COGnitions Random thoughts and ramblings from your Area Director It’s officially fall. This is a great time of year to ride. The humidity is gone and the air is cool and crisp. Pretty soon the foliage will begin to explode in full color. Experience it in full force during the NE Fall Foliage Rally in Lake George, NY the weekend of October 1-4. The rally falls right in the middle of foliage season and hopefully the timing will be great. Visit the club web site for details if you make a last minute decision to attend. It’s not too early to begin thinking about and planning 2016 activities. You make the decision on what you want to do. No ideas? No problem! Sometimes all it takes is picking a date, time and nice location to host a lunch time meet and greet. It really is easy, although the most difficult part is taking the first step. Contact me or your local AAD and we will assist you with planning and promoting your idea. I think the first event being planned for 2016 is the Spring Fling Rally. Rallymeister Jason Kaplitz has found and will be trying out a new location in Williamsport, PA. The tentative dates are May 19-22. Details are being finalized and complete details should be in the next newsletter and posted on the web site before the end of the year. The rally hotel is downtown within walking distance to many food and beverage establishments. It takes minutes to be out of town and into great riding. Take a ride to see the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, the elk viewing area, grab a sammich at Wolfe’s General store in Slate Run, or ride to Hyner View. Election Time - Northeast Area Director Complete information should be in the next Concourier. Here’s a summary. The Area Director position is a 2‑year term with the current term ending December 31, 2015 and the next term beginning on January 1, 2016. The first step in the elections process is the nomination period. Any Northeast member may nominate another NE member including themselves, but both the nominee and person making the nomination must be a COG member in good standing (dues up to date). The nomination period begins October 10, 2015. Email your nominations in to Joanne Poole, COG Secretary. (secretary@cog-online.org) All nominations must be received on or before October 31, 2015 or it will not be considered valid. Your nomination must include 1) The name (and COG number) of the person you are nominating; and 2) Your name, address, and COG number. If there is only one nominee, that person will become the Area Director. If there are two or more nominees who have accepted the nomination, there must be a vote by the members to elect the Area Director. A notification will be sent to the members if a vote is required. The voting period will be November 1-11 2015. All votes must be received by the club Secretary on or before November 11, 2015 or it will not be considered valid.

Tim Anderson #9470 The Ride Calendar is getting a bit bare as we wind down the season but there are still some good times to be had in the crisp weather this time of year… just keep that heated gear handy! Do you have some good ideas for improving this newsletter? Things you would like to see done differently? Here is your chance… After three years as editor, I’m looking to hand off the editor role at the end of this year to

another willing COG volunteer. My predecessor set me up well with an existing format and process that works well, and I’ll be happy to pass on all my info and guidance to the next steward of this position. It’s a fun way to stay in the loop on all the activities & events and keep in touch with the AADs and members who submit ride reports. I’ve had an increase in other obligations that have limited the time I’ve had for the newsletter, so it is time to pass the torch. If interested, please contact me or Steve Smith for more info.

News from your Assistant Area Directors (complete list of AADs on back page) NY/NJ Metro Area Terry Faherty #792 Greetings folks! Hope you all had a great summer season. I should really quit whining but it was a rough one for me. Lot's of family commitments took precedence over riding. I'm hoping to try to rectify that now that the season is changing. We're heading towards fall and the cooler temperatures which make for great riding. The Fall Rally in Lake George is right around the corner, let's hope the weather cooperates with dry days. It's always a good time at the Motel Montreal! As I write this we have 43 (ed. now 60) folks signed up so it's not too big, not too small, it's just right! Before you know it the Javitz Show will be here and if you plan on attending on Saturday we'll be gathering again for some COG comradeship in the afternoon. Details will follow on the forum and the calendar. See you out there everyone!

