School Board approves in-person instruction at CHS, CMS beginning Jan. 2021 BY EVELYN SPENCE

The Carpinteria Unified School District Board has approved the reopening of in-person instruction at Carpinteria Middle and High schools beginning Jan. 7, 2021, at the start of the schools’ second semesters. Board member Rogelio Delgado dissented. “Due to the availability of paid sick leave and expanded family and medical leave related to Covid-19 under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) until Dec. 31, 2020, we will not have adequate staffing for the CMS or CHS classrooms and there are very few secondary content area substitute teachers,” Superintendent Diana Rigby said during the board’s Oct. 13 meeting. Rigby added that there is only one month left before the schools’ first semesters end, and that it would “be too disruptive for the high school students to transition to a hybrid model so late into the first semester.” Delgado said he did not agree with the decision to have the secondary schools reopen in January. “Anything can happen,” he said. “The risk is out there. It only takes one child.”

Carpinteria elementary schools

Carpinteria Elementary Schools began their first day of hybrid instruction on Monday, Oct. 13, according to Rigby. “It was very successful at all the four schools,” she said. Students have been divided into Cohorts A and B; Cohort A is learning in person on Mondays and Tuesdays, while Cohort B is learning in person on Thursdays and Fridays. During the days when the cohorts are not in person, they are working remotely online. The size of cohorts can range between five and 14 students, Rigby said. “During the day, there is no mixing of cohorts,” Rigby said. “Students social distance six feet and they all wear masks, even our T-K students had their masks on today.” Within the elementary school, 42 students have chosen to remain in independent study and not participate in hybrid learning.

Covid-19 testing

Last week, 109 CUSD employees were tested for Covid-19. Zero percent tested positive. The next round of testing is scheduled for Oct. 26.

Carpinteria High School athletic conditioning

At Carpinteria High School, some athletic programs—boys and girls water polo, boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, cheerleading and football— began equipment-free training and conditioning. Two adults and a maximum of 14 students are allowed to train at one time. Students are required to fill out daily selfcheck forms before beginning training. The form asks students questions related to Covid-19, specifically whether they have been diagnosed or are experiencing symptoms or if they have been in contact with someone who has Covid-19. The campus is closed to the general public.
