Rotary supports peace ENCINITAS — Lee Gordon, the co-founder of the Hand-in-Hand bilingual and multi-cultural schools in Israel, returned to the Encinitas Rotary Club recently to offer an update on the progress of his mission. Gordon was joined by 15 youngsters, all students at the Arab/Jewish schools. Founded in 1997 with Amin Khalaf to build peace between Jews and Arabs in Israel, the Hand-in-Hand schools have grown from 50 students to more than 900, with four institutions built along key border areas. There are an equal number of students, as well as teachers and staff, from both sides of the cultural divide. The curriculum has been developed to be a balanced foundation for learning and living and each school is co-directed by Arab and Jewish co-principals. All grade levels are taught both Hebrew and Arabic, learning to treasure their own culture and language while understanding the differences of others around them. In a highly segregated country, the success of these schools in critical. Children are taught to uphold the values of the nation while socialized into groups with diverse attitudes toward Israel and its institutions. The immediate effect of children learning together is that their experiences and observations are passed on to their families. In turn, they become another voice in their communities. It is difficult for childhood friends to become adult enemies, especially with a greater understanding of the cultural differences and, most importantly, similarities. “In this tormented country, there is a corner where Arabs and Jews manage to not only get along, but to befriend and love each other,” Gordon said. In 1997, many doubted this experiment could work. Over the years though, more and more educators and business people have offered their help. Now there are partnerships in new communities, higher enrollment in the established programs and a demand for new schools.