MA, ME, NH, VTGreg & Tracey Habel #7010/7010A It’s hard to believe that Labor Day has already come and gone. Where did the Summer Go? We have had some great events in our area lately thanks to Kevin Martin. Kevin hosted an overnight trip up to Northern VT staying in Derby the weekend of July 25th. The weekend started with everyone meeting up at Cliff’s Restaurant in Townsend, MA and heading North toward Derby via some of Vermont’s best scenic roads. Greg was supposed to join the group but had to back out at the last minute due to a recent tailbone injury. Along on the trip was Bob Petit, Dave Fazzuoli, Ed Dyer, Gary Petit, Gary Ruppert, and Wayne & Maryann Geiser. Saturday August 15th Greg & I held a

Meet & Greet at the Cork ‘N Keg Grill in Raymond, NH (formerly Famous Legends Sports Bar). We enjoyed a nice lunch with Lyle Cooper, Kevin Martin, & Mark Williams and Greg led us on a nice 80 mile loop up through Pittsfield and then through the Bear Brook State Park. We were doing a pretty good job at outrunning the rain until almost the end of the ride. About 10 minutes shy of the Ice Cream stop we pulled over to don our raingear since the gentle mist was starting to get a little heavier. Just as we started off again the mist turned to sprinkle and then to a more steady rain. Phew! Good call on stopping for rain gear Greg! As we pulled into the Brick House Drive-in for our Ice Cream the skies let loose and we had front a row seat to watch the torrential rains while enjoying our treats. We hung out in a lovely little screened porch they had at the ice cream shop and waited out the rain. Within a half an hour the rain subsided and we went on our way to enjoy the last leg of our adventure. Next up was Kevin Martin’s weekend getaway to Acadia National Park. Greg & I had just been there in June for the first time and we had such a wonderful time that Greg decided to join them and go again!! See his article on Page 5! We are both looking forward to the upcoming shenanigans and riding coming up at the Fall Rally being held in Lake George, NY hosted by Terry & Scott Thursday, October 1st thru Sunday, October 4th. It looks like there is good sized group already signed up, but there is always room for more. If you haven’t signed up yet there is still time to join in on the fun. See you there!! We will be rounding out the season

with our End of Season Social to be held at the Horseshoe Pub in Hudson, MA on Saturday, November 7th at high Noon. Bring your wish-lists and ideas to the social and help us to build a calendar of events that everyone can enjoy during the 2016 riding season. Murph’s gift certificates will be raffled! If anyone has any suggestions or would like to host something, please email us at COG7010@verizon.net. Please be sure to register on-line at on the NE events calendar at www.cog-online.org , if you plan to attend an event. This will help us plan accordingly to keep the ride group size at a safe number.

ON (Greater Toronto Area) Dave Perkins #5932 It has been a great summer here in the Greater Toronto Area and southern Ontario. The weather has largely co-operated with less of the stinking heat we normally get. Turnout at our two monthly meetings has been excellent with riders coming out on their way home from work or joining later after a meal with their families. We did manage a group ride in early August. This was not a COG event but a charity ride in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Assn of Canada. There are about 10 of these rides throughout the year across Canada and are run under the banner “Ride For The Breath Of Life”. This was held for the first time in Durham Region which is about 40 miles east of Toronto. In fact most of the members in the COG GTA East group come from Durham and points east. The ride was in memory of Marika Wallenburg, niece of Anton Wallen-

an 11th participant. Peter’s wife Deb followed behind in her Ford Escape. She came ready for emergencies with tools to strip the bikes and shovels to hide the bodies.

burg, a COG GTA East member. Marika succumbed to CF about a year ago. Anton and I met with CF Canada staff in the late spring for the basic info needed to get the ride rolling. They were most helpful and directed us to the organizers of other rides for hints on organizing and shaking down folks for donations.

In total we raised over $1700 for CF Canada, Anton raising over half of that amount. In addition to his vested interest it seems he knows ways to hold people by their ankles and shake the coins from their pockets. Well done Anton! We learned a lot from the experience and we’ll do better next year though for this year I will conclude with the fact that COG and COGgers care!

