CLEANING OUR OCEANS FOR A BETTER

TOMORROW

SUZUKI’S CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT If you’re going to claim to be “The Ultimate Outboard Motor,” you’d better do more than just build great engines. This is why, for the past 10 years, Suzuki has been committed to cleaning up the marine environment through voluntary “Clean Up The World” activities around the globe. Through the recently launched CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT, Suzuki Marine is committed to reducing the use of plastics in packaging materials to its consumers which has led to eliminating 2.3 tons of plastic waste annually. Suzuki is continually finding ways to reduce plastic waste while educating and informing the boating industry about this critical issue. This is only the beginning and Suzuki is pledging itself to the important cause of protecting our planet’s waters, coastal environments, and marine ecosystems for future generations to enjoy.

all in the frogmen! That’s what you say when a military mission calls for combat scuba divers and swimmers. Many countries have their own elite forces of frogmen, but the first modern frogmen were the Italian commando unit of Decima Flottiglia MAS. These men pioneered a new kind of war, and with it, new types of tools.

That’s when they created the cushion case, an iconic watch shape that mixes comfort with top-shelf mechanics. Known best for its square shape with rounded corners, the cushion case became a hallmark of the Frogmen of the Italian Navy. Inspired by this workhorse of a machine, we’ve crafted the Royal Cushion Watch, a watch that aims to cushion the blow from other, overpriced timepieces. Big, ultra-masculine, yet somehow refined, this historic case is a design with heritage and panache. Don’t believe us? Ask GQ. The publication’s UK edition recently wrote that “cushion-shaped watches are the hottest timepiece trend.” “Forget round,” it wrote. “Screw square. These watches are easy on the eye, but also on the wrist.” Water resistant up to 3 ATM, this rough-and-tumble watch features a precision movement, champagne dial, blue Breguet-style hands and markers and a date window at 6 o’clock. Usually a cushion case watch of this caliber would set you back thousands, but because Stauer designs and crafts its own timepieces, we can offer you the Royal Cushion without having to touch the royal coffers. This is a ridiculously good offer for a classic, handsome watch. Don’t get too comfortable — the first time we offered this watch, it SOLD OUT in TWO DAYS! Finally, our artisanal watchmakers have provided us with a few more. With only 1,581 637 in stock, you need to act fast before you’re sunk. Watch Specifications: • Precision movement that oscillates 32,768 times each second • Stainless steel crown and caseback • Black leather band. 44 mm case diameter • Water resistant to 3 ATM. Date window at 3 o’clock • Fits wrists to 8 1/2" Stauer Royal Cushion Watch $299 $49* + S&P *Special price only for customers using the offer code.

ost folks associate the word “gators” with big scaly reptiles or a college mascot. Mention gators to a cadre of hardcore inshore anglers and you are likely to elicit fond memories of 30-plus-inch silver flanks speckled with black spots and gaping yellow mouths sporting a wicked pair of canine teeth. I’m talking about seatrout, big trophy trout that prompt some of us to wake up at 4 a.m. so we can be on the water throwing topwater plugs at first light. Big trout don’t act like their smaller brethren, and the techniques that hammer schoolies won’t work on bigger fish. Most gator trout are caught on shallow grass flats 1 ½ to 3 feet deep. Look for flats with dense grass mixed with a few sandy potholes that big trout use to ambush prey. The flat should also have a healthy supply of bait like mullet or pinfish, and it should be close to deeper water, so a wary old trout has a short escape route. During the hottest days of summer, big trout retreat to deeper water off the edge of a flat or seek out shade under mangroves or docks. During the coldest nights of winter, gator trout move into deep channels, canals and dredge holes where they can be targeted with sinking plugs and shrimp imitations worked slowly along the bottom. Seatrout see well in low light, unlike their prey items, like mullet. So, big trout feed best during low light. It is best to

fish early mornings, late evenings, on overcast days and at night. It may seem counter intuitive, but more trophy trout are caught on artificials than bait. Big trout are loners. Lures allow you to cover a lot of water, increasing your odds of intercepting bigger fish. About 80 percent of an adult seatrout’s diet is fish. With that in mind, large mullet-imitating lures are a good choice. The classic gator trout lure is a topwater “walk-the-dog” bait like the venerable Zara Spook. Of course, big swimbaits and shallowrunning plugs also work, along with soft plastic shrimp. A seatrout doesn’t grow to trophy size by being stupid. Big trout are wary and will evacuate a flat at the slightest indication of danger. Hull slaps and pressure waves from a drifting boat put wise old trout on high alert. It’s best to ditch the skiff and either wade or fish from a minimally invasive vessel like a kayak. It also helps to make long casts to get your lure in front of a fish before it detects your presence. Catching a true gator seatrout is not easy, and even when you do everything right there is still an element of luck involved. When you finally catch that trophy fish, handle with care and release her gently. A mature female seatrout can release over a million eggs during a spawn. Let her go to release her big-fish DNA into the gene pool.

What is a Steel Cent?

When the United States entered World War II, copper quickly became a coveted material. Required for our communications as well as munitions, every major supply of copper needed to be turned over to the war effort. That included the large supply of copper used by the U.S. Mint to strike Lincoln Cents! The Lincoln Cent is the U.S. Mint’s longest-running series, sitting in the pockets and piggy banks of Americans for more than 100 years. But for one year only—1943—the Lincoln Cent was struck in steel-coated zinc instead of copper. This unique, historic mintage is now one of the most coveted in U.S. history!

