CAM Sunday | August 19 | 7 pm $80 | $70 | $60 Considered by many to be the next big female powerhouse in country music, singer-songwriter Cam has been dazzling country music fans worldwide since relocating to Nashville and signing with Arista. Hailing from San Francisco, Cam’s California roots give her country music an edgier, updated sound. Her storyteller lyrics strike a balance between wisdom and whimsy, and, judging by her growing fan base, this sort of mix is rather refreshing. In addition to writing and performing writing and performing her own work, Cam also penned the track “Fall Madly in Love with You” from Maggie Rose’s debut album “Cut to Impress,” as well as “Maybe You’re Right” from Miley Cyrus’ album “Bangerz.”

Raising questions about the nature of nature, Hsiung mines the fissures in our received ideas about landscape painting and abstraction; the carnal and the transcendent; the popular and the sublime.
Devon Tsuno California Seedlings Aug. 13 to May 31 Devon Tsuno takes contemporary art outside with California Seedlings, a mural project focusing on native vs. non-native vegetation. Influenced by Japanese, 19th century Ukiyo-e woodblock prints and fabric, his rich, densely layered works are inspired by the vigorous and dynamic flora competing for space in our urban environment.
Pável Acevedo Inland Empire Oct. 8 to Nov. 29 Pável Acevedo explores the political and personal effects of migration, immigration, borders, and the duality many immigrants contend with after leaving their homeland for a new nation. With Inland Empire, Acevedo melds elements of Mexican mural painting, printmaking with symbols and imagery from the codex of Huaxyacac and Nahuatl, the ancient Aztec language to explore what it means – metaphorically and practically – to reside on the outskirts, to commute between cultures, to live in an inconclusive state between families and between lands.
Self Help Graphics: Print Works Oct. 8 to Nov. 29 Self Help Graphics: Print Works surveys contemporary Chicana/o and Latinx artists engaged with the tradition of social and political printed art. Simultaneously vibrant works of art and primary historical documents, these handmade and unique prints make visible histories, communities, struggles and triumphs that are often hidden or forgotten.

Vibrant Bounty: Chinese Folk Art from the Shaanxi Region Student Art Gallery (Library 206) Jan. 28 to March 14 Vibrant Bounty invites visitors on a journey through Shaanxi Province, one of the cradles of Chinese civilization. The exhibition’s tempera paintings celebrate Chinese rural life and traditional Shaanxi customs, helping us better understand a people half a world away. This exhibition, a collaboration between the Art Gallery and International Services and Programs, is underwritten in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Jessica Rath Fruiting Bodies: A Survey of Recent Works Jan. 28 to April 7 Jessica Rath’s poetic, sculptural installations examine how human containment of the land affects non-human species. From the propagation of agricultural plants to the sensoria of bees, Fruiting Bodies brings together nearly a decade of Rath’s extraordinary art practice.

Santa Clarita Master Chorale Songs of the Season Saturday, Dec. 8, 7pm
It is the music that unites our spirits at the holiday season. With selections from Handel’s glorious “Judas Maccabeus,” the Master Chorale honors Hanukkah; with Mac Wilberg’s majestic “Tres Cantus Laudendi” with brass and percussion, the chorale proclaims the season; with a flurry of carols, both secular and sacred, the chorale celebrates Christmas. The Master Chorale will bring the spirit of the holidays to full sound with “Christmas at the Movies,” “A Pentatonix Christmas Medley,” an audience carol sing, and heart-warming arrangements by the renowned Shawn Kirschner.

Sunday, March 10, 2019, 4pm “The Creation,” considered by many to be the greatest masterpiece by Franz Joseph Haydn, is a musical illustration of the biblical account of the beginning of life. The Master Chorale will perform the favorite choruses and solos from this splendid work. John Rutter’s “Requiem” has become one of the most popular settings of this text that honors the passing of life. Performed together with orchestra, they offer a musical experience that celebrates the full circle of life.
Color Me Music
Saturday, June 1, 2019, 7pm From “Yellow Submarine” to “Brown Eyed Girl,” there are a million songs that have colors in their titles. The Master Chorale can’t sing them all, but, along with its children’s choir, it will sing a kaleidoscope of songs that will paint the evening just right. The featured work is “Mass in Blue” by English composer Will Todd – not just a collaboration, but a coloration of the traditional liturgical words with the hues of contemporary jazz. Santa Clarita Philharmonic Light Up the Holidays Sunday, Dec. 2, 3pm
The Santa Clarita Philharmonic begins its sixth season with a lighter approach to the holidays. The first half of the concert will feature orchestral holiday selections to put everyone in a joyous spirit. The second half will feature vocalist Rachel Cole joining the orchestra for several original compositions and some holiday favorites. SCHOLARLY PRESENTATIONS Pompeii
Michael McCaffrey and Kevin Anthony Wednesday, Nov. 14, 6pm Over the last three years, professors McCaffrey and Anthony have conducted tours of the city of Pompeii on each of their College of the Canyons study-abroad programs to Italy. Their combined research and study have created a unique expertise on the lives of the citizenry, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and the art, architecture, history and relevant tourism aspects of this UNESCO-designated historical site. The presentation will include: The dynamics of the eruption; political history of the city and relationship with Rome; daily lives of the citizens and their living arrangements; diet of the citizenry; related tourism points of interest; art with an emphasis on the Villa of the Mysteries, which is rarely visited by tourists; architecture of the arena, theaters and bathhouses; and the water and sewage systems of Pompeii in contrast to Herculaneum.
The B*tch Project
Ruth Rasool and Deems Morrione Thursday, March 28, 2019, 6pm The discussion is predicated on the idea that there is a kind of political paralysis in the U.S. right now that reflects a breakdown in what philosopher Michel Foucault terms “governmentality.” Because the center no longer holds, fetishistic arenas (like fashion) are where political dramas play out. The presenters believe that by examining the runway shows of the past two years, one can detect a kind of cultural disarray that is evident in the shift from more orderly silhouettes to those that project instability; varieties in styling that are overtly political; and a kind of mania in the fashion world as a mise en abyme for the culture at large as seen in runway shows. This presentation is an extension of a Facebook initiative called “The B*tch Project,” which focuses on interesting trends in the fashion industry.
