inflatable Christmas characters followed. “It’s the best parade we had in five years,” Jim Jenkins, Oceanside Yacht Club vice commodore, said. The evening was clear and a warm 60 degrees after coastal fog lifted at 5:15 p.m., a couple of hours before the 7 p.m. parade start. The previous year, the parade was almost called off due to rain, and the year before that, the parade was cancelled due to wind and rain. About 2,500 spectators lined the harbor to watch the parade. The competition is about bragging rights, holiday spirit and community camaraderie. “It really brings everyone together, club members, slip renters and merchants,” Jenkins said. This year awards were given to the best powerboat, best sailboat, best of event and

most creative. Next year a dockside light contest will be added for boaters who want to partici-

pate without taking their boats Parade winners are postout. “Not everyone has the ed on the Oceanside Yacht skills and ability to ride their Club website at www.oceanside boats at night,” Jenkins said. yc. com.

bers to work at the shop are Raul Villamar, who retired from a career in sales before he learned barbering, and Martin Villamar’s son, Matthew, who joined the team of family haircutters at age 22. Joe Villamar Sr. remains the main barber. “Dad watches us like a hawk and tells us what we’re doing wrong,” Raul Villamar said. Joe Villamar Sr. paid for his sons’ training once they expressed interest in joining the family business. “The family is very supportive of us going to barber school,”

Raul Villamar said. “Mom’s dream was for us to go to Catholic school and for us to become barbers and follow in Dad’s footsteps. Both her dreams came true.” The Villamar family prides itself on giving friendly customer service. “Someone else wouldn’t take care of clients like we would,” Raul Villamar said. The television is usually tuned into “Pawn Stars,” Animal Planet or sports as conversation flows. “It’s like an old fashioned barber shop,” Raul Villamar said.

“We have a lot of fun.” In the future the barbershop is expected to undergo a few changes. Joe Villamar Sr. is set to retire soon and shaves may be added to the list of services. Perhaps the biggest change is that some of the daughters of the present barbers are considering joining the currently all-male family business in a few years. The Encinitas Barber Shop is located at 603 1/2 S. Coast Highway 101. Call (760) 436-8598 for hours and information.

Costal Cuisine, which won the meat category. Chef Daniel Barron created a Wagyu Beef short rib surf n turf with dehydrated crispy lobster puff, and sea urchin emulsion squeezed out of a pipette, and lobster tater tot (again with the tater tots). This dish was “Iron Chef” worthy. California Crepes was part of our mix also and it was almost as if they had accepted

their fate, serving up mini crepes that, as Chef Zonfrilli put it, were “straight out of the can lameness.” While Kitchen 1540 was not on our list, I have to mention the crazy inventive Turducken Nuggets with potato air, cranberry gelèe and foie gras gravy that Chef Paul McCabe was dishing out. It was one of the few North County eateries represented but it earned Kitchen 1540 second place overall. The Grand Prize Winner

of the 2010 “Chef of the Fest” Competition was Chef Robert Ruiz of Harney Sushi for his “Cunning Lengua” — Sapporro-style braised Newport beef tongue with Fallbrook Fuyu persimmon and roasted Oregon Coast matsutake, garnished with chili Daikon-Shoga, 3D demi-glauce and micro shiso. Wow, that’s a mouthful, and a delightful mouthful it was. The whole experience was very memorable and yes, the rain let up and the lines were

long at most every booth. This is a great event and I would encourage every food enthusiast to check it out next year. The eighth annual San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival will take place Nov. 16 to Nov. 20, 2011. For more information, visit www.world ofwineevents.com.
