DESTINATION: El Salto, Mexico FISH: Largemouth Bass PEAK SEASON: September-July THE FISHING: There might be a few lakes out there that produce larger largemouths on occasion, but none are as consistent as Lake El Salto at producing huge catches of quality sized bass with the ever-present potential to catch a true giant. For more than 30 years, El Salto has been one of the world’s best bass fisheries, and it remains right at the top of the bucket list for travelling bass anglers. It is a place where 100-fish days are normal, the average fish weighs 4 to 5 pounds, and 7- to 10-pound fish are a regular occurrence. The best day on El Salto? Well, the lake record bass weighed 18 pounds, 6 ounces. The record for most bass caught in a day stands at 607 fish. El Salto is a 25,000-acre impoundment of the Elota River. It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. A yearround growing season and the introduction of Florida strain largemouth bass in the 1980s helped build this big-bass factory. Abundant tilapia as a forage species as well as varied habitat and lots of sunken timber maintain it. If all this doesn’t pique your interest, it’s worth mentioning that many of the biggest fish caught each year from El Salto are victims of topwater tactics. INFORMATION: www.anglersinn.com

Mongolia

DESTINATION: Khentii Aimag and Khovsgol Aimag, Mongolia FISH: Siberian Taimen PEAK SEASON: June 15-October THE FISHING: Imagine fly fishing a river for trout that can weigh 20 pounds

or more. Now imagine these giant trout surface feed on ducks and rodents instead of insects. Sounds like a fairytale, right? Well it’s not. Fish like this actually exist, but the behaviors of Mongolia’s Siberian taimen are more aptly described as the stuff of nightmares than fairytales. The taimen is the largest, most ferocious salmonid in the world. Tactics for catching them include chugging giant topwater poppers on 9-weight fly rods, and the violence exhibited on a taimen’s take can only be matched by the ensuing fight. Anglers can expect to tangle with good numbers of taimen in the 6- to 15-pound range on a week-long camp-and-float through gorgeous Mongolian canyons. A trophy longer than 40 inches and weighing 25 pounds or more is a definite possibility. But the fishing is only part of what makes a Mongolia so special. The warmth of Mongolian hospitality, the skill of its guides and the beauty of its scenery make for an unforgettable expedition. Taimen fisheries in Mongolia are catch-and-release, fly fishing only with a single barbless hook.

DESTINATION: San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador FISH: Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna PEAK SEASON: January-April THE FISHING: Everyone has heard of the tortoises, diving iguanas and other strange wildlife that made the Galapagos Islands famous. The incredible bluewater fishing is not as well publicized. Deep sea currents carry warm waters and plentiful baitfish past this underwater mountain range about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Blue, black and striped marlin congregate to feed around banks that rise to 300 and 600 feet from more than 2,000 feet of water. It’s some of the best fishing in the Pacific, and it’s only about an hour’s run from the docks at San Cristobal. The striped marlin bite might be the best in the world, with fast action for fish that average 200 pounds and get up into the 350-pound range. Blacks and blues are less frequently encountered than striped marlin, but they are plentiful and big. Fish from 500 to 800 pounds are the norm. Topwater popper fishing for yellowfin tuna is off the chain for fish up to 150 pounds. Big dorado, African pompano and Almaco jacks are bonus fish. And the wahoo fishing is good, as well. Florida Keys

DESTINATION: Florida Keys, U.S.A. FISH: Tarpon PEAK SEASON: April-June THE FISHING: Although the Florida Keys aren’t as remote as many of the marquee fishing destinations this planet offers, the fishing is second to none. On the southern edge of the continent, where the Gulf Stream carries fecund waters from the Gulf of Mexico through the Florida Straits to the Atlantic, this chain of islands is perfectly situated to create one of the most productive marine environments in the world. Big-game sportfishing and backcountry fly fishing arose from the outstanding and diverse fisheries of The Keys. Year-round, there is excellent fishing inshore, nearshore and offshore. One of the most iconic of these fisheries is for big flats tarpon. There are always tarpon present in the Florida Keys, and nowhere else in the world do they run so thick through clear, shallow waters during their migrations. In ultra-clear water, sight fishing for these beasts from a flats skiff has to be the ultimate shallow-water experience. The size and raw power of tarpon are unmatched among flats species. The aerial displays of fish heavier than 100 pounds are part of what makes fishing in The Keys legendary. INFORMATION: fla-keys.com

