2015 - Issue #5 - Winter

COGnitions Random thoughts and ramblings from your Area Director It’s a bit gloomy that the first day of winter is days away. On the positive side, the northeast had fairly good weather this year and this fall has been noticeably dryer and warmer than recent past years. Let’s hope for a quick, mild winter. I’ve missed out on riding opportunities the past few weekends due to a troublesome battery with sudden death syndrome and my procrastination to replace it. Between family obligations, work, and school studies it’s easy to justify in my mind not having enough free time to ride. One blockage to free time is clearing up as I am only days away from completing graduate studies – fingers crossed. This winter I have some planned maintenance and repairs to do on the bike to be ready for spring. I am already planning on attending the Spring Tech Day in Monson at the end of April and Spring Fling in May. The announcement hit the COG web forum and will be in the forthcoming Concourier… The COG elections have concluded. I was informed that I was the only nominee for Northeast Area Director, and therefore “win” the election for the 2016-2017 term. It’s my honor to continue to serve NE members. The other night I was reflecting on my 14 year tenure as area director, and realized this period of my life had some significant personal ups and downs. I experienced the loss of my brother and both parents; two job changes; my daughter’s marriage; the birth of two grandchildren; and the struggles of being an adult learner in graduate school. Is it odd that I find the work I do for COG to be a therapeutic diversion? I really do enjoy managing the day to day business of the Northeast Area, as well as hosting and assisting others to host activities. COG feels like an extended family and when we get together at activities it feels like a cousin’s club homecoming. I would have not been able to manage to remain in this position if it were not for the support from the members. I am grateful to have had a terrific NE staff. You guys and gals made it easy for me to do my job, and together we bring a great club experience to all members. Thanks one and all. I’m looking forward to two more great years. The Fall Rally was held in Lake George the first weekend in October. It was a successful event that drew 58 attendees (Group picture on page 2). Thanks to Terry and Scott for pulling off another great adventure. They must be fairly connected “upstairs” as we really dodged a significant weather bullet. Those that bailed out due to doom and gloom weather reports really missed out. Kevin Remsen summed it up nicely, “What a fantastic 4 days! After all the worry about weather it was damn near perfect. I think it's safe to say that the big man upstairs is a rider! We went from a complete washout and possible hurricane to 4 days with ZERO rain. It was a little chilly in the mornings but nothing a little hot chocolate through the sinus cavities won't take care of! Terry and Scott did a great job. Everything went off without a hitch…”

We had a great time at the New York International Motorcycle Show, and the fun COG gathering in the mid-afternoon. Terry describes what was going to happen in his article and there are some photos later in this issue. (Continued on page 5)

Well Coggers, here we are at the end of another year! And I’m at the end of my reign as the Editor. I do want to say a big Thanks to all of you that have diligently provided columns, pictures, ride reports and all the other input that you have submitted over the last 3 years. It’s your input that makes the Newsletter worthwhile. In particular, thanks to Terry for being the first one to submit his column, for every issue over 3 years! And to Greg and Tracey for always having well written columns and reports that require zero editing! And to Russell for sponsoring/mentoring so

many events and getting something submitted about them, either from him or another participant. I’ll still be a COG member and hope to continue to get to some events. The Editor position is still open, so I sincerely hope that another member can step up and take this on—Steve already has plenty to do as the AD! I’ll be happy to pass on all my info and any guidance to the next steward of this position. It’s a fun way to stay in the loop on all the activities & events and keep in touch with the AADs and members who submit ride reports. If interested, please contact me or Steve Smith for more info. - Happy Riding to all of you!

News from your Assistant Area Directors (complete list of AADs on back page) NY/NJ Metro Area Terry Faherty #792 Well folks the season is officially wrapping up. Thanksgiving has passed us by and the turkey leftovers are running out. It's two weeks to the show as I write this and our annual Javitz show get together. We're trying out a new venue to boot. This year we'll be opting for Reichenbach Hall, a German style beer hall a bit further east from our old haunt. Seems its closed till January (thanks Guy!). Hope to see a good turnout. On the home front my steed is in pieces at the moment while I await with bated breath the return of my rebuilt fork and custom shock from Race Tech. I'll have loads of fun tinkering with the settings maybe even try to actually set the sag myself....maybe! I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Just think of all those farkles that Santa (or Hanukah Harry!) is going to be bringing! See you at spring thaw and next stop is the Fling!

