n early November, 1,500 tons of material were deployed as an artificial reef off Jacksonville. The Starship Reef is the result of a partnership between Shell Oil Company, CCA Florida and CCA’s National Habitat Program, the Building Conservation Trust (BCT). Using Starship, a hyper-aerodynamic, class 8 concept truck that utilizes a variety of fuel-efficient technologies, Shell Lubricants hauled about 40,000 pounds of limestone rock from San Diego to Jacksonville this past June. “Through this road trip, we were able to test the Starship truck along with a number of technologies available today and provide insight into what trucking fleets and owner/operators could consider adopting to help reduce fuel use and emissions as they haul heavy loads,” said Carlos Maurer, president, Shell Lubricants Americas. “We were fortunate that our relationship with Building Conservation Trust and CCA Florida made the perfect load available – reef material – that helped us complete our cross-country drive and create a new oasis for ocean life off the Florida coast: the Starship Reef.” Starship reef will be deployed within the boundaries of the Floyds Folly pre-permitted site at a depth of about 70 feet, just over 20 miles southeast of the mouth of the St. Johns River. There, it will create new marine habitat in a popular angling destination off Jacksonville. This reef will serve as important substrate that will expand habitat for a variety of sea life and provide an easily accessible destination for anglers in search of snapper, gag grouper and black sea bass.

T

he Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is calling on Canada to enact new management measures to reduce the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence striped bass population. “It’s important that Canadian government leaders from across the country understand what’s happening in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and especially on the Miramichi River,” said ASF president Bill Taylor. “DFO has taken incremental steps, but more is needed to restore balance for all species.” Striped bass are native to the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and were once considered threatened. All fisheries were closed by 2000, and a recovery target of 31,200 spawning adults was established. That goal has now been exceeded for eight consecutive years. Recent estimates show between 500,000 and 2-million striped bass spawn annually in the Miramichi. “We have clearly shown this concentration of striped bass is having severe negative effects on wild Atlantic salmon,” said Taylor. Since 2003, ASF and partners like the Miramichi Salmon Association have been tracking juvenile Atlantic salmon, known as smolt, in three Gulf of St. Lawrence rivers. Initially, 65-75 percent of tagged smolt survived migration through the estuary of each river. Survival rates on the Restigouche and Cascapedia rivers have remained stable, but a downward trend began in 2011 on the Miramichi, coinciding with the sharp rise in striped bass. Less than 10 percent of smolt tagged in the Northwest Miramichi River survived to reach the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 2017. The lower Northwest Miramichi is where the entire southern Gulf of St. Lawrence striped bass population gathers to spawn each spring. At the same time, smolt are migrating to the ocean.

It's been an unbelievable year and we would like to say a big "Thank You" to all our customers and dealers for helping make it happen! Let's make 2019 even better!

Fishing Report & Forecast Mayport By Capt. Kirk Waltz

T

his time of the year marks a fairly big change in water temperature for us and brings about some really awesome fishing opportunities. Reds in great numbers will migrate into the local creeks and tributaries to feed on crabs, minnows, and shrimp. The ICW both north and south of the St. John’s River are great spots to fish. Most of these will be 15-17 inches but larger reds will be in the mix. A small jig cast to oyster bars, grass lines, and shell bars will usually garner numerous “rat reds” and are a blast to catch. Pin a shrimp, fiddler crab, or mud minnow on the hook and fish the last 4 hours of the falling tide to low tide. You will also see an increase in trout, sheepshead, and black drum move into the same spots. On high clear tides work the bars and grass edges for trout, reds, and bluefish with a 1/4oz jig tipped with a Gulp Shrimp in the new penny color. White with a chartreuse tail, purple with a chartreuse tail and plain white work well. If the jerk baits don’t work try a Thill Balsa Wood float with a few feet of Berkley Fluorocarbon leader and a small # 2 kahle hook with a live shrimp cast against the grass edges. This is a very effective method on high clear tides. Look for the big rocks to really get active this month with reds, trout (both yellow mouth and speckled), black drum, and sheepshead. Shrimp and fiddlers are typically the better baits though you can bag them on cut blue crab. A Carolina rig works well or a 1/4oz to 3/8oz jig tipped with any of the aforementioned baits. High clear tides are great as well as the bottom of the low outgoing tides. Chumming with oysters is a great method to deploy to really get the sheepshead to fire up! Crush them in a pickle bucket with a hammer and flip handfuls of them behind and next to the boat as you fish. The chum will draw the fish into the boat. Work the slower tides in the river or move to the outside edges if the current runs too hard. Small shrimp and fiddlers really seem to be the most effective baits for sheepshead. Medium weight with a 350 Penn Spinfisher reel and 20lb Berkley Pro Braid. It’s just right for muscling those big fish out of the rocks. The bull reds are still gonna be around though not in the large numbers like we saw at the beginning of last month. Fish the deep channels in the river on the bottom of the low tides with a whole blue crab or a piece of fresh cut mullet.Another effective method is to ease off the beach on flat calm days. Drift for whiting in fairly deep water from 36-42ft. Find the whiting and you will find bull reds. The offshore scene will slow somewhat but the red snapper and sea bass will move into the close in party grounds in big numbers this month. Cut bait like mullet, cigars, or boston mackeral work well as squid and even large live shrimp are great ways to bag some of these. Remember to check the regs for what you can keep. Remember you can’t catch them from the couch!. Capt. Kirk Waltz can be reached at 904.241.7560 or 904.626.1128 for info on charters for 4 or 40ppl. Listen to him every Saturday with Capt. Fishing Report St. Johns River By: Richard Hamilton

