CAST is the world’s largest fishing trade show. Each year one of the highlights of the show is the New Product Showcase, in which companies roll out their newest and best. Coastal Angler and The Angler were there at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center in July, sifting through all the offerings of the ICAST New Product Showcase. At the Orlando ICAST in July, Garmin blew the lid off the electronics industry with the introduction of its new Panoptix LiveScope. At the world’s largest sportfishing trade show, the most anticipated event each year is the New Product Showcase, in which companies present their latest and greatest in hopes of being named Best of Category. Awards are decided by a vote of media in attendance, and the Panoptix Livescope was not only awarded “Best Electonics,” it was named “Best of Show” out of 974 new products introduced in 2018. “To not only win the ICAST Best Electronics award, but the Best of Show award, too—it’s an honor we’re incredibly proud of,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “Panoptix LiveScope delivers the best of both scanning and live sonar technologies, and there’s nothing out there even close to it. These awards solidify our commitment to giving anglers and mariners the most innovative technology on the water, and they further strengthen our desire to be the top marine electronics brand in the world.” Panoptix LiveScope is a live-scanning sonar that gives anglers higher resolution and easier-to-interpret images of structure, bait and fish swimming below and around the boat than ever before. Garmin’s revolutionary Panoptix all-seeing sonar technology was the first to deliver live sonar images in real-time—forwards, backwards, sideways and below the boat—even while stationary. Now, thanks to the active scanning capabilities of Panoptix LiveScope, anglers can see images and movement so clear and precise that it’s even possible to distinguish between species of fish. “Panoptix changed the electronics game a couple of years ago,” said Jason Christie, Bassmaster Elite Series and Garmin pro. “Now, LiveScope is even taking it to the next level. The cool thing about it is the simplicity of it. What you see is what is there. The only picture that could be better is if you dive into the water with goggles, and I’m not sure that’s really even better.” Like other Garmin Panoptix transducers, LiveScope features two modes in one transducer—LiveScope Down and LiveScope Forward— and can be installed on a trolling motor or the transom. Depending on

the angler’s fishing preferences and techniques, LiveScope can easily be adjusted to change views. Point the LiveScope transducer down to see directly below the boat or forward to see around the boat. The Panoptix LiveScope system includes a compact GLS 10 sonar black box with an LVS32 transducer and a simple plug-and-play Garmin Marine Network connector for easy installation and integration with a compatible Garmin chartplotter. he Bahamas National Trust is the only non-governmental organization in the world mandated to manage a country’s entire national park system, which includes 32 national parks that protect over 2.2 million acres of Bahamian biodiversity. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park was the first National Park in The Bahamas and was the first to be designated as a “No Take” marine reserve in the wider Caribbean in 1986. Protected by The Bahamas National Trust since 1959, the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park provides a look back at how coral reefs once were and a glimmer of hope for the future. Seen from the surface, the waters of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park are enchanting, with more shades of blue than Crayola offers. The real magic, however, is under the water where vibrant reefs teem with life. This is the result of almost 60 years of protection as a marine park.

In 1986, the Bahamas National Trust took the bold step of making the park a no-take marine reserve. The success of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park for protecting populations of key species and preserving the health of coral reef ecosystems is a testament to the foresight of its founders, who recommended protecting an entire landscape. This includes islands, nearshore habitats, like mangroves and seagrass beds that serve as nursery areas for many species, inshore and offshore reefs, and deep-sea areas. In doing so, they recognized how all of these areas are connected and how effective conservation includes protecting intact ecosystems rather than small pieces. In the 1980s the idea of ecosystem protection was advanced further by making the park a refuge for marine life where any removal of marine life or other resources was prohibited. Active management of users by The Bahamas National Park, including patrols of the park and installation of moorings for visitors to prevent damage from anchoring in sensitive areas has further promoted conservation of the park, resulting in the healthy reefs and marine life that we see today. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is not without its threats, however, illegal poaching remains an issue in some parts of the park. As the wonders of the park attract more visitors, balancing ecosystem protection with visitor use is also a challenge. The case of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park highlights the ability of a large and well-managed marine park to not just preserve the beauty of an area, but also provide critical protection to marine life to maintain the delicate balance and health of coral reefs and other marine ecosystems. ahis, with their dazzling colors, are one of the most beautiful and tasty fish in the sea. They are pelagic and roam the open ocean, spawning year-round in the warm ocean currents. They reach sexual maturity quickly and spawn two to three times per year, releasing up to a million eggs. The good news is they are a fast-growing and abundant species, which makes them an ideal target for conservation-minded hunters. More good news—they are a perfect “starter fish” for anglers who want to give spearfishing a try. Most hook-and-line anglers are already experts at finding them, often looking for seaweed or floating debris. Whether you want to jump in because they are not biting, or you simply want to try something new, bluewater diving can be an exhilarating experience. When jumping on a weedline, you are treated to a beautiful sight of crystal blue water, bright orange Sargasso weed, and cute little jacks and sea creatures who will come by to check you out. It’s even more spectacular when you see the brightly colored mahi show up. They swim at the surface, so you don’t have to be an expert freediver to hunt them. They are not overly wary, if you don’t spook them. I always tell people, “pretend you are a log, and let them come to you.” Here are some tips for landing a mahi: 1. Use the right equipment. Even though you are at the surface, deeper water requires bluewater equipment with surface floatation (in case you spear a big one and it decides to go down). The float will do the work for you. Your local dive shop should be happy to advise you on the right set-up. 2. Use flashers and chum to increase your chances of attract-

