2015 - Issue #2 - Spring!

COGnitions Random thoughts and ramblings from your Area Director If you’re like me, then your first ride of the season was delayed by the unusually long winter weather. My wish is that by the time you are reading this you have been able to get in a few rides. Please be careful out there and consider these safety tips. It is going to take more time for road crews to complete their spring work. The harsh winter created plenty of potholes, some large enough to seriously damage a motorcycle tire. A friend hit one the other day that damaged the rear rim and tire on his FJR. Roadways may not have been swept of sand. The most dangerous places for riders is corners and intersections. Be careful out there. The Northeast Calendar of Event is filling out nicely. Thanks to all the members (and staff) who volunteer to host an activity. Any member can host and promote a COG activity, and we will always find a place in the schedule to add it. You make the decision on what you want to do. Want to do something, but have no idea? Sometimes all it takes is picking a new location to host a lunch time meet and greet. As you will read later in this issue Chuck Landis says, “If Tracy and I can pull off a successful COG event, anyone can. Give it a try.” I think we all feel the same thing after hosting our first event. The most difficult part is taking the first step. Contact me or your local AAD and we will assist you with planning and promoting your idea. The online Northeast calendar at www.cog-online.org is the master schedule for our activities and is kept as up to date as possible. If you see something of interest in the newsletter, go online to confirm details. The online calendar is also the place to register for activities. When the online service we use was updated some parts of the registration process changed and may look different. One important thing to do is log into your COG account before registering for an event. If you don’t log in first the event system assumes you are a guest registration, prompts re-entering your info, and if it is a fee based event you will be charged guest pricing. If you need help registering for an event, please call me. Northeast Spring Fling Rally is May 14-17. Early bird pricing has ended, but you can still register at the low standard fee of $30/member (guest fees are higher). On last check there were 55 attendees registered. The numbers are beginning to increase now that the nice weather has arrived. Good thing, because Jason wants to feel the love and have a large crowd. There is more info about the rally later in this issue, along with registration details.

I’m sad to report Brain & Andrea Felice decided to step down as AAD and not renew membership, so the CT/RI area needs an AAD or just some folks to host meet n greets. Contact me if you can help. Check the staff listing on page 10 for open AAD spots, although the actual locations are not cast in stone. Contact me for more info. Until next time. Ride safe.

Tim Anderson #9470 As expected, everyone is talking about finally getting out in the sun after a long winter! There are a few great ride reports in this issue even though it is early in the year, and I hope you all of you have gotten out to a few good rides so far. The Ride & Event Schedule starting on page 7 has lots of opportunities! I was fortunate to have some early riding fun even though the snow was still piled high in CT. My wife had a con-

ference in Santa Barbara in early March, and I tagged along and rented a bike for a day of riding in the mountains on a beautiful sunny day. Just what the doctor ordered!

Concours Owners Group NORTHEAST AREA NEWS

Around the NORTHEAST

News from your Assistant Area Directors (complete list of AADs on back page) NY/NJ Metro Area Terry Faherty #792 Greetings fellow COGgers! It's March 31st as I write this and it feels more like March 1st here in NYC. Fear not though, Spring has to arrive eventually (right?!?). By the time you read this the Long Island Tech Day will have come and gone. I'm planning to attend and lend a pair of hands to anyone who needs it. Let's hope the weather will cooperate and we'll have a nice turnout. I did some work on my own beastie over the previous weekend and let's just say things were less than smooth. On the bright side I didn't burn my house down after a minor gas spill but I did strip three of six bolts on my brake disc trying to remove it requiring a trip to my local dealer for rescue. Now my new EBC Wave rotors are installed and ready to go. Just need to replace the brake fluid and do an oil change and she'll be good for the start of the season! We're still waiting for Lake George to wake up from it's winter nap to finalize the dates for the Fall Rally but still shooting for the last weekend of September or first one of October. Hopefully we'll get it nailed down well before Americade and get the info flowing. As usual keep an eye to the calendar and forum for any late breaking rides and if you have any ideas for a ride or gathering don't hesitate to let me know and I'll help get it organized. If you will be attending Americade check the forum for a possible day ride. I'll be there all week. See you on the road...oh and did I mention...I HATE SNOW!!!! ;-P

2015 - Issue #2 – Spring!