L

argemouth Bass should be feeding heavy for the winter cool down. So look for schooling fish in varying areas of the river. Also look at the points and longer sandbars. Lipless crank baits work pretty well. So give it a go. The shrimp run this year has been disappointing to say the least but Cresent lake has been producing some eating size shrimp. Mullet fishing should be in its fading stages. The big roe mullet should be thinking about leaving the area, but can't resist a good snack. So give them a go if you're so inclined. A cane pole with a small piece of worm under a small float works greart. Testing the

waters for specks isn't a bad idea. The bigger they are, the earlier they seem to do their thing. Minnows, road runners, hal-flys and beetle spins work well. The St Johns river from the Buchman bridge south around docks and canals with deeper water is great this time of year. And if you're not good with the river, hit some of the North Florida lakes. Santa Fee and Lockloosa and Orange lakes are also good. They'll usually treat you right. Redfish are still ripping up tackle. They're working area weed lines and the deeper areas off from these areas. Baits include frozen shrimp, night crawlers, top water lures, shallow running crank baits. So if you're so inclined, go for it. Bream are still eating the bottom. Fishing is good and all you need is some worms and the desire to be patient and wait on the bite. Get over some shell bottom points and soak some worms on the bottom. So have fun. Well, I'm short but usable this month. So enjoy. Til next time, Merry Xmas and keep your line wet and your lure movin'. -- Richard.

ith water temperatures cooling down this month, look for the inshore fishing to heat up. For me, the next few months are the most exciting time of year to target reds on the flats and creeks. I’m actually hoping for a cold-ish winter this year, as much as I don’t like freezing my butt off, the cold temps will kill the algae in the water, resulting in gin-clear, sight-fishable awesomeness. It will be time to go to your favorite flat, put on your polarized Costa sunglasses and start looking for fish. The creek fishing will be on fire as well. The redfish will push into the shallowest areas of the creeks on the low tides to warm up and feed on small minnows and shrimp. This time of year you’ll get to sleep in and wait for the sun to be out for a while to warm up the water. Clearer water can mean spookier fish, so downsize your baits/lures for a more stealthy approach. On extreme low tides the redfish, trout and flounder will get schooled up in area creek holes. A live shrimp or mud minnow tossed into the depths can’t be beat. When up on the flats, look for darker mud and oyster-laden bottom to be holding redfish, trout, and flounder. These areas will warm up faster than others on sunny days; a few degrees can really make a difference. Another benefit of dropping water temps is the redfish will start schooling on the flats. If you know where to look you can find huge schools of tightly packed redfish this 6 NE FLORIDA

time of year. Locate these fish from a distance by looking for “muds” (discolored muddy water caused by moving fish) and/or pushing wakes made by moving fish. Redfish singles and doubles can also be found sunning themselves in the shallows, especially along side and on top of oyster bars this time of year. These fish will be lazy so make sure to present your bait in a slow and methodical manner. When I spot a stationary fish I like to cast long of him and at least a few feet to either the left or right of the fish depending on which way he’s facing. Then work the bait slowly back to where the fish is (this will help to not spook the fish). Sometimes they will like it moving a little faster and sometimes a little slower. It’s always fun trying to find the right approach. Trout fishing has been really good this past month and will continue to go strong. The best bite has been close to the inlets in the cleaner water. My favorite trout lure has been the Saltwater Assassin Lil Boss paddle tail in Houdini color paired with a 1/4oz jighead. The tail has a ton of thump and the trout just can’t resist it. The jig, jig, pause method works best for me. Target creek mouths, ICW banks, and any type of structure with moving water and you’ll be sure to find some trout hanging out. Sheepshead fishing should really start to get good this month. Target area bridges, docks, and pilings with fiddler crabs to catch the tasty porgies Be sure to check out my Daily Fishing Reports online @www. InshoreAdventures.net.. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good bite! Capt. Tommy Derringer 904-377-3734 www.InshoreAdventures.net

The Dixie Deer Rut: Timing the deer breeding season in Dixie isn’t nearly as difficult as understanding what’s going on. By Bob McNally

