else, here are a few tips to help you hook and land more tripletail. • Cruise Carefully: Floating at the surface and doing its best to imitate a garbage bag, a tripletail is easy to spot once you develop an eye for it. Run a trap line on plane with a dedicated spotter and you can cover water quickly to locate “trips.” However, you’ll put fish down if you wake them too hard. Stay at least 30 feet off a trap line or channel markers while prospecting. When you spot a fish, give it a few minutes to settle and come back to the surface while you bring the boat around to approach with the trolling motor. A tripletail at ease on the surface is an easy fish to target. • Consider Your Eyewear: Obviously, polarized glasses are a must when sight fishing anything. The color of your lenses matters, too. It’s worth investing in a couple of good pairs so you can switch out according to conditions. Gray or blue works best in clear water. In dingy water, go with copper or rose lenses. • Stay Rigged and Ready: If you’re targeting trout, redfish or whatever, keep a tripletail rig on hand and keep an eye out for them when you’re running to a new spot. A good basic rig is a popping cork with a short 20-pound fluorocarbon leader of a foot or less and a 2/0 circle hook. Live shrimp is best, but if you’re fishing artificials, a DOA shrimp or a Gulp! shrimp or crab will also work. • On Approach: Come at your quarry from down-current and cast well past it so that your bait drifts back in front of its nose. If that cork starts to dance, give it a few seconds before coming tight. Tripletail have small, hard mouths and you want to be sure the fish has taken the bait. • Fish Small Baits: The reason a tripletail is hanging out on that marker is to eat the small crabs and shrimp that live there. They’re used to small food and have small mouths, which is why they’ll sometimes reject big shrimp. Pitch small or medium shrimp to them or small baitfish and lures no longer than about 2.5 inches. • Stick With Them: If a tripletail spooks or goes down, it usually isn’t going far. Try drifting an unweighted bait on a longer 4- or 5-foot leader that will get down deeper on a long drift past your structure. If that doesn’t work, t will soon be the time of year when everyone’s favorite oddball, the go hit your next mark and come back later. There’s a good chance the fish will tripletail, starts moving in closer to shore to hang out on structure or free- be sunbathing happily on the surface when you return. floating debris. Whether you actively sight fish them by running a line of traps and markers or if you just happen to see one while pursuing something For more tips and tricks, visit coastalanglermag.com.

xperienced boaters know that even a tiny bit of air in a vessel’s hydraulic steering system can compromise performance, response and steering effort. However, the process of correctly bleeding the system—whether performing maintenance or installing new hydraulic steering on a boat—could be messy and challenging to do correctly. Not to mention that it is a two-person job, with one at the helm and one back at the steering cylinder. Marine steering leader Dometic has forever solved this problem with its Power Purge Jr., a self-contained system that makes it easy for one person to fill and bleed 100 percent of the air out of any SeaStar hydraulic steering system in 10 minutes or less. This system comes in its own sturdy carrying case and includes a blue helm hose, clear cylinder hose, helm adapter and battery connectors. All that’s required from the boater is a wrench to open the bleeder valves and 5 quarts of SeaStar hydraulic fluid. This system uses the boat’s battery power to quickly fill the entire system with fluid and fully remove even the smallest air bubbles—helping WWW.DOMETIC.COM boaters get back on the water fast.

KINGS By A. deGruchy

your veins. Then, bam! The tarpon puts on a show, soaring into the air with moves like no other. It’s a show that leaves even the most seasoned anglers wide-eyed. Those silver kings? They’re not just strong; they’re the rockstars of Islamorada. Now, let’s talk strategy. These tarpon are known for their spontaneity, so patience is your best friend. When it comes to bait, think live mullet or crabs–the kind of irresistible treats that tarpon just can’t resist. Toss your bait in front of where you think they could be, let it drift back in the current, and patiently watch the magic unfold. When your line starts to load, get ready for a ride. Keep that tension steady, brace yourself for some serious speed, and be prepared for tarpon acrobatics. It’s like a rollercoaster on water, and trust me, you’ll want to savor every twist and turn. When they jump, it’s important to bow your rod toward them to give them the slack so the hook doesn’t pull out. As you get closer to that leader touch or face grab, remember, gentle is the name of the game. Tarpon have delicate mouths, and going all WWE on them might end in heartbreak. If you’re going out with a guide, I recommend booking more than one day to give yourself better odds of landing a tarpon. So come late February through March, and the stage will be set for a front-row seat to Islamorada’s Silver King show. To book a charter, visit www.beansportfishing.com

