Public lighting of Menorah ON SUNDAY 13th December the Southern Costa Blanca Jewish Community will celebrate their 3rd public lighting of a Menorah at Playa Flamenca. Chanukah is a Jewish festival that dates back to the year 165 BCE. At that time Jerusalem was ruled by a Syrian king called Antiochus. He looted and damaged the Temple in Jerusalem and stopped the Jews from practicing their laws and religion. This upset the Jews so much that they rebelled. The rebellion was successful and the Temple was restored to its former state. A new altar was consecrated but there was only enough oil for the altar lamp to burn for one day. However the lamp burnt for eight days and a miracle was declared by the Jewish leaders.

To celebrate this miracle an eight-day observance is created ever year by lighting one candle each day in a Menorah (a special candelabra) until all eight candles are burning. The Menorah is placed in public places to remind people of the miracle. This year the Southern Costa Blanca Jewish Community will be lighting the Menorah on the steps of the esplanade opposite the Lobster Restaurant at Playa Flamenca Beach at 7.30pm on Sunday 13th December. Following the lighting ceremony we shall be serving wine and donuts. They would like to invite everyone to the event, be they Jews, Christians, people of every religion and even those of none. injury, defenders can simply call out 'tackle' when in a 50/50 situation, which helps to avoid any possible contact while allowing the ball carrier to pass the ball. This takes out one element of the possible risk of injury. The majority of those talking up Walking Football never thought they would kick a ball around again after they turned 40 and hung up their boots many years ago. Along with the basic fitness, fun, fresh air and comradeship that the game provides, the only downside

seems to be that as with any new sport, players are rediscovering muscles that they forgotten existed, while a trip to the pharmacy for 'rub' and muscle relaxers seems to be on the shopping list. Those interested in finding out more should just turn up any Friday morning at 10.30am, apart from Red Days and Holidays, on Campo number 3, at Torrevieja's Sports City. It costs just 2.00€ a session and everyone is welcome. Please bring a bottle of water, plus shorts or loose pants and training shoes.

Walking Football stretches its legs Following on the success of clubs from Los Montesinos, Lo Crispin, Playa Flamenca and others, CD Torrevieja's supporters club The Torry Army have now added Walking Football to their social agenda. The new initiative has been developed by the CD Torrevieja International Supporters Club, the Torry Army, who since the majority of their members are over 50, have an inbuilt market to attract former players back to

the football field. The first session attracted 16 players, with ages ranging from the fifties though to 79 with the majority being in their last sixties and early seventies. The reasons behind the activity are many and varied. For some such as Colin, he said: “I've not a pair of football boots on since I played with the Sappers back in 1959”, with most of those present not having kicked a ball around in a semi-competitive

atmosphere for at least twenty years, if not thirty plus. The sessions are open to anyone 50 plus. Each session starts and finishes with a short stretching session, to warm up and then cool down the muscles, many of which had not been stretched for many a decade. After a few basic passing drills, which also included the 'WAGS' joining in the fun, two teams did friendly battle, taking care not to tackle too hard, while not running but walking around the pitch. In order to minimize the risk of any

Stand against Gender Violence

By Andrew Atkinson Los Montesinos Mayor Jose Manuel Butron joined in a meeting outside the Alicante based town's Town Hall for the International day for the eradication of the violence against women: Feminist movement of Valencia. Fake shampoo made in Spain A network has been closed that could produce 200,000 cans of fake shampoo in Alicante, Malaga and Cadiz. It is not known whether consumers who have used it have noticed any damage to their hair, but the products are no longer available because the National Police has dismantled a network that had the capacity to produce 200,000 bottles of counterfeit shampoo of a famous brand. National Police arrested seven people in Malaga, Cadiz and Alicante. In the operation they seized 120,000 counterfeit shampoo bottles, most of them made in the province of Alicante, one in Agost and two in the Alicante polygons of Garachico and Agua Amarga. Two of the seven arrests were made in Alicante and Agost, the police said. The dismantled network had a great infrastructure where besides making false Shampoo, they labelled and marketed the items through a wholesaler, which generated millions in profits. The Counterfeit items were sold through a wholesaler that reached small businesses through intermediaries, but they were also trying to export to other countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. The investigation began in April this year when police received information about several members of a criminal group operating in the Costa del Sol. The officers located the suspects in Marbella and found that they had a production chain mounted clandestinely in a ship in the region. The shampoo was forged with a famous brand name and its external appearance was virtually identical to the original product. To prepare the shampoo the organisation had among its members a chemical expert who was known by the nickname "Professor" and who was responsible for making the formula. The production level of this

organization was so high that a single warehouse was required to store all the surplus items manufactured. Police say the network had open lines of exports to countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. The agents have been detected during the investigation of several different road transport logistics companies, in addition to seizing a shipment of goods to Germany. Once it was possible to identify all involved, police arrested seven people, including the two leaders of the network, chemical specialist and three keepers responsible for assembly and distribution. Of the seven arrested, six were sent to prison and all are charged with crimes of belonging to a criminal organisation against industrial property and money laundering. In addition to the arrests police made three house searches in

Alicante and Agost and eight in the provinces of Malaga and Cadiz. Such inspections allowed them to seize 120,000 cans of counterfeit shampoo, industrial machinery and chemicals to produce the product, thousands of labels and five luxury cars. Police reported that the members of this network were an objective of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), which was concerned about the huge amount of profits generated this fraudulent activity to the criminal organization and the fact that it had not been dismantled despite previous arrests. The operation involved groups of the General Commissariat of the Judicial Police Specialist Crime agents of Alicante and Cadiz, UDYCO Torremolinos, Judicial Police Barcelona, Malaga Tax Agency and the European Anti-Fraud Office.

Torrevieja, prepared for Christmas

On Sunday the traditional Christmas tree lighting of the Plaza de la Constitution took place. As is the norm, the beautiful Christmas Tree was donated by the Nordic group of Torrevieja, as a token of gratitude to the city for their warm welcome. The tree's lights were turned on by the mayor, José Manuel Dolon, who was accompanied with several members of the government team along with many former and present Partido Popular Councillors. The tree helps set off the Christmas lights that now adorn the downtown streets of the city of salt.

Prime Minister Rajoy greets Torrevieja with his presence in Valencia

More than one hundred Partido Popular supporters from the City of Salt travelled to the capital of the region, to attend one of the meetings held by the president of Spain, Mario Rajoy who is standing as a candidate for re-election for the National elections on December 20th, 2015. The Torrevieja delegation was headed by the president of the local Party, Eduardo Dolon, and attended by the No. 3 candidate to Congress for the province of Alicante, JoaquĂn Albaladejo, along with several town councillors and a representation of youth of New Generations, along with the presence of the Provincial President, Luis Maria Pizana and Adrian Ballester. The Hemisferic City of Arts and Letters hosted over 14,000 people to listen to the president who said, "We want to move forward," to "continue the

recuperation." Every vote that does not go to the PP, "is a wasted vote for employment". The president argued that there was a need to "face the future with optimism." "They stop speaking ill of Spain, we have had a crisis but we are overcoming this. We are the party of Spain and the Constitution," he said. The party leadership maintains that they will improve poll numbers. In Valencia, according to sources of the PP, they had a percentage of 28.5% of the vote but have now climbed to 31.2%. They maintain that they can reach up to 35%, thanks to the drive of the municipal vote. Rajoy insists that his party will win the elections. In the popular ranks feelings remain very positive. The president warned yesterday: "You should take the PP seriously."

