Carpinteria’s Christmas Bird Count A joyful tradition

IN THE NATUREHOOD

NANCY BARON

STEVE GAINES

I was lucky to spot the Solitary sandpiper at Lake Jocelyn – which is much needed freshwater for the birds – but is sadly now dry.

JOHN CALLENDER

Costa’s Hummingbird showed up again for the third time in 2019. I was thrilled to spot one previously on Shepard Mesa.

On Dec. 19, people armed with binoculars and spotting scopes will fan out from the coast to the hills around Carpinteria in search of birds. This hunt is part of the 121st Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC)—an intensive citizenscience endeavor involving tens of thousands of people across the United States and Canada.

D uring the 1800s, the trad ition w as an actual “C hristmas B ird H unt” w ith teams compe ting to see how many birds they could shoot. H istorical p hotos show vintage vehicles dr ap ed w ith the bodi es of bird s like d ecorations. Triump hant hunters stand alongsid e, d isp laying hundr eds of de ad birds ranging from haw ks to d ucks and geese to tiny songbird s. The incredi ble abundan ce and di versity of colorful, limp trop hies looks shocking now . Espe cially w hen you conside r that the numbers of bird s w ould seem unthinkable to see in a day, never mind shoot.

In 1900, ornithologist Frank Chapman, an early officer in the National Audubon, proposed an alternative tradition: A “Christmas Bird Census” that would count birds rather than kill them. It reflected a shift in thinking about birds as an unlimited resource towards appreciation and conservation.

According to Audubon historical records, Chapman and 27 other dedicated birders conducted the first Christmas Bird Count census in 25 areas ranging from Toronto, Canada to Pacific Grove, California. These days, Christmas Bird Counts happen across North America between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5. It is the longest running citizen-science endeavor in the world.

Saturday, Dec. 19 will be the 12th year of the Carpinteria Bird Count. For the past three years, John Callender, who leads the local Carpinteria birding group meetings, has taken the helm as the CBC compiler.

Callender has been busily preparing— scouting locations to find specific birds and focusing the biweekly bird meetings to prepare others. His overview of local hotspots using Google Earth is well worth a look. (Find it on carpwithoutcars.org.)

Christmas bird count volunteers will focus on specific areas within the designated 15-mile diameter circle, counting every bird they see, giving an indication of the total number of birds in the circle that day. This, along with the Breeding Bird Survey which happens each spring, provides important benchmarks showing the presence, absence and numbers of birds over time. Audubon and other organizations use the data to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action. In fact, you can look up your favorite birds and see their population trends over the last few decades using a tool created from this data. (Visit Audubon.org to see and explore the data.)

Throughout my life, wherever I am, I have tried to do a Christmas bird count. It’s a joyful part of the Christmas season for me. For the past half-dozen years, I’ve been happy to take inventory of the birds in the hills above Carpinteria with the same few friends. Each year brings memorable moments: A rare sighting of a Solitary sandpiper at Lake Jocelyn last year (now dry), the seldom seen Costa’s hummingbird the year before on Shepard Mesa. And always the search for owls.

Callender recalled a vivid memory of visiting Jameson Lake after the 2017 Thomas Fire. The reservoir, which supplies water to Montecito, is hard to reach and accessible only with permission. Callender recalls the drive through the charred hills all the way along to the lake as akin to “a lunar landscape.” The place, known for being very birdy, was eerily quiet—until suddenly—ground-dwelling termites emerged from the charred soil taking wing. “Then the birds were going berserk—they were totally ignoring us as they feasted on the termites,” recalled John.

I remember that Christmas count well too, an exceptional time when so many birds— fire refugees—descended from the burned hillsides into our little town in search of food, shelter and water .

The nectar sipping Orchard oriole is another special bird that has shown up the past two years.

Lots of people have already begun scouting for hard-to-find birds and vagrants—birds that wander in from out of range like the Painted redstart from last year. Callender’s aspirational bird he hopes to see on count day this year is the Mountain quail. He shared a picture taken at a distance, albeit not on a day when it could be counted. And he’s hoping Carpinteria birders will break the record of spotting 158 different species seen in one day.

This year, the CBC will make adjustments to account for Covid: no carpools except for people sharing a bubble. Neighborhood walks are an option and others may choose to simply watch their yards and feeders. All are welcome. You simply have to register at carpwithoutcars.org and be coordinated into groups and areas so birds aren’t double counted. Instead of the typical potluck dinner meeting and “round up,” organizers will conduct a Zoom meeting to tally the totals.

As winter looms ahead, birds can lift our spirits. For beginner birders, the Christmas bird count is a good way to learn about the birds that share our community. For experienced birders, it’s always an adventure of discovery.

Who knows what surprises are in store this year?

The first-time-ever discovery of a gorgeous Painted redstart last year was a wonderful surprise.
