Season Year Round In many areas of the country, there is a distinct buying season, when there are more buyers, more homes on the market, and more closed sales. For a variety of reasons, buyers tend to take a break in the winter and make a comeback in the spring. The buying season then lasts until fall, when sales begin to slow, and the cycle starts all over again. What many buyers in Southwest Florida don’t realize is that the conventional buying season logic doesn’t apply here. For a variety of reasons, the Southwest Florida real estate market doesn’t have the same ebb and flow that

other areas do – the flow of buyers, listings, and closed sales remains pretty constant here. A neighborhood - by neighborhood analysis of the areas I serve demonstrates that in Southwest Florida, buyers buy all year round. For example, Shadow Wood at the Brooks has had right around 100 properties active over the last year, with only a slight decline over time – in keeping with Southwest Florida’s downward trend in inventory. Likewise, the neighborhood has had a fairly steady rate of three to five closed sales each month, with a slight upward trend in sales that reflects the

stabilization of the market as a whole. As another example, The Colony has had roughly 80 to 100 active listings every month, with the same gradual decline in inventory; and around six to eight closed sales each month, with a similarly positive trend.

Since the changes are gradual and steady, it is clear that what we are seeing is the market stabilizing in each of these neighborhoods individually – NOT a seasonal ebb and flow. Instead, the trends remain constant throughout the year. What we are seeing in these individual neighborhoods are also indicative of the trends found in the Naples, Bonita, and Estero market areas as a whole, which shows that the individual neighborhoods’ sales are consistent with those in the larger market. Perhaps one of the reasons for the year-round buying season has to do

with weather. Areas with warm-weather buying seasons usually have colder, wetter weather in the winter. Whether because buyers don’t relish the thought of going around and seeing homes in that weather, or because homes simply show better in the growing season, we don’t have to worry about that here. Nice weather year round keeps buyers interested and homes ready to show! Another possible factor in the real estate buying season is school. Ideally, most families would prefer to move during summer, so Continued on page 7

Living Waters Loves ... Integrity By Pastor Ed Ivie

What’s in the Showroom: Living with Integrity Integrity seems to be one of those buzz words that everyone knows but few people know the true meaning. Integrity is basically the basis of who we are and what we include in our character. The character that one has is often the difference

between success and failure. I heard a definition of character several years ago that really stood out to me, “Character and Integrity is who you are when no one else is around.” People behave according to their value systems, beliefs, and principles. So why is integrity such a big deal? GOD VALUES INTEGRITY. A lack of character and integrity can damage our relationship with God and others. It also can damage our personal lives as well. There are huge benefits to living with integrity. First of all, there is joy and happiness. Knowing that the decisions that we make in life are morally and ethically right help us to live with a sense peace. So many people today are looking for peace in their lives. Peace can from knowing that at the conclusion of the day the decisions that you have made reflect character, morality and honesty. I would encourage you today to take time to stop and reflect. Are there decisions that you are making being valuated on the basis of integrity? In

your relationships are you morally and ethically at peace? If not, take time to stop and reflect and ask God to help you. The book of James in the New Testament tells us that if we lack wisdom that we can ask God and He will give it to us. My prayer for you is that you will make a conscious effort to live your life with a determination to do what is right. Building and growing your heart and mind through God’s Word (The Bible) will no doubt help make integrity are part of who you are. A close friend of mine once said, “Integrity means you have more in the warehouse than is in the showroom.” What are you showing off today?

É»´´ô ¼«¸ÿ The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is advising hikers, hunters, fishers, and golfers to take extra precautions and keep alert for alligators while in Osceola, Polk, Brevard and Orange Counties. They advise people to wear noise-producing devices; such as, little bells on their clothing, to alert, but not startle, the alligators unexpectedly. They also advise the carrying of pepper spray in case of an encounter with an alligator. It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of alligator activity. People should recognize the difference between small young alligator and large adult alligator droppings. Young alligator droppings are smaller and contain fish bones and possibly bird feathers. Adult alligators droppings have little bells in them and smell like pepper spray.

