Outdoor Apparel FISH HIPPIE FLATWATER COLLECTION SHUCKERHUT PLAID Those who live an outdoor life should be able to represent it in their casual lives as well as “out there.” That’s the idea behind Fish Hippie, which was created by anglers who favor good times with friends, time on the water and “drifting off course” as often as life allows. New for spring 2018 from the Fish Hippie Flatwater Collection, the Shuckerhut Plaid blends on-the-water comfort with casual style of the highest quality. Designed with comfort and versatility in mind, the Shuckerhut delivers a silky-smooth touch with an apt range of movement and flexibility. Hidden-button collars prevent dreaded “collar flare,” while double chest pockets and two back shoulder pleats converge for an elevated level of functional, yet casual, style. The specially created four-way stretch fabric is 30+ upf, wrinkle and stain resistant and is easily worn fishing, as well as to the office or a night on the town. The Flatwater Collection is the latest offering from Fish Hippie for those more at home on the road less traveled. L.L.BEAN ULTIMATE FISHING SHIRT L.L.Bean recently introduced its new Ultimate Fishing Shirt, and it’s exactly what you need for a long day on the flats or a wade trip up your favorite stream. The Ultimate Fishing Shirt is a technical fishing shirt, thoughtfully designed with a combination of fabrics for ease of movement, comfort and durability. It looks good and keeps you dry with moisturewicking fabrics, but what makes it the Ultimate Fishing Shirt is its ability to provide protection from both biting insects and the sun’s harmful rays. With UPF 50+ sun protection and No Fly Zone technology to repel insects, this shirt eliminates two of the most prominent factors that lead to discomfort on the water. It features four chest pockets to hold essential gear, it can be worn tucked or untucked, the sleeves can be rolled up and secured, and an extended collar unrolls from hidden snaps to provide added protection from the sun. The slightly fitted design offers a relaxed fit through the chest and sleeve, with a slightly slimmer waist to both look good and provide for unhindered movement. The Ultimate Fishing Shirt is available in Dusty Sage, Marine Blue and Graystone colors.

FISH & FISHING

Finding The Touch MARK SOSIN

T

oo many anglers blame what they consider the obvious when they are not catching fish. They reason that the fish aren’t hungry, they’re not fishing in the right spot, or the lure they have chosen is not producing the results they expected. Sometimes, it merely takes a subtle touch to turn frustration into success. Although my father fished around the bend many years ago, I still marvel at his skill working a yellow Upperman bucktail in the ¼- or 3/8-ounce size. To this day, I have never met an angler who could come close to matching his success with that single lure. He caught countless species on that bucktail, from striped bass, bluefish and weakfish, to redfish, trout, bonefish, permit and tarpon. Even when I stood next to him and tried to match his every move, I fell far short. What that taught me is that some simple thing in the retrieve (or lack of one) can make a major difference. Let me share a few examples with you. Two of us fishing side-by-side were casting MirrOlures. They were the same model and the same color. He would get strike after strike, while I could barely get a fish to hit my lure. No matter how closely I watched him, I couldn’t detect any difference in the area we fished and the speed of the retrieve. I had to threaten to physically harm him if he didn’t tell me what he was doing. The only difference was that he occasionally vibrated his wrist on the hand

holding the rod. That caused the lure to flash just like a baitfish, and a predator reacted to that instantly. In another example, my friend and I were both fishing a swimming plug with a lip. During the retrieve, it would dive down, but if you stopped reeling the lure would start to float back to the surface. Once again, my partner got strike after strike, and I could barely catch an occasional fish. All he was doing was swimming the plug for a short distance, pausing for an instant, and then continuing the retrieve. Every time he paused, the plug would start to rise in the water column and then dive again when he resumed reeling. The sudden dive made it appear the lure was trying to escape from a predator. That’s all it took. Here’s one more example. The successful angler would start with a rather slow retrieve and then speed it up about halfway back to the boat. If a fish happened to see the plug, the change in speed would make it appear as if the plug were trying to get away and that’s a trigger mechanism. Seasoned anglers who fish artificials and score frequently limit the number of lures they carry and develop a touch for each one that produces strikes. Basically, there is more than one way to fish any artificial. My suggestion is that you keep trying a variety of subtle approaches until you become the angler that others envy and try to copy.

FLY FISHING

Fly Reel Backing

L

osing a big saltwater gamefish after it is hooked and decides to head for the horizon is, in many instances, the result of filling your reel with backing that is either too short or too light. It can ruin an otherwise wonderful trip. Also, making wrong choice in backing can lose you not only your fish, but worse, it can cost you a very expensive fly line. Twenty-pound backing is a good choice for most inshore saltwater fly fishing situations, and 30-pound backing will more than fill the bill in getting you through a tussle with an uncooperative bluewater gamefish. The Old School Frame Of Mind: Dacron These days there are many choices when it comes to choosing backing for your fly reels. Some anglers prefer braided backing because of its small diameter. I prefer the tested and trued performance of standard hi-vis Dacron. Why? Because, It’s easier on the fingers while fighting big fish, and it does not have the tendency—as braid does—to dig into itself when reeled back onto the fly reel. How Much Do You Need? Your fly reel should house a minimum of 175 yards of 20-pound Dacron backing. Many inshore saltwater gamefish will make initial runs of from 75 to 100 yards before they turn and settle into a fighting mode. For bluewater fly fishing, 30-pound Dacron or gel spun is standard. A minimum of 300 yards should fill these reels. Big bluewater gamefish like the tuna and marlin will run off 200

yards of backing before you’ve had time to say, “Come back and fight like a man!” These fish can also dive to great depths, thus making essential an abundant supply of backing. One caveat to remember is “Don’t short-line your backing.” Best Color For Backing? The phrase “getting into your backing” always arouses excitement through a saltwater fly fisherman’s being each time he hears it. There is nothing more exciting than witnessing one hundred yards of water-shedding backing slicing through the water, pulled by a bonefish, tarpon, sailfish or marlin. It’s a common occurrence in saltwater fly fishing. When this happens, the color of your backing is essential in tracking the fish’s direction. Is it swimming at an angle or is it sounding. Make no mistake, eventually every saltwater fisherman experiences this. High-visibility backing will help determine how to fight the fish. For instance, when tarpon fishing it is important that you are able to turn a tarpon’s head during the tussle, a move aimed at keeping the tarpon off balance and assuring the fish is brought quickly to the boat. Also, the use of hivis backing allows the angler a better sight-line in tracking the fish’s direction so pressure may be applied in an opposite direction. The best colors? As I stated above, I prefer hi-vis backing in bright yellow or bright orange, both highly visible backing regardless of weather conditions or water coloration.

hen Yamaha introduced the 19-foot 190 FSH center console boat in 2016, the company tapped into a segment of boaters who want to fish more than runabout owners, but who also want to tow and entertain more than other center console owners. By all accounts, Yamaha’s “family sports hybrid” concept proved to be a success. Featuring an innovative, yet familiar, center console deck design, a performance sports boat hull, and the versatility unique to jet power, the 190 FSH is attracting more younger, first-time buyers than traditional center console brands, and is already the second best seller in the category. For 2018, Yamaha is expanding their FSH offering to include a 21-foot model that is better suited for rougher waters and delivers the added peace of mind that comes with dual engines. And because the motors and driveline are tucked in the hull underneath the captain’s leaning post, the boat provides an open 360-degree experience that fishermen love. The 210 FSH includes all the features that fishing enthusiasts require, along with family features that are perfect for an entire day out on the water to include water sports, swimming and lounging—all in the same boat, and at a competitive price starting under $40,000. The 210 FSH is available in three variations that include the base model 210 FSH, an upgraded 210 FSH Deluxe, and the flagship 210 FSH Sport that offers the features of the Deluxe with the addition of a custom T-top. All three models come with Yamaha’s award-winning TR-1 High Output marine engines. 210 FSH Walkthrough Starting at the bow, there is comfortable, padded seating with ample room for four adults. The padded cushions snap off, so they are easy to store or leave at home when you are heading out for a fishing trip. Under the starboard bow seat is an insulated fish locker, and there is a dedicated locker for a full-size Danforth anchor. There is more storage below the port bow seat, in the sole, and inside two large consoles. In front of the helm console is more seating, and the console lifts up to reveal a cavernous storage area that also serves as a changing room or a head compartment thanks to the curtain enclosure included on the Deluxe and Sport models. The 210 FSH is loaded with the angling features one would ex-

pect in a premium center console boat to include coaming pads, vertical and horizontal holders for 14 rods and a 26-gallon aerated live well. A cool feature you won’t find on other center console boats is Yamaha’s exclusive Jet Wash system that uses pressure from the jet pumps for easy cleanup of the cockpit, whether you land a big fish or the kids fill the boat full of sand. The Helm The helm is thoughtfully designed with a simple-to-remove windshield for low profile storage, a stainless-steel sports steering wheel, easy access to all boat control switches, a locking glove box and an open area to flush mount electronics such as a fishfinder, a GPS unit and other marine electronics. The 210 FSH comes equipped with Yamaha’s 4.3” Connext Touchscreen Display, which is NMEA compatible to send vital engine information to third-party electronics. Behind the helm is a padded leaning post with a backrest (on Deluxe and Sport). Under the leaning post is a dedicated space for a removable cooler. The Transom The transom area on the FSH Series is unlike any other center console boat on the market. Since the engines and drivetrain are in the hull, the entire back of the 201 FSH is open for unobstructed casting and watersports towing. The 210 FSH features Yamaha’s signature two-tier swim platform that sits low at the water’s edge. A retractable stern ladder makes reboarding after swimming a breeze. The transom also includes a tow eye for watersports. Like all Yamaha boats, the 210 FSH features Yamaha’s patented clean-out ports that allow for the removal of debris from the jet pump without having to get in the water or swim under the boat. Rounding out the FSH’s list of innovations is the addition of Yamaha’s Articulating Keel, the latest in Yamaha’s Advanced Responsive Handling features. The Articulating Keel is an extension of the boat’s keel that moves and tracks along with the jet pump nozzle to provide comfort, stability and straight-line tracking at all speeds. For buyers attracted to the iconic styling of a center console boat, but need more versatility to appease the family, look no further than the Yamaha 210 FSH.