WHAT A TRIGGERS THE BITE? PHOTO COURTESY OF KNOCKIN TAIL LURES

ction, color, profile, style, which is more important when fishing artificials inshore? I investigate this question more than the average fisherman does on each trip, because I manufacture lures. To prove my point, how many of you switch tactics or lures when the bite is hot? I do! Years ago, I would not change a thing while the bite was on. If I lost the last soft plastic of a particular color, I would dig through every compartment to find one more identical to what was working. I might even rig it upside-down or sideways to get that last soft plastic to stay on the hook for a few more bites. Designing and fine-tuning lures has driven me to fish differently and explore more frequently, even when the fish are biting. On a recent trip, I was trying a new design, even though I was more confident in one of my original designs for this scenario in these conditions. The bite was strong, I switched between two lures about every three fish just to see if there was a preference. I started with the new design in a green-back, clear-belly color and caught a fish on the first cast! I was feeling confident, since it was a new lure and a new color, but it took dozens of casts to catch a few more fish. I switched to my original design in a pearl color. Once again, fish on the first cast! It didn’t take long to land a few more, and I decided to switch back to the new design, only this time in the same pearl color. My intent was to see if color was what the fish were keying on. Although I caught fish on both lures, the original produced considerably more fish per cast. I kept switching to gain knowledge and validate my findings. Both lures were the same color and 5 inches long with very similar body size. The actions, however, were completely different. One was a paddle tail, while the other was a soft jerk- or twitch-bait style. The fish on this day undoubtedly preferred the erratic side-to-side action of the twitch bait. Although I attempted to work the swimbait more erratically, the paddle tail did not have the quick side-to-side action that triggered the strike. Both lures were rigged on the same weighted swimbait hook, and I used the same rod. In this scenario, the action and lure style were the keys to triggering the bite. Even if you’re catching fish, it is a good idea to change things up from time to time. The day before, in the same area, I caught an equal number of fish on both the abovementioned lures. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Knockin Tail Lures, Controlled Descent Lures, and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

ou won’t win many boat races with the Outfitter ZX from StyleCraft Boats, even with the proprietary fiberglass hulls and their racing design. These hulls move the pontoon boat to plane faster with better fuel efficiency and a smoother ride. This is just one of the features boaters love about StyleCraft Boats. The goal of any pontoon boat owner is fun on the water, another trademark of StyleCraft Boats. Owners of the Outfitter ZX can enjoy freshwater or saltwater outings without worry of boat deterioration. After all, there is no aluminum in these triton hulls and the wood-free 3/4-inch thick deck is made entirely of a composite material. For cruising to catch the breeze in the hair, turn to the Outfitter ZX. Comfortable seating, a tritoon design for the smoothest of rides and amenities like Bluetooth music create a great atmosphere for all, including the youngsters. Ride the water for a while then anchor at a swimming hole and jump in. The fold down ladder makes for a work-free re-entry onto the deck and the Bimini top keeps the sun off sensitive skin. The Suzuki 90 horsepower outboard provides the perfect speed for cruising. With a 150 horsepower Suzuki, the Outfitter ZX will pop the skier on the end of the rope right up. Straight runs, zig zags and arcing circles give skiers or tubers an entertaining ride while jumping wakes. The ski tow bar option transforms the Outfitter ZX from a cruiser to a skiing phenom

without taking up deck space. The new Outfitter ZX fishing version is still in design, but the regular Outfitter ZX can be transformed into a fishing machine with just a couple tweaks. A Humminbird Helix GPS fishfinder is standard on the Outfitter. With fishing chairs on the forward deck area, anglers have ample space to cast and catch. The shallow draft design of the pontoons allows the boat to maneuver in shallower conditions, taking anglers where the fish might be. Add the optional aerated live well, and fish can be kept alive. Stow some lawn chairs, extra ice chest and a grill on board and nose up to a nice sandy beach. It’s picnic time. Add a tent and sleeping bags, and the Outfitter ZX becomes an overnight on-the-beach hotel. The Outfitter ZX tritoon footprint starts at as a trailerable 8 1/2 feet wide and 20 feet long. For more floorspace and increased passenger capacity, there’s also an 8 ½-foot-wide and 24-foot-long deck model, which is also trailerable. Now the fun part starts, completing the layout for individual tastes and desires. Regardless of how you use your Outfitter ZX, you will look great on the water and you and your boat mates will have a whale of a time. Ask your favorite marina to offer the Outfitter ZX for your next rental. StyleCraft Boats are made in the USA in Alachua, Fla., and are available factory direct only. Have you ever noticed how the bite dies down after 10 or 11 in the morning? Have you ever noticed the days around a full moon are typically slow? These are not just a coincidence. Granted, the planner rod (aka “the meat stick”) is the one that produces in the middle of the day, and at daylight for that matter, and around the full moon, but I much prefer to catch these fish (any fish) on as light tackle as possible. I like to slow it down, and use the correct tackle for the job, while getting baits down in the strike zone.

While drifting or trolling, I like to use a jig when I need to get my baits down deeper where the mid-day fish are hanging out. A 4-ounce Squid Decoy Jig is a good option because it drifts and trolls well and can be fished with or without bait. Tipped with cigar minnow or sardine, the jig looks like a squid that has caught supper, and everything eats squid. This is a wahoo bait that can be fished with fluorocarbon instead of wire or cable, simply because almost all wahoo strikes on squid are intended to cut the back half the squid off before consumption. Predatory fish know that they can easily eliminate a squid’s only defenses… tentacles and a biting beak. A stinger hook in the head of a live or frozen cigar minnow or sardine will do the work. There is only one major problem with this setup. Don’t let it get too close to the bottom, or you’ll have a grouper or big snapper bite. I think we just got ’em on a technicality. If you are “trolling for wahoo” and let the bait get too close to the bottom and catch a grouper, oh well, I wasn’t using circle hooks. Just sayin’. an empty pail and hold it vertically on the surface of a pool, pond or tub of water, and you can easily recreate this for yourself. Apply force to the pail, straight downward, until its rim is just under the surface. Water rushes in to fill the pail until it has reached full capacity. If there are objects on the surface or suspended in the water, they will accompany the inrush of water. What you have done is introduced a void into the water. This empty space must be filled if water is to adhere to its own principles. Essentially, a vacuum effect occurs in which both water and the objects it contains are pulled into the void. Fish generate a similar vacuum via the expansion of their mouths, and anything within range of that vacuum will be drawn inside. This form of attack is concentrated in the fish’s head, requiring little or no forward motion of the body. If the fish wants to swallow what it has trapped in its jaws, it will expel the water through its gill slits in a rapid jet. Between a closed mouth and the fish’s gill rakers, solid objects are trapped inside, where they can be directed down the fish’s throat. If the fish should decide it doesn’t want to swallow what it has in its mouth, it will simply open its jaws and let the water float out along with whatever else was inside. It is much like a terrestrial animal opening its mouth and drawing in a big breath of air. Any airborne particulate matter will be taken in with the breath. If something noxious is taken in—smoke, for example—it can be ejected by exhaling or coughing. The difference between fish and terrestrial animals is the comparative enormity of most fish mouths and the great density of water compared to air. While a vacuum may be of little benefit to land animals, it is extremely useful to fish. Most fish, therefore, employ this technique to some degree in their feeding. For the sake of efficiency and the surer capture of prey, predatory fish are likely to use this method in conjunction with a more traditional attack featuring forward motion of the body. When employed together, these techniques allow the fish to draw its prey closer and seize it with the most By John Saporito security. ello and welcome to Pro Tips with Capt. Jonathan Moss. I hope you are staying strong with your New Year’s resolutions now that 2022 is in full swing. The 10 year challenge is a new trend that has become very popular on social media. If you are unfamiliar with it, it is simply posting two pictures side by side—one from 10 years ago and one from today. Most people are posting pictures of themselves (selfies) or a picture of themself and their significant other. But a recent post really struck a nerve with me. It was one that displayed the Mosquito Lagoon from 10 years ago and today (see photo below). The difference was quite drastic, and broke my heart. What was once a lagoon thriving with sea grass and large populations of fish is now a barren sand flat with the occasional small school of fish.

