We’ve all had nights when we just can’t lie down in bed and sleep, whether it’s from heartburn, cardiac problems, hip or back aches – it could be a variety of reasons. Those are the nights we’d give anything for a comfortable chair to sleep in, one that reclines to exactly the right degree, raises feet and legs to precisely the desired level, supports the head and shoulders properly, operates easily even in the dead of night, and sends a hopeful sleeper right off to dreamland.

FISHING BIG WORMS FOR SUMMER BASS BRANDON LESTER

A

s far as baits go for summer fishing, you’ll see a wide variety of techniques come into play. Big crankbaits, jigs, swimbaits, spoons and all sorts of other baits will catch fish as the warm water temperatures of summer arrive. One bait I’ve always had a ton of confidence in this time of year is a big worm. It’s a very versatile bait that just gets bites in the summer months. Big plastic worms have been around a long time, and they’re often overlooked. You can use a big worm with a light bullet-shaped weight and swim it through grass in shallow water or put a heavier weight on and fish it 30 feet deep. It has a big profile that is just the right size for fish looking to make an easy meal after the spawn is done. That shallow grass bite is extremely fun and isn’t all that common these days. X Zone Lures has a new one out called the Blitz worm that’s 11 inches long and is the perfect size for big summertime bass. It has a ribbon-style tail that has great

action and is available in the best colors as well. I throw big worms on an MHX-NEPS90HF 7’6” heavy power rod and 17-lb. Vicious 100% fluorocarbon. That rod is perfect for maintaining the proper contact with the worm on a long cast and getting a good hook in the fish, especially big fish. A key part of my gear setup is the Mustad Big Bite worm hook. It’s a round-bend style and a 4/0 up to 6/0 is my go-to for big worm fishing. In recent years, we’ve been fishing big worms on a heavy shaky head, too. A ¼- to ½-ounce shaky head allows the worm to stand up a little straighter on the bottom. It is a great way to fish them. I always encourage people to try new baits and new techniques, but don’t pass up throwing a big worm this summer. It works – trust me.

ith state control of Gulf of Mexico red snapper seasons, recreational anglers are seeing more access to one of the most popular fisheries on the planet. However, keeping track of when and where you’re allowed to fish is now harder than ever. With 2019 state summer seasons already open and rocking along, here’s a quick run-down of the regulations so you can tell whether or not you’re allowed to make red snapper fishing a part of your summer vacation.

State Seasons Florida: June 11-July 12, with a possible fall season if there is available quota. Alabama: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from June 1-July 28, plus Thursday, July 4. Mississippi: May 24-Sept. 2 (Labor Day), with a mid-season closure from July 8-28. Louisiana: Opened May 25 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until the state’s recreational quota of 743,000 pounds is met. Harvest is also allowed on the Monday of Memorial Day and the Thursday of the Fourth of July. Texas: Open year-round in state waters. State waters extend from the coastline out to the 9-mile mark for Texas and Florida’s Gulf coast. State waters in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana stretch out to three miles from the coast. The daily bag limit is two fish per person with a 16-inch minimum length, except in Texas, where there is a four fish per person daily limit with a 15-inch minimum length requirement. A state-specific license is needed for whichever state waters an angler plans to be in possession of red snapper. Each state is also collecting its own red snapper harvest data. Reporting requirements and self-reporting for each state can be conducted through the following apps. See the state websites for information on how to obtain these apps. Florida: iAngler Guld Red Snapper App Alabama: Snapper Check Mississippi: Tails n’ Scales Louisiana: Recreational Offshore Landing Permit App Texas: iSnapper App Federal Season Federally permitted for-hire vessels have 62 days to fish the Gulf of Mexico in federal waters. The federal season is June 1-Aug. 2.

KING AND SPANISH MACKEREL TOURNAMENT FISHING IN FRANKLIN CO. FLORIDA

By Randy Cnota

I

f you’ve ever competed in a fishing tournament, then you understand how the thrill of the hunt fueled by a competitive drive can create levels of excitement, anticipation, joy and crushing defeat all in the same day… or the same hour, for that matter! When you bring hundreds of people together that share this passion to help find a cure for leukemia, you have what promises to be a great time!

Once you throw in the drag-screaming thrill of a big king mackerel, you’ve found yourself smack in the middle of the C-quarters Marina Kingfish Shootout in Carrabelle, Fla. Anyone capable of making it Carrabelle in August should participate. It’s a great tournament, and anyone has the potential to bring home the gold. In the world of competitive fishing, it’s anybody’s game on any given day. This event has a Spanish mackerel division, giving competitors more chances to win and more species to chase. Obviously, due to their smaller size, the Spanish mackerel won’t burn the bearing out of most reels like a king can, but on light tackle these fish put up as much fight, pound-forpound, as any of them! These toothy critters demand wire leaders and smooth drags. A 40-pound skyrocketing king will cut through mono effortlessly, and if your reel has a sticky drag, forget it; they strike with incredible speed! Live or dead bait will get them to strike, as will a variety of trolled plugs or duster rigs. When trolling, try to target different depths and vary your speed. Some days they want their targets moving fast, and on others, they want it slow or dead still. This is where one of my favorite ways to catch them comes into play. Anchor up or drift with several flat-lines out with an offering of live or dead baits such as cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or even pinfish. Enjoy a cold beverage and a snack, bask in the warm sun and take in the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico. When that peaceful moment is interrupted by the sound of a screaming drag and a bent rod, you’ll be hooked on king mackerel fishing just like me. These fish are incredible fighters, and big ones can peel off a hundred yards of line in mere seconds! C-quarters Marina will host the 16th Annual Kingfish Shootout Aug. 3-4 in Carrabelle, Fla. Inspired by the tragic loss of Lisa Crowder Jackson to leukemia, the volunteers who run this event have, to date, raised $1,000,125 for the Leukemia Research Foundation. Come support this wonderful event and enjoy all that Franklin County has to offer, I promise, you’ll want to come back. For more information on the tournament, go to www.c-quartersmarina.com. BIG YELLOWFINS HERALD SECOND HIGH SEASON IN COSTA RICA By Craig Sutton