ho doesn’t have a smile on their face when they’re spending time on the water? You can’t help yourself. Boating is getting away from it all. And getting away from it all is always more fun with friends. This is where the United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club comes in. Enjoying your time on the water with family and friends starts with being safe and responsible while having fun. That’s what makes America’s Boating Club different than most boating organizations. For over a hundred years, the organization’s focus has been on providing unsurpassed boating safety education. But the organization’s leadership and members are passionate about a membership that doesn’t end on Sunday and doesn’t care if the calendar says it’s winter. It’s about being together and building a community through a variety of events like parties, meetings and even just getting together for no reason at all. Driven by this passion, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club, the country’s largest nonprofit boating organization, just launched its new logo. This is the first of several planned updates in the organization’s new brand image and identity. Changes to the organization’s website, social media platforms and collateral are expected in the coming weeks. “We are United States Power Squadrons, but we are also America’s Boating Club,” said Louie Ojeda, chief commander, United States Power Squadrons. “This is not just a name change, it describes what we do. We go boating and have fun doing it. Over time, our squadrons have evolved to become social clubs as well as providers of high quality boating education – allowing members to enjoy the sport and camaraderie of boating and any number of activities that keep us together. Togetherness is what this lifestyle is all about. We joined the organization for the boating education, but we stayed for the friends.” Offering classes For Boaters, By Boaters in boat handling, navigation, boat maintenance, weather and related subjects, United States

Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club serves as a virtual “yacht club” with boating and social activities for all types of recreational boaters. With over 27,000 members organized into 356 squadrons across the country, America’s Boating Club is comprised of families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. Squadron members are vital to strengthening the communities

they live in and know it’s important to live their values by giving back through public service and volunteer opportunities. Members provide courtesy vessel safety checks, help the NOAA’s National Ocean Service keep nautical charts accurate and organize beach cleanups. “Our commitment is to continue learning, teaching, laughing and helping our fellow members enjoy boating,” continued Ojeda. “Whether you’re passionate about cruising, racing, making new friends, volunteering in your community or learning from experienced boaters, your local squadron has the resources you need to engage your passions and, perhaps, instill some new ones.” In February of 2017, the United States Power Squadrons announced its America’s Boating Club co-brand to its squadrons, following an almost yearlong re-naming exercise. eam Beach Marine Products is riding a high headed into the second leg of the Meat Mayhem Tournament series at Palm Beach March 8-10. Rod man Teddy Beach used one word to describe their $10,000 win at the January Key West Kingfish Mayhem: “Monumental.” In rough conditions, the team weighed in a 65.2-pound kingfish on day two to win the first event of the three-leg series. But things weren’t so rosy on day one. With a 6:30 a.m. Bimini start, the team headed west out of Key West Harbour Marina aboard their 39’ SeaHunter “Prowess” toward the Dry Tortugas. Passing Marquesas Key, there were 8- to 10-foot swells. Beach said they were glad to have their Seakeeper stabilizer when it came time to set out the spread. “When we got to the fort, in 120 feet of water, the waves were stacking up past 10 feet,” he said. “Fishing conditions were tough. Water clarity was junk; it was just milky.” Team Beach Marine fought all day to find clean water. They lost four fish on the first day of the tournament and did not land a single king mackerel. The team, captained by Billy Delph, decided to make a move on day two. They left the docks that morning in 35 mph winds with 10- to 12-

foot seas. They headed west where they had located a temperature break in 95 feet of water. “We knew the area we were targeting,” Beach said. “And we knew it would pay off when the water clarity was good and the temperature was right at 78 degrees.” Several days prior, they began catching blue runners and penned them in two 300-gallon Beach Marine Pro Pens with false bottoms. So, they were fishing good, fresh and healthy bait as they slow trolled the break. The results were impressive. Along with two sailfish, they caught 15 kingfish. The smallest weighed 28 pounds, and they had four heavier than 40 pounds. Their back-up fish weighed well over 50 pounds, but the largest of the day was a 65.2-pound king mackerel. “When Daniel Delph stuck that fish, the mood on the boat was monumental,” said Beach. “We called it a day. We were sitting at the dock at 1:45 waiting for weigh-in.” Watching the weights after the 4:30 p.m. check-in, Beach Marine’s 65.2 was enough for the win. Team Xtended Play took second with a 62.4, and Team Tuppens took third with a 59.2. “Team Beach Marine Products is blessed to have such a great group of fishermen on board,” Beach said. “Our team efficiency and confidence are incredible. It just flows.” The team consists of: Billy Delph, Travis Holeman, Teddy Beach, Daniel Delph and David Delph. They thanked their sponsors: SeaHunter Boats, Furuno Electronics, Beach Marine Products, JL Audio, Seakeeper and Bass Pro Shops. Following the March 8-10 Palm Beach Mayhem, the third leg of the series is the Ft. Lauderdale Meat Mayhem April 26-29. Teams with the heaviest combined weight of one kingfish from each event will be competing for more than $20,000 in prizes. For more on Meat Mayhem tournaments, go to www.meatmayhemtournaments.com. onditions were challenging, to say the least, at The 55th Buccaneer Cup Sailfish Release Tournament Jan. 25-27 in Palm Beach. But teams that fought through the weather were rewarded with off-the-charts fishing. Twenty-two teams battled 25-30 mph winds to release hundreds of sailfish over the two-day event that benefits the Recreational Fishing Alliance. Day one began with a dicey run out the inlet and a wet, pounding run to the grounds. Jim McGraph, of Grand Slam Tackle, called “Lines In” at 8 a.m. from the official radio room high atop the Jupiter Beach Resort and Spa. It wasn’t long before Miss Annie called in the first release at 8:07 a.m., and the bite did not let up. Within the first hour, 17 sails were released with several boats calling in doubles and triples. In ferocious winds and chop, more than 230 sailfish had been

released. Viking 68’s team pulled ahead at the end of day one with a 600 point lead, but with a red-hot bite, the leader board could easily swing based on who landed on a pod of sails. Day two opened with similar gray skies and honking east wind, and the strong bite continued with 14 sails released within the first hour. The live baiters had the edge on day two, with the Miss Victoria, Sandman and Two Cats making runs to catch the lead boat. Two Cats radioed a hook-up right before the “lines out” call at 3:30 p.m. That fish tied them at 7,500 points with the Viking 68. Due to the tie in points, the timing of the releases ultimately decided the winner and tipped the scale to the Viking crew who landed their final fish at 3:03 p.m. to reach the 7,500 points mark. The top-finishing boats were Viking 68 in first, Two Cats in second and Sandman just 100 points behind in third. It was truly a nail-biting finish with some epic fishing. Viking 68 also won the Charity Calcutta, which includes an entry fee to the 2019 Buc Cup. No doubt the Viking crew will be back next year trying for a repeat. Top angler trophies went to Tony Huerta on the Lo Que Sea in first with Sandra MacMillan on the Sandman taking second and the Top Female Angler prize. The Buccaneer Cup Tournament Cash award for the Most Points on Live Bait ($10,000) went to Sandman and the Most Points on Dead Bait ($10,000) went to Viking 68, which pocketed over $80,000 in total purse. The In The Bite Top Captain Trophy cup was awarded to Capt. Ryan Higgins, who skippered the Viking 68. The awards banquet was held at the Sailfish Club of Florida. Pat Healey, president of Viking Yachts and member of the RFA Board of Directors, presented Ellen Peel of The Billfish Foundation with a $5,000 check to aid the organization in its efforts to advance the science used for management of billfish.

hoosing the right fly reel can really make your head spin. From basic drags to sealed-disk braking systems, the prices and quality vary dramatically. My gut always tells me to get the best that I can. Buy it once and you won’t be replacing it in a couple of years. While this typically holds true for fly reels, there are instances when it can be overkill. If you are looking for an inshore 8-weight and will be typically chasing snook in the backcountry, the need for

a reel with a silky smooth drag and 300 yards of backing is pointless. You will likely be fighting most fish within 50 feet of you. And much of the time, you’ll be hand-lining them and have no need for a fancy drag system. In these situations, the reel is more of a line holder and can be much less expensive than their highly tuned cousins. A good starting point is deciding if you need a sealed drag reel. They are nice, and most are very well made with super smooth drags, but that comes at a price. A great advantage of these reels is that they are virtually maintenance free. The sealed drag keeps water out, so rinse them down well after fishing and, you are pretty much done. The negative is they are typically higher-end reels and a bit pricey. For nearly two decades I have fished with non-sealed drags and have never had an issue, but I need to do a little more maintenance and cleaning on those reels. Also, if you primarily fish from a boat where dunking a reel is not likely, this could be a great way to save some dough. Another important question is size, which often has to do with how much backing you think you will need. Since the tackle is lighter, it’s nice to have the line for long runs when fishing open areas, but again, if you typically fish tight spots there might not be a need for 300 yards of backing. Conversely, if you are looking to chase large tarpon or go offshore, you need plenty of backing. Larger arbors are great, even with limited backing. They allow you to pick up line at a much faster pace, making life easier on both the fish and fisher. Finally, opt for ported reels, as they are lighter and allow your backing to dry much faster. This is important for the longevity of the line. Smooth drags and plenty of backing are always nice. But be honest with yourself, this is an instance in which you can save a considerable amount of weight and money depending on the type of fishing you will be doing. Will Robinson is a seasoned tournament angler and has been writing about fishing for more than two decades. His picks for the best reels can be found at Galvanflyreels.com and Nautilusreels.com.