(continued from page 3)

Peter Jackson, also from Durham region, put a route together for us. The out-bound leg started at a truck stop near Bowmanville, then through the hinterland along the shore of Lake Ontario and then north through the beautiful farm country of south-central Ontario, ending in Hastings which is on the Trent-Severn Canal. The Trent, as it is known, is a chain of rivers and lakes connecting Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. It is about 385 km/240 miles overall with 45 locks. It is very popular with power boats of all sizes. Hastings is about 80 kms/50 miles from the Lake Ontario entrance at Trenton. This was the planned lunch stop at the Banjo Grill and the lunch was excellent. Barbecue is a specialty and though you don’t think south-central Ontario when you think barbecue the two are not mutually exclusive! Good food, well prepared and well served. The homeward leg took us back south but along the south shore of Rice Lake (part of the Trent) through more of the same beautiful, gently rolling countryside and back to civilization. The total loop was about 220 kms /135 miles. Not a technically challenging ride due to the nature of the geography but it was an excellent way to spend a day in a part of the province that is worth a visit. Traffic was light and the weather was a bit overcast and on the cool side. Ideal in other words. We had 10 riders sign up, eight from the GTA East group and two, including myself, from the larger GTA group which meets west of Toronto. May not sound like a lot of riders but from little seeds grow mighty rides. We also had

4

I extend my thanks to Anton and Peter for their hard work in pulling this together in such a short time. And to Deb for her very important role; blessedly the tools and shovels were not required! A few of us are planning on attending the fall rally in Lake George. It is about 600 kms / 400 miles from the GTA, an easy day ride. Hope to see you there!!

Maryland Russell Fleming #599 There has been some good riding in MD and South Central PA at the end of July. There was the long distance lunch ride out to Harshbarger's SUB ‘N MALT in McVeytown, PA which drew 30 riders and Wade Chilcoat did a great ride report which will be in the next Concourier. In August there were two rides, the Sport Touring Camaraderie Ride in Carlisle, PA and the Wild Hog BBQ Ride. There was a small turnout for both rides and no one stepped up to do a ride report. October 11 is the Kawasaki C14 ride out of Union Bride, MD— check the event calendar for more details.

VA/WV Tim Steele #8904 Dog Days on August, 6th – 9th turned out to be a great weekend of riding. We had 30 bikes in the parking lot and a few were riding double, so great crowd. The town of Staunton offered up a good time for anyone that wanted to enjoy themselves. Jazz in the park went on Thursday night despite the threat of rain, Shakin’ at the Station cancelled due to the chance of rain, but the parking lot of the hotel was full of about 21 people who came in for the weekend. Friday turned out to be wet all day, still many got out for rides and I think the ADV guys actually enjoyed the mud. Saturday was beautiful and groups went in different directions. The area provides many great opportunities for a day of enjoyment. Saturday evening the Blues event in downtown went on as planned. It was enjoyable and pretty crowded. Looking ahead, we have a meet & greet on the 9th in Richmond. Location has had to be changed. The Quaker Steak& Lube has closed down. New location, Mission BBQ at 5540 Glenside Dr. Jason had such a good time, he’s putting together a non-COG event in Staunton again Oct 2-4. This interferes with the Fall Rally in NY, but offers those of us who are quickly running out of vacation time a chance to attend a weekend ride closer to home. October has a camp and ride get together at Pat Sprague’s on the 16th – 18th. Check the calendar for other options as well. There is lots going on. Hope to see you at a ride! Ride Safe!

We are starting to work on the 2016 event calendar for this area. Jack and Deb will do the BIG Chili, I will do a Sunday Lunch Ride some time and Chuck Landing and Steve Rutter are working on a Forget Your Taxes Ride. I’m looking for someone to step and help with some rides because I am thinking about retiring next spring and hopping on the motorcycle and taking a 4 to 5 month ride. So if you want rides in this area please step and help!

Ride Reports Acadia National Park Weekend Sept 18-20, 2015 By Greg Habel (MA/ME/NH/VT CoAAD) #7010 Something for everyone!