Franklin County, Florida DESTINATION: Franklin County, Fla. FISH: Tarpon, Redfish, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Jack Crevalle, Amberjack, Gag Grouper, Pompano PEAK SEASON: June-December THE FISHING: Take a step back in time to experience Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Every cast could produce something different in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Last month, Hurricane Michael lashed out on this beautiful slice of the Panhandle, but the fisheries should bounce back as strong as ever. You’ll find offshore species like wahoo, grouper and sailfish, as well as inshore species like pompano, redfish, tarpon, jack crevalle and speckled trout. In early spring, look for cobia and Spanish mackerel nearshore, while inshore you’ll find trout and redfish crushing topwaters. In summer, the king mackerel bite can be non-stop and tarpon are big and plentiful. Several species of snapper and grouper are always on the menu while offshore, blackfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and more can be had. As we get into fall, big jacks will be tearing up tackle and the delicious flounder will be found as they spawn. False albacore or bonito can warm up a cool day in the blue water, also. From the mouth of the Apalachicola River to Carrabelle, you’ll find some of the hottest action anywhere! Redfish, trout and flounder abound, and you can cast for freshwater species like bass and stripers the same day. INFORMATION: www.floridasforgottencoast.com

DESTINATION: Kona Coast, Big Island, Hawaii FISH: Pacific Blue Marlin PEAK SEASON: April-September THE FISHING: If a giant marlin is on your bucket list, there may be no better place in the world to check it off than on the Kona Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. On the southeastern end of a 1,500-mile archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, massive shield volcanoes protect the leeward side of the Big Island from wind and rain, resulting in nearly perpetual calm seas off the Kona Coast. Three miles from land, the bottom drops into 6,000-foot depths while winds and topography create miles-wide cyclonic eddies that funnel nutrient-rich water up into the warm surface layers. These localized patches of biologically productive water attract big pelagics. Within sight of land, there is the opportunity to catch six species of billfish, six species of tuna, ono (wahoo) and mahi-mahi, among others. The main drawing card is blue marlin… big ones. Kona lays claim to more than 80 blues heavier than 1,000 pounds over the years, and that doesn’t include all the granders that were released. More than half of all the granders ever recorded from the Hawaiian Islands were caught off the Kona Coast. INFORMATION: www.gohawaii.com

DESTINATION: Kamchatka, Russia FISH: Rainbow Trout PEAK SEASON: July-September THE FISHING: Some scientists believe the Kamchatka Peninsula is where rainbow trout originated in a web of cold-water rivers on Russia’s eastern coast. With very few roads and little human population to speak of, this roughly 100,000-square-mile slice of land across the Bering Sea from Alaska is as remote as it gets. In fact, the only feasible way to access its hundreds of miles of trout water is by helicopter. Kamchatka is a place that makes even the Alaskan tundra seem overpopulated with humans. It offers a wilderness experience unlike any other, and the fishing isn’t too shabby, either. Trout that eat dry flies, streamers and deer-hair mice skated across the surface average 20 to 22 inches. Each short season, anglers catch 30-inchers that are aggressive and as hot as they come. And while the rainbows are the headliners, there are also several species of Pacific salmon that make annual runs into the peninsula. Huge kundzha, a close relative of Dolly Varden, weigh into the teens. And trophy grayling round out a diverse fishery that’s one of the most unspoiled on the planet. INFORMATION: www.thebestofkamchatka.com