ant to take some Florida back to New England with you? If you’re reading this article, three things are apparent: 1. You enjoy fishing and the outdoors. 2. You have residence in one of our colder climate states. 3. You’re familiar with the term “Snowbird” This edition of the magazine that you are reading is one of our over 30 franchise locations throughout the country and is managed by our local franchisee co-publisher. Our current locations have us strategically located throughout the Eastern Seaboard, Costa Rica and the U.S. Virgin Islands. We’re looking to expand our presence in New England and the Great Lakes. We currently have 1. a Connecticut/Rhode Island location 2. a Boston, Massachusetts location 3. and a Long Island, New York franchise location We believe there is a need for a Cape Cod, a Gloucester, a New Hampshire, a Maine, and a Vermont edition(s) of the magazine. We also have a West Michigan edition, and we are interested in adding numerous Great Lakes locations. If you know someone in any of these areas that is a fishing fanatic, has an outgoing personality and a bit of ambition, please let them know that we are interested in speaking with them about taking part in our New England and Great Lakes expansion efforts.

These franchises are simple home-based businesses that are geared toward a modest investment and low monthly overhead. Our training program and support systems enable individuals with no prior publishing experience to successfully publish a localized edition of the magazine and to earn their livelihood in an industry that they are passionate about. Yes, it requires work. What doesn’t? But this enterprise can not only be profitable, it can be fun, rewarding and enriching, as they (possibly you) move into the position of publisher of a well loved and respected local fishing magazine. We’ll look forward to hearing from you (them) and hopefully seeing our northern presence expand. Thank you for reading our magazine. We are all very proud to provide it as a resource for the outdoor enthusiast.

Franchise Opportunites Coastal Angler and The Angler Magazines currently have established franchise locations in Boston, Connecticut, Long Island and Rhode Island. We are looking to add Cape Cod, New Hampshire, Gloucester, Maine, New York and Vermont to our Northeastern presense. • Home Based Business • Low Overhead • Complete Training Program • Ongoing Support • Proven Franchise Model

MARCH 2018

It’s Time for the Palm Beach International Boat Show Again The 2018 Palm Beach International Boat Show is coming to town Thursday, March 22nd from noon until 7 pm, Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm and Sunday from noon until 6pm. Coastal Angler Magazine has a special $5.00 discount off any single day admission at the show’s website www. pbboatshow.com with discount code CA18. We’ll also be giving away a pair of tickets on our website www.coastalanglermag.com/palm-beach. There will be valet parking available at Phillips Point to the south and a Sun Trolley running between City Place and the Clematis entrance to the show. Half a dozen garages with self-parking provide easy access to the show. The popular “Come By Boat” option is available again this year; tie up at the docks south of the in-water displays. Expect expanded in-water exhibits, farther south on the seawall than in years past. If recent shows in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami are indication, expectations are high for this show, one of the top five in the country, with over 1.2 billion worth of boats, yachts and accessories from the world’s leading marine manufacturers. There may be more in play than just our desire for the latest and greatest new toys. Hurricane Irma scarred Florida’s recreational boating community with an estimated 50,000 vessels valued at approximately $500 million damaged or destroyed, according to Scott Croft of Boat US. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservations Commission (FWC) has a current listing of vessels recovered in coordination with the United State Coast Guard that were wrecked/ sunken on the waters of the state during Hurricane Irma that totals 973 vessels, at the time of this writing. That’s a lot of pent up demand! Couple that with electronics and other accessories that have been damaged or destroyed, and there will likely be a lot of buyers at the show. Then there is the dilemma of buyer looking at a used vessel. How can you determine for certain that the boat you are considering is not a stormdamaged lemon? Another cause for concern that makes the prospect of a new boat at the show even more attractive. Boat inventories are strong, making dealers eager to make deals, and with interest rates at historic lows, lenders will be ready to comply with requests. A smart buyer will come prepared with some financing options lined up, if needed, and explore additional options available at the show.

Aside from the main event: the boats, there will be plenty of shopping, dining and other activities for the entire family. Among my favorite events at the show are the free kids fishing clinics offered Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Plan ahead so the kids can take advantage of this unique handson opportunity, located in the Amphitheater Field on Saturday at noon and 2 pm, Sunday at 1 & 3 pm. The Kids’ Fishing Clinics, presented by Hook the Future and The Palm Beach Post, are open to all kids ages 4-16 and feature marine life experts teaching kids basic fishing techniques. Upon completion of all learning stations, participating kids have a chance at great prizes. Hands-on, interactive instruction includes: • Casting a Rod & Reel • How to Fight a Fish • Selecting Tackle & Lures • Fishing Ethics The clinics are courtesy of the Palm Beach Post. Then for the serious anglers in the crowd, there are the IGFA School of Sports Fishing Seminars. They will host 14 seminars from some of the best All photos on this page by Forest Johnson cont’d on page 21

Fishing with Darcizzle by Darcie Arahill Contributing Writer Anglers, March Madness has arrived which means the fishing should offer plentiful action for a variety of species inshore and offshore this month! The sea temperatures will be warming up and cool fronts will begin to fizzle out as the month progresses. The wind will be your biggest rival because March is considered a transitional month as we head into the beginning of spring. Offshore, sailfish will be a likely catch in the beginning of March, but large numbers of migrating sails are already south of Palm Beach waters. On the bright side, the mahi mahi bite should improve. If we have a steady easterly wind, this should prompt you to rig some ballyhoo and head offshore. Look for conditions such as edges, temperature breaks, rips and debris. On the beach, spinner sharks will be relatively easy to locate. Scan the beach and drive your boat along the coast especially between Palm Beach Inlet and Jupiter inlet looking for jumping sharks. Once located start chumming and get some baits out. Live bait is great, but big chunks of bonita and barracuda will work. You should be looking for sea turtles and large sharks in shallow water too, cobia will be following them! Bottom fishing and jigging the deepwater wrecks off Boca, Boynton, or Palm Beach will yield big fish; AJ’s, kings, mutton snapper, Spanish mackerel, grouper and wahoo are all on the list.

In the IWC and rivers, there will plenty of inshore action for anglers to enjoy. Snook season has been open for a month already so get out there for your slot fish (28-32” on Florida’s Atlantic coast). Live bait is best—mullet if you can find them, pilchards, or just live shrimp from a local shop. Find some moving water or current, and throw that live bait or artificial under the docks, against seawalls, pilings, bridges, etc. For snook and tarpon, I like to use Yo-Zuri crystal minnow lip divers; trolling or just casting around structure. If the water is dirty, use dark colored lures and if the water is clear use light colored artificial lures. Say hello if you see on the water and until next time, keep on catchin’! Please be sure to check out my YouTube Channel “Darcizzle Offshore” for new fishing videos uploaded every week!

KAYAKFISHING Brian with a 10lb tripletail

by Brian Nelli, Contributing Writer INSHORE: Spring is in the air. Snook, redfish and trout will still be along mangroves and in between docks. Focus your time on points in the mangrove line and docks with the most current. Throwing DOA shad tails and jerk baits will work well matching the hatch of glass minnows in the water. This is one of the better times to also target tripletail. Look to find them around channel markers and buoys near the mouth of the Loxahatchee River and throughout the Indian River Lagoon. OFFSHORE: Fishing will start to pick up this month with larger kingfish and more mahi swimming through. The sailfish bite will continue to be good as well. Cobia in March has always been good for us. These fish will start to move from the beach to the reef line. Fishing Jupiter to Delray Beach reefs bouncing the bottom with jigs, sardines and pilchards are your best bets. Off the Treasure Coast hit places like the Sandpile and look for free swimming rays and sharks. Put your time in and you should find a few. FRESHWATER: The last few cold fronts slowed things down a bit, but the peacock bass, largemouth and clown knifefish are still biting. Live shiners and or shad are your best bets. All 3 of these fish will be looking for deeper water when the water temps get colder. Fishing later in the day to allow the sun to warm up the docks and bridges will also warm up the fish into biting. Check us out Pushin’ Water Kayak Charters on Facebook, Instagram and Youtube for all the latest adventures my clients and I get into. See you on the water! Tuppens Marine & Tackle Tuppen’s Marine & Tackle of the Palm Beaches has been at 1002 N. Dixie Highway in Lake Worth since 1956. Originally opened as Tuppen’s Woodworks by Sherman and Mildred Tuppen in the late 1940’s selling wood molding and cabinets, they began building wooden boats. In 1956 the business was renamed Tuppen’s Sporting Goods, carrying wood and aluminum boats. Between 1964 and 1988 they built thousands of Tuppen’s Turinos ranging from 15 to 18-foot vessels, the first selling with an engine for $1695. Sons Ron and Buddy Tuppen were involved in the business, bringing in tackle and Penn rods and reels. Buddy took on the task of mechanics school after attending UF, to learn to work on Evinrude engines. The business continues today, with the same small-town feel, with three locations. The Service department is down the street by the railroad tracks on G Street. In Hypoluxo, new and used boats are sold. The 10th Avenue location surprises first time visitors with the immense variety packed inside the store. Tuppen’s twenty-nine employees make it a point to get to know their customers, and assist them whether it’s apparel, tackle, marine and trailer supplies, or electronics. If they don’t have what you are looking for, they can probably get it, or point you in the right direction. The website www.tuppens.com offers free shipping on purchases over $100 within the US, with a few exceptions. The office in the middle of the store, where General Manager Jeff Cantwell now resides is still a visiting spot – a throwback to the days of Bud Tyska. You didn’t stop in the store without saying hello to Bud! Jeff and the crew will be at the Palm Beach Boat Show offering special discounts and a new innovative product that they are anxious to reveal at the show. Stop in, say hello, and tell them you saw the story in Coastal Angler.