ORLANDO’S

REPOWER CENTER This year, as our “New Year, New Me” goals seem to fade away, let us commit to staying strong with our commitments to saving our lagoons! How can you help? I am so glad you asked! 1) BE A VOICE! Attend local government meetings that are focused on water quality issues. We have strength in numbers. A thousand people attending a meeting, all standing together for our waterways, will send a strong message to local officials. 2) SAY NO TO FERTILIZERS! Green lawns are a Florida staple. But there are several ways to maintain a healthy, green lawn without using harmful fertilizers that work their way to our waters and harm our estuaries. 3) PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT! I have written several times in the past about disposing of your trash when done with your day on the water. But let’s all commit to going the extra mile and picking up extra trash, not just our own. This does so much good and costs us nothing. Together we ALL can make a huge difference in saving our lagoons. It is something I am very passionate about, as these places were my childhood and I have every intention to share these waters with my own children. Tight lines,

PORT CANAVERAL/ BANANA RIVER LAGOON FORECAST BY CAPT. JIM ROSS PORT CANAVERAL: It’s anyone’s guess as to what the weather will be like this month, but if it follows the milder, warmer trend we have experienced over the past few years, anglers could hit the jackpot with a variety of great tasting species. On calm days, boaters need to look outside of the Ports basins in the near-shore waters for tripletail and cobia. Floating debris, weed lines, and slicks can often be found from the Canaveral Bight southward to Patrick Air Force Base if light easterly breezes are blowing. Look for these features within a few miles of the beaches. They can appear just about anywhere, but occur most often about 2 to 6-miles from shore. Cast medium or large live shrimp to the cobia or tripletail and it shouldn’t take long to get hooked up. Land based anglers will find whiting and pompano along the beaches. Sheepshead and black drum should also be found close to the entrance to the Port. Smaller live shrimp, pieces of shrimp, or cut clam are great choices for these fish. You can rig them on a small hook or jig head with good results. Bluefish and small jack are almost a given this month as well. Small Rapala Lures like the X-Rap (in size 10) can be extremely effective if you are looking for an action-packed day near the bulkheads and jetties. If the winds blow cold out of the north, most of these fish will move on to warmer waters to our

south. However, weakfish often replace these other species along the main shipping channel leading into the Ports Basins. Live shrimp on a jig head or lightly weighted rig will usually interest them as they suspend 10 to 15-feet above the bottom. We may also get a run of big black drum along the beaches if the water conditions are right for them. If so, you

harder, pulling them in, or holding them up for a picture.

BANANA RIVER LAGOON: This portion of the lagoon has been troubled with horrible water quality and even periodic fish kills over the past few years due to rampant pollution caused by residential lawn fertilizer application that gets washed into the lagoon when it rains. This year we have experienced a slight reprieve from these conditions due to drought conditions over the 5 to 6 months. This is great news because the water quality in the Banana Lagoon overall is much better this year without these pollutants being introduced by the rainwater runoff. With better water quality we are seeing a few species that are making a comeback. My charter customers have been catching juvenile speckled trout and redfish for the first time in a number of years. This is great sign! It shows that with good water quality and reduced pollutant input, these two species are finally spawning in the Banana River again. As a result, residents of Merritt Island, Satellite Beach, and Cocoa Beach can finally catch fish off of their docks and seawalls again. This is the reason that most waterfront owners bought their homes in the first place. To enjoy the outdoors. A pat on the back goes out to every home owner that has reduced or eliminated their lawn fertilizer use in these areas. Let’s hope this sentiment continues to grow and spread so that we all can enjoy less polluted waters for year to come.

can bet that I’ll be out there chasing them with my charter clients. These fish pull like a bulldozer and are a real trophy if landed. I’m not sure which is

ind wind and more wind, go away already! Nearshore fishing has been great and should continue this month. Massive schools of redfish have been near the port and around the tip of the cape. Look for the birds diving as it’s a good chance that they’re on them. There have been large bunker schools around, so take the time and look. They may not be flipping, so watch your machine and the mudd balls. The reds will eat anything you throw in the school—buck tails, bunker, and I’m sure even a hotdog. They’re all big and upwards of 35 pounds! Shark fishing has been on fire as well. Large blacktips, hammerhead and blacknose have been plentiful. A bunch of bulls too. This time last year the big, extinct sandbar sharks moved in so we are hoping they do the same thing. They are a blast to catch in shallow water. Many of my offshore trips turned into port trips and beach trips if we were Fun group of guys had a fantastic time catching over 40 reds, spinners, black tips, fine tooths and black nose sharks aboard the Fire Fight with Capt Joe.