DESTINATION: Santee Cooper Lakes, South Carolina FISH: Striped Bass, Catfish, Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Shellcracker PEAK SEASON: Year-round THE FISHING: For a world-class freshwater fishery, the Santee Cooper lakes in South Carolina are as accessible as it gets. Interstate I-95 crosses Lake Marion and I-26 flanks the twin-lake system to the south. The lakes are connected by a 7-mile-long diversion canal, which provides another unique fishery. Lake Marion’s 102,400 acres of water are a timber-studded, aquatic vegetation-laden fish factory, while Lake Moultrie’s 59,900 acres have an incredible diversity of underwater cover and structure. This twin-lake system provides unmatched freshwater diversity. Marauding striped bass provide surface-schooling triple-digit catches per boat in peak season. The state record blue catfish was taken in 2017 and topped 113-pounds. Catfish in the 50- to 70-pound class are reasonable targets, and the big-fish population is on an upsurge. The system currently holds the world record channel catfish at 58-pounds. Need more? Crappies are abundant and commonly exceed 2 pounds, with 3-pound-plus fish distinctly possible. The system holds state records for black crappie at 5-pounds, largemouth bass topping 16-pounds and the former world record shellcracker that tipped the scales to 5 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces. Santee Cooper is the living legend of freshwater fishing. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM I NOVEMBER 2018 I NATIONAL 9 INFORMATION: www.santeecoopercountry.org

ifteen years ago, a friend and I flew into San Jose and took a small plane to Quepos, Costa Rica, where we fished offshore on a 42 express boat called Fishing Frenzy. It was my first fishing trip to Costa Rica, and I didn’t know it at the time, but the over-the-top offshore experience was typical for this tropical Central American paradise. It consisted of plenty of tuna, sailfish and dorado, and the never-ending chase for marlin. The trip had such an impact that it became an annual event. Then, four years ago everything changed. I started some business dealings in Costa Rica, which allowed me to begin splitting time between Costa Rica and my native south Florida. It has been the adventure of a lifetime. I’m not sure I can say what specifically drew me to Costa Rica. I think it’s a little bit of everything. The people, the adventure, the fishing and the beautiful scenery are all truly amazing. The people are always happy and definitely live the national slogan “Pura Vida,” which translates to “The Pure Life.” The diversity and magnificence of the scenery is over the top. Delivering Coastal Angler Magazine throughout the country has exposed me to different and varying locations. Within a four hour drive I can be exposed to the volcanos and hot springs of Arenal, the gorgeous beaches and surfing of Guanacaste, the beautiful and exotic jungles of Golfito and the Osa Peninsula, the quiet beauty and fishing of the Nicoya Peninsula, the world class surfing and fishing of Herradura, Hermosa and Quepos, and even the cooler climates and cultural centers of the Central Valley. The tourism of Costa Rica is truly an adventure. From ziplining through a jungle canopy to four wheeling up a mountain, from white water rafting to rappelling down a waterfall, and even seeing sloths and monkeys in their natural habitats, the adventures are endless. Adventure definitely exists in the fishing of Costa Rica. In 2017 the Herradura Quepos fishery was named the No. 1 billfishing area in the world by the Billfish Report. Offshore fishing easily offers the complete line up of pelagic fish and often includes double-digit catches. This is one of the few countries where catching an offshore billfish grand slam can be accomplished in one day. Last month, Coastal Angler Editor-in-Chief Ben Martin came down and we managed to squeeze in one day of fishing on my 32 Luhrs, Dream II out of Los Suenos. Where else in the world can you catch two blue marlin, two sailfish, and 15 dorado in a day of fishing? The inshore fishing for roosterfish, cubera snapper, snook and even tarpon is also world class. The freshwater fishing offers everything from rainbow bass (guapote) to machaca, and trout to largemouth bass. I have been to many places in the world, and Costa Rica stands out as one of my favorite bucket list destinations. Mike Erickson is co-publisher of Coastal Angler Magazine Costa Rica.

