City makes it easy to remove wildfire fuel DEL MAR — The city of Del Mar Fire Department is coordinating with Coast Waste Management to host a Fuel Reduction Week in the first half of June. The city is looking to make it easier for area residents to clear away all potential wildfire fuel from their property. Residents can call Coast Waste Management at (800) 386-7783 during the week of May 31 to June 4 to schedule

delivery of a free bin for removal of all generated yard waste. Coast Waste Management will then deliver the bins between June 7 and June 11, on the regular pickup day. On the regular pickup day, one week later, Coast Waste Management will remove the bins for no cost. If residents have less than the equivalent of a pickup truck load of vegetation, they may leave it in bundles placed at the curb.

Anyone interested in being a volunteer at the 2010 Mercury Insurance Open should fill out a volunteer application form, available under the “Volunteers” tab at www.mercuryinsuranceopen.c om. For more information, call (760) 930-7031. “The tournament is quickly approaching and we are looking for energetic volunteers to help make this a successful event at the La Costa Resort and Spa this summer,” said Raquel Giscafre, Mercury Insurance Open tournament director. “It would not be possible to have a tournament like the Mercury Insurance Open without the help of volunteers,” Giscafre said. Tournament volunteers

should be at least 18 years of age and able to work a minimum of four shifts during the event. A shift is approximately five hours. Volunteers will receive a uniform consisting of a tournament shirt and sweatshirt. They will also receive one meal per shift worked. “Volunteers are our lifeline,” said Gail De Weese, a Carlsbad resident who serves as the Mercury Insurance Open director of volunteers. “Their contribution to the tournament is invaluable.” De Weese said tennis experience or knowledge of tennis is not required to be a volunteer, only a desire to help fans, players and officials have a more enjoyable tournament experience.
