ater temperatures are falling. King mackerel are on the move. Wherever they roam, fall is the time to catch kingfish during their annual migration south. In the Atlantic, from the Carolinas south along the Florida coast, kings are following bait to warmer waters. The same thing is going on in the Gulf of Mexico. Kingfish that summered in the northern Gulf are splitting up. Some head west down the Texas coast. Others move east along the Panhandle and down the west coast of Florida. Wherever you fish, the next few months offer the opportunity to connect with the movements of these mercury missiles as they mingle with resident populations. The prospect for drag-burning runs is out there for anglers who pay close attention to water temperatures and stay on the move until they find the fish. King mackerel are as temperature driven as any fish in the sea. When they’re marauding baitfish, they can be found close to shore on the beaches, passes and jetties, where even shore-bound anglers have a shot at them. But most of the larger kingfish hunt over nearshore reefs in 30- to 60-feet or deeper. Deep or shallow, they’ll seek out 68- to 73-degree temperatures where they are comfortable. Watch the water temperature charts, and fish by them. Find the right temperature and an abundance of baitfish, and putting out a spread of baits will tell you quickly if there are kingfish around. Live bait is always the best bet, especially for big smokers. The best bait will depend on where you fish and what baitfish are most prevalent. Pogies (menhaden), hardtails (blue runners), pilchards and threadfin herring are all good baits if they are present. The fall mullet runs offer an abundance of good bait. A lot of tournament and charter boats put a Spanish mackerel in a spread looking for a big bite. Most importantly, baitfish should be fresh. Catch the bait that is available with Sabikis or cast nets, keep it well-oxygenated and switch them frequently. Most kingfish rigs will use a mainline of 20- to 30-pound monofilament. Obviously, with those teeth, a wire leader is essential. You should go as heavy as the fish will let you get away with—depending on water clarity—but it must remain light enough for the bait to swim. A 24-inch, single-strand wire leader of 40-pound test is a starting point. Go lighter in clear water or with smaller baits; go heavier in dirty water or if you’re fishing big baits for big fish. Leaders can be made longer for security. Hooks should be matched to the size of the bait, and it’s wise to add a stinger hook on large baits. Whether anchored, drifting or slow-trolling, a fresh chum slick is a good idea. If a king doesn’t hit within 15 or 20 minutes, pick up and go find some that are biting. They shouldn’t be hard to find this time of year.

By Greg Hatten etails are important when fly fishing for steelhead and running a wood boat through the rocky rivers of the Pacific Northwest. It’s the details I obsess about – the knots, the leaders, the water temperature, the boulders that might hold fish or punch a hole in a wood boat. I am “Obsessed by Details” or OBD. Every piece of gear I carry must pass the OBD test. When I put sunglasses under my microscope, Popticals are my choice. It’s the only brand that provides superior visual performance and a portable design that can be easily packed anywhere to protect the lenses. Eyewear must cut through the glare and provide clarity to see tiny details like the color of insects hatching, the subtle rise of trout, or the faint underwater shadow of a holding steelhead. Popticals offer a level of detail head and shoulders above other glasses. When I row, eyewear must give me clarity to see “the safe line” through rocky sections of river as well as in the distance when I am judging obstacles downriver. Popticals are the sunglasses I trust with my boat on the line. My sunglasses must also provide superior protection from sharp hooks flying through the air. The Popticals I wear have a great side guard that provides outstanding protection. Popticals are the perfect combination of performance and protection with the bonus feature of folding down so small they fit in the palm of my hand. Greg Hatten is a professional fly fishing guide and wood boat builder. Check out Popticals at popticals.com.

t doesn’t get much better than watching the sun peak above the horizon with a rod in hand while schools of redfish crash baitfish all around you. Many areas redfish frequent are in skinny water, and targeting them from a kayak allows access as well as an up close and personal adventure. Kayaks have come a long way since their inception. Thousands of years ago, natives of North America’s arctic built the first kayaks of whale bones and animal skins. They used them for hunting. Today’s plastics and a wave of interest in kayak fishing over
the last decade sparked advancements in kayaks manufactured specifically for fishing. Improvements in space, stability, comfort and maneuverability are just a few of the reasons these vessels are so attractive to anglers. Add to that some of the many options available, such as peddle assist, power poles for anchoring, bait wells and super comfortable seating with lumbar support, and you have a five-star fishing platform that provides access to very skinny water. When fishing from a kayak, lightweight gear is a fun and effective way to target redfish. Light gear offers a challenge when hooked up to 5-plus-pound fish, and it also gives an advantage when casting to distant fish, especially if using braided line. Redfish in skinny water can be caught using jig heads, shrimp under a popping cork, D.O.A. Shrimp and even topwater and suspending baits. This time of year, the mullet really start getting fired up as they start migrating. As redfish actively pursue their prey, casting a topwater plug early in the morning is a really exciting way to draw a strike. Leader material is important in this type of fishing since oyster beds will fray line. Check and replace the leader as needed so the big one never gets away. Kayak fishing has really offered up a unique and exciting way to explore many different types of water. There are many makes and models to suit your fishing style, and taking a kayak out on the water is the best way to see for yourself. Visit a local dealer and get ready to expand your horizons beyond traditional fishing crafts. It’s a different view with exciting promises! verything we do in life carries risks, even going for a drive. Wear your seatbelt, learn to be a defensive driver, and life goes on. Spearfishing has risks too, but they are manageable. A lot of people ask, “What about sharks?” I tell them, “Sharks are like dogs. The vast majority are not a threat. In fact, it’s a privilege to see them in the water. You should enjoy the sight!” Unlike the Jaws movie era, most people now understand that sharks are not mindless monsters. They are beautiful creatures, and there’s many sightseeing opportunities for tourists and photographers. On the other hand, when you are spearfishing, you don’t want to be too cavalier and shoot fish in front of sharks. They are wild animals and should be respected. One should not spear in areas where shark feeding takes place or areas known to be “sharky.” Fortunately, sharks don’t appear out of nowhere and start munching on your leg; that is not their nature. However, it is their nature to be attracted to wounded fish. The vibration attracts them even more than the blood. This is one of several reasons to strive for the killshot on your prey. If you do not achieve that, it is wise to dispatch and place your fish on the boat as quickly as possible. It’s also best to keep moving along. Don’t stay in one spot, especially in the Bahamas. Assuming you’ve done everything possible to avoid an encounter, the next most important step is to dive with a buddy, stay aware, cover each other, and don’t stray too far from the boat. Bad situations tend to escalate gradually. If one diver maintains a watch while the other is dealing with their fish, you are less likely to have a surprise encounter. A good buddy will alert you, call the boat over, and make sure the fish is landed without incident. Sharks tend to make several passes before zeroing in on the target, so there should be plenty of time to land the fish before things escalate. When a shark does show Manny Puig in the water with a big up, it’s important to not show mako shark. Photo by Robin Berg. fear or run away from them. Like dogs, they sense fear and will be more interested if you freak out. Stand your ground, face them, assume an aggressive posture and calmly exit the water. Here’s a summary: 1. When spearing, avoid shark encounters as much as possible. 2. Try to get killshots or dispatch the fish quickly and put it on the boat. Don’t carry a stringer. 3. Move from spot to spot, even if you haven’t seen a shark. 4. Dive as a buddy team and look out for each other after shooting fish. 5. Keep the boat nearby so you can quickly unload fish and/ or exit the water. 6. Do not give up the fish to a shark. That tends to escalate the situation. 7. Do not panic or run from a shark, face them with confidence, but exit when possible. Happy hunting and see you in the water!

