• BAIT: Obviously, mullet is the bait to use this time of the year. Full-grown mullet are great for shark and tarpon fishing. I prefer freelining finger-sized mullet, because pretty much everything eats them.

In the backcountry, I like a light- to mediumaction 2000 size spinning set-up to fish 10-pound leaders and 3/0 circle hooks. I prefer Mustad hooks and tie them on with a simple loop knot. I use an FG knot to connect my leader to a braided main line. This creates a true free-line, without the added weight of a swivel.

The rigging is pretty much the same if I need to beef up for larger catches. With a 2500-size setup, I’ll fish 15- to 20-pound leader. I’ll bump that up to 25- to 30-pound test on 3000-size gear for bigger fish.

TARGETING REDFISH During the Mullet Migration

Keep up with Skye Burkhardt on Facebook Inshore Adventures with Skye and on @brassyangler87.Instagram

Landing a bull red this time of the year is easy. With the mullet running, simply free-line a mullet or drop one on a weighted rig to land a trophy! Before you experience the drag-pulling run, you should know how to properly handle and release your fish.

The mullet run doesn’t have an official start or end date. Large schools of mullet—some the size of three football fields—move south as temperatures cool. Tarpon, sharks, kingfish and redfish are just some of the gamefish that move with these pods. Most years the fishing is on fire in October and November.

• ARTIFICIALS: This backcountry lady angler enjoys sight fishing and scouting Mosquito Lagoon and the marshes of the Tomoka Basin along Florida’s central Atlantic Coast. I’ll target bull reds in the inlets, but I spend most days targeting snook, tarpon and slot reds in the backcountry. This style of fishing is perfect for throwing artificials on light tackle.

Handling them with care and releasing them safely is important to the future of our fisheries. The statewide slot limit from 18 and 27 inches is intended to protect the large fish, which are part of the spawning stock.

It’s heartbreaking to see breeder fish floating due to carelessness or lack of knowledge. Hauling a big redfish up vertically onto a bridge or pier, dragging it over the rocks on a jetty or tossing it back from up high severely limits its chance of survival. Get a pier net to fish from a bridge or pier, and do everything in your power to ensure the healthy release of your fish.

• REDFISH REGULATIONS: Florida recently adopted new management plan for redfish. There are now varied regulations across nine different zones. Anglers need to understand those regulations because they’re intended to protect one of our iconic species in the face

• TACKLE: I mainly fish inshore, so light tackle is the way for me. However, it’s important to be prepared to switch up depending on the size and species of game fish present.

Here are some tips for anglers to take advantage of the mullet run.

Most of the state now has a one-fishper-person daily limit in the 18- to 27inch slot. Some regions have a two-fishper-vessel possession limit and others have a four-fish-per-vessel possession limit. The Indian River Lagoon region is strictly catch-and-release only for redfish. For complete Florida redfish regulations, go

Atlantic Coast of Florida experiences one of the planet’s great migrations each fall. When millions of mullet push south in giant schools toward spawning grounds off the southern end of the state, it presents an exciting prospect for fishing. It’s an event anglers anticipate all year long.

Free-lining sounds simple, but where you choose to fish and what you’re targeting will play a role in the set-up and rig you should use.

This time of year, any artificial that resembles a mullet will do the trick. I like Vudu Mullet Swimbaits, Rapala X-raps, Bomber Lures Mullets,

To fish with the mullet, I just follow the pods, cast to the outside of the school and open the bail to let the bait swim. When you hit it right, you can hook-up on nearly every cast, with the species changing from one cast to the next. Big gamefish tend to seek out isolated or injured mullet, which is exactly what your bait is.

the possibilities of spawning. The same places will hold large seabass, as well. I love to eat grouper, but the way I grouper fish also produces large seabass, which I think are even better than grouper in texture andScampsflavor.

Starting this month, the larger gags will be so close in that it’ll shock you. Don’t run too far, or you’ll run over some of the biggest fish of the year. Go wherever you jig up your cigar minnows and sardines, and the gags will be right there. When you get a few baits in the well, it’s a good idea to have at least one person put a bait right back down.

and snappers hold a special place in my heart. Starting right now, they should be going off! It’s time consuming to stop on the way out a jig up bait. However, a 15- or 20-minute bait stop could make the difference between a good day and a great day. When you find bait in numbers, it doesn’t take long to rack up. I like to keep a Sabiki angler on each side of the boat handing me baits to dehook into a bucket in the center of the boat. Once I get 20 or so baits in the bucket, I pour them into the livewell and repeat until there’s enough.

I

I also like to take pinfish from the marina as a “bird in hand” for bottom fishing. The beauty of putting a live sardine on a jig and sending it to the bottom is that EVERYTHING down there eats them. The beauty of sending a pinfish, grass grunt or sailors choice to the bottom is that everything down there would love to eat them, but can’t. They can’t get their mouths around the bigger baits, but the ones that can are the fish you want to catch. Go enjoy the bounty of the season!

BIG BOTTOM FISH ARE THE BOUNTY OF FALL

This is the time of year that can make even me look good. The large male gags have started staging up on nearshore structures, wrecks and traditional bait-holding bottom. The scamps and large snappers have started a transitional move to their deeper wintering grounds. Water temps will soon draw a line in the water that clearly shows you where to fish.

After all, that is why the gags are there. They are eating the same baits that you’re catching. They come inshore to a place that holds bait, so all the smaller females have plenty to eat while they are discussing

love spring and summer fishing, but let me say this loud and clear: I live for fall and winter fisheries!

Ahhhh, yeah! This is the time of plenty. Now is the time of year to have a community-sized fish stew to clear out all the vacuum-sealed stuff in the freezer. You’ve got to make some room for freezer-stuffing grouper, snapper and seabass.

You raise the flags of the fish just caught to show you weren’t skunked.

Yet, red drum in Florida’s Banana River don’t ever leave.