lucky with a west wind. If you want to catch a bunch of stuff and keep the kids happy, get a few dozen live shrimp and have fun. The way we do our beach fishing is with medium rods and light tackle while using a 1/0 circle hook with a #20 leader to a small swivel then mainline. On the mainline, use a 1 or 1.5 oz egg sinker. This is the typical fish finder rig; works great and is very basic. Everything eats a shrimp. Offshore, on the days we can get out, have been great, but this is also the time of year that the kings are picky. If they don’t have a live bunker or threadfin flashed in front of their face they wont eat. You will literally watch everyone around you get hooked up, but they will not touch a dead spinning minnow. You really have to put the effort in right now to catch the live baits. Last February was the best long run we had last year as we caught tons of fish—many of them giants. It was even better than March. Take advantage of this February’s sunny days and go look around. 55-foot depths seem to be the most productive this time of year. Patrick has always been a productive area. The rays are showing up! Have a great month and good luck.

anuary turned out to be a warm month with water temps warmer than normal and the action off the beach has been good, while the inlet bite has been hit or miss for redfish and snook. However, the flounder bite has been better this year than in the past few years. Doc’s Goofy jigs will normally work well in the inlet and along the beaches and flats of the lagoon from Sebastian to Melbourne for pompano, and bycatch will be a mix of jacks, bluefish, trout and Spanish mackerel as well as a few big gafftopsail cats. We have also caught a few pompano lately on the Rapala Twitchin’ Minnow, as well as fishing the bait pods we can find for trout and snook. If you are fishing Sebastian Inlet and the pompano action is slow, you can try jigging the shallow parts of the inlet for flounder using a ½ ounce jighead with a D.O.A. Paddletail or Curly Tail with Pro-Cure.

If the weather stays warms up, the snook and redfish bite in the inlet should get better. Live bait is the key in the daytime, and at night artificials perform. Bucktail Jigs work well and the Rapala X-Rap 14 and the Long Cast 14 are great plugs to fish from the jetties and the rocks along the west side of the bridge. The tarpon will continue to feed on outgoing tides through February during the strong cold fronts and the above lures will Mitchell with work, as well as Hogy a nice beach Eels and Paddletails redfish! and D.O.A. Baitbusters. If you can get out on the beach, you can jig for pompano, mackerel, jacks and bluefish. Following those species in February and March are blacktip sharks. You can have some great action fishing live bait or even topwater baits for blacktips that are mixed in and feeding on the mackerel and blues. Keep an eye out for manta rays and if you find them, the cobia should be tagging along. Most live baits and

bucktails work well for the cobia. The big jacks, sail cats and a few tarpon are up in the Sebastian River as well as Turkey Creek in Palm Bay and Crane Creek in Melbourne. Snook are around the docks and tarpon are far back in the creeks. Live bait is best, but the fish will eat soft plastics and some topwater on warmer days. Bundle up and stay warm as there should be plenty of action throughout the month of February for anglers looking to get out of the house on the nice days.

SURF FISHING FORECAST F

BY CAPT. LUKAS BRICKWEG

ebruary has always been one of my favorite times of year to hit the beach for surf fishing. Species like pompano, black drum, sheepshead, whiting and mackerel are sure to make their presence known. Weather and water temperatures will dictate what kind of month it shapes up to be. This year we are having unusually warm extended periods, so look for a cool down to get the water temperatures back down so things get fired off. Trophy-sized black drum will be one of the species we chase on our beach fishing charters

in the month of February. These fish can reach upwards of 4060 lbs. and make for quite the tug-of-war battle fishing from the shore. Commonly caught while targeting pompano in the surf, these big drum are sure to surprise you with a relentless determination to not want to give in. Pompano rigs with clams, fresh dead shrimp or sandfleas will be the ideal baits to hookup with

the giant drum or the smaller puppy drum. Pompano fishing looks to stay consistent into February as the water temperatures should keep schooling fish nearby, as well as the residential pompano. These top rated species are a favorite—by far—on our surf fishing charters, where clients love to catch a delicious and hard fighting fish. There’s nothing that gets the heart racing like seeing a large pompano bend the rod with a blitzing strike. Hopefully the sandfleas return as they have been challenging to find this year yet continue to be one of my favorite baits for catching pompano in the surf. Finally, during our surf fishing charters we’ll rely on a predictable whiting bite that takes place consistently during the month of February. Most of the whiting can be upwards of 1 lb. this time of year and make for a really tasty fish fry. Use pompano rigs with beads and floats depending on the conditions to dial in on the whiting. Fishbites hooked up with sandfleas and shrimp do extremely well for whiting fishing on the Space Coast. In between the pompano, whiting and drum, the mackerel, sheepshead and blues will keep you steady reeling as this month tends to have lots of life in the water. So get out there and hit the beach to enjoy a cherished Florida winter sport that is surf fishing.

ESCAPE. IT’S CLOSER THAN YOU THINK By Rex Hannon

T

he mortgage is due. Your children have practice after school. Your employer just informed you that mandatory overtime is on the horizon. There are countless reasons in today’s world why you lost track of who you were or why you stopped doing the things you enjoy. It’s the same story around the world. The lack of excess time and the demands of everyday life have robbed us of that part of life that often keeps us healthy and happy. But, if you’re an angler and live in the State of Florida, I just may have some ideas for you to get back on the water, even with the time restraints. Florida is surrounded by water. The Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon on the East Coast, and the Gulf of Mexico on the West. There are also many rivers and streams that crisscross the state. But, what if I told you there are some of the most productive waters right there in your neighborhood and often in your own backyard? The canals, water filtration systems, and the countless man-made lakes and ponds dot the landscape in every region of Florida are waiting to be explored. I live in the Central Florida area and, like most places in the state, there are canals, ponds on golf courses and at housing developments, along with water treatment lakes that are full of a wide variety of species that are just waiting for the angler. I can tell you that regardless of where you live in this area, you could be fishing productive waters in just a matter of minutes. Some of my favorite locations are closer to my home than the local convenience store. The best part is that I have the vast majority of these places all to myself. I can spend a few minutes or several hours catching fish and never see another person. The solitude helps unwind and recharge. It brings me back to being that person I lost along the way. The species found in these locations will often surprise the novice angler. I have caught largemouth bass on one cast and a snook on the next. The snook and the tarpon can call these brackish/freshwater systems home. These saltwater species have evolved to tolerate places that many would never consider possible. These species are not only surviving; they are thriving. I have caught countless juvenile examples that