ing them. Dive shops carry readymade flashers that hang from a float, or you can make your own (instructions online). 3. Move in a slow and relaxed way. Mahi are fast swimmers, reaching up to 55 mph, so if you do scare them, you will not catch them. 4. Extend your speargun slowly and take careful aim. If they are close and not moving fast, aim for the head (killshot). If they are far, aim for center mass. 5. As most anglers know, once on a line, mahis are fast, flashy and acrobatic. When speared, they sometimes make figure-eight moves, rather than swimming straight away from you like most other fish. Do not let them circle or make loops around you – just swim away from them and keep tension on the line. 6. Once a mahi is tired and ready to be subdued, hold it by the gills. 7. Once you’ve mastered spearing mahis with a speargun, you can try using a polespear for an added challenge. his is a good question. An answer, however, is not a simple matter, as there are some specific characteristics to be considered. Baitfish If you are using a fly that imitates the movements of a baitfish, it is recommended that where and when possible, you observe the behavior patterns of actual baitfish. How fast are they swimming? Are they swimming in schools or small groups when being chased by game fish? Are they stunned by game fish before being eaten as they are sinking, or in fishing lingo, “on the fall?” Most injured baitfish swim in a frenzied motion, so quick and short strips is the best retrieval method. In conditions where the baitfish are lazily swimming about, try a slower, longer strip to get your adversary’s attention. Keep in mind that baitfish always swim into the current. When fishing from a drifting boat, cast your fly up-current, let it sink and drift in the current until the fly swings at the boat’s stern into its wake. At the end of the drift, allow the fly to gyrate, lifelike, in the current for a few seconds before beginning stripping. This technique often results in a strike, so hang on! Crab or Shrimp If your intent upon attempting to imitate a crab or shrimp, make short, small strips giving the fly the look of a scurrying crab or shrimp. This move usually gets a fish’s attention. Upon spotting the game fish eyeing the fly and beginning his approach, stop the fly, allowing it to sit mo-

tionless. Then move it again in short spurts. This move often results in a hookup. Fish that follow the fly but don’t eat it? A very frustrating incident when saltwater fly fishing is when a fish follows the fly but refuses to strike. Many saltwater gamefish, slashing and contorting, will closely tail a fly right to the rod’s tip without taking the fly. It’s a very frustrating experience that often leads to the angler scratching his head and feeling totally hopeless. There is, however, an easy way to get a picky fish to take the fly. I call it “sweeping the fly.” When a fish has followed the fly to within a few feet of your rod tip (usually you’ll have 5 to 10 feet of line outside the rod tip), lower your rod tip and make a sweeping motion as if you were going to make a side-armed back cast. Don’t pull the fly out of the water, but keep it moving. On the sweep, the fly will move smoothly through the water, doing a great impersonation of a fidgety baitfish attempting to escape a predator. This move enjoys a high percentage of success. The trick is to exercise control over your emotions and not pull the fly from the fish’s mouth when it strikes. The hook set is always very close to you, so be prepared to allow the fish to run. That means being able to manage the fly line as it shoots through the guides.

hat might feel like the Black Friday of the sea to some used to feel like magic to me. My first lobster mini season commenced several years ago after a late shift at Da Big Kahuna in Fort Lauderdale. My best friend was notorious for “yessing” any last minute adventure I hit her with. When I texted her at 10 p.m. with, “Meet me at 15th street boat ramp at 11:15 with a bathing suit. Lobsties!” I knew she’d be in. She bought a lobster permit online and I clocked out. I could already see the coast peppered with navigator lights from the top of Beach Place as I ran down the stairs to my car, my apron strings trailing behind. I didn’t know much about this ‘mini-season’ buzz, except that it happened mid-summer at midnight and in our circle of friends, no girls

were allowed. I wanted in. After convincing my buddy I would be an asset, bribing him with Publix subs and reminding him that my playlists were unparalleled, he reluctantly told me when and where. I swapped my greasy uniform for a wetsuit and said yes to the cafecito the boys were passing around. The dock was jam packed with local hopefuls and empty hotel bags. It was 11:30 p.m., and the urgency of the night was palpable. This was to be taken more seriously than I expected. We fueled up the Palmetto, and it felt like New Years Eve riding out and counting down to midnight. Port Everglades was a wet version of I-95 at 5:30 p.m., but once east of the inlet, boats dispersed to their secret spots. Gareth gave me a crash course on the third lung and the tickle stick while I half listened and half marveled at the pools of light that broke the black of the Atlantic. I’m no stranger to a night swim, but it was my first night dive. I was determined to do my part in limiting out on spinies. Giddy with caffeine and adrenaline, I hopped in the water with three buddies. The familiar water I knew by day wasn’t confettied with colorful fish, it was a pitch black treasure chest and it was alluring. I followed my friends’ beams of light and their lead. I marveled at watching the bugs crawl across the sea floor and bury themselves beneath ledges. I tallied up the ones I let get away and knew I would be back next year to make up for it. We climbed the ladder back onto the boat. I lay in a beanbag chair on the bow, and we bobbed around watching Fort Lauderdale sparkle— half from cars cruising A1A, half from lights of the community with salt in their blood and lobsters in their livewells. Maintaining my credibility as the best mini season DJ in south Florida, I cracked a Miller, tossed one to my best friend, cranked up “Fishing in the Dark” and counted my lucky stars for having Florida on my driver’s license. I loved knowing that for the next two days, half of south Florida would have heavy eyelids by noon, and the lucky ones would have lobster on their dinner plates. I was happy with an invite for next season and memories from one of my all time favorite summer nights.