Anglers imparting the appropriate snap of the rod tip can mimic distressed bait sh on the surface, but it’s important to choose a lure with proper action for the conditions. When the Banana River becomes moderately choppy, loud topwater lures draw in predators. On calm days, it is better to sh a quieter walking lure.

Since these reds aren’t tailing, spotting them means you’re looking for wakes. Mature red sh push wider wakes at a steady pace in a straight line. Mullet make those darting V-shaped wakes.

FOR

Again, we all love to sh topwater, but distance-dedicated lures are in many cases the better option. In windy conditions with breaking waves and ripping currents, I de nitely prefer a 3-ounce plug or a 4-ounce darter over a topwater, which weighs half as much.

On a beach, with the lure on the sand, allow a banner of 50 to 70 percent of the rod’s length. is shorter banner limits the size of the belly in the line when you cast. e larger the line belly is, the more casting energy is taken from the lure’s ight, resulting in reduced distance.

Water conditions are another factor worth consideration. Big waves, whitewater and strong currents limit your control. ese conditions are also o en the best conditions for sh to bite. When you cast, engage the reel before the lure hits the water and reel up slack. is gives you a straighter line for better control of the lure, better swimming action and more direct contact with the lure. When you can feel the lure, you can feel the bite and ultimately increase your hook-setting ratio.

Typically, a long-distance model weighs 30 to 100 percent more than a oating one of similar dimensions. If a oating lure weighs 2 ounces, a similar sized distance-dedicated lure will weigh 3 to 4 ounces. at’s really a big deal, especially in wind.

LURES

Legendary angler Patrick Sebile is a world record holder and an award-winning designer of innovative lures and shing gear. Check out his creations at abandofanglers.com.

When you’re casting into the wind, you should also adjust the way you cast. In long-casting lingo, I use the term “banner” to refer to the section of line between the rod tip and the lure. You should limit the banner when you’re shing in wind. Instead of using an overhand cast, try a sidearm cast, which limits the lure’s exposure to the wind.

LURESLONG-CASTINGINTHEWIND

A long banner also reduces your control of the lure once it hits the water. A line belly in the water pulls your lure sideways on retrieve. You also won’t be in direct contact with the lure. is a ects the lure’s action, and you might also miss bites.

If the wind is full force into your face, this adds drag on the lure and line during a cast. A high-density lure cuts through wind more e ciently than a oating lure. Everyone loves shing topwaters, but in windy conditions they are not the best choice. A denser lure always casts farther than a oating lure.

the past few months, we’ve discussed almost everything concerning long-distance lures. We’ve touched on elements an angler can control such as lure choice and the proper rod, reel and line con guration. Now I want to discuss the uncontrollable elements of weather and water conditions. ey play a big role in how far you are able to cast and how e ectively you can sh a lure.

ese sharks are viviparous, meaning the pups develop inside the female’s body, unlike other sharks that lay egg sacks. Most pups will be le in shallow nurseries due to the high amount of prey and few predators, which increases their chances of survival.Fishing for blacktip sharks is fairly easy; however, there are days when they can be nicky. Paying attention to speci cs can increase your number of bites. On clear-water days, sharks tend to stay just on the backside of the last sandbar. Before blacktips begin migrating for the mating season, they will actually be in gendersegregated schools that come together only for mating. Blacktips tend to be separated due to the male’s highly aggressive drive towards the females, which could result in serious injury.

e Blue Tilapia is considered invasive to the United States. It was introduced to Florida in the 1960s by stocking and experimental studies by both private and state entities. Tilapia are here to stay and can be found in a wide variety of locations, from lakes and ponds scattered around the state to many freshwater and brackish rivers and streams. For anglers, canals found in almost every neighborhood can be shing paradise.

Tilapia can be nicky eaters, which poses a puzzle for anglers. eir diet consists mainly of green algae, diatoms and small invertebrates. I have witnessed other anglers catching this species on corn, dog food, hot dogs and bread balls. I have caught good numbers and some very large examples with a y rod. I caught most of these sh on Clouser Minnows and other similar small bait sh patterns.

e blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) is the most popular of the tilapia and the species most commonly found here in Florida. It is also a very important species in the sh-farming world due to its fast growth, salinity tolerance and the fact that it can be stocked densely. Tilapia have a long history. Farming of Nile tilapia goes back to ancient Egypt, and its importance is noted by the ancients using the sh as a symbol of rebirth.

Perhaps a lesser-known draw to the Sunshine State are the exotic species that have taken hold here. ese are the non-native, sometimes invasive species that would otherwise require expensive travel for anglers to target. ey are here, so we might as well sh for them.

I’m sure everyone reading this can target blue tilapia within a short distance of home. ey are great ghters that stand toe-to-toe with any species of similar size.

fishing, a technique of fishing where we drop live or dead baits to the bottom next to a shipwreck, also makes for good action this time of year. Warsaw grouper, one of the biggest groupers we catch in Fort Lauderdale, are stacking up and making home around shipwrecks and bottom structures. Warsaw groupers average upwards of 50 pounds, much larger than most groupers average. Black grouper, amberjack, and cobia are other bottom fish that you may catch wreck fishing in October.  Just a little further offshore, shark fishing can be good this month for some of the most exotic sharks we catch out here, thresher and mako sharks.

season is here and it’s starting off with a bang! The sailfish this season are biting voraciously. Already we’re catching numbers that we usually don’t see until the middle of winter. Kite fishing on the blue/green color change, just a mile offshore, is all but a sure thing for sailfish. This is a great time of year for big game action, with just about every trip catching one or more sailfish 6-8 feet in length. Sailfish are the most sought-after gamefish in the ocean, and people come from all around the world to take part in the great sailfishing that we have off the Fort Lauderdale coast. These sailfish migrate in a stretch of water, between 100-250 feet deep, that we call “Sailfish Alley”. Pop the kites in this zone with some lively goggle eyes and get ready for action. Kite fishing is a method of live baiting by suspending your baits from kites, keeping them suspended directly on the top of the water struggling, making fish in distress vibrations. It’s a very effective way to catch sailfish and other top water gamefish. When you are kite fishing, you can also catch tuna, dolphin, kingfish, and big game sharks. All of these species are biting this month and can be caught out there.  Wreck

To narrow down that “one” caliber for the South there is no better choice than the 243 Winchester. What’d you say? Not the 308, 30-06, 7mm Mag, 300 Win Mag, or 6.5’s? No, the 243 Winchester is all you need!

