sun 1st \\ Dave Perry trio

Cool and contemporary jazz outfit with Dave’s nimble saxophone exploring some of his original material and ably supported by Joe Allen’s excellent double bass and the redoubtable drumming of Paul Wigens.

mon 2nD \\ CAnteen JAzz session

An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

tue 3rD \\ leo JAmes

As much a guitarist as a singer/songwriter, leo James’ original material draws on english and us folk roots, his tunes enhanced with impeccable finger-picking and swooping steel guitar.

WeD 4th \\ busnoys

martin Pyne’s fascinating vibraphone-led trio opens up his own tunes into clever and spacious pieces, thanks to like-minded contributions from Jeff spencer (bass) and trevor Davies (drums). it’s jazz, Jim, but not what you might expect, more the soundtrack of a musical journey that’s following its own directions.

thu 5th \\ JAmes morton

James morton plays sax - but you knew that, didn’t you? one of the best young players to come out of the region he’s a fine funkateer, a joyful jazzer and super-soulful when he chooses to be. there’ll be grooving aplenty for this one.

fri 6th \\ ten PounD suit bAnD

they call it swingabilly, a sizzling hot blend of jazz and blues with rockabilly style with no-holds-barred vocals. As well as originals and classic blues numbers they put the formula to the test with all kinds of unlikely cover versions that really work.

sAt 7th \\ K PAssA

25 years of relentless gigging has boiled down K Passa’s fiery folk rock to the combined essence of Cajun, Celtic roots simmered with punk attitude and a dub sensibility. nothings been lost, however, least of all the live energy that’s always made them a must see outfit.

sun 8th \\ eyebroW

supercool ambient jazz project with Pete Judge’s multi-looping trumpet and Paul Wigens’ groove-rooted drumming tightly woven into spacious soundscapes and explorations.

mon 9th \\ lADy nADe & the silhouettes

Coolly soulful, warmly jazzy - lady nade’s rich velvet vocals are all of the above and some, and the chirpy swing of her regular quartet the silhouettes puts the icing on that lovely cake. CAnteen live musiC listings \\ July 2012

tue 10th \\ iAn Perry

there’s a classic britishness about ian Perry’s folk-blues voice, rolling back to the early John martin and the founding sounds of the uK contemporary folk scene. he’s not just a pretty voice, however, and also writes songs thoughtfully and plays guitar with style and accomplishment.

WeD 11th \\ the mAtt Woosey bAnD matt’s solo efforts are a big enough experience, thanks to his full-throated hollering’ blues vocals and stonking rawedged guitar playing. so you can only imagine quite what happens when he turns up in this regular three-piece.

thu 12th \\ Phil King

great singer, masterful songwriter, talented guitarist and allround compelling performer of original soul-jazz acoustica. What’s the downside? We give up - there isn’t one.

fri 13th \\ los merCenArios

let’s talk heavyweight funk with jazz attitude. or dub. or latin, likewise? this well-established outfit delivers the lot with all the credibility you could wish for.

sAt 14th \\ bAPs

We think it stands for bristol Afrobeat Project … er … something. We know they from bristol - all ten of ‘em - and we known they play the kind of pile-driving West African funk that fela Kuti and his drumming l;emend tony Allen pioneered in the 70s. We know they’re pretty good at it, too. maybe it stands for sensation?

sun 15th \\ bAbAJACK

this is as smooth and accomplished as the blues should ever get, with becky tate’s vocals hitting the spot effortlessly and trev steger’s cigar box both looking and sounding like a sepia photo blowing across a disused railroad track. Add bass, violin and another guitar and there’s all the ingredients you’ll need to get down and boogie.

mon 16th \\ CAnteen JAzz session

An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

tue 17th \\ eDu egito

he’s big on the mestizo scene in barcelona but there’s no doubting singer/songwriter eduardo ‘edu’ egito’s brazilian roots - that rio cool will always shine through.

WeD 18th \\ vooDoo

grooving electronic funk with a noticeable hint of jazz from this powerful new trio of Andy nowak (keyboards), richie blake (bass) and Danny Cox (drums) united in a mission to resurrect forgotten classic from the likes of Jill scott, D’Angelo, stevie Wonder and others.

thu 19th \\ 4-sided triangle

this groovy quartet plays plenty of funk-fuelled tunes with a load of jazz panache courtesy of Kevin Figes (sax), Mike Outram (guitar), dan Moore (keys) and daisy Palmer (drums). their eponymous debut Cd is a stormer of hard-hitting numbers steeped in the rich flavours of New Orleans, new York and detroit.

