As temperatures drop and winter weather sets in, staying safe becomes even more important. These four tips to help you safeguard your home while protecting your loved ones during the colder months.

Never leave candles, space heaters, or fireplaces unattended, as they can quickly become fire hazards. Be sure to test your smoke detectors, and replace any dead batteries.

As wood burns, a sticky substance known as creosote builds up in the chimney. Schedule to clean your fireplace at least once a year to remove the creosote buildup that can ignite.

Avoid overloading any electrical outlets, as they are a major cause of electrical fires in the home. You should also inspect any applicance electrical cords for any fraying or cracking.

Immediately clean and remove spilled foods from cooking surfaces, and be mindful about where you place flammable items like dish towels to avoid kitchen fires.
