Dwight Yoakam • 11.12.17

DEAR

Friends,

I’m proud to introduce our 2017-18 performing arts season, which reflects a diverse range of performances suitable for audiences of all ages. The new season continues our tradition of providing great shows close to home.

Three Dog Night 09.16.17

The Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons has been serving the community since Oct. 15, 2004, when a sold-out production of our Theatre, Music and Dance Departments’ “Big River” christened our stage. Since then, the Performing Arts Center has established itself as the Santa Clarita Valley’s premier venue for the performing arts. Some half a million people have attended more than 150 professional touring shows here. More than 5,000 College of the Canyons students have cultivated their acting, dancing and singing skills on our stage. Thousands more have performed here as members of community-based arts organizations. And, some 75,000 students from every local school district have experienced the arts as part of our K-12 Arts Education Outreach Program.

Frozen Sing-Along 10.07.17

Dwight Yoakam 11.12.17

That’s pretty impressive! But the best is yet to come. The Performing Arts Center is fulfilling a dream that began with Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook, who envisioned a first-class venue where professional acts, community groups and college students could perform. That dream continues for all who have entered this building. Thank you for your patronage and

enjoy th e show!

Let Our Spirits Soar

Saturday, March 10, 2018, 7 p.m. Composer Dan Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living” has become one of most compelling major works for choirs and orchestra in the last few years. In rich and warm strains, it celebrates all our lives, both of those already passed and those of us still here to enjoy this precious gift. No less uplifting is Handel’s “Utrecht Jubilate,” written to celebrate a hard-fought peace, and we will close with the fourth movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, his ecstatic “Ode to Joy.”

It’s All About the Music! Saturday, June 2, 2018, 7 p.m.

Bass, treble, and everything in between will be ringing from the stage, as the Chorale and our youth choirs celebrate the gift that keeps on giving - music itself. Handel, Elgar, Rutter, Memley – even some Allan Petker – will be on the bill. It’ll be a grand night for singing sweet music and filling your heart.

Celebration!

Sunday, December 10, 2018, 3 p.m. The Santa Clarita Philharmonic kicks off its fifth season with its premiere performance at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center. The orchestra celebrates with our Music Director, Jeffery Gilbert, as the title of “Master of Music” is conferred upon him through his work at California State University Northridge. The program will feature a variety of musical genres and styles demonstrating the breadth of the orchestra.

Youth and Romance Sunday, June 3, 2018, 3 p.m. For our spring concert, the Santa Clarita Philharmonic will present both youth and romance. Youth will be represented by the winner of the orchestra’s 4th annual Student Concerto Competition. The competition is open to all junior and senior high school students in the Santa Clarita Valley. The romance will be represented by music from the Romantic period (1830–1900) of classical music. The orchestra will feature Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1, “Spring,” and Max Reger’s Concerto for Orchestra in the Old Style. While written after 1900, Reger’s Concerto retains the broad, melodic passages as the works of the Romantic period.