Infinity by Harman is about to launch their much-anticipated Kappa Series speaker lineup. The series is a family cosmetic, with a 6 ½”, 8”, and 10” speaker available in either a titanium or white grill. What separates the speaker from other premium speakers is a unique combination of performance, lighting and an unusual “twist” to the 8” speaker. The Kappa 8130 is the new 8” premium white three-way marine speaker from Harman. This speaker boasts 500 watts of peak power (200W RMS) and incorporates two locales for RGB lighting: perimeter ribbon and center mount. Up to seven colors can be attained depending on wiring. The acoustic flexibility of this speaker is perhaps its most inspirational feature. The removable 3 ½” mid tweeter plays perfectly with the science of sound. To recap this science, high frequencies are unidirectional while low frequencies are omnidirectional. Most boat speakers are installed at knee level or lower, so the mid and high frequencies are lost, aimlessly fired at ankles. Harman recognized this deficiency and engineered a removable 3 ½” mid tweeter. Should you choose to remove the mid tweeter, what remains is an 8” subwoofer. Upon removal, the mid tweeter may be installed at an elevated position on the boat, with the helm being a logical choice. The included adaptor and beauty ring assist with the final touches of the mid tweeter installation. The mids and highs fire closer to ear level, resulting in an acoustic experience unlike any other.

hen the Tampa Bay area acquired a major-league baseball team for St. Petersburg in 1995 and before the team began playing in the American League in 1998, owners opened up the naming process to the public. Some of the responses were “Aces,” “Bandits,” “Cannons,” “Stripes,” and “The Nine,” but officials chose The Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Some people objected to the “Devil” part of the name and others surmised that, because the Devil Ray fish likes the bottom of the sea, the team lived down to its name when it languished at the bottom of the rankings. Around 2007, the team owner changed the name from “Devil Rays” to simply “Rays,” emphasizing, not the fish, but the sunshine rays that the area is known for. In fact, for 76 years, the local newspaper, “The Evening Independent,” was given away free on any day that the sun did not shine in St. Petersburg. It happened only 296 times in those 76 years. In 2018, the team announced that, to honor its twentieth year in the big leagues, they would occasionally wear their old uniforms that sported the devil ray image swooping across the front of the uniform and use the name “Tampa Bay Devil Rays.” The fishy devil rays get their name from the appearance of their curled fins, which sometimes point down and look like devil horns sticking out from the fish’s head. The fish have been here a long time: 20 - 25 million years. They’ve also developed the ability to dive to depths of over a mile and stay there for over an hour, as well as to swim faster than 10 miles an hour, making them some of the fastest, deepest divers in the ocean. Despite their menacing name, the fish are actually pretty harmless and shy. They feed on plankton and small fish. The female giant devil ray will actually be pregnant for over two years, at the end of which time she will hatch her eggs inside her body and then give birth to
only one young pup. If you’ve ever seen a devil ray leap high into the air, do twists and even belly flops, you will not soon forget it. They probably do this to communicate with each other, flee from predators, or remove annoying parasites. Devil rays, the fish, not the ballplayers, are on the endangered list and are under threat from boat traffic, pollution, habitat decline and fishing. They are often caught as bycatch or from entanglement in nets, but fishermen seldom target the species. So, if you catch a baseball game with the Rays or see the fish jumping in the ocean, think of the gorgeous fish pictured here. Fishing Report & Forecast Mayport By Capt. Kirk Waltz

his truly is one of my favorite times of the year. The seasons are in full transition and with the first hint of fall and the ever trickle of Northeast breezes the migration of bait is in high gear. This migratory beginning marks the change in feeding habits of many of our local fish and the ones whom only hang around during the warmer months. Look for the bull reds to continue to push into the St. John’s River mouth and up the river to spawn. These huge reds will hang around from now to mid November until our cold fronts chill the water. Look for them in water from 30 to 42 ft on the edges of the channel on the outgoing and incoming tides. A chunk of mullet, ladyfish, or a whole blue crab is very effective for getting these stout fighters to eat a bait. I also like to employ some chumming to draw the fish to the back of the boat. This method only works effectively if the current is moving slowly. Deploying the chum when its screaming will not work well and is a waste as it will scatter to the four winds! These big breeders can scent food from a fairly good distance and has helped me on days when the bite was a little slow. A stout rod like a Penn Regiment medium 7ft with a Spin Fisher V 6500 with 50 lb Ultra- Cast braid has been my preferred weapon. This allows the angler to put good pressure on the fish and get it boat side with some minimal stress on the fish. Too small of a rod and reel only stresses these magnificent fish and can lead to mortality. Be sure to handle them gently and make sure you vent them before releasing them back into the water. This allows the fish to swim back to the bottom. The ICW will hold good numbers of slot reds, trout, some jacks, ladyfish, flounder, and black drum this month. The last two to three hours of the falling tide are best and light tackle is the better choice for rods and reels. Shrimp, mud minnows, and mullet are the preferred baits. Feeder creeks and the flats will equally be productive during this period. Small jigs thrown with Gulp minnows work great as well as slow
sinking Subile lures, Mirror Lures, and Bombers in the early morning. Look for the big rocks at Mayport to get real active with reds, trout, jacks, sheepshead, and black drum this month. Falling tides from high outgoing to the dead low are great times to fish these big stones. I like to use a 1/4oz Wahoo jig coupled with a live shrimp, mud minnow ,finger mullet, or fiddler crab for best results. Look for clear water and not too much current. Both inside and outside the rocks can be incredibly productive so don’t overlook both rock piles. If you are looking for big black drum this month is the time to sink ¼ chunks of blue crab on the bottom for the best results. The very bottom of the dead low is great as well as the first of the outgoing tides. The offshore scene will be very active as bait begins to move south. Kings, cudas, and other striking fish can still be caught with some persistence and perseverance. Slow trolling live baits work well…mullet and pogies should still be on the beach if it doesn’t get too cold for a quick bait fix. The bottom fishing should improve with sea bass, grouper, triggerfish, snapper, and beeliners as cooler waters move in. Be sure to check the regulations for details on what you can keep. Get out and enjoy this time of the year and remember you can’t catch them from the couch. Capt. Kirk Waltz can be reached for charters from 4 to 50ppl by calling 904.626.1128 or 904.241.7560. Get a crash course in bowhunting Archery deer season is starting. So here are tips to get ready before you come to full draw. By Bob McNally

