live video streaming, combined with experienced and energetic commentators. As a part of the live stream, it will be possible to chat and ask questions directly, and sometimes the ‘stars’ will participate in the debate.

Through an innovation project made in collaboration with ACTIVE institute, in 2011 it became possible to produce and show all scores online. This boosted the development of a complete system, which had a successful premiere in the 2012 edition of the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World CUP. It will, of course, also be possible to follow the scores live in 2013.

We are continuously uploading images from our photographers on Flickr. Furthermore, there will be four mobile journalists (the ‘tweetamigos’) who are equipped with smartphones, which will allow them to text and send images and short video clips to provide behind-the-scenes coverage of the event. After each day’s competitions, a podcast will be made available containing highlights from the events of the day. These highlights will also be available via the event’s own YouTube channel. Last but not least, our mascot, Cold Hawaii Penguin will join in via his Facebook page, with lots of fun, competitions and great prizes. Live scoring In 2010 and 2011 the organization behind KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup and PWA cooperated on creating a system, which would make it possible to follow the judges’ scorings