D

eer season is underway throughout Georgia and in most of Florida, and hunters in both states, as well as throughout the South, are geared up for “the rut”. This is the magic time for bucks (and hunters) everywhere when deer breed. Does come into estrus and bucks throw caution to the wind as they chase female deer for a bit of nookie. It’s the time when the biggest bucks are least cautious, and venture from the most tangled thickets and swamps to find the doe deer of their dreams. Most firearms deer seasons are timed for “the rut,” offering hunters the best time to tag a bragging size buck. But the Dixie deer rut is a strange animal event, as difficult to understand as America’s fascination with the Kardashian family. Part of the problem following through on taking a heavy-beam Southern buck in rut is knowing exactly when the breeding season takes place. It’s subject many influences, such as wind and weather, hunting pressure, buck-doe ratios, terrain type and relief, availability and quality of deer food, moon phase, and many more variables even a learned biologist has a tough time keeping tabs on. And while the rut is, at best, a fleeting window of opportunity of finding and shooting bucks throughout whitetail range, in the South it’s even more tilted in dimension. For example, in extreme South Florida, bucks rut in summer – July and August – with fawns born in February and March. Yet in Florida’s Panhandle, west of Tallahassee to Pensacola, bucks are rutting through February (with even a special primitive weapons season capitalizing on the event at that time of year). In nearby Alabama, January is the heralded whitetail rut, a month when seemingly all of North America’s whitetail hunters descend on the Cotton State. While in next-door Middle Georgia, late October and early November is the time when buck necks swell. Who can honestly and authoritatively explain why bucks are pawing the ground and making scrapes on the barrier islands of coastal Georgia in September, while only 200 miles south in Central Florida the rut doesn’t happen until October? Half that distance north, in southeast South Carolina, bucks rut in November. In Mississippi, the rut is rocking in December, while in adjoining Arkansas, November is prime. Central and north Texas bucks rut midto late November, with brush-country bucks in south Texas rutting the last two weeks of December. Years ago Dave Urbston was a deer biologist for the U.S. Forest Service in South Carolina, working on the sprawling Savannah River Plant, just across the state line from Augusta, Georgia. “The deer herd along the Savannah River was not hunted from 1952 to 1965, so the animals were completely unharmed – as wild as deer can be,” says Urbston, who became chief deer biologist for Arkansas. “Those Savannah deer rutted from early October through December, but we recorded fawns being born 12 months of the year – so there was rutting year-round. That’s amazing and a mystery to me in itself. But when we started hunting deer on the plant to control the whitetail population, the buck rut actually started to compact itself. It became a more predictable event, falling more in line with the rest of the state of South Carolina. By 1970, bucks were rutting on the Savannah Plant during the first three weeks of November. “This is completely contrary to what some studies seem to show about bucks. In some places [Georgia, for example] intense hunting pressure can actually delay the rut, simply because does aren’t bred by bucks since so many people are afield. Thus unbred does come back into estrus 28 days later, or even 28 days after that if not bred the second time. 8 NE FLORIDA

CAM_JAX_DEC2018.indd 8

DECEMBER 2018

“But on the Savannah Plant, hunting actually seemed to help better define the time of year when bucks rutted. I have no explanation for it, but it happened.” The southern buck rut can be greatly determined by environmental conditions, according to Steve Coughlin, who served as a wildlife biologist for Florida’s Everglades Region. “Everglades whitetails rut in summer so fawns are born during February and March, which are dry months, and offspring have a better chance to survive,” he explains. “It’s simply survival of the fittest, because if does were bred later in the year, and fawns were born later, not many would live through high-water months of spring in the Glades. “We have studies of this early rutting activity dating back over 40 years, so it’s not something that’s just started in South Florida, or was influenced by deer restocking, hunting pressure or food sources. It’s just how deer have had to adapt to thrive in the region.” Less than 100 years ago deer were rare in the South. The elimination of whitetail disease, increased agriculture, and restocking of deer from out of the area has brought Dixie to deer prominence today. It’s largely believed by many biologists and hunters that mass stocking of Northern whitetails from Virginia, Wisconsin, and other states influenced buck rutting periods in the South, which has resulted in such a hodgepodge of times for swollen whitetail necks throughout the region. Crossbreeding between stocked deer and native animals also has complicated the breeding season, say some savvy scientific deer researchers. And factoring into all these vague ingredients of the southern rut is the so-called “photo period,” which a lot of deer researchers believe is the most important part of all. Basically the “photo period” is a biological hypothesis that says the shorter days of fall and winter (usually less than 12 hours of daylight) gets a doe ready for estrus. The “trigger” that prepares a doe for buck breeding, according to the “photo” theory, is moonlight. The moon is brightest during the second and third full moons following the fall equinox. This jump-starts doe estrus, which brings bucks into full rut. It’s easy to discount the “photo” theory as a lot of mumbo-jumbo, but plenty of learned deer researchers take stock in it. And there are many reasons why hunters should, too. So what’s the bottom line on hunting the rut? Basically, that the Dixie deer rut is vastly different than what happens in the North, and it’s very regionalized. Thus hunters should carefully check with state game biologists, and local area sportsmen before trying to time trips to the rut. Follow your own instincts, too, and put in your “woods time.” Make sure you’re on stand when weather conditions are perfect. When it’s clear, cold and calm, get after ‘em.

