BA (Hons) in Technical Theatre A practical course which introduces students to a wide range of backstage crafts and career options through working with a extensive array of performances from dance to classical music, and musical theatre to rock bands.

The course is designed for students who have a strong commitment to technical theatre as an art and craft, and wish to pursue their passion through to employment within the creative industries where there is a strong demand for technically trained graduates.

Course description

The course is physically and mentally demanding and requires learners who are disciplined and committed.

Course content

The first year provides a broad introduction to the areas of technical theatre including lighting, sound, stage management and scenic construction. These will be studied within the context of the nature of theatre and the role of technicians and stage managers within theatrical performance. Throughout the year, students will support and assist with the public performances mounted within the Faculty of Creative Arts. There are a range of performances including; dance, musical theatre, acting and music.

Modules include: Year one

The second year builds on these foundations by developing skills in lighting and sound design and introduces new skills in computer aided design and scenic design. Students will work in production capacities across a range of events including concerts, plays and musicals. They will work within the education, arts centre and theatre fields including placements with local arts organisations as well as supporting in-house College productions. In the third year, students will manage the production process from original concept through to the ‘get out’ for an in-house production, as well as experiment with the use of multimedia technology in theatre and screen performance. The year will also include a placement in a professional theatre, designed to consolidate all the knowledge gained throughout the course. The culmination of the year is the Specialist Technical Theatre Practice module where students will have to opportunity to work on a large scale project in a chosen

What our graduates do Students from BA (Hons) move into the industry in many different job roles. Some stay with theatre and others move towards music entertainment. Recent graduates have found positions in educational institutions as technicians, full-time work as technicians in theatre and also working freelance as multi-skilled technicians and designers across the technical theatre spectrum.