Icing won't be on the cake in Gibraltar

With the Gibraltar open snooker event taking place in December, Coastrider sports reporter Andrew Atkinson looks back on covering the green baize in the UK for 20 years. Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins once pulled up a chair, sat next to me, and started to sing: "If I knew you were coming I'd have baked a cake!" It was way back in the eighties, while I was covering the Coral UK Championships at Preston Guild Hall the glory days when Higgins, Steve Davis, Jimmy White, Cliff Thorburn, Kirk Stevens, Terry Griffiths, and Bill Werbeniuk, who once called me 'a gentleman, and a scholar', to name a few, took to the green baize. Canadian, 'Big Bill' Werbeniuk died, aged 56, in 2003. I recall I exclusively told the story in the National press about former World Champion Peter Ebdon falling asleep at the wheel of his car on a Motorway. Thankfully Ebdon lived to tell me the story. And I exclusively reported on 2002 LG Cup Champion Chris Small's suicidal thoughts, brought on by his Ankylosing Spondylitis condition, also revealed in the national press. Six-time world champion Davis, whom I've known since the early eighties, talked to me a length about the 'hate' between him and Higgins - rivalry at its hottest. In reality it was never a 'hate' of each other. I was stood next to Barry Hearn, the organiser of the Gibraltar Open, during December 11-13, when at The Guild Hall in Preston, when Davis led Higgins 7-0 in the final of the UK Championship in 1983. Two-times world champion Higgins went on to win 16-15. I am still friends with Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White - and remember when I went to a night club with him and his ex-wife Maureen in Preston. White's fans were buying him drink-after-drink despite telling them he didn't want one I think it was me who had to drink them! And the time when world champion 'Rocket' Ronnie O'Sullivan gave me an exclusive for the Mail on Sunday - when he said he'd rather be potting plants, than potting balls! There were other greats I met and interviewed: including

former world champions Dennis Taylor and Ray Reardon. And I'll always remember when Joe Coral himself invited me to a VIP party at the Guild Hall in Preston. I can still hear Higgins' voice singing to me: 'Well, well, well, look who's here. I haven't seen you in many a year. If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake, baked a cake, baked a cake. If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake. Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do. Had you dropped me a letter, I'd a-hired a band. Grandest band in the land. Had you dropped me a letter, I'd a-hired a band. And spread the welcome mat for you. Oh, I don't know where you came from 'cause I don't know where you've been. But it really doesn't matter. Grab a chair and fill your platter. And dig, dig, dig right in. If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake. Hired a band, goodness sake. If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake.' A World Snooker tournament comes to the Rock for the first time in December at Gibraltar's Tercentenary Sports Hall, the fifth tournament in the 2015-16 Kreativ Dental Clinic European Tour. “We are delighted to stage a professional tournament in Gibraltar for the first time," said World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn. “We’re excited about the new Gibraltar Open - it’s the perfect chance for fans in the area to see the world’s leading stars.” The event is one of six qualifiers with the top 24 players qualifying for the Players Championship in March. Higgins, who suffered from throat cancer, was found dead in his flat in Belfast in 2010. Higgins had visited Spain to undergo dental surgery to get new teeth after he lost them during cancer treatment after fellow professionals raised £20,000. Higgins, weighing just seven stone, was regarded as not fit enough to have surgery, said to be too frail to have an operation by the medical profession in Spain. If Higgins, who died aged 61, could have been in Gibraltar in December that would have been the icing on the cake!

‘Repay or go to jail’, British benefit fraudster told

Suspended prison sentence for expat who failed to update benefits office Vivienne Day, 70, from Basildon in Essex claimed housing benefit, council tax benefit, Disability Living Allowance and Pension Credit for eight years - yet failed to let her UK benefit office know she was actually living in Mazarrón, Murcia. In total she falsely claimed over £41,000. But thanks to close working between the Department for Work and Pensions - which has a team of investigators based here in Spain - and the Spanish authorities, the truth surrounding her country of residence has been exposed and justice served. Not only did she fail to notify the DWP that she had moved abroad but she also hid from officials her ownership of a Spanish property and savings of £127,000. Investigators say one of the most common forms of benefit fraud among expats is failure to update their benefit office on changes of circumstance, such as moving abroad. They warn that such changes, if not reported, will in due course be detected and pursued. Day was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to repay within three months the full £41,000 she falsely claimed, plus £4,098 costs, or face a nine month stint in prison.

Local councillor Stuart Sullivan said, ‘This is a remarkable case both in the scale of fraud and the fact it went on for eight years. Basildon Council takes these cases very seriously and, as this case highlights, we will vigorously pursue those who commit these crimes and seek a full refund of money claimed as well as court costs. I hope the severity of the sentence will act as a deterrent to others.’ Vivienne Day pleaded guilty to three offences of

dishonestly making a false statement or representation and failing to notify a change in circumstances contrary to the Social Security Administration Act 1992. As a result she was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years with six months Supervision Order. She was subject to a restraint order on her bank accounts under the Proceeds of Crime Act and therefore a Confiscation Order was granted. The court ordered that the monies were to be paid directly from her bank accounts to Basildon Council within three months, otherwise she will be sent to prison for nine months in default of payment. She was also ordered to pay £4,098 costs. If you receive a UK benefit you must let your UK benefit office know if you travel or move abroad. If you don’t, you could be committing benefit fraud. You can find out more about what changes you need to tell the DWP about at www.gov.uk/report-benefits-changecircumstances. If you suspect someone of committing benefit fraud in Spain, call the Benefit Fraud Hotline on 900 55 444 0. Calls are free and confidential. Or you can report a benefit thief online at www.gov.uk/report-benefit-fraud. You can help make sure that benefits go to those that need them most.

Sean Connery's wife charged with Spanish property tax fraud Sean Connery’s wife has been charged with taking part in an alleged plot to defraud the Spanish treasury of millions of euros in property taxes. If convicted, Micheline Roquebrune, 86, could face a fine of up to £16m and a jail term of up to two and a half years. An indictment released by the Marbella state prosecutor shows Roquebrune is accused of taking part in a tax fraud after an investigation uncovered apparent irregularities surrounding the sale in 1998 of Malibu, the couple’s property in Marbella, for €6.4m (£5.6m). Connery, 85, best known for his James Bond roles, was cleared at the beginning of last year by the long-running investigation, which Spanish officials named Operation Goldfinger. But prosecutors allege that Roquebrune conspired with lawyers and businessmen to hide profits from the sale. She denies the allegations.

Connery and his wife owned Malibu for several decades before reportedly selling it for €6.4m (£5.6m). The property was subsequently demolished and 73 luxury flats built on the site, despite the local authority giving planning permission for only five family homes. The flats allegedly yielded a €53m (£37m) profit. The prosecution states that Roquebrune was connected to a Spanish company involved in the scheme, called By the Sea, and that together they aided and abetted an operation to

defraud the Spanish treasury of nearly £5.5m. It is claimed that she collaborated with lawyers and businessmen to formalise “fictitious legal transactions” that hid the profits related to the sale. A letter will now be sent to Roquebrune in the Bahamas, where she and Connery live, informing her of the court’s decision and ordering her to

appoint a defence lawyer. The trial will take place at a criminal court in Málaga; the date is yet to be set. Sixteen more defendants are due to be tried next year on related charges, including tax fraud and taking bribes. Among those accused are Julián Muñoz, a former mayor of Marbella, and Juan Antonio Roca, the resort’s former chief planner, who are already in jail for corruption. Last year the investigating magistrate, Alfredo Mondeja, criticised Connery and Roquebrune for actions that he said had delayed the investigation. He cleared Connery only after the threat of an international arrest warrant forced the actor to submit a 56page affidavit denying wrongdoing. Connery’s affidavit came two

and a half years after it was requested and three and a half years after he and Roquebrune failed to appear in court in Marbella, where they had been summoned to testify in the case. Mondeja said at the time: “Although the delays may have harmed the progress of the case, it’s also true that if the suspects had observed the proper rules of conduct, namely a minimum level of cooperation with the judicial authorities, the fate of those suspects would have been clarified more than two years ago.” Operation Goldfinger was a spin-off from the far larger Operation Malaya investigation into corruption in Marbella. It led to about 50 people being convicted for charges including bribery, property fraud and money laundering.