T

he second high-season here in northwest Costa Rica is in full effect. Big schools of yellowfin tuna have swept into the Nosara area, and for the next three months we will be chasing them up and down the coast. May, which is a slow month, saw a record 79 trips for FishingNosara. Better still, the calendar for the rest of the summer is full of top-flight anglers. Despite the momentary lull in trips, the crews delivered the goods with multiple marlin releases backed-up with some big yellowfin tuna. Capt. William on the flagship Wanderer led the way this month with 20 trips, edging out Capt. Carlos on the battleship Discoverer by two trips. Right behind them was 2019 Ship of Fools winner, Capt. Alex on the Harvester, aka the People’s Champion, with 17 trips. In mid-May we endured a few rainstorms, but the weather has been mostly nice and perfect for fishing. In early May we welcomed a fun group of Texans for a fierce week of fishing. Merritt and Brian Wruble, Nicole and Bubba Miles, Glenn and Dahni Bloomfield posted this on social media: “We had such an amazing trip! Thank you to the staff, captains and deck hands. You all went above and beyond to make sure we had a great trip with great memories! Thank you, and we can’t wait to start planning our next trip down to Nosara!”

We also welcomed Cameron Frowick’s group of Tyler, Texas-based anglers to the blue water. Capt. William braved the mid-month rains and delivered a wide array of meat fish for these hungry folks. Meredith Frowick wrote this post: “The day was amazing! Went out in the Pacific Ocean and we all caught something. Got three yellowfin tunas and one mahi-mahi. Thank you for the fun time.” May was also a time for reunions; back in 2012 we hosted the Ganoe family, of Jacksonville, Fla., as winners of the initial FishingNosara Family Cup kayak tournament. That family trip made a huge impression because Maegan Ganoe chose Nosara as the spot to get married to her now-husband Jose Morales. No trip to Nosara is complete without a fishing mission, and the newlyweds joined the Harvester on May 17 for an incredible day of action. The headliner was a big Blue Marlin (pictured) that snagged three baits simultaneously. Mate Wilson took command of the cockpit and kept all three anglers on the same page. After the fight we safely released this monster alive and well. “Thank you Alex for putting us on this huge Blue Marlin to celebrate Dad’s birthday and wrap up our wedding week here in Nosara! It took Jose, Daniel and me over 30 minutes to reel it in! Blue Marlin off our bucket list,” wrote Maegan. Call Craig Sutton ASAP at 904-591-2161, so they can fit you into the summer schedule. TIDEWATER / OUTER BANKS

JULY 2019 A personal note from the Editor In 1984, I began my career working for the City of Virginia Beach in the Planning Department located in Bldg. 2/Operations Building along with ComIT, Public Works and Public Utilities. I retired in 2010; however, after recovering from an allogeneic stem-cell transplant I went back to work for the City of Virginia Beach as a temp in a couple different departments. The last department I worked in was Public Utilities, 2nd floor of the Operations Building until October 2018 when I really retired and purchased the Coastal Angler Magazine. For 36 years, the Operations Building was a second home for me as well as for many others. At least it was until Friday, May 31, 2019, when the actions of one employee changed that for me and many of those who currently work or who have worked in Building 2 over the years. Because of that employee’s actions, 12 of my co-workers and long-time friends were killed. Four others are in the hospital with serious injuries, along with a heroic police officer who engaged the suspect. Words cannot describe the roller coaster of emotions I have been on from the moment I received that call that there was an active shooter in my second home and, still today, learning more details and receiving confirmation of those friends and co-works who were injured and still fighting for their lives to be normal again. If you would like to help the victim’s families, the City of Virginia Beach has asked United Way to be their partner on creating a fund for the victims. 100% of the funds raised will go to the victim’s families affected by this senseless tragedy in our community. The website to donate is: https://unitedwayshr.org/ vabeach/ Please note, donations given to victim assistance funds are generally considered personal gifts and are not guaranteed to be tax deductible so you will not be receiving a tax donation receipt. As always, you can check with your tax advisor for further assistance. Thank you in advance for your support. You may also make a donation by check if you’d like to avoid the processing fees charged by the credit card companies when using the form below. The check should be made out to United Way of South Hampton Roads and the memo line should read Virginia Beach Tragedy Fund. Please mail any check donations to: Virginia Beach Tragedy Fund c/o United Way 2515 Walmer Ave Norfolk, VA 23513 When this kind of tragedy happens around the world, I pray for the victims and their families. But I’m finding out that the people who died or who were injured were not the only victims. This horrific event has tainted the lives of so many others forever. Please pray for ALL of the victims and their families to give them the strength to heal from this horrific event. May God bless all of those whose lives have been senselessly shaken and changed forever.

