The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system.

A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

2009 Season outlook minutes in the midfield after finishing last season one goal, two assists, and 12 shots. In addition to the experienced offense, newcomers Sean McCormick, Zane El-Shami and forward Luis Faz are expected to get some significant playing time on the pitch. The five seniors- Hunter, Bekka, Phillip Blake, Scott Rickets, and James Stapleton-will be expected to step into a leadership role as well as juniors Latham, McRight, Phelps and Kelly. “If we can identify some good leaders that will enable us to join together like we did last year, we can maximize the potential of the group on the field,” Docking said. “That is going to be the big key for us this year.” Experience will not only be found on the field, but also through the coaching as Docking is back for his 12th season with the Chants. He is looking to lead the Chants to a fifth Big South Tournament Championship in his career at Coastal Carolina. Adding to his staff this year will be assistant Michael Rubecsh, who coached Division III Emory men’s soccer team for 19 seasons. “Mike has a tremendous amount of experience at the college and professional level,” Docking said. “He is going to be a great asset to our program and the University. I am excited to have Mike here personally and professionally.” The Chants’ 2009 schedule is filled with tough competition and a heavy travel schedule. The season opener is set for Sept. 1 against Southern Conference-foe College of Charleston. The Chants will also be participating in various tournaments including the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational at the home pitch which hosts the St. Francis (N.Y.) Terriers, Albany Great Danes and Virginia Commonwealth Rams. To conclude the non-conference schedule, the Chanticleers make a trip to the West Coast for the Cal State Fullerton Tournament on Sept. 25 through 27. The conference schedule will open with Liberty at home on Oct. 3, and end with the Big South Tournament in High Point, N.C. on Nov. 12-15. Docking is expecting the Big South title to be up for grabs this season. “We are excited about the tournament and the non conference schedule,” Docking said. “It will be tough, but we have a lot of good teams that could potentially make us better.” As for the conference schedule and the infamous Big South Title, “This year, anyone can win it.”

The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team enters the 2009 campaign after finishing second in the Big South Tournament last season in a double-overtime heartbreaking, 3-2, loss to Winthrop. Despite the loss, the Chanticleers will seek to reclaim their Big South Conference title with a bulk of experience and promising newcomers. The Chants finished the 2008 campaign at the 10-10-1 mark with noteworthy games such as an overtime victory against nationally-ranked Charlotte, 2-1 and hitting a five-game unbeaten streak in mid-season. Most of the Chants’ success through the 2008 campaign could be contributed to the strong back line. Defensively, the Chants will be returning the All-Big South Conference Second Team player, junior Ross Kelly, along with teammates Robbie McRight, Alex Russell and Joe Russell. The players will be looked to fill the hole that was left from defender Kyle Russell, the two time All Big South Conference player and captain. As the final line of defense, redshirtjunior, Phillip Latham, finished with a 1.63 goals against average, and was the primary starter (20 out of the 21 games) in the 2008 season. This year, however, Latham will have competition in keeping the starting position with transfer Taylor Kelliher, who started three games in 2008 for Illinois at Chicago. Redshirt-sophomore Scott Angevine did not play last year, but is also battling for some playing time. Newcomer Bradley Bugg could possibly earn some playing time as he adjusts and learns the collegiate game. Leading the offensive attack is forward Robert Hunter, who led the Chants in the key most offensive categories with 11 goals and 28 points. Hunter also earned honors on the First Big South All Tournament team and All-Big South Conference team. “Rob has got a natural ability for the game of soccer,” Head Coach Shaun Docking said. “He’s going into his last year and I know Rob is really focused and excited to end his college career in a positive way.” Also playing along Hunter in the front will be Riley Phelps, who had quality minutes on the pitch and finished the season with four goals and two assists. Holding down the midfield, the Chants are looking forward to the return of Djamel Bekka, who suffered a season-ending injury in 2008. Bekka finished the 2007 season with six goals and seven assists while starting all 19 games and earning Second Team All- Big South Conference. Junior Matt Schroeder will also get quality