DRIFTFISHING by Sandra Schulz Contributing Writer The drift for March will depend on the weather. The ocean can be calm or rough, temperatures may be hot or cold and it does dictate how and what we drift for. With strong easterly winds it will usually blow mahi-mahi in closer to our fishing ground with average depths of 80-140 feet. But along with those winds, it will usually kick up the ocean seas. When we get the north-northwest winds, it is a very favorable time to vermillion snapper fish because a north current will help to stay on the spot longer and Catch from a recent trip on “Living give you a little more time for catching. On a Island Time” out of Hypoluxo The depths locally off Boynton Beach for this species is about 220-240 feet. We can catch some pink porgies and tasty trigger fish too. This type of fishing requires a little more work than fishing for yellowtails or mutton snapper on the reefs because of the deeper waters. We use 8-ounce bank sinkers and 2 or 3 separate lead hooks above it using 1/0 J-hooks or circle hook with small piece of cut squid. You drop to the bottom and if they are there, it won’t take long to reel them up, rebait and do it all over again. As you can see it’s a lot of reeling but can be very rewarding for a tasty treat at the dinner table. Vermillion snapper is a medium texture and flake with a mild sweet flavor and can be used with any snapper recipe. The average vermillion locally is between 1-3 pounds but can reach up to 6 pounds on the high side with a lot of meat for its size. You may also get lane snappers as well. So, if you are up to the workout and conditions are favorable you could be bringing up two or three fish at a time. Strong Showing by Marine Max planned for PBIBS MarineMax will once again have the premiere “center stage” location at the Palm Beach Boat Show this month. Palm Beach Gardens Manager Kyle Roney is expecting a tremendous show, as the recent Ft Lauderdale show set new records in sales with over a 10% increase in units and 8% increase in dollar sales over previous years. Their current inventory of 1600 new boats valued at over 1.2 billion, with an additional 350 used boats means they are ready to deal! There is more immediate availability to go boating than ever before. MarineMax has relationships with banks that they leverage to better serve their customers. You will find special deals at the show, including double manufacturer rebates on select Regional President Paul Cummings, Manager Kyle Roney models and extra financing incentives. Representatives from all their manufacturers will be and the Palm Beach Team present to assist with questions and to help put deals together. There will be a broad selection of brands including Azimut, Boston Whaler, Galeon, Ocean Alexander, Scout and Sea Ray for you to board. Two vessels that are sure to get a lot of attention at this year’s show are the Sea Ray SLX 400 and the Sea Ray 32 Sundance. While all the dealers may look the same at the show, the MarineMax difference is what you experience after the show. That’s where they excel, with their total boating experience. They offer classes of Women in Water and Kids in Boating, along with Getaway Trips. They help you discover how to use your new boat, give you opportunities to use it, and make sure every member of the family is comfortable using it. MarineMax has 4 locations including Dania, Pompano, Palm Beach Gardens and Stuart that serve the Southeast Florida market with 115 team members. Those locations have access to three 75-ton travel lifts, six fork trucks and twelve mobile service vans. There is a Captain dedicated to delivery of vessels and another for the Getaway Trips. I spoke with the Getaways Captain Chris Fink about this years’ planned excursions. They are going to Ocean Reef, Faro Blanco Marina in Marathon (they open for business), to Bimini, Nassau, West End, Abaco, The Exumas, and Key West, just to name a few. Visit MarineMax at the Boat Show, and I am sure you will be able to view streaming video of their recent Getaways. The photography is spectacular. You will see families having a tremendous amount of fun while enjoying a lot of great food and beverages in some of the most beautiful places in the world! MarineMax Palm Beach is located at the PGA Marina, 2361 PGA Blvd in Palm Beach Gardens, on the west side of the Intracoastal waterway. Visit team members Kelsey Lemiere, Ellen Hanson, Thomas Tally, Danny Brown, Tyler Hill and manager Kyle Roney to find out what the MarineMax total boating experience is all about!

SOUTH COUNTY INSHORE & FRESHWATER By Capt. Patrick Smith

Spring is right around the corner and here is your forecast for March. After a cooler than normal winter we are all more than ready for some warmer water and so are the fish. March is known to be windy, but luckily there are so many options here that there is always something to target. On the Freshwater side the peacock bite will be getting back to normal after the cold snap killed some fish and the appetites of the survivors. I suggest using a chrome rattle trap in open areas and silver or white flukes around docks. Both of these lures will produce large mouths, sunshine bass and clown knife fish. Fishing in the Glades will be awesome. While fishing the flats I like to throw Gambler big ez in ghost shad and zoom horny toads in black and watermelon. Chartreuse and white spinner baits work well once the sun gets high. The fly fishing will be great with poppers in the morning and evening. Midday baitfish patterns can be effective; one of my favorites is the E.P. peanut butter in olive and tan. Steve with a nice cubera Saltwater really heats up in March with the appearance of big tarpon, jacks and snook around the bridges and docks. In the morning I would suggest using top water, such as a zara spook or large popper. Remember to work it slow and let it pause every few seconds; they will kill it on the pause. Once the sun is up a DOA TerrorEyz (I’m a fan of the golden bream color) or cal jig is sure to get you tight on anything that swims. My favorite time to chase snook and tarpon is when they are the happiest, which is at night around the bridges. A suspending Yozuri crystal minnow in black and silver could very well be the only lure you need to bring with you. Please keep in mind when fishing bridges from the top or a boat that respect goes both ways and we need to share the water. If the weather allows it the real fun will be happening outside the Boynton inlet close to the beach with the spinner shark migration being in full swing. These guys should be very cooperative on poppers, flies and cutbaits. Remember to use a reel that holds plenty of line as their first run can Shannon Constantide with an awesome seem to go on forever, a fly peacock on fly caught in Boynton Beach rod in 10-12 weight should be able to get it done. For flies I use a floating orange tube fly rigged with 1.5 ft of #6 wire and 7ft of 100lb mono. Don’t forget to submit your pics to Barbara@CoastalAnglerMagazine. com to get on the brag board. I hope the tips help you get tight on a nice one. Capt. Patrick Smith Swamp to Sea Guide Service www.swamptosea.com •561-503-0848

Florida Rope & Chain

If you need anything, and I do mean anything, that has to do with a rope or a chain, the go-to source in Palm Beach County, and beyond, is Florida Rope & Chain, just east of the railroad tracks at Forest Hill Blvd on Norton Ave in West Palm Beach. Rob Noel has been in business at the same location for 27 years. Originally from Michigan, Rob moved to the area with his family, at the age of 15, attending Forest Hill High School. He had a Valet Service in the area for 14 years, then joined his father, Tom in the family business, Noel’s Distributing, a wholesale marine distributor, celebrating 40 years in business this year! Rob opened Florida Rope & Chain, which is more of a retail operation. He specializes in ropes, chains and other nautical needs. Custom splicing of ropes and rigging are their primary business, but he can order practically anything. When I was visiting with him, he was working on several 12 strand braided lines for a local marina that could pick up 115,000 lbs. He also took delivery of a “windless chain” for a client from Cape Canaveral, totaling more than 1200 lbs. If you are looking for stainless chain, you will be amazed at the greatly reduced prices here, compared to major retail locations. Crammed in this space, you can find anything you need for your boat; bins and bins of stainless; hundreds of thousands of pieces of hardware; everything you need for safety inspections. There is mooring equipment, supplies for your dock including deck boxes, bumpers and hoses. Rob has recently began carrying inflatable bumpers, which save storage space, in addition to Taylor Fenders. When Rob is not at the shop, he may be playing a round of golf at Lake Worth Municipal or “Chill-laxing” on his 20’ Grady White. Rob working on a client’s order

FISHINGFORECAST PALM BEACH INSHORE & OFFSHORE By Capt. Weston Russell

Welcome to the March madness fishing forecast for Palm Beach Fl. Expect some great action offshore. Dolphin, blackfins and sails will be roaming our waters looking for something to eat. Big blackfins will be taken on live baits out in 200’ off the Breakers. If you’re a troller, use small blue & white feathers. Also, there will be some wahoo eating the smaller tuna. It’s not a bad idea to have a deeper bait trolling for wahoos. Try a lure that looks like a small blackfin tuna. Good luck! The inshore and beach fishing will be hot this time of year. Spinner sharks will be on their migration and they will eat anything, dead or alive. When hooked they can give a super aerobatic display. Also, on the beach will be tarpon and monster jacks. Leave the snoopy rod at home because you’re going to need the big guns. A 40 lb. class rod and reel will work great. Live bait will be the best bet. Cruise the beach until you see a school of fish. There’s a few ideas for you anglers... remember you can’t catch them from the couch! Captain Weston Russell 561-310-2690 www.reelintensefishing.com Facebook.com/ reelintensefishingcharter

WPB Fishing Club Receives Historic Marker The Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, has approved an official State Historic Marker for the venerable West Palm Beach Fishing Club (WPBFC) located at Fifth Street and North Flagler Drive in downtown West Palm Beach. The 83-year old organization was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. The Historic Marker recognizes the organization’s notable contributions to the region related to tourism, marine conservation advocacy and civic outreach, especially during the period following the Great Depression and during the post-World War II era. The marker will be placed along Fifth Street in the club’s front yard. “The City of West Palm Beach has a treasure in this building and even more so in the history and mission of the Club, as evidenced by its rich interior. Most people are probably not aware of the amazing conservation and civic endeavors the Club has undertaken. I’m excited that this marker will give passerby’s a glimpse of this history and hopefully inspire them to explore the Club,” said Friederike Mittner, City of West Palm Beach Historic Preservation Planner. Placement of the official Historic Marker is a milestone event for the WPBFC and is the culmination of an effort that has been underway for over a decade. “Being on the National Register Review Board of the Florida Historic Commission for the past 10 years, I have never encountered such a small, relatively simple, historic building with so much local history. Under the category of community services in the fishing industry, so vital to locals and visitors, the West Palm Beach Fishing Club has been, and will continue to be, for many decades the place of fond memories in South Florida fishing tales,” commented Rick Gonzalez, President REG Architects. To celebrate the unveiling of the Historic Marker, an Open House is scheduled for Thursday, March 22nd and Friday, March 23rd, from 10am to 5pm daily at the WPBFC clubhouse.

