You have probably heard about the vocational options you can study at College, while you are still at school. This publication is designed to provide you with information on how we can help you decide what to do next. Why choose Colchester Institute? From year 10, you may be able to study for a qualification at Colchester Institute (including The College at Braintree and The College at Clacton). We offer a range of vocational courses in construction, motor vehicle maintenance, hairdressing and beauty therapy, and hospitality and catering. These courses are specifically devised to provide you, and other 14-16 year olds, with an opportunity to study for a career or skill and gain a qualification. Attending College gives more ďŹ&#x201A;exibility to your studies in school, improves your social learning and development, and helps you to make career choices after year 11. Our 14-16 programmes are delivered at: The College at Braintree, Church Lane The College at Clacton, Church Road Colchester Institute, Sheepen Road

All campuses are easily accessible by public transport and bicycle stands are provided at all sites. We work closely with around 30 schools and institutions in the Colchester, Braintree, Witham, Clacton and Tendring areas. Taster/selection sessions in each course are organised during the Spring Term for year 9 students who are considering a vocational qualification around the time of their option selection. The sessions give students the opportunity to meet tutors and spend a morning or afternoon at College finding out about the vocational area they are interested in. All uniform, equipment and books for each course will be provided by the College. Travel passes are provided for students who travel by public transport, to ensure they can access College easily (two day programmes only). Students who are in receipt of 'free school meals' are given lunch vouchers to use in the College refectories. Students will take part in educational visits and enrichment activities. These are usually in the local area and are beneficial to students, giving them more insight into industry and business. These activities help with team building and communication skills.

Courses at The College at Braintree The College at Braintree, Church Lane Campus Just a short walk from the town centre, The College at Braintree offers a friendly environment with specialist facilities in a range of areas, including its own onsite beauty therapy and hair salons open to the public, and fully equipped workshops where students can gain hands on experience in areas such as motor vehicle, motorcycle, carpentry and joinery, and electrical installations. Between classes there is a large refectory offering hot and cold food, snacks and drinks as well as a common room, library and computing facilities. There is also the 4,500m² Cooper Drive building (the second campus in Braintree) which has spacious workshops for painting and decorating, and bricklaying.

Construction BTEC Extended Certificate Level 1 Course Level: 1 Duration:

One day a week delivered over two years

Course Description This course has been designed to provide basic training in three construction trades - brickwork, carpentry and joinery, and painting and decorating. Carpentry and joinery is delivered at the Church Lane Campus, while brickwork and painting and decorating is delivered at Cooper Drive. The programme is assessed practically and students cover a variety of tasks to develop their skills in all these trades. This course is suited to students looking to pursue a career in construction and is an introduction to the skills and knowledge required in this industry. Students cover a variety of units spending 12 weeks in each area, training towards specific tests in some of the following areas: • Constructing a brick wall in English bond • Assembling a semicircled arch • Constructing a block wall • Constructing a cavity wall with recess • Constructing a single ﬂue chimney and pot • Constructing through mortice and tenon • Constructing a centre brindle joint • Constructing a halving dovetail joint • Painting a timber window frame • Working with hardwood finishes • Rust removal and priming metal

Course Progression

Basic Construction Skills Introduction to Hair and Beauty Sector Vehicle Maintenance

Successful candidates may progress on to the two year Diploma in Bricklaying, Carpentry and Joinery, or Painting and Decorating. Successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma in year one will allow the opportunity to progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in year two. Alternatively students may apply for Apprenticeship programmes. 3

One day a week delivered over two years

Course Description This course provides an introduction to the hair and beauty sector with hands on practical experience with products and techniques. The course is taught mainly in training salons where students work on each other or tuition heads to gain practical assessments. The qualification is made up of an assignment for each unit, research work and knowledge assessment, and an external examination. This course is an ideal base to prepare you for further learning or training in either beauty therapy or hairdressing. Mandatory units covered are: • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector • Presenting a professional image in a salon Optional units include: • Hand care • Nail art application • Skin care • Styling men’s/women’s hair • Basic make-up application • The art of dressing hair • Themed face painting