Jake’s Outdoor Adventures By Jake Worthington If you are here vacationing on the Outer Banks and you need to have a day trip away from the ocean, then consider a trip to Wanchese. Just drive to Wanchese and look for the sign that reads Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park. Once in the park, you will be at the hub of the seafood and boat building industry. You will pass by Bayliss Boatworks where some of the finest sportfishing boats are built by legendary fishing Captain John Bayliss. Next is O’Neals Seafood where, if you are here at lunchtime, you can grab an excellent seafood lunch and also buy some fresh North Carolina seafood to take back to cook at your cottage. O’Neals is a popular locals’ spot as well as for those visiting our area. The specials of the day are sure to satisfy your seafood craving and are made with fresh locally caught seafood. When you are done there, then continue around the park and when you make the right turn you will see the Outer Banks Marina “Home of Wicked Tuna Outer Banks.” If you are here in the late afternoon, there are many things to do at the OBX Marina. First you can watch as the boats come in from a day on the ocean and will be unloading their catches on the dock. You can watch as the Doghouse from Wicked Tuna backs in and meet Captain Britton Shackelford. If you like Wicked Tuna, you can head over to the OBX Marina Ship Store and get an official OBX Marina Wicked Tuna T-Shirt. While you are in the Ship Store, you can also check for boat availability and plan a charter fishing trip while you are here visiting. For the adult vacationer, you can visit the Tiki Bar located dockside and grab a cold one and mix with the locals at this popular watering hole. If you pick the right evening the bar also has live music. Located beside the Tiki Hut is the Sooey’s BBQ Food Trailer where you can get some BBQ to compliment your cold beer. For those looking for a family trip, OBX Marina now has Paradise Dolphin Cruises on the Kokomo. If you want to take this Dolphin cruise, then make sure you call ahead and make a reservation because cruises sell out fast during the summer. As you can see, there is a lot happening at the OBX Marina. If you do happen to book a trip with one of the many experienced captains who are located at OBX Marina, the marina also has a fish cleaning service where they will clean and bag your catch of the day to take it back to your cottage to eat or take back home with you. Who knows? While you are visiting, you may even see me when I am returning to OBX Marina after a day on the ocean! This is where I dock my boat “The Sea Donkey.” If you see me, stop by and say hi. Enjoy your stay on the Outer Banks!

July fishing outer banks forecast! Seems the early bite can be good for speckled trout before the sun gets up and cooking. Also seems the Spanish mackerel bite subsides around 8:30 a.m. for the guys trolling. As the sun gets higher it does not mean fishing slows, but just gotta change gears. Looking for big schools of giant red drum cruising the surface in the ocean is super fun! Seems like July 4th week every year is prime week from these big guys showing back up! Tossing a Meathog bucktail jig into the school should get the medium heavy rod bending in no time! There could also be an occasional cobia, dolphin, jack crevalle, or blacktip shark swimming by. Poking around the areas’ many shipwrecks, a fisherman could find large schools of spadefish and amberjack. The spadefish can be super tricky to get to bite but they will bite with bits of jellyfish or clams on light flouro leaders. Ajs (amberjacks) goes vertical jigs, poppers and live bait seem to get these tackle busters hooked up. Look for pompano and sea mullet in the surf on sand fleas and fresh shrimp. Try any one of our local tackle shops! There is a plethora of knowledge and gear to get you hooked up! Captain Aaron Kelly Rock Solid Fishing www.rocksolidfishing.com• 252-441-6575

CATCHIN’ AND COOKIN’

STUFFED CHEESEBURGER

Here is a fun way to kick off the Fourth of July! Fix up your festivities with some double stuffed cheeseburgers. Here is what you do. • Get some 80\20 ground beef and season with Montreal steak seasoning. Mash out with your hands two large patties. • Slice up some good extra sharp cheddar cheese and place on top of one pattie and add a dash of more seasoning and jalapenos if you would like to spice it up a bit. • Now add the other pattie on top of the cheese and bind the edges of both patties together to keep the cheese in. • Next, set your cast iron skillet to medium heat, add a dash of olive oil and place your double stuffed burger in the pan. In about 8 minutes, flip and cook until done. Serve those with all your standard fixins, you just won’t believe how good it is.

ALL SPADES! by Jim Baugh reporting from Oyster Farm at Kings Creek, Cape Charles VA While it is true that I personally enjoy just about any type of fishing we have done in my 57 years of roaming the planet, the truth is I do have a few favorites and one of them is SPADEFISH! Why? Well for a lot of reasons. Pound for pound not sure anything fights as hard. They are a beautiful species of fish, usually plentiful, and are fantastic table fare. So… what is not to love. We were very excited to head out and film a Spade Fishing show with Captain Jake Hiles. He had been on them big time and this was our first opportunity to fish with Captain Jake. We boarded and had a great crew and first mate. We did not have to travel far before our first and only SUPER spot where we proceeded to limit out of fish pretty quick. This was a great example of when you just can’t do anything wrong catching Spades. The bite was on big time and that is the way I like it! The boat was the traditional cut chowder clams rigged on a long leader and just fished close to the boat without any bobbers. The fish just swarmed the boat the entire time we were fishing. Hooks ups were nonstop. Now fishing is not always like this. There are time when you have to really lighten up your tackle and fish with fish finder rigs and make as natural bait presentation as possible. But today, I think you could have thrown a brick overboard with a hook and these fish would have gone for it. My kind of fishing! I love it when the bite is on like this because at least for me, it rarely ever is. On the way in, the Captain decided to look for a Cobia or two to see if we could get a hook up. Sure enough, it was not long before we had a beautiful 44-inch Cobia in the boat. WOW! What a way to wrap up a trip. Now this type of fishing is fun for everyone, especially the family. Great to take kids because usually it is only a half day trip relatively close to shore and it probably will not take long to get hooked up. Captain Jake’s Charter is a good solid boat to take a group on, plenty of room and very stable fishing platform, again, great for a family outing. Contact Captain Jake Hiles at (757) 749-6008. Matador Sportfishing is his charter. Jake is also on YouTube and Facebook. Jake usually post a lot about his current catches so you can always log on and see what is biting. The fishing has been awesome and so are the shrimp at our home base port at the Oyster Farm at Kings Creek in Cape Charles. C-Pier is open with live music and great food every weekend. Call in advance for accommodations or to book your slip, it is the place to be this summer! TIDEWATER AND THE OUTER BANKS TRIM TABS: Do They Help? By John Tiger

