PIONEERING HISTORY
INTRODUCTION
T
he Canyon Country Campus (CCC) is College of the Canyons’ second campus, situated on a 70-acre hillside high-desert property at 17200 Sierra Hwy., 9.8 miles east of the district’s Valencia Campus. The mission of the campus is to provide access to highquality instructional programs, supportive student services, and meaningful community partnerships in the Santa Clarita Community College District’s sizeable service area. CCC is still a young campus, but it is distinguished from traditional branch campuses by the impressive, consistent, and robust level of support services, instructional offerings, and vibrant event activities offered, befitting a larger, more established facility. This is all the more impressive when considered in the context of current modular facilities and the many space challenges faced both by instructional and student support programs on campus. While the district prepared for much-anticipated growth and development of the campus, it has intentionally committed to operating the Canyon Country Campus at a comprehensive scale in order to fulfill its commitment to the community while meeting the expectations of the College of the Canyons reputation for excellence. The 10th anniversary features many exciting milestones, including the groundbreaking for a state-of-the-art Science Center, which will begin to transform the physical plant and instructional pathways of the campus. 2
OPENING A CAMPUS
A
lthough celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the history of the Canyon Country Campus goes back to the 1990s, when the college assessed the need for a second campus in high-growth areas in the eastern and southern portions of the Santa Clarita Valley. A California Community College Chancellor’s Office study identified the need for several new community college campuses and educational centers throughout the state, and it recommended that College of the Canyons provide both a new campus and an education center to serve demand created by the expansive growth of the community. In 2000, COC leased space in what was then a newly constructed joint L.A. County and City of Santa Clarita library building near Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway. The college named it the Canyon Country ACCESS Center, and it consisted of four classrooms and a computer lab. Surveys of community and business leaders were conducted to identify community need relevant to the new campus plans. In 2004, the college began holding instruction in several classrooms at Golden Valley High School. Between the ACCESS Center and Golden Valley, 1,500 students per year took classes in the eastern Santa Clarita Valley. Accordingly, the district moved forward to purchase a campus site in Canyon Country.
3
COMMUNITY SUPPORT & GROWTH
I
n 2001, local voters passed Measure C, an $82 million general obligation bond. The purchase of a site on the south or east side of the valley was listed as one of the uses for these bond funds. Based on community input, a second campus in the eastern Santa Clarita Valley was listed as a district priority in the 2001 Educational and Facilities Master Plan. Community leaders assisted with a site selection committee, which helped identify potential campus locations. The college ultimately identified a series of parcels at the current Sierra Highway location. These parcels and modular buildings were purchased through general obligation bond funds including Measure M, which was passed by local voters in 2006. The young campus also benefitted from a strong community advisory group that regularly supported and engaged with campus planning, providing key insights and partnerships to guide campus development. Support for the campus has been consistently enthusiastic, denoting strong community interest in a thriving eastside College of the Canyons location.

Instruction began at the Canyon Country Campus on Monday, Aug. 27, 2007. The “first class” included more than 3,400 students during the opening week, and a robust community advisory committee group joined in the celebrations. Since 2007, the campus has grown extensively, assisting with the high local demand for access to higher education and serving our community in a more comprehensive way. New student gathering spaces, remodeled instructional spaces, and construction of the Applied Technology Education Center in 2011 are among the marquee facilities milestones since the campus opened. The continued growth of the campus has brought to life the college’s vision of being a leader in institutional effectiveness, student support, and excellence in teaching and learning. Most importantly, the campus significantly increased student access, a key goal of the college. 5
A COMPREHENSIVE CAMPUS INSTRUCTION
I
t is remarkable that more than 5,000 classes have been offered at the Canyon Country Campus since 2007, and more than 55,000 unduplicated students have received credit for coursework. SUPPORT SERVICES & STAFFING
I
n 2007, part-time students were the primary attendees at the Canyon Country Campus. Since then, enrollment by full-time students has increased significantly. Students can attend classes at both the Valencia and Canyon Country Campuses, and a substantial number of students do so. Since 2,000 students take classes exclusively at the Canyon Country Campus each semester, campus planning has ensured that CCC provides consistently staffed student service offices that support student engagement and learning. In the most recent graduating class, more than 73 percent of graduating students districtwide took at least one class at the Canyon Country Campus. This compelling figure demonstrates how quickly the campus has been incorporated into district operations and how vital it has become for the academic success of students.

Staffing at the Canyon Country Campus has increased through the years to keep up with the growth of the student population. Current staffing includes full- and part-time staff in a variety of departments, campus administration and faculty ranks, with varying schedules determined each semester. Staffing for student-facing services is designed to ensure that students have access to the same resources provided at the Valencia Campus. In the next few years, the campus is poised for growth in facilities, academic programs and student population. With this growth, additional support staff will be needed. New fulltime faculty members will be a critical part of campus programs as existing programs are expanded and new programs and facilities are established, such as the forthcoming Science Center.
