Obituaries Julian B. Canton 10/26/1922 – 7/31/2015

Julian B. Canton, usually called JB, was born on Oct. 26, 1922 in Nashua, Mont. JB spent most of his childhood in the small town of Englewood, KS. JB joined the U.S. Navy and while serving his country, he was accepted into the ROTC Program at the University of Southern California. JB graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Science Degree and Master Degree Teachers of Mathematics. He was commissioned as an officer and assigned to a ship, around the time World War II ended. In 1946 JB was honorably discharged from active duty, then joined the Naval Reserves as a Supply Corp Officer where receiving rank of Commander, serving for 20 years and retiring in 1964. JB pursued a career in education, teaching high school mathematics and Spanish for 10 years in the Los Angeles area. JB moved to Carpinteria, Calif. where he worked in real estate as a salesman and after several years started his own real estate business as a broker, called Surf Realty, selling the business after 31 years. JB and Dorothy Olson were married March 10, 1951 and to this union three children were born Jay, Marvin and Anne. JB was active in the community serving on the School Board, Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge while living in the beach community. Upon leaving Carpinteria, he continued to sell land parcels and opened a land office in Kern County, Calif. along with Dick Underwood, a salesman for JB many years. JB returned to Kansas in 1993 where he grew up, continuing to sell real estate while living in the Ashland Community. He enjoyed spending time with the Senior Coffee Club. JB left his earthly home on July 31, 2015 at the Ashland Health Center, after battling cancer. JB is survived by his former wife, Dorothy, Simi Valley, Calif.; son, Jay B Canton and wife Kim of Ashland, Kan.; Marvin L. Canton, Lompoc, Calif.; daughter Anne J. Canton, Escondido, Calif.; sister Lucy Nice, Round Rock, Texas; brother Edwin Canton and wife Carol, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; eight grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. A funeral service is scheduled for Aug. 6, 2015 at 10 a.m. United Methodist Church Ashland, Kan. Burial will follow in the Englewood Cemetery with the Ashland FVW Post 7770 Military Graveside Rite. Joetta Anne Gardner 2/26/1946 – 7/25/2015

Joetta Gardner passed on July 25, 2015 in Bremerton Wash.—69 years young. She was born in Upland, Calif. on Feb. 26, 1946. She was a long time resident of Carpinteria, Calif. and a summer resident of Bremerton, Wash. She graduated from Chaffey High School and married Albert Gardner in 1964; they celebrated their 51st anniversary on July 12. They raised two children, Charles (wife Christine) Gardner and Denyce Gardner. They have two wonderful grandchildren, Daniel Gardner and Amanda Morris, and four amazing great-grandchildren, Charlie, Aryanna, Ferrin and Catherine. Joetta had a long career with Verizon and retired in 2002. Joetta lived LOUD! She laughed often and encouraged all around to roar with her. She had a resounding laugh that crowned her robust and hearty spirit. She found great joy in the small details of life. She loved a good Jalama burger! Joetta has an unyielding love for her family (furry family as well) and was our solid foundation. She would much rather be remembered than memorialized. A remembrance gathering in Washington will be Thursday, Aug. 6. Carpinteria remembrance TBA. Joetta: Knows better, fears less, loves more. We love you and miss you!

Larry Carl McIntyre 1946 - 2015

Larry Carl McIntyre, a 1964 graduate of Carpinteria High School, went home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He passed peacefully at his home in Tehachapi, CA, on Sunday, July 26, 2015, after a battle with ALS. He was 69 years old. After serving for seven years as a fireman for the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire District, he was promoted to engineer, where he served for his remaining 14 years with the department. Larry truly loved working with the department and built lasting friendships, once saying, “It’s the best job in the world.” A visitation is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7, 2015, from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at Mountain Bible Church, located at 630 Maple Street, Tehachapi. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. at the church with a reception to follow. Interment with military honors will be at Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin, Calif. at 2 p.m. Arrangements were made with the assistance of Wood Family Funeral Service, Inc. Steve Soden 1/21/1947 – 7/20/2015

Steve Soden passed away on July 20, 2015. Steve was born on January 21, 1947 in Inglewood CA. He spent his early years in Santa Ana, Calif. where he attended elementary and junior high school. His family moved to Carpinteria in 1961. Steve attended Carpinteria High School and graduated with the class of 1965. He was drafted into the Army and he served a combat tour of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for his service. Steve had many interests including surfing, creative writing and art. He also spent time studying perception in sport, particularly tennis and golf. Steve spent his last years bravely confronting the ravages of Parkinson’s Disease. Steve is survived by his father John W. Soden of Santa Barbara, brothers David of Crystal Lake, Ill., John of Waltham Mass., and Rick of Lahaina, Hawaii; niece Amanda of Portland, Ore., nephews Stan and Andy of Crystal Lake, Ill. and Cameron of Los Alamitos, Calif.; uncle Bob Edgar of Paso Robles. Steve also had a special relationship with Rodney, Anne, Lucian and Tristan Cravens. The family wishes to express special appreciation to Marsha Cravens and Anna Gardner. A Celebration of Steve’s Life is being planned to coincide with the annual Soden family gathering in October. An announcement will follow.