he weather is so summer-hot it’s hard to believe archery deer hunting season is cranking up, but it is. If you’re a bowman, you best get ready – and fast. Hot weather bow deer hunting is different from standard whitetail hunting. Archers must scout for places to ambush deer at ranges less than 50 yards. Thus by its nature, scouting for bowhunting is much different than scouting for firearms deer hunting. Further, because most bowhunting is done earlier in the year than firearms hunting, the places deer are concentrated often are different than when modern guns can be used lawfully. “You got to wear your boots out for bow season, because that’s the best way to pinpoint the hottest spots to ambush a deer early in the
sensor automatically record images of animals passing across the camera lens. Using such cameras allows bowhunters to spy on a potential hunting spot without being in the woods. Such cameras are so sophisticated today that they automatically send images to smart phones and to email addresses. And the service is cheap, too, says Rick, with some plans with up to 1,000 pictures for only a few dollars per month. “Cellular woods cameras are a real godsend for deer hunters because once in position, a bowhunter can learn what kind of animals are walking near a stand without ever going near the place until it’s time to hunt the spot,” Stinson says. “This is a big plus because every time a person walks to a stand site it gets contaminated with human scent;

year,” says veteran bowhunter Rick Stinson, the archery professional at Jacksonville’s Strike Zone outdoor store. “Walk game trails and look for multiple woods sign that deer are present before setting up a tree stand. “Locating deer rubs and scrapes is great. But a place where a couple trails cross nearby is even better. If it’s near food sources like acorns dropping from oaks or persimmon trees, with water and cover nearby, so much the better.” Stinson is a big believer in remote trail cameras that via a motion
and that’s especially so in the early part of the year when it’s so stifling hot.” Friend and veteran archery deer hunter David Blanton of LaGrange, Georgia advises early bowmen to hunt very dense cover if they want a good buck in hot weather. “If you want a chance at a nice buck in early bow season, you’ve got to get into cool thickets,” says Blanton a long-time member of the RealTree Camouflage television hunting team. “Water often is a key

element in locating deer concentrations for early bowhunting. Places where there are creeks, canals, small lakes and beaver ponds offer deer drinking water, which they need in hot weather, as well as cool areas for comfortable daytime bedding. Also, in most places where it’s wet, vegetation is very thick, and these are places deer – especially bucks – favor.” Water also can present deer with natural barriers so they “funnel” through areas ideal for placing tree stands for hot-weather bowhunting. One of the best early-season bow stands Blanton ever hunted was on the edge of a beaver pond. Deer had to walk around the water to filter into a large, nearby oak brush patch. The pond was cool, had lots of thick cover around it, and created a barrier for deer so it funneled all whitetail traffic near a spot where Blanton placed his tree stand. He arrowed a number of good bucks there. Hunting around food sources is a common and very effective way of hunting deer for all sportsmen. But bowhunters in the woods a month or more before firearms hunters must locate early-season foods that deer currently are foraging on. Water oaks, laurel oaks, willow oaks and overcup oaks are among the first trees to drop acorns in the Deep South, and are preferred foods for whitetails living in lowlands. Other prime early-season whitetail foods archers should look for during scouting include: persimmon and apple trees, honeysuckle hedges, honey-locust tree seed pods, and greenbrier plants. Most good deer hunters know whitetails love acorns. But there are many times in early bow season when acorns aren’t ripe and falling. That’s when an archer’s scouting becomes most important. Stillgreen grain and clover fields are often favorite deer feeding places in early season, but usually at night. Yet fields still are good places for a bowman to begin a search for a stand site. By walking field edges hunters can locate trails leading into fields from woodlots. By scouting
trails from fields back into heavy timber, archers may find an ideal location to place an early-season tree stand. Deer often don’t start moving around until late afternoon because it’s so hot during archery season. So frequently abundant deer sign in a field during the early bow season is made at night. That’s why getting far back into woodlots off fields is best for bowhunting. An archer has got to be far enough off a field and near a whitetail bedding area that deer walk passed his stand before it gets too dark for lawful hunting. And don’t forget the trouble with insects during early archery season, especially following abundant rain this summer. Mosquitoes are especially fierce, and repellent is mandatory for bowmen to remain statue-like as a mature deer walks to bow range of less than 30 yards. ThermaCell products are among the best things ever for hunters trying to ward off mosquitoes, gnats and other biting bugs in bow season. Rick Stinson can’t imagine bowhunting in hot weather without a Thermacell unit. Nothing, he says, is more effective at keeping bugs at bay than this simple little portable repellent device. Thermacell units are about twice the size and weight of a smart phone, and are fueled with a small replaceable butane tube. Once ignited, the unit burns a scent pad that gives off invisible, largely scentfree vapors that eliminates bugs. Thermacell also makes “Earth Scent” repellent pads that smell musky and will not alert deer, hogs or other wild game. “Using a Thermacell has enabled me to sit motionless for long hours during hot-weather bowhunting, and that’s enabled me to arrow many deer,” says Stinson.