Brit spared jail after killing expat for taking photos of his young child The 39-year-old property developer was sentenced in Algeciras court after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of Sandro Rottman at a restaurant in Sotogrande last February. Rottman, 43, died after being punched in the head by Kainth who flew into a rage on discovering that his young daughter was being secretly filmed. It was reported that the German had been arrested only a few days earlier for possession of child pornography. "The girl's father got up and went to the table where the victim was," a source in the Civil Guard police force in the city of Algeciras told AFP at the time. "He took the tablet off him, saw that there were recordings of his daughter, and that was when the attack took place." Kainth was jailed for six months at a short

hearing at Algeciras Criminal Court, Spain, after state prosecutors agreed to a deal with his lawyer. Judge Raquel Gomez Sancho, a magistrate at Algeciras Criminal Court Number Two ruled that Rottman’s alcohol-related health problems, including severe liver cirrhosis, had contributed to his death. She also accepted as a mitigating factor that Kainth had attacked Rottman after being thrown into an emotional state after seeing images of his daughter on the victim’s iPad.

1-year ban for taking a swing at linesman with his penis In a recent hearing, the disciplinary committee decided to punish the player with "a one-year suspension of his federation licence, as well as a 468-euro fine" for "performing a public act of common knowledge which was completely undignified and disrespectful to the assistant

referee and the crowd present at the game". The committee took into account the "social impact and significance of the act and its notorious and blatant nature" as criteria to impose a "mediumlevel" punishment, according to the minutes of the meeting which were seen by EFE. The decision ended up being taken by the RFAF Competition Committee after they received the file from the local office in Granada, because the player belonged to the Granada-based outfit Céltic de Pulianas, who play in the Andalusian First Division. Céltic were not disciplined over the incident because they immediately expelled the player from their ranks.

Spanish postman held for hoarding undelivered mail for over a decade The 42-year-old man, who has not been named, was arrested after police discovered a stash of thousands of letters stolen over a period of ten years. The ex-postman has been charged with violation of trust as a custodian of private documents and breach of confidentiality for his stealing spree, which began in 2004 and lasted until 2014. Spanish police launched an investigation when they learned that a man had accumulated thousands of letters in his house in Alcoy, near Alicante. They discovered that the owner was a former employee of the Spanish postal service, who worked for the local post office in the town of Ontinyent, Valencia. Police found 3,200 letters in the postman’s possession, which included over 1,000 from the regional Valencian government, 162 missed delivery notes, driving licenses, court notices, energy bills, bank letters, personal letters and

magazines. After examining the correspondence, police saw that the ex-postman had been stealing letters during a ten year period, from 2004 until 2014. He was fired in 2014 when the post office noticed "irregularities" in his delivery methods, according to a statement issued by Spain's National Police. The postman worked an area along Spain’s popular Costa Blanca which included the towns of Ibi, Alcoy, Muro de Alcoy, Cocentaina and Ontinyent, as well as the city of Alicante.

Spanish Police Arrest Two Jihadi Recruiters And A Radicalised Spanish Woman In Catalonia

The Spanish Home office said in a statement on Saturday morning that the Civil Guard in Catalonia had arrested three people in relation to Islamic State terror activities. Two Moroccan men, aged 32 and 42, were arrested in Barcelona on suspicion of "promoting Islamic State ideology on the Internet". A 24-year-old Spanish woman was arrested in Granollers (Catalonia) after she "meant to join extremist terrorists groups on an upcoming trip". "The two men, aged 32 and 42, born in Tangiers (Morocco), lived in the same house in Barcelona, the city in which they have been arrested and from where they promoted, via different virtual platforms and social networks, the extremist ideological programme of DAESH and recruited followers to send them to

conflict zones." The young Spanish woman "had gone through a radicalisation process that had led her to share the extremist terrorist groups' strategy, which she meant to join in an upcoming trip, completely". The arrests were made on the orders of Investigating High Court Nº6 in Madrid and the public prosecutor. The Home Office statement said the investigation was continuing "to try to completely clarify the structure of the network", one of whose aims was "to recruit women for different roles in the terror organisation". The latest data from the Real Instituto Elcano show that 30% of jihadis arrested on terror offences are detained in the province of Barcelona, an area the think tank considers "the main jihadist focal point in Spain".

Pamplona becomes 1st Spanish city to seek probe of Dictator Franco's alleged crimes

The restaurant Coque in Madrid and Fernando Arellano’s Zaranda on the island of Mallorca have both been awarded a second Michelin star for their cuisine. And fourteen new restaurants across Spain have earned a place in the gastronomic bible after being award their first Michelin stars each under a ‘strategy of diversification’. But the 2016 guide for Spain and Portugal will not include any new three Michelin starred establishments as, for the second year running, no new restaurants in Spain achieved the highest award. But neither have any of Spain’s eight restaurants with three stars been downgraded, although nine restaurants in total were stripped of their stars and three others had closed down during the course of the year. Spain now has 188 restaurants included in the guide; eight with three stars, 23 with two stars and 157 with one Michelin star. The new guide was announced in

Santiago de Compostella in Spain's northwestern region of Galicia on Wednesday night. New one Michelin-starred restaurants in Spain Kabuki Raw (Casares, Málaga) Sollo (Fuengirola, Málaga) Messina (Marbella) Acanthum (Huelva) Disfrutar (Barcelona) Hoja Santa (Barcelona) Tresmacarrons (El Masnou, Barcelona) Emporium (Castelló d'Empúries, Girona) El Ermitaño (Benavente, Zamora) Villena (Segovia) El Rincón de Juan Carlos (Los Gigantes, Tenerife) Zarate (Bilbao) Lúa (Madrid) Casa Marcelo (Santiago de Compostela) New two Michelin-starred restaurants in Spain Coque (Humanes, Madrid) Zaranda (Es Capdellà, Mallorca)

Local politicians in Pamplona on Friday called for an investigation into crimes allegedly committed against residents by the dictatorship of the late Gen. Francisco Franco, turning the northern city into Spain's first known to seek such a probe. The resolution they adopted urges the city government to file a criminal case in Pamplona's courts, which would then decide whether to begin an investigation. Spain has never officially investigated alleged crimes committed under the rule of Franco, whose troops rose up against the republican Spanish government in 1936 to start the Spanish Civil War. About 300 Pamplona residents were killed at the outbreak of the war, the resolution said, which ushered in some 40 years of dictatorship. Civic groups say some 130,000 people killed in Spain under Franco are still unaccounted for.

A statement from groups that pushed for the resolution said Pamplona was the first city to do so and that efforts are under way promoting similar moves in additional Spanish cities and towns. Calls for criminal investigations into the alleged atrocities by Franco's regime have faced opposition in Spain because possible probes are seen by some as opening old wounds and as contradicting an amnesty passed two years after Franco's death in 1975. Pamplona is the capital of the Navarra region and is governed by a coalition of leftist and nationalist parties led by Bildu, which wants independence from Spain for Navarra and the neighbouring Basque region. Famed former Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzon launched a probe into the dictatorship's alleged crimes in 2008. It stopped when Garzon was barred from the bench in 2012 for overstepping his jurisdiction in a different case.

Old School Days at Reflections It was a fun night for all at Reflections last week for their Old School Disco. The fundraising event for the Cucaracha Film Club team had everyone reliving their youth, with some back a few more years than others, dressing up for the occasion, with the majority taking St. Trinian's as their inspiration. Along with the music and games, school boys and girls also were transported back to their past with a fun School Lunch, finishing up nicely with Bread pudding and Custard or Apple Crumble, to make the evening complete. Spinning the discs was local TKO presenter Keith Nicol, with sounds of the 50's through the sexy sixties to the glam and punk rock of the seventies plus a little disco, Motown and new romantics thrown in for good measure. Meanwhile headmistress Julie kept everyone busy with Hula Hooping, Hop Scotch, twisting and other fun games.