Every year, people travel from all over the world to this gem and gear up for one of their ultimate bucket-list fish, the notorious “Silver King.” Hooking a tarpon is like a dance with a silver giant. Catch South Florida’s

D

own in South Florida, the influx of exotic species is crazy. Most people know about peacock bass and snakeheads, but clown knifefish are a lesser-known exotic that are a blast to catch. You might see these fish rolling on the surface, but they’re tough to catch due to their intelligence. Clown knifefish are silver in color with black spots along their tail. These fish have a very unique shape that almost resembles the blade of a knife. Their faces are similar to snook or a tarpon, but they have a huge shoulder right behind their eyes.

4 FLORIDA

FEBRUARY 2024

These fish have a similar texture to freshwater trout, as they have micro scales and a slime coating that makes them smooth to the touch. A fun fact, since their anal fin and tail fin are conjoined, it allows them to undulate and actually swim backward. If you get one boat-side, watch as they back away from the net. Clown knives are native to southeast Asia. Their popularity as aquarium fish has led to their spread because they quickly outgrow most home aquariums and are released. These fish like warm water, and they are bimodal air-breathers, which means they surface to gulp air if the water is too stagnant. This makes them well-suited to the swamps, lakes, canals and backwater rivers of South Florida. Juveniles school together and hide in roots of plants. When they grow larger, they become solitary but still hunt from the cover of aquatic vegetation. Clown knifefish spawn in the spring. Research suggests they prefer three straight days of rain before laying and fertilizing eggs. When the time is right, the female lays eggs on a root or some other secure surface. The male then tends the eggs. Even after the eggs hatch, the male will guard the fry until they are large enough to be on their own. These fish are nocturnal. The best time to catch them is at night, or at dusk or dawn. When the sun is up, they seek refuge under structure or in thick mats of vegetation. Clown knifefish are aggressive ambush predators. If you walk canal banks at night, you can see their eyes glowing in the beam of a flashlight. I’ve found the fishing is always best after a rain, as it gets them frenzied. I use live bait like shiners or shad and freeline them near flowing pipes or in fast-moving canals. If knifefish are there, you’ll see them rolling on the surface. I use a small live bait hook on a 20-pound leader, since they do have sharp teeth. For artificials, a 2- to 3-inch white swimbait or a jig will work. An exciting option is to fish a white topwater frogs at night. Remember, when they get to the bank the fight isn’t over. They always come up to say hi, and then quickly back away into the darkness. The current IGFA all-tackle world record is 14-pound, 8-ounce fish caught from Florida’s Lake Ida in 2018 by Michael Donvito.

ig beach surf fishing Bonanza! It’s time to Bamba! Things like this don’t happen all the time. The pictures speak for themselves. Rich from Green Cover Springs knows what I’m talking about. He pulled a doormat, flounder right through the waves onto the beach. Ya, Mon! Next up mega pompano followed up by a huge black drum, not to mention all the slot redfish. The ocean is healing as it always does. As we speak right now, winter has arrived to Florida. It’s getting colder and the water temperature is down to 62 Degrees, which means the migration has started. Pompano and other species are heading South. I’m back sitting behind the wall, shielded from the lucky winds from the west. I’m a little sheltered. Truthfully, it is so beautiful out here today: 50 degrees, sunny and very fishable. My neighbor, Pat, from Rome, New York- on a little rod with a spoon- just landed this beautiful big 34 inch 13 pound bluefish. I’m not gonna have that much space to write because of all the pictures of the big fish I’m sending in this week. They deserve the space. Ya, mon! Right now, the cold water is coming in with blue fish and tons of sharks! It’s like Sharnado out here: I’m losing lines and sinkers right and left, landing a few sharks and releasing them. Not to be outdone, Bobby the postman gets one of the biggest pompanos of the year, a 23 inch 5 pound beauty. All this happened in a week just on the beach surf fishing. It’s kind of cold out here but still tropical, at least in my mind. Now the charcoals and the wood are ready and me and these fish are heading to the smoker. Marco poMpano