As a young marine mechanic, I worked with an old salt who swore that a good hull doesn’t need trim tabs. He was probably right about some hulls, but generally, adding trim tabs can make a good hull perform even better. Tabs give the skipper much more control as well as the ability to create dramatic changes to ride attitude. By definition, trim tabs are flat appendages, typically fashioned from stainless steel or aluminum, that are attached to the bottom edge of a hull’s transom. By moving them up or down together or independently, using electro-mechanical or hydraulic activators controlled at the dashboard, the driver can adjust the hull’s ride attitude to compensate for changing water conditions or irregular load (more weight on one side than the other, or the bow or stern loaded too heavily). They function and operate much the same as ailerons on an airplane wing. WHAT’S AVAILABLE? There are fairly clear choices, very few different types and actuating systems, and installation is not at all difficult. Many hull manufacturers offer them as factory-installed options or even standard equipment; however this is typically only the case on larger and/or more expensive models. It is rare when a boat under 24’ is offered with trim tabs; usually, this is only on specialty rigs such as flats or bass fishing boats. Trim tabs come in many sizes to fit a wide range of hulls. Typically, most models are about a foot wide by a foot long. They’re fashioned from flat plates of stainless steel; high-performance models are typically cast aluminum. Most popular trim tabs are actuated remotely, but models that use water pressure balanced with mechanical pressure to move them are also popular due to their simplicity and lower cost. WHAT’S INVOLVED? Tabs are mounted on the transom parallel to the boat’s bottom, about 3/8 of an inch above the running surface. The actuators are bolted to the transom, and the hydraulic lines (or electrical wires) are run through holes in the transom. All holes are sealed with marine sealer. With hydraulic tabs, the electro-hydraulic pump motor is mounted inside the boat. The control unit is mounted at the dash within easy reach of the operator. With “automatic” tabs, of course, there’s no pump motor, remote control unit or related wiring. The entire installation is done at the transom. ADJUSTMENT AND PERFORMANCE The driver can use the remote adjustment controls to raise or lower the tabs, together or independently. To correct a “list” (leaning to one side), one tab can be lowered while the other is raised. This feature is great when passengers want to sit together on one side of the boat. When the boat is overloaded to the stern, both tabs can be dropped, thereby leveling the fore-aft ride. Conversely, with a heavy load up front, the tabs can be raised to help lift the bow. Adjusting ride attitude to cope with different water conditions is

8 TIDEWATER & THE OUTER BANKS

0719 OBX cam.indd 8

JULY 2019

another key feature; in rough water, the tabs can be lowered to force the bow down so the hull rides flatter with more wetted surface. The increased surface contact smoothes out the ride, although at the expense of fuel economy (more wetted hull surface equals more drag). The tabs can be raised in calm water to help lift the bow and decrease wetted surface, boosting speed and increasing fuel mileage. Trim tabs also help pulling skiers; dropping the tabs down, the driver can lift the stern and lower the bow, causing quicker planing. Planing more quickly and in shorter distance also helps anglers fishing shallows. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS Auto adjusting remote-controlled trim tabs are now available. A computer-controlled electronic unit continually adjusts the tabs based on constant sampling of the boat’s ride attitude and speed using GPS and gyroscopes. They combine the advantages of trim tabs without the guesswork and constant adjusting involved with operator controls. Auto-adjusting tabs that don’t require remote dash controls are also available, and these do a great job of controlling ride attitude for changing water conditions and loads without the complexity and time investment of remote-controlled tabs. These tabs can help correct a myriad of performance issues at very little cost. They use a gas-charged shock to apply downward pressure to the tab plate. At lower speeds, this helps the boat plane more quickly. At higher speeds, water pressure on the underside of the tab pushes the tab up, increasing boat speed. This is a great solution for those who need the performance advantages of adjustable tabs, but don’t want the complexity and potential problems of remote-controlled units. INVESTMENT Expect to pay at least $500 for the most basic set of remote-actuated tabs for a smaller (16’ to 20’) hull. Larger and highperformance versions range from $1000 all the way to $12,000 and even higher for tabs built for yachts and high-end ocean performance hulls. However, self-actuating tabs such as Nauticus’ Smart Tabs sell for as little as $150, and installing them takes less than an hour even for weekend mechanics. Those who prefer to let their marina do the work, add at least a half-day’s labor or more (for installation of remote-actuated units) to the “tab”. GETTING DOWN DEEP By Mike Buss