t’s 2 p.m. on a bright, sunny day and I’m pitching pilchards in the shadow of a small bridge not 50 yards from a marina. As my bait turns and swims momentarily into the sunlight, a sudden swirl connects me to a solid slot-sized snook. My line has been in the water for less than a minute. “It can happen fast,” chuckled Capt. George Gozdz, who in 2019 is scheduled to host a new fishing show on The Sportsman Channel called Unfathomed. “There’s quality snook under almost any significant structure around here.” “Around here” would be the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and St. Lucie River system, an estuarine wonderland on Florida’s southeast coast that stretches 155 miles and dishes up everything from monster snook, gator trout and delicious pompano to king-sized tarpon, jacks and a variety of grouper. The city of Stuart sits dead-center in this expansive maze of fishing heaven, and makes the perfect launch point Capt. George Gozdz shows off a monfor learning these waters. ster St. Lucie River snook. Look for “The diversity in this area is 8- to 10-foot depths with good current something special,” explained Gonear structure to find the big ones, he zdz, “Two systems converge here, said. Photo courtesy of George Gozdz. the St. Lucie River and Indian River, and St. Lucie Inlet provides access for ocean pelagics like sailfish. Inshore, snook is the most popular target on a year-round basis. From December through March, you’ll find the best action up inside the St. Lucie River because the water is warmest there. The stretch from Rt. A1A (aka: 10 Cent Bridge) west into the north or south fork of the St. Lucie River is the prime winter snook area. I throw Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and Hydro Poppers in low light conditions and pitch pilchards once the sun gets up in the sky.” Generally speaking, tidal stage doesn’t matter much for these snook, as long as the water is moving. Look for heavy structure near 10-foot depths with good flow and you’ll eventually connect. “Keep in mind this isn’t finesse fishing,” advised Gozdz. “There’s no way to haul a big snook— they can top 40 inches in length—out of heavy structure with light lines. I use 80-lb. test Yo-Zuri Super Braid with an 80- to 100-lb. test Top Knot fluorocarbon leader.” If you are looking to stay overnight in Stuart, Pirate’s Cove Resort and Marina (www.piratescoveresort.com; 772-287-2500) is a great choice with affordable rooms, wet slips and free launching around the corner at the Sandsprit Park. F

or a builder of the finest quality custom boats to survive in the competitive market of today, there can be no compromises. When precision craftsmanship meets thoughtful engineering and a flawless design, magic can happen. The magic comes with a hefty price, however, a price that isn’t measured in currency. For a boat builder to set the standard by which all others are measured, a tremendous amount of scrutiny from both the consumer as well as industry peers should be expected. There can be no short cuts, and each and every detail down to the last unseen screw must be perfect. This all requires a great deal of time. Man-hours. Very few people have the vision or sense of commitment to play at anything in their lives at this level. An enduring commitment to

maintain the highest standards at whatever cost has taken down many players in the boatbuilding game historically. Ultimately, they are all faced with the crossroads moment where either you pack up your tools and call it a day or form a plan to build it faster and cheaper, all in the interest of increasing that bottom line. For an elite few members of this profession, the boats have always come first. At the end of the day, if the integrity of their name or the boats that leave their shop are ever to be compromised, they’ve lost sight of the reason they got into the game. Pride. The team at Bahama Boat Works has devoted an entire lifetime to mastering every facet of the boating industry, compiling a list of credentials along the way that few can lay claim to. From running to rigging and designing to building, Bahama Boat Works has gained familiarity with every last detail of what makes a boat ride, run, look and fish better than all others. It takes these elements past the design stage to the construction stage and ultimately produces boats that draw admiration from everyone that lays eyes on them, boaters and non-boaters alike. The Bahama team has put in the man-hours. From base camp to spike camp to summit, the Bahama 41 has proven herself to be at the top of the food chain for years now. An Apex Predator staring down from the mountaintop ready to take on all challengers. As the entire Bahama Boat Works team prepares to put the landmark Hull #100 boat into service, a milestone that few custom boat builders ever get to enjoy, congratulations are certainly in order. Don’t, however, expect to find them putting their feet up or celebrating too enthusiastically. You are more likely to find them working out the smallest detail on the next hull in production. A detail that her future owner may never even know about but the team at Bahama and their pride wouldn’t consider overlooking.