MA, ME, NH, VTGreg & Tracey Habel # 7010/7010A OMG – Spring is really here! The other day on a drizzly Friday afternoon in the 50s I couldn’t stand looking at the bike I left dirty before garaging over the winter, so I decided to hook up the hot water to the hose and give Christabelle (my bike’s name) her overdue wash in the garage. After running my hands all over her I naturally got excited. Whoa! For riding that is. The following day Tracey and I rode out to my folks house on my bike to get her Can Am Spyder “Boris” out of storage. What a glorious ride back home with fresh air, sun, and that loving feeling to be riding again! On Saturday March 28th we held our first lunch Meet ‘n Greet at Lowell’s Restaurant in Mendon, MA. We had a nice turnout on a lingering snowy day with friends from MA and RI. We talked about the upcoming rides, events, and just general catching up on life’s many moments. It was great to see familiar faces and laugh together. On Saturday April 11th Kevin Martin held his first group ride “Spring Merrimack Valley Ride” attended by 6 people who enjoyed a beautiful sunny day, not much traffic, lunch at Joey's 50's Diner in Amherst, NH, and then a nice ride back via scenic Rte. 31. Saturday April 25th we will be hosting our annual NE Tech Session & Gear/Part Swap at the home of Pat & Sher Mulloy in Monson, MA. If you want to do work on your bike to get ready for the season and have any questions regarding work or tools needed, please send your questions to us at: Pat Mulloy at: sniper64@aol.com or Greg Habel at: cog7010@verizon.net for assistance. If you are looking to do a tire change at Tech Day please contact Pat regarding having your new tires shipped directly to his house. We ask that folks make sure to register for this event and note in your comment the work you would like to do so that we can make sure that we have enough garage space for everyone. We will have the usual coffee & muffins in the morning and lunch with water/soft drinks will be served in the afternoon. Whether you are doing work, just coming by to help out a fellow COGger or just to hang out, we ask that everyone register for this event as space and

parking are limited. A big thank you goes out to Kevin Martin for several great rides and overnighters that he will be hosting this year for our area starting in April. If enough people sign up for the overnighters, Kevin will try to secure a group hotel rate. You can find them all on the NE calendar. We may also be adding a few more items to the calendar as there are a few things still in the planning stages, so check the calendar periodically for any updates. Tracey and I are planning on doing a Sunday thru Thursday trip up to Acadia National Park in Maine June 13 thru 18; not yet posted. Our plan is to camp in the campground and use cheap motels as a backup should the weather turn to flooding. You are more than welcome to join us for a day, dinner, or as long as you like. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to host something, please email us at COG7010@verizon.net. Please be sure to register on-line at on the NE events calendar at www.cog-online.org if you plan to attend an event. This will help us to make reservations for lunch and plan accordingly to keep the ride group size at a safe number. See you soon, Greg and Tracey ON (Greater Toronto Area) Dave Perkins #5932 It has been a long, cold winter here in southern Ontario but, rodent-based predictions notwithstanding, spring is finally here (though I probably cursed that statement by decommissioning my snow blower this morning!) And with that the bikes are coming out and riders are hitting the road to blow off the stink of winter including our own local group: At our most recent monthly meeting last Tuesday 11 of 14 folks in attendance arrived on their scoots on a beautiful evening in the mid 50s F. We are planning another Tech Session this spring but no definite time and place has been nailed down. Peter Jackson will be (re)scheduling his ill-fated ride of last autumn, probably in the May/June time frame. On May 30 there is a Ride-For-Lupus out of Guelph, Ontario, about 60 miles west of Toronto. All of the events will be posted on the NE calendar as soon as possible.

Not to be too obvious but as a caution to all for your first rides, watch out for the salt and sand on the roads, slippery as ball bearings at any time and slimy in the wet. For the C10 owners when performing your spring checks and maintenance and while the tank and Tupperware are off take time to tighten every fastener you see. Loose ones are a significant contributor to “Connie buzz”. I and a few others from the GTA will be attending the Spring Fling in Bedford, PA in mid-May. We look forward to meeting our American brothers and sisters. Until then, ride safe. Dave

the ride. For me it was a different type of ride being flat lands and along the Chesapeake Bay. Our 1st stop was at Saint Clements Island Museum where the 1st landing of Governor Leonard Calvert and the MD Colonists occurred on March 25th, 1634.

Hopefully next year we can have another great Crab Cake Ride.

Our next stop was on Cobb Island where we saw a pair of Osprey rebuilding their nest so that they could lay their eggs and start the next generation.

It's been a long, cold, wet and snowy winter down here in MD and South Central PA. Finally the weather broke for the Crab Cake Ride on March 20th. On Friday March 19th I had 4 inches of snow that I had to shovel off my driveway so that on Saturday my buddy Greg Puterbaugh and I could leave my house at 6:30 AM to head to California, MD to have breakfast at Lenny's. We were the first to arrive after a 140 mile ride. A few minutes later our host Simon Richardson arrived and we headed in to the restaurant for breakfast. There were 7 COG members and 5 friends of COG showed up for the ride.

Please check the COG ride & event schedule for more details on the April 26 Sport Touring Camaraderie Ride at WINCHESTER, VA, the May 3 KAWASAKI C14 RIDERS and Friend Ride and in June 19-21 the 2015 NORTH & SOUTH 18 GET TOGETHER which is the same week as the COG National so if you are like me you couldn't go to the National you have a weekend to get together. Till the next newsletter we hope everyone can get out and ride. Russell W Fleming

Our next stop was at Dennis Point Marina and campground where some brave campers setup their tents for the night. We saw two Bald Eagles in a fight over the territory.