HEAD COACH SHAUN DOCKING Shaun Docking is entering his 13th season as the head coach of the Coastal Carolina University’s men’s soccer program. In his tenure, he has led the Chanticleers to a 135-74-15 overall record, and a 54-19-3 Big South Conference record. Docking also carries an impressive post season resume, as he has brought Coastal Carolina three Big South Regular Season Championships, four BSC Tournament Championships and five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2001-2005. Overall, he has posted a 155-93-17 record in 13 seasons as a head coach and has earned five Big South Coach of the Year awards. In 2008, Docking guided Coastal Carolina to a 10-10-1 record and a 5-2-1 ledger in Big South action. The Chants earned the second seed in the Big South Tournament, only to fall to Winthrop in the double-overtime heartbreaker, 4-3, in the championship game. In Docking’s 11 seasons at the helm for Coastal Carolina, the Chants have posted an astonishing 60-21-6 (.724) record at home. In 2007, Docking led the Chants to a 10-8-1 record and a perfect 6-0 in the Big South to earn him his fifth Big South Coach of the Year honor and fifth Big South Regular season championship. Two seasons ago, Docking led the Chants to an 11-7-2 overall record and a 5-2 mark in league action. Coastal Carolina earned the No. 2 seed in the Big South Tournament and advanced to the semifinal round. Coastal Carolina posted a 6-1-1 record at the friendly confines of the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field, including a perfect 4-0 slate against league foes. The Chanticleers claimed the Big South Tournament championship for the fourth time in the last five years to make its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2005. In 2004, Docking’s squad won the Big South Tournament to claim their spot in the NCAA Tournament. In 2003, Docking led the Chants to its best ever season, posting a school best 20-3 record. The squad won both the regular season and Big South Tournament titles. The team also recorded 14 shutouts, also a school record. The Chants rode a 13-game winning streak into the third round of the NCAA Tournament, the furthest the team has ever gone. The season also saw the culmination of Joseph Ngwenya’s collegiate career after earning countless conference, regional and national honors and setting eight single-season and career records. Docking’s 2002 squad finished with a then school-record 19-3-2 mark. The team also earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, this time going as an at-large. After defeating South Carolina in the opening round in Columbia, the Chants lost in the second round on penalty kicks at Clemson. Docking was named the Big South Coach of the Year and also laid claim to coaching the Big South Player of the Year, Ngwenya. The program came full-circle in 2001 as the Chanticleers won their sixth Big South crown and made their third trip to a NCAA Tournament. CCU completed the season with a 10-8-3 overall record and a 3-2-2 mark in league play. In the opening round of the NCAA tournament, Coastal Carolina fell 2-1 to Seton Hall, despite outshooting the Pirates and playing much of the game on Seton Hall’s end of the field. Docking took over a struggling Coastal Carolina program in 1998 and led his first Chants squad to a 7-9-2 record. The resurgence of the soccer program at Coastal Carolina was put into high gear in 1999 as the Docking-led Chanticleers went 12-4-1 and placed second in the league. In 2000, Docking earned his second Coach of the Year honor as his Coastal squad went 11-5-1 and captured the Big South’s regular season championship.

Coastal Carolina University Mission Statement

Original approved by the Coastal Carolina University Board of Trustees on April 18, 1997 Update adopted by the Coastal Carolina University Board of Trustees on December 14, 2007

Coastal Carolina University is a public comprehensive liberal arts institution that seeks to develop students who are both knowledgeable in their chosen fields and prepared to be productive, responsible, healthy citizens with a global perspective. To deliver on this commitment, Coastal Carolina recruits highly qualified and motivated students, faculty, and staff from the region, state, nation, and world to create a diverse and dynamic student-centered learning environment. Because Coastal Carolina embraces the teacher-scholar model, it places primary emphasis on high quality teaching and engaged learning, and it supports faculty research, creative activities, and expert collaboration in the community, state, nation, and world. This focus enables faculty and staff to mentor students in collaborative research, creative opportunities, and internships. To nurture this active learning community, Coastal Carolina maintains a broad range of contemporary technologies, programming, support services, and innovative course offerings and delivery methods. The result is alumni who are well prepared for professional careers or graduate programs in their chosen fields and who continue to be connected to Coastal Carolina. Inspired by its founding in 1954 to serve the educational needs of the immediate area, Coastal Carolina has grown with the region to become a mid-sized regional comprehensive university with a tradition of a strong liberal arts core. As such, Coastal Carolina commits its resources to maintaining a population of 8,000 – 12,000 students by building baccalaureate and selective master’s programs of national and/or regional significance in the arts and sciences, business, humanities, education, and health and human services. Coastal Carolina fully embraces its leadership role as a regional center of economic and intellectual resources, lifelong learning, cultural and recreational opportunities, and athletic programs. As Coastal Carolina executes this mission, it recognizes its responsibility to be a role model to the community and to the professions by assuring fair and honest treatment of people with whom it interacts and sustainable stewardship of resources entrusted to it, adopting the highest standards of integrity and accountability, and committing itself to excellence through continuous self-improvement.

MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA

The City of Myrtle Beach is in the center of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile crescent of beach on the South Carolina coast. In the last 25 years, Myrtle Beach has developed into the premier resort destination on the East Coast. Our 25,000 permanent residents welcome millions of visitors each year to this full-service resort community. Guests come to enjoy the wide beaches, the Atlantic Ocean, and an incredible range of activities and entertainment. Myrtle Beach was incorporated as a town in 1938 and became a city in 1957. Its name comes from the wax myrtle, a shrub that grows abundantly in the area. History records that a party of Spaniards from Hispaniola landed about 50 miles north of present-day Myrtle Beach in 1526 and eventually established the first European settlement in the U.S. about 30 miles to the south. The settlement, San Miguel de Cauldape, was abandoned

the following year, though, and the group returned to Hispaniola. In the next three centuries, the region’s population slowly grew. Landowners gradually developed large plantations in the area, with rice as the principal crop. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, people began to “vacation” here, although it was quite rustic. Houses and camps were sparse, and there were few permanent residents at the turn of the century. But, drawn by the ocean, sand and trees, people began to call Myrtle Beach “home” as the 1900s progressed. Today, Myrtle Beach is a well known destination for vacationers from around the country, Canada and abroad. According to the 2000 Census, the city is at the center of the 13th fastest growing metropolitan area in the U.S. It is also one of the golf capitals of the world, boasting over 100 golf courses within a 40-mile radius.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT Warren D. “Moose” Koegel is completing his ninth year as the Director of Athletics at Coastal Carolina University. Koegel, the Chanticleers’ fifth Athletic Director since 1986, was appointed on October 6, 2000. In Koegel’s years at the helm of the Coastal Carolina Athletic Department, the Chanticleers have flourished both on and off the fields of play. In his tenure to date, Coastal Carolina has been represented in NCAA Championships in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, baseball, women’s indoor track and field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. The Chanticleers also have won the prestigious George F. “Buddy”Sasser Cup five times, including their fourth consecutive award in 2006-07, awarded annually to the top athletic department in the Big South Conference. In addition to the work in their sport, Coastal Carolina’s almost 400 student-athletes combined for almost a 3.0 grade point average during the 2007-08 academic year. For his efforts, Koegel was named the 2008 NACDA Southeast Region Division I FCS Athletic Director of the Year. Coastal Carolina’s 17 current NCAA Division I sports continue to flourish, including the most recent addition to the Chanticleers’ athletic department — football. Football, which kicked off with the 2003 season and won its first Big South championship in 2004 in just its second year of play, competes at the NCAA Division I-Football Championship Subdivision level. Coastal Carolina completed construction on a 6,408-seat state-of-the-art stadium in 2003, which expanded by almost 1,000 seats for the 2006 season. A new athletic facility which will house the football program, as well as other parts of the department, is also slated for the near future. The new athletic facility will include an expanded weight room, training room, team meeting rooms, locker rooms for football, offices for all football coaches and staff, and several conference rooms. The facility will also become the new home for the Coastal Carolina University Buddy Sasser Athletic Hall of Fame. Koegel came to Coastal Carolina from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he had served as an associate athletic director from 1998-2000. At Chattanooga, Koegel helped manage a $5.2 million budget for 16 NCAA Division I sports. His other administrative responsibilities included business operations, athletic scholarships, marketing and serving as the liaison to the coaching staff. He also served on the steering committee for the NCAA I-AA National Championship Football Game. Prior to his stint at Chattanooga, he had served on the football coaching staffs at the University of Connecticut, Rutgers University and the University of Wyoming. During his tenure on the football coaching staff at the University of Connecticut from 1992 to 1997, he was recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach as well as interim head coach in 1993. Koegel was an assistant football coach at Rutgers University from 1984 to 1990 and Wyoming University from 1977 to 1983. Koegel played in the National Football League from 1971 to 1976, spending time with the Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Cardinals and New York Jets. He starred at Penn State University under legendary football coach Joe Paterno. He was co-captain of the Nittany Lions his senior season and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1971. During his college career, he was a Third Team All-American as a senior and played on two Orange Bowl champion teams. He also played in the Hula Bowl, East-West Shrine Game and the College All-State Game. Koegel received Penn State’s Dedicated Player and Outstanding Senior Awards. Koegel and his wife Elaine have one daughter, Kathryn.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years. Kallander has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf and had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection. The League also had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball

team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup

Coastal Carolina University won the prestigious George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup for a record-setting ninth time in 2006-07. The Sasser Cup, named for the former Coastal Carolina Athletic Director and Big South Commissioner, honors the top overall athletic department in the Big South Conference. The award is based on a point system, with points being awarded based upon each school’s finish in each of the 18 league-sponsored sports. T h e C h a n t i c l e e r s’ n i n e Sasser Cup awards are the most earned by one school in Big South history. Coastal won the 2006-07 award by capturing Big South titles in football, women’s indoor track, men’s golf, women’s tennis (tournament) and baseball (regular-season and tournament). In addition to the Big South honors, Coastal Carolina was represented in six different NCAA Championships.

BIG SOUTH 25TH Anniversary The Big South Celebrated it’s 25th annniversary in 2008. The conference unveiled the Top 25 “Best of the Best” Moments. The Big South honored these moments, as well as recognized other notable achievements that deserve applause, throughout the 2008-09 season. The Chanticleers made this list seven different times and had the most moments on the list. • 1986-1996 Radford Women’s Basketball – The Big South’s first dynasty in any sport was Radford’s Women’s Basketball Team. From 1986-1996, the Highlanders won nine Conference titles. They were the first program in Big South history to advance to postseason play with a berth in the Women’s NIT in 1989. • Dante Washington, Radford men’s soccer (1988-92) – One of the all-time great Big South soccer players, Washington was a FirstTeam All-American at Radford. He went on to become a U.S. Olympian and a Major League Soccer all-star. • 1987-1989 UNC Asheville Women’s Tennis – Led by three-time Big South Player of the Year Jenee Cross, UNC Asheville’s Women’s Tennis Team won back-to-back-to-back championships in the late 1980s. Cross did not lose a Conference match in three years. • Tony Dunkin, Coastal Carolina men’s basketball (1989-93) – His name says it all and he did it all for Coastal Carolina’s Men’s Basketball Team. In the early 1990s, Dunkin was a four-time Conference Player of the Year and is the only four-time League Player of the Year in NCAA history. • Ilona Fekete, UNC Asheville volleyball (1990-92) – Big South volleyball reached new heights in 1990 when Ilona Fekete led the nation in blocks. On the way to becoming the League’s first volleyball postseason participant in 1991, Fekete’s UNC Asheville Bulldogs went 29-2. • 1997-2006 Liberty Women’s Basketball – Starting in 1997, the Liberty Women’s Basketball Team set off on an amazing run – 10-straight Conference titles. In 2005, that run was capped off with a trip to the NCAA “Sweet Sixteen” where the Lady Flames knocked off national powers Penn State and DePaul. • Amber Campbell, Coastal Carolina women’s track & field (2000-04) – There may never be a more dominant Big South women’s track & field athlete than Amber Campbell. In her days at Coastal Carolina, she won 16 Big South championships and was a five-time NCAA All-American. Campbell then earned her way onto the 2008 U.S. Olympic Track & Field team.

• 2001-2008 Coastal Carolina Baseball – In 2001, Coastal Carolina’s baseball team got on the national map where it has stayed. With seven NCAA appearances in eight years, the Chanticleers are coming off of a 2008 season with a near trip to the College World Series. The program has posted 50 wins in three of the last four seasons.

• Dustin Johnson, Coastal Carolina men’s golf (2003-07) – At one time Dustin Johnson was the No. 1 college golfer in the country. A three-time All-American and Conference Player of the Year, Johnson went on to represent the United States in the 2007 Walker Cup and is now a rookie on the PGA Tour.

• 2002-2006 Winthrop Women’s Tennis – Good things started happening for Winthrop’s Women’s Tennis program in 2002. That was the first of five-straight Conference titles and NCAA appearances. In those five years, Winthrop won 49 consecutive Big South matches.