This caliber is near perfect for “this” region. Remember reality, we are not talking about the Northern States or Western States. Home is here. The 100-grain projectile, bullet that the 243 Winchester uses comes in every variety. From predator/varmint bullets to big game; deer, hog, and even black bear rounds. Ammunition is readily available and affordable. The accuracy and effectiveness are almost perfect. The 243 Winchester has a very minimal amount of recoil and with the lighter weight of the rifles of this caliber, they are not an issue when carried in the field all day. Range and practice sessions will be enjoyable to hone those marksmanship skills. For our area, there is no better choice than this old, but very proven caliber for the sportsmen of this era.

of the biggest mistakes a rifleman or hunter makes is their choice in which caliber of rifle will be the best match for what they will be using it for. Now, there really is not a lot that goes into this discussion. People tend to make their choices in this based on their fantasy and not their reality. The reality is there is no perfect choice for a “do it all” rifle, there just isn’t. Gun writers, outdoors writers, and manufacturer’s reps have all come up with thousands of articles on the best all-around choice. There isn’t one! Your style of hunting and where you are going to pursue your game is what you should consider when you make that decision. For the reality of it, not the fantasy, let’s just focus on where we live, the South; Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and we will also go with South Carolina.

Peacock bass become the most aggressive in their eating patterns starting in the fall; this is when they are bulking up the most to get ready for winter and then jump right into their spawning season. Largemouth bass also come out of hiding from their summer homes and feed heavily as they are the first to spawn in the coming months.

Fall fishing offers many opportunities to throw topwater for peacock and largemouth bass. My leading topwater choices are a chug-bug, prop baits, (Heddon, Yo-Zuri, and Rapala make them) and the Rebel Jumping Minnow in bone color or any walking bait in bone color.  If topwater doesn’t do it for you, my favorite fall subsurface lures are jerk-baits such as the Shimano World Minnow 115SP or a YoZuri 3D Minnow. Fall is also a unique time where the eelgrass is still nice and thick from its summertime growing, and you can throw a fast-moving weedless fluke or speed worm through the eelgrass or hydrilla and get some good numbers of fish in a short amount of time. As usual, I find myself throwing the fly rod around a lot and have found any small all-white or chartreuse and white combinations work extraordinarily well for peacock, largemouth, and even panfish!

Fall is my absolute favorite time to fish because that is when the bite is at its peak for most of South Florida. The weather becomes manageable to fish all day, and it’s just a time of year when the bite is consistently good. Unlike the summer, where we get lots of rain and water level fluctuations, October is the beginning of some weather consistency. For South Florida, that only really happens this time of the year and in the spring. We carry a little bit of that typical Florida Summer heat but will finally start to feel some of that winter cool down.

Before

we jump into the fishing report, I had the opportunity to fish in Brazil for some peacock bass and learn more about them. I went with the Amazon Legend, and it was a fantastic experience. I will be offering a group trip of up to 7 people in 2023. It offers fine dining and exclusive access to the best fisheries in the Amazon. If you’re interested in going on this trip, please email me for more information. Now let’s get to the fishing report!

Live bait is always a great option, especially fishing with kids. Start them out young with a container of red wiggler worms on a small gold hook and let them catch everything from cichlids to bluegills and much more. When taking your kids fishing, I always recommend trying to find a productive spot in advance. Also, only stay for a reasonable time period that holds their attention to avoid them getting bored and viewing the sport negatively for the future. I love to see young anglers fall in love with fishing to the point where they’re begging to go again!

If you cast the bait in the middle of the school, you have a much lower chance of catching the fish following the schools. Using this method, you will catch snook, tarpon, bluefish, jacks, redfish, barracudas, blacktip and spinner sharks, even kingfish within a couple hundred yards off the surf.

gear and pull out the trident kite rod to do some kite fishing! Dolphin, kingfish, tuna, and wahoo can all be landed on the kite this time of the year. Plus, kite fishing brings an element of surprise, and you never know which species is going to eat your kite bait next. Keep in mind, mullet is an excellent bait to use while kite fishing. Also, an abundant number of wahoo will still be here throughout the month and you still have a good opportunity to catch one whether you are highspeeding, kite fishing, slow trolling, or regular trolling. Good luck out there and get out there when the mullet run is in full swing- it’s a BLAST!

On the beach, spinner sharks will be relatively easy to locate. Scan the beach and drive your boat along the coast especially between Palm Beach Inlet and Jupiter inlet looking for jumping sharks. Once located, start chumming and get some baits out. Live bait is great, but big chunks of bonita and barracuda will work. You should be looking for sea turtles and large sharks in shallow water too, cobia will be following them! Bottom shing and jigging the deep water wrecks o Boca, Boynton, or Palm Beach will yield big sh; ajs, kings, mutton snapper, Spanish mackerel, grouper, and wahoo are all on the list.

Find some moving water or current, and throw that live bait or arti cial under the docks, against seawalls, pilings, bridges, etc. For snook and tarpon, I like to use Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow Lip Divers; trolling or just casting around structure. If the water is dirty, use dark colored lures and if the water is clear use light colored arti cial lures.

Anglers, March madness has arrived which means the shing should o er plentiful action for a variety of species inshore and o shore this month! e sea temperatures will be warming up and cool fronts will begin to zzle out as the month progresses. e wind will be your biggest rival because March is considered a transitional month as we head into the beginning of spring. O shore, sail sh will be a likely catch in the beginning of March, but large numbers of migrating sails are already south of Palm Beach waters. On the bright side, the mahi mahi bite should improve. If we have a steady easterly wind, this should prompt you to rig some ballyhoo and head o shore. Look for conditions such as edges, temperature breaks, rips, and debris.

