Tribes convene for pow wow celebration By Promise Yee

New red shoes reason for happy dance Watching “Sex in the City” reruns will be a lot more fun now. I almost understand why some women will spend hundreds of dollars for a pair of shoes. I was reminded this week as my new pair arrived in the mail. Never mind that I will never be a Rodeo Drive shoe shopper. I am a sucker for red shoes. It appears even an inexpensive pair can move me, if they turn out to be exactly what I want. My new red tennies are just that. Wearing them makes me feel brilliant. I don’t know why I’m surprised. My first memory of a favorite outfit was as I walked to school in the fifth-grade. My mom had sewn me a fabulous, blackand-white full skirt under which I wore multiple, fluffy petticoats. I wore that skirt paired with a crisp, white blouse and red sweater and what may have been my first pair of red tennis shoes. I felt like a million bucks. My memory hops to college when I had a glorious pair of red patent leather high-heeled sandals that made me very popular in the sorority house. The motto back then was, “The first one up is the best one dressed.” These days I love my red shoes even more if they are comfortable and I have bought them for a great price. There are few delights equal to browsing the discount-store shoe shelves and coming up on a perfect pair. I was especially fond of some adorable clog-style red tennis shoes I stumbled over. They were not only supremely comfortable, but they drew compliments every time I wore them. I hated it when they finally wore out. I felt the same about a wonderful pair of red moccasins I came upon for a pittance. But then my TURN TO SMALL TALK ON B12

OCEANSIDE — Tribes from across the Southwest gathered for the 15th annual Inter-Tribal Pow Wow at Mission San Luis Rey June 11 and June 12. “We have some tribes from Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico,” Carmen Mojado, pow wow organizer, said. “They come from all over.” The two-day event shared performances of Native American dances, drumming and bird singing and demonstrations of basket weaving. All tribes participated in the grand opening ceremony that recognized pow wow organizers and lead dancers. The ceremony closed with the friendship dance in which spectators were invited to participate. Other event highlights included artisan craft booths, Indian tacos and fry bread vendors.

Home & Patio Expo features eclectic downtown merchants By Wehtahnah Tucker

ENCINITAS — Several merchants showcased their talents by decorating living spaces at the newly opened Pacific Station on Coast Highway 101 during the Downtown Encinitas Mainstreet Association’s first annual Home & Patio Expo. The free two-day event open to the public was well attended June 11 and June 12. Local furniture and lifestyle merchants furnished the living and dining areas of five vacant units. In addition, other downtown businesses that specialize in home décor, furnishings and home improvement participated in the expo with displays in the common areas of Pacific

Station. Each merchant decorating a space brought something unique to the experience. They include the Community Resource Center Thrift Store, Rustic Rooster, Bliss 101 and Grounded. “We believe that art, design and nature are all connected. Grounded offers a diverse assortment of unique accessories and furniture that bridges the gap between indoor and outdoor living,” according to owner Juli Risner. The expo was a unique platform for merchants to inform potential customers about all of their services and merchandise. “It’s a good chance for

some of the people to see how modern furniture can actually fit into a home,” Risner said. “It’s kind of like an idea house. I think it will be a lot of fun. It’s harder to picture how furniture will look in your own home when it’s in a showroom, so actually designing a space will be beneficial.” Several attendees were inspired by the designs. “I got a lot of really good ideas,” said Melissa Copperton, an Encinitas resident. “It’s so much easier to see how something in a shop can actually fit into your own house when it’s in this kind of setting.” Donations from the FULL HOUSE <I/96*92& $-& 5*$58*& ?020%& %3*& !$4/%$4/& S/(0/0%"2 TURN TO EXPO ON B23