Going into its 4th Annual fishing tournament, Adriana Somberg, the founder of Anglers For The Cure Research and Awareness of Prostate Cancer knew she had to make this year count in more ways than just an awesome captains’ meeting and fishing tournament. Anglers For The Cure is unlike any fishing tournament…not because of the prizes or the awesome venue. But because the tournament provides a service that most men would not think of taking the time to do, or perhaps do not have the insurance or the financial means to have a $300 blood test done. Anglers For The Cure and One Lab provided every man that was willing, a Complete Male Panel Blood test. A test that not only covers the PSA Screening but so much more. Last year, 57 had their FREE PSA Screenings done and two men’s lives were saved. This year 77 men took advantage of this incredible donation to their health and hopefully all will be well. Anglers For The Cure wants to be the messenger and what the men do with this message is up to them. This year’s tournament attracted 92 boats compared to 65 last year. Over 350 guests attended the Captains Meeting at the beautiful venue, Rybovich Superyacht Marina. With the generous donations of over 115 sponsors and the hard work of all their wonderful volunteers, the tournament is close to reaching their goal of making $100,000 for 2018. There were plenty of KDW winners, Fishing Goddesses and Jr. Anglers that caught fish as big as 39.3 lbs. and the King of the Kings Tournament with a 40.8 lb. kingfish. The benefactors are the MEN first then Zero-End of Prostate Cancer, Prostate Cancer Foundation, Treasure Health Hospice and Trustbridge Hospice. Offshore fishing has been hit or miss this past month, hopefully September will bring much needed changes to the water conditions! Time is of the essence; when you’re planning a fishing trip this month; get out there as early as possible to catch the dawn bite! The surface water temps warm up quickly during the first hour of daybreak therefore it is important to have lines in the water before the fish swim to deeper water to escape the heat. Within the next few weeks the mullet run/fall bait migration will take place, which will be a fairly easy bait to cast net in the ICW. In the meantime, large numbers of small threadfins and pilchards can be found around the mouth of Boynton Beach and Palm Beach Inlet. Another exciting fish to target this month will be the wahoo! Last month, the full moon produced a good number of wahoo. The sharks have been terrible lately, eating all the fish you hook when bottom fishing or drifting. Targeting wahoo on the troll is a nice change of pace and you cover a lot of ground. The impending September full moon will give you another opportunity to catch one if you haven’t already. If you like to high speed troll, I would recommend using Ballyhood lures such as the Banshee Cowbell or Wahoo Express Lures. When the conditions are favorable, and wahoo are thick, they will attack any lure you are pulling past them. Wahoo fishing gives you an incredible adrenaline rush, especially when you feel the head shakes while reeling in the fish and hand lining them through the transom door. For the anglers that prefer reef/wreck fishing, this month should also produce a good bottom bite. I would suggest using a ‘sinking line’ which means a 15ft, 60 to 80lb leader on a swivel, and a heavy sinker to hold the bottom. The hook you use depends on the type of bait you prefer to fish the bottom with. When fishing on one of these structures, you will catch big amberjack, assorted snapper including nice sized mutton snapper along with a few grouper or even a wahoo. Inshore fishing should be on FIRE with the mullet run right around the corner! You can use mullet to fish for snook, tarpon, jacks and trout. Small finger mullets are also perfect for snook, which were being caught and released throughout the day around the inlets in August as the spawning season came to an end. Good luck anglers! Wraps it Up! On August 9th and 11th, the 24th Annual Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing Tournament was held. The weather was nearly perfect and lots of fish were brought to the dock. After several years, the Captains’ meeting was back at the Delray Beach Elks Lodge on Thursday the 9th to great approval. We look forward to holding the meeting there for many years into the future. The weigh-in was at Veterans Park, now that the seawall has been repaired. Everyone agreed it was great to be there so that Mark was back in the Park. At the 2 day event, many raffle prizes and fishing goodies were won, most donated by our fantastic supporters and sponsors. A few of the items included a bike from Richwagen’s Bike & Sport, a high-grade set of binoculars from Delray Camera, a set of custom painted Adirondack chairs from local artist Tina Black, sunglasses from Eyes on Linton, and many other great gifts. A complete list of the prizes and sponsors can be found on our website (www.mgmft.net ) and our Facebook page. The tournament was started by Mark Gerretson as the Delray Beach Jaycees Fishing Tournament to raise money for the Delray Beach Kids and Cops program, among other worthy causes. Mark ran the tournament for 11 years before he passed in 2005. At that time, his friends and family made a promise to keep the tournament going, and to continue to raise money for a variety of charities that support the Delray Beach Community. The committee works throughout the year to plan the tournament, identify worthy causes, and disburse the money to those in need. Over the years the tournament has raised over $150,000 for local charities and provided help and hope to many children and families during tough times. The committee members are: Gary (Falcon) Musial, (Chairman), Patricia Gerretson, (Marks mom), Tim Knapp, Jen Buce, Paul Shersty, Deena Chapman, Chris Reich, Jim Gerretson, and Brittany Gerretson Roberts.

Hello Anglers, This month, I have gone to the Bahamas and went bass fishing in local canals and lakes with my friend Jake, who I met while in the Bahamas. We went to the Bahamas with a group of Jupiter boat owners, where we planned on fishing and snorkeling. Crossing to the Bahamas was not the best, but luckily, we had a 38 Jupiter. It still was a longer ride than normal, but when we arrived it was worth the ride. Right away, we headed to the restaurant at Old Bahama Bay for conch salad. Then I met Jake, who also came over in a Jupiter, and he invited me to play football and snorkel. We had a lot of fun and went snorkeling at the beach and went paddle boarding. We saw a nice size yellowtail and ruby snapper hiding in a shallow, hollowed out brain coral. We wanted to go out fishing, but it was too rough unfortunately. The next day we snorkeled multiple times, including Sandy Cay island where stingrays came right up to your feet. We did many more things in the Bahamas, and before we knew it, our time was up, and we had to head home. On our way home, we spotted some birds and 5lb bass stopped at a weed patch. We caught a small caught here in dolphin, which was enough for 2 dinners. Wellington Fl. Jake and I got together a couple days later and went out to his neighborhood to fish. I caught my best bass there on live bait. It was about 5 pounds. I had a lot of fun with my new friend, bass fishing and in the Bahamas.