aroundtown Conservancy of Southwest Florida Introduces Two New 2010 Summer Camp Themes Conservancy of Southwest Florida award-winning Summer Eco-Camp is geared toward kindergarten through eighth grade graduates and is filled with nature-inspired lessons and activities. Weekly sessions run June 14th through the week of July 19th, depending on age level. The week-long day camps feature daily field trips to eco-destinations, hands-on exploration and live encounters with native wildlife including birds, reptiles and marine animals. The new themes are “Step Outside,” designed to transform campers into “biologists,” while the second camp, “WOW! Wonders of Wildlife,” includes major encounters with animals to transform campers into wildlife “experts.” Early registration for Conservancy members begins April 1 in the Conservancy auditorium from 8 AM – 1 PM. Registration opens to the public on April 2. The eco-camps are expected to fill up quickly and space is very limited. Previous camp participants will find several changes in 2010. The “Seahorses” group camps (kindergarten graduates) are now extended to full-day sessions. Since the Conservancy of Southwest Florida Nature Center is undergoing major renovations, the number of camps and participants for each camp will be limited. Summer Camp operations are moving to the FGCU Renaissance Academy Naples Center (1010 5th Ave. South.) This location offers a convenient and safe learning environment for fun and exciting Summer Camp activities while the Conservancy Nature Center undergoes sustainable renovations. Registration forms and more information are available at www.conservancy. org/camp. The Naples Daily News and Bonita Daily News have recognized the Conservancy of Southwest Florida as a Southwest Florida Choice winner for Education/Nature Venue each year since 2004. More Details on Camp Themes: The first new camp theme is “Step Outside!” Southwest Florida is home to several unique and interconnected ecosystems, some found nowhere else in the world. Continued from page 1 that they disrupt their children’s education as little as possible. To this end, many buyers who have children start shopping for a home in the spring. The fact that the busy season in many areas ends around October, only a couple of months after school lets back in, is probably not a coincidence. The fact that Southwest Florida doesn’t follow this pattern, but instead has a pretty steady stream of buyers throughout the year, probably has to do with the demographics of our buyers. Considerably tax benefits for retirees has traditionally made our area a popular choice, and of course retirees aren’t going to make their decisions about when to start shopping for a home based on when school is in session. The same goes for many of our other buyers, whether they are international buyers, folks looking for a vacation home, or young couples who are looking to cash in on the competitive prices currently available. My point is, Southwest Florida real estate is always in season. Although many buyers assume that we suffer the same slowdown in the winter months as other areas, the truth is that here you can list your home for sale in December and still have the same chances of selling as you would in June. Regardless of the reason, the fact remains that there is a year-round demand for luxury real estate in Southwest Florida! If you would like to discuss seasonal sales trends at greater length, or if you are interested in buying or selling a home, please don’t hesitate to contact me. As a luxury real estate professional with lots of experience in Southwest Florida, I am extremely familiar with the individual neighborhoods and their sales trends, and I am always happy to answer your questions regarding the market! Thomas Edison Invented Everything!

Call 992-8896

According to a 1911 policy with the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, Edison had five dots tattooed on his left forearm. No one knew what the dots meant. Interestingly, Edison was credited for inventing the basic tattoo machine. In 1876, he patented the Stencil-Pens, an engraving device that many years later was used his invention to give himself a tattoo.

May Madness Pet Adoptions At Lee County Domestic Animal Services! Lee County Domestic Animal Services is promoting pet adoptions during May with half off the regular fee for all pets. The promotion kicks off May 1st with a special event. Lee County Domestic Animal Services is going mad during the month of May! During May Madness all pets may be adopted for half off the regular adoption fee. The month-long promotion will kick-off Saturday, May 1st with a special adoptathon event sponsored by the US Postal Service. The USPS will unveil the new “Adopt a Shelter Pet” stamp and offer activities and crafts for children and families at the shelter from 11:30 am until 2:00 pm. Adoptions will continue until 3:30 pm. LCDAS hopes this tremendous incentive will encourage prospective owners to adopt a shelter pet and save the life of a homeless animal rather than buy from pet stores or breeders. Shelter pets have long endured the reputation of being

Featured Pets Name: Tammy ID #: 465879 Breed: Shepherd Mix Sex Female Age: Four months old Color: Brown Comments: I was dumped off on the side of the road and a kind Animal Control Officer brought me to the shelter. Being dumped was very scary so I’ve been in a foster home until now so I could gain some confidence. Now I am back at the shelter and ready for my permanent home. In my foster home I learned my house manners and how to use a doggy door. I still may want to hide sometimes because I’m shy but will warm up quickly to you. I’m going to be a large dog and I am growing fast. I had lots of dog company in my foster home and would love to be someone’s loving companion. So what do you think? Are we a match? Adoption Fee: $47.50 (1/2 off the regular adoption fee of $95 during the May Madness Adoption Promotion at LCDAS).

Name: Chleo ID #: 469057 Breed: Domestic Short Hair Sex: Spayed Female Age: 1 year old Color: Patch Tabby Comments: I am a very sweetnatured cat and I love to play but I’m ready to dedicate myself to being your lap cat. I’ve been around other pets but I’d be most happy as your one-and-only love! Adoption Fee: $25 (1/2 off the

regular adoption fee of $50 during the May Madness Adoption Promotion at LCDAS).

“damaged goods.” The reality, however, is quite the opposite. “We frequently hear from adopters how shocked their friends are that they adopted such a great pet from a shelter,” says Ria Brown, LCDAS Public Information Officer. “The economy has contributed to the homeless pet problem but, we also live in a throwa-way society. Unfortunately, this practice includes pets.” As a result shelters are the best place to find a variety of pets to fit your lifestyle from puppies or kittens to adult pets that already have some training. May’s reduced adoption fee will still include the complete package of services consisting of sterilization, age appropriate vaccinations, county license, microchip ID, worming, flea treatment, a heartworm test for dogs, feline aids and leukemia test for cats, 10 Day Health Guarantee, and a bag of Hill’s Science Diet dog or cat food. The adoption package is valued at over $500! View the variety of pets waiting to be adopted at www.LeeLostPets.com or head to the shelter at 5600 Banner Drive, Fort Myers next to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office off Six Mile Cypress Parkway. Adoption hours are Monday through Saturday from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. For more information about pets for adoption go to www.LeeLostPets.com or call (239) 533-7387 (LEE-PETS). The website updates hourly so current information is always available. If you are inquiring about a pet you have seen online, please have the animal ID number ready for faster assistance.