Their next fundraising event has a very adult theme, as it's Ladies Night on Thursday December 3rd, at Reflections. Entertaining the ladies will be none other than 'Scorpion' while Keith will be back scratching those discs and maybe even playing a little 'Ladies night'. For tickets, which includes the show and dinner, please visit

Reflections, on San Luis Lakeside, Torrevieja, or call Julie: 603 344 717 or 688 387 490. Julie said: “Need cheering up? Looking for a prechristmas treat? Night out with the girls? Look no further. Join us at Reflection's bar/restaurant (near the Christmas Shop, San Luis Lakeside) on Thursday 3rd of December for a fun night out. Strictly ladies only. 12.50€ will get you a glass of cava on arrival, a delicious buffet and a good laugh. Our resident host Chris will be inventing some new cocktails especially for this evening. Entertainment from the lovely Scorpion: a disco with Keith Nicol and a raffle in aid of local charities completes the line-up. You can also pick up one of our Cucaracha Club limited edition calendars, which will spice up your partner's year for just 5.00€.What are you waiting for. See you there.”

Back Stage Taking a break from the normal Back Stage Interview this week we take a look at what is involved in being a performer. There is an old much used joke among musicians that runs along the lines of who spends five thousand on a PA system, 20 or more years training and 20 hours per week practising, five hundred on a car, fifty euros on petrol to earn 100 for 5 hours work. The talented people who perform every week in bars, restaurants and other venues have all done this to a greater or lesser degree. Where does the five hours work come from? Travel to the

gig, setting the kit up, taking the kit down and travel back means that a 3 x 45 minute gig turns into 5 hours or more. In fact many performers will tell you that the whole day of the performance is affected in some way. They are in a state of limbo or maybe even anticipation. Let’s take a look at someone booked to do a show at 10pm. For a start, many will not partake of any alcohol even a beer or two at lunchtime knowing that it can make you feel tired and not only that – you will more than likely be driving. What time you eat becomes important to some and also

what you eat. Cliff Richard notably developed his trademark sideways head move to hide a burp whilst on stage singing; many learn to hide these unexpected sounds as they go. It’s not impossible to sing with a full stomach but it can impact your breathing as anyone will know if you think back to a stodgy Christmas dinner. Just imagine going for that power note with a belly full of food! That is just a couple of things that many acts have to consider before they even get to the gig. Acts never really stop practicing – whether that be using an instrument or vocals. There are always words to run through whilst waiting for the lights to go green or when doing the washing up, new guitar parts or riffs that did not go as well the last time they were played as you would wish. Learning new songs to keep things fresh. As we turn the heating up and head into Christmas – normally a busy time for all acts almost everywhere else in the world but here in Spain, you have to admire the stoic spirit of your local acts and musicians. For sure they will be praying that Santa brings them a new piece of kit, even a new guitar – just so they can come out next summer and entertain people. At Artists Direct-Spain we like to keep things simple, it’s simple for acts to join, simple to find acts and book them direct. Back Stage – well that is very different. There is lot of hard work, a lot of heartache and a lot of love…for the music, entertainment and for you the audience.

After Hours at MATRIX MADHOUSE

Tell us about yourselves I am Carla and I own and manage the Matrix Madhouse, along with my husband Mark. We have been here 18 months but have lived in Spain for 10 years. We have always been in the entertainment business and met 20 years ago when Mark auditioned as a guitarist for the band in which I was the lead singer. We are both music and drama teachers, have run a music shop and now we have the Madhouse. What made you open a bar/restaurant? Well the Madhouse is a bar, restaurant, recording studio, classroom and concert venue all rolled into one. We wanted somewhere where we could rehearse for

the shows that we put together and everything else just followed. All our staff find themselves drafted into our shows in some capacity. Of course some of them find this daunting at first but, so far, nobody has left because of it. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? Well I think ‘madhouse’ speaks for itself as there’s so much going on at any one time. Apart from the shows there are classes for dance, music and song…plus the fact we always say we are mad for doing it! Mark came up with ‘matrix’ as the basic definition of it is putting a lot of things together until you have found what you want. We have recently opened a restaurant, ‘Olliewoods’, on the

premises. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? Our head chef is Gordon Oliver and he loves a mix of modern and traditional styles. Our menus vary greatly depending on what’s happening at the Madhouse. Generally speaking if our customers ask for something particular they get it. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? I just love cheesy garlic mushrooms. Mark’s favourite is eggs benedict. Most places don’t seem to do it anymore. Favourite day of the week? We both say that if we had a day off that would be our favourite…but we never get one so I’ll go with Mondays as there’s so much going on, what with pantomime rehearsals and rock choir practices for both children and adults. Mark particularly likes Sundays as it’s our Sunday carvery, 12 until 6 at 6€ for a main course. He reckons there’s always a good buzz on that day.

Any interesting tales? Too many to mention. At the moment we have 2 baby pigeons that come in in tandem, have a good look round and then leave. A lady came in recently on a Sunday afternoon at about 4.30 and demanded cauliflower cheese with her meal. Unfortunately we had run out. There followed a full-blown tantrum in front of a packed restaurant. She then proceeded to eat every scrap on her plate and obviously enjoyed every mouthful. Afterwards she paid her bill and stormed out without another word, leaving us dumbfounded. If she reads this we now prepare double portions of everything to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We also recently performed a 22-minute version of ‘Frozen’ to an audience of four children….and 160 adults. Fortunately they loved it! You can find out what Matrix Madhouse Studio have going on at whatson-costablanca.com or you can book a table on 666 551 816

Alternative View - Just A Little Pin Prick By Heather Baggaley The word holistic can send some people into a frenetic spin – sounds foreign – after all if you have a headache you treat the ache don’t you? Reach for the aspirin? Why would you treat ‘all’ of you for a simple headache? That is really what holistic means and many alternative therapies do look at the whole picture about what is going on not only in your body but your mind too – the complete whole of you. So if you go to an acupuncturist expect to get asked a lot of questions before you even catch sight of a needle. Like most people, I really am a wuss when it comes to needles not helped by the fact that I used to faint at the sight of blood! The good news, should you decide to go to an acupuncturist is that there is neither the pain of a pin prick nor blood. Like many other alternative therapies, acupuncture has been practised for thousands of years, and at its very basic level acupuncturists believe that illness and or pain happen when the vital life force or energy, also known as Qi cannot flow freely and they aim to open the channels for the energy to flow freely again by inserting

fine needles in recognised acupuncture points. Acupuncture does not always use needles, massaging recognised pressure points and these days even lasers can also be used to achieve the same effect. Personally, whilst open minded, I am quite sceptical and do need a lot of convincing and I can tell you that one time in my life that I had acupuncture, it was pretty darn amazing. The actual session was not in the least painful, sometimes there was a small strange but bearable sensation as the acupuncturist ensured that she had the right location and I have to say that whilst generally speaking I am someone who does not relax easily and if you had asked me beforehand – I would never have expected to fall asleep on an uncomfortable therapy table with back pain and pins sticking in me but I did. The time just flew. I really did not want to wake up. When I had finished all of my sessions I can honestly say that I had seldom felt so good – full of energy, balanced. The back pain and the headaches were gone and a renewed sense of vigour and purpose replaced them. There is, as with all alternative therapies, debate about the success rates as well as the potential uses for acupuncture however generally people who attend alternative therapy clinics of whatever discipline are desperate – everything else has generally failed and they just want to feel better. You don’t have to believe or

Skin Quiz Is your skin showing signs of ageing? Do you have fine lines and wrinkles? Have you got brown spots and pigmentation? Do you have open pores and congested skin? If you answer yes to any of these questions then the latest skin treatment to hit the news might be just the answer for you. Dermafrac is a treatment that

uses a roller which contains 180 superfine heads to stimulate collagen production and cell renewal, helping to plump firm and smooth the skin. As the roller creates little microchannels in the skin, the Dermafrac system simultaneously enables an infusion of a potent serum to boost the impact of the treatment. Without discomfort and no downtime this skin

treatment will give you firmer, healthier looking skin. There are many skin treatments available these days and it is always best to book a consultation appointment and get the advice of your skin care specialist. It’s a minefield to know what is going to be the best treatment for you and I would always recommend this consultation first for a number of reasons. Firstly it lets you meet the person who will be carrying out your treatments and this is important, you must feel comfortable and confident that this is the best person for you. Secondly it allows you to hear what your choices might be and then gives you chance to go away and do some fact finding of your own should you wish. Thirdly it allows you to fit any course of treatment into your diary and finally it allows you to plan your budget for any treatments that you may decide to have. If you have any specific skin treatment questions please feel free to email us for confidential advice. Please title your enquiry NEWSPAPER as we get literally dozens of emails each day and don’t want to disappoint our readers. Simply18es@hotmail.com

even understand their chosen discipline to the depths that the therapist does – you just trust that they are going to perform their skills professionally. In the case of acupuncture that means using pre-packaged individual sterilised very fine needles. There are other less well known types of acupuncture such as moxibustion – the application of indirect heat using therapeutic herbs, electro – acupuncture, cupping, and guasha – the vigorous rubbing of the skin. All of them aim to restore the balance or Qi. Acupuncture is generally used and known for pain treatment but it can also be used in combination with other treatments with some osteopaths, physiotherapists and doctors incorporating it with more traditional methods. People often turn to acupuncture when they feel ‘out of sorts’ or bodily ‘unbalanced’ with no clear diagnosis and there are many that have regular treatment because they do find it so beneficial and relaxing. In my book anything that beats stress is well worth a second look. See ya soon