aptain & The Kids strives to promote youth anglers at both the local and the national level through the youth angler program. If it wasn’t for passing down the techniques, traditions, and the love for the water, the sport of fishing would slowly fade away. It is our mission to teach youth anglers about conservation and ethical fishing practices. This month’s youth anglers spotlight are Vaughn opezzo age 9 from New Smyrna Beach, FL and Ashton Young age 11 from Live oak, FL. They enjoyed a morning of fishing with Capt. Adam in the backcountry waters targeting redfish, snook, and mangrove snapper. on this cold December day, the bite started slow but Ashton Young did an amazing job landing his very first redfish and snook. Vaughn opezzo also landed multiple fish including his favorite fight of the day, a large ladyfish that put on an acrobatic fight to the boat. This was a special trip to celebrate Vaughn opezzo birthday. Be sure to keep a look out for these awesome young men while on the water. Capt. Evan and Capt. Adam started Captain & The Kids after finding out how many kids in the New Smyrna Beach area that have never been fishing or on a boat. Since that day Capt. Evan &

Bicycles

Capt. Adam strive to get more youth anglers on the water each and every year! Sol Fishing will do everything possible to make every young man or lady’s fishing dreams come true. It does not matter if the kids want to go offshore or inshore. Sol Fishing will target whichever species they want to catch. Some of the most recent species that the youth anglers have been wanting to target are lane snapper, cobia, amberjack, sharks, barracuda, redfish, sea trout, and snook. Captain & The Kids program is made possible by all of our retailers who stock Sol Fishing gear such as our hats, decals, shirts, and other apparel. Stop by New Smyrna Beach outfitters, outriggers, Yellow Dawg Bait & Tackle, Donald’s Bait & Tackle, 38 Live Bait, E & J Bait & Tackle, Sunglass Cabana, Shades of New Smyrna Beach, Boaters Exchange, and Pedego of NSB to get your Sol Fishing gear to help support Captain & The Kids! Sol Fishing’s amazing sponsors Daiichi Hooks, Powerpole, Fitzgerald Fishing, Navico, Florida Marine Tracks / ISLA Mapping, Seadek Marine, Custom Marine Volusia, and Castaway Customs also play a huge roll in the program!

ebruary is going to be a blast. It’s certainly a chillier month to fish but man the sheepshead bite will be on fire! I usually have my best days in Feb on these toothy fish. I will be focused on the jetties and bridges, along with a few select deeper docks up and down the intercoastal. Getting a bite isn’t usually the hard part, it’s hooking these fish. I like #1 straight hooks, I usually go with Seaworx hooks, they are a super high-quality brand out of Jax FL, if not available owner #5115 #1 jhooks also work great. I like to use sand fleas, fiddler crabs, and shrimp for these fish. However others will see success with a variety of bait like barnacles, oysters, mussels, blue crab, and I’ve even heard

bloodworms will work. If using bare hooks like previously mentioned, you rig it with a short 12 in max 20 lb flouro leader to a barrel swivel and a 1-2 oz egg weight on your main line. tension is key to feeling you bite so don’t let your bait just lie on the bottom, you have to be at the ready holding your rod. I have also in the past couple of years favored using jig heads tied directly to my line with a short leader. I like Hunting and fishing Depots Sheepshead and Bridge Donkey Jigs. one last little secret I’ve mentioned before is tipping your hooks or jigs with a small piece of fish bites, I like the sand flea flavor for this but I am certain shrimp or blue crab scent will work well also. once you get out there a few times and lose some bait and then hook a few you will start to get the feel for these fish, and once you do its game on for the fish fry! Don’t get too distracted at the jetties with the sheepshead ... there should be a decent amount of Spanish mackerel around. They will be hitting bait on the surface so have a gotcha plug or something shiny ready to roll, these fish are super fun to catch and in my opinion the best mackerel to eat! Lastly on the windy days pre and post fronts, I will be hiding in the back country up north near High bridge in ormond Beach. The flats provide shelter and even on the windiest and coldest days I can find a spot blocked by the wind with sunshine! This time of the year redfish will tend to school up in the sun on the flats, and even if they don’t school