Summer time drift fishing off Boynton Beach has produced some nice king mackerel, tunas and of course those bonitos! Pictured is some of the catch on a morning trip aboard the Living on Island Time drift boat. These anglers were happy to catch tuna up to 25lbs. They were targeting kings and caught a few then a school of bonitos started hitting. After catching and releasing quite a few bonitos, the Captain was just about ready to make a move when to everyone’s surprise, they started landing some nice black-fin tunas! Bonitos do give the angler a fun tough fight and are a great fish for beginners to catch, but we only keep a few to make strip baits for trolling. They are not good to consume. Our house rods are rigged with 50lb. test line; same for the leader with either a double trailer 5/0 - J - hook rig when the fish are finicky or switch to a triple trailer rig if we are missing the bites. We use the most common slip weight of 1 ounce. If the current is strong, then a 1-½ ounce. If the current is slower adjust your weight to ¾ or even a ½ ounce. For bait we use dead Spanish sardines, or some anglers prefer to use a smaller ballyhoo. You may also dress up your rig with a bucktail teaser, like a pink or yellow with or without mylar for enhancement. I prefer to use the mylar as it picks up the sunlight and makes it flash. FISHINGFORECASTS SOUTH COUNTY INSHORE & FRESHWATER By Capt. Patrick Smith

September is here and that puts us in the final stretch of the summer heat and is usually the start of the best time of the year. Hopefully lots of great things will happen. By the end of the month the mullet run should be getting started and snook, tarpon, jacks and sharks will all be in a frenzy on local beaches and in the intracoastal blasting the first waves of mullet. A live mullet or chunk fished under the school should get a bite. Around the bridges, docks and seawalls, the big snook that spent the summer in the inlets should move back to their normal spots and will be getting in the routine of blasting anything that looks like a mullet. My go to would be a Zara Spook running down a wall.

On the freshwater side of things, the water is still hot, and the result is a slow daytime bite on the Osbourne chain. My advice for the largemouths would be to focus on structure and shady ambush sites. Fish early and late and work the edges with a frog or fluke. There has been a decent clown knifefish bite with a few anglers reporting double digits of fish on a half-day trip. Good luck and tight lines

A few casts later and another nice trout on a topwater was on. I would say it was 3.5 to 4 lbs. max, but nice none the less.

Now for the maybe the best fish of the trip! We went to another shallow flat closer to Matanzas Inlet that is known for flounder and some redfish. Capt. Jim rigged me up with a Berkley Gulp Shad (I’m not sponsored by these lures FYI) and I began working the lure slow. He said the hit feels like an oyster bump, so set the hook when in doubt. He was poling up the flat and we saw numerous redfish push off in front of us. I was sure I was going to hook a

Yet another phenomenal year for The Sailfish Marina Big Dog Fat Cat KDW Shootout! The team under the leadership of Tournament Director Bill Wummer exceeded last year’s tournament with 243 boats in the hunt. This tournament continues to grow, getting bigger and better every year. The overall winner, Offshore Warrior was one of the first to the scales when they opened, not taking any chances on letting any of the girth of the monster 57 lb. kingfish fade. Bandit fishing team took 1st place aggregate and as well 1st place junior angler with Charlie DeBay. The team is Capt. Ron Mitchell and mates Chip DeBay, Taylor DeFusco, Matt Hart, Justin Mcteer. The charities that benefited from the tournament taking home over $20,000 dollars were A Second Chance Pet Adoption and The Marine Industry Education Foundation. Which Paddleboard is for me? by Chris Anders Contributing Writer Most people that buy from me are first time buyers and start the conversation with, “I’m a beginner and I don’t want to spend much money.” My response is, “you’re only a beginner for a short period of time and that if you buy the right paddle board the first time, you will spend less money in the long run.” What I mean by that is that standing up and balancing is easy along with just basic paddling. You can watch a few videos on YouTube and learn how to paddle like the pros. Danny Ching has a very easy to understand video on paddle stroke & technique. So, let’s move onto the board. First, anyone thinking of buying a soft top, just stop reading this article, we are no longer friends. Moving on, things that you need to think about when choosing a board. Start with how much do you weigh in consideration to the rider weight limit for the board. If you weigh 180 lbs. and you get a board with a max of 190 lbs., I will tell you that it is not going to be good ride for you unless you plan on using it for surf sup. Make sure you are buying a board that can handle what you plan on putting on the board, such as a cooler, kid(s) or a dog. Also, not only consider your weight but how much does the board weigh? If you are a small person and trying to lift a 35 lb. board on to the top of an SUV, you might have an issue and damage your board while trying to transport it. Lighter is better and you may consider carbon fiber boards for decreasing the weight but they do cost more. Longer is better… for speed. You will cover more distance per paddle stroke as opposed to a shorter board. You do have to consider storage for your board and if you are limited on space you might need a shorter board. Planing vs Displacement Boards or just get a hybrid: Planing boards are the most common boards you see on the water. They

