before the proclamation. “Tonight I brought one of our throwers, Breana Jemison, who is the only athlete in San Diego County to win the State Championship this year in track and field,” Pacheco said. “She holds the lead record for shot put and discus and has shattered the Carlsbad High School record.” Jemison is also a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) district champion and holds a high grade point average as she enters her senior year. Pacheco wanted everyone to know that Jemison’s mother, Mary, who was in the audience, raised three wonderful kids as a single mother. She stressed to her children the importance of God, family, school, community
THE COAST NEWS and sports — and yes, in that order. Pacheco, a coach at Carlsbad High School for 15 years, describes the Jemison children as great assets to the city of Carlsbad. “This is only the second time in Carlsbad High School history that a student athlete has won first place in California State Track and Field Championship,” Hall said. “In order to accomplish this great feat, Breana demonstrated exceptional physical dexterity and individual discipline which shot putting requires.” The proclamation also underscored Jemison’s Lancer pride, dedication, inspirational efforts and noteworthy publicity she has brought to the town of Carlsbad. Jemison began participating in track and field during
her freshman year. On average, she practices five days a week. Jemison said when she’s not practicing or playing shot put, she’s always thinking about it. “I love it,” Jemison said. “It’s a passion.” Even during her time off in the summer months, she continues to fine-tune and improve her game. Jemison said she thanked God who blessed her with her talents, her family, coaches, friends and everyone who has supported her. Jemison’s mother said that as long as her daughter continues to strive and do well, and the ambition remains, then it’s great. Pacheco said that Jemison’s drive is positive and she harnesses in the traits of being the best she can be. She offers impeccable sports-
manship toward her teammates and even her competitors. “Breana not only has talent but she has that rare, rare quality of not wanting to lose,” Pacheco said. “And she comes to practice knowing that there’s a bigger picture than shot put.” This picture is having Jemison know that schoolwork comes before shot put and how her family and coaches support her in living a good, responsible life. Pacheco said that he believes that Jemison’s talents will continue far after she graduates from high school. In fact, he predicts something quite special that the town of Carlsbad may very well look forward to one day. “She will be an Olympian,” Pacheco said

Guide to Staying Young and Having Fun.” She got her start modeling after appearing in a credit card ad. Schmall, who turned 78 on July 20, has been living in Del Mar for a year. One of her artwork designs will be featured as the cover of a book of poetry called, “Deeper into the pond,” the result of a contest she entered and won. She produces artwork using what she’s termed “rainbow geometry,” which she describes as the light that bounces off of all of us and produces an emotional response. Her artwork has been featured in Crepes and Corks. She said she could go around painting pictures of trees and ducks and things, but instead opts to explore the imagination, helping to expose the joy out of the ordinary. “I love the idea of helping people to see their own lives,” she said. “Especially children, they’re wide-open to try things, and the fact that they should be seen and not heard, I think, is way out of date.I think children should be heard, because they see things…in such a pretty way. They’re such a joy to be with — they can be annoying on the other end of things, for sure.”

cities, such as neighboring Solana Beach, who are already working to install the units. Mosier said because the grant money is part of the American Reinvestment Act, it is a time-limited opportunity. “All this money has to be expended by the end of next year and if we want to participate in this Ecotality program we need to move fairly rapidly,” he said. Bekkar said the city is guaranteed the installation credits but it should act by the end of the year. “I think we have a little bit of time, but then again, this is Del Mar so we may need it,” he said. “We’re going to move forward with due speed in the Del Mar way,” Mosier said A people observer, Schmall said that the art of conversation is dwindling, too. Conversation is not about talking, conversation is about listening,” she said. “I think there’s a lot of loneliness in this country; I think the computers and technology have made us feel isolated. I think Facebook is not the answer; I’ve got 101 friends on Facebook — I don’t even know more than 20 of them.” She was frightened one day when she “Googled” her name and saw how many pages there were with her name on them. “I’m afraid to write anything. Why does it do that?” While Schmall does enjoy her free time in Del Mar, she is still looking to participate within community. “I think the average person may look at only young people, and I think that’s a mistake. I think there’s some of us, may not be young, but we are still able to extend the skills that are needed at the time,” she said. But for the time being, Schmall said she is enjoying the highway she’s on just now.