up I can usually find them actively feeding. Nothing more fun than throwing artificials like paddle tails by NLBN or Jerk Baits by Zman at active fish. If you’re in the ormond Beach area swing by our shop Yellow Dawg Bait & Tackle and myself or my team will get you set up and pointed in the right direction. As always if you see us on the water say hello and get out there and catch some fish! capT. JaMiE ThrappaS Yellow Dawg Fishing www.yellowdawgfishing.com (386) 366-3424

inter patterns can continue through February or very early spring fishing can start if we have a mild to warmer month. If we do have an early spring, expect the early return of coastal migratory fish. This includes schooling Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Pompano, Spanish Mackerel, and the over size jumbo Black Drum. Lagoon Redfish are on shallow water flats, sloughs, creeks, and drop off edges. Deep water larger reds are in the ICW channel, New Smyrna bridges, Ponce Inlet, and Haulover Canal. Shallow reds are a sight fishing target in winter. Search slow and quiet as our skinny water schools are notoriously spooky. Select size shrimp, small live finger mullet, mud minnows, and crab parts are the best natural baits. Small soft plastics, Gulp baits, and shrimp or crab patterns on fly can be good artificial choices. Seatrout can also be shallow or deep, but most flats trout are bigger size fish, where free lined finger mullet are most popular live bait. Big specks are skittish in the shallows and sight fishing usually requires long distance sighting and an accurate cast. Mullet, select shrimp, and larger plastics can get bit. We should all consider release of all the larger Seatrout since they are the most valuable breeder females. School size trout are usually deeper on drop offs, holes, and channels. Snook season reopens February 1 and slot limit is

Edgewater Backcountry Black Drum with Capt Michael Savedow

28” to 32” with just 1 fish per person. Don’t forget you need a snook permit on your fishing license. Linesiders are ambush feeders, so live bait, artificial lures, and fly will catch them near man-made structures like jetties, bridges, docks. Natural spots in the backwaters and Lagoon with downed mangrove bushes, branches, drop

offs, and points are a good option as well. Sheepshead are always a winter/ spring fish, they will eat fiddler crabs, small live or peeled frozen shrimp, pieces of clam, oyster, or any crab. They have a small hard mouth so use a sharp hook of #2 to 1/0 range. Use as little hardware and weight as possible to make your rig stealthy in the clear winter water. Fish sheepshead’s favorite hangouts are bridges, dock pilings, rock piles, inlet jettys, and oyster bars. You can chum them in with crushed oysters or barnacles scraped off pilings. Bluefish are open water fish, in the river, backcountry, inlet, and surf fish. They are not picky and will eat minnows, shrimp, flies, top water lures, flashy small lures. You’ll find them near spots holding bait fish schools like jetties, bridges, back water points with current and ambush spots.

KAYAKING FORECAST

J

anuary has limited my kayak fishing due to weather, but so far I’ve fished every single day this year from the bank, boat, and kayak. My goal is to make at least one cast for all 366 days in 2024. I’ve attempted this before but only made it 156 days before missing a day, so I decided that was good enough for that year. I will be posting a daily picture and video on my instagram page if you want to follow along on my journey. on my most recent trip on the kayak, I went out to target Triple Tail. I know this time of year there are lots of sheepshead in the river but I’ve also found that the Triple Tail come in and follow the shrimp run. I like to fish a 4-5 ft 20lb fluorocarbon liter with a 1/0 Jhook. I always use weighted bobbers which I usually position where I tie my braid to liter. The bait I use when targeting triple tail is live shrimp and mud minnows. What I look for when targeting triple tail is crab trap buoys and channel markers. It’s very difficult when the tide is moving to drift a shrimp on a bobber unless you are anchored in your kayak. I always anchor in position so my bobber floats straight to the buoy or very close to the front of it and I let the tide move it around the buoy because the Triple Tail often stage behind the marker or buoy. This winter has had so much rain that sight-casting them in the river isn’t an option. The water has been very dark and the rain run-off doesn’t help. It’s definitely a lot of paddling and very frustrating at times to locate these fish constantly. If you are willing to put