TIP: Anglers following the schools on the beach should cast out a live mullet towards the outside of the school and have your reel in the free line position. You should hook the mullet in the mouth or behind the dorsal fin to create

enjoying a month of flat calm seas and windless days during our summer months, it’s finally time to say goodbye. The water temperatures will gradually be decreasing and slowly adjusting to the norms for the fall/winter months ahead. The falling sea temperatures trigger the natural instincts of the remarkable and renowned mullet run. The migrating mullet travel south along the Atlantic coast to the southern point of Florida, where they head offshore to breed and feed on grasses and algae. So, what does this mean? Every type of predator fish will be munching on mullet! As mullet migrate, they stay in large schools, making them irresistible to all predators including most pelagic fish. Immense amounts of mullet can be found throughout the ICW and in the surf, just look for big black masses in the water along the beach. Early mornings and late evenings are the best times to sneak up on a school of mullet and cast net your share of live bait.

this ledge and then went to check out the blue holes in the deeper water. It was beautiful, but since a storm looked like it was getting close, we decided to head in. When I was swimming in, it became extremely difficult to move. The current was too fast, even with huge freediving fins, I was having trouble. We were making slow progress when I saw a huge fan coral with the biggest hog of the day there. I couldn’t resist and shot it immediately. I knew there were sharks in the area, and with the current as fast as it was, I was a little nervous. After a couple minutes of extremely hard kicking, I made it back in and we had one of the best meals that night. There truly is nothing more fun than going to the Bahamas!

I was so happy to end summer off with a bang and go to the Bahamas! We went to the West End and stayed at Old Bahama Bay with a couple of friends. We got to the beaches of West End and were welcomed with bunches of sea turtles and sting rays. My friends and I grabbed our snorkel gear, went off the reef and saw some of the most beautiful fish and rock structures. We found a couple lobsters but didn’t take any since the next few days we would get a lot. The next day we looked for some conch and did some spearfishing. We looked for hog fish in shallow water, but we couldn’t find any, so we went to a huge ledge in about 40 feet of water. There were many hogs there and we came back with 3 in the cooler. Just before returning, I was unwillingly welcomed by a very big tiger shark that came to check us out. After that we went to this island with stingrays and cooked hot dogs and had a great snack at the beach. The next day we hired a local Bahamian to take us out lobstering, spearfishing for hogs, and mutton fishing. He knew the local waters like the back of his hand, it was amazing. After, we took the golf cart out and we happened to stumble upon the tip of the island where no houses were. There was about 2 feet of reef sticking out the water and when we went down to look at the tide pools, we could see blue holes. Amazed by this, we decided to grab our gear and spears and check it out. I’ve never seen anything even close to how beautiful this reef was. This truly was something you see in movies. The rocks were lined with coral, snappers all around, different structures, it was amazing. We swam out of the rocks, so we didn’t get cut up and were surprised with a drop off around 8 feet. We saw a decent sized bull shark right away, then suddenly, a couple tarpon and huge permit swam right by me. We followed

On the freshwater, the fishing is really going to be heating up, as the fish are not spawning, only feeding, and this is going to lead to schooling fish demolishing schools of shad out in the middle of the lake. Pay attention to the surface of the water and you should see sunshine bass and largemouths at dawn and dusk blowing up the bait. Don’t think for a second that big peacocks won’t go out to the middle of the lake and do the same thing. In the early morning and evening, small topwater propbaits and walkers can get you some awesome action. I recommend keeping them on the smaller side. Crank baits and jerk baits will also produce and not much feels better than a big fish slamming one. For flyfishing, I really like to use an intermediate or sinking line and a Clouser, trying different colors until one gets bit.

We used the trolling motor to quietly make our way towards the mangroves hoping to get a glimpse of a red, snook, trout, ounder, or any inshore species willing to bite. As we approached the shore, we noticed another bull shark working the shore and of course I had to make a cast or two at him, but he had no interest in my o ering. We kept working the shore and nally it happened for Neil!!! He made a long cast and almost as soon as the lure hit the water, he was on with a nice sh, but we couldn’t see what it was. He started gaining ground getting it closer; enjoying the ght and then it happened! e sh came unbuttoned and at this point I was like dude, what did you do in a previous life to deserve this??? We made our way toward a dock that I know holds snook. I made a long cast and right then I was hooked up with a huge sh. It was a big snook; I got her to the boat, revived her, and released her to ght another day. Success! I said, “let’s go to lunch and call it a day”. I asked Neil if he was hungry and then he disclosed to me that he ate a banana for breakfast! Neil knows not to bring bananas on the boat (it’s bad luck), but it didn’t occur to him that the curse would remain in e ect with it digesting in his stomach. Myth con rmed or was it bad luck? He should’ve brought his lucky rabbit foot!!!

Hi

and welcome to the inshore forecast for October. I was starting to think we wouldn’t make it through the summer heat but finally we’ve entered the month that we should feel the first cool breezes. By now the mullet run should have started and maybe even passed by which isn’t a problem as it tends to leave a small population behind and less competition. October is one of my favorite months for big fish and variety; we’re talking giant jacks, giant tarpon, and some big snook too. The rigging can’t get much easier, as you’re going to need a cast net from 8 to 12 feet and be able to throw it. Then, a large sized spinning rod combo, loaded up with some beefy line; I would recommend 50-pound plus. I fish a lot of 80-pound mono leader this time of the year with a circle hook to match the bait, 6/0-9/0. The process is pretty

Good luck out there!