his month it’s all about the mullet… Our fall mullet run is one of the best times of year to get outdoors and do some fishing. Cooler air temperatures and hungry predatory fish means fun for everyone on the water. The best areas to fish will be easy to find right now… where you see the mullet you’ll also find redfish, trout, flounder, and just about anything else you want to catch. These fish will be lurking just underneath the mullet schools looking for an easy snack. There are countless numbers of lures both hard and soft plastic that do a great job of imitating a mullet. This is a great month to go the top-water plug route and use a Rapala Skitterwalk or Rapala Skitter V. Both are great “walk the dog” type plugs that even the most shy redfish or trout can’t resist this time year. If you want to go subsurface try the soft plastics from Saltwater Assassin like their Elite Shiner paddle tail. It looks just a like a mullet and can be fished weedless or on a traditional jighead. Along with the influx of mullet to Northeast Florida comes our fall flounder run. Some of the best catches both in numbers and in size come in the fall. The fish-finder rig is the go-to for many anglers looking to catch some flounder. It consists of using about 12” or so of leader attached to a swivel with a barrel weight above the swivel. You want to use enough weight to hold the bottom and a hook sized accordingly to the size of mullet or minnow you’re using. Another favorite rig is a Slayer Inc. jighead in either 1/4 or 3/8 oz with a finger mullet pinned to
it. The jighead rig allows you to fish without getting hung up as easily on structure like oysters and rocks. The inlets will come alive this month. Big bull redfish will be schooling up in the deeper areas of St. Augustine Inlet and Mantanzas inlet. A blue crab or mullet on the bottom will get their attention. As long as the it doesn’t get too chilly there will also be some tarpon around the inlets feeding on the bigger mullet schools, so make sure to have a bigger rod ready to go for those monsters. If you missed out on the flood tides last month don’t worry... you still have plenty of days in October to find some tailers. Redfish and sheepshead will still be tailing away looking for crabs, snails, and just about anything that hangs out in the grass. Any small soft plastic paddle tail or shrimp imitation will work well for the reds. I like the Saltwater Assassin Lil Boss rigged on a weedless hook. This will also be a great time to toss an inline spinner bait like the Saltwater Assassin Mac Daddy Spinner. It has all the thump to lure the redfish out of even the thickest grass..

all is finally here and that brings some of the best fishing of the year! Many things to do this month. To start out, this might be the last chance to get a shot at a Tarpon. Often times on an outgoing tide
at the jetties pulling bait on the rips, they can stack up and drifting a live mullet can be the ticket. The big Jacks will also be around exploding on bait. Cast a big topwater like a Rapala skitterwalk, Mirrolure Top dog, or if it is choppy out, use something that will make a good commotion like a High Roller prop bait or a Johnny Rattler. All good choices. Connect that with a adequate piece of 2540 lb test Hi Seas Fluorocarbon leader. Not more than 30 inches if you connect it to braid. Cast around the bait and hold on.....If the fish are there, you are going on a sleigh ride!! Talking lures, topwaters
will also get the attention of the redfish and trout in the intercoastal and river. Working points, creek mouths and over structure can be very productive. Diving plugs, swim baits, and topwaters, all mullet immatating baits will be the best bet. The backcountry reds, trout and flounder will all be active with the southern migration of the mullet and cooler water. Flounder will be very active this month, as in the past, anglers have scored on big doormats in the mayport and adjoining tributaries. A TBS black nickel jig, shrimp tipped bucktail, or fish finder rig on the bottom will be a great choice. Work the jigs slow and wait to feel that exciting “thump” and give the bait a moment and set the hook! Reds will be around many of the backcountries oysters bars and mud flats. Again work the lightest TBS jig and bait combo you can get away with will be what you want to use. Shrimp, mullet or mud minnows are best. Cast to the rips around the bars or sight fish them. Good baits for both situations. Working with bait combos, put a crab, mullet, or chunk of ladyfish on the bottom with a standard fish finder rig along the St.Johns river channel and a bull redfish can be your surprise! Fish to 20-40 lbs are common. All in all, this is usually the last month before the migratory and pelagics head out of our area, so get out and get them, or another year gone bye!! Good Luck.

Fishing Report Pier and Surf By: Noel Kuhn

his is the month! The one month of the year when you can count on catching fish in the surf zone. Whether from the pier or the beach this is the month to get your string stretched! The water temperature is dropping and the mullet run that started in September is still going off. The most important thing to remember this time of the year is matching the hatch. As long as there is mullet in the surf then fish with mullet. All of the predator fish will be on the inside and outside of the first sand bar. It does not matter if you use fresh chunks or frisky live finger mullet. Something will munch your bait. It could be redfish, bluefish, ladyfish, shark, tarpon, trout, flounder, or a lot of other species. A small 3/0 circle hook will get the job done for most fish. I like to use a sinker slider rig with a 15 inch dropper of 30lb mono. For big reds and tarpon I step it up to a 7/0 with 100lb mono. On the top part of the sinker slider I use six feet of 100lb mono. This is very helpful when sliding a big fish up in the wash for a quick picture before releasing. It was a crazy summer for the fact that we caught pompano all
summer long. I guess that not all of them were up for the long trip to the OBX of North Carolina. Now is the time to catch the big ones that do not come back until the water gets cold in the Carolinas. For these tasty hard fighting members of the jack family rigging is simple. A two hook double dropper rig is the best way to go. A 2/0 circle hook will get the job done for a two pound pomp, a five pound black drum, or a twenty pound redfish. All three of those fish plus the tasty whiting will all strike a double dropper rig tipped with fresh bait. Great bait equals great fishing. When you hit the surf zone you should have multiple baits. The go to baits are FKS aka fresh killed shrimp, live sand fleas, live clams, and blue crab knuckles. The live shrimp, soon to be FKS, you’ll buy at the bait store. No water needed just a plastic container to keep them out of the ice. The sand fleas you’ll have to catch at the beach. Your favorite seafood retailer can supply the live clams and blue crabs. Remember with all four of these baits match the hatch in size. A one inch by half inch piece is all that it takes. The fish are munching on fleas and donax clams which both smaller than a quarter. Go now and go often because it doesn’t get any better than Octoberfish! Cheers!