in the time and fish long days and hit 20-30 buoys and channel markers, there’s a good possibility you will get a shot. The Triple Tail is considered by many to be equal or similar to a red snapper or grouper. The flesh is firm and white with flaky, sweet meat. It’s a delicious fish with incredible natural flavor. My personal opinion is pound for pound they fight better than any fish in the river. Maybe it’s the 3 tails…. lol. In Florida, the minimum size limit is 18 inches and has a daily bag limit of 2 per day, per person. They are open for harvest the year round and may be taken by hook and line only. As with many other marine species, the larger fish tend to be loners, but I’ve landed multiple big ones on one channel marker when they come in to spawn. I’m highly anticipating a strong Triple Tail bite in February and March. I hope everyone is having success so far this year on the water. Hopefully I’ll see some of you locals out there this spring and summer. BlakE aBBEy

ebruary can be exciting for catching numbers of fish. This month is good for schools of redfish and trout. When the water gets cold the reds will school and move into the shallows where it’s common to see schools of 100+. The winter flounder migration happens in January and February which can make for some fun fishing. Live baits of choice are mullet, shrimp, and mud minnows. The water in the river looks like strong tea and I find cutting the tail off of a live mullet works well in the stained water because it generates smell and movement. Artificial baits that are subsurface with rattles like the 3 D Inshore minnow 3 1/2 inch minnow worked slowly.

inter is a great time to fish up in the North Volusia/ High Bridge Area. We have plenty of places for you to tuck in and hide from the wind and current and get your lines tight on the fish! Lots of decent redfish being caught on both live shrimp and artificial lures. NLBN paddle tails and DoA paddle tails seem to be the go to lately on soft plastics. The sheepshead and black drum bite along the docks and at the bridges has also been pretty consistent. These fish are being caught on shrimp, sand fleas, and fiddler crabs if you can get ‘em! Don’t forget about surf fishing! In between these fronts we usually will get a lay day or two and the fish will be hungry! Lots of good whiting, big bluefish, and pompano being caught on the beach by the shop! Come on up and check out the shop we have been remodeling and adding new tanks so we can carry more live bait like croakers, pin fish, mud minnows, sand fleas, etc ! capT. JaMiE ThrappaS

ven though the weather wasn’t consistent in January we still saw some good catches of Speckled Perch brought in and we hope February will be even better. With more consistent cooler weather, we could make the most of the upcoming months. February is usually an excellent month for Specks (Crappie) and you can use all kinds of fishing methods to catch this much sought after table fare. Trolling, jigging and drifting with minnows are some of the most productive methods used depending on weather conditions, moon phase and water temperatures. Some of the best jig and lure colors for February will be purple and green, blue and silver and orange. Make sure to use lighter test line while trolling. Find the best speed for trolling and then shorten or lengthen your line as needed. When Specks move to more shallow water to spawn, vertical jigging and pitching a cork and jig or live minnow against the bank will produce the most fish. When the fish aren’t good against the bank, try drifting or trolling the open water of one of the many lakes that connect to the St. Johns River. Lake Woodruff has long been rated one of the top lakes in Florida for both Largemouth Bass and Speckled Perch. February is typically a great month for Bass fishing, and we have seen some real improvement considering the last couple of years. Some Bass will spawn this month, but not all of them. Wild river shiners are a great bait for these large mouth Bass. Fish these shiners against floating vegetation under an egg shaped float with a weedless hook. For the angler that favors artificial lures try large top water plugs, slow roll large spinner baits or throw a 9 inch trick worm with no weight. Remember, the colder the water temperature the slower the retrieve. Highland Park Fish Camp has a large stocked pond for the novice fishermen to learn the great art of angling. Call us any time for more info or an updated fishing report.