Fri 20th \\ COunt BOBO & the BulliOn

You’ll recognise the members of this 6-piece bunch from other fave outfits and you’ll love their choice of vintage ska and rocksteady numbers from the likes of Prince Buster, the skatallites, rolande alphonso and others and all rendered with proper harmony vocals and rooting tooting saxophones.

sat 21st \\ MediCine CreeK

Medicine Creek is a stomping celebration of that old time Americana stuff, featuring the flailing fiddle of Aaron Catlow and dorian sutton’s rock-solid bass (both from sheelanagig) and the excellent nuala nonan on guitar and vocals. it’s as yee-hah as it should be, which is very (of course).

sun 22nd \\ velvet Chestnuts

this bunch of erstwhile Balkaneers and Klezmerites share a motley background in theatre and circus. With a line-up including accordion, fiddle and sousaphone maybe their big top influences won’t be so hard to spot.

MOn 23rd \\ viOlentangO

One of Buenos Aires’ hippest outfits, Violentango seize on every opportunity to add rock energy and style to the already passion-packed music of the tango. their music sizzles like a pampas barbecue with stinging acoustic guitars and swooning bandoneon driven by relentless percussion.

tue 24th \\ Mal WeBB

Mal Webb is a phenomenon, one of those ‘how do they do that?’ solo performers who makes great music on all kinds of instruments, throws in some beatboxing and sings on top of the results. and he’s come all the way from australia to show us what he can do, too.

Wed 25th \\ jiM BlOMField triO

ace threesome highlighting the amazing jazz piano and tunesmithery of Jim Blomfield, one of the sharpest musical minds in the jazz scene for many a mile.

thu 26th \\ dan MOOre triO

the keyboard maestro from Phantom limb teams up with former drummer Matt jones and valere speranza’s bass to make a not-so-traditional piano trio playing an unlikelysounding repertoire of Beck, Cole Porter, aC/dC and others using elements of gospel, country and minimalism.

Fri 27th \\ ManKala

With a strong grounding in upbeat african dance rhythms from soukous to afrobeat, the Mankala Band’s refreshed line-up always catch that rolling instrumental good-time sound and run with it - jazzy guitars and brass lifting above the urgent percussion to make proper tropical party music.

sat 28th \\ POPPY Perezz

that’s Poppy as in froth-on-a-daydream hip-hop-happy music, rather than red flowers. There’s more chirp in a Poppy Perezz number than your average aviary, thanks to the fusion of ideas from trinidad, Mexico and the uK that this Bristol-based foursome can claim as their roots, and they’re definitely on a mission to make you smile.

sun 29th \\ BlaCK light OrChestra led by the mysterious Mr diagonal, this lot claim to be Belgium’s premier pocket surrealist pop ensemble and promise to deliver ‘after-dinner rock’n’roll’. it’s an odd sound they make, five musicians in search of the same party from different directions, think Bonzo dog with a Belgian accent.

MOn 30th \\ Canteen jazz sessiOn

an open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

tue 31st \\ Kit haWes

Young Carnyvillian and sheelanagig-goer Kit hawes is a phenomenal guitarist with folk, jazz and contemporary music at his fingertips and his fine sense of what’s properly musical make his solo acoustic performances riveting.

Canteen r e C i P e B OX \ \ sPinaCh and gOats Cheese tart Make or if you like buy some shortcrust pastry, line a fluted tart case with the pastry and bake it blind in the oven at 180c. WHO’S HERE Stokes Croft has come a long way in the past decade; from somewhat grimy beginnings, the neighbourhood has continually undergone various transformations, becoming a colourful and energetic hub thanks to the efforts of the local community and some very hard working individuals.

Chairman of the committee behind the enterprise said, “After the campaign against Tesco, we realised we couldn’t just sit around and wait for something to happen we wanted to offer an alternative to all the larger stores, where shopping can be so impersonal.”

The latest addition to this vibrant area is The Stokes Croft Market. Born from the ‘No Tesco’ campaign in 2011, this volunteer run market falls on the second Saturday of every month and currently spans three main venues: Boston Tea Party hosts a selection of all things vintage while The Full Moon provides stalls catering to food, arts and crafts. Hamilton House also has a collection of arts and crafts stalls with additional delicious fare from the Community Kitchen stall outside.

As well as providing quality produce for the locals, the market is also set to create a platform for the area’s artistic delegates to showcase their talents. Stokes Croft is famous for its impressive and usually politically charged street art, so with the introduction of the Stokes Croft Market, the creativity of talented local artists can spill out onto the street from the scores of art studios in the neighbourhood.

The committee behind the market are working with Bristol City Council in order to eventually expand the current framework and encourage sprawling street-side stalls offering an even wider selection of goods, turning Stokes Croft into a trendy shopping destination for both locals and tourists alike.

The next Stokes Croft Market will be held on Saturday 14th July and runs from 11am – 6pm, so come along and support your local independent traders. For those still raring to go later on in the evening, the Attic Bar will be regularly hosting a fundraising event for the market on the same night, with fantastic music from all around the South West.

One of the main aims of the Stokes Croft Market If you are interested in hiring a stall and being a was to introduce a greater selection of affordable part of this new movement, contact: fresh food into the area and with it, the philosophy of responsible buying.