Fishing Report St. Johns River By: Richard Hamilton
F
irst, the Shrimp, if they show up, will be in full swing. We have had way too much rain this year so not sure if we will have a shrimp run. The finny species such as Speckled and Yellow Mouth Trout, Croaker and Redfish among others that love these little crustaceans will be thick in the River. Tarpon will be busting the bait pods and having a grand time. Jacks will be doing likewise and eating everything that they can. Flounder fishing should be good in Doctors Inlet. If you can find some frisky finger mullet you will be money.. Live shrimp is okay also, but medium shiners work very well too. Start checking it out until you locate them. Then just fish like it’s going out of style. The Red will be all over the place. Hit the shallows at low light conditions and the first drops as it brightens up. Fish the bottom and usually moving tides. So plastic, shrimp, crab, and top water lures will produce if you’re so inclined. Now Specks, yes Specks. These beauties start up in the fall and pick up steam as the water cools. Historically, the larger fish start now in the deeper parts of the creeks, followed by around bridge pilings. Baits of choice: road runners, jig heads tipped with a minnow or a minnow on a float right. But
remember, moving water allowing the bait to go by is best. So go and have fun. The Largemouth will be schooling, starting their feedings for the upcoming cool weather. So the bait pods are a good bet. Followed closely by the points and drop-offs and the use of lipless crank baits, Carolina rigs or deeper running crank baits should do a fair job on locating and helping you catch them. Mullet fishing will be going into overdrive with the roe mullet showing up. So grab some bait, rigs, floats, shot, and plastic and chum and go after them. It will be crowded, but you can do it. Croaker fishing and weak fish should be at or near the best. The bigger Croaker should be playing feed me, so bait shrimp or night crawlers are a good bet. Start at marker 18 and head south for the deep drops. And,remember that a nice strip of croaker will probably catch a Red. Catfishing in the creek and out in the River is good. After dark or predawn is best, with the cooler temps and the water starting to go down. Now is a good time. Bream fishing is fair to good. Poppers in the creeks, with a nice glob of worm dipped in the pads, may produce more than you want. But what the heck; try it already. Well, ‘til next time, keep your line wet and your lure movin’.--Richard

fter enjoying weeks of flat calm seas and windless days during our summer months; it’s finally time to say goodbye. The water temperatures will gradually be decreasing and slowly adjusting to the norms for the fall/winter months ahead. The falling sea temperatures trigger the natural instincts of the remarkable and renowned Mullet Run. The migrating mullet travel south along the Atlantic coast to the southern point of Florida, where they head offshore to breed and feed on grasses and algae. So what does this mean? Every type of predator fish will be munching on mullet! As mullet migrate, they stay in large schools, making them irresistible to all predators including most pelagic fish! Immense amounts of mullet can be found throughout the ICW and in the surf, just look for big black masses it the water along the
beach. Early mornings and late evenings are the best times to sneak up on a school of mullet and cast net your share of live bait. TIP: anglers following the schools should cast out a live mullet towards the outside of the school and have your reel in the free line position. You should hook the mullet in the mouth or behind the dorsal fin to create tension and force the mullet to swim away from your boat and towards the school. If you cast the bait in the middle of the school, you have a much lower chance of catching the fish following the schools. Using this method, you will catch snook, tarpon, bluefish, jacks, redfish, barracudas, blacktip and spinner sharks, even kingfish within a couple hundred yards off the surf. The wind will be blowing this month, so it’s time for you to dig through your stowed away fishing gear and pull out the trident, kite rod and fishing kites! Dolphin, kingfish and wahoo can all be landed on the kite this time of the year. Plus, kite fishing brings an element of surprise and you never know which species is going to eat your kite bait next. Keep in mind, mullet is an excellent bait to use while kite fishing! Also an abundant number of wahoo will still be here during throughout the month and you still have a good opportunity to catch one whether you are high-speeding, kite fishing, slow trolling or regular trolling. Good luck out there and get out there when the mullet run is in full swing- it’s a BLAST! Please be sure to check out my YouTube Channel “Darcizzle Offshore” for new fishing videos uploaded every week!