Course Progression After successful completion and recommendation from the department’s board of study, students may progress on to a Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing (1 GCSE grade A*-D in either English or maths and science is also required). 4

Course Level: Entry One day a week delivered over two years

Course Description This qualification is designed to engage and motivate 14-16 year olds who are interested in learning about the maintenance of motor vehicles and various roles that are available in the retail motor industry. This course is ideal for learners who wish to undertake a qualification and develop a basic understanding and skills which will provide a stepping stone to further qualifications in the motor trade. The course is assessed by a variety of practical tasks, oral questioning and an online examination. Students cover units from the following areas: • Health and safety practices in vehicle maintenance • Tools, equipment and materials for vehicle maintenance • Introduction to the retail automotive maintenance and repair industry • Principles of component fitting • Light vehicle construction

Course Progression Students may progress on to any of the level 1, one year mechanics courses. Successful completion will then lead on to a Level 2 Diploma in year two. Progression to an Apprenticeship programme is also an option.

Courses at The College at Clacton The College at Clacton, Church Road Campus The Clacton Campus is situated on Church Road, just a few minutes walk from the seafront, the town centre and the railway station. The campus offers a modern learning environment, which includes a Construction Craft Centre providing specialist facilities for plumbing, electrical installations, carpentry and joinery, and painting and decorating. It also has excellent hair and beauty salons which are open to the public, allowing students to gain valuable experience of working within a real salon setting. Students are able buy a range of snacks and meals at the campus café and there is a student common room with TV, pool table and table-football.

Construction BTEC Extended Certificate Level 1 Course Level: 1 Duration:

One day a week delivered over two years

Course Description This course has been designed to provide basic training in four construction trades - carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating, plumbing and electrical installations. The programme is assessed practically and students cover a variety of tasks to develop their skills in these trades. This course is suited to students who are interested in pursuing a career in construction and is an introduction to the skills and knowledge required in this industry. Students cover a variety of units spending 12 weeks in each area, training towards specific tests in some of the following areas: • Constructing a centre brindle joint • Constructing a halving dovetail joint • Painting a timber window frame • Working with hardwood finishes • Rust removal and priming metal • Identify the PPE and safe working practices to be used in plumbing and electrical work • Working from a drawing-producing a copper frame using compression and soldered fittings

Course Progression

Basic Construction Skills - Mixed Trades Introduction to Hair and Beauty Sector

Successful candidates may progress on to the two year Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery, Painting and Decorating, Electrical Installations or Plumbing. Successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma in year one will allow the opportunity to progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in year two. The entry requirements for plumbing and electrical courses are 2 GCSEs grades A*-C including maths and either English language or science and successful completion of an entrance test.

Courses at the Colchester Campus Colchester is the largest of the College campuses and offers a vibrant, bustling and modern learning environment situated a short walk from town and the main railway station. It houses specialist engineering and construction workshops allowing students to gain valuable experience in their chosen sector. The purpose-built Centre for Hospitality and Food Studies provides excellent facilities and training for hospitality students, and aims to give them a realistic sense of what it is like to work in the hospitality industry. The campus also has three refectories and a common room to relax in at break times.

Food and Beverage Service City & Guilds NVQ and Food Preparation and Cooking NVQ Certificate Course Level: 1 Duration:

Two days a week delivered over two years

Course Description This double qualification gives students the opportunity to gain a good basic understanding of hospitality work to succeed in a job or move on to further study. The Certificate in Food and Beverage Service will give you the confidence and knowledge to serve food and drink in restaurants, pubs and bars and develop excellent customer service skills. The Certificate in Food Preparation and Cooking will enable you to gain skills in the kitchen, from storing food hygienically to cooking simple dishes. Students cover mandatory and optional units from a wide variety of areas including: • Maintenance of a safe, hygienic and secure working environment • Working effectively as part of a hospitality team • Maintaining food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food • Maintaining food safety when storing, holding and serving food • Maintaining customer care • Preparing and clearing areas for table and tray service • Providing table and tray service • Preparing and cooking meat/poultry • Cooking and finishing simple bread and dough products • Preparing and finishing simple salad and fruit dishes