A er the “Shark Week” experience, we continued to struggle so I decided to implement Plan C and move from the east side of the Indian River to the west side. I’ve had some nice shing on the west side with trout, reds, and snook. We made our way across the river stopping at another spoil island only to be greeted with a jack attack. I landed several jacks and Neil hooked one that got o . His skunk was still intact but with jacks around I gured that would change. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

simple, one way is net the mullet and slow bump troll it behind the boat around bridges, channels, and the inlet. Another method is to go to some of the same areas and just allow the tide to carry you along while you free line these baits. Keep an eye out for fish exploding and feeding on any mullet pods on the surface and introduce your mullet into the mix. This can also be a great time to throw artificials; anything in a large bait fish pattern like Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows or Hydro Pencils, Heddon Zara Spooks, and pretty much any kind of popper of reasonable size should work

The peacock bass bite has been great!

Jim and Shawn caught a very nice snook.

happy.

Typically, I don’t believe in superstitions, but a er a recent shing trip with my buddy Neil, I may be a believer!!! e morning started slow; I caught a small snapper and small snook. Neil was in skunk mode, so we decided to try a spoil island where I’ve caught some trout, snook, and a gag grouper on a prior trip. To our dismay it was dead as well. Just as we were about to exit stage le , Neil was working a topwater lure back to the boat when what appeared to be a large bull shark came up from the bottom and tried to hammer the lure. Unbelievably it totally missed the lure and disappeared. It was impressive to witness such a big specimen of a sh take a swipe at the lure.

October brings cooler weather and the long awaited mullet run. Snook, tarpon, redfish, and trout will all be cooperating this month. Matching the hatch is the way to go this time of year. Heddon Super Spooks, D.O.A. Bait Busters, and Jerk Baits will be the goto baits. When there is so much bait available to predators it is sometimes hard to get a bite on your presentation. Try going with a less natural color that stands out in the pack. Focus your cast on the edges of the mullet schools and you will do well.

See you on the water!

The fall dolphin run should be in full effect this month. Look for them to start to move into shallower water compared to their summer patterns. The bottom bite has been particularly good to us during the fall months. Look to target mutton snapper and yellowtail snapper in 80-100 feet of water. I like using mullet this time of year for both bottom fishing and trolling. It is readily available and a great hardy bait to keep alive on your kayak.Check

WPBFC member Brian Komer and team BeachKomer went into the final full moon fishing day with points already on the board. They did not catch a fish in the first leg of the series in July but landed a 17.8-pound wahoo in the second leg in August. BeachKomer followed this up with a special day offshore during the final September full moon fishing day. While docking to weigh-in at Sailfish Marina that morning, Brian jokingly announced, “I did a thing.” He was subtly hinting toward the fact they caught three wahoo that day, one being the single largest fish of the series at 52.1 pounds. Having caught a wahoo already in the series, BeachKomer logged a series aggregate of 69.9 pounds and put some serious pressure on teams competing for the title of Series Champions.

35.2 pound

A total of 16 different teams caught a wahoo throughout the series, and more than 70 teams fished one or more legs of the series. It’s always fun to get on the water to fish and compete as a club. Thank you to everyone who fished and to all our sponsors for supporting the Full Moon Wahoo Series and the historic West Palm Beach Fishing Club.

The West Palm Beach Fishing Club (WPBFC) concluded its 6th annual Full Moon Wahoo Series in early September, as teams once again dialed in their best trolling tactics, pushing each other to compete during the final leg of the three-part series.

Steppin’ Out Step S u p: Series Concludes

Catching three wahoo in one day is truly impressive; catching a wahoo on all three legs of the series is equally, if not more challenging. Teams were only eligible to weigh one fish each moon. The crew with the most weight logged from all three moons would be named Series Champions.

Full Moon Wahoo

WPBFC member Christian Mignano and team Steppin’ Out logged a wahoo in both July and August. They were just one of two teams do to this. Entering the final leg with a well-earned lead over the rest of the fleet, it was up to them to seal the deal with one more fish toward their aggregate total.

In an unconventional fashion, they would hook their final wahoo trolling a simple blue & white Iland Jr. skirted over a rigged ballyhoo, fished from the rigger. Christian described this classic presentation as “old faithful.” This hungry wahoo eating this easy bait is testament to the theory behind the series, these fish bite around the full moons! Successfully landing this 16.1-pound wahoo was enough to bring their series aggregate total to 82.1 pounds, earning them the title of Series Champions! Steppin’ Out got it done catching fish off a shotgun bait, one on the planer, and lastly out of the rigger in what they’re calling a “spread slam.” A huge congrats goes out to these guys for consistently catching their targeted species each moon.

Last call for swordfish! This is the last month when the wind may be calm enough to head 20 miles out. The fall is when the monster females come to breed in the “Straights” of Florida. Fish in the 400lb plus range will be landed this time of year. You better be on your game! Gaffs and harpoons are a must. A block & tackle is not a bad idea to have on the vessel either. It can be very difficult to get a fish that size over the gunnels. If you hook a beast, prepare for a long fight. I’m talking hours, and that can take a toll on any seasoned angler. Well, I have given you some good tips – it is up to you to get off the couch and go fishing!

Heading out to the reef?  Mullet works great for bottom fishing. Muttons, yellowtails, and amberjacks love to eat mullet. Presentation should be long leaders and light sinkers. A 2/0 hook is ideal. Anglers should be matching the sinker to the tide speed. 2/3 knots = 2 oz egg. Fish on!

Hello and welcome to the Coastal Angler Magazine October fishing report for the water out of Palm Beach Florida. The mullet run will be top news this month. Massive schools will be moving through our waters, and game fish will be following. Tarpon, huge jacks, snook, and sharks will be gorging on these bait fish. The plan is to cast net a live well full of bait and start to fish. Present your baits away from the school to get the bite. You want to make it look like a straggler of the mass. Fishing beneath the school or slow trolling it outside the school is best. Light leaders and small strong hooks will be the key. When hooked up on a tarpon, be ready to chase that fish down. They will jump in the beginning, then will want to swim to the bottom. When it comes up for a gulp of air, try putting the rod tip down in the water to stop it from doing this. Every gulp is more energy to keep the fight going. Remember, we are fighting for fun, but the tarpon is fighting for it’s life.  Good luck!