Planing boards are easy to ride but are slower because there is more drag on the board compared to a displacement board. Displacement boards are narrow and fast. Water moves around the board creating less drag. Displacement boards are usually lighter, longer, narrower and faster than planing boards. Hybrids are the best of both worlds. They combine the displacement of a race board and the stability of a planing board. We call these boards “Touring” boards because you can put a lot of gear on the board and still travel at a faster speed than a planing board. These boards typically have tie-downs on the front, rear and mid-section of the board, and yes, tie-downs are important on recreational boards. September has arrived, and the mullet run is about to begin; summer has come and gone. The mullet run this month offers spectacular fishing along beaches and inside the ICW. Snook, tarpon, trout, jacks and many other predator fish ambush the mullet schools. Bait schools shower along the surface as snook and tarpon breach the surface gulping baits in the process. Top water plugs offer exciting action for anglers. Predator fish strike with a vengeance becoming airborne as they explode on the plug aggressively. Snook can be targeted in the inlets, beaches, grass flats and along seawalls and docks. Top water plugs like Heddon Super Spooks or Spook Jr are an excellent choice for surface strikes. DOA C.A.L. 4 inch jerk baits and DOA bait busters entice snook to strike near surface and sub surface. The mullet schools are great areas to locate snook, typically morning and evenings are the best times to fish. Night fishing is another option for snook fanatics. Bridges Tim with nice snook and docks provide caught on DOA C.A.L. plenty of action; 4” jerk bait. channel edges also produce plenty of drag screaming action as well. The snook may gather in pods at times, many of the bigger female snook are on the

outside of these pods. The size of the snook ranges from 5 to 25 pounds. Fly fishing anglers can entice snook with popper flies. Snook breach the surface exploding on popper flies. The sea walls, docks and channel edges are all areas where bait gather, drawing snook to these areas to feed. Many of the tarpon are schooled together and can be seen rolling on the surface. The size of the tarpon ranges from 10 to 80 pounds. The best bait to use for tarpon is live mullet or pin fish. The key to tarpon is stay in front of them and stay quiet and present bait in a natural presentation. Sea trout, big jacks, Goliath grouper, black drum, and many others all offer rod bending action. Find structure or potholes along grass flats, locate bait schools in the area and you will find the fish. The trout and drum hang on drop offs willing to inhale baits on the bottom. The jacks like fast moving top water Heddon Spooks on the surface. For those anglers who want steady action, nothing beats a live mullet. Just cast one out along drop offs or structure and hold on tight. Nothing like seeing a predator fish explode on a live bait. It puts a smile on everyone’s face. Welcome to the Coastal Angler Magazine fishing forecast for September. Expect great dolphin fishing this month and calm seas. Most of the dolphin will be caught offshore, but you will see a few on the edge after a good wind. When looking offshore keep your eye out for floating debris. That will be a fish FAD full of bait and pelagics lurking under. We at Reelintensefishing. com will not stop at a spot unless it has small bait under the debris or weeds. Dolphin fish will not be far from a good food source. Most dollies will be in the 12 lb. range but there will be some monsters out there too. Good luck! Swordfishing will be on fire this month and the calm seas will make for a great trip. The weather plays a big part when heading 20 miles out. Start early and get back before the afternoon storms. Safety should be first on the list. We have been doing great on a bonita strip with a black skirt. Don’t be afraid to move around. Tight lines! INSHORE: Fishing early or late in the day is going to be your best option this time of year. The flats and inlets are holding large amounts of glass minnows. Using lures to imitate these baits will be your best bet. Fishing the inlets, docks and bridges will continue to be a great option. Try using a DOA Terror Eyz or jerk bait bounced near the bottom around the inlet. Fishing the bridges at night with a mullet imitation will work great as well. One of my favorite bridges is the Lake Worth Bridge right next to Snook Islands. They have a nice kayak launch on the north side to make access to the bridge quick and easy. Fish the shadow line that is being put off by the lights on the bridge for a successful night.

OFFSHORE: September has always been a great month for wahoo in the kayak. Concentrate on live baiting large goggle eyes deeper in the water column. The best time of the month will be a few days before and after the full moon. Kingfish will be in decent numbers with 10-15 pound fish the norm. Sailfish will be in the mix as well. Smaller goggle eyes and blue runners on a flat line will work to lure them in. Finally blackfin and skipjack Captain Weston Russell tuna will come through in small schools. Lake Worth Lagoon Fishing Challenge of 2018 Awards Us All!

Palm Beach County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) concluded its 3rd Annual FREE Lake Worth Lagoon Fishing Challenge by presenting over $2,000 worth of prizes for competitive top anglers and other anglers that reported any catches during the 6-week Challenge. The Awards Event was held at the distinguished West Palm Beach Fishing Club on July 25, 2018. The LWL Fishing Challenge is a great opportunity to showcase fisheries data such as, species diversity, quantity of catches, number and size of sportfish throughout the 20-mile stretch of Lake Worth Lagoon. The close of the 6-week Challenge each year is always a highlight for ERM scientists to analyze and present the reported data that emphasizes the real value of logging catches. 2018 numbers at a glance include: 117 registered anglers, 57 different species, 1,086 approved entries, and 115 sportfish. The most gratifying for ERM and the Challenge sponsors is meeting the anglers and sharing the experiences of fishing and exploring the lagoon. Anglers can see why submitting information such as location, fish species, size, date stamp and a picture in the free iAngler app – make the Challenge such a success each year! The catch information helps determine the significance of Lake Worth Lagoon restoration projects like Snook Islands, Grassy Flats, Bryant Park and South Cove providing fisheries habitat in the Lagoon. Eric Anderson, a Senior Environmental Analyst with ERM, says that “We hear the stories of snook, tarpon, red drum and other sportfish being seen and caught around our restoration projects in Lake Worth Lagoon, but no photos or data to confirm the reports.” This is why the LWL Fishing Challenge and all its participating “citizen scientists” make this Challenge such a success, both recreationally and scientifically! The 2018 Challenge reeled in other sponsors and that means more prizes! Kids Fishing Day Introduces Youth to Our Waters