(continued from page 4)

ON (Eastern) Richard Beaudoin #9318 Hello from Ontario; It has been quiet here this year in organizing rides. Work and supporting rallys along with meeting up with people for rides has been filling in lots of time. I didn’t think it was going to be a high mileage season the way things started out this year. Jason and Steve’s spring rally was a good kick off to the season. Then in July I had the pleasure of meeting up with Kevin Remsen near Montreal. Kevin was up from New York State on Holiday and had time for a day ride with me up around Mont Tremblant Quebec. That’s the second time I’ve been able to ride with Kevin. The last time was up Mount Washington last fall. Both times great company. A few days later I get a text from Steve Morris. Are you still off work? Would you like to go on an overnighter? Well that led to a day run to White Horse gear in Conway, NH. A little shopping, good food, company and great roads made a fun trip. Here’s a shot from the Kancamagus Highway.

and 311 as well at the Dragons Back 16. It wouldn’t have been complete without some Blue Ridge Parkway. Here are a couple shots from the GoPro on the BPR.

A misty morning in the lowlands

The Bluff Mountain Tunnel So a not so promising riding season for me has turned out to be an awesome one and with Scott and Terry’s fall rally still to come. I’m blessed with good riding friends and an understanding wife. Yes I’ll get to that to do list shortly. Only one more tire to go.

Guy Raymond, Steve and I had a great ride North of Kingston, Ontario this summer crossing the Rideau Canal several times while working our way up to Barry’s Bay Ontario on close to a 500 mile day. The shot at the tip of the next column is on Chaffey’s Lock road. My last excursion was with Guy to Roanoke, Virginia in Early September riding the area for three days. Highway 33

Send me your ride events so they can be posted on the calendar of events. It takes all of us to make Ontario East a strong part of the North East area.

Tracey and I traveled to Acadia National Park back in June but I enjoyed it so much that I signed up to attend COG member Kevin Martin’s weekend Sept 18 – 20. Most of us met up Friday morning with the group at the Cracker Barrel in Tewksbury, MA around 8:00 am. Kevin entertained us with a funny story about how his day started with an unexpected delay while suiting up. As someone who has had trouble with many a zipper, I could imagine the frustration that Kevin encountered when his pant leg got caught in the lower zipper thus requiring tools to free himself. Fortunately there were not any franks or beans involved like in the movie “Something About Mary”. At the Cracker Barrel we had 8 bikes consisting of COG members Wayne & Maryann Geiser, Bob & Moe Petit, Greg Habel, Kevin Martin, Paul Medeiros, Joe Callahan, and Joe’s brother Jamie. Tom O’Neil joined us at one of the rest stops. Since Acadia/Bar Harbor is a bit of a haul and in the interest of saving time we followed Rtes. 495, 95, 295, then onto lesser traveled roads of 201/202, 3, 1, and 3 into Acadia. Lunch was at a lovely ma/pa place called “The Olde Mill Diner” in Searsmont, ME; thus beginning the tradition of eating way too much for me while on holiday (a word tribute to my fellow Canadians). Although I didn’t have room for their home-made pies, they looked delicious as I drooled while other people happily consumed them. The weather going up turned out to be warmer than expected and a very long traffic jam due to a bad accident on Rte. 3 a few miles from the bridge to Acadia, left me wishing I had packed my mesh gear. Oh by the way, wicking shirts work great except when laden with a cotton shirt on top (note to self). As we got further away from the major highways, the scenery just kept getting better and better. The sight of

Cadillac Mountain on the island was breathtaking from a distance as it lured us closer. Dinner Friday evening was in a scenic restaurant right on the harbor of Bar Harbor called “The Fish House”. With boats in the distance, a gentle breeze, the sound of Pink Floyd’s “Animals” in the background, tourists taking it all in, clear open night skies and great conversation, the night couldn’t have been any better. After dinner and in need of rest from our long journey we checked into the Kimball Terrace Inn, overlooking the Northeast Harbor. Saturday morning I awoke to a misty view of the harbor from the room I was sharing with Paul. Located on top of a

hill, Kimball Terrace Inn was built near the original grand hotel built in the 1800s and razed in the late 1960s. In the lobby, many old pictures show how things used to be back in the heyday, including other sites around town. As I have gotten older I have become more and more fascinated with the past and it was a treat to imagine what it was like there back in the day. Meeting in the restaurant next door we made plans for the day’s riding. I chose to grab a croissant and OJ just up the street at The Colonels while others went for the continental breakfast at the Inn. About 2 months ago I injured my tailbone so I decided to go solo and take it easy using Kevin’s pre-planned Acadia Winter Harbor route of ~120 miles. That area is something Tracey and I had wanted to do but ran out of time back in June. Kevin, Tom, Bob, Moe, Joe, and Jamie decided on a nice long