Fishing Report & Forecast Nassau Sound By Capt. Tony Bozzella

I

will start out talking about the redfish since this is a great time of year for them. As the water clears up and cools down the micro organisms will die off, less boat traffic, and less rain in Dec will help in keeping the water clear. This makes for great sight fishing. Fish the falling tides and target fishy areas like pinch points in creeks, flats and oyster bar edges These can all be great spots to look. Having ideal weather conditions will help. No wind, sun up higher for visibility and behind you. Move very methodically and quiet, looking, as you see a backing or waking fish, get your presentation out in front in his path. Also you can anchor in these areas and soak bait on a TBS Jig. Mud minnows and shrimp

work well, and also cast with ease. Let the bait sit still for a pickup. Lure fisherman can use a dark or natural colored bucktail, (crab or shrimp imitation) or if in areas of heavy oysters a weedless soft plastic. Work the lure back with the current. Same if you spot fish lead him and cross the fishes path of travel and be subtle!! Another reason for the bucktail, less movement with the action of the hair breathing and undulating creating a very alive look, not to mention, they are the most accurate!! In many of the trips I take, most people have trouble in accurate casting, so it helps to have a lure that does not “helicopter” and spin off coarse .Accuracy is everything. The bucktails hold water which is weight and help to be accurate and land soft with a crustacean like appearance. Also a good time to fish deeper bends and holes in creeks, they can load up on specked trout and yellowmouth trout. Many shorts will be in the mix. Bright colored plastic, bucktails, jig shrimp combos and float rigs all have there place and work well. Plan on a method that you know & will work well where you pick to fish. Sheephead and black drum will hold in these type of areas also. Shrimp & fiddlers will be bait of choice. Winter can be some of the best fishing, don’t miss out!

Fishing Report & Forecast Flagler Inshore By Captain Chris Herrera

I

know some of you have moved to Florida to escape from the cold and snow but being that we are in north Florida we do get a bit of cold. When the temperature drops the water will clear up sparking our sight fishing season. Grab your polarized glasses a casting platform or stepladder and start looking for schooling reds on your favorite flat. Go ahead and sleep in as sight fishing doesn’t get good till late morning, if wind is not a factor, keep the sun to your back and when a school is located approach with stealth. Using a push pole or trolling motor on a low setting will get you within casting distance, when close enough to the school look for the lead fish or pick off the reds

located on the outside of the school. Small soft plastics like Z-man paddlers, small spoons or Sebile stick shad work best for schooling reds. Remember it’s always best to lead your fish by a mile rather hit the fish on the head and spook them. If redfish refuse soft plastics try downsizing or changing lure colors could make the difference. Fly fisherman will bend a rod with any small natural color fly that mimics any small shrimp pattern. A Flats Bunny, olive being one of my favorite colors is my first choice of fly followed by Merkwans. Rat reds, Black Drum and dink Trout to just keepers are still occupying the creek holes and thumping any jig and soft plastic combo. Live shrimp with a bb split shot and Daiichi 1/0 circle hook or a Slayer Inc. Jighead and shrimp combo is the live bait alternative for trout, black drum or reds if artificial is not your thing. Sheep head are another sight fishable species located during first of incoming tides on oyster beds on the flats or around bridge and dock pilings. Best baits are fiddler crabs matched with a Daiichi 1/0 Octopus J hook hands down but shrimp will do in a pinch. During high tides look for Sheepheads in the Palm Coast Canals, most fish will be feeding on the barnacles that are on the seawalls and docks.. Capt. ow what a November! I can only hope the surf temperature stays above 65 degrees a little longer. The Pompano bite has been off the chart for weeks leading up to this month. The trout, drum, bluefish and redfish have also been very plentiful. Fresh dead shrimp has been the bait of choice for all the species. Remember every fish in the surf will eat a shrimp. Only use store bought frozen shrimp as a last resort. If you want to target Pompano, Whiting, Black Drum and Redfish you’ll want to switch to clams. Each of these four species have a special set of skills. They have

crushers in the back of their throat that allow them to swallow clams. The small Donax, aka periwinkle, aka coquina clams are always in our surf. That makes them a staple diet especially when the water temp drops. Since the mullet run is long gone, this month is a good time to switch over to blue crabs for bait. The big Redfish will eagerly swallow a half of a blue crab. This is the best time of the year to cut the crab body into ten pieces making crab knuckles. The biggest Pompano of the year are here and headed south. All of my Pompano over six pounds have been caught on crab knuckles. They have also been caught late in the year when the water is way too cold to swim in. That 68 to 64 degree water is prime conditions. Get out and get them quick before the cold water of January sets it. Tight lines and I’ll see you on the beach! Just look for the flag!

hen winter winds are light and variable, deep sea bottom fishing will produce great fishing action for black sea bass and gag grouper during the month of December. Some of the more productive offshore live bottoms, wrecks and lime rock ledges are located fairly close to shore as well where small boats can access this winter fishery. Included are KBY, FA, FC, FB and Schultz’s Market, all located within 12 nautical miles from either the Nassau or St. Mary’s inlets. Look for some of the best bottom fishing action to come when there are stable

. .