After a belly filling breakfast we broke up into small groups and headed off on

At 5:15 we all got back on our motorcycles to head out to Ruddy Duck Inn for a good seafood dinner and talk about the ride and where we were going to be riding this year. A BIG Thank You to Simon Richardson for leading a GREAT ride and making the arrangements for good food.

Ride Report VA/WV by Tim Steele, #8904 It appears that the weather is turning and we can start getting out on a regular basis. Lots of planning has taken place over the past month, but riding has been sporadic at best. We had a get together for lunch March 7th in Charlottesville at Michie’s Tavern. Nine people showed up and enjoyed some great fried chicken and a few tales. This month we had breakfast get together in Gordonsville, April 12th. There is a track day set up for April 18th and we look forward to learning more about how to handle our bikes safely. The price is right! Then on April 25th, there is a lunch get together at Mr. B’s BBQ in Berryville. Preparing for Spring Fling, right now four or five of us are leaving the Harrisonburg area around noon on Thursday May 14th if anyone would like to join us. I promise we will NOT take the most direct route. Should be a fun ride, but getting there and back is half the fun. We are going to add an event to the calendar for this get ride, so that we don’t miss anyone interested in joining us. We have a ride planned on July 10 – 12 for a cross border excursion into the SE Area. We will be at the New River Campground, right on the NC/VA state line. Address is 3745 New River Parkway, Independence, VA 24348. The campground is fairly small, especially if you are interested in sleeping in a cabin, so getting your spot early is a good idea. The area is blessed with great roads in every direction, hope you can join us.

Forget Your Taxes Ride April 11, 2015 By Charles Landis, #10486 This was our first time hosting a COG event. My wife Tracy and I provided lunch for eleven riders at our home. We got lucky by picking a beautiful blue sky, breezy April day with temperatures in the upper 50s. Kickstands went up at 12:30 and we took a 120 mile route through York, Lebanon and Lancaster counties in south central PA. Stopping at Fort Indian Town Gap. Watching strykers roll by and helicopters landing was a great back drop for a little parking lot camaraderie (see picture on page 9). Things I learned today were, we always make to much food. This is the best club to belong to, bar none. If your going to lead a group, know your route. We had to make a few U-turns that I was embarrassed about. Coggers are a very forgiving bunch— I didn't take too much ribbing for my mistakes. I want to thank Russell Fleming, our AAD, for helping us get the event on the calendar and the forum. Russell gave away $25 gift certificate from Murph's Kits won by Rick Close (Bearbait). Thank you Steve Rutter for putting my poor Google maps into GPS routes. We already have plans for next years FGYT ride. May host a ride later this summer to take the Millersburg ferry across the Susquehanna River. If Tracy and I can pull off a successful COG event, anyone can. Give it a try. The little bit of time it takes to throw it together is well worth the new friends you will make.

Special Events Spring Fling 2015 May 14—16, 2015 Our annual Spring Fling is back after a one year hiatus and is returning to Bedford, PA. Those that attended the last event in Bedford had a great time and a combination of good location and reasonable cost finds us returning to the Travelodge in Bedford. All necessary information is located on the COG Calendar of Events. Room rate is $70.00 and includes a full breakfast buffet, and COG registration is priced low as well. Mail in registration form is provided on page 6. Central Pennsylvania offers great riding in all directions, with Western Maryland, Northern Virginia and West Virginia a short ride away. Downtown Bedford offers all the charm you’d expect with many shops and restaurants to enjoy. There will be a Meet-n-Greet Friday evening and banquet Saturday night. We will be playing Bug Splat on Saturday. Purchase a dot target for $5.00 or 3 for $10.00. We’ll clean your headlight and place the dots on it before you go for your day ride. Upon returning Bug Splats will be measured and winners determined based on who got a bull’s eye or at least the closest! The winner will get half of the proceeds, the other half will be going to the local Volunteer Fire Department or EMS. Sign up is SAT 8:30am-9:30am. Check-in and measure 3:30pm-4:30pm. Winner announced at the banquet. See you all in Bedford! Rally Meister, Jason Kaplitz, COG #32

Looking forward to seeing everyone this season. Lots of rides to offer in our area, check the Calendar. Ride Safe!

Reminder: Keep Taking (and Sharing) those Photographs! In a recent discussion about the Northeast-specific online web pages, I mentioned that there seemed to be fewer pictures taken and shared during this year’s events. It was suggested that a short reminder might be in order. So here it is (there are only three steps) …

10

1.

Remember to take your camera—Try to remember to take your camera with you whenever you go on a ride or event. Many people use their phone as their camera. If that’s you, you probably have your camera anyway.

2.

Take a picture— … or two or three. You don’t have to be the photojournalist taking hundreds of pictures every time the wheels stop turning, but one or two won’t hurt. As is often found on many forums “Pictures or it didn’t happen!”

3.

Share them—Include them in a post in the forum thread about the event you’ve attended. Don’t be afraid to start a new thread in the unlikely event that one was not already going prior. If you already use a photo hosting site, use the direct link from the individual photo or the photo album in your message. Alternatively, you can use the “Media” portion of the forum (see the top banner on the forum web page) to upload your photos.