ROAD TRIPFISHING Time to Build by Keith Lozott, Contributing Writer The last month or so has been extremely slow for me on the fishing scene. I think I’ve fished only two or three times because of windy conditions, my daughter’s birthday party, the new year, holidays, my main fishing partner went to Canada for a month and of course work seems to be keeping the boat in the garage. Not being able to fish is always a major drag. I’m always tinkering around with my tackle, reorganize the boat for no reason, practice casting and think about where I’m gonna fish next when I get the chance. This stretch off the water has been no different, except I decided to head to North Fork Bait and Tackle in Port St. Lucie and take a rod building class. Steve who runs the shop is an extremely nice guy that is ready to help you learn the craft of rod building. I figured how hard could it be to build a rod and to my surprise it has been very detailed and difficult to accomplish. I picked an inshore rod that will handle trout, reds, snook and jacks on flats that I fish. Steve had a cool looking black rod blank with a nice pattern on the bottom third of the blank. I selected bright yellow guide wrapping thread and blue trim thread that I was going to highlight the wraps with which looked great on Work in progress a practice rod. We installed a blue Winn Grip and a blue aluminum reel seat which is going Finished product on the rod.. to really pop if I buy a new Diawa 2500 Saltist reel to match. So now it was time to start wrapping the hook keeper and guides, which if you’re anything like myself you like things to look perfect! Steve showed me the wrap technique and I went to town. The first guide only took me around 8 times and at least an hour or two to complete; the second guide took 4 times and the hook keeper 3 or 4 times as well. I know that I’m making this sound painful, but I must admit I’m finding the process extremely therapeutic and calming. I need a pair of reader glasses to help me see the up-close wraps. Steve has a lighted magnified glass but it’s too much for my eyes. I’ve been going to the shop when I have some free time to finish the rod and it’s coming along nicely. By the time this article is printed the rod will have been doubled over hooked up to a monster trout on the flats. Another bonus to this cool new experience is you meet other fisherman that have your very same affinity towards fishing. I figured Steve was laughing internally with how long it’s taking me to finish my rod but then I met Gary who is building his second rod and I must say it looks awesome. He has been building it at his house and at North Fork for two weeks and it’s finally completed. His story was almost the same as mine with multiple times wrapping the same guides, hook keepers, etc. and he keeps coming back for more. So, give it a shot and try and build a rod the next time you’re off the water for any length of time, I think you’ll be happy you did! Tight lines until next time.

COASTALKIDS My Fishing Adventures

by Christopher Sprague Jr. Angler-Team Tuppens

Hello Anglers, We fished the Meat Mayhem in Key West, where we heard the weather was going to be nasty. This is the first big tournament of the new year. We traveled 47 miles to get to our spot. The day did not start well as we had our first bait caught in our prop, and then we got our downrigger ball caught on an old lobster pot. We also got cut off 3 times in a row!! Finally, we started catching kingfish, but nothing big. We watched a boat next to us haul in a big fish, we circled around and then our reel started screaming!!! We had our hopes high, but it ended up being a giant amberjack. We heard our friends on Spiced Rum III had a couple big fish just 1 mile to our East. We reeled all our gear in and moved to a new location. After several hours, we had only a few kingfish, but nothing bigger than 25. We kept on fishing, and then we heard a scream! Downrigger!!! Fish on!! After 10 long minutes, we saw a huge silver fish in the water. We gaffed the kingfish and we were in awe!!! We guessed it to be 60 pounds. We tried a little more, but it was getting late, so we headed in. At weigh-in, Looks like that the scale showed 59.2 pounds! could be a winner! We got 3rd biggest kingfish and our friends Spiced Rum III got first place aggregate. There were 10 fish weighed in all over 50 lbs. Key West produces monster kingfish!! I am looking forward to a lot of tournaments coming soon.

JUNO BEACHPIER by Hannah Deadman Contributing Writer Grab your bait and come visit us at the Juno Beach Pier! In March, warmer temperatures are bringing plenty of pompano to the area. Catch these guys on bait like clams, sand fleas, shrimp and goofy jigs. You can also catch beautiful Spanish LMC Kid’s Fishing Program on the Juno Beach mackerel on lures and jigs like Photo credit to Loggerhead Marinelife Center. Gotcha lures, Flash Minnows and Clark Spoons. Bluefish, crevalle jacks and blue runners can be caught with finger mullet, sardines, diamond jigs and spoons. As usual, croakers and whiting are best caught on shrimp. Loggerhead Marinelife Center offers its Kids’ Fishing Program every Saturday of the month at 8 a.m. Participants learn basic pier and beach fishing techniques, including knot tying, casting and ethical angling. Email sthompson@ marinelife.org to register. Cost: $10/angler; participants meet at LMC. LMC’s Deep Blue and You Yoga program, taught by a certified instructor, occurs the third Saturday every month (October-April) from 10-10:45 a.m. at the Juno Beach Pier, following the monthly Blue Friends Beach Cleanup. For updates on LMC and Juno Beach Pier events, follow our social media, visit www.marinelife.org or call (561) 627-8280.

FISHINGFORECASTS Capt. Craig

JUPITER INLET INSHORE By Craig Korczynski

March has arrived, and this month is full of drag screaming action. March is typically very windy but offers plenty of rod bending action. Spring rains trigger a good bite during low light hours and spillways open, ringing the dinner bell for snook and tarpon. May the luck of the Irish be with you. Jupiter offers a wide variety of species to target including snook, tarpon, trout, jacks and redfish. Whether live baiting, fly fishing or using artificial lures, anglers should focus their attention on seawalls, docks, grass flats and mangrove shorelines. The key to successful fishing is locating moving water and most importantly bait fish. Snook season is back in action for all linesider fanatics. The action will be fantastic as the snook begin to trickle from back bays and begin to settle on sand flats, under docks, next to sea walls and near inlets. Look for any signs of bait fish and current and you will locate snook. Night fishing is another great option for anglers in search of snook. Docks Terry with a tarpon and bridges are excellent areas to pinpoint schooling snook and monster snook. Jigging a DOA C.A.L. or DOA TerrorEyz for snook are great choices, but many anglers enjoy using live shrimp under the lights. Fly anglers this is your time to shine; fly casters can enjoy

Tommy and Curt with a pair of snook

epic snook action, with catches reaching over 60 fish a night. I like to use the 2-inch DOA shrimp for steady rod bending action or small white flies mimicking small bait fish. The tarpon continues to occupy deep channels leaving great opportunities for anglers to target rolling fish near the surface. Try to read where the tarpon is heading and study their actions. This will allow you to choose your best method to present your bait and position your boat. DOA Bait Busters and live mullet or greenies will leave you bowing to the silver king. These fish are great for their acrobatic leaps and drag screaming runs. The size of the tarpon ranges from 5 to 90 pounds. The docks and seawalls in the Lake Worth Lagoon are teeming with life as jacks, snook, trout, snapper, grouper, flounder and trout patrol for their next meal. DOA C.A.L. and DOA shrimp in holographic and ? glow gold belly rush are excellent for working the docks, along with live bait worked on the bottom. A top water Heddon Spook Jr. chugged early morning and late afternoon along seawalls provides heart pumping action. There is nothing better than watching a jack or snook become airborne with your lure in its mouth. Well that is the fishing report for the Lake Worth Lagoon and Jupiter area, hope you all enjoyed. Just remember you can’t catch them from the couch so get out there and get hooked up. Tight Lines! Captain Craig Korczynski 561-644-4371 • www.phlatsinshorefishing.com

A WINTER EXCURSION Story & photos by Michael Landress Contributing Writer The unmistakable silhouette of a magnificent frigate differs from the gannet and so too, this fishing excursion was like no other. I’m moving sloth-like this Saturday morning after an eighthour split charter in three-to-five Atlantic seas on Friday. It’s winter in South Florida and the cool winds wail from the Great White North. The churning seas have a bounty of sails, pelagic reptiles hunting drifting man-o-war, bastard sharks; seabirds, sky-rocketing mackerel royalty, baitfish and dolphins. We witnessed all on this trip. Ryan, a Minnesota native and I chugged North from the Palm Beach Inlet to the waters off Jupiter with Captain Alex Burgess and his 29’ center console built by Sea Vee. The twin Mercury outboards pushed us through the slop to the fishing grounds. On arrival, our brassy young captain set the kites as Ryan and I bantered about life. Although we didn’t solve any pressing world issues I enjoyed his company. I captured 2,000 images on three different cameras which is normal, but I also free-spooled and hooked a sail, and gladiatorgaffed two hefty kingfish which is not. Captain Chris Lemieux has taught this elder well over the previous ten years of fishing on the Conch Cruiser. “The gaff is a rake not a shovel.” A quote from a friend of mine they call Jake that is forever engrained in my brain. We finished an extremely cool, bumpy day with a tally of fourfor-five on sails all hooked and released, five-for-nine on kingfish -- the largest, perhaps 40-pounds, was taken by a giant bull shark as the sun vanished in the western sky.