Offshore will be holding dolphin on the weed lines. Head offshore with a run/gun method. Only fish weeds that hold bait. If you find large patches, try the chunking method. Dolphin like to hang deep when

The snook fishing will be excellent as mullet schools continue to roam our local waters. Seawalls, docks, and bridges are great areas to target snook.

Jake with a snook ready for release.

The Intracoastal Waterway from Jupiter to Palm Beach offers a plethora of species to target. Jacks, sheepshead, sharks, tripletail, mackerel, ladyfish, and even the pesky bluefish are prevalent all through our local area. Rapala Skitter Walks and D.O.A. C.A.L. 3-inch Shads are both perfect choices for steady action. Find structure or bait schools and the predator fish will be there ready to eat.

Boats and vessels are accepted at the landfill for a fee after all fuels, flares, batteries and other hazardous materials are removed by the owner or hauler. Removing under-floor fuel tanks, when possible, is recommended. Boats will be inspected by SWA staff prior to disposal. October Reminder! Recycle Moving Extras

But, October is a month of change. Even here on the edge of the tropics, those long, golden summer days have faded to memory. Daylight is gradually becoming a much more valuable commodity, especially for those of us who make our living outdoors and on the water.

Fall is on the move, and we’re already seeing migrations of baitfish and birds, manatees, and manta rays. And car carriers - don’t forget about the car carriers. A telltale sign of the start of the annual snowbird migration.

As we slide through October and into something that feels a bit more like autumn, there are some great opportunities to get outdoors and learn about our area! One of these opportunities is LagoonFest, scheduled for November 5th in Downtown West Palm Beach.

during the off season, when rates are low, and traffic is minimal. We also prefer the Mid-Keys and just around where the highway switches from two lanes to one. This works out perfect as it lines up with one of the best Florida fishing destinations – Islamorada and the famous Islamorada Hump!

Healthy bull mahi and what beautiful colors on this fish!

Captain TJ proved to be an expert at the run and gun game. The day we had was absolutely perfect for a day offshore. Smooth calm, and flat as glass. Great for sightseeing but not always the best conditions for fishing. Mahi as do most pelagics like it rough! When the water is too calm, they tend to go deep and sulk. They prefer the higher oxygen content and over-active bait associated with wind and current. This would be a tough day scouting but Captain TJ was up to the task. He spent his time in the tower scouting weed lines, promising rips, and currents. He instructed on when and where to pitch rigged ballyhoo on spin gear for slow trolling and when to bring them in. After several tries with no results, our luck changed, and everyone hooked up with some decent sized hens! We got the first round to the boat and Anthony did an expert job gaffing and pitching our mahi into a barrel. Captain TJ quickly called down to ask if they were all female which they were, then took us back to scout for the bull. With two more hookups, it happened. The call came for a quick pitch port side with live bait. I happened to be the lucky angler and a beautiful bull mahi rocketed from the water – Fish On! After landing this amazing fish we determined we had enough for the table and headed in early. Although we could have limited out, we decided to leave some for the next crew. Always practice conservation! These are special fish that deserve our consideration.

I immediately warmed up to Captain TJ when he asked, “what would you like to catch for dinner?” He also offered us the opportunity for a complete experience and whether we wanted a first mate on board or would like to do it ourselves. We opted out on the first mate as one of our crew –Captain Anthony Dallavalle, was aboard and would handle the cockpit tasks and gaffing. The rest of our crew consisted of my good friend and fishing partner Mark Tafuri and his daughter Danielle – Anthony’s spouse.

Roughly twenty miles offshore, this storied location holds an abundance of fish and especially pelagics like tuna, wahoo, and mahi. Our target species would be something for the table as it is a longstanding event for us to eat what we catch and have it prepared family style at any of the fantastic local restaurants. Enter Captain TJ Zinkland with Heavy Guns Fishing. He is a highly regarded local captain born in south Florida that knows the fishery extremely well. He also has the perfect sled for the “run-and-gun” game so popular here in Florida. A 36’ Contender Center Console with triple Merc 300’s!

Once back at the dock we watched our Captain filet the fish while giving expert advice. Although I’ve fileted many a fish, it is always great to watch a seasoned pro. He also showed us how to cut the mahi bellies to

Lots of great eats for a family style dinner.

We started our day at 6:30am and with the captain already prepped and ready for action. It’s important to get out early in the Keys – especially when targeting mahi, as the first boats often see the best action. TJ made short

work of the trip out as his Contender has a super stable, dry, and sure-footed ride. TJ has all the gear needed for success including a spread of rods sized appropriately for whatever we might catch. We expressed an interest in live bait fishing and made a quick stop that produced more than enough bait. We also had an array of fresh dead local baits such as ballyhoo and squid –perfect for targeting mahi. The live bait would be used for pitching to finicky fish – especially the larger bulls.

We were at the hump within thirty minutes and already there was a crowd. The Islamorada Hump rises to within 290 feet of the surface and creates many desirable rips and currents to fish. We got into a steady rotation and trolling pattern these experienced captain’s practice. Our first target of the day –delicious and fun to catch blackfin tuna! Within minutes of deploying a spread of artificial chuggers and feathers there were two nice blackfins on the deck – enough for sashimi appetizers and we were anxious to search the weed lines for mahi, so we pulled up and headed further offshore.

Bass fishing tournament anglers have found that it takes 5 bass that weigh 25 to 30 pounds to win a tournament on the lake. The numbers of quality-sized bass in the 5 to 10-pound range in the lake right now are staggering, and these bass are growing each season getting bigger and fatter.