prove they were born there which is an indication of a healthy environment. I often frequent these places when the weather makes fishing the larger water systems impossible. With so many locations available, you can always find a place to escape the unfavorable elements. Another attractive aspect of these water systems is the opportunity to now catch species that were once only accessible after a costly trip to a faraway country. The peacock bass has been on the “Bucket List” of many fishermen throughout the world. I personally know several anglers that made pilgrimages to the Amazon just to have the opportunity to catch one of these colorful warriors and now we have them within a short drive from our homes. I have caught beautiful examples on Lake Ida in Del Ray Beach and there are good numbers to be found in the canal system of Palm Beach County. These locations are also known to be home to another exotic that have anglers haunting these waters; the clown knifefish. This tropical species is native to countries like Thailand and Indochina and were likely introduced to American waters after being

released from pet aquariums. The state of Florida is the only known state to house this species and even here it is limited to the Southeast Region, primarily in Lake Osborne, Lake Ida and all associated canal systems in the Del Ray Beach area. There are still other invasive/exotic species that call these waters home such as the snakehead (native to Africa and Asia), Mayan Cichlids that originally came from Mexico and Central America, and other numerous species are waiting for your angling pursuits. These locations can often be scouted in your home areas without ever leaving the easy chair. Google Earth is a tool that can be used to plan your next adventure. It’s surprisingly accurate and simple to use, even for those like me that are less than a professional in computer knowledge. I have also found that if you ask those that live near these systems, they’ll be more than happy to share their knowledge or experiences. I found some of my prime spots just by asking a few simple questions of the residents. If you haven’t fished in a long time, I hope these words of encouragement help you get you back out there and you find a special place that lets you escape the hustle of everyday life. There is a great big, beautiful world out there. Take a few minutes and explore. Your next adventure can be a lot closer than you thought possible.

ST. JOHNS RIVER FORECAST N

BY CHARLIE McCULLOUGH

ow is the time for huge bass as the spawn is on! Shallow beds during full and new moon phases will produce the biggest bass of all year. Catch, photo and release these large female fish for the reproductive cycle to complete. The largest bass are lazy and will eat larger baits; big wild shiners, although expensive, are the absolute best bait for a trophy fish. Large wild shiners in pre-spawn areas (not more than 500 feet from the beds) can yield the monster you’re looking for. When throwing artificial, try using baits that mimic predators of fish eggs, namely lizards, shiners and bream. Lipless rattle-trap-style crank baits, soft-plastic lizards, and shallow surface lures like a Devil’s Horse work great. Speckled perch (crappie) are feasting every chance they get during the spawn. Minnows are plentiful in the river system and grass shrimp round out their diet. Jigs tipped with minnows trolled along channel edges is a sure bet. Watch your depth recorder in the river bends while trolling and you will learn to see them before they strike the lures. Crappie spawn in colonies and bunch up; locate them and troll many passes for a bucketful of good eating. Florida crappie limit is 25 per person. Shad are in full swing so go get them while they last. Small 1.5” tandem shad darts with a trailer spoon trolled against the current at 1.5 to 2.0 mph should get a strike in shad alley, between Mullet Lake Park south all the way to Puzzle Lake. Finally, the 13th Annual Shad and Crappie Derby ends February 28 at sunset. Hurry, there is still time to win! Visit www.coastalanglermag.com/ orlando to learn how to register.

ven if you take precautionary steps to avoid it, sometimes you might hook a bird by accident. That’s when it’s important to remember — don’t cut the line and let the bird fly away with it attached. This will lead to entanglement, resulting in death of that bird and possibly others as well. Instead, follow these simple steps to unhook the bird: Reel. Remove. Release.

How else can you help a seabird or wading bird?

1. Wear safety glasses and enlist a partner for help. 2. Reel the bird in slowly and lift it from the water using a hoop net. Even a large pelican weighs only 4-8 pounds 3. Grasp the bird by the head just behind the eyes and fold the wings against the body. For pelicans, hold the beak, keeping the mouth slightly open so it can breathe. Cover the bird’s head with a cloth to keep it calm. 4. Never pull the hook out but carefully push the end through the skin, cut off the barb and back the hook out using pliers or clippers. If the bird is entangled, remove all line. 5. Release the bird (if healthy) by placing it on the ground near the water and allowing it to take off. 6. If the bird has swallowed the hook or is severely injured, contact a local wildlife rehabilitator from the list at MyFWC.com/unhook.

1. Don’t feed the birds, which teaches them to approach where they are more likely to be hooked. 2. Dispose of filleted bones where birds can’t get them—in a trash can with lid or at home. Bones of a filleted fish will become lodged in or tear throats, stomachs and intestines leading to the death of that bird . 3. Cover bait buckets and take unused bait home. 4. Dispose of fishing line in a monofilament recycling bin or cut into small pieces and place in the trash. 5. Don’t leave your line unattended. 6. Cast carefully to avoid hooking a bird in flight or being snared on trees, bridge pilings etc. 7. Help others learn what to do when they accidentally hook a bird. It’s pretty easy, once you know how. 8. Sponsored by Friends of the Pelicans, Inc. More detailed information can be found at facebook.com/ friendsofthepelicans. — Photos by Carol Cassels