weather conditions with warming water temperatures. Fishing dead on the bottom with fresh squid, cut and deep jigging with a five-ounce bucktail jig in the white color pattern and tipped with a small piece of squid is an excellent winter bottom fishing tactic. Black sea bass are excellent eating and can weigh up to four-pounds. Striking fish including kingfish and wahoo is excellent at Northeast Florida’s “Elton Bottom” where deep water live bottoms hold plenty of bait fish including large blue runners. Be sure and bring along plenty of bait catcher rigs while deep jigging live blue runners, Spanish sardines and cigar minnows while enjoying a holiday kingfish bite. Nassau Sound and St. Mary’s inlet and beach fishermen will be targeting black drum and excellent eating whiting while fishing dead on the bottom. A quarter piece of blue crab works best for black drum while ultra-fresh shrimp is the bait of choice for winter whiting. Tides are critical with the last of the in-coming and the first of the out-going tides producing the best action. Also if a flood tide arrives during the afternoon when water temperatures are warmest, look for the best black drum and whiting fishing action to come. Back country fishermen will find redfish weighing to 10-pounds schooling on warming mud flats during the afternoon as well. Look for large bays that have a mud bottom where crabs and shrimp are plentiful and also key to locating a nice winter redfish bite. Look for the best action to come during a low afternoon tide as well when water temperatures are warmest. Fish slow along the bottom with a ¼ ounce led head rigged with a Berkley Gulp shrimp in the “New Penny” or white with a chartreuse tail color patterns. Winter sea trout action is also excellent, particularly in the deep turns of tidal rivers and the Intra Coastal waterway. Cast a ¼ ounce led head jig rigged with a chartreuse, or white curly plastic tail is key when fished deep and slow for winter specks. Once the tide begins to fall, drift large live shrimp under a trout float in 5-15 feet of water close to boat docks, creek mouths and large oyster laden flats. During high water tides a black and silver mullet pattern count down Rapala worked slowly down the deep edge of intra-coastal ledges is a deadly technique for “Gator” size sea trout. One of the very best big trout drops includes the deep intra-coastal ledges located just north of the historic town of Fernandina Beach. Sheepshead weighing to 10-pounds will be taking fiddler crabs fished close to barnacle clad jetty rocks and dock pilings. There is also an excellent winter sheepshead bite at KBY reef where old concrete rubble is covered with barnacles as well. Trophy size largemouth bass will be fattening up for the coming spawn during late December in the many tidal brackish rivers including Lofton and Boggy creeks. Fishing in the deep turns of the rivers where a shallow shelf is key. Wild shiners fished under a small float is always a sure bet for hooking into winter bass that can weigh up to 12-pounds. There are a multitude of ponds and small lakes located on Amelia Island and neighboring countryside that offer excellent bass fishing during the month of winter as well. Fish the deeper edges while working a ¾ ounce Rattle Trap in the chrome and blue color pattern. Be sure and ask permission first and practice catch and release! How to Have an Awesome Fishing Charter, Every Time By Tommy Derringer

O

K, now before we jump in here, let’s first notice the title of this article is not “How to Catch a Ton of Fish on Every Fishing Charter”. There are several reasons I make this distinction, but long story short, after guiding full time for almost 15 years, I know it’s just not possible to catch A TON of fish every single day. But I also know that whether you catch a ton of fish, just a few fish, or only that one limp sailcat, you can still have an awesome day on the water. Here’s how to make that happen.

quicker than you can say ‘lobster’! Speaking of essentials, sunglasses can have a huge impact on your day. Your guide might be up on the platform directing you where to cast, but if you don’t have on a good pair of polarized sunglasses like those offered from Costa, it will be difficult for you to see the fish and react quickly. Winter temps are on the way which means crystal clear water and the best sight-fishing of the year. There is nothing more exciting than bumping your bait along and watching a fish see it, follow it, and crash! gobble it up. So be sure and pack those polarized glasses. Another way to ensure that you have an awesome day is to listen to your charter captain. You might be thinking, “Well obviously I’m going to listen, that’s why I’m paying for a charter,” but sometimes it’s easier said than done. Experienced anglers might be used to fishing a particular way very successfully in their area, but those techniques or baits might not work well in other regions. Whether or not to set the hook when you have a bite is always tricky too. Captains spend years getting to know the ins and outs of the local waterways and fishery, and no one wants you to catch fish more than they do. Keep in mind that even if it’s a slow day of fishing, there is so much to learn if you ask questions and participate. Also, let your guide know what you are trying to accomplish during your trip. Are you looking to learn how to fish for a specific species or learn how to fish a specific area… maybe you just want to catch a few fish to bring home to eat. I always let my clients know what’s been biting best and what techniques are working

First things first. Prepare for the day appropriately. Check the weather ahead of time and choose your clothes accordingly. In cooler temperatures, be sure to bring or wear more than you think you will need. It always feels colder on the water and you’ll be glad to have that extra layer to bundle up. In summer, sun protection is the name of the game. Choose breathable options that will help you stay cool while also keeping your skin protected from the sun. No matter the weather, a hat and sunscreen (but not the spray kind!... It stains everything!) are two more essentials. Always apply your sunscreen before you get on the boat. That gives it time to soak in, plus you won’t have slippery sunscreen-hands when you’re ready to get to fishing. A raging sunburn will make you forget the great time you had on your charter but sometimes they just want to learn how to walk a top-water plug and sheer catching isn’t their main goal of the charter. Letting your guide know ahead of time what you’d prefer to do can make things more enjoyable for everyone. Lastly, and most importantly, be sure to bring a great attitude and some enthusiasm. Some days you’re going to catch so many fish your muscles will be shaking and your hands will be sore. Other days there will be a lot of hurry up and wait. But as they say, a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work, and that is the truth. So take advantage of those quiet moments and have a look around. Soak up the sunshine, the fresh air and scope out the wildlife that is out there. If we’re lucky enough to be out on the water, we’re lucky enough!