There really aren’t any secrets. The best anglers in the world are those who spend their time on the water constructively, dissecting depth and cover changes like a surgeon, taking advantage of every possible angle to get the most out of each area that may hold bass. Many amateurs, however, will stay in an area that is not producing for them, especially if they have caught bass there before; know when to move and be decisive about your game plan, all keys to success. great fishing continues on Lake Okeechobee. The big lake has been on an upward swing for a couple of years now and just keeps getting better. The lake level has not had highs above 14 feet for a couple of years now and each winter we have seen low levels around 11-12 feet. The somewhat stable low water periods have led to numerous great spawns that have exploded the fish populations of every species in the lake.

During the summer months, we try to get onto the water before sunup, if possible, in order to take advantage of schooling action that takes place along the outside grass lines. Bass can be seen and heard blasting bait fish, such as shad and shiners, in the cover and sometimes well out into the lake. When they are schooling on bait, a spinner tossed well back into the grass and worked toward the outside edge can present heart-stopping action. Some mornings we catch 8 to 12 bass, and the action ends quickly, other days we may witness 35 to 40 in the first couple of hours. The catching can end in a second and the rhyme or reason eludes me but the sun rising higher into the sky is certainly one reason. Once they quit eating the spinner bait, we switch to soft plastics, flukes, speed worms, and Senkos being a crucial part of our arsenal. Those anglers who

In the past, we have experienced many great years of pan fishing. This year has provided some of the best summertime catches of shellcracker I can ever remember. Of course, the big bluegill are caught in the same areas as the shellcracker, but anyone that has eaten freshly caught and fried shellcracker filets know exactly what I am alluding to. The tremendous run of shellcracker started on the full moon in April and has continued on each moon phase up through August. How long it can and will continue remains to be seen. With the water level in the 11 to 12-foot range, the pan fish stayed mostly to the outside edges of the vegetation, some even fanning spawning beds well out into the lake, where the water is still only 2 to 3 feet. The primary baits have been grass shrimp, red worms, and crickets. Many anglers

Now for methods you may not have tried while targeting snook. Let’s visit our friends in the freshwater aisle and pull out an old favorite: the Rat-L-Trap! Pick up a few of these in chrome and blue, buy some stout saltwater-grade treble hooks, stainless steel split rings, and you’re set. ese noisy, rattling hard baits drive big snook crazy. I sh these on a fast and steady retrieve. e simplicity, in itself, is enticing. Among the advantages are the castability of these lures, their bullet-proof construction, and best of all there is not much skill required in this tactic. Simply cast and reel at a fast pace and hold on tight. When a hungry, or mad snook nails a Trap as you burn it through salty water, they will try their best to take the lure and the rod from your hands. ere is nothing like a 40-inch snook hammering a fast-moving Rat-L-Trap!

My other tip involves a color I haven’t seen pictured with many, if any, snook other than those anglers in my circle. e color is in the orange family with gold glitter and a chartreuse tail. is little gem has produced numerous snook over the years. I sh this color in a 5-inch paddletail lure, typically on a heavier jighead. I like a heavy head because I burn these swimbaits through the water.

Photo courtesy of Knockin Tail Lures

I hope this new look at snook shing helps you catch your next e theme here is sound attracts sh. So, tie on some noisy lures and get hooked up!

Here’s my disclaimer: I invented Knockin Tail Lures. e paddletail I use for snook is the Knockin Tail Lure in the Halloween is lure, like the Rat-L-Trap, has a built-in rattle. Trust me,

CATCH BIG SNOOK

hen it comes to snook shing with lures, I typically see the same color patterns and lure styles displayed in the jaws of caught sh as the angler proudly presents their catch to the camera. I’d like to share some new colors and lures that I have found to be very e ective when targeting solid-lined trophies.Let’s start with what you might already know. Feather jigs are popular among those who pursue line-siders. Some may tip their jig with a grub of some sort, while others take the simple approach of feathers, lead and a sharp hook. More o en than not, when I see these jigs pinned in the jaws of magni cent sh, the colors are typically white, red, chartreuse or a combination of all three. I don’t typically throw a feather jig, but when I do I prefer to tip it with a paddletail to give it extra vibration. Find one with a rattling tail, and you just increased your odds of hooking up!

Whether diving or trapping, it is illegal to harvest claws from eggbearing females. It is permitted to take both claws if they are of legal length, but most people choose to take just one so the crab is le with something to feed and defend itself with.

Recreational harvesters age 16 and older who plan to use traps are required to complete an annual no-cost trap registration at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com. rough this process, they will obtain trap registration numbers that must be included on each trap along with the owners name and address.

Diving and snorkeling for stone crabs is also popular. Look for crushed shells in front of holes in the rocks or reef where a stone crab has been feeding. Use a tickle stick with angle of less than 90 degrees to pull them out of the hole and grab them by the claws with gloved hands.

stone crab season opens Oct. 15 and runs through May 1. e minimum claw size is 2 7/8 inches, and recreational harvesters may take a daily bag limit of 1 gallon of claws per person or 2 gallons of claws per vessel, whichever is less.

Last, but not least, we fished Skilak Lake, which feeds the Kenai River from the center of the peninsula. This was my favorite place to fish. It is as beautiful as it is full of fish. We stayed 18 days in Alaska and spent our 17th on Skilak, where we slayed the fish. We landed and released more than 100 reds, silvers and trout that day! It was a great note to end our trip.

Second only to the Kenai’s fishing is the scenery. There is a majestic feel to this area. The views are beautiful, there is amazing wildlife and tons of stuff to see. We saw it all as we drove all over the place chasing fish.

If you ever get the chance to fish the Kenai Peninsula, you will love it. Get a group of friends, do some research and go. Fish with a guide or on your own. There are so many options and so many fish that it’s hard not to have an amazing adventure.

Gary Turner is a long-time contributor to The Angler Magazine. Contact him at gary@purgeright.com.

Our lodging was in Soldotna, near the mouth of the Kenai River on Cook Inlet. That’s where we fished the Kenai River for red (sockeye) salmon. The famous king salmon season closed before we arrived this year, or we would have been fishing for them. We “flossed” for reds, which is a technique used in rivers to catch salmon that are more interested in their spawning run than they are in feeding. Basically, you use a weighted leader. As pods of fish swim upstream, the line threads an open mouth and you snag the fish when the hook pulls tight. This was combat-style fishing. We stood a rod’s length from other anglers, and it was mayhem when someone hooked up.