by Chris Anders Contributing Writer Like to go long distances? Touring Boards are a must for every true SUP enthusiast. Touring boards are great for exploring long distances on calm waters. People often get the wrong idea about touring/race paddle boards. Most of my customers are new to paddle boarding and get intimidated by it resembling the lines of a race board. Most newbies don’t know what type of board they need and many choose the most basic, smallest and least expensive board against the advice of a seasoned rider. A casual rider would really enjoy a touring board and would possibly try long distance or racing. Touring boards give you a sense of stability and with stability comes confidence. One of the major benefits of a touring board is that they are displacement hulls which equates to speed. So if you do want to be behind the pack and look like a seasoned veteran, a touring board is for you. Some other great options that touring boards offer are a lot of leash plugs. I own a 14’ Riviera Voyager and it has 14 leash plugs front to back and I convert this board into a fishing board also. In the front I have a fishing set up with rod holders and gear bag, and in the rear I have a cooler, plus the GoPro mount. I have also raced this board in small local races. Characteristics of a Touring Board. • Displacement Hull. The first and most obvious characteristic of a touring or race board is going to the pointed nose which is referred to as a displacement hull. This will look similar to the shape of a boat and allows the board to slice thru the water for increased stability and speed. This is most desirable in flat water conditions but also allows the board to cut thru chop and give you a more powerful push with each paddle stroke. • Narrow Profile. Most touring or race boards will be slightly more narrow than a traditional paddle board, this sleek design decreases drag and overall weight allowing the board to move faster and be more fluid in the water. Common widths in these types of boards are anywhere from 25”- 32”. • Longer Length. Touring and race boards can range in length based on what they are built to do. A race trainer (shaped like a race board, but shorter) could start around 10’0″ long and actual race boards can go up to 18’ with the most common race sizes being 12’6” or 14’. • More Volume / Thicker Profile. Since touring and race boards are generally more narrow than traditional boards, they make up for that lost volume in their thickness. This is also the reason why these narrow boards still feel so stable. Chris Anders, CEgO ThePalmBeachBoatClub. com • 561-840-1901

ON THE RANGE by Chuck Papp Contributing Writer Well the 2018 Shot Show has come and gone, and this year appears to be no different than previous years with the arrival of new firearms, ammo, and gear for the upcoming year. As far as handguns go it seems the new favorite is the Sig Sauer p365. This seems like the new carry pistol for licensed cwp holders. It’s a double stacked 9mm carry gun with a striker fired mechanism. Another is the Glock 19x. Basically a full-size 9mm pistol with a 17rd magazine capacity, equipped with night sights, lanyard ring, and in a FDE finish. May be the way to go for a backup firearm for the hunter or outdoors person. The big news in shotguns seems to be the Remington and Mossberg DM series, which is a box fed magazine instead of the tube fed design. Now I must say, to each his own on this one. I see no practical purpose for this short of wanting to switch out different shotshell, slugs, or buckshot quicker. For that reason, only, it may serve someone’s needs better. The Mossberg Shockwave and Remington Tac series of 12ga firearms are now available in different finishes, and now in 20ga versions. For someone looking for that classic double barrel shotgun, Savage has brought out the classic Fox model. Better have saved your pennies though, they will start around $5000.00 and will be sought after making them hard to get. As far as rifles go, Ruger has brought out their Precision Series in a 22lr offering and Maurer has brought out an economy version of their popular bolt action hunting rifle in the M18. It may go for around $700.00 but you are getting a very nice rifle. You can spend less and get less. This one appears to bring a new standard to the economy line of hunting rifles. As far as the MSR style of rifles go, which is your AR 15 type, there have been additions made, but at this time the market is flooded with this type of rifle. With lack luster sales along with a slowing market for these rifles, how many make it out is yet to be seen. So, this year does not look too bad if you are out to get a firearm, for your collection or just to maybe get your first.

pring is around the corner, and a lot of fishermen who hang up their gear for the winter can’t wait for the temps to rise. Although the enthusiasm is high, spring can be a difficult season to successfully pattern and consistently catch fish inshore. Most fish are still in transition between the deep mud and the shallow sand and grass flats, which has them spread out through the bays. Add high winds, cool fronts, the small size of the forage, and you have a tougher puzzle to put together than the other three Photo courtesy of Controlled seasons. I have put together Descent Lures a few tips to help you sort though this maze and hopefully land a few more fish this spring. First and foremost, the size of the baitfish is extremely small this time of year. It is not uncommon to find dozens of small glass minnows in the bellies of trout and reds in spring. This makes my first tip very obvious. Downsize your lure presentation if you can. Obviously, this can impact one’s casting abilities, so rigging small lures in tandem can be a plus and increase casting distance. Something else I like to use in the spring is a clear or transparent lure with some glitter or maybe one with a light translucent color. I choose these because it’s more difficult for the fish to see its actual size and gives the appearance of being smaller than it actually is. I’ve found this to be a productive alternative to downsizing my lure. While choosing a typical size trout and red lure for this application, I look for one with subtle movements. I like either a darting-style bait or a very subtle vibrating paddle lure. Strong, big vibrating tails have their place, but early spring is not one of them. One thing I notice about schools of small baitfish is that when they are displaced they seldom dart deeper before quickly regrouping. Most of their movement is to the side and up. Due to this characteristic, I also like a light lure that has a slow sink rate. I feel this imitates the spring forage movements and increases my strikes. I like a lure you can twitch from side to side that doesn’t sink very fast on the pause. In early spring while the fish are in transition, they will start to congregate on sandy shores with grass. This will be the main cover for the small fry. While employing these techniques and lure choices, concentrate your efforts on broken grass flats with potholes and distinct edges. Early in the season, areas like these near deeper water is where I would start. I hope you find these tactics helpful. As the weather warms and you enjoy the outdoors, don’t forget to take a kid fishing!

ivers and lionfish hunters: Do you have what it takes to become a Reef Ranger? The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has updated its Reef Rangers website (ReefRangers.com), and the program is ready for more participants. Reef Rangers is a yearround lionfish removal program where individuals and teams of divers pledge to remove lionfish from adopted reef sites of their choice. You can compete with other harvesters for a top spot on the leadership board and network with other lionfish harvesters around the state. The program is a great way to practice your lionfish-harvesting skills before the 2018 Lionfish Challenge and Tagged-Lionfish Removal Incentive programs begin on May 19. Targeted and consistent removals are known to have a positive impact on native species and habitat, which is why these programs are important and effective in controlling the lionfish population. Explore the interactive map to see where others have been removing lionfish across Florida, and do your part to contribute to statewide removal efforts. Sign up today to receive your very own Reef Rangers lionfish T-shirt, tank sticker and magnet, and continue your removals and harvest reports to earn more prizes. Not a diver? You can also support a team by visiting our sponsorship page or support FWC lionfish control efforts by donating to our nonprofit organization, the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida.

ot freezing temperatures or nor’easters or hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose or Maria can stop “Andy,” a tiger shark tagged in Bermuda by scientists from Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) in 2014. Travelling approximately 37,565 miles off the eastern coast of the United States and around Bermuda, the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, Andy is now the longest tracked tiger shark on record and shows no sign of slowing down. He’s been going for more than 1,240 days. “We are delighted with how long Andy has reported data, which has tremendous value for us as researchers,” said Mahmood Shivji, Ph.D., the director of NSU’s GHRI and a professor in the university’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography. “This amazing, nearly three and a half year track is revealing clear repeated patterns in the shark’s migrations between summer and winter.” More than 150 sharks, including tigers, makos and oceanic whitetips, have been tagged by the GHRI in the last decade. The data collected is used to study the migration patterns of these incredible creatures. Andy and many other GHRI tagged sharks can be followed online in near real-time at www.GHRItracking.org. “Tracking the migration patterns of sharks, like Andy, for extended periods of time allow us to better understand their behavior and habitat utilization, resulting in better knowledge on how to manage the species,” said world renowned artist and Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF) Chairman Guy Harvey, Ph.D.

pring means one thing to me… bedding bass! This is that magical time of the year when giant bass come to the shallows to procreate. Depending on where you fish, the first waves of bedding bass could show up in February or earlier, and in some places the spawn stretches through the spring and into summer. Their movement is affected by moon phases somewhat, but more so by water temperature. Once it’s in the 60-degree range, start combing the shallows for white spots where they’ve fanned out a bed with their tails. Once you’ve located them, it is important to understand that they’ve located you. Bass are extremely aware of their surroundings. This makes it difficult at times to trigger a fish to take a lure. I like to run through an area with the trolling motor on high and put a 6-foot tomato stake right smack in the middle of the bed that’s holding the fish I intend to catch. Then I leave the area and allow the fish to calm down. During this waiting period, I might spend an hour doing the same thing in another area or probe the deeper areas surrounding the flat looking for pre- or post-spawn fish. Fish will be in all three spawning stages throughout spring, and any shallows that hold fish will have fish in the deeper water nearby. After an hour or so, sneak back quietly into the area you’ve staked out. Pole in, let the wind blow you in or troll in at a very low speed. Remember, you must be quiet, which means no banging around. Have everything you need on the deck of the boat. This is when a shallow-water anchoring system is worth its weight in gold. Minn Kota Talons and Power Poles are the premier systems available. Other less costly ways to anchor a boat are available as well, like Boatsticks at boatsticks.com. You’ll want to position your boat far enough from the bed to not spook the fish, but close enough to cast several yards beyond the target. You need two Texas-rigged baits—a Z-Man Grass KickerZ and a Punch CrawZ. These baits float in the upright position, which tells a bass that something is feeding on her eggs. Swim the Grass Kicker over the bed several times. This will get the fish fired up. Then hop it right into the bed and stop it. Give it a pulsating action. If this doesn’t provoke the fish to eat, try hopping the Punch CrawZ on the bed. Sometimes you have to go back and forth with those baits to entice a strike, but often you will get them to eat right away. When you do this enough, you’ll learn to understand the fish’s behavior. If a fish runs big circles away from the bed and is slow to come back, it might not be catchable. If she displays aggression and stays close to the bed, that’s a catchable fish.

