Born in 1987 and graduated from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. I majored in industrial design and took inspiration from traditional craft art. I learned lacquer ware, metalworking, leather goods, pottery and porcelain, and glass art,and embedded them into innovative designs hoping to make the fabrication process to obvious in daily life. In my mind, there is nothing that I can’t do in design field. Just like a chef mixes all the ingredients into a delicious meal, I do the same when I design. I have been a curator for

know that it’s still not enough as a designer. Through ten years of dedication and training, all of of my skills have compounded and metamorphosed, and now I am confident that I can do more and greater design. In the words of Charles Eames, I had a flash of inspiration, a kind of 30-year flash. My goal is to design heirlooms, objects that people pass down from generation to generation with pride. But I know I might need ten more years to do this.

The top virtue is like water, benefitting all, contending with none, and is content with what all others disdain. Therefore it is close to the Word. — Lao-Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer

I have over five years of professional design experience for Franz Collection Inc., Studio Qiao and Layer One Co. Ltd.(ATOM 3D Printer). Through my working experience, I had to become liquid enough to fill different containers. I can do my job well no matter what kind of design, but I really want to know what will I become without limits. So I need to start a journey to recreate myself.

01 ATOM Delta 3D Printer

I joined Atom 3D Printers (Layer One Co., Ltd.) in late 2012. As a start-up company, we only had three members in charge of everything. I took charge of almost every part of the design including graphic, logos, product and package, packaging, and parts management. Now, we have a team of fifteen, and have sold 2,500 DIY Kits in Taiwan alone. Atom is now the most popular 3D printer in Taiwan.

From Atom 1.0 to Atom 2.5, we took a long time to develop not only the mechanical parts but also the DIY experience. We provide a fine manual and continually perfected the assembly instructions to improve the experience from beginning to end.

The Atom 2.5 series is a culmination of years of design and engineering experience. Its all-metal structure provides unsurpassed stability for excellent print quality, and its assembly manual guides the user through clear, easy-to-follow directions. Atom looks stylish and moves elegantly like no other printer in the world.

I joined Layer One as a designer in late 2013. First, I set about rebranding the company and product. Second, I designed the assembly manuals for the Atom and its various upgrade kits. At the same time,I got a chance to redesign some of the component parts of ATOM 2.0. Finally, once I was promoted to creative director I rebuilt many of the details for the next generation ATOM 2.5 series.

Layer One’s founder and I had met in early 2016 to whether to compete in the consumer 3D printing market. We knew that there was a huge demand in the consumer 3D printer market, but according to our experience, 3D printers still needed some know-how and experience to be able to use them easily, far from the experience of plug-n-print paper printers. Every other company that had entered the fray had failed in one way or another. And, we were just a small company with 15 employees. Although we had started in designing two consumer 3D printers since June 2014. We decided not to focus on the consumer market because it too much investment in cost and service. Instead, we would focus on professional 3D printers and provide them with different kinds of modules. The two consumer printers, Proton and Neutron, would be turned converted into fully open-source machines with the files available on our official website and the parts readily available on the internet.

Since using 3D printing for prototyping, it had sped up our research and development. From the first generation we used 3D printed parts with aluminum extrusions with the newest generation using all metal parts. We improved lots of details and manufacturing methods so that we can proudly provide users with a great DIY experience. Even today 3D printing is still the best way for us to develop new products.

RepRap takes the form of a free desktop 3D printer capable of printing plastic objects. Since many parts of RepRap are made from plastic and RepRap prints those parts, RepRap self-replicates by making a kit of itself - a kit that anyone can assemble given time and materials. It also means that - if you’ve got a RepRap - you can print lots of useful stuff, and you can print another RepRap for a friend.

In Support of Creativity - Project: Materialize

18 19

Project: Materialize With “Project: Materialize” Atom seeks to collaborate with artists and designers of all kinds to show how 3D printing can enhance self-expression for anyone. The first collaboration of Project: Materialize is with photographer Sydney Sie who, with the help of the Atom Design Team, has created striking dioramas representing different ways and forms of life. In the photos Sydney Sie uses color, light, and shape to accelerate the viewer’s imagination into parallel universes of abstract thought. Atom has supported artists and designers from day one, making a machine that is both easy to use, and delivers awesome results.

Introduction

3D landscape the art transcends emotion and becomes a rational argument. Technology is allowing artists to break through historic restrictions as artists are no longer limited to traditional craft techniques to produce intricate physical objects. The creative goal of project materialize is to demonstrate that 3D printers are no longer a cold technology limited to engineering professionals, but can trigger the perfect combination of the material and spiritual.

The Exhibition Team After a number highly successful crowdfunding campaigns, Atom has built out a team of talented engineers and designers focused on the development of 3D printing and Taiwan’s specialized manufacturing sector. as and achieve their goals in photography, dance, music, science, and technology, among many others.

The Artist - Sydney Sie Sydney Sie uses gradients of color, surreal imagery, the female body, and other graphical elements of composition, color, and layout to construct ambiguous, two dimensional worlds in her photographs. Sydney Sie’s creative approach to photography is to create a strong impression of the external form with an implied narrative buried within. She deliberately uses the inertia of the viewer’s attention to move beyond the bright colors and into the narrative story. Sydney Sie uses 3D models to “achieve the impossible,” taking a surrealistic approach to dioramic photography. After numerous discussions with the Atom Design Team, the diagrams for each of the photographs began to take form…

With the production of industrial design point of view, combined with the use of different materials for the lacquer industry, seeking out new possibilities. We expect to create new styles and features by different application and interpretation. We attempt to show lacquer’s possibility and design modern lacquer base product. This project is an experiment -oriented design strategy, so the use of the display elements, will retain traces of construction, and use the most basic and simple decoration, let the attention of visitors focus on the product.

Lacquer Plan Piao Vase [飄]

Traditionally we use wood, ceramics and metal as body materials. Yet as the trends and eras shifted, so should body materials. In this peace of lacquer work, we use a fabric body as the base of the bodiless lacquer; consequently, the softness of fabric creates a contrast with the hardening caused by anointing. Through sawing the waterproof fabric body piece by piece, and anointing the bottom side, weight is successfully provided for the vase to stand.

Lacquer Plan Man Light [滿]

While learning how to make lacquer ware, it strikes me that the core value of lacquer comes from the nature of its handcraft. The key to lacquer’s rich tone of color is the repeated process of anointing and polishing. However, to emphasize the character of handcrafting, we expect that the meticulous, glossy feature with its raw, original texture are demonstrated simultaneously on this piece of work, aiming to illustrate the original quality of lacquer as well as the polished luster. Additionally, by allowing this piece of work to be “incompletely” finished during the manufacturing phase, and disclosing the simple process of industrialization, we hope to make industrial design friendlier for the general public to appreciate.