MA, ME, NH, VTGreg & Tracey Habel #7010/7010A Although winter is quickly arriving, I’m looking forward to doing some more maintenance. Those original 1999 cooling hoses are going to be replaced and I can take a closer look at a potential cross-over exhaust leak (I hope to get some light in there along with my IPhone to look for holes). My Odyssey AGM battery I think is going on 5+ years and may be due for replacement as well. Overall my C10 is holding up well at 52k miles (I know – send in for the 50k sticker!). Tracey’s 2012 Can Am Spyder has been flawless and changing the oil was easier than imagined after watching some Youtube videos a couple

of years ago. The amount of trunk space is really nice on trips and comes in very handy with groceries since it is deep. Tracey and I had a blast at the Fall Rally in Lake George along with COG-dom. It’s hard not to like the roads and scenery in that area. The surrounding mountains over the lake are just beautiful to look at. I keep reminding myself that one day Tracey and I will spend another week there to further explore and re-explore. I was particularly enamored to see a C10 like mine but with Heli bars and an adjustable windscreen. The bars may finally be an answer to my shoulder issues, while the windscreen could fix my buffeting (I think I am built oddly!). We had a nice group of people at our end-of-year social in November to which we tossed around some ideas for 2016, the fun we had in 2015, and spoke of continued friendships. Some of those ideas included: Picnic & Ride, Fall Foliage Ride, Whitehorse Gear, Cape Ann, Ride & Raft, potential for a fall rally in Bar Harbor area, and an instructional movie. If anyone wishes to help lead or plan any of these events, please contact us soon so we can get them on the calendar. We will be starting the season with our Season Kick-off Social to be held at the Horseshoe Pub in Hudson, MA on Saturday January 23rd at high Noon. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to host something, please email us at COG7010@verizon.net. Please be sure to register on-line on the N.E. events calendar at www.cog-online.org, if you plan to attend an event. This will help us to make reservations for lunch and plan accordingly to keep the ride group size at a safe number. Until next time, please cherish everyone you meet, and those you haven’t yet. Life is too short. Greg and Tracey

Maryland Russell Fleming #599 2015 was a good riding season here in Maryland and South Central PA. At this time I am working on the 2016 rides and meet and greets. If you have a new ride that you would like to host please let me know and we will work out the details. March 20, 2016 we are going to do the Crab Cake Ride as a one day event with two start locations and an end at Woody's Crab Cake House in North East MD. I have been asked by some people about the North South Ride in June if I was still holding the event since Martha passed away and the answer is YES and the dates are June 3 to 5. So make your plans now. Chuck Landis and Steve Ritter are in the planning stages or putting together the Forget Your Taxes Ride for April 9. I will be hosting the two Kawasaki C14 Rides, one on May 1 and the other on October 9. Check the COG ride calendar for more information on these rides. I will be stepping down in April as the AAD for this area, I feel it is time for some new member to step up and try some new things. The real reason I am stepping down is how my life has changed in the last 4 year and it is now time for me to go and enjoy life and not worry about anyone else.

VA/WV Tim Steele #8904 The annual Burr Ride took place the second weekend in November. Turnout was good with approximately 25 riders and others that showed up in convertibles. The weather cooperated and the riding was great. Pictures were scarce as everyone seemed to want to get in that last few miles before the season ended. The Swinging Bridge was packed with Coggers and The Pink Cadillac got its share as well. We did have two minor incidents that I think did more damage to the bikes than the people.

Sunday, several made it to Weasie’s in Waynesboro for some breakfast before the ride home.

The 2016 schedule will be hitting the Calendar very soon. We are planning on having Meet & Greets every month this year, including January. If the weather holds, we might be able to ride to it. From VA/WV, I hope you all have a great Holiday Season and I look forward to riding with and seeing many of you next year.

ON (Eastern) Richard Beaudoin #9318 Well folks it's been one of the best years for biking in a long time due to this mild fall. For me it's time to put together a budget for next years season. I find every once and a while things can get a little tight if I don't plan for what I'll need in parts and fuel. Then there's the rallies. We can't always do them all but budgeting for one keeps your options open for choice. I'm looking at scheduling more rides next season and hopefully an over night event. So any suggestions would be welcome. Would you like to ride to eat some where? Rally from a hotel for a couple days? Know a great eatery? Do you have a cool photo of a bike event? Send me your input! COG is a great group of people and the more the merrier. I'd like to thank the people who had events this year. Two events I was lucky to make and enjoy. Last of all, our holiday season is fast approaching and Val and I want to wish all of you a safe and happy holiday season. Keep wishing of an early spring. Rich

Event Reports (continued from page 4)

Simon’s Fall Colours Run Simon Haworth, #11652 Cobourg, Ontario — On Sunday October 25th, Simon Haworth hosted the 2nd Annual Fall Colours Ride, this time with a longer, more varied and more challenging route than the previous year.

stopped for lunch at the Port Hope harbour, the temperature was well into the double digits and it was time to open any available jacket venting. An excellent lunch, featuring many locally-sourced ingredients, was enjoyed by all at Crawford’s Lakeview Cafe, at the foot of Mill Street in historic Port Hope. Due to work and family commitments, three riders took their leave after the lunch stop, while the remainder enjoyed a warm ride through the farmland north of Port Hope, and a twisting meander along the dirt and gravel fireroad in the Ganaraska Forest. All in all, a great day’s riding on a wide variety of urban and rural roads, with new and interesting scenery at every turn.