For the past three decades the West Palm Beach Fishing Club’s charitable affiliate, the Palm Beach County Fishing Foundation (PBCFF), has been introducing area youth to fishing through its unique educational program, Kid’s Fishing Day. The PBCFF’s 31st annual program ran July 17th, 18th & 19th out of Lake Park Harbor Marina, with over 300 kids participating this year and over 13,000 since its inception. Kid’s Fishing Day targets children throughout Palm Beach County who don’t normally have the opportunity or means to experience saltwater fishing aboard a big boat. More importantly, this program exposes these kids to the Lake Worth Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean, opening their eyes to one of the reasons that makes our area so special. It’s hard to understand the importance of this unique marine environment without experiencing it. Kid’s Fishing Day continues to broaden children’s horizons by allowing them to enjoy a day on the water. Many of the kids had never been on a boat before; some were lucky enough to catch their first fish. Not only do participants walk away with fishing know-how and a new rod & reel combo, they hopefully also leave more invested in our saltwater resources. The WPBFC and PBCFF would like to thank the title sponsor, The Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, and the Town of Lake Park and the many businesses and individuals who sponsor this heartwarming program. ON THE RANGE by Chuck Papp Contributing Writer So it begins, the best time of the year is upon us. That for some of us is hunting season. It seems like it has been years since the end of the last season, but, it’s only been months. If you are a hunter you understand the time frame I referenced. Now it’s just not about getting out there and trying to harvest the game. It’s much more than that. It’s about just being out in the woods: the That time of the year cooler weather, the campfires, friends and family, in the woods. and just getting away from the stress of everyday life, if it’s only for a few days. The season also brings resources wildlife need to flourish in the way of financial support from hunters. Hunting brings revenue from license fees, equipment, local businesses as far as money spent for lodging, food, transportation and many others. The hunting industry is a billion dollar a year plus industry that state game officials and wildlife need to survive. Without us it all would have been gone decades ago. Whether you hunt local, a few hours away from home or even in another state the hunter is a resource wildlife needs for its existence. Bow hunters, gun hunters, big game or small game hunters all belong to the same brotherhood. Yes, like many things we do, there are some that give us a bad name at times, but in general many of us play by the rules and laws of the state in which we hunt and do it ethically. If you’ve never tried it and are interested check with your local game and fish department. They will be able to get you started in the right direction plus there are numerous social media sites to investigate. If hunting is not your thing there is always fishing, hiking, camping, target shooting and other activities to enjoy the outdoors. So get out there, you have no idea what you are missing.

JUNO BEACHPIER by Tom Longo, Loggerhead Marine Contributing Writer September will be a fun month to fish at the Juno Beach Pier. In September, the fall mullet run is likely to arrive, fingers crossed. With the mullet come the bluefish (use diamond jigs or spoons for them), sharks, plenty of jacks and snook (Snook season opens September 1st but you must have a snook permit to harvest). Anglers can also look forward to the king mackerel run – just be sure to use live Spanish mackerel or blues as bait. Also on the horizon are tarpon, sand perch and lady fish. Of course, Spanish mackerel and pompano may also show toward the end of the month, and – if the northeast winds are fair – some mutton snapper. Loggerhead Marinelife Center offers its year-round Private Fishing Lessons for adults and kids (ages 8 and up.) One-hour lessons are offered daily; scheduled based on availability. here is this plaguing desire to stay out late into the night, drifting over deep, dark seas on the hunt for creatures rarely seen. It’s an addiction. The need drives us to go out over three times a week, beyond Florida waters, into federal waters, to photograph elusive creatures and fish. It’s this desire… this addiction, that drives us blackwater drift divers to the western edge of the Gulfstream several nights a week. It keeps us out of our comfy beds and in our dive gear until midnight during the workweek. These creatures, some no larger than a grain of rice, are so elusive that some have never before been seen. Some have never before been caught on camera. Others are in a morphological life stage that has never before been observed. All are what intrigue us. We find crus-

taceans like shrimp, crabs and even lobster in their larval forms. We spot fish in their larval forms that look absolutely nothing like their adult counterparts. These are not your typical, everyday sightings of wildlife on the south Florida reefs. But these are also not your typical day, or even night dives. This is more open, over deeper, darker waters. We jump into water more than 600 feet deep, after sunset, more than 4 miles from the Palm Beach shoreline. Even though you can still see the glow of lights of downtown West Palm Beach, it is faint. Even though we only dive down to 45 feet or less, we are still adrift over 600 foot depths in the dark, waiting for our subjects to rise to the surface from the depths. So what exactly is the draw? Why the addiction? Why the constant need to continue diving in the dark, over depths in which humans cannot go without the help of submersible vehicles? The answer is to see the incredible! We see underwater creatures that are so bizarre and so beautiful it literally takes your breath away and gets your blood pumping. We get the opportunity to observe creatures that others do not get to see. These are fish that even biologists studying that species have never before seen, and we can now provide them with photos! ach June my family and I take a break from our Venice, Fla. charter operation and head to the Florida Keys to do some fun-fishing. This year we fished from Tavernier and caught mahi, tuna and a big beautiful sailfish. We hosted some special guests on the boat this year. It was a family chosen by the Catch-A-Dream Foundation (catchadream. org). Gavin, who is 11, his little sister, mother and father came to fish with us for three days, accompanied by a Catch-A-Dream volunteer host named Adam. Catch-A-Dream Foundation provides children with life-threatening illnesses the opportunity to go on a hunting or fishing adventure of a lifetime with all expenses paid. Everyone had high hopes of Gavin catching his first mahi. As we cut through Tavernier Creek, I could see several thunder-