emperatures are dropping, winds are picking up, and cold fronts are rolling though. The long warm days of summer are over, but don’t let that discourage you from getting out on the water and chasing fish this winter. There’s still phenomenal fishing to be had, especially on fly. one good thing about fishing during the colder temperatures is “Hitting that snooze button!” Remember if you’re cold, the fish are cold too. So take your time hitting that boat ramp. Allow that water to warm up a bit. With the water temps hovering around 60 degrees inshore. Finding that protected flat with good sun that’s out of the wind, will be a few degrees warmer. That temperature difference can be a game changer! Another thing that doesn’t like the cold is your fly line! If you notice your cast are getting shorter and your line has more memory in it. It’s time to switch out your warm water line for a cold water line. Most tropical/warm water line starts to under preform when the water temperature drops below 70 degrees. If you don’t have cold water line, you can try stretching out your line out before casting. Also keeping your

line out of the water and in a line basket or on the deck will help. Matching your hatch. When targeting Red and Black drum slow your roll. Try switching to crab or shrimp pattern, and let the fly do the work for you. When these fish get really lethargic, A well placed shot with little to no movement could be what it takes to entice a bite. When targeting Trout, Tarpon and Snook I like to switch to larger bait fish patterns. These fish tend to school up in deeper water. Fishing structures that are out of the wind with good current and sun is a good place to start. Places like seawalls, docks, and bridges absorb heat through the day making the temperature of the water warmer in those areas. Switching to sink tip line or intermediate sinking line will help get your fly where you need it. When fishing the beaches and inlets don’t over look our Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, and Jacks. These are my favorite fish to target in the colder months. These fish love cold water and will eat just about anything when feeding. Throwing long shanked surf candy flies or clouser style

patterns are great choices. If you get into schools of Bluefish, tie on a popper or gurgler and hang on. These fish are highly aggressive and underrated. They put up a great fight on fly. If you start losing flies to these toothy fish, tie on bite guard of wire or heavy mono in front of your fly and check your leader after every fish. I hope these cold water tips help you stick some fish this winter. Don’t let the cold and wind keep you inside. recently had a stretch of tough fishing days that called for a thorough covering of a cove to find what I was looking for. Over the next few paragraphs, I’ll cover what changes I made that saved the day, and I think you will see the logic in my decision and possibly implement this method when you find yourself in a slow-bite situation. Keep in mind, I typically don’t have the patience to utilize this approach, as it is very methodical, leaving no stone unturned, so to speak, but it can and did pay off. During a normal wade, I only target the sweet zones, but when they are not there or not feeding, I map out a deliberate path where I cover every inch of the area, twice. Depending on whether I start from the shore or from offshore via a boat or kayak, I will choose a direction to wade. For this example, let’s say I walked in and started from the bank. I will slowly walk out to the maximum depth I want to fish casting to my right, left and straight ahead. I vary my retrieve speed, depth and action throughout until I find what the fish are looking for. Once I reach the farthest point I want to cover, I make a 90-degree turn and walk about the distance of a long cast as I continue casting right, left, and straight ahead. Once I reach that point, I turn another 90 degrees and head back toward the shore repeating the same casting process. One direction will be covering the same water I just fished but from a different angle. At times, this can make a difference and entice the bite, depending on how they are staged on the structure or the direction they are swimming through the area. Once my cast has reached the shore, I may decide to change lure size or type. Once again, I turn 90 degrees and repeat the process. During a tough bite, you need to pull out all the stops. This is not the time to be stuck in a rut of what typically works or what your favorite fishing style may be. It’s important to change your retrieve style and speed. Don’t let a slow bite convince you that inactive fish will only eat a slowly presented lure. Many times, a faster erratic retrieve is what gets them to strike. Cover the gamut and see what works. I rarely use this method, as it is tedious. However, if I have high confidence in the area and the fish are inactive or possibly deeper or shallower than I anticipated, working methodically has paid off, and I learn something new each time it does. Take a kid, and even a tough day of catching will still be a good day of fishing.

FISH TOPWATER TO LOCATE SPAWNERS

Shallow flats adjacent to deeper water are preferred spawning grounds, and a topwater is one of my favorite ways to cover water and locate productive areas. C-Hawk 25 Center Console The C-Hawk 25 Center Console is an infinitely customizable boat with a huge following among hardcore anglers. They are the boat of choice for many charter captains who prefer functionality over flash and want a no-nonsense vessel that’s designed to perform and built to take a beating.

One of the great advantages of the C-Hawk 25 is it’s totally customizable, so it can be purpose built to be a better boat for whatever it is you need to do.