6

route up near the Canadian border and from what I heard they hit a bit of fog but enjoyed great roads and food. Wayne and Maryann headed out to visit the area of FDR’s pre-presidential summer home on Campobello Island in New Brunswick’s Bay of Fundy along with other riding delights. My ride to Winter Harbor area was captivating with the fog right along the water’s edge but it didn’t stop sightseers from taking it all in. The roads did not disappoint as did the lack of traffic. On one particular section there was this roller-coaster of a road that begged to crack the throttle time and time again. “When suddenly” I noticed a small sign that read “Corea – Wharf Gallery Lunch 11-2”. This intrigued me. A gallery with lunch; hmmm… As I rode on for another 10 miles I felt compelled to turn around and check it out. This meant I had to travel the roller-coaster road again – yippeeeee! Finding this gem for lunch was a real treat for me, as it was nestled in a tiny harbor town called “Corea”. With all picnic bench outdoor seating overlooking the harbor, a small attached gallery and lobsters abound, I was drawn to their lobster roll (oh so good!) as I took in the quaint scenery. Zipping back to the hotel (and over the roller-coaster section again) I found time back in the room to rest out on the deck while waiting for the others to return. Joe and Jamie returned with a desire to hit Cadillac Mountain before sunset. Maryann, Wayne, and I decided to bring food back to the hotel while bonding over beverages and recalling our adventures of the day; oh so good – thank you Maryann and Wayne. Paul and Tom joined us after dinner for additional amusing evening conversation.

The rest of the group decided on various different dinner options that I heard were just as enjoyable.

Wild Blueberry Land! On Sunday morning we said our goodbyes, talked about future plans like the NE Fall Rally in Lake George before heading out. Some folks decided to do more local riding in the park, while others like me headed straight home. I would like to thank Kevin Martin for hosting the event, leading rides, and keeping us laughing. Kevin, you still do so much to keep this area active; Tracey and I really appreciate it. Seeing Joe and Jamie again was a real treat for me since it gave me more time to get to know them; nice people! Given the abundance of history, roads, scenery, shops, activities, and great food; Acadia really has something for everyone.

COG Northeast Seeking New AADs Presently COG Northeast is seeking Assistant Area Directors (AAD) specifically for Connecticut, Rhode Island, and a coAAD to help Russell in Maryland. I will also consider AADs for other regions when a volunteer steps up and makes a proposal. AADs can be appointed as needed for a state, region, city/town, or just about anything that works. There can be one, or two or more for any region. What is needed is the desire and motivation to want to help COG be better and to host a few activities each year and help other members host too.

Reminder: Keep Taking (and Sharing) those Photographs! In a recent discussion about the Northeast-specific online web pages, I mentioned that there seemed to be fewer pictures taken and shared during this year’s events. It was suggested that a short reminder might be in order. So here it is (there are only three steps) …

8

1.

Remember to take your camera—Try to remember to take your camera with you whenever you go on a ride or event. Many people use their phone as their camera. If that’s you, you probably have your camera anyway.

2.

Take a picture— … or two or three. You don’t have to be the photojournalist taking hundreds of pictures every time the wheels stop turning, but one or two won’t hurt. As is often found on many forums “Pictures or it didn’t happen!”

3.

Share them—Include them in a post in the forum thread about the event you’ve attended. Don’t be afraid to start a new thread in the unlikely event that one was not already going prior. If you already use a photo hosting site, use the direct link from the individual photo or the photo album in your message. Alternatively, you can use the “Media” portion of the forum (see the top banner on the forum web page) to upload your photos.
