Vacation Vibes If you’re like many of us, this summer may be the first time you’ve been able to take an actual vacation — perhaps one that’s been delayed and long-awaited. Especially after the past two years, we cherish the time spent with friends and family, and have learned to savor the little things. This edition of SELECT serves up the simple pleasures of the season, inspiration on where to go next, and — just as important — where to stay. Hotels represent a highlight of most trips, and choosing the right one can make all the difference in your experience. You can’t go wrong when you work with your travel advisor, who has the expertise and connections to secure upgrades, perks, and amenities you couldn’t get on your own. Please enjoy this issue and make sure to reach out to your travel advisor for help planning your next trip, big or small.

Summer is not just the season of warmth, light, and outdoor living. This is the season of vacation in all its varieties: family reunions, bucket-list biggies, road trips, destination weddings, and more. To kick off the season, we salute 20 reasons to love it, and where to find the best of summer around the world.

1

MAKE A SPLASH

Half the reason you check into a resort in summer is to check out the pool. Try the one with a lazy river (Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort and Spa in California). Or chill in the adult pool ringed in private cabanas (Four Seasons Resort Hualalai in Hawaii). Or the one at your own private villa (Joali Being in the Maldives). Places where lifeguards never blow the whistle, attendants pass popsicles, and swim-up bars dispense frozen treats. Your advisor can plan the perfect pool day.

2

LISTEN UP

Nothing beats hearing your favorite musicians al fresco. One venue to build a trip around: Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre near Denver, the 9,545-seat auditorium built between monolithic sandstone formations for perfect natural acoustics. This summer’s bill ranges from retro Chicago and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, bluesy Tedeschi Trucks Band, country’s The Chicks, and rapper Pitbull.

3 Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre

4

TAKE YOUR LICKS

Who are we kidding? Ice cream rules in any season. But the cool confection meets its seasonal complement in summer. Guests at The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna can sample free homemade scoops — our pick is the local strawberry — in the lobby all summer.

SHOOT THE MOON

Stay up late and count the stars this summer, or even the supermoons, when the moon is closest to the Earth in its orbit and appears larger than normal. There are two this summer: June 14, and July 13. The latter might dim the annual Perseid meteor shower, which can shoot up to 100 fireballs an hour across the sky — strongest on the night of August 12. But don’t wait for a special event. Have your advisor arrange a sunset viewing atop Mt. Haleakala on Maui, Hawaii, followed by stargazing to see the Milky Way in Haleakala National Park.

WHERE TO PARK IT

Feel the grass between your toes at the new Presidio Tunnel Tops in San Francisco. Opening mid-July, the 14-acre park, designed by the team behind The High Line park in New York City, sits atop the Presidio Parkway tunnels, capping the thoroughfare in lawns, gardens, and playgrounds, all in view of Golden Gate Bridge. In Manhattan, explore an 80,000-square-foot rooftop park — the city’s largest — recently opened on Pier 57 at Hudson River Park. And the new Sojourner Truth State Park in Kingston, New York, will open hiking trails on 520 acres — including a section of the 750-mile Empire State Trail — overlooking the Hudson River.

6 05

Iron Gwazi Coaster at Busch Gardens Tampa

SEE THE LIGHT

Summer is the only time to see synchronous fireflies light up the woods of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which straddles Tennessee and North Carolina. This rare species is found in only a few places and is one of 19 species of firefly in the park. During mating season, usually in early summer, synchronous lightning bugs flash five to eight times every few seconds in a micro-strobe display.

7

TAKE A THRILL RIDE

Our picks for this year’s new class of coasters: Iron Gwazi, a hybrid steel-and-wood successor at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay in Florida, boasts a 206-foot drop reaching top speeds of 76 miles per hour. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind the first Marvel-themed attraction at Walt Disney World in Orlando (Epcot, to be specific), takes place entirely indoors with projections, lighting, music, and animation, as the ride rotates 360 degrees. Emperor at SeaWorld San Diego suspends riders atop a 153-foot hill, before a 14-story drop at a 45-degree angle.

8

IN A PICKLE

Anyone can play pickleball. This fast-growing sport is a hybrid of tennis, paddleball, and ping pong. It’s showing up at resorts, from the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix with 12 lighted courts, to the spa Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, Mexico, offering guest instructors in July.

9

WORTH THE WAIT

When an event only takes place once every 10 years? Carpe summer. Holland’s Floriade Expo 2022, just outside Amsterdam, celebrates all things horticultural, from agriculture to vertical gardens, now to October 9. Originally to ward off the plague, the once-a-decade live Passion Play has been performed in the German town of Oberammergau since 1634. The 2020 version was delayed to this summer through October 2. Catch a performance during a 10-day Viking River Munich-to-Budapest cruise.

PEAK EARLY

The new Sky Glider mountain gondola at Icy Strait Point, Alaska – a popular stop on Inside Passage cruises – gets you to the summit of Sky Peak in a matter of scenic minutes. This home of hiking trails offers stunning views to Glacier Bay National Park. And the system saves the emissions of 72 shuttle buses.

