Mixed-media pop art exhibit at OMA By Promise Yee

OCEANSIDE — A preview reception for the pop art exhibit “Plastic Fantastic” by Encinitas artist Allison Renshaw drew a crowd to the Oceanside Museum of Art on Jan. 30. The colorful mixed-media compositions layer magazine images and paint to fuse images of SoCal high-end lifestyle with street culture and natural beauty. Magazine clips from Vogue, W, Surfers Journal, and Art in America mix on large canvases with painted fish, graffiti, and strings of coral. “The texture, form, and detail draws you into the space,” Michael C. Gross, museum curatorial advisory committee member, said. “It’s a seamless image and up close you find an out-of-place detail. There’s great surprise in it.” The artwork can be described as dreamy explosions. Renshaw rotates the canvas while she works on a piece to minimize a central focal point. The artwork draws your eye to the center, and then tumbles your focus in different directions. While there is the strong theme of natural beauty verses manmade beauty throughout the exhibit, there is also variety in the works on display. “Pervette,” a mixedmedia piece from 2009, floats strings of pink coral and sparkling diamonds under a border of the water’s edge. “Odyssey,” a mixedmedia piece from 2009, stacks up wintry, dark colors, “it” handbags, graffiti, and diamond bangled hands holding fish.

In that part of Italy that inspires poetic interpretations of the great wines Barolo and Barbaresco, there lies a humble grape that does its job day in and day out. Piedmont is a classic district, majestically rising from Italy’s southern Alps. The most revered grape is Nebbiolo with its muscular tannins that built the

Renshaw describes the works as a collision of ideas. She said she enjoys people’s different reactions to the art and likes to leave the meaning of each piece open to interpretation. The museum has an interactive station set up where guests can post their name for the exhibit. “Plastic Fantastic” is on display until June 20. Renshaw will conduct a Gallery Walk and Talk of the exhibit Feb. 25. Danielle Susalla, museum assistant director, said Renshaw will also lead a Free Family Art Day at the museum. It’s one of the few grapes in Italy that the wine takes its name from and that is Barbera. Barbera is the wine most people in Piedmont drink with dinner and it’s the most widely planted. It’s an everyday easy-to-drink wine that doesn’t need to be aged to get peak flavor. The grape’s acidity makes it superb as the wine for rustic, Italian-style cuisine. It ripens early and is less

finicky than the Nebbiolo grape. You often see Barbera grown with Nebbiolo, providing the vineyard with a more stable cash crop to help smooth out income. Prices at the retail level tend to be similar to Chianti Classicos in the Tuscany region. The wine is ruby red and powerful to the taste. Most of the brands are Italian from villages like Alba, Monferrato and Nizzi to name a few. In San Diego Country, try the 2007 Barbera from Witch Creek Winery in Carlsbad for

have tried numerous remedies, including prescription drugs. Because of side effects, I cannot use the prescriptions and have not had success with the other remedies. Unfortunately, I did not see your original article recommending the use of hawthorn berries. I have read the testimonials of those who were helped by the product and am interested in trying it. Could you please reprint the article? I have also been taking 250 milligrams of magnesium at bedtime.

Dear Reader: Because I have received so many letters regarding this topic, I have decided to share the information again.