We also ventured south from Soldotna to the Kasilof River and caught salmon and trout. We crossed the peninsula to Seward and fished the Resurrection River for silvers, pinks and dog (chum) salmon. The river was full of fish, so we fished until it was too dark to see the bears and called it a day at midnight.

Catch Amazing Action on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula

laska’s Kenai Peninsula is a world-renowned fishery, known for all of its salmon runs, of which the Kenai River king salmon run is the most famous. The saltwater fishing out of Homer, Deep Creek and Seward are also amazing. I’ve been to Alaska fishing several times, and this year I fished the fresh and the salt with five friends who were all on their first trip. Here’s a quick look at what we did in freshwater. I’ll write about our saltwater adventures in the future.

We also fished from a boat on the Kenai River, where anchored to deploy small Kwikfish. These lures settle into the current near the bottom and vibrate. Fish swimming upstream see them and attack. Unlike the red salmon, which aren’t interested in eating, the pink (humpback) and silver (coho) salmon jumped all over this setup.

Twice, we traveled northeast by van to Hope, Alaska, where we fished for pinks in Resurrection Creek. They were so thick that we stayed busy catching and releasing them after we all caught our limits. On our second trip to Resurrection, we went in search of silvers but they had not arrived yet, so we caught pinks

“A productive day is relative. When you’re throwing a 10-foot 7-weight and a 250-grain full sinking line with 3 feet of 20-lb. monofilament, you’re not really going for numbers anymore,” said McCrickard. “You’re looking for one, maybe two fish. You kind of have to go out there with the mentality of, ‘I might get skunked today, but I might catch my best fish of the year… or the best fish I’ve caught in the last five years.’”

FOR AGGRESSIVE FALL BROWN TROUT

On a big tailwater, McCrickard gears up with 250-grain sinking line and runs a short 3-foot leader of 0x tippet. If the water is dingy, he’ll fish 3 feet of straight 20-pound monofilament.

“If I have that fish that’s two feet or larger, I’m feeling really confident having that fish on 20-pound as opposed to having it on 2x,” he said.

AggressiveTactics

The timing is different on every piece of water, but October is thought to be the peak of pre-spawn behavior for most streams and rivers. Since big browns are more aggressive than they are at any other time of year, anglers who target them should fish aggressively.

12 NATIONAL OCTOBER 2022 COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

L

ust and jealousy make males of many species do stupid things they wouldn’t normally do. This is true for humans and whitetail deer, and it’s also true for brown trout, which grow aggressive this time of year as they gear up for the spawn.

Alex McCrickard has a go-big or go-home attitude when it comes to fall browns. He’s a former fly fishing guide and the current aquatic education coordinator for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. As the days grow shorter, McCrickard breaks out his heavy 6- and 7-weight rods to sling big streamers.Onsmaller streams, he’ll fish floating line with a 9-foot leader that tapers down to no lighter than 2x tippet. The long leader allows a weighted streamer to get down in the water column, and 2x has a breaking strength of about 10 pounds. It’s more than enough to handle the 14- to 20-inchers you might encounter in a creek or stream.

By Nick Carter

Across the East, brown trout spawn in a window that runs from midSeptember into December. Males and females of the species leave their summer lies to strike out upstream in search of spawning habitat. They are on the move and more visible to anglers than at any other time of year.

Nick Carter is author of “Flyfisher’s Guide to North Carolina & Georgia.” It is available on Amazon or by contacting the author at nsc8957@gmail.com.

While the females become preoccupied with cutting nests, called redds, on shallow gravel bars in moving water, the males put on bright colors to

advertise their suitability as mates. The big boys spar with each other for the opportunity to fertilize eggs. They become ornery, and are cocked to lash out at anything that catches their eye.

On large or small water, pre-spawn browns will hit bigger flies than you’d think they would. This could be a 2- to 3-inch-long Woolly Bugger on a mountain stream or a 6-inch-long articulated pattern on a big river. Either way, it’s a game of covering water persistently and presenting the fly to as many fish as possible.

IGFA all-tackle world record swordfish weighed 1,182 pounds. It was caught off the coast of Chile in 1953 by Louis Marron.

The angler, 59-year-old Cary Carney, was fishing aboard the 32-foot Willow B, which was captained by his son Brandon Carney. They were fishing in about 1,300 feet of water on Aug. 21, when the big broadbill ate a strip of albacore belly. They had the fish on an electric Diawa MP3000 reel, but a blown fuse rendered it inoperable. Carney buckled down and cranked the fish in by hand on 65-pound test line.

Carney’s swordfish crushed the previous state record by more than 60 pounds. The old record of 441 pounds had stood since 1979. The thing is, if they had hauled it in with the electric reel, it would not have qualified for the record. The

“He’s one of those old-school guys,” Brandon Carney said of his father for an article in the Raleigh News & Observer. “His arm might be hanging off, but he won’t let you know it. After about 30 minutes, it rose to about 20 feet below the surface and we could see how big it was.”

The beauty of Amber comes from the fossilized resin of trees. 40 million years ago, this resin was exuded by trees to heal damage to a branch or trunk. Endowed with the ability to produce negative ions, amber has been made into a variety of decorative objects; used in jewelry, and as a healing agent in traditional folk medicine. Baltic Amber from around the Baltic Sea also contains a higher percentage of succinite, which acts as an anti-inflammatory and an analgesic when worn against the skin.

he Baltic region is home to the largest known deposit of amber, dating from 44 million years ago (during the Eocene epoch). Amber is a unique gem; not only is it simply beautiful but also equips mankind with valuable data through its capacity to show us the past. It can preserve organic tissues of life forms, something both valued by scientists and gem collectors alike.