'Britain's first alien abduction victim' recalls encounter with 'diamond-shaped UFO' 35 years after incident A retired police officer who claims to be Britain’s first alien abduction will be keeping a close eye on the skies tomorrow - 35 years after his UFO encounter. Alan Godfrey, a former PC, says his close encounter with a UFO is still fresh in his mind as it was 35 years ago. He was on patrol in Todmorden, West Yorks, in the early hours of 28 November 1980 when he believes he was snatched from his police car. Under hypnosis, arranged by solicitor Harry Harris, he recalled seeing small beings and a tall man with a beard on the craft, who conducted medical tests on him. His encounter is regarded by researchers as the first alien abduction in the UK. Retired former police detective Gary Heseltine, who edits UFO Truth Magazine, said: "I researched Alan's case over an 18 month period, meeting with him on many occasions and becoming his friend. “He was a well-respected police officer amongst his colleagues who became involved in what is largely regarded as Britain's first documented 'Alien Abduction' case. “I'm one of the very few people who has seen every minute of his hypnotic regression videos. Based on all I know of this case I believe his account is genuine." Author and UFO expert Jenny Randles, from Rossendale, Lancs, said: “Alan's encounter is probably the most famous and the best regarded of all British UFO close encounters of the fourth kind outside the UK. "Whenever I have been in the US it is the only one the Americans seem to have heard about. “The week after I was invited to address the House of Lords UFO group in the Houses of Parliament and met many interested big wigs who were very eager to know

what the heck was going on. “In 1980 this was still something uncommon even in America so there was no X Files like mythology as today.” Alan was out hunting a herd of missing cows when he witnessed the ‘diamond shaped’ object hovering five foot off the ground. He tried to call for help but all he got was radio silence. He jotted down a sketch of the silent eerie craft which seemed to be rotating in his police notepad. Suddenly the object vanished and he was 30 yards further down the road. Alan said: “This was a solid craft, not a trick of the mind. I would swear on the Bible it was from somewhere else.” He drove back to the scene and discovered the road was dry despite it having rained. A bus travelling on the road stopped and the driver got out and noticed the same thing.

Alan returned to the local police station but couldn’t account for 15 minutes of what abduction researchers call ‘missing time’. At first he kept the encounter to himself, fearing he would be made a laughing stock. But he filed an official report when several other officers said they had also witnessed the UFO zooming across the local moors. A lorry driver also phoned in to say he saw the UFO buzzing Cliviger, near Burnley, Lancs. Police released the story to the local media and it was picked up by the Sunday Mirror. Journalist John Sheard said recently: “I’ve been a journalist for 50 years and covered quite a few strange stories, but the Alan Godfrey story is undoubtedly the most astonishing thing I ever covered.” Oldham-born Alan believes his superiors tried to get him sectioned following his close encounter and said he was banned from Todmorden Police Station. He is now retired but still lives in the area. He said: “It doesn’t seem that long ago. It’s as fresh in my mind as it was at the time.” Last year, Alan gave a sell-out talk for the Mayor of Todmorden’s charities raising £2,500. Former mayor Michael Gill said: "I've known Alan for many years. He is a very straight speaking, genuine man. I don't doubt he experienced what he says. "He has no conscious memory of the things that came out under hypnosis and openly admits he has no idea if they happened or not. "He does however clearly remember the nuts and bolts craft. He has often said 'That craft was there. If I had thrown a brick at it, it would have gone bang!'"

Giant 33ft squid caught Model Inmates Compete For Title Of Prison Beauty Queen off coast of Spain

You'd be forgiven for thinking these images have come straight from a Sci-Fi film. But these are pictures of a real giant squid, caught by fisherman off the coast of Spain. The beast measured 33 foot and weighed in at a staggering 330lbs. Believed to be a female, the squid was caught in the nets the fishermen were trawling at a depth of almost 500m. Speaking of their surprising monster catch, one of the fishing boat crew said: "To see a specimen of this size can intimidate anybody, even those who fish every day and have spent a lifetime at sea." The animal has now been frozen and sent to experts to experts at The Study and Protection of Marine Species in Northern Spain. The president of the organisation said of their new arrival: "It is an extraordinary example, one of the biggest we have seen in the last few years."

The intimidating creatures can grow to impressive sizes but recent estimates but the maximum size at 43 feet for a female and 33 feet for males. Reports of creatures as big 66 feet circulate amongst seasoned fisherman but have never been scientifically verified. Until recently, little was known about the creature believed to be the real face of the mythical kraken, a sea-monster blamed by sailors for sinking ships off Norway in the 18th century. But in 2013, scientists managed to film one of the mysterious creatures in their natural habitat for the first time. The world's first live images of the elusive animal showed it in the depths of the Pacific Ocean near the Ogasawara islands, 1000km south of Japan. In the footage the invertebrate, which has huge black eyes, can be seen holding a bait squid in its tentacles as it swims against the current at a depth of 900 metres.

A woman serving a 39 year sentence for robbery has been crowned the beauty queen of one of Brazil's toughest prison for females. Michelle Neri Rangel, 27, beat nine other inmates to the "Miss Talavera Bruce 2016" title at the maximum security lockup of the same name in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Tuesday. She was ordered detained at the facility in 2010 after being convicted of prostitution and a series of holdups. "(This competition) is a question of honour. I'm feeling like a woman, I've learned how to feel like a woman in prison," The participants had their hair and make-up styled by local volunteers. Armed guards, family, friends and ten judges looked on as they first donned swimwear and then evening gowns for the two sections of the competition. Ana Carolina Rosa de Souza, 22, won last year's event, and said it had served to

"open doors" and make her a better person. She had been convicted for drug trafficking. "The competition is not just about beauty. The judges are looking for the ability to express sympathy," The annual event is organized by community and church groups who want to boost inmates' self-esteem, and this year was hosted by Brazilian model and actress Carol Nakamura. The Talavera Bruce prison is inside the Bangu penitentiary complex, which is composed of 17 penal units. The number of imprisoned females in Brazil rose 567 percent from 2000 to 2014, its Ministry of Justice revealed recently. Overall, the country's overcrowded prison population is now the world's fourth largest, with more than 600,000 inmates being held in facilities designed for 377,000, according to Human Rights Watch.