W

e have explored fishing the surface in both fresh and saltwater in the last few months. This month we will look at getting our flies down deep where the big fish live. I know we can catch big fish on the surface and in shallow water, but to consistently put our flies in front of large fish, we need to get our flies down deep. To get our flies down deeper than 10 feet we need some special fly lines. If I am targeting fish between 10 to 15 feet deep, I usually use a 350-grain fly line. This line has a weighted thirty- foot head that will sink at the rate of about 6 or 7 inches per second and will have to be allowed to sink for a count of 30 seconds to reach the fifteen-foot level. You will also need to modify your casting stroke to effectively cast a heavier line by slowing down and casting a larger loop. If you are in a boat, it also helps to cast your fly in the direction you are moving. This way your line will be sinking as you are floating toward it and as you pass your line continue to let it sink until you have floated past to the point where it straightens out. This will cause your line and fly to begin to rise just like a wounded minnow. This is often when you will get a strike. If not, continue to strip line in short strips and if no luck, make another cast. If you want to get down faster or go deeper, you can use a heavier line. Lines have improved in recent years and you can get as heavy as a 1000-grain line that sinks at the rate of a foot a second. Use of these heavier lines also requires the use of heavier rods to prevent breaking your rod on your cast. Casting these heavy lines requires a modified casting stroke. As I mentioned, you need to really slow your line speed and use a very large loop to get the distance required to give you the time needed to get your line down deep. I have caught fish along the bottom in thirty-five to forty feet water, but I have had to use these special techniques to do so. Fishing deep also requires some different tactics as well. You need to become very familiar with your depth finder to be able to recognize and spot fish on it. I often cruise an area until I see bait balls or fish on my depth finder. I determine their depth and then select a rod and line combo that will get my fly down to them. If I just see bait balls, I often stay in this area because the fish I am after will find this bait sooner or later. It often is simply a matter of a change in the tide to trigger the action. It is also important to watch for birds sitting on the water and be sure to watch for what they are sitting on as displayed on your depth finder. They seem to be able to sense that fish will begin feeding in an area and they just sit and wait for it to happen. I’ve had good luck doing the same thing. Big fish frequent the shallows on occasion and can also be caught on the surface when they are on a blitz, but they spend most of their time down deep. By becoming familiar with what fish and bait balls look like on your depth finder and practicing casting heavy lines with large loops, you too can get in on this action for the big ones!

KAYAK FISHING

By Bryant Franklin

FRIENDS, how important are they. I fish mostly by myself and like the solitude and peacefulness and the time alone to think or just to clear my thoughts, relax. I got the phone call from my buddy Erik Lindstrom. He said, “Grab your yak and lets hit the Eastern Shore for some red drum.” We had tried this last year at this same time with no luck. So again, we got the crew back together to give it another shot. Erik and Jon Baranowski were the early birds and launched early and Jimmy Tran and I showed up around 10 a.m. While we are driving they are texting us pictures of the big citation reds they both were landing in their yaks. We were getting excited which made me drive a little faster. We paddled out to meet our boys and they were jigging some of the shoals along the break. We threw out some blue crabs and paddled around between Smith Island and Fisherman’s Island for the next few hours. We hooked a few rays but again we got skunked. The early bird did get the fish! The crew dismantled around 1 p.m. Jimmy and I hung around for a few more hours but had no luck. I fish a lot alone and it’s hard to get everyone together at the same time with work, kids, and family duties but, when the women let us go and we are able to get the crew together, we do have the most fun. Even though Jimmy and I didn’t catch any fish that day it’s all about the friendship and the valuable time we get to spend out there together FISHING. That is what it is all about

TIDEWATER AND THE OUTER BANKS

Fish Tales & Other Exaggerations By Jolly Roger

I

have opined in previous articles about the value of living by tidal waters. I truly believe that, as a young boy, getting to explore the marshes, backwaters and open water positively affected my future development. At a very early age, I understood the value of these areas and that they were where so much of our food chain had its origin. The times that we had fishing and crabbing as a family, were only eclipsed by the times that we consumed that seafood. Our happy home was small, but functional. We enjoyed having guests and the meals were not only tasty, but usually accompanied by great discussions. It was, of course important to Mom that our guests raved about her latest experiment. While there was a time that they only received blowfish as the main entrée, they continued to join us, but the raving was noticeably reduced. I do think that there was a collective sigh of relief and joy, when she transitioned to Clams Casino and a flounder entrée. Maybe it was just me, but this combination, along with our international side, French Fries, was almost the ultimate dinner. I also loved pizza, but this was a fall back dinner, if Mom was tired. This was a time when the beer and Manhattans flowed freely, though I never saw my parents drunk, they were certainly more talkative. Life was good. We were lucky to have some very good friends, who would come to visit on the weekends. One family had three members, and this was always fun. My friend Bobby and I would always have great adventures and generally remained unhurt. There was another family that we also enjoyed that had four kids. This became a somewhat different logistical issue. Parents always got my bedroom. The kids were gently placed in sleeping bags in the living room floor. This was not an issue, in fact, was generally kind of fun. “Sweet dreams!” Now while this was a nice sentiment, this was a small house and the distance from the kitchen table to the sleeping pods was about ten feet. I do think that the parents attempted to keep the conversation to a moderate level, as the night wore on, they might as well have used a bullhorn. Finally, they had enough, got up, turned off the florescent light and went to bed. I thought that finally I could stay asleep. Not gonna happen! This was when their oldest son, Peter, began snoring. I had always had my own room at our main home and enjoyed quiet, blissful sleep. Suddenly, I was awakened by what

I thought was a thunderstorm, earthquake - explosion. Nope, turns out that Pete had sinus issues. There I was in a sea of sleeping bags, listening to a mixture of chain sawing and agonal breaths. I was in nocturnal hell. Sometime in the night, I drifted off and caught some sleep, but I was still traumatized. Fortunately, it was not so bad that I couldn’t eat a lot for breakfast. I had lived through a warzone and needed to keep up my strength for the day’s expeditions. However, the fun that we had during the day, even when Mother Nature didn’t cooperate, still outweighed the machine noise coming from Peter, et al. So, we lived blissfully in our 2-bedroom cottage, complete with asbestos – containing linoleum tile and pink (Yes, Pink!) asbestos shingles. The Bay was only two homes away and we didn’t get flooded, usually. However, in March of 1963, that all changed. The Nor’easter that hit the island was massive. We were on the bayside and the ocean was 5 homes away, past the road. While there was a large dune system, it did nothing to stop the waves. All five homes on the seaside were wiped out. Our neighbor had completed enclosing their screened porch in September. As the homes from the seaside washed down our lane, one of them hit the neighbor’s house and spun the porch. This created a perfect shield for our home. As a result, we only had a crack in the foundation, that was not serious. One of our neighbors, an elderly couple, fortunately evacuated, prior to the storm hitting. Their house sat out in the Bay, about fifty feet. It was a real curiosity for the kids and adults, alike. The dishes were still in the shelving. The silverware was sill in the drawer. The kitchen table was sitting against the living room wall and the sofa. While there were a few items askew, it looked like someone had picked up the house and dropped it in the Bay. So here I was in the neighbor’s home, with knee deep water and minnows. It was surreal. Once the stuff that could be saved was removed, the house was torched by the local Fire Department. I always wondered what happened to that couple, as they were like grandparents to all of us kids. We were so blessed to still have a home, as others lost everything. I would point out that usually I talk about our marine adventures, but this storm would change our lives and seafood harvesting, forever. So many memories, so little time.

