Daughters member honored for community service By Bianca Kaplanek

RANCHO SANTA FE — Martha McCarter said she was “honored and surprised” to receive the Community Service Award from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for serving more than 20 years as a member of the San Dieguito Planning Group. Joanne Murphy, regent of the De Anza chapter, recognized McCarter for her achievement Oct. 3 during the organization’s first meeting of 2009-2010 at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club. In nominating

McCarter, Murphy said her colleague worked “tirelessly and always with the community’s best interests in mind.” FOR

“Martha has a way of working with great enthusiasm, professionalism and appreciation of those working with her,” Murphy said. “Martha will bring honor to this award.” McCarter is a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution who served as a regent with the Los Angeles chapter before moving to San Diego in the early 1980s. But she received the award solely for her work with the San Dieguito Planning Group. She was a member from the mid-1980s until 2006

and was the organization’s representative to the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority since its inception in 1989. McCarter was instrumental in refurbishing the Sikes adobe farmhouse before it was destroyed in the 2007 fires. Because time spent as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution is not considered when selecting award recipients, Murphy said it is harder for its members to receive the award than other community members. “This is a well-deserved TURN TO PARK ON A23

There will be events for youngsters, book clubs and other events during the run of the show. For gallery hours, call (760) 436-1440. “Wow! How many hours did that take to make?” is often the initial response to text artist Cheryl Sorg’s huge, intricate works constructed from books, and the answer is hundreds. Sorg is a booklover, whose love of literature manifests itself in her art through an obsessive cut-and-paste process in which she takes a book (two copies of a book, actually, in order to get both sides of each page, and therefore the book in its entirety), dissembles it line by line and re-configures the text in readable order, with a mother lode of clear tape into a TURN TO SORG ON 17