“F

ish happy my friends.” Those are the words James “Docky” Smith wrote when he autographed his new book, “Through a Guide’s Eye.” Ironically, he wrote them when happiness and fishing were words I couldn’t say in the same breath. That wasn’t always the case. I love everything about bonefishing so passionately that my husband and I decided to buy a house in the Bahamas after fishing five days straight with Docky Smith. It was not a difficult decision. Out on the flats, one is lured into a Zen-like tranquility surrounded by miles and miles of every shade of aqua marine. Gin clear waters

reveal a buffet of ocean life, starfish, conch, stingrays, turtles, crabs… everything but bonefish. To the unpracticed eye, they are “ghosts.” Their silvery, translucent scales seamlessly blend with the white sands below. For Docky, however, spotting them is a “piece of cake.” I have never known anyone with more extraordinary eyesight. When fishing with Docky, one of the most challenging aspects of bonefishing is served up on plate. Poling the flats, the quiet is punctuated by the gentle shifting of the pole and the eerie wail of the mangroves. I am poised with fly rod in hand, and Docky will say, “Okay get ready for me now.” My body tenses with anticipation. “10 o’clock, 30 feet out,” Docky says. “Oh please, let this be a good cast, not one that flops down or gets carried in the wind or worse, ends up in my bun,” I think. I cast, not great but good enough for Docky to say, “Now strip slowly.” Then… his magic words: “Set it.” The fish takes off like a rocket, draining your reel of line, and every thrilling moment vibrates in your hand. That is fishing happy. It doesn’t always transpire like that. Sometimes the fish elude you, sometimes they spook, or sometimes you can’t get your fly in front of them. But I still love it and come back year after year. Last fall I was out with Docky wading. The fish were in range. I cast and cast, but I wasn’t casting! I’d invented a whole other movement that couldn’t have been more wrong. It was such a bad feeling. I stepped aside for my husband, and he pulled out three from the school. I went home with my tail between my legs. I was angry and disgusted. We returned to Long Island six weeks later, and the gloom of my previous pathetic performance still lingered. “Fish happy. Fish happy. Fish happy.” All of a sudden it came back to me. Docky had me casting correctly in less than five minutes. Moments later, I was hooked up with a gorgeous Bahamas bonefish. James “Docky” Smith has over 25 years of bonefish guiding experience and is owner/operator of Bonafide Bonefishing in Long Island, Bahamas, operating out of Stella Maris Resort Club.

fter a launch at their recent January show, Surf Expo will be expanding the new Bluewater section in the upcoming Sept. 6-8 show in Orlando. Bluewater showcases inshore and offshore apparel and accessory companies. The January show was anchored by outdoor industry company leaders Yeti, Salt Life and Bimini Bay.

“One of the ideas behind Bluewater was to centralize our saltwater apparel and accessory exhibitors to make them easier to find for the buyers who come to the show,” said Surf Expo Show Director Roy Turner. “The response from both attendees and exhibitors was resounding approval.” “It’s a brand new section and it’s perfect for us. It fits our lifestyle,” Jeff Stillwell, president of Salt Life said about the Bluewater section. “Everything we do is connected to the water. Where some people may be just a surf shop or sell surfboards or one particular thing, we’re everything fishing, diving, surfing, so it’s perfect for us. I hope they expand it.” Jon Staton, owner of Hooked Soul said, “This was our fifth year at Surf Expo and our first time in the Bluewater section. Our location and neighbors were great and a success was had by many we could see. We look forward to growing our business in the new section.” Inspired by like-minded watersports brands, the Bluewater section connects to the waterman lifestyle that has always been a part of Surf Expo’s DNA. Featured products ranged from performance and lifestyle apparel, accessories, outerwear, footwear, sportswear, dive and much more. The new section also had a Bluewater lounge sponsored by Hell’s Bay Boatworks and a guest appearance by legendary waterman Flip Pallot. “For us, Surf Expo is an additional branding opportunity; another place for us to see our customers and meet potential customers. With the Bluewater section, it just brings more and more of our type of customers to Surf Expo,” added Chris Peterson, owner/president of Hell’s Bay Boatworks. The Bluewater section for the September show will be centrally located on Surf Expo’s show floor. It will be bordered by the Paddle and Surf sections, offering crossover opportunities for buyers and sellers alike. Surf Expo is a trade-only event. For more information contact Kenneth Andres at Kenneth. Andres@surfexpo.com. More information about Surf Expo can be found at www.surfexpo.com.

Make reel memories.

Stuart, located in Martin County, is known as the Sailfish Capital of the World. Sitting on the most biodiverse estuary in the Northern Hemisphere, and the northernmost point of the South Florida Reef, Martin County is home to 100 artificial reef systems and over 800 species of fish. Its climate, waterways and natural environment make it a mecca for fishermen and nautical explorers year-round. An array of unique shops, fine restaurants, great golf courses and quiet beaches make a day ashore fun, too. Inshore, offshore, salt water or fresh, head out for an adventure and reel in the memories.

“W

hen is the best time to fish?” has to be the most common question I am asked as a captain in the Florida Keys. Any time of the year can be the best time of year depending on what you’re looking for. The constantly changing weather and the different fishing it provides is what makes fishing here very special. All in the same day, you can cast at large fish in inches of water and feed baits to legendary deep-water gamefish. Having an open mind, being properly informed and preparing in advance are the keys to ensuring a fishing trip to the Keys is the adventure of a lifetime. First you have to determine your priorities. Are you looking to catch fish to eat, like tasty grouper? Are you looking to target legendary catchand-release gamefish, such as the mighty tarpon? Is there a particular time of year you want to fish and target the best bite, or is there a particular species to cross off your bucket list? The Keys are completely surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The two are connected by a complex system of channels that snake between the islands. The inshore scene is dominated by the “slam,” or tarpon, permit and bonefish. Methods for targeting these fish include sight fishing in shallow water or drifting the edges of deep-water channels. Unusually warm weather in winter can create short windows of incredible fishing, but north winds shut these species down. Early bites in late February to March can be red hot. They can be the best bite of the year, especially for trophy fish with a fly rod. However, if your trip occurs during a cold snap, fishing can get real tough. Summer and early fall have the most consistent weather. It is prime time for targeting bonefish and small tarpon. These smaller fish are more aggressive and are a great way to break into the sport.

MARCH 2018

If you desire a short run to the open ocean, the Florida Keys are also the place for you. Most fishing occurs within a mile of the reef line, which is only about 7 miles offshore. In addition to catch-andrelease billfish, many tasty species inhabit these waters, such as blackfin tuna, cobia, king mackerel, wahoo and dolphin. The “season” for these fish starts in the fall, when cooling waters push bait into the area. Big-time gamefish can be seen blowing up baits in as little as 15 feet of water, offering a unique sight fishing opportunity. Once the water heats up, you get the spring migration. When Gulf Stream currents push in close to the reef, fish move in to feast as they work toward summer spawning grounds. Whatever fish you crave, the Florida Keys has the trip for you. The best way to plan a trip is to talk to the right guide. Speak directly with a captain who will provide the best answers to your questions. Contact Capt. Nate Wheeler at (305) 394-2177 or capt.natewheeler@aol.com. See his website at www.waypointfishing.net.

he 2018 season is in full swing in Nosara, Costa Rica. The five boats of the FishingNosara team have already run 225 trips since our season kicked-off in November, and show no signs of slowing down. As usual, the flagship Wanderer has led the charge with great action this season. One of our favorite anglers Leah Merryfield helped the Wanderer ring in the New Year with a great day of action on Jan. 1. Capt. William found a 40-plus-pound dorado lurking offshore, and Miss Merryfield was there to land the monster. Mate Johnny had his work cut out for him to filet this big green beast. With dinner on ice, Mike battled a big sailfish all the way in for the release. Filets for the table and another trophy release for the scrapbook… that’s a perfect day of fishing to kick off 2018. On Jan. 9, Soren and Marianne Dalberg-Pedersen had a big day with