• Danny Gathings, High Point men’s basketball (2003-05) – In what may go down as one of the most gracious acts in Big South history, High Point All-American Danny Gathings awarded his 2004 Basketball Tournament MVP trophy to Liberty’s Larry Blair. Gathings felt Blair earned the award. With the gesture, the NCAA recognized Gathings as its Co-Sportsman of the Year.

• Katie Feenstra, Liberty women’s basketball (2002-05) – In her four years at Liberty, she was a three-time Big South Player of the Year and two-time All-American. Feenstra was also nominated for the Wade Trophy, the John Wooden Award and the Naismith Award. Today she plays for the Atlanta Dream of the WNBA.

• 2005 Charleston Southern Football – Charleston Southern’s journey to the 2005 Big South Football Championship was an emotional one. Predicted to finish last, the Bucs played the season with heavy hearts after the passing of receiver Eddie Gadson. The Buccaneers made an astonishing comeback to share the title in No. 21’s memory.

• Mary Hock (200205) and Winthrop Volleyball – Led by Mary Hock, Winthrop went on a volleyball championship run from 2002-06. In 2005, the Big South’s first volleyball All-American led the nation in aces as Winthrop advanced to the NCAA Tournament five years-in-a-row. • 2003 UNC Asheville Men’s Basketball – In 2003, UNC Asheville gave the Big South Conference its first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament win. Led by Andre Smith’s 28 points, including 10 in overtime, the Bulldogs knocked off Texas Southern. • 2003 Coastal Carolina Men’s Soccer and Joseph Ngwenya – In 2003, Coastal Carolina’s Men’s Soccer squad made a gallant run in the NCAA Tournament. Led by National Player of the Year Joseph Ngwenya, the Chanticleers knocked off Davidson and North Carolina to reach the “Sweet Sixteen.” During the regular-season they shut out 14 opponents.

• Josh McDougal, Liberty cross country/ track (2004-08) – When Josh McDougal runs nobody catches him. McDougal became the Big South’s second NCAA National Champion by winning the 2007 cross country title. With 14 career All-American honors, McDougal is the Big South’s most decorated runner. • Arizona Reid, High Point men’s basketball (2004-08) – High Point’s Arizona Reid was a milestone man. The two-time honorable mention All-American joined an elite NCAA class by scoring more than 2,000 points and grabbing 1,000 rebounds in his career. Reid is the only player in Big South history to accomplish this feat. • Reggie Williams, VMI men’s basketball (200408) – Scoring was the name of his game. VMI’s forward is just one of nine players in NCAA history to lead the nation in scoring in multiple years. He set Big South and VMI season and

33

career scoring records and finished with more than 2,500 points. • Martin Sayer, Radford men’s tennis (2005present) – On his way to being co-champion of the 2005 ITA Mideast Regional, Radford’s Martin Sayer knocked off four nationally-ranked opponents. Sayer has since followed that performance with three consecutive Conference Player of the Year awards and three-straight atlarge bids to the NCAA Singles Championship. • 2006 Coastal Carolina Football – 2006 was a landmark year for Big South football and Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers went 9-2 and undefeated in Conference play. That mark earned them the League’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Football Championship playoffs with a squad featuring four future NFL players. • 2006-07 Winthrop Men’s Basketball – In 2007, Winthrop and Big South men’s basketball reached its destiny. The Eagles netted the Conference’s first-ever national ranking and later dominated Notre Dame in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. • 2006-07 Coastal Carolina Men’s Golf – Coastal Carolina’s Men’s Golf program made its mark at the 2007 NCAA National Championship. The Chanticleers finished fifth nationally – the highest NCAA team finish in Big South history. • 2006-08 VMI Men’s Basketball – VMI’s Men’s Basketball Team put the fun in run and gun. The Keydets have led the nation in scoring two years running. In 2007, VMI averaged more than 100 points a game and broke five NCAA season records, including three-point field goals. The Keydets followed that up in 2008 by averaging more than 91 points per game. • Liberty’s Track & Field Programs and Heather Sagan – In 2002, Liberty’s Heather Sagan was the Big South’s first National Champion in winning the indoor mile run. Sagan’s victory is part of Liberty’s track & field dominance as the Flames have won 42 of the 52 Big South Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Conference Championships.