storms building offshore. We would have limited time to catch some fish and get back safely. I saw an opening in the sky and headed that way. We ran about 12 miles, and I started seeing bird action and three huge patches of weeds. My wife, Trisha, steered the boat as I put out the spread of lures and fresh ballyhoo. We immediately hooked a 12-pound bull mahi, and in short order Gavin had accomplished the first goal of the trip. But the day was not over. Things were getting ready to get very exciting. As we reeled in a small fish on our second pass, it started to rain. Out of nowhere Gavin yelled, “Look at the that BIG fish in the water!” It was a huge bull mahi, maybe 60 pounds. I grabbed a spinning rod and tossed a bait to it, but it just swam off. After seeing that fish, we had to try another pass. As I was letting it out a ballyhoo line, it came tight. The head of a big mahi pushed water toward the bait. Five seconds later, we had a huge fish on! Gavin grabbed the rod, and after a few jumps we had the cow mahi boat-side. I gaffed the fish, but it flew off and into the water. Everyone aboard went dead silent. Then my wife said, “Tom, it’s going to be OK,” before praying, “Oh please God let this fish come back to us.” It did! Gavin battled the jumping fish back to the boat. This time I got it over the rail. It measured 65 inches long. I have never seen anyone catch a cow mahi that long. There is not a doubt in my mind that God was in control and gave Gavin the strength to catch this fish of a lifetime! It was an experience of a lifetime for all of us. Gavin is a wonderful child, full of life despite his illness. Catch-A-Dream Foundation is an amazing organization that provides these deserving kids and their families a trip of a lifetime. Capt. n an early afternoon in mid-June, my wife and I had dropped our son at swim lessons in Jensen Beach when I realized how close we were to the causeway. Of course, I made her stop so I could fish. Conditions were perfect. In the middle of an outgoing tide, the water was a little milky and churned up. A small school of glass minnows showered the surface, and pelicans dove on finger mullet schooling through the span of the bridge. Prior to leaving the house, I had just tied up a 1-ounce white-and-blue flair hawk jig and was really anticipating putting it to use. If you’ve ever caught a snook on a flair hawk, you know the feeling when they thump the jig. That happened on my third cast, and as I set the hook the fish did not hesitate to run straight under the catwalk with about 20 yards of line. About to lose her on a piling, I cupped the spool hard and managed to turn her head. I got a few cranks on her and began a battle like I’ve never experienced. The pure power is absolutely amazing. After what seemed an eternity, I brought the fish to the top. I handed the rod to my wife so I could hop the railing to balance on a piling cap no wider than 8 inches. Careful not to fall in or injure the fish, I brought it over the railing for a few photos before release. It was the fish of a lifetime.

f you want to be a successful bass angler, you have to learn to fish a jig. I don’t know anybody, anywhere, who’s a successful bass angler, who doesn’t know how to fish a jig well. It is so versatile, and it catches quality fish. Personally, I love a good jig bite, so it’s also one of the most fun ways to fish. There’s not another lure on the market that has been tweaked and built to fish different types of cover and structure like a jig, and that’s part of its appeal. Jigs come in so many different shapes and sizes that the possibilities are endless. Changing out the jig’s trailer can make all the difference in the world, too. If you are just starting to get serious about jig fishing, an “Arkie”-style jig would be best to learn with. A 3/8- to ½-ounce size, really the first kind of bass jig head that ever came out, is where to begin. I use it for flipping, as it works well around wood, rock, gravel, ledges, and you can even swim it. You basically fish it like a soft plastic worm. Cast it out and let it go all the to the bottom on a slack line. Pull it off the bottom a few inches and then crawl it along. Most of the time when you’re casting or flipping, you’re imitating a crawfish, so think about a one of those walking around on the bottom. He’s not going to be jumping around a lot. If something chases him, he might scurry along quickly, but they usually move fairly slowly. Fishing a jig does take the right gear. I fish 20-lb. Vicious fluorocarbon with an improved clinch knot, a good high-speed reel and an NEPS 90HF rod from MHX. It is a 7’6” heavy-action rod with a fast tip. That rod is absolutely perfect for jig fishing. You can make accurate presentations with this fast-action tip, and the heavy power gives you the backbone to pull fish out of

the cover. There are tons of jigs with this style. The best ones always have a good Mustad hook. Keep the colors simple; green pumpkin and orange in clear water and black and blue in dirty water. Jigs are weedless and made to be fished in heavy cover. Give them a try, and you’ll soon see why everyone who bass fishes likes a jig.