t’s that time of year to practice your cast netting technique as the mullet are running in full force! Net a well full of mullet and head to your local inlet with an assortment of weights to hold bottom (which can change as the tide speeds up or slow down) different size leaders as you never know what you will encounter. When the mullet run is in full swing you can hook everything and anything from redfish to tarpon. Fishing the inlet for redfish is best during change of tides but not always necessarily true as some spectacular days have been had within the last two hours of outgoing tide. A fish finder rig with enough weight to hold bottom, 18 inch leader and 3/0-5/0 Daiichi circle hook is a rig I like to use to catch redfish and flounder. (For flounder change that hook to a j hook instead of a circle for a better hook up). Make sure you have at least 20lb. test line as the current will make a 6 lb. redfish feel more like a 20lber. Once the tide goes slack
start dragging the bottom with your fish finder rig for flounder as this is doormat season. Tarpon can also be seen rolling and crashing bait while fishing the inlet so free line a live mullet with a circle hook and set it in the rod holder. Heading inshore a topwater lure at first light will get blown up around areas that are holding bait. Once the topwater bite slows down you can switch to artificial lures that “match the hatch” which will be mullet so jerk baits, paddle tails and spoon are great lures. If live bait is your thing I would toss two lines out, one live mullet and another rod with cut mullet and see which one the fish like best. Best areas to target are oyster beds during low or high tides or shorelines at high tide that are holding mullet. Night time dock light fishing is still great as trout, lady fish and snook will be popping the bait that drifts by the light all night long. Live shrimp is a local favorite hooked on a 1/0 circle hook and bb split shot. When you run out of shrimp go for the artificial lures like a D.O.A shrimp that will get just as many bites. Snook should be great this month in the southern region of the county. Tomoka Basin is best fished on outgoing tides concentrating on the mosquito controls creek mouths with either live bait or artificial lures. Expect to catch not only snook but redfish, trout and juvenile tarpon as well. October brings us some great fishing so get out there and catch um!.. Capt. Fishing Report & Forecast Fernandina / Amelia Island By Terry D. Lacoss
T
he month of October is an excellent month when targeting a variety of both offshore and inshore game fish species where cooling water temperatures are key. Look for sea trout to be schooling at the little jetty rocks located at the very southern tip of Amelia Island where a good in-coming tide produces the best action. Casting a clear plastic tail with silver flakes pegged on a ¼ 0unce led head jig produces specks up to five-pounds. Be sure and work the plastic and led head lure
combination slowly along the outside edges of the jetty rocks. Flounder fishing is excellent at the northwest portion of Amelia Island where dock pilings and a rocky bottom offers excellent flounder habitat. Fish with a live finger mullet barbed to a ¼-ounce led head jig slowly along the bottom. Be sure and bring along plenty of extra jig heads! Redfish will be tailing during the full moon of October just southwest of the “Ben Shave” Bridge. Here vast marsh flats offer excellent wade fishing for tailing reds. Look for a wagging redfish tail, then cast a as crab pattern fly, or 1/8th ounce led head jig with a live shrimp just ahead of the tailing redfish. Cooling water temperatures will also signal a major shrimp spawn in the fertile marshes where game fish including sea trout, flounder and redfish can be found taking advantage of the abundance of forage foods. Targeting creek mouths during the last of the falling and first of the in-coming tides with a Berkley Gulp shrimp barbed on a ¼ ounce led head jig and worked slowly along the bottom will produce excellent redfish and sea trout action as well. I also like to cast a “Redfish Magic” spinner at these same creek mouths while using a white/chartreuse colored plastic tail. Simply position your fishing boat with an electric motor at the mouth of a falling creek mouth and make casts first to both the left and right points of the creek mouth. Finally cast far back into the creek mouth and work your artificial lure out into the main creek making sure that you keep your rod tip high. Once the lure enters the main creek, slow your retrieve and allow your lure to work the deep edges of the creek mouth. Surf fishing at Amelia Island and Nassau Sound should produce excellent catches of sea trout, whiting, pompano, flounder, bluefish and redfish during the early morning and late evening tides. Bring along a sand flea rake and capture a gallon of sand fleas for a full day of beach fishing. Look for some of the best beach fishing to come during early morning and late evening hours. Offshore fishermen will be targeting gag grouper at FA, HH and FC fish havens while targeting rock ledges. Fish dead on the bottom with live pinfish, mullet, Spanish sardines or menhaden. Black sea bass fishing should also improve with cooling water temperatures while fishing with cut baits, or fresh local squid. Bull reds and a few tarpon will hang around the mouths of the Nassau and St. Mary’s inlets and along the beaches while chum fishing with freshly netted menhaden. The middle of the in-coming tide is key when arriving at mid-morning. The many local brackish tidal rivers are often over looked by local fishermen and have very little fishing pressure. Launching your small fishing boat at the Lofton Creek public boat ramp located on SR-200 puts creek fishermen smack in the middle of excellent Fall freshwater bass fishing. Casting a #11 silver and black floating Rapala close to shoreline cover is key when hooking up to largemouth bass weighing up to ten-pounds. Navigating 1.5 miles down river fishermen will soon find sweet-water where a variety of both freshwater and saltwater game fish are schooling. Fish the first of the falling tide while casting a ¼ ounce led head jig and Berkley Gulp shrimp in the “New Penny” color pattern into the mouths of small feeder creeks and hang on! Sweetwater fishermen can expect to catch a variety of game fish including freshwater bass, stripers, redfish, seatrout and flounder. was recently visiting with family in New York when a discussion about the weather lead to the familiar complaint about Florida’s lack of seasons, I simply had to laugh. September and October bring us to three of our most important season; Hurricane, Football and Fishing. Football season brings out the passion of the South and College and Pro Football fans are as optimistic as ever about their teams starting new seasons. But it’s the new Fishing Season that has the Northeast Florida Marlin Association excited as September and October bring fresh seas and new opportunities to chase our favorite species of billfish and pelagic fish. Sailfish can be caught all year in our region but there should be more opportunities in these next few months to catch sails both inside and outside of the ledge. Trolling natural baits and a wide variety of lures over 22 NE FLORIDA

structure and bait schools should provide strikes. If the Sailfish don’t bite you may find early wahoo or tuna and the opportunities to catch those fish will improve each week of fall. The Marlin Club tournaments continue in the fall including a member only Sailfish tournament and our annual Reel in the Cure tournament for our breast cancer charity in October. Reel in the Cure will have billfish and gamefish entry’s and prizes. The Captains meeting, Friday October 12th, will include raffles, prizes and entertainment. Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Offshore By Capt. Robert Johnson
Fall is in the air? October is an unpredictable month in NE FL. Temperatures are still a little on the warm side, but you can feel fall in the air in the mornings. It is also a great month to fish. The strong cold fronts are
usually still in the future and calm seas are still the norm. On the bottom look for the fall Cobia run to start towards the end of the month. The larger wrecks and ledges in 80 to 100 ft is a great place to start. Use heavy jigs such as a blue and white 6oz Alien jig. When jig fishing on wrecks for cobia, be ready because many times when you hook one and bring to the surface others will follow your hooked fish to the boat. Large schools of Spanish sardines should arrive as well, and the predators will be with them. Bottom fishing for all species will be great as the fish start feeding in preparation for the colder months that are coming. 80-pound monofilament leaders with a live minnow is all you need. In addition to Cobia, Vermilion and Mangrove snapper will be common and joined by a few Gag groupers. On the trolling scene King Mackerel will be plentiful in the 80 to 100 ft range. If we do get a couple of cold fronts look for Sailfish to show in the 150 to 180 ft range. Slow trolled naked ballyhoo on light monofilament leader is the way to go