Sunbeam Alpine: the first Bond car The Aston Martin DB10 in SPECTRE was built especially for the movie, but there was a time when the James Bond producers had to pay for cars. One of the most fascinating exhibits at the Bond in Motion display at the London Film Museum in Covent Garden is not a car but an internal memo sent to a member of the EON production team regarding the daily fee for the hire of a 1961 Sunbeam Alpine Series II. Whenever 007’s cars history is discussed, his transport in the first movie, Dr No, is often forgotten, yet it could be argued that it is as important to the franchise as any Aston Martin. Styled by the famous Loewy Studios and sold by the Rootes Group, the Alpine offers US design tropes on a British scale, while the prominent tail fins sported by the pre-1964 cars lend the design a rather jaunty air. The Alpine was a not implausible choice of transport for James Bond (in the novel he favours a Hillman Minx), and although it may have lacked the performance of a DB5, the 1.6-litre, twin-carburettor engine was potent enough for Jack Brabham and Stirling Moss. It also had more than enough power to outrun a 1939 La Salle Funeral Coach that magically transforms into a Humber Super Snipe when it plummets down a ravine, and Dr No remains a rare Bond film in that 007 has to rely on his driving skills rather than Q’s gadgetry. Some of the chase sequence was shot in the studio, accompanied by much dramatic wheel-twirling on the

part of Sean Connery, but according to Shane Angus of the Jamaica Classic Car Club, the main car is believed to still be on the island, albeit in need of restoration. Best of all, the Alpine looked splendid; both the Rootes Group and the people who made the first Bond movie were skilful at giving the illusion of glamour despite having limited resources. The Jamaican footage for Dr No was augmented with a good deal of work at Pinewood: the leading lady’s voice was dubbed by another actress, and the design genius of Ken Adams masked the fact that the budget was not terribly high even by 1962 standards. Similarly, the appearance of the Sunbeam, described

by copywriters as being "Swift… sleek…spectacular” effectively disguised the fact that it was based on the floorplan of a Hillman Husky, a Minx-based estate car that remains one of the least charismatic vehicles in British automotive history. To audiences the Sunbeam also had the merit of being an accessible form of glamour. While not exactly cheap at £1,110, it was still within reach of many cinema patrons in 1962. An easy payment scheme, plus a modest sum for the optional wire wheels with whitewall tyres, could make a chartered ship broker in Southampton a secret agent by proxy. These days, when Dr No resurfaces on afternoon television, the cars in the background have a fascination of their own, from the Standard Ensign taxis and police Ford Consul Mk2s to the Vauxhall PA Velox favoured by the wonderfully seedy Professor Dent. The automotive continuity does go awry on occasions; Bel Airs with Ford Fairlane dashboards and Impalas changing model in mid-journey, for example. However, perhaps the most surprising thing that watching Dr No afresh reveals is that it wasn’t Roger Moore who introduced the art of eyebrow acting to the Bond franchise, but Sean Connery as he wrestles with the wheel of the Sunbeam in his attempts to avoid the deadly back-projection. Both actor and car are perfectly cast.

BMW launches radical online ordering system BMW is promising that customers will be able to buy a new car online in only 10 minutes, after announcing that the UK will be the first market globally to get the company’s next generation of internet retailing. Introduced with the co-operation of 137 dealers in the BMW UK network, the

new system combines BMW’s existing configurator and ‘car suggestion tool’ with online Genius chat operators and a tie-in with used car valuations specialist Glass’s. Nine dealers have piloted the system in the UK, selling around 50 cars. Car manufacturers have been experimenting with increasingly diverse

ways of interacting with their customers including more retail-focused experiences at shopping centres and ‘virtual showrooms’ that don’t feature any vehicles. BMW believes it is the first to offer the full ordering and finance process as part of the system, though. The company’s global boss of sales and marketing Ian Robertson said: “Ten years ago the customer went to the dealership an average of 4.5 times before buying the car; now it’s 1.5 times. So we already know there’s an enormous amount of research being done online - more than 90% of buyers do preparation there before going anywhere near a showroom.” He admitted the new experience was a challenge to BMW’s existing sales network. “There was clear nervousness to start with,” he said, “but during the pilot the dealers have been seeing customers they’ve never seen before, and sold cars in the middle of the night. It was enough to persuade 137 dealers in the UK to sign up to it. We have to reflect the fact that the sales process is becoming more transactional than experiential.” At present the system is exclusively for BMW vehicles. However, high-level sources admit that a roll-out to the Mini brand is likely.

Six steps - how BMW's E-Tailer works 1. The system asks questions about your needs - typical journey, number of family members etc. - and then suggests a few possible choices from the 280 models in the BMW range. 2. Configure a car from scratch or adapt the model suggested by the system. ‘Genius’ advisors are online to offer any advice between 8am and 10pm, seven days a week. 3. Check the delivery time of the car and spec you want - and see if nearmatches to it are available more quickly. 4. Choose the dealer you want to handle your sale - and then open a dialogue with them. BMW says that you can ‘haggle’ at this point. 5. If you’ve got a car to trade in, you give its registration plate and mileage and the system gives you a rough idea of what it’s worth. You can then feed this figure into the system for the final step. 6. Payment and ordering. Use of a finance calculator allows you to play with annual mileage, monthly payments, deposit and the length of term. You can also apply for finance; an answer takes 90 seconds, BMW claims. You can pay your deposit using a credit card or bank transfer - and the system informs you that the car will be delivered to your home.

Fiat 124 Spider revealed ahead of 2016 UK launch The new 124 Spider roadster was unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show this month, almost haft a century after the original 124 Spider made its debut in 1966. The 124 Spider is the product of a joint venture between Fiat and Mazda and shares the rear-wheel drive platform of the fourth generation MX-5 that went on sale earlier this year. There will be no sharing of powertrains, however – the Fiat variant will use the brand’s 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo petrol unit, which with 140PS loses 20 horsepower to the MX-5’s 2-litre SkyActive petrol engine, but offers better torque, 240NM compared to the 200NM of the MX-5. Fiat has not revealed any performance figures for the 124 Spider, but it is believed that thanks to modern construction techniques with much aluminium in the bodyshell, the car weighs around the same as the lesspowerful 1.5-litre Mazda, and should therefore be able to match the performance of its Japanese rival. There is also a 160PS engine planned

for the 124 in America, but no indications yet as to whether this unit will be offered in Europe. The Spider will be sold with a manually-operated soft-top, like its Japanese rival. Fiat says that springassisted opening and closing negates the need to power the hood and even the seats have been designed to ease opening and closing while in the car. Prices will be announced closer to its launch date but are expected to be more than the £18,495 entry cost of the MX-5. Fiat has worked hard to produce a car that will rival the MX-5 for visual appeal while also recalling the original 124 Spider. The twin bonnet power domes, horizontal body creases with kick-ups over the rear and horizontal tail lamps are all direct references to the 1966 car.

Amazon Kindle Voyage review Perhaps it will come as no surprise to hear that the newest and most expensive Kindle from Amazon is its best ever. But it really is. The price tag could be sticking point, however. At £170, the top-of-the range Kindle Voyage is the most expensive eBook reader Amazon has developed yet, but with similarly remarkable electronic ink tech available at a remarkably affordable price in the form of the £60 Kindle, has Amazon undercut itself? Screen The screen on the Kindle Voyage was made for those mammoth reading sessions in which night or day, no matter how fatigued, you just can't put a book down. Its 300 pixels per inch display is very high resolution for a device of this type and therefore very kind on your eyes. To stop you from squinting in the darkness, the Kindle will automatically adjust to new lighting situations so, as time goes by, will get lighter or darker as your eyes start to adjust to the changed visibility conditions. This is almost imperceptible, in the way of discreet five-star hotel service -- you feel comfortable and taken care of, and yet there have been no interruptions to your private time. Squeeze me As well as the actual device being the thinnest and lightest Kindle ever, the Voyage has some other tricks up its sleeves that we haven't seen on previous models. Running down each vertical bezel is a line and a dot. Squeeze the line and the page will flick forwards and squeeze the dot and the page flicks back one. This obviously makes it ideal for lefties and means that most of the time you don't even need to lift a finger to turn the page (just shift your thumb a bit instead). The Voyage provides noiseless haptic feedback that you can only feel in your thumb. Over time it becomes more

sensitive -- Voyage newbies tend to squeeze harder out of excitement. It's a boon and a novelty and perfect for those lazy days on a sun lounger when you're lying on one side holding the Kindle up to help shield your eyes from the sun as you read (just don't try and balance it on your face if you decide to have a nap). But it is also to an extent a