ike most southern ports, Charleston, S.C. offers plenty of inshore angling opportunities. You’ll find redfish in the bays, seatrout in the channels, plus flounder, cobia and spadefish on local wrecks. “Those are all fun,” said Darcy Hill (#fishcharleston), but if you want to hook something with a real sense of Southern hospitality, the inshore sheepshead fishery is tough to beat. From Isle of Palms to Folly Island, and right on up into the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers surrounding the city, you’ll find these battle-ready fish hugging structure.” An abundance of sheepshead doesn’t mean they’re pushovers. Quite the contrary, Hill pointed out, “Sheepshead can be challenging to catch. You have to poke into all the nooks and crannies amongst structure points, and keep moving until you get on them.” For bank fishermen, Hill recommended public access points like the Folly beach, Isle of Palms or Mount Pleasant piers. Boaters should tie-up to pilings, docks or other structure (where legal) and fish each piece thoroughly. Sometimes, she said, moving your bait just 5 or 6 inches to one side or the other makes a ton of difference. “We generally use fiddler crabs or oysters for bait,” explained the 32-year old Folly Island resident. Bury the hook in your offering and hide the point. To get the bite started, chum with crushed oysters or barnacles. Fiddlers work best from May through February while oysters rule in cooler months. Get your line tight to structure, then lift it up slightly and drop it down slowly. Most bites come on the drop. The end of the ebb and start of the flood usually see the best scores.” Setting up for sheepshead, Hill uses a Carolina-rig with a size 1 Owner Mosquito hook, a ¾-ounce egg sinker and a 1-foot length of 30-pound test mono leader. She’ll team this with a fast-tip rod and KaskKing 3,000 series Kodiak spinning reel filled with 40-pound test KastKing Super Power or KastPro braided line. “I like the abrasion resistance of these lines,” she noted, “and that Kodiak reel just gets the job done. Last week it out-muscled a 15-pound spadefish.” Keep in mind, Hill added, that sheepshead can be light biters, so watch for line twitches in addition to feeling for strikes. Set the hook hard because these fish have a big set of teeth and tough lips. Pull straight up, not to the side. Keep your rod high and walk the fish away from the nastiest tangles as you reel up. Charleston’s inshore sheepshead average 3 pounds but can push into double-digits. Two years ago, Hill took fellow KastKing pro staffer Christin Kruger on her first sheepshead foray. “She caught a 10-pounder!” laughed Hill. Now she’s a sheepshead fan for life.” October is prime time for Charleston’s sheepshead. Frank Bellizio, Bob Sherley and Chet Jasak had the trip of a lifetime with sweet sailfish and mighty marlin releases. Once they got home we received this: “I returned last week from my trip to Nosara,” wrote Frank Bellizio, of Tampa, Fla. “It was great to finally get to go fish with your team in Costa Rica. Francisco wanted to, he could have ended our day earlier, but he hung in and we got the sailfish late in the day. Capt. William had to work the Wanderer over and over to keep the marlin in position so Bob and I could get it landed. These men and their crew (Johnny and Elias) are much more than just employees, they have heart, and you are blessed to have them on your staff.” Kathleen Clarke of Ottawa, Ontario came to us as a novice angler, but after her trip on the Discoverer she is a full-fledged big-time bluewater angler. “Just wanted to let you know that we had an incredibly amazing time on our fishing trip,” Kathleen wrote in an email. “I don’t think that it could have been any better. Capt. Carlos and Mate Kevin were stellar. I would highly recommend that crew to anyone. “Kevin kept the boat very clean and tidy and made sure we all had everything we needed. Lunch was excellent, also, as was the fruit. We caught a mix of mahi-mahi and sailfish, also saw porpoises and turtles.” Most recently we received this one: “Just wanted to say an enthusiastic thank you for the incredible trip we had thanks to your team,” wrote Jeff Broom, of Jacksonville, Fla. “In three days we got three marlin, two blues and a massive black, three sailfish, a huge dorado, and a good deal more tuna and mahi. “Thanks to Capt. Alex and his hard working deckhand Wilson, I was able to cross marlin off my bucket list of fish to catch. It was definitely a dream for me, and I know I speak for all the guys in our group that it was definitely the fishing trip of a lifetime! “You could tell how passionate Alex was about fishing. His favorite thing to say after we brought in a catch was, ‘Let’s get another one!’”

hen the Spanish conquistadors came to Ecuador, they were in search of gold. The Incas found most of their gold in the headwaters of the Amazon. I recently found gold in the Ecuadorian Amazon… golden dorado. I’ve spent 25 years on the rivers of Ecuador leading kayak and fishing trips. Three years ago, I decided to find golden dorado. Most dorado fishing occurs in Bolivia or northern Argentina. It just didn’t make sense to me that Ecuador, with such similar topography didn’t also have golden dorado. As a fly fishing guide, one of the most fun and sometimes challenging aspects of the job is finding new fishing opportunities. It isn’t unusual for my friend and co-guide, Bob Gernandt, and I to float some stretch of river we’ve never seen to develop a new fishing destination. Doing this in another country can be a bit more complicated, especially when you are heading into one of the biggest jungles in the world. Having a lodge in the cloud forest of the Amazon has allowed me to tap into local knowledge. It also helps to have a partner in-country who knows the lay of the land and can speak the language. Last February, my partner Angel and I spent a month tracking down dorado leads. Angel visited one community after another with photos of golden dorados. The first breakthrough was learning that indigenous communities call the fish by its Ketchua name, Gualo. That led us to a handful of possible rivers to check. We were dependent on local river transportation. The indigenous communities have used dugout canoes for centuries to transport people and goods in the roadless jungle. These canoes are 12-meter-long boats carved out of a tree trunk. We were able to check out three different sections of rivers using these narrow and incredibly tippy canoes. The advantage is these boats can negotiate whitewater while being pushed upstream by a 40-horse outboard. They are almost impossible to stand in, so they are not the best platform to cast an 8-weight fly rod from. We eventually transported a raft and fishing frame upstream in order to float a section of river. It didn’t take long to catch several Ecuadorian golden dorado as well as another species of fish call sabalo. Sabalo fry are the favorite food for dorado, so they are likely found together. If the sabalo survive the dorado, they grow into great sport fish. Their shape is similar to a largemouth bass, but they are much more aggressive and hard fighting. The golden dorado prefer rapids and fast water at the washout of rapids, while sabalo like smooth fast water between rapids. It presents an ideal situation for fishing because there’s no down time! Once you catch a golden dorado, you are hooked for life. These are some of the hardest hitting, hardest fighting, highest jumping fish in the world. I can’t wait to hook into more gold. ick Ratliff, 21, of Elizabethtown, Ky., a senior at Campbellsville University, will be fishing the big show when the Bassmaster Classic launches on the Tennessee River at Knoxville in March. He’s also riding around in a fully rigged Toyota Tundra that’s pulling a Nitro Z20 bass boat, and he’s holding a check for $7,500 for tournament entry fees. It’s all thanks to some last-minute heroics that helped him win the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket. Ratliff fought down to the final minutes of the third day in an oh-soclose bracket against a scrappy West Virginia University junior, Nolan Minor of Charlottesville, Va. The anglers wrapped up the day with the two biggest bags of the tournament; Ratliff with 13 pounds, 8 ounces and Minor with 13-4. Ratliff, who is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in marketing, plugged along consistently, throwing a weightless wackyrigged stickworm and keeping his faith. “I had the feeling I was behind,” he said. “I kept my head down, and I knew if the Lord meant it to be, then it would be.” With just 30 minutes left in fishing time, Ratliff picked up three more fish that allowed him to cull up to his winning 13-8. Ratliff was emotional and stunned as family and friends hugged and congratulated him. “It hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said of the win and the Classic berth. “It was so close. I thought I’d lost.