LENGTH: 24’11” BEAM: 9’6” DRAFT: 12” DRY WEIGHT: 2,800 lbs. FUEL CAPACITY: 112 Gal. MAXIMUM HP: 300 DEADRISE: 12 degrees TRANSOM: 25”/ 30”

“We have 10-plus guides using them on the west coast of Florida,” said C-Hawk Boats Owner Brad Grubbs. “In Georgia and South Carolina, they’re using it as a small passenger ferry. In Chesapeake Bay, it’s a crab boat.”

to commercial-application standards. They are designed to withstand hard use for years of trouble-free boating, and you can customize your C-Hawk from the factory in any way that suits your purpose.

At its core, the C-Hawk 25cc is a hard-core workhorse with a 300 horsepower maximum that will take you anywhere you need to go. Its 9’6” beam allows it to float in very skinny water with just a 12” draft, and it is also extremely stable, which should appeal for bottomfishing, diving and any other pursuit where a stable platform is preferred.

“We can mix and match consoles, fish boxes, full transoms, cut transoms, bare hulls… you name it,” Grubbs said. “There are some recreational guys adding towers and sight fishing for cobia, and such. Everything we do is built around keep it simple, keep it efficient, keep it easy to maintain, keep it cost effective to own and operate. They are all unique… no cookie cutter trailer queens here. The 25 is a great example of what C-Hawk is.”

BLITZING BASS INVADE

EARLY SEASON ESTUARIES By Nick Carter

S

triped bass are king along the crags and marshes of the Massachusetts North Shore, and each year around the first week of May something very interesting takes place. They call it the early season in this stretch of coastline north of Boston, and it can bring on some of the fastest action of the year. All the baitfish—the herring, the sand eels, the silversides and bunker— push into the estuaries in search of warmer water temperatures. Big schools of striped bass move in with them. It leads to classic bass blitzes, when pods of stripers push bait up to boil on the surface as birds hammer them from above.

You can bet Matt Zimmerman, owner of Back Eddy Charters out of Beverly, Mass., will be there in the middle of the melee standing in the water waving a stick in the air. “I fly fish pretty much everywhere for everything, but it’s better early season,” he said. “You can use a slower presentation, mimic smaller baits, and cover the water column a lot better with a fly.” Historically, the pattern produced 40-fish days of smaller 14- to 26-inch stripers, known as “schoolies.” However, recent years have seen an uptick in larger 26- to 30-inch fish in the early season. “That’s great for fishing, but it’s not a great sign for the fishery,” Zimmerman said. If you haven’t heard, fisheries managers are scrambling to prop up Atlantic striper populations. Since 2019, striper reproduction on the Eastern Seaboard has been dismal due to weather conditions. Emergency action reduced the recreational limit to one fish in a slot limit from 28 to 31 inches, and more restrictive measures may be on the horizon. “The regs? I’m all catch and release, so it hasn’t impacted me too much,” Zimmerman said. “They’re trying to get the stocks up, but most of what we’re seeing is slot fish and up.” That’s not necessarily the case in the early season, which Zimmerman said is a time when you can just park the truck and wade in. “Most of the time I fish from a boat,” he said. “But early season, when there’s lots of fish in the river, it’s easier and you can catch more fish wading from shore.” Zimmerman fishes 5- to 8-weight rods and leaders of straight 20- or 30-pound monofilament. Intermediate sinking lines allow for good depth control, and a handful of Clousers and Deceivers are all you need. Zimmerman suggested 4- to 6-inch patterns and colors of green/white, yellow/white and gray/white. The fishing is best on the last three hours of an outgoing tide or the first couple hours of an incoming tide, when the bait moves around and incites feeding activity. This river bite is Zimmerman’s go-to pattern for about a month, after which he’ll move out to the beaches and rocky islands, where huge stripers herd bait and slam 6- to 8-inch Hollow Fleyes. RESCUE