Capt. William, highlighted by a pair of awesome marlin releases. They added a big dorado for the icebox, and all of this happened on just a fivehour, half-day trip! Our big battleship Discoverer also has been delivering big fish and big smiles. Our dear friend Jerome McKown continues to add to his FishingNosara Hall of Fame resume with a great day of action for his group on Feb. 1. After a sweet sailfish release, these Texas anglers scored a nice yellowfin tuna with a baitcaster reel he brought from home. Ryan McPherson joined Capt. Carlos and had the best five-hour trip you can imagine on Jan. 31. First up was a big blue marlin release. The blue water kept producing with an excellent sailfish backed up by a tasty yellowfin tuna. Our newest weapon, the 32-foot Eduardono mega-panga Harvester, has already redefined the potential of panga fishing in Central America. After three full days of fishing, angler Chuck Hanford saved the best for last with a mammoth roosterfish release on his final day of action on Feb. 5. This monster was a legitimate 60 pounds, proven by Captain Alex’s Bogagrip. Great work by the mega-panga to photograph and release this monster. Meanwhile, our smaller pangas, the Explorer and Adventurer, are delivering the best bang-for-your-buck fishing action in all of Central America. The Explorer put on a show for Maurycy Krzastek, of Poland, with a wonderful day of action on Jan. 12. The fish were fired-up as the Explorer released not one but two mighty marlins. This amazing feat was backedup with plenty of dorado, so these boys will be well fed. Great work by Capt. Fico! The Adventurer scored a swarm of permit, snappers and yellowfin tuna on Jan. 6. Want to have ceviche, sushi and filets all in one meal? Capt. David is known for delivering a wide variety of edible delights every time he hits the water. Daily updates on the team’s catches are available at blog.fishingnosara.com and on the major social media platforms.

his is the time of year when crappie anglers flock to the water. The predictability and seemingly never-ending abundance of these tasty fish make them a springtime tradition with a community feel. No one’s going to fight you for crappie; there are plenty for everyone. Here are a few tips to help you load a cooler this spring. • Fish The Right Areas: This time of year, crappie are either shallow or thinking about moving shallow, depending on where you fish. With warming waters, the spring spawn will find them right up on the banks in water as shallow as 1 ½ feet. Explore backs of the creeks that feed reservoirs or the flats adjacent to creek channels. Crappie use those channels to travel in and out of their spawning areas, so they’ll be stacked up in shallow brush near those slightly deeper areas when they move up. They’ll be holding in those slightly deeper channels before and after the spawn. • Brush, Brush, Brush: The necessity for cover cannot be overstated. Crappie seek out hard bottoms with abundant cover to hide and

ULTIMATE

protect their beds. Laydowns on the bank, shallow docks, timber and brush stacked up by currents, angler-placed brush in shallow water, all of it will hold spawning crappie as long as there is firm bottom for them to build their nests and something to conceal them. • Tactics: Male crappie are usually the target when fishing during the spawn. Males are the ones that guard the beds, and while they are in protector mode they are aggressive. They are not necessarily feeding; they are attacking. Minnows under a float are the traditional bait for crappie fishing, and it is a tactic that works any time of year. But during the spawn, minnows can actually hurt your productivity because fishing them out of the livewell and hooking them up is time consuming. If they will take a jig, there is no reason not to use one. Jigs are just more efficient. This time of year, bright and gaudy colors are the way to go. Angry fish don’t need to be enticed into feeding, just getting their attention is often enough to make them strike. Whether you’re vertical jigging thick cover or casting to the banks, move quickly until you find crappie and then slow down to catch all of them that will bite. • Remember: When you find a good spot, mark it on the graph or remember where it is. Crappie know where to go to spawn successfully and comfortably. They will utilize the same areas year after year, and so should you. This holds true on a short-term basis also. Catch a limit one day, and you might think you’ve fished a particular bank out. Don’t count on it. Those good spawning sites reload. New fish will move in to take the place of the ones you took home to the fryer. That spot is worth checking again as early as tomorrow or even this afternoon.

TIPS FROM A PRO

FRESHWATER PUNCHING MATS

BRANDON LESTER

T

he first pro event of the 2018 Bassmaster schedule was the Bassmaster Eastern Open in Kissimmee, Fla. I love Florida in winter, and love it even more now. I finished the event in second place, my highest professional finish to date. To notch that result, I had to adapt. Here’s how I did it. In practice and early on day one I was catching fish on a prop bait. The fish were eating it, but I started catching smaller fish as time wore on. I knew big fish were in the area but weren’t willing to hit a topwater. They were buried in the cover, and I needed to go in after them. That meant punching the heavy mats. My arsenal for approaching the thickest Florida cover is simple but vital. I like to

use a MHX FP936 flipping stick with a 1 ½-ounce tungsten weight. I like a 4/0 Mustad 3X Grip Pin Max flipping hook, which helps keep a compact creature bait on the hook shank while penetrating abrasive cover. I pair it with 65-pound Vicious No Fade Braid to a high-speed reel to ensure I can muscle trophy fish from matted cover. A big key to punching heavy cover is the bait. It must have a compact shape to slip through the mats behind that big weight. I worked with X Zone Lures to create a new punching bait that does just that and is a new look for the fish. The Muscle Back Finesse Craw is the result. You can find them on the X Zone website (www.xzonelures.com). I relied on the Okeechobee Craw and Black/Blue Flake colors, which are both Florida staples.

What To Wear?

W

ho says you can’t have it all? When it comes to wetsuits—whether man or woman, warm or cold water, scuba or freediver—there are many great choices on the market. They are more comfortable, better-fitting, and more fashionable than ever. Pioneers in the dive world had to endure cold temperatures sometimes. Finally, in 1952, a University of California physicist invented the wetsuit. Water conducts heat away from the body about 20 times more efficiently than air, which is why an unprotected individual feels cold even in “warmish” water. The inventor created a foam-like material to cover the body, which reduced the water’s ability to conduct heat away from the body. This, plus the fact that water is warmed by your body and trapped inside the suit, made for a more comfortable experience. Previous materials were very fragile or very rigid. Due to product innovation, wetsuits are more flexible, warm, and come in many different colors—even camouflage patterns. Better-fitting designs and new methods of joining the seams make today’s suits even more waterproof and reduce “flushing,” which is the seeping in of cold water. In the warmest parts of the world, divers may opt for a simple “lycra skin” for protection from jellyfish, coral and sunburns. However, even in the summer, most will still wear at least a 2-mil wetsuit. On the other end of the scale, my very admirable friends in northern California wear two-piece 8-mil wetsuits complemented by thick neoprene boots, gloves and hoods. As an example, someone in the Bahamas might wear a skin for the summer and a 2-mil in the winter. Someone in Florida might own a 3-mil for the summer and a two-piece 5-mil for the winter. A Californian would probably own a two-piece 5-mil for the summer and 8-mil for winter.

The rule of thumb is that you want to wear the thinnest possible wetsuit, but enough to feel comfortable throughout the dive. That’s because you want to maintain maximum Photo by Jose Fernandez flexibility and reduce the amount of lead needed on your weight belt to submerge (wetsuit material is buoyant). The beauty of owning two-piece suits (hooded top and farmer john bottoms) is that you can switch pieces around for the perfect combination—such as wearing a 5-mil bottom with a 3-mil top. Along these lines, it’s also possible to buy a sleeveless vest for more layering options. With just a few basic pieces, many different combinations are available. This is especially handy if traveling and exact conditions are unknown or could change. The following brands are available at your local dive shop: Yazbeck, Mares, Riffe, Omer, Cressi and more. If an off-the-rack suit does not fit, there are several affordable custom manufacturers who will tailor one to your measurements, such as Polosub or Elios. These days, there’s no reason to be uncomfortable in the water. Happy diving! Sheri is a world-record holder, host of Speargun Hunter, and producer of “The Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo” in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Follow “Sheri Daye” and “The Blue Wild” on Facebook and Instagram.

The Professional Choice For 200 Years

M

ichael Clark’s 9.66-pound sheepshead might not be the biggest ever caught, but it’s the heaviest officially recognized sheep ever caught on a fly rod in Louisiana. Clark, of Charleston, S.C., and his father-in-law Craig Pagels booked a couple days with Louisiana Low Tide Charters and Capt. Lucas Bissett last January to fish the marshes of Delacroix. The big sheepshead came on the second afternoon of the trip. The day had dawned clear and calm, but when winds picked up in the afternoon it stirred up the mud bottom they were fishing. Capt. Bissett made the call to move in search of a sand bottom and clear water. It was a good call. Bissett spotted two sheepshead from the poling platform. “He told me to strip out all my line and said ‘four o’clock, four o’clock,’” Clark said. “I threw it out there and dropped it right on the shadow. Then I waited for what seemed like forever. Then I twitched it once and it took the fly.” The fish ate Bissett’s own pattern, a Bissett’s Mud Bug, which has a deer hair head and a baitfish profile. It was caught on a 10-weight Orvis Helios. The Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association (LOWA) recognized it as the fly-caught state record. The all-tackle LOWA record for sheepshead was caught in 1982 by Wayne Desselle. That one weighed 21.25 pounds.

pring temperatures can swing widely; the morning can start very cold with late season frontal passages, or strong winds with clouds or fog. Even warm days can feel cold due to the water’s ability to cool the near surface layer of air. However, those cold mornings can warm to hot afternoons and back to cold. First, start with a thermal layer that breathes well that can be worn on its own if it warms up. I prefer merino wool for this, but cotton thermals are fine as well if that’s your budget. The merino seems to wick and dry better and is comfortable in a wider range. Next comes a hoodie of some sort, whether that be heavy cotton, fleece or poly, and on your legs either poly sweats or jeans are usually enough for spring. The hoodie will be a welcome addition over your hat of choice at dawn, during high winds, or evening low-light conditions. The final layer should be some sort of windproof and waterproof layer. For wade fishing or rough water conditions, I like a pair of Simms fishing waders and a jacket. I can’t stress enough how important it is to block the wind and water on the top layer. Spring fishing brings variable conditions that require you to layer your clothes so you can adjust through the day. The mornings may be cold, but the mid afternoon leaves you peeling off clothes and sweating. You’ll be ready if you layer. Tobin created TroutSupport.com - Tech Support for inshore fisherman wanting to take it beyond the basics.