inter is coming and I would expect to see our usual cold fronts. Football playoffs will be in full swing and there will be plenty of smack talking going on. But most importantly it is officially "Wahoo Time". The NEFMA Don Combs Wahoo Round Up kicks off 12/8 and runs through 1/27. Following that will be the world famous NE Florida Wahoo Shootout. The Shootout kicks off the beginning of Febuary and is run by NEFMA Board Member Paul Dozier. For details you can visit http://www.wahooshootout.com/. The first annual Anytime Swordfish Showdown wrapped up at the end of October and you can see the results and highlights on their FB page. Good job Captian Jeff Crabtree on putting on this tournament. Jeff is also a NEFMA Board Member. By the way The Final Approval Fishing team won the NEFMA Swordfish Tournament this year and the Anytime Swordfish Showdown. Good Job !! At NEFMA we are preparing our 2019 Tournament and Events calendar. We expect to continue our quarterly seminar series bringing 22 NE FLORIDA

in speakers on relevant topics around off-shore fishing. The Bluewater Tournament is scheduled for April 25 through April 28. We will also be hosting other tournaments through out the year. Including a Dolphin, Marlin, Swordfish and Sailfish tournaments. Those dates can be found on our website and FB page. Now is the time to renew or join NEFMA. The club has gone through some transition but is poised to really make a come back. Let me take you back to 2001/2002 fishing results. There were 220 Billfish releases logged. 23 of those were Blue Marlin and 34 were Swordfish !!! Of course things are a little different now with fewer big boats and less captains chasing Billfish. This year we will have less than 30 Billfish logged. However competition is competition. We have categories for Wahoo, Dolphin and Tuna. Everyone is competing for several year end awards including Boat of the Year and our Tournament Series Championship. NEFMA provides a place and a way to compete with and get to know other anglers with similar passions. Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Offshore By Capt. Robert Johnson

Last Month – Best Bite! Bad news: This is the last month to catch grouper. Good news: It’s the best bite! So catch a window in between fronts and the grouper rewards will be great! Bottom fish are fattening up for the winter and at present everything except Red Snapper are open to recreational anglers. The near shore wrecks and reefs will hold plenty of Gag grouper and Black sea bass. Fat fall Cobia will be arriving and the time between Thanksgiving and

New Year’s is the peak. I like to jig for Cobia and use 4 to 8 oz. jigs depending on the current. A good method is to drift a spot with a couple of anglers working jigs from the bottom up through the water column. Unlike Amberjack Cobia like a slower presentation and I often tip my jig with a whole squid. There will also be Cobia taken by anglers fishing live baits on the bottom for grouper, a spot or pigfish are my favorite but they will also eat grunts. Live sardines work very well but the Red Snapper bites will be an issue so I stick to the larger baits. Triggerfish, Vermillion snapper, Red porgy, Scamp and Gag grouper will be biting in the offshore depths from 21 to 28 fathoms for anglers who are able to make the longer runs. Remember all grouper species are closed January through the end of April, so now is the time to get after some grouper. On the trolling scene Sailfish, Wahoo and Black fin tuna will be moving through chased by cold fronts and falling water temperatures. I have had double digit days on all three species in past December’s. Depending on the water temperature I normally work the shelf edge. Anything above 72 degrees is good.

F

or much of the U.S. it is time to don winter coats, sweep the chimney and winterize the boat. As the temperature plummets, it’s easy for the mind to wander toward thoughts of warm sun and a beach escape. For the fishing crews in Nosara, Costa Rica, the forecast for the next 10 months is perfect sunshine and clear fishing weather. Best of all, this is the time of year when big dorado provide plenty for the Christmas dinner table. Here in Costa Rica, our fishing pattern resets each year. Ever since the rainy season ended in early November, we have seen large

CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4

schools of dorado stacked up like cordwood. Also, there are swarms of sailfish and the occasional marlin stalking these mahi-mahi meals. We expect this feeding pattern to continue until late-March when the dorado will be replaced by schools of yellowfin tuna moving in from the north. Gangs of spinning dolphins will show us the way to these tasty ahis, and once they show up the tuna bite will strengthen until our end-of-season in early September. Our offshore marlin, yellowfin and dorado all follow schools of bait that move from north to south along the Pacific coast. Conversely, our inshore fishery doesn’t depend on pelagic bait migration patterns. Instead our secluded port of Garza Bay is fed by local mountain rivers. When the cool, nutrient-rich river water collides with the warm, fast-moving saltwater of the Pacific, conditions are perfect for localized swarms of baitfish to form. This “homegrown” bait supports a ravenous population of big roosterfish, broomtail groupers and massive cubera snapper. It’s not unusual for these monsters to weigh upwards of 60 pounds yet still ascend the water column to strike on the surface. Roosterfish are in an especially catchable mood after a cool evening’s rain floods the estuary with fresh baits. Inshore or offshore, all are ripe for the catching, and captains of FishingNosara have posted excellent catches ever since the season started. Right off the bat, angler Brian Stafford, of Jacksonville, Fla. and his fellow firefighters nabbed a big batch of dorado on the 32-foot Wanderer. Catching these big beasts on the first day of the season is a great sign of what we imagine will be a “fishtastic” 2019 season. It’s always a great time be thankful for friends, family and the blessings in life, but with Christmas Day right around the corner, it is the right time to give the gift of fishing. If you have a youngster in the family, get them a tackle box and a starter reel. If you are already an avid angler, remember that Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals are great for expanding your arsenal. And, if you are ready to challenge yourself to catch the baddest fish on the planet, come on down to Nosara and pay us a visit.