Why Fishing From A Kayak Beats Fishing From A Boat in shallow water By Terry D. Lacoss
K
ayaks are Stealthy: No matter how you slice it, a kayak is quieter and less noticeable to fish than any boat— even poling skiffs! Not having a trolling motor makes you kayak quieter. Even the pressure of the bow of your boat creating a small ripple will give fish in shallow water a serious case of lockjaw. A kayak can slip into any size pond and the fish won’t even know you’re there. To make your kayak even stealthier, adhere stealth rubber to every spot on your boat that you lay paddles, Plano boxes and rods.
Kayaks offer better casting angles: When fishing from a motorboat, most of your casts are perpendicular to the bank and your lure swims from shallow water to deep. With a kayak you can gain a major advantage by placing your kayak right on the marsh grass. Then you can cast up the grass line and retrieve along the grass. This keeps your lure in the “red zone” for much more time than the typical boat cast. Also throw out into open water and retrieve back to your kayak that’s placed on the shoreline. This swims the lure from deep to shallow, which is the instinctual way that baitfish typically avoid hungry predators. Turning the tables on casting angles make a huge difference in catch rate. Kayaks are comfortable: Today’s modern fishing kayaks have comfortable seats that make you feel like you’re fishing out of an easy chair all day long. Catching fish is more fun in a kayak: Hook into a 24-inch redfish with a kayak underneath you, and you’re off on the Cajun Sleigh Ride. Hook the same redfish in a motorboat and you horse the fish into the boat in less than a minute. Fish just feel bigger when you are catching them out of a kayak. The fish may completely circle your boat during their initial runs, giving you that adrenaline-filled, out-of-control feeling that make fishing so much fun. That man vs. nature feeling is so apparent when you have a big fish throwing mud and water up on you and over you as you struggle to gain the upper hand. Kayaks are more fun when the fish aren’t biting: Everyone has those days when the fish just don’t seem interested. When you are fishing from a kayak, you have the added fun of seeing all the other wildlife abundant in the marsh. You’ll see amazing bird life, otters, raccoons, gators and more. I’ve even seen a black bear swimming a canal and coming up on a mud flat in the marsh. As an added bonus, you get a day of great exercise. Kayaks allow you to fish where other boats cannot get: I have spent countless days fishing in the marsh in my kayak where I don’t see another single boat, kayak or other craft. My home state of Louisiana has so much marsh to fish that’s basically inaccessible to motorized fishing craft. Not only is it accessible, but also your craft is perfect for fishing these waters once you get in there. Kayak anglers are social: Once you have a kayak— you’re in the club. There’s a kindred spirit among the people that forego the common path and take up kayak fishing. You’ll find that you are much more approachable by not only kayak anglers, but also all the folks in motorized craft as well. If you’re into clubs and tournaments, you’ll find a plethora of opportunities to join other kayak anglers for club trips and tournaments year round. Kayak fishing is downright cheap: Take away fuel, insurance, storage, launch fees—not to mention the upfront cost of purchasing a motorboat, and you can see that kayak fishing is a great way to have more fun fishing at a much lower cost. You may not want to sell that motorboat quite yet, though. Consider keeping the boat and using it as a mother ship to carry you and your kayak to areas you can’t paddle to from the launch. Kayak Fishing is a great way to have fishing at a much lower cost By John Williams

L
and-based shark fishing (LBSF) has been enjoyed by anglers along the coastlines of Florida for many decades with limited spotlight, public concern, or ecological evaluation. While events such as deceased large hammerhead and tiger sharks appearing on several beaches in 2017 catalyzed a deeper examination of this type of fishing, greater exposure due to social media and a growing popularity of LBSF has also driven the need for a review by the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC). This summer the FWC established 10 workshops around the state during the months of July and August for discussion and feedback on ideas for proposed policy and guideline implementation for LBSF. These forums were open to the public. I attended the FWC Workshop in Melbourne, Fla. on Aug. 27. I was not surprised that there was a full room, mostly of concerned citizens, including several local mayors as well as a few activists. Notably, the concern was mostly about public safety regarding this type of fishing from citizens, while activists pushed shark welfare. Anglers comprised a vocal 20 or so percent of the room. As Bob Dylan sang, “the times, they are a-changing.” As anglers, we are faced with issues and dilemmas our previous generations did not have. Global fisheries are under attack, while coastal fisheries are under increasing regulation. In Florida, coastal fisheries have shown tremendous progress with recovery of shark populations, as noted by the FWC in the meeting. The fear at hand by anglers is penalizing the LBSF community. These anglers, who pride themselves on a catch and release mentality, range from recreational fishermen to professional land-based charter guides. For some, this type of fishing provides a means for a way of life, while for others it’s a challenging sport unlike any other. A strong debate is embracing the positive, such as using LBSF as an opportunity for data collection and scientific research. For example, NOAA provides free tagging kits for any angler interested in tagging sharks prior to release as well as reporting tags on caught sharks. During the workshop, the FWC presented a number of topics for discussion and feedback, all of which can be found on their website in a downloadable presentation. The highlights included: 1. Special Permits for LBSF – There was overwhelming support of this by all parties (this would include education requirement with limited to no cost for the permit). 2. Restricting time/locations for LBSF – nighttime hours only and/or restrictions from certain public beaches. 3. Expanded Rules for Prohibited Species – prohibiting shorebased tournaments for certain species, restrictions on handling (keep in water), and use of specific gear to maximize survival of released sharks. While the above are merely preliminary recommendations and an outright ban on land-based shark fishing does not appear to be imminent, further data-driven research would lead to true long-term solutions for protecting sharks, supporting anglers, and informing the general public with policies that work for everyone. We shall await the decisions of the commission in December.

oling mangrove edges and flats in search of tailing and belly crawling reds is as much hunting as it is fishing. When the target is sighted and it’s time to take a shot with an 8-weight fly rod, your aim better be on target. Gillz pro staffer Noah Miller, of Melbourne, Fla., has spent the on-the-water hours it takes to consistently take reds on the fly. He’s one of those anglers who knows there are still plenty of fish in the famous inshore waters around Titusville. The Indian River, Banana River and Mosquito Lagoon might be facing water quality challenges, but the fishing remains good. Right now, during the fall mullet run and lasting into February is prime time on Florida’s east coast.
“There’s lots of forage, and the fish are happy,” Miller said of current conditions. “They’re very opportunistic this time of year and will eat almost any fly, as long as it is presented correctly.” The redfish display a lot of schooling activity in preparation for a late fall spawn. These fish are resident to their respective waters and remain there through the seasons, even during the spawn. They can be encountered in large schools of 100 fish or more, and finding them is the key to catching them. “Put in the time on the pushpole,” Miller coached. “These fish do move, but they might only be 200 yards away from where they were yesterday. If things look right and you think there should be fish around, don’t leave an area until you’re certain they’re not there.” If the fish are not visible, it is tough to catch them on a fly. With conventional gear, an angler can make long searching casts to cover water for fish that are not showing themselves. With a fly rod, you’re better off holding the fly on the deck until you spot a fish. Seeing the fish and which way it is headed allows for presentation of the fly. You want it to plop down in front of the fish and close, but not too close. “About 40 feet is the cast I like to make,” said Miller. “You’ll be able to tell if he’s seen it and is interested right away… as soon as the fly hits the water. Then you want to start stripping it away from the fish to make it look like a fleeing crab, shrimp or whatever fly you’re fishing.” Miller caught the redfish on the cover of this month’s editions of Coastal Angler Magazine in stained water with a Seaducer pattern that had purple and black hackle feathers for a tail, a black EP Fiber head and bead chain eyes. That fly worked for the 26-incher on the cover, but this time of year presentation is much more important than fly selection. Noah Miller is a Gillz (gillz-gear.com) pro-staffer and is co-owner of Florida Fly Co., which provides the things fly rodders need to fish Florida’s waters. Check them out on Instagram @FloridaFlyCo and on Facebook.

