s the holidays approach and temperatures drop, many will feel the need to scratch that fishing itch. There is no better place to catch your next trophy this winter than down in sunny south Florida.

If it’s monster offshore pelagics you seek, winter offers some of our best fishing. Take your boat or book a charter out of Stuart, Fla.—aka “The Sailfish Capital of the World”—and you are sure to land a sailfish, a bucket list fish for many. Mahi, cobia, kingfish and wahoo will also be biting. Our average January high of 74 degrees will also quickly quench your thirst for warmer weather.

North of Palm Beach, we do a lot of trolling, and south you’ll find live baiting very popular, so don’t forget your sabiki rod.

No boat? No problem.

We have multiple beach-access points where you can catch your fill of Pompano, whiting, bluefish, snook and more, maybe even a permit or bonefish. In Martin County, check out Stuart Beach, Hobe Sound Beach and Tiger Shores.

Excellent jetties and piers include Juno Pier, Ft. Pierce Inlet and Sebastian Inlet, where I recently limited out on redfish one day and caught an inshore slam the next!

Fishing off the beach, a “pompano rig” will catch a ton of species and even cut bait on the bottom with a pyramid sinker will work. For lures, I like topwaters in the morning and after that I throw lipped crankbaits and paddletail swimbaits.

Regarding inshore saltwater, I love fishing from the Saint Lucie Inlet north to Ft. Pierce. Under the docks and along the mangroves you will find snook, redfish and trout, as well as flounder and drum in deeper holes and channels. If you can’t find any mullet to net, a simple live shrimp and a bobber will catch everything and anything. If you do not have a boat, walk the shoreline for some incredible wade fishing. I caught my first snook wading the docks in Ft. Pierce many years ago.

Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about you bass guys! Our incredible bass fishing this time of year starts with the largemouth spawn and plenty of crappie on Lake Okeechobee. I also love Camp Mack in Lake Wales, Fla. Mix up your freshwater game with abundant exotic species fisheries featuring clownknife fish, peacock bass, hybrid bass and even the bullseye snakehead. You will catch exotics in any of the Lake Clarke, Lake Osborne or Lake Ida chains in Palm Beach County.

Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club’s 2019 Wahoo Windup

S

he thought her line had snagged on a rock since it proved difficult to reel in at first. Yet, St. Thomas angler Claire Anaclerio, who competed in the Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club’s 2019 Wahoo Windup Tournament on Saturday November 9, thought that couldn’t be correct. Anaclerio and her fellow anglers fishing aboard the Calypso-built Double Header 38 were high-speed trolling south of the U.S. Virgin Top Angler Claire Anaclerio with her 35.0-pound wahoo. In reality, she hooked into a whopper wahoo and it was this 35.0-pounder that earned Anaclerio the tournament’s Top Angler prize.

“It was about 30 seconds after lines went in the water that I hooked up the fish,” says Anaclerio, who competes in most of the

Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club’s tournaments and confides this catch was on a pink and blue lure. “The fight ended up being only about 5 minutes, but at first when the line didn’t budge I was for sure it must be stuck on a rock.”

Anaclerio’s catch was 40-plus pounds shy of the $10,000 prize offered for the tournament angler who caught the largest wahoo over 75-pounds.

Meanwhile, St. Thomas’ Zac Wooden, angling off the Calypso 40, Gypsy King, caught the Second Largest Wahoo, a 31.5-pounder.

Wooden’s catch, combined with fellow anglers Walt Basnight 26.5-pound wahoo and James Bahan’s 16.0-pound fish, earned Gypsy King the Top Boat Prize. The top boat was determined as the most wahoo by weight.

“We had two goals for this tournament,” says Gypsy King angler, Jared Buckstein. “To win and to catch the most fish to do so. The second we caught that first fish, I knew it would lead to victory.”

The 9-boat tournament fleet with 40 anglers landed a total of 385-pounds of wahoo.

“We had a great tournament,” says Kelvin Bailey, Jr., Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club president. “Looking ahead, the Club looks forward to community outreach during the holiday season and an invigorated tournament schedule for 2020.”

Cash prizes and carved wood plaques made by My Brother’s Workshop were presented at an Awards Dinner at the VIGFC, in Red Hook, held Tuesday night. The dinner entrée was wahoo, donated by several of the participating tournament boats.

As for racing, Viens started locally at the New Smyrna Speedway and fell in love with the sport.