Y

ou know the visual image of fly casting. The line flows back and forth with beautiful loops in a cadence that flows like a willow in a breeze. It is an image that draws people into the sport, and I really enjoy watching it applied correctly. Needless false casting, however, can create all kinds of issues. What is the right amount of false casts? It depends. The short answer to the question is to use the minimum necessary to make the cast work. So, if you can make one back cast and then send the fly to the target, that is the best you could do. But that’s not always easy. A fixed distance cast with a generally short retrieve over and over lends itself to that type cast, as in working a bank with a bass bug every few feet or working a trout run over and over. However, if you are changing distances or changing directions, generally you will need to make a few false casts to pull it off. The general thought process is that three false casts will be enough to cover a change of distance, zeroing in on a target, changing direction or drying a fly. The pick up and back cast starts the series. Slipping line for a change-of-distance cast is done on the false casts. Sizing up the target and loop for the target-shot is done while false casting. Repositioning the rod on the back cast for the change of direction happens when we false cast. The delivery cast should be set up by the pick up and the first false cast. The importance of the false cast can’t be stressed enough, so just picking up the line and waving it in the air without specific thought behind the purpose is not a good idea. The more the line is waving in the air, the more things can go wrong. Giving some thought to the next sequence of casts before you start will really help your casting.

THE LONGEST FISH EVER IN MINNESOTA

T

wo Minneapolis anglers can now claim the longest fish ever caught on record in Minnesota. Darren Troseth and John Kimble pulled a huge, 78-inch-long lake sturgeon through a hole in the ice on the St. Croix River this winter. MDNR recently certified it as a new catch-and-release state record. Estimated to weigh about 120 pounds, the more than 6-foot-long monster is not only the longest lake sturgeon caught on record, it’s the longest fish - period. MDNR’s Shannon Fisher said the fish could be about 100 years old, which is not unusual for this long-lived and slow-growing species. It is, however, unusual for a sturgeon of this size to come from Minnesota waters, where the species had nearly vanished by the early 1900s. For decades, lake sturgeon have been protected in Minnesota and many other states. A rebounding population allowed the Minnesota to open the species for catch-and-release fishing in 2013. The IGFA world record lake sturgeon weighed 168 pounds. It was caught from Ontario, Canada’s Georgian Bay in 1982. A larger fish, which is recognized by Wisconsin as the largest lake sturgeon ever caught in the U.S., was caught out of the state’s Wolf River in 2012. That fish was 87.5 inches long and weighed 240 pounds. It was estimated to be 125 years old.

LAKE ERIE WALLEYE ACTION EXPECTED TO BE OUTSTANDING

B

ased on recent trends, fisheries managers are predicting a record year for walleye anglers on Lake Erie. If you’ve ever wanted to get in on the action, now is the time to go. According to the Ohio DNR, the summer months typically provide the best walleye fishing of the year, and this summer could surpass last summer’s record success for anglers. In 2018, walleye were harvested at the highest rates recorded in nearly 40 years. More than 40 percent of walleye trips produced a limit for anglers. On average, anglers caught and kept a walleye for every 75 minutes of fishing. “Walleye anglers can expect fishing that rivals a boom that began in 2006 and lasted several years following the exceptional 2003 hatch,” said Scott Hale, administrator of fisheries management for the Division of Wildlife. “The recent procession of good hatches points to an outstanding decade that has just begun.” Four excellent walleye hatches between 2014-2018 point to a bright fishing season for Lake Erie, the “Walleye Capital of the World.” The 2019 walleye population is estimated to be 45 million fish ages 2 and older, with a projection exceeding 120 million fish for 2020.

“If you have ever thought about going out fishing on Lake Erie, now is the time,” said Capt. Paul Pacholski, president of the Lake Erie Charter Boat Association. “With the recent walleye hatches we have had the past few years, fishing has been incredible.” Walleye anglers are mostly catching abundant 4- to 5-year-old fish that average 19 to 21 inches and are as large as 26 inches. Anglers should release sub-legal fish with as little handling as possible so they can contribute to the fishery in the future. The daily walleye limit is six fish with a 15-inch minimum length limit. Updated Lake Erie fishing reports are available at wildohio.gov or by calling 888-HOOKFISH (888466-5347). For more information, visit wildohio.gov.