S

o, I’m sitting here casting. I start to cast the line out as far as I can throw it, trying to cast a mile. I watch an osprey, forty feet in front of me, dive in front of the wave, come up with a giant pompano, and fly away. The best fishermen on the beach. I ain’t no fool, so I start to cast short, and holy mackerel! - I mean, pompano! - They start to hit. We’re in the game. They’re right in front of me, the pompano pastures of plenty. Off ’n’ off and by and by, I’m getting a couple using crab knuckles, but I’ve been getting a lot of bonnet head sharks also. The major herd of pompano headed south in migration, the commercial fellas following in hot pursuit all the way down past Melbourne Beach, we sit up here catching the ones that were trapped or that live in the river and come out to feed. My old friend Larry Finch the fish man says that, “Fish got to eat just like people.“ Let’s move on to a few days later: Guess what? The fish are hungry! We’re out on a low tide and the bite is on! Ya, mon! It’s been like that: Spotty but good fishing. The weather this winter has been amazing. It has kept the ocean water around 68°. Pompano just love it, and they’ll stay around longer. Ah, yes! The reggae beat is on. As Peter Tosh used to say, “Don’t criticize it .” We are grilling up some fish tacos, I got the Red Stripe going, these fish are headed for the smoker, and so am I. — Marcopompano@gmail.com | Surf Fishing Guide

have been fishing the Brevard County Surf for a couple years and have caught lots of different species but one of the fish that I haven’t had much luck with was the Florida Pompano. Me and my Grandpa set out to find more about the fish we were after. After researching the internet, we learned their eating and migration habits. We found that they are constantly on the move looking for the water temp that they prefer and searching for food. Although a few can be found in the surf year around they prefer the cooler water from 68-75 degrees which concentrates them into a spring and fall migration. I found that the sandflea was the bait of choice tipped with a chunk of orange and white fish bites. We ordered do it yourself kits for pompano rigs off the internet and tied our own using orange/white and chartreuse/white floats on the rigs. I also ordered a sandflea rake to catch our own bait in the surf. This spring we watched the water temps and when weather they were prime, we headed to the beach to try and apply the knowledge we had recently compiled. We set up our rigs at daybreak and casted each at different distances and waited. After about 30 minutes I had my first Pompano on, it came from the closest casted rod in the first trough. We immediately reeled in the other rods and casted back into the same trough. It was non-stop action for the next hour and the four of us had limited out. One thing that was noticed, if you lost the orange and white fish bite from one of your hooks, the action would slow down on that rod until you added it back. I feel like the color flashing around in the surf helps draw their attention to the bait. Pompano’s have now become one of my favorite fish to target in the Surf, and did I mention that they are great to eat. Remember that Pompanos prefer clearer water, so if the surf is rough you may have to fish beyond the breakers. So get out to the beach and use this technique and catch your dinner for tonight, enjoy what Florida has to offer. “Tight Lines and Bent Rods” — Olivia

ny day of fishing is fun but sometimes a fishing trip can become an experience that you will never forget. I was with my husband Bill and his brother Ross enjoying a great day of fishing in Islamorada. We had spent most of the morning trolling for mahi and had a few nice bulls in the fish locker. At this point, anything more was a bonus. Then the reel went zing! My turn to bring the fish in so I grabbed the rod and went to work. The guys were busy bringing in the other lines so I just fought along with my fish... then it jumped! I was the only one that saw it jump and I remember thinking it looked like a sailfish! But it wasn’t even that time of year so it couldn’t be right? I said nothing, just kept reeling. Another jump... now there was no question. I had hooked on to my first sailfish ever! We all celebrated when I finally got it in the boat. We released it to fight another day and now I have this on my wall to remind me of my favorite fishing trip. — Pat 16 BREVARD/VOLUSIA

e cleared the inlet just before the sun broke the horizon, headed for a day of offshore trolling. The ocean was one to two foot. We figured it would be a nice, relatively smooth ride out. The captain, his wife, my wife and myself had done this numerous times, and were hyped it was such a beautiful day. About a half mile offshore the captain thought he heard a hiccup in the motor. He idled down and was checking some connections. Off to our port side I saw a huge school of bait fish so I grabbed a bait caster with a top water plug. As I was casting, before the plug landed, the water exploded with action. Something else had found the school and was starting a feeding frenzy. When my plug landed it was instantly hit. It was a nice Spanish Mackerel. Everyone else on board grabbed their lightweight polls. We were all getting hit. The mackerel were going nuts. One hit a top water and knocked it about three feet out of the water close to the boat. Before it could land a mackerel skied and grabbed it in midair. After ten minutes or so the action completely ceased. The bait pod had moved on. A few hundred feet away we saw another bait pod and eased over to it. Same result. Nonstop action for five or ten minutes. Spanish with a few Cobia mixed in. We released everything as we were just having a blast enjoying the action. We considered chasing the bait pods a while longer, but decided to go back to plan A and head offshore. As we were cruising out, and the adrenaline was wearing off, somebody said, “I hope one of you took some pictures.” Oops. One of our most exciting half hours of fishing together and we didn’t have one photo. — Ken

e were all set to fish for big Yellowfin Tuna and the possibility of Marlin. Reservations for our rental home in the Berry Islands, on nearby Great Harbour, were made a year in advance. Then, a week before our departure we got the dreaded call, “Covid has bloomed and the government has closed our island from guests”. The unthinkable happened! One week is not ideal when trying to find lodging for boaters in the

Bahamas... especially a family of 12! But we all went to work. We ended up switching from the Berry islands to the Abacos. Not ideal for hunting the large Tuna we’d been dreaming of catching. Boy what a surprise we learned. We had to rent 2 houses. Green Turtle welcomed us with open arms. Our fishing changed from hook to spear. We hit the reefs near Spanish Cay, inside the Sea of Abaco. And, best of all, even the small children could join us. — Ross

ebruary is one of the chilliest months for us here in the area but that doesn’t mean the fish won’t be eating. I love stocking up on sheepshead this time of the year as they typically bite the best when it gets chilly out. Use short leader, sharp J hooks or Jig heads tipped with sand fleas or fiddler crabs and you should have a fish fry by the end of the day. If you can’t get the fleas or fiddler crabs shrimp will also work along with scented artificial baits like fish bites or gulp. I would focus on structure like the bridges , docks , and on the right days the inlet. While your focusing on the sheepshead also try your luck with black drum as they tend to be in the same areas. In my opinion these are also one of the tastier fish to eat and a big one will certainly put a smile on your face! I do best with these guys with halved live blue crabs on a bottom rigged with a #3 or #4 circle hook. I’ve also scored my fare share of big ones