Nine riders, including four C10s, four C14s and an FJR1300, assembled in Cobourg at 9 AM on a dreary, damp and cloudy Sunday morning. The ride — divided into a morning section of 170 kms, and a post-lunch leg of 75 kms — took in a sweeping expanse of Northumberland County, known for its variety of terrain, urban and rural architecture, and wide variance in road surfaces. Quickly into the ride, the weather slowly began to clear, and when the group made an 11 AM coffee stop in the charming village of Warkworth, riders noticed a dramatic increase in air temperature, and the paved roads now all completely dry. Conditions continued to improve for the remainder of the morning ride, so that when the group

Until next time. Ride safe,

Many thanks to all who attended the event. Next year’s ride will also be a full-day affair, all within Northumberland County, but will take place in early October.

COGnitions Looking ahead, there are several Northeast Area activities to look forward to this winter and spring:

   

MA, NH, VT, ME Season Kick-off Social, Jan 23, 12:00 PM The BIG Chill Meet & Greet, Jan 24, 1:00 PM Hampstead, MD Meet & Greet Lunch, Feb 21, 1:00PM Spring Fling Rally, May 19-22, Williamsport, PA (see web to register & book rooms)

The COG Southeast Area is busy working on the 2016 National Rally, which will be the week of June 20-24 in Helen, GA. The hotel and registration details have not been announced yet. Watch for details online and in The Concourier. Here is a quick membership status... Since August 1 we gained 25 new members bringing the total Northeast

2015 - Issue #5– Winter

Area membership to 582 members and 157 associates. My disappointment came when I saw that there were 51 expired members in the same period. The online membership system COG uses sends email renewal notifications prior to expiration. Club emails can come from the “cogonline.org” or “concours.org” web domains. Please ensure that you have set up your email to not block these or send them to junk folder.

Activity Participant Ettiquette At our rides, rallies and other activities COG members look out for each other. If someone has an incident we’ve had other riders stay with them and help inform family. When a rider goes missing during a ride or does not show back up at a meet point or back to rally central there is concern and worry. We may go search, call family, or report the missing rider to the police. As Jerry Gowen would say, “no man left behind.” Do not be this person and allow the activity host to enjoy their weekend without worry. If you choose to leave an activity please be sure someone knows and that the activity host is notified. Thank you for your participation and consideration

COG Northeast Seeking New AADs and Newsletter Editor COG Northeast is seeking Assistant Area Directors (AAD) specifically for Connecticut, Rhode Island, PA Western, PA North Central, Delaware, and NY Western. I will also consider AADs for other regions when a volunteer steps up and makes a proposal. AADs can be appointed as needed for a state, region, city/town, or just about anything that works. There can be one, or two or more for any region. What is needed is the desire and motivation to want to help COG be better and to host a few activities each year and help other members host too. Do you have some good ideas for improving this newsletter? Here is your chance! The newsletter editor position is open and I am looking for an active member to pick up the throttle and take it for a spin over the next great set of roads. It’s a fun way to stay in the loop on all the activities & events and keep in touch with the AADs and members. If you would like to lead this ride for a while, please contact me for more info. There are plenty of resources to help you get up to speed. - Steve Smith

Reminder: Keep Taking (and Sharing) those Photographs! In a recent discussion about the Northeast-specific online web pages, I mentioned that there seemed to be fewer pictures taken and shared during this year’s events. It was suggested that a short reminder might be in order. So here it is (there are only three steps) …

8

1.

Remember to take your camera—Try to remember to take your camera with you whenever you go on a ride or event. Many people use their phone as their camera. If that’s you, you probably have your camera anyway.

2.

Take a picture— … or two or three. You don’t have to be the photojournalist taking hundreds of pictures every time the wheels stop turning, but one or two won’t hurt. As is often found on many forums “Pictures or it didn’t happen!”

3.

Share them—Include them in a post in the forum thread about the event you’ve attended. Don’t be afraid to start a new thread in the unlikely event that one was not already going prior. If you already use a photo hosting site, use the direct link from the individual photo or the photo album in your message. Alternatively, you can use the “Media” portion of the forum (see the top banner on the forum web page) to upload your photos.