urf Expo’s Bluewater category launched last year as an examination of the crossover occurring between fishing brands and the larger market of coastal life. Since then, the show has become a must-attend event for fishing and boating retailers savvy enough to stay ahead of the trends water-loving consumers crave. The world’s largest and longest-running board and watersports show has packed the floor of its Bluewater—offshore, inshore and freshwater fishing—category headed into the Jan. 10-12 show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Popular brands traditionally associated with the waterman and outdoor sporting lifestyle will show off their latest and greatest, giving retailers a hands-on first-look at the products that will drive the industry in 2019. Included in the Bluewater category are top brands like Bluewater sponsor Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Yeti, Otterbox, Fish Hippie, AFTCO, Guy Harvey, Marsh Wear, 5Fin, Salt Life, Bimini Bay, Hooked Soul, Heybo, XTRATUF, Dry Case, Bluewater Gear, Wave Life, Sunday Afternoons and more. Many of fishing’s big hitters will be there along with a huge contingent of brands that appeal to the on-the-water lifestyle. With the crossover evident in today’s marketplace, retailers and outfitters who target only their small niche are missing out on a powerful revenue source. Why sell to just the hardcore boater and angler when you could be unloading cool merchandise on the angler as well as his entire family? “The Bluewater section offers the opportunity for buyers to see the latest in trends for fishing and boating apparel and accessories at a time when retailers can leave their store,” said Kenneth Andres, with Surf Expo. “With our confluence from southern California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this is a trend-setting show.” The economy is churning and consumer spending and confidence levels are higher than they have been for almost 20 years. Surf Expo is a timely opportunity for retailers to preview product for what promises to be a very busy spring season for fishing, boating and watersports retailers. “January is the best time to preview and order new product lines before the season starts,” said Andres. “Retailers can get out of their shops to talk with exhibitors and see and touch the product before they order, plus take advantage of early incentive discounts.” And for the angling marketplace, where there may be a down season but there is no off-season, Surf Expo will feature an array of exhibitors offering at-once product to fill the racks. This is an opportunity to stock the hottest new gear before the competition has even seen it. The show features more than 2,500 booths of apparel and hardgoods and a full line-up of special events, including fashion shows, awards ceremonies, education and demos. Average buyer and exhibitor turnout exceeds 28,600 attendees per show. And it’s a trade-only show, which eliminates the hubbub and massage-chair hawkers of open-to-the-public trade shows. Surf Show is intentionally held during retail down time—the January restocking period for outdoor-sports retailers—so it is a marketplace to get business done in a laid-back atmosphere. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of beautiful people at a surf show,” said Andres. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. If you’ve got a fishing, boating, or watersports shop, come check it out for yourself.” For more information, on January’s Surf Expo in Orlando, go to www. surfexpo.com.

very few years a new technique explodes on the bass fishing scene. Many of these trends just fade away, but some endure and become a part of every bass angler’s arsenal. The technique of the moment is the Ned rig. It is excellent for big numbers of spotted bass and smallmouths. It’ll catch largemouths, too. And it really shines when the fishing gets tough. On post-frontal days in winter, when bass are deep on vertical structure, it’s time to rig up a Ned and go to work. It is the perfect technique when bass are looking for a meal that is small and slow moving. A Ned rig is a miniature soft-plastic stick bait threaded on a light 1/8- to 1/32-ounce mushroom-style jighead. A drop of superglue holding the 3- to 5-inch worm to the jighead works wonders for making this rig durable. When fishing at winter depths, light line should be matched with a light spinning rod with a supple tip. Go as light as you dare, with 4- to 8-pound-test braid finished off with a fluorocarbon leader. When fish are active, a Ned worked steadily along the bottom is deadly. When they are sluggish, it’s better to let the jig sit on the bottom, allowing the bait’s vertical tail to do the work with the slightest shake of the rod tip. It’s not the most exciting way to fish, but it catches fish—sometimes when nothing else will.