on select shrimp but the key to big black drum is being on the bottom! I also do decent on trout in these winter months , floating a shrimp on a popping cork is usually my go to in deeper cuts and channels back in the mangroves. This is also a great way to hide from the north winds which we have to deal with most of the month. Keep an eye out for spanish mackerel breaking the surface, almost always have a rod rigged in February with something shiny like a gotcha plug. Casting will produce strikes but a couple of passes on a slow troll will also get you hooked up! Get out there and catch some fish and as always if you see us on the water make sure to say hello !! — Capt. WANT TO GO FISHING WITH THAT GUY!!!” This is what local youth angler Michael said when he saw Capt. Evan’s wrapped Toyota “Tundra. Capt. Evan happened to see and hear Michael say this and went over to introduce himself. After talking with Michael and learning that he loved to fish Capt. Evan exchanged info with his parents and sent a surprise package in the mail to Michael including some swag and a note asking him to go fishing with him! Michael was so excited to receive the package and quickly responded “YES!” to the invitation. On the coldest morning of the month, Michael and his father met Capt. Evan at the boat ramp for the fishing trip. Adjustments had to be made due to rough seas offshore which did not allow Capt. Evan to take Michael to catch and tag sharks. They switched gears and targeted sheepshead at the North Causeway! After getting set up, one of the very first fish caught was Michaels personal best with a 17 inch sheepshead. Michael hooked this big sheepshead by using a fiddler crab on a bottom sweeper jig. As soon as he set the hook, and the fish started pulling drag, Michael knew it was going to be a big fish! Be sure and be on the lookout for the next Captain and the Kids edition in next months issue! — Capt. Evan Sanders | Sol Fishing

s always February is a tough month to predict for fishing due to the fronts that pass-through and the possibility of cold water. These variables can happen from one day to the next so the key is to be prepared to fish any scenario. Warm water would be in the low 70s and cold water can be as low as the 40s. The warm water has a tendency to attract the pompano to enter the river system and the Tomoka basin is www.USHarbors.com a good staging area. By Capt. Quinlyn Haddon

Fishing the bay side may not even be a second choice this month, with the abundance of cobia, snapper, mackerel and the other usual suspects that frequent our shallow-water wrecks. However, if the weather allows, fishing the Atlantic side is advisable. Snapper and amberjack are a viable option, while being near an excellent pelagic fishery. Wahoo and king mackerel will be cruising the reef, along with sailfish, tuna and the occasional mahi. Mahi may be few and far between in February, but they will likely be much larger than summer schoolies. On the reef, incredible tailing conditions occur this time of year, which pushes migrating species to the surface. Once in a lifetime sightings can be had, but the most notable species affected by this anomaly is sailfish. On days like these, we target sailfish by cruising waves along the reef and looking for fish swimming on the surface. Sailfish appear black in the water, and on sunny days you can see them several waves ahead, leaving ample time to set up a pitch bait for sight casting. In the beginning of winter, when sailfish season begins on the reef, ballyhoo are extremely abundant, and the challenge is to get the fish to choose your bait out of the rest. This time of year, when bait is more scarce, your bug-eyed, red-nosed bait might actually have a chance at coming across as appealing to these hungry travelers. Tailing conditions in Marathon are caused by an east wind that opposes the current of the Gulf Stream. Migrating fish are traveling against the current, and heavy wind creates waves that push in the direction they are going. By swimming on the surface, to the point where their tails even breach, they use the force of the wind to surf the waves. It gives them a little break. It is a breathtaking experience to see these fish with such clarity, as if they are in a rolling aquarium. For obvious reasons, this type of fishing requires some heart to brave the he coldest month of the year may shut off a lot of fisheries around waves, and possibly some Dramamine. If you are prone to seasickness, take the country, but the Florida Keys thrive throughout the month of Dramamine the night before. This allows time for it to get into your system February. and eliminates the uncomfortable drowsiness that occurs from taking it the While the Keys are not immune to seasonal cold fronts, the temperatures morning of your trip. remain significantly higher than the rest of the country and provide the Capt. move up to spawn. For most of the country, a transition area can be anything from deeper water with structure, points, or even deep banks leading near the spawning grounds. Here in Florida, we look for submerged grass clumps or edges, brushpiles, and even shell bars in a bit deeper water near spawning areas. This habitat provides bass with an ambush point to feed heavily and an easy route to spawning grounds when they are ready. Side scan is very helpful in for finding these things, as you can see the bottom 150 feet or more on each side of your boat at idle speeds. This allows you to cover a ton of water and eliminate a lot of the guesswork. With some trial and error, you can actually see fish with this technology as well! I know this technology is expensive and takes some time to learn and understand. However, if you can get your hands on it and learn how to us it, your understanding of where these fish move, live, and feed will grow exponentially. The best way to learn is to get out on the water and find that special area for yourself. Cool Water, Hot Surf Fishing

F

ebruary is one of the coolest months for surf fishing, and it’s one of the best for cool-water fish. Mackerel, jack, bluefish and ladyfish are coolwater fish that are very active this month. February is also one of the best months for table fare like large pompano, whiting and croaker. The schooling predator fish mentioned above are active chasing bait in the morning around daybreak and in the evening. They are shallow in the morning around the first breakers and running the trough, a deep cut along the shoreline under the closest breakers. Any shiny, fast-moving lure will produce strikes. I prefer small crocodile-style spoons (1-ounce) in the morning, a shallow-running crankbait, if there are no weeds, or small jigs (4-inch pearl white with a 3/8-ounce chartreuse jig head). Schooling mackerel and bluefish will cut your line, so use a heavy 40-pound mono or fluoro leader tied onto braid. Whether it’s early morning or not, you need to find bait to be successful. Look for birds feeding. On any beach, there will usually be some schools of bait. They might be 100 yards away or a half a mile. Walk the beach and look for dark spots in the water and small splashes on top. Although birds will be feeding on large schools of bait, they may not see smaller schools. Make long search casts past the bait and use a fast, steady retrieve to pull the lure through the bait. The action can be fast and furious as long as you are around bait and feeding fish. All the cool-water predator fish will take live bait and cut bait. Greenies and live shrimp work as well as cut ladyfish and frozen shrimp. If it gets cold, try beach fishing with waders. Numbers of pompano have been reported along many of the beach accesses in the Treasure Coast area, including Bathtub Beach and Middle Cove up to the Ft. Pierce Inlet. February is one of the best months for large 3- to 5-pound pompano. Pompano beach fishing is an art in itself and requires longer fishing rods as well as triple rigs baited with sand fleas or FishBites (red or pink). One of the easiest ways to catch pompano is to fish the lagoon bridges (Jensen Beach Causeway/Stuart Bridge if you are in Martin county) with pompano jigs (pink) on moving tides. The whiting bite has been very good this winter with small pieces of frozen shrimp. Cast just past the shoreline breakers. When fishing live or cut bait on the beach, make sure you reel in pompano or whiting fast or your fish might be shark bait. The best table-fare beaches have deeper water. The best times are when high tide is moving in or out. The weeds have been much better on the beach and the water is clear. Richard Matteson is a long-time contributor to Coastal Angler Magazine who reports from the Stuart Rod and Reel Club. Contact him at (336) 414-3440.