Yamaha Goes Big With Their New 19-foot Center Console When Yamaha Boats entered the center console category in 2015 with their first gen 19-foot 190 FSH, skeptics questioned if Yamaha could compete in the segment in the same way the “Rev Your Heart” brand dominates the 19-foot, 21-foot, and 24-foot bowrider category. Just three years later, Yamaha clapped back by winning Boating Magazine’s coveted Boat of the Year honor with their 21-foot 210 FSH. For 2019, Yamaha upped the ante with a complete refresh of the 190 FSH Series. Yamaha’s 19’ center console boats return with an all-new deck and hull design that is 3 inches longer and 2 inches wider than previous year models. With the added space, Yamaha engineers increased storage capacity and improved overall functionality. From bow to stern, there is not another 19’ center console boat as spacious or more comfortable. Under the waterline, the longer, wider hull is designed for added comfort too, favoring characteristics that reduce bow rise when accelerating and hull packing when operating in choppy water conditions. Another significant improvement included on all Yamaha boats for 2019 is a new V-shaped reverse bucket that enhances handling when in reverse, a redesigned Articulating Keel that reduces drag, and a new compliment of corrosion resistance measures to protect the jet pump and surrounding driveline parts. The new V-Bucket works by diverting water thrust laterally (not down) to take advantage of the benefits of side thrust. The redesigned Articulating Keel is thinner and with tighter tolerances to reduce drag while maintaining all its low-speed handling benefits. And to increase corrosion resistance to the jet pump and surrounding driveline parts, a three-step process that combines Alumite, a ceramic coating, and expoxy paint has been added. Most Usable Deck Layout Ever in a 19’ Center Console Starting at the bow, the storage compartments are larger and open wider than

before. To help keep tackle and other essentials organized, Plano storage trays are integrated into the new portside mini-pod storage compartment, and on the starboard side, the mini pod opens into a huge storage area. These padded mini pods also serve as convenient ingress and egress points. The bow platform is wider than previous models, and the bow platform hatch is wider too, providing better access and more light for stowing or retrieving gear. The bench seat and front of the center console lifts up to reveal an extra deep, large storage area that can also serve as a changing room or head compartment, thanks to the curtain enclosure included on Deluxe and Sport models. The entryway to this compartment is redesigned to make ingress and egress easier. This compartment can also store equipment and recreational items and offers convenient access to the backside of the helm for easy service and installation of aftermarket marine electronics. On the sides of the center console are six vertical rod holders, three on each side. Four additional rod holders are located under the gunnels on the port and starboard sides. With the addition of four flush-mount rod holders on the deck, there are 14 rod holders across the boat. The Sport version adds four more rocket launchers on the T-top. The helm is thoughtfully designed with a simple-to-remove windshield for low profile storage, a stainless steel sports steering wheel, easy access to all boat control switches, a locking glove box and an open area to flush mount electronics such as a fishfinder, GPS unit, and other marine electronics. Also included is Yamaha’s 4.3” touchscreen Connext control system featuring a brand-new user interface in 2019, and conveniently-placed rocker switches for Yamaha’s No Wake Mode and Cruise Assist, along with bilge, horn and other vital functions.

FISH & FISHING

SINKER SENSE

MARK SOSIN

P

resentation holds the key to catching fish. That cardinal rule proves just as valid for critters that hunker down on the sea floor as it does for more glamorous denizens in the upper level of the water column. If a bait isn’t in the zone where the fish happen to be or if it doesn’t behave in a natural and realistic manner, it will be ignored. Sinkers are a vital aspect of fishing success. Their mission goes well beyond the task of simply dragging a bait to the bottom or some midpoint in the water column. View them as part of the total presentation package. That includes such factors as sink rate, whether it anchors a bait or allows it to drift, and as an aid in casting. If you’re going to troll, sinkers help to adjust the depth at which each bait or lure is moving through the water. With very few exceptions, select the lightest sinker that will carry your offering to the bottom or the desired depth. Don’t assume that if 1 ounce does the job, 2 ounces are better. Not only do heavier weights keep the bait or lure from looking like a tempting morsel, they make the hook-up process more difficult. Remember that when an unsuspecting fish inhales an offering, it must drag the sinker along before the hook will embed in its jaw. Line diameter plays a major role in determining the weight of the sinker you will need. Generally, the finer the diameter of the line you are using, the less weight you need to achieve the same results in a given situation. As an example, the bottom bouncer who insists on using 30-pound test line needs a heavier sinker than someone using 20-pound test. Sinker shape helps to determine sink rate. The fastest, freefalling sinkers have the weight concentrated at the bottom, tend to be very compact and are streamlined. It’s important to note, however, that fast-falling sinkers have a tendency to cause the

hook and tag end of the leader to wrap around the standing part during the drop. In most situations, it proves more effective if the sinker will drift across the bottom rather than anchor the rig in one place. If you’re trolling, sinker choice should include enough weight to keep the bait or lure at the preferred depth. No assortment of sinkers is complete without split shots, bullet weights, pinch-ons, and twist-ons. These can be added very easily to make minor adjustments to the weight of the primary sinker. Sinkers come in many different shapes, and each shape has a specific purpose. It’s important to choose a shape designed to do the job you expect. The right sinker for the task at hand will increase your catch rate significantly, and that’s the easiest way to turn an average day on the water into a memorable one.

Reduce Mortality Of Released Bycatch

s responsible anglers, we want to do everything we can to return bycatch safely. Anyone who’s fished bottoms deeper than 30 feet has probably experienced the “floating fish syndrome.” This is caused by barotrauma, an expansion of the fish’s air bladder as they are brought up from depth. Signs of barotrauma include eyes popping, stomach extending out of the mouth, intestines extending out of the anus and bloating. These fish will not be able to descend upon release and are subject to predation. Thanks to a NOAA grant, the South Carolina Wildlife Federation has partnered with the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council to develop an interactive online tutorial detailing fish-handling and release techniques

that give fish the best chance of survival. In 2018, anglers fishing waters of the Atlantic from North Carolina to Florida released more than 2 million red snapper. Even a 5 percent increase in survivorship would save 100,000 red snapper a year. All those surviving fish would remain in the stock. The South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council includes bycatch mortality as part of their population estimates that determine seasons and catch limits. Best fishing practices detailed in the tutorial are a great way of reducing mortality, which means there will be more fish in the water for future fishing opportunities. Take the online tutorial and enhance your future fishing opportunities at: https://safmc. net/bestpracticestutorial/story_ html5.html. Complete the tutorial (about 20 minutes) and sign the pledge to be eligible for a free SeaQualizer descending device of you fish the South Atlantic.