Course Progression

Step Up NOCN Foundation Learning 14-16 Course Level: 1 Duration:

One day a week delivered over two years

Course Description This programme for 14-16 year old vulnerable learners was introduced in September 2010 at the Colchester Campus. This course is for students who need to access a Foundation Learning programme and is delivered in partnership with Colchester schools, The Shaw Trust and Colchester Institute. Students can choose to study from a variety of National Open College Network vocational units in the following: • Hair and beauty • Motor vehicle • Catering • Construction • Health and care • Performing arts Functional Skills and personal and social development is delivered in school. The students bank units throughout the programme working towards achieving NOCN Level 1 Diploma in Skills Towards Enabling Progression (Step Up).

Course Progression The aim of the programme is to develop student confidence and build on vocational skills, encouraging them to discover their strengths and consider further vocational training post-16.

Successful students may progress on to one of the NVQ Level 2 programmes offered at Colchester Institute. 9

Motor Vehicle

Jake and Ryan

Connor

Jake and Ryan completed the 14-16 Vocational Pathway in Mixed Trades Construction in June 2013. They studied the course at the Braintree Campus and gained experience in three construction trades: brickwork, carpentry and joinery, and painting and decorating.

Connor is in the second year of the Motor Vehicle course at The College at Braintree. He enjoys being at College for the day, and has made lots of new friends. He likes being in the workshop and learning on the job.

Both Jake and Ryan are now full-time students at the Cooper Drive site studying painting and decorating. Both students said they chose to do the 14-16 course to give them the chance to gain skills in three different trades, so that they could then decide which area they would eventually like to work in. Both have gained work experience in painting and decorating whilst being at College and said they would definitely recommend this course to year 9 learners considering a career in the building industry. They said attending the 14-16 course showed them what further training opportunities were available to them after leaving school. Both Jake and Ryan aim to progress on to a level 3 course in painting and decorating in the future.

Connor has always wanted to own his own garage and is glad he had the opportunity to do this course. After completing year 11, he is hoping to come back to the College full-time, to study for the level 2 qualification.

Hair and Beauty Abbie and Rebecca Abbie and Rebecca are both year 11 learners in the second year of the 14-16 Vocational Pathway in Hair and Beauty at the Colchester Campus. The course covers units in hairdressing and beauty therapy and both girls have enjoyed the beauty side of the course so much that they have applied to return to Colchester Institute when they leave school to further their studies on a level 2 beauty therapy course. Rebecca said she has enjoyed the course as she has learnt different skills to those at school and has enjoyed learning in an adult environment. Abbie said all of her tutors are friendly and easy to talk to and she has enjoyed the massage and facial therapies the most. The girls both aspire to work in the beauty industry. Rebecca hopes to work as a therapist in a beauty spa and Abbie would like to train as an aromatherapist and reďŹ&#x201A;exologist.

Hospitality and Catering Amy Amy completed the 14-16 Vocational Pathway in Hospitality and Catering in June 2011. She is now in the second year of the Professional Chefs VRQ Level 2 course. Amy gained many vocational skills whilst on the 14-16 course and found coming to College alongside school helped her gain confidence and become more independent. The course also made her realise what she wanted to do as a career. Amy enjoyed meeting students from other schools and enjoyed being taught in an adult environment by experienced chef tutors. Whilst on the programme Amy received Best Student Award which was presented at the annual 14-16 Vocational Pathway Awards Evening. Amy hopes to now progress on to the level 3 one year Professional Chefs course and eventually reach her goal of becoming a pastry chef.