luxury. Touching the screen to turn the page is not all that more difficult than squeezing the bezel -- not £110 more difficult at any rate. It should be mentioned that there are some great features on-board the Kindle, including expanded XRay -- which lets you look at the "bare bones" of the book -- and a smart lookup tool that integrates X-Ray, dictionary and Wikipedia information about the book in one place. On their way are other features -enhanced search, family libraries and Word Wise to help you understand more complex books. All great, but these features are also all available on the £60 Kindle. The Voyage's main competition aside from Amazon's other products is the Nook Glow -- a lovely, light eBook reader with similar light-emitting technology to the Paperwhite and a 6-inch screen that costs only £90. Of course this locks you out of Amazon's eBook ecosystem, but if you've yet to invest in a device that is not necessarily a problem. Conclusion Amazon revolutionised the hardware people used for reading for the mass market in a way the human race hadn't seen for centuries, but innovating such a low-tech activity comes at a price. As it always has done, the luxury of reading lies in the content itself rather than the more disposable vehicle that delivers it. The Kindle Voyage is a fabulous device that we wouldn't hesitate to endorse, but ultimately we couldn't recommend to someone that they should pay to upgrade from a recent older model. Similarly, if you're debating between the cheaper and more expensive Kindles, you are probably better off going for the £60 device and spending the change on stocking up your eBook library. The exceptions to this are if you have no choice but to read in the dark, or if your name is Moneybags -- in which case, go wild and enjoy.

Quesada Golf Society Last Wednesday members of the society played at the course on their doorstep: La Marquesa. With a late first tee-time members had plenty of time to prepare themselves for the game. The course was in reasonable condition with the greens being firm and generally quick. When play commenced the sun was out although as the day progressed the wind got stronger with the final hole, the monster par 5 playing more like a par 7 with the wind blowing into your face. 25 players, in 2 divisions, contested an individual Stableford competition. The winner of the Gold Division with 33 points was Roy “Hopalong Cassidy” Kavanagh, who despite suffering a bout of sciatica triumphed in adversity. In second place on 29 points was “Diddy” Dave Winchcombe and in third place on C/B with 28 points was the colourful Jon Daly-like Ron Perkins. The winner of the Silver division was “smokin” Tony Patterson with 26 points. Tony has struggled of late but played very well on the day and would have had a score in the 30´s had he not run out of steam towards the end. In second place with 25 points

was ex-firefighter and Yorkshireman Graham Butterworth who pipped third placed Sheila McSweeney on C/B. The Best Guest, there was only one, was Dave Gordon who returned the second best score of the day with a very creditable 30 points. The winners of the “Nearest the Pins” were Terry “Tel”

Rogers, Dave Gordon, Graham Burtterworth, Big John Featherstone and Tony Patterson. It was also the final round of the Annual Eclectic competition but we will have to wait for the final results as JD has to check the cards and work out the final scores. Last but not least it was also the final of the annual Singles knock-out competition which was contested between 2 superheavyweights, Manc John and Scouse Roy. They both went into the game with injuries but Roy appeared to overcome his and was the “golfer of the day” winning the final 4 and 2 and also returned the best stableford score of the day. Roy, Terry Rogers and Brian Smith got 2´s and shared the 2´s pot but won´t be leaving the country. Might get as far as AP7 but that's about it. After the game the players returned to the Quesada Country Club for a drink or two and a hot & cold buffet kindly laid on. The next game is on Wednesday 9 December at the course with the island green on the 18th, Lo Romero. Before this game there is a members meeting at the Quesada Country Club, today, Tuesday 1st December starting at 10.30am and the annual Society Christmas dinner and presentations evening on Thursday 3rd December at the Quesada Country Club. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966 716 723. Memberships run from January to December.

Alicante Golf 24th November 2015 Our 6th visit of the year to this delightful course and it was in excellent condition and there was a lot of TLC going on. The greens were a tad on the quick side but they did not deter our talented members. This was a Stableford competition and there was some steady scoring but the best of the day was from big Ron Chambers with 36 points, who had a quite illustrious day bagging an Albatross on the 2nd Hole for a Nett 1, and a Duck on the 13th as Ron’s errant shot struck it after ricocheting into the water. And I thought a Duck was only in cricket or a deliberate action! Results: Gold Category: 1st Ron Chambers, 2nd Ron Swift, 3rd Ivie Davies. Silver Category: 1st Ken Hopkins: 2nd Billy Wilks, 3rd Barney Hickey. Nearest Pins: Hole 3: Malcolm Anderson: Hole 6: Andy Stenning: Hole 8: Ron Chambers:

Sporting Saladar By Andrew Atkinson Almoradi based Football Club Sporting Saladar is faring well in the 2015-16 campaign in the 1st Segunda Regional Grupo League under new coach Juanpe. Juanpe joined Club Sporting Saladar after his shock exit at Alicante based club CD Montesinos FC at the end of last season, where he had been coach for seven years. Juanpe lured Vazquinho to Club Sporting Saladar from CD Montesinos FC in the summer, which has paid dividends in the first quarter of the season. Brazilian striker 'Vaz' has continued to score goals in the Segunda Regional Grupo 1st Regional League at Club Sporting Saladar since his arrival, having been CD Montesinos' top goalscorer and former Player of the Year at the Los Montesinos based club. Club Sporting Saladar defeated Bigastro CF 31 in a recent 1st Regional League game

with Vazquinho and Alberto scoring the goals in a well-earned victory. "I have settled in well at Club Sporting Saladar and have scored a few goals hopefully that will continue," Vazquinho told me. Vazquinho and Juanpe were spectators at San Miguel on Sunday (November 22) watching their former club in action in a 2nd Regional game, which San Miguel defeated CDM 3-0. Both Vazquinho and Juanpe shook hands with members of the 'Full Monte' Supporters Club, whom the ex-coach held in high esteem. "The CD Montesinos 'Full Monte' Supporters Club always gave me great support during my time at the club," said Juanpe. CD Montesinos FC are one of the best supported non-league clubs in the lower echelons of Spanish football, with crowds of between 300-400 at home games.

Hole 12: Rodney Smith: Hole 15: Andy Stenning: Hole 17: Dave Guerrine. Longest Drive: Ron Swift. Best Guest: Hugh Riley. So it was back to St. James’s Gate for the celebrated meal, this time Goulash and Mashed Potatoes thank you Martin and your good lady for your hospitality. The next game is at Vistabella on Tuesday 8th December the First Tee 9:30am. This is the last game of the year and the presentations will take place at the Christmas Dinner on Thursday 10th, 7:30pm for 8:00pm at St. James’s Gate. Not to be missed as it is always a good night. But all are welcome to go back as normal to St. James’s Gate after the game. Torrevieja's valuable win After looking down and losing the last two games, CD Torrevieja bounced back in style with a 3.1 win on the road, on Saturday. What difference a week made, with the Torry team coming out and this time not only firing on all cylinders but scoring much needed goals for a change against a Paterna team who were not quite sure what hit them. This was the first official meeting between the two clubs who although they are based in Albal they play in Sedav铆. They entered the division last season under the name Club Deportivo Col贸n before changing to Club de F煤tbol Recambios Col贸n Valencia. Because of an injury that prevented him from playing in this game, Vicente Boix didn't play on Saturday, being the only torrevejense player to have played

every minute of the championship. Neither of the teams fielded a substitute goalkeeper, with the victory giving Torrevieja their first on the road victory, and fourth overall, in this championship. CD Torrevieja's next home game is against UD Rayo Ibense, in the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Sunday December 13th, 2015 at 5.00pm. This is the only home game during December with the next home game being in the New Year after the Christmas break. For the moment the team are playing just beside the Vicente Garcia Stadium on the artificial grass of the Nelson Mandela, while the pitch is reseeded in the Vicente Garcia. More details on the club's Facebook page, from the Torry Army supports club at: www.fctorrevieja.net or www.clubdeportivotorrevieja.com.