CATCH SMALLMOUTHS IN THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTH CAROLINA

H

By Capt. James McManus

ere in the western North Carolina mountains, we get a lot of visitors. Snowbirds are what we call people who come here from up north to enjoy our milder climate. One snowbird most fishermen cherish is the smallmouth bass. We are at the southern end of their natural range, and almost all of our watersheds contain some. Smallies have characteristics that endear them to anglers. They are aggressive, eat year-round, grow to respectable size and when hooked spend as much time out of the water as in.

You can find these beauties in most of our sizeable rivers. River fish seem to be more active in summer. I think it’s linked to terrestrial food items being more available. Floating area rivers like the Tuckasegee, Little Tennessee, Hiwassee and French Broad will keep you in fish regardless of your preferred method. For fly guys, any minnow or crawdad imitation will draw strikes, and in warmer weather nymphs and hoppers get their attention. Poppers and sliders can be lots of fun, just remember river smallies tend to be smaller than their lake buds. I spend more time chasing lake fish. There is less competition from other anglers, and average size is much better. Winter and early spring are the best seasons, in my opinion, only because the females are chock-full of eggs. It is when we catch our largest fish of the year. Many methods produce, and I throw a lot of jigs and jerkbaits. Lake fish have a variety of forage, so anything resembling threadfin shad, blueback herring or crawdads fits their menu. Dropshot, Shaky head and wacky-rigged worms all catch fish. Average depth for smallies year-round is 45 feet, or so. However, our clear mountain lakes allow them to identify prey up on the surface. Don’t shy from throwing topwater just because you mark fish deep. Especially when they are feeding up pre- and postspawn, you’ll find smallmouths on rock or gravel, where they love to eat little lobsters. They also suspend in open water to chase shad, but this is more of a warm-water behavior. On Lake Fontana, my home lake, we troll a good bit, and it’s not unusual to find them suspended at 45 feet over 200 feet of water. I should note that while we still have good smallmouth fishing, invasive spotted bass have forced their way into smallie enclaves. For this reason, we never kill a smallmouth. If you like to eat fish, take all the spotted bass you want; they are better eating anyway. Smallies and spots use the same spawning areas and hybridize. While not good genetically, it produces a fish that has that hybrid vigor, hence the name “meanmouth.” Markings and coloration make the smallmouth one of the prettiest of all fish. We should try hard to preserve them so our kids have the thrill of fighting one of the gamest fish around. Captain James McManus owns 153 charters out of Sylva, N.C. Call him at (828) 421-8125. C-HAWK & MITZI SKIFF: DEPENDABLE SIMPLICITY

T

here’s a certain type of boater who values simplicity and functionality over flashiness. Most anglers fall into this category. A simple boat comes with less hassle, allowing you to spend more time on the water. Two brands that fit right into this niche for dependability and easy boating are C-Hawk and Mitzi Skiff. Across the product lines for both boats, a no-nonsense reputation has developed a considerable following among people who would rather fish than look at their boats. No trailer queens here! “We build a keep-it-simple-stupid boat. If you want something you can soft scrub at the end of the day and put it away, you’re my guy,” said Brad Grubbs, the owner and manufacturer of C-Hawk and Mitzi Skiff. “We set out to make boats that are affordable to operate and affordable to own, and the philosophy has worked.” C-Hawk, which has been around since the mid-1970s, offers lines of 16’ to 29’ center consoles and 22’ to 29’ sport cabins that were originallyw developed for commercial applications. C-Hawks remain widely used commercially, and many recreational boaters also see the value in a vessel

H that’s built to take a beating. “Really, we just took a commercial-duty boat and put a little lipstick on it,” Grubbs said. “The boat is as tough as it ever was. It’s been the same boat for nearly 50 years.” Mitzi Skiffs were designed for a specific purpose, yet the same philosophy applies. When the first Mitzi was designed in the mid-1990s, the concept was simple. There was nothing on the market with the shallow draft, clean layout and quiet maneuverability needed for fly fishing the flats. Those ideas propel the company today. Almost 30 years later, Mitzi’s line of 15’, 16’ and 17’ skiffs achieve those purposes exceptionally well, and they are inexpensive to own and operate. With the original design and continuing innovation, Mitzi Skiffs are flats boats other boat builders imitate. C-Hawk and Mitzi Skiff boats are available exclusively through select dealers. Contact your local dealer to find out how they can be rigged out to fit your style of fishing.

WHEN FISHING SHALLOWS, YOU NEED A REEL WITH A REPUTATION THAT RUNS DEEP.

Packed with more fish stopping features than ever before, the PENN ® Slammer ® IV takes a tradition of excellence to a whole new level. An 8+1 sealed stainless steel bearing system with Hydrophobic Line Roller Bearing makes the reel as smooth as it is tough. The Slammer IV drag system was upgraded to provide wider range. And the reel body and spool are now even more perfectly sealed. Just like the fate of the fish. PENN. LET THE BATTLE BEGIN.