hose who have seen his show “Man Fire Food” will recognize Roger Mooking as the iconic host of what has become the ultimate look at extreme outdoor or fire/smoke based cooking. Each week Roger introduces us to passionate and inventive outdoor cooking aficionados and an array of epic custom-built apparatuses designed to cook everything from 200-pound sturgeon to whole cows on a massive homemade spit. Roger’s visits give us insight into the innovative extremes outdoor cooks utilize in their pursuit of perfection. If you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, “Man Fire Food” is a must-watch program. We recently caught up with Roger to discuss the show’s success and rich content. CAM: Roger, your show has become a must-watch series for anyone who mans a grill. Why do you think your show has become so popular? Roger: Over the course of the last 7 seasons, we’ve seen an amazing array of outdoor and flame-inspired cooking devices and techniques featured on the show. If you love outdoor cooking, then you’re probably going to like the show. People just love being outside with loved ones. Backyard barbecues have been a longstanding tradition; in fact, you could say that tradition may even date back to the most primitive use of fire itself. There’s also something very special about slowing down and taking the time it demands to tend a hypnotizing fire and be immersed in the full experience, and getting to eat at the end of that entire adventure. The smells, sounds, sights of nature and breaking the hectic pace that a lot of us live at… it’s needed. CAM: So, you think cooking outdoors is somehow satisfying a primal urge? Roger: When I look back at some of the massive cuts of meat that have been prepared on previous episodes, it does seem like fire and food is primal, and I think we would all have to agree that cooking with wood, coals or heated rocks bridges a gap that is satisfying to those primal instincts.

CAM: What can we expect to see in future episodes? Roger: Humans all over the globe have been cooking with fire for many millennia now, and cultures all over the world have different ways of cooking with fire. I would like to explore extending the borders of the show to feature more places outside of the U.S. CAM: What advice would you offer the average outdoor cook? Roger: Just to enjoy the whole experience. I think the average outdoor cook is a more experienced cook, or else they would be a novice indoor cook. It takes a different level of attention to detail and mindfulness to cook outdoors because you have to deal with many other variables like wind, rain, keeping the fire going, how hot or cool is the fire, what are the hotspots, how much wood/charcoal do I need to add at a particular stage, bugs trying to get you, and all sorts of other things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a modern day North American kitchen with electricity and good shelter. Also, use the smoke as a seasoning advantage. You don’t need to add all kinds of stuff if you start with a freshly caught fish, some salt and a bit of good wood smoke; the work is already done, you just have to make sure you don’t get in the way or don’t burn the darn thing. It’s the magic of simplicity. CAM: How do you select the places that we see on the show? Roger: There is a very dedicated but small team of amazing people who find, research and vet all the potential locations for “Man Fire Food.” The winning candidates have endured hours of interviews and a barrage of questions as exhaustive as possible. The variables are so unimaginable to the viewer, and if we all do our jobs right, you have no idea how much work went into what looks so simple on TV. We’re always interested in looking at unique “Man Fire Food” subject matters. If any of your readers think they qualify, they should email: Contact@rogermooking.com. “Man Fire Food’s” new season premiered Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. on The Cooking Channel.

FISH & FISHING

m

Feeding Strategies MARK SOSIN What appears obvious may be deceiving. Most anglers erroneously believe that when predators corner a hapless school of baitfish, they simply open their mouths and swim through the prey, gorging themselves in the process. It doesn’t happen that way. A predator must isolate and attack one specific victim at a time. That’s not always an easy task. A frantic school of baitfish sensing predators can appear as a shimmering mass of silver with each individual member of the school constantly changing position. Selecting a tasty morsel to ingest can frustrate even the most sophisticated gamefish. That’s one reason why you’ll find predators lurking under a pod of bait. The instant their intended prey strays from the pack, they strike. When you think about it, you can understand that any gamefish searches for a victim that is isolated, disabled or looks different from the others. Feeding is a tradeoff. Success centers on expending as little energy as possible for the food value received. Unsuccessfully chasing prey for long distances keeps a predator lean, hungry, and tends to slow it down. The easiest way to get a strike when you locate a school of baitfish starts with a cast into the middle of the school. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing an artificial lure or a natural bait. The retrieve should work your offering toward the fringes of the school in basically the same direction in which the school is swimming or at a 45-degree angle to the basic direction. As your bait or lure eases toward the edge of the school, it is easier for a predator to isolate. And, it looks slightly different than the baitfish in the school. Some live bait fishermen squeeze a minnow before casting

92

it or drifting it so that it will be disabled. Clipping a fin or two also impairs swimming motion. The injured fish will have trouble swimming, and that means it will send out vibrations that attract the attention of predators. These frantic movements to obtain equilibrium frequently trigger the strike. Even during the anticipated feast of locating a school of baitfish, certain factors come into play. As water temperatures drop, a predator will not pursue its prey as fast and as far as it would in warmer water. When you are fishing a chum slick and fish are feeding on the chum, it is much more effective to fish an offering without retrieving it. A dead drift works just fine. I’ve seen that produce inshore and offshore including tuna and sailfish. I once had an opportunity to watch scientists monitor the behavior of a school of bluefish in a massive aquarium as they attacked a school of minnows. By chance, I focused on a minnow that did not move, even when attacked by a bluefish four times. Each time, the bluefish broke off the attack because the minnow did not behave as it should. On the fifth pass, the minnow moved and it was eaten faster than you can read this sentence. Finally, if you are trolling and see a school of small fish on the surface, approach the school slowly so as not to scare them. Ease alongside the school and work the fringes or establish a position ahead of the baitfish. If you prefer to cast, keep the boat away from the school and make the cast into the school. As you retrieve your offering and it begins to clear the fringes of the school, you should get a strike.
