were nonproblems when the majority of the public smoked, and now that about 10 percent do (my within-Del Mar estimate). The rush to such wide-sweeping prohibition was and is literally ludicrous. I also pointed out the little-known fact that the first nation to ban smoking was Nazi Germany in 1941, by edict of Adolph Hitler. So how will the new law be enforced, by a Del Mar version of the Gestapo? I wonder how the visitors from all over the world that the city is dependent upon will view Del Mar when they are ticketed for using a legal product on a public sidewalk. I emphasized that this is not a matter of whether you smoke or not (I am a not) or whether you approve or not. It is a matter of protecting the liberties of the minority as much as those of the majority and of precedent, meaning “what will be next?” The common areas of apartment buildings? And guess what then? The sound of heavy boots is getting closer and closer, and as history bears out, will continue to until everybody but the police state is shuddering. Jim Donovan Del Mar

New Carlsbad consignment boutique targets tweens By Alyx Sariol

CARLSBAD — It’s no secret that girls of all ages love to shop for new shoes or the perfect jeans. However, pre-teen girls often have a hard time finding the latest trends in their sizes and at affordable prices. Enter in Rose BuenoMurphy. She is the proud owner of Tween Scene, Carlsbad’s only consignment boutique geared toward young girls aged 9 to 12. “I’m so excited about it — I just can’t calm down,” Bueno-Murphy said. The age-appropriate clothing shop recently opened on State Street to provide an affordable and empowering experience for those girls stuck “in between,” she said. “It’s when she’s not playing with toys anymore, but she also doesn’t know how to deal with boys,” Bueno-Murphy said. “What she’s doing is trying to figure out who she is.” Bueno-Murphy has gone the extra mile to provide a

unique and personalized shopping experience to young girls. She only accepts gently used clothes from recent seasons and even travels up to Los Angeles to find stock for her store, which is often a challenge. “When I go to L.A. to buy for tweens, they have

never even heard of the word,” she said. “I have to go to the junior section and look for young designs.” For Bueno-Murphy, the challenge is more than worth it because of the smiles it brings to her young customers. Faces light up at the sight of the wide variety of

clothes offered at extremely affordable prices, which is typically unheard of for designer items. To give girls even more say in their wardrobe, Bueno-Murphy has implemented an account system that can’t be found at any mall. With a parent’s guidance, girls can sell clothes

and earn money toward their account that can be used right in the store. “They can learn empowerment this way,” she said. “They’re picking our their own clothes, managing their own money.” Although she has started off small with this new shopping concept, BuenoMurphy has big plans for the Tween Scene’s future. She hopes to create a fashion haven filled with fun and imaginative elements that will appeal to all tween girls. She also plans on incorporating makeup classes, fashion shows and other events where moms and daughters can bond over a love for trendy — and affordable — clothes. “It’s become a passion,” Bueno-Murphy said. “I get really excited about the kids when they come in and go nuts over the clothes.” Visit the Tween Scene store, located at 2659 State Street, or learn more online at www.rnccommunity.com.

Harleys and leathers for local church group By Promise Yee

OCEANSIDE — “Jesus saves bikers too,” is the slogan on Pastor Fred Zariczny’s business card. Fred Zariczny, better known as Pastor Z, is the founder of Bikers for Christ International ministry and Rushing Wind Ministries church in Oceanside. Bikers for Christ International boasts 4,000 leather-clad evangelists who share the word of God with fellow bikers, veterans and anyone searching for God. “We’re going full throttle for Jesus,” Zariczny said. The ministry also serves the community with food distribution and prayer. “The Lord tells us the needs,” elder Kevin Fadden said. Rushing Winds Ministry church in Oceanside has 100 members. There are affiliate churches in almost every state and in 19 countries worldwide. While you do not have to be a biker to be a church member, biker culture is an

integral part of the church and ministry. Sunday services are relaxed, with a four-piece Christian rock band amplified over a top-notch sound system. Members roll in on their Harleys, wear the church patch, and have the black and red church logo tattooed on their arms, necks or backs. There is even an onstaff tattoo artist who travels with the ministry. “We take folks ‘as is’,” Pastor Z said. “We welcome everybody and anybody riding up on a bike, car or Vespa.” Zariczny found his calling when a friend invited him to church. He was using drugs, riding with an outlaw biker club and searching for meaning when the message he heard in church clicked. Zariczny served as a church volunteer and studied to be a pastor. He founded Bikers for Christ ministry and Calvary Chapel in Marysville in 1990, and Rushing Wind Ministries in Oceanside in 2000. “I reached out to the

kind of people I used to be like,” Zariczny said. Zariczny works as an evangelist and pastor. He is a self-described mix of Billy

Graham’s preaching and Robin Williams’ humor when he talks about God. Church services are straight from the Bible.

Church members flip from Revelations 4:2-3 to Exodus 28:2, as Pastor Z compares jasper to his wife’s diamond ring. His delivery is light and inclusive. Pastor Z leads churchgoers through one chapter of the Bible each Sunday, reading the word, giving a tangible example, and adding in a joke. Where the Bible tells of elders wearing white, Zariczny reassures members that good guys wear black too, when they’re out riding and dealing with oil and bugs. Church members nod, laugh and follow along with the Bible in hand. Pastor Z speaks at biker rallies and churches across the U.S. He is a regular speaker at the Sturgis Rally held in Black Hills, S.D., and will be speak at a festival in Belgium in September. Zariczny is always ready to bring Jesus into the conversation. “Jesus is an awesome guy,” Zariczny said.

Veteran journalist Bill Arballo reflects on local history.

Press parties were a blast in the early days of the racetrack DEL MAR — Opening day of thoroughbred racing has always been a great attraction. Hollywood personalities were a dime a dozen when a dime was worth a dime. However, for the media that covered the races it was the lavish media gatherings a week or so before opening. Unlimited plate-size steaks and beverages of choice were on the menu. The highlight of the evening was the entertainment starring Hollywood celebs, like Georgie Jessel, Jim Durante, Mickey Rooney and Bing Crosby. They stood in line eager to get on stage.

At one such event a couple unknowns posing as new, on-the-job waiters later were introduced as Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. By then they had thoroughly irritated the journalists with their

unprofessional antics. Jerry dropped a salad on the floor, scooped it up, put it on the table and wiped his hands on the tablecloth. The soup he served was

cold and the bread was slightly moldy. Their performance came to a conclusion when Dean, who was serving pie for dessert smacked Jerry with a lemon meringue — a

usual ending for a comedy skit in those days. They joined the party afterward which always lasted until early the next morning when the last of the media mites wobbled home.