ontauk, NY. It’s known locally as “The End,” and it’s marketed as “The Fishing Capital of the World!” It can back up both claims. “This is an awesome place for fly- and light-tackle fall thrills says charter skipper Paul Dixon of To the Point Charters (516-314-1185; www.flyfishingmontauk.com). “During October, the inshore action with speedy false albacore, stripers and monster bluefish absolutely sizzles.” Dixon has been fishing Montauk waters for 25 years, loading customers aboard his Contender Tournament 25 and working anywhere from the shadow of Montauk’s iconic lighthouse at the tip of the South Fork to Orient Point at the eastern terminus of Long Island’s North Fork. In the winter months, he charters out of Key Largo to fish the Everglades and Florida Keys. “It’s in the rips and coves at Montauk that the fall mayhem really

comes together,” said Dixon, who loves targeting albies with fly rod in hand. Through September, you’ll find pods of Fat Alberts scattered across Long Island’s East End, but once the rainbait exits the bays, Montauk explodes with fish.” According to Dixon, at the height of the run so many bay anchovies stack up in the rips surrounding Montauk Point that the water actually appears brown with the immense schools. “At that point,” said the skipper, “the albies feed in two ways. They’ll cruise through the densest baitfish schools in tight packs, turning on their sides with their mouths open and simply strain anchovies as they move along. They are tough to hook under those conditions since they aren’t singling out specific targets. Wait a little while though, and they’ll begin to bust up the baitfish schools. That’s when the fishing absolutely breaks loose and every cast has the potential to connect.” While light-tackle fans can hook-up using small tins like a Deadly Dick or a white 1-oz. Panther Martin Big Fin swimbait, Dixon prefers the long wand when sea conditions allow. “These fish hit hard and run fast, so go with the best fly fishing gear you can afford,” he suggested. “I use Cortland Compact floating/intermediate lines, Rise fly rods and Tibor reels. For patterns, 2- to 3-inch Epoxy Minnows get the job done most of the time.” Dixon pointed out that it’s important to know exactly what you are casting for each time you let your line fly. “The albies will be slicing right through the baitfish schools, and it’s important to lead them by several feet,” he said. “The bass, meanwhile, stick close together and plow through the schools like they are mowing a lawn. For these, bring your fly right across the front of the pack. Either way, stay in the bait with each cast. If your offering lands outside of the baitfish school, it’s going to get slammed by a monster blue.” Launch your own boat at Montauk for $25 at Gone Fishing Marina (www.gonefishingmarina78.com). For overnight stays, Montauk Harborside Resort Hotel and Snug Harbor Motel and Marina (www. montauksnugharbor.com) offer suitable accommodations at reasonable prices. Plan your visit with the Montauk Chamber of Commerce (www. montaukchamber.com).

ne of the best parts of summer ending is the beginning of fall fishing and FROGS! I love to fish topwater frogs over grass, and this time of year is prime time. I live about 45 minutes from Lake Guntersville in Alabama, and there’s no place better, or more famous, for frog fishing than Guntersville. In the parking lot this time of year, there’s no telling how many different states you will see license plates from. I’ve fished all over this country and Guntersville definitely doesn’t have a monopoly on the frog bite. It has more matted grass than other TVA lakes, but fisheries up north have loads of grass too. And the bass up north seem to be more eager to bite. I think it’s because they aren’t targeted as heavily as they are down here. If I had the opportunity to take someone out and try to get them fired up about bass fishing, I think fishing a frog over matted vegetation would be my choice. If that person’s heart rate didn’t spike when a big bass blew up through the mat on their frog, then they would be better off doing something else. And then once they’ve seen a blow-up, the excitement level for the next one is all the higher. I get a huge smile on my face every time I see it happen no matter how many thousands of times it has happened. Just watching a fish blow up on a frog is exciting, but you also need to get him in the boat for that all-important photo op or weigh-in stage. For that you must have the right

gear. If you throw a hollow frog like the one in this photo over matted grass and he bites, you probably won’t get him in using monofilament line and a rod and reel from the department store. My setup for frog fishing is a sure-fire winner. Rod: MHX FP885 with Winn split grips and Winn Grip Sleeves | Daiwa reel | 60 lb. Vicious braid | Spro frog. Give it a try this weekend. I know it will work for you.

This foam popper fly won Flymen Fishing Co. the Best of Show— Fly Pattern Freshwater award at the 2017 International Fly Tackle Dealer Show and is now better than ever with a no-epoxy design. This popper is impossible to crack because there is nothing to crack. Hit it with a hammer and it will still be fishable. Fishing guides such as Blane Chocklett report catching dozens and dozens of fish on a single bass bug. The Double Barrel popper body (also available as a fly tying material) is made of durable, soft EVA closed-cell foam, which means it will never get waterlogged and remains lightweight and easy to cast. The Surface Seducer gets its powerful popping action from the deep front cup and extended top lip, which allows for loud pops and strong splashes. If you’re an avid outdoorsman, you need a trailer hitch that can handle any occasion. Trailers, boats, tree stands, campers, ATVs and Kayaks are the toys we take out on every weekend, holiday and family vacation. B&W’s Tow and Stow Adjustable Ball Mount creates a simple way to enjoy all your toys without using multiple hitches. Simply adjust the mount to the desired level, select your ball size, and load up. Whenever you’re not using the hitch, simply reverse the hitch to have it sit under your bumper to avoid a nasty collision with your shin, garage door or another bumper. Every obstacle has been considered, every adventure accounted for. Simply plug and play and forget about all the extra parts and pieces you used to have to search for in your garage. Take advantage of the allin-one adjustable mount to ensure you are prepared for every outing. For the avid angler, this mount will allow you to take your boat down any boat ramp, run your kayak through any wooded trail, and keep your vessel secure no matter the distance. Offshore to inshore, kayak to SUP, B&W Trailer Hitches is the perfect tool for your adventure.