Presidente to meet players as CD Montesinos rocked by bottom club San Isidro By Andrew Atkinson Cd Montesinos 2-2 San Isidro CD Montesinos were left shell-shocked by bottom club San Isidro in a 2-2 draw at the Municipal Stadium in the Segunda Regional Grupo 15. After the 3-0 defeat against Racing San Miguel last week, CD Montesinos coach Roberto was looking for a reaction from his players - against a team that had conceded 41 goals going into the game. The result has left management looking for a resolution, starting with a meeting with club Presidente Felipe and the players yesterday, Monday. A General Meeting today (Tuesday Nov 31) at Bar La Esquina, Los Montesinos, will look into an 'inquest' as to what has gone wrong in CD Montesinos last two outings. CD Montesinos were left to rue chances, after persistent pressure on the San Isidro goal saw the strikers fail to capitalise. Wallace, ORourke and Paredes were the culprits, after wasting chances in the opening 20 minutes. The breakthrough finally came on the half hour mark, when a direct free kick on the edge of the San Isidro penalty area was fired into the net by ORourke, to give CD Montesinos a 1-0 lead. San Isidro then rocked Montesinos and the home crowd, when they equalised on 32 minutes, from their first attack on goal, following a defensive mistake, to leave Lopez stranded. ORourke was then booked for dissent, after retaliating to a foul. HT 1-1. Three minutes into the second half CD Montesinos again had a chance to net, only for Carlos shooting well over the bar, with only the keeper to beat. CD Montesinos Coach Roberto made a double-substitution on 61 minutes, when taking off Wallace and Parades, being replaced by Manu and M&A. Two minutes after making the substitutions CD Montesinos were rocked again when San Isidro took a shock 2-1 lead, from only their second attempt on the home goal. With time running out, and the disillusioned fans'

frustrations telling, CD Montesinos levelled at 2-2 following a Fernando cross, which was met by Carlos to net. And in the dying seconds CD Montesinos almost snatched a victory, only for ORourke to agonisingly look on as the San Isidro keeper pulled off a brilliant save to thwart him. CD Montesinos dropped to seventh place in the table, with San Isidro still glued to the bottom of the division - despite taking an unexpected point. CD Montesinos team: Lopez; Macan; Fernando, Mario; Carlos; Manu; ORourke; Parades; J. Antonio; Wallace; Pley. Subs: Moises; J. Manu; Nico; Dario; M&A. Roberto Cases is confident that CD Montesinos FC can bounce back after the disappointing defeat to Racing San Miguel in the 2nd Regional Segunda Grupo League on November 22nd. "I am not worried," said new CD Montesinos FC coach Roberto, who replaced Juanpe at the Municipal Stadium at the end of last season. He spoke exclusively to the Coast Rider ahead of Sunday's drawn game against San Isidro. And Roberto believes the next three fixtures, can prove that the team are back on track. After the game against San Isidro, CD Montesinos face CD Almoradi 'B'; Todo Deporte; and

Dep. Orihuela, ahead of the Christmas and New Year break. Red cards: including one for Roberto himself and yellow card bookings have blighted the good start to the campaign, with just two defeats in 11 games. Striker Wallace was back in the squad against San Isidro, after serving a one match ban that led to him missing the 3-0 defeat at Racing San Miguel. Key player Dimitry missed CD Montesinos' game against San Isidro, after picking up five yellow cards. "It was good to get Wallace back against San Isidro, but disappointing to lose Dimitry, due to receiving five yellow cards," said Roberto. With a squad of 20 players, Roberto said: "With such a tight squad, small in numbers, matches like the one at San Miguel will happen. "As long as we react positively, all is okay." Elsewhere, league leaders CD Dolores defeated second placed CD Benijofar 1-0 in a top of the table clash to chalk up their tenth win of the season, to go four points clear. SS Fulgencio failed to capitalise on their chase to reduce the gap between league leaders CD Dolores and second spot CD Benijofar in the Segunda Regional Grupo 15 on Saturday. SS Fulgencio travel to CD Dolores this weekend (December 6th) in what is a mouth-watering fixture - with 60 plus goals netted between the clubs this season. Third placed SS Fulgencio could only manage a share of the spoils in a 1-1 home draw against tenth placed Dep. Orihuela, who remain in the lower half of the table. CD Almoradi 'B' defeated CD Borneo 3-1 away to jump above them into mid-table, it being their fourth win of the campaign, a result that whets the appetite as they host CD Montesinos on December 6th. Results: Saturday (Nov 28) CD Borneo 1-3 CD Almoradi B; SS Fulgencio 1-1 Dep. Orihuela. Sunday results (Nov 29): RP Orihuela 2-1 CD Murada; R. Orihuela 2-2 Todo Dep; CD Montesinos 2-2 San Isidro; CD Benijofar 0-1 CD Dolores; SP Orihuela 1-3 Racing San Miguel.

Football y Fútbol A record breaking week this week. Apart from Jamie Vardy taking the all time consecutive goal record for the Premiership to 13, away from the world of football, Tyson Fury is the new world heavyweight boxing champion, the Formula One season came to an end and after a wait of 79 years, Great Britain became the most unlikely of Davis Cup Champions, after almost being relegated a season or so back

Adama Traore

Cristiano Ronaldo

Meanwhile, in the press, apparently the Sun would have us believe that Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, 30, has given his word to Paris St-Germain that they are the only club for whom he would quit the Bernabeu. The Portugal international has been linked with a return to Manchester United. The Daily Express make mention of Diego Costa on their back page and The Daily Star leads on Chelsea striker Diego Costa's bib-throwing after not being brought on against Tottenham while former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, 68, could take charge at Newcastle United if Steve McClaren is sacked, but 42-year-old former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is favourite to get the job say the Daily Mirror. Newcastle are not expected to sack McClaren, 54, but owner Mike Ashley will turn to his football board and PR chief Keith Bishop for answers after the Magpies returned to the Premier League relegation zone. Arsenal are set to make an offer for Celta Vigo forward Nolito, but the 29-year-old would prefer a move to Barcelona and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has revealed he turned down several loan offers for forward Joel Campbell, 23, in the summer. Former Manchester United and Everton player Phil Neville, 38, could take temporary charge of Valencia after first-team coach Nuno Espirito Santo quit on Sunday. Neville was the 41-year-old's assistant manager. Serie A sides AC Milan, Inter, Juventus and Bologna are interested in Leicester City forward Andrej Kramaric, 24 and the Sun say that former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, 56, will take over at Bayern Munich should Pep Guardiola quit the German club at the end of the season to Andrej Kramaric

move to the Premier League. Barcelona do not have a clause allowing them to buy back winger Adama Traore, 19, who signed for Aston Villa for £7m in August. Everton manager Roberto Martinez says he would not swap striker Romelu Lukaku, 22, for Leicester forward Jamie Vardy, 28, who has broken the record for scoring in consecutive Premier League games. West Ham and Chelsea are both interested in Genoa midfielder Rolando Mandragora, 18, who is on loan at Serie B side Pescara and Manchester United are tracking Fiorentina's former West Brom midfielder Borja Valero, 30, and his 18-year-old teammate Breel Embolo. Atletico Madrid will seek a replacement for injured midfielder Tiago in January, with Monaco's Jeremy Toulalan, 32, top of their list. Watford forward Troy Deeney, 27, who scored against Aston Villa on Saturday, said he failed a trial at Villa Park as a youngster because he was "more interested in chasing girls". Brighton loan signing Rajiv van La Parra has no idea why he has fallen out of

favour at Wolves. The 24-year-old joined the Seagulls on Thursday. QPR plan to name their new manager this week from a shortlist of three - with Burton boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, 43, favourite for the job ahead of former Charlton and Huddersfield manager Chris Powell, 46, and Walsall's Dean Smith, 44. Bleacher Report's Matt Jones said: “Barcelona pair Lionel Messi and Neymar have been named on the final threeman shortlist for the 2015 Ballon d’Or, alongside the current holder, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. The contenders for the gong, which is awarded to the finest footballer on the planet, were whittled down from a 23-man list of nominations and confirmed via France Football on Monday: It means Blaugrana star Luis Suarez and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski will not be considered for the accolade despite excellent years. It’s the first time Neymar has been included in the final three, while Messi and Ronaldo will be seeking to be named as the world’s best by FIFA for the fifth and fourth time, respectively. Robert Lewandowski