AT SEA

OFF VENICE By Capt. Quinlyn Haddon

E

arly in my career, I fished out of Venice, Louisiana. On off days, we fished inshore and roadside, which produced incredible catches like bull reds, 100-pound alligator gar and 70-pound blue cats. It was nothing to complain about, but my heart is always offshore. The offshore fishing off Venice is topnotch for yellowfin tuna, wahoo, marlin and swordfish, but the gas bill was too much for me to get out there as anything but crew. One evening, I was invited on an offshore trip and was told I got to plan the route. I ecstatically hit my Hilton’s offshore report to check the salinity chart and decided to hit an overlooked rig called Moxie. We headed out the next morning, caught bait and arrived at the rig. This rig sits in shallower waters and is a bit off the path for rig hopping, so it is often passed by. I was surprised to see another boat when we arrived. The bottom machine lit up with giant marks, and we tossed out our baits. I was running the deck and focused on the back of the boat, but I kept hearing the captain comment on the other boat. It seemed like they were diving, but they didn’t have a dive flag up. I heard him say the boat looked to be sitting

low in the water. All of a sudden, Capt. Travis Mayeux started screaming, “LINES IN, LINES IN!” I was reeling everything up as quickly as I could when he pushed the boat to full throttle. I wasn’t sure what was going on until I had the lines secured and I turned around. The motors of the other boat had gone under, and the bow reached for the sky before slipping away. The boat sank in seconds. By the time we got to the scene, most of the flotsam had been carried away by the currents. We rescued the spearfishermen, one Pelican case and a fish bag. We ended our trip and took the spearfishers back to the dock. Their wallets and keys sank offshore, so they called Plaquemines Parish Sheriff ’s Office to get into their truck. The deputy ran their names, and one of them had an outstanding warrant. He was taken to jail for the weekend. It was a rough day for those guys, but it could have been much worse. Fishing offshore oil rigs provides a false sense of security. You are still very much offshore even though you are near a structure. The crew on those rigs are not lifeguards and are not paying attention to you. Considering how quickly the debris dispersed and how unfished that rig was, those fellas were very lucky we were there that day. Capt. Quinlyn Haddon guides with Sweet E’nuf Charters, out of Marathon, Florida Keys. Contact her at (504) 920-6342, captainquinlyn.com or @captainquinlyn.

IT’S PRIME TIME

ON AMERICA’S HOTTEST BIG BASS LAKE By Nick Carter

I

f a truly giant largemouth bass is on your bucket list, make plans to visit O.H. Ivie Lake in Texas over the next few months. Last year, this 19,000acre impoundment of the Colorado River burst onto the scene as the hottest big bass lake in the nation. A string of 17 monster largemouths from January through April kept O.H. Ivie in the headlines, and 10 of them were caught in February. And when we say monster, we’re not talking about 8- to 10-pounders, we’re talking about 13-plus-pound behemoths. According to data from Toyota ShareLunker, Texas’ trophy bass recognition and breeding program, February is the time to catch a giant at this central Texas reservoir. Bass are at their heaviest and most aggressive ahead of the spawn, when they are fat, feeding and full of eggs. Last February’s incredible streak was highlighted by an enormous 17.03-pounder that is the lake record and the eighth largest bass ever caught in Texas. Jason Conn caught it on Feb. 13, 2023, and he said the fish was even heavier before it started regurgitating shad in his livewell. Moving into March and April last year, the trophy bass statistics were still pretty amazing—with 34 fish heavier than 8 pounds—but the giant fish tapered off. Five 13-plus-pounders were caught during those two months, and then no one registered another one until November, when Shawn Strength caught a 16.65-pound monster. The totals for 2023 were 75 fish heavier than 8 pounds and 18 heavier than 13 pounds. The true total is potentially much more impressive, because these statistics include only the fish anglers bothered to register with ShareLunker. So, why has the productivity of O.H. Ivie largemouth bass fishing exploded

over the last three or four years? According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, intensive stocking of bass with Florida-strain genetics is the secret ingredient. Florida strain genetics produce larger, faster-growing fish than the native-northern strain genetics in the system. Part of the mission of the ShareLunker program is to breed trophy fish, and they do this by using 13-plus-pounders caught by anglers in their breeding program. It is estimated 75 to 85 percent of the bass in O.H. Ivie possess those Florida genetics. On top of that, weather played a role in the lake’s rise. Following a prolonged drought, heavy rain in the fall of 2018 raised water levels by more than 30 feet. “It gave these bass pretty much unlimited food and space to grow,” said a ShareLunker representative, “and they just grew like crazy.” Stay tuned. It’ll be interesting to see what America’s hottest big bass lake produces over the next four months, especially with all the added angler attention that comes with a bright hot spotlight.