Central Park has great variety, but The High Line has arguably more imagination per square foot; it is a public park built on a historic freight rail line — elevated on a nearly 1.5-mile-long line on the West Side of Manhattan. The High Line offers graciously landscaped strolls that thread the built environment past showy glass condos and vaulting original cobblestone streets. At the end of The High Line, in the Meatpacking District, The Whitney Museum of American Art was forced to delay the prestigious Whitney Biennial in 2020, due to the pandemic. Now, in 2022, the nation’s most esteemed survey of contemporary art is back in its 80th edition, with 63 artists and collectives organized under the theme “Quiet as It’s Kept,” exploring the American experience in what the curators call “precarious and improvised times.”

The mirrored infinity room, Air, offers trippy, reflected views of the surrounding city and landmarks, including the nearby Empire State Building.

Make your way across the Thames to the new Borough Yards, a shopping and dining district that revives the area’s original medieval street pattern, blending contemporary and traditional architecture. Pull up a stool at the marble bar of Barrafina Borough Yards to watch the chefs prepare your tapas.

Have your travel advisor reserve a table at the trendy Sessions Arts Club, located in the former judge’s dining room of a Clerkenwell courthouse. Despite its history, there’s nothing starched about its new incarnation, a clubby, art-filled and artfully crumbling – for effect – interior with soaring ceilings; a dramatic set for chef Florence Knight’s seasonal dishes. Described as “decadent and sexy” this club is part artists’ commune, part chic hotel.

The Victoria & Albert Museum is stuffed with the kinds of collections you’d imagine in the most curious of attics — wallpaper, hats, manuscripts, ceramics — a permanent collection of 2.27 million objects covering 5,000 years of human creativity. Among Britain’s most beloved contributions, “Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature” explores the much loved author’s illustrations as a scientist, farmer, and creator of characters including Peter Rabbit, plus more than 200 personal objects including coded diaries, letters, and landscape sketches.

While the West End offers tantalizing productions aplenty (including an acclaimed revival of Cabaret), put your advisor in charge of tracking down tickets to the immersive show experience, The Burnt City in outlying Woolwich. Punchdrunk theatre company is known for its deconstructed approach — in its breakthrough version of Macbeth called Sleep No More, audiences wandered among rooms at will to see different scenes. The Burnt City, its latest offering, focuses on the fall of Troy, with performances lasting up to three hours, and six entry times per day (through December). Toast your day with a sundowner at Lyaness, a hotspot from mixologist Ryan Chetiyawardana, known as Mr. Lyan, which opened just pre-pandemic and is already on the World’s 50 Best Bars list. Five seasonally rotating ingredients — perhaps grass with malt or oyster honey — star in original cocktails. The birthplace of Starbucks in the ‘70s, Seattle is a coffee-lover’s mecca, not just for the original craft roaster, but for all the micro-roasters that followed in its wake. In Belltown, stop into Fulcrum Café, where fifth-generation Costa Rican coffee farmer Blas Alfaro supplies nuanced beans and baristas make original lattes (think: toasted black sesame, brown sugar, and oat milk). Take in the expressionist abstractions of the human form in Alberto Giacometti: Toward the Ultimate Figure, a special exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum (July 14 to October 9). Focusing on the Swiss sculptor’s postwar major achievements from 1945 to his death in 1966, the collection brings together 60 works including sculptures, paintings, drawings, and figurative masterpieces in his elongated, textured style.

Head to Pike Place Market, Seattle’s landmark greenmarket and food hall, to ogle the giant Dungeness crab, massive salmon, and colorful flower stalls. You can pick up all kinds of souvenirs — locally-grown saffron, small-batch chocolate, handmade ceramics, and more — and graze among the food vendors serving tuna poke, fresh pasta, and falafel. Among newcomers, Maiz makes heirloom corn tortillas, freshly pressed for tacos, and masa for tamales.

Culinary creativity and an infectious sense of inclusion are captured in chef Kristi Brown’s dishes at Communion Restaurant and Bar. She calls her style “Seattle soul,” with a menu that includes handcrafted hummus with black-eyed peas, Washington-farmed clams and mussels, and catfish po’ mì. Tap your advisor to secure a table at this hard-to-book restaurant in the Central District.

Next to Seattle’s iconic Space Needle, get lost in the magic of glass artist Dale Chihuly at Chihuly Garden and Glass. Organic blooms, feathery shrubs, and aquatic plants rendered in vibrant glass spring to life in a centerpiece Glass House, eight dramatically lit galleries and a surrounding garden. The 100-foot-long suspended flower chain in the Glass House comprises — count ‘em — some 1,340 pieces of orange, amber, and yellow glass flowers.

Tune into Seattle’s legendary music scene with a trip to one of its newly reopened venues, including Sea Monster Lounge presenting funk, soul, and jazz acts, or the Belltown Yacht Club — word is grunge legends Nirvana used the basement space as a studio and rehearsal hall — for rock, punk, and R&B. Don’t miss the club’s impressive 16-foot-long sculpture made of broken and discarded instruments donated by local musicians.

Wander through the nearby nine-acre Olympic Sculpture Park to take in works by Richard Serra, Alexander Calder, and Louise Bourgeois, along with a beach on Puget Sound and views of the Seattle waterfront. Alongside its considerable culinary strengths, Seattle makes great beer. Head for happy hour to Belltown to sample the range of IPAs at Cloudburst Brewing Company. The tasting room in a former loading zone of a 120-year-old building, only adds to the charm.