MONSTER BROWN CAUGHT ON WHITE RIVER

Y

ou don’t see a brown trout like this one every day. This massive and battle-scarred bruiser was caught and released by Paden Flippen on Arkansas’ White River below Bull Shoals Dam on June 14. The 36.7-pound monster was a fitting present for the angler, who celebrated his 24th birthday that day. The White River is well known for producing gigantic trout. This system of hatchery-supported tailwaters has the food sources and habitat for rainbow, brown, brook and even cutthroat trout to reach almost unbelievable sizes. Flippin guides for Cotter Trout Dock and said he and other guides had been tracking this big brown for more than a year. If he had decided to keep it for certification, Flippen’s big trout would have fallen just shy of the state record, which is held by a 40-pound, 4-ounce beast that was caught from the Little Red River back in 1992. That fish, caught by Rip Collins, was the world record up until 2013, when an angler in New Zealand caught a 42-pound, 1-ounce brown trout.

FLY FISHING

DEXTER WHITE HANDLE FILLET KNIFE

FLY FISHING

FE

few inches until it can deliver the fly ever so softly. Always carry extra spools of leader material to meet this problem. Once again, your leader length is often determined by the fishing conditions. If the wind is howling and you are having a difficult time rolling over your fly, shorten the leader. If conditions are glass-slick, the fish will be spooky. You will need a much longer cast, so lengthen your leader and reduce the size and weight of your fly.

THE BASIC SALTWATER LEADER: THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT The leader is the connection between fisherman and fish. If tied incorrectly, not only will it be difficult to cast, it will also be responsible for losing saltwater gamefish. I prefer a 9-foot leader when fishing saltwater, although there are occasions when a 10-foot leader is needed. A good leader can turn over the large, heavy flies used in saltwater fly fishing. I will often start my day with a longer leader, and reduce its length depending on the demands of weather conditions and efficiency in properly delivering the fly. The leader is a simple equation: 4x3x2. I have found this the preferred method to construct a solid saltwater leader: • 4 feet of 40-pound stiff mono; • 3 feet of 30-pound mono, and • 2 feet of 20-pound mono. This system works well with lighter tippets as well. If I need to add a lighter tippet, I shorten the heavy 40-pound butt section to keep the overall leader length 9 feet, adding the light tippet to the 20-pound test on the fly end of the leader. How the fly lands on the water is important. You want the fly to land as softly as a whisper. If, however, your leader is too long, a heavy fly will hit the water as loudly as a thrown rock. The noise will alert every fish in the vicinity. I usually solve this problem by shortening the leader and cutting off a

There are times when a shorter leader is needed. The short leader makes it easier to cast a heavy fly into the wind. I will often shorten leaders to fewer than 7 feet when dealing with very strong winds. It’s good to remember that shallow-water fish are less spooky under windy conditions. Therefore, they will often swim within close range of the angler without being spooked. I believe the wind and the distortion it creates on the water’s surface acts as a barrier to the world above the surface, making the fish feel more secure. I’ve witnessed this on many occasions when tarpon, redfish and permit swim within a rod’s length of me while the wind was blowing 20 knots.

he BoJo Fishlight is no ordinary fishlight. The unique design feeds your fish by actually knocking bugs into the water… still alive! The unit has two fluorescent bulbs that attract bugs to the device. Once bugs come to the light, an electric motor with weed-eatertype cord blades knocks the bugs into the water where fish eat them all night long. The Bo-Jo Fishlight works great on fresh or saltwater, on ocean docks, large lakes and equally well—if not better—on small ponds. Basic fishing rules apply

here. Bugs come to the light; bugs get knocked in the water; baitfish feed on bugs; big fish feed on baitfish; you catch the big fish! The device mounts on a post, dock, pier or boat house and is simple to install. These durable dock lights also give you illumination to enjoy nighttime activities and cost less than a nickel a night to operate. This incredible device feeds fish for free and will actually pay for itself in the first year alone. Compare with the cost of expensive mechanical fish feeders that spread pellet feed, and you’ll save big money. Learn more at bo-jofishlight. com or call 478-951-1490. O

n May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted, sending a column of ash and smoke 80,000 feet into the atmosphere. From that chaos, something beautiful emerged—our spectacular Spirit Lake Helenite Ring.

jewelry. “It’s just recently that luxury jewelers have fallen in love with helenite,” says James Fent, GIA Graduate Gemologist. “Clear green color in a stone this size is rarely found in emeralds but helenite has come to the rescue.”

Created from the superheated volcanic rock dust of the historic Mount St. Helens eruption, helenite has become the green stone of choice for jewelry and fashion designers worldwide. Helenite’s vivid color and immaculate clarity rivals mined emeralds that can sell for as much as $3,000 per carat. Today you can wear this 4-carat stunner for only $99!

Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Bring home the Spirit Lake Helenite Ring and see for yourself. If you are not completely blown away by the exceptional beauty of this rare American stone, simply return the ring within 30 days for a full refund of your purchase price. It’s that simple. But we’re betting that once you slide this gorgeous green beauty on your finger, it will take a force of nature to get you two apart!