grouper will find their way into shallower waters. Every year we catch some really nice gags in about 30- to 50-feet of water on some big ledges and structures. If you are after pelagics, use live baits for the best results. You can sabiki up some cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or blue runners. You can either slow troll the baits or flat line while you are anchored up bottom fishing. I would like to clarify to anyone who is wanting to fish and might be hesitant due to the red tide water conditions, once you get out past the red tide the fishing is outstanding, and there are no concerns of the safety of eating the fish. At the time of writing this, the red tide had cleared out almost completely. Try and keep using local businesses and help out those restaurants and businesses that are located on the water and nearby. There are many businesses that are struggling this season because of the lack of tourists. We all must stick together to get through this crisis. Remember to always follow state and federal regulations. Be courteous of other boaters, and keep only what you can eat.

ovember is the month where just about anything can happen in the Gulf of Mexico off south Florida. Offshore water temperatures will be slowly getting cooler and the baitfish will start migrating south. Along with the bait, comes a multitude of species following right behind them. Kingfish, blackfin tuna and cobia are my favorite fish to target in the fall. This year we will have to travel a little deeper than usual due to the red tide problem. Typically, I like to fish the beach area and out to around 50 feet of water for pelagics, but this season I am anticipating the bait will be out a little deeper in cooler waters. The red tide in our area has been out to almost 45 feet of water, depending on which way the wind is blowing that day. You have to find clean water to find the fish in these conditions. Bottom fish are always plentiful in November, as well. The gag

eef Runner Boats recently unveiled its new Battle Breast Cancer Boat, which will be raffled at the Miami International Boat Show in February to raise money for Susan G Komen for the Cure (SGK). This is the second year the Miami-based boat builder has raffled a brand new boat for the foundation, and Reef Runner owner Donna Milo said they hope to raise $20,000 with this year’s raffle. Since its founding in 1999, the Miami/Fort Lauderdale chapter of SGK has invested nearly $11 million in local breast cancer awareness projects, such as education programs, funding for patient screening, diagnostics and treatment. The chapter also donates 25 percent of remaining net funds to national breast cancer research programs. Reef Runner is ponying up a pretty sweet ride to the cause. It is a Reef Runner 180 Bay—an 18-foot, wide-beamed boat that is perfect for fishing and family cruising. It has a fuel-efficient hull design, lots of storage and a roomy, fully finished interior liner. The boat also has a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard motor. TACO Marine also jumped on board with cause by donating and installing brand new Rigid Vinyl Rub Rail, end caps, navigation lights and poly tumbler holders for the Battle Breast Cancer Boat. The boat will be raffled on the final day of the Miami International Boat Show, Monday, Feb. 18, 2019 at 1 p.m. Raffle tickets are on sale Airline_Ad_CoastalAngler_8-1-14_Layout 1 8/1/14 1:14 PM Page 1 online at reefrunnerboats.com. racey Smith is not your average 21-year-old lady angler. Her dedication to fishing and the marine environment result from hardships she was forced to overcome. Diagnosed with high-risk hypodiploid leukemia when she was just 15 years old, this Jacksonville girl spent time in the intensive care unit and underwent a double stem cell transplant at the tender age of 16. She was forced to have a hip replacement at 19. Cancer put an end to the sports, and softball in particular, which were the passion of her life. “Through all the struggle and pain, I fought for my life,” she wrote in an email that included multiple photos of impressive fish she has caught over the years. “I couldn’t die! I wanted to do so much more.” The new passion she found was for fishing. While the other sports she loves would cause her terrible pain, she can still fish. “I pushed myself to be more active and to get healthier,” she wrote. “I challenged myself with catching bigger fish. When I’m not out tagging sharks for NOAA, I’m offshore or on a pier just having fun. I just want everyone to know that anything you put your mind to is possible. Don’t give up. It may be difficult at times but it gets better!” Smith spent a summer in Colorado doing conservation work and a month in Puerto Rico during the hurricane relief effort last year. She is currently working with FEMA in hurricane relief, and looks forward to enrolling in Florida State College at Jacksonville in the spring. Her goal is to become a marine biologist working to save marine life. Smith is celebrating five years cancer free!

Fishing Report & Forecast Mayport By Capt. Kirk Waltz

T

he month of November should be normal for us discounting that after Hurricane seasom we don’t get another huge storm. Michael brought some winds and weather to us that really had some negative effects to our fishery. With that being said, I believe the big rocks should be really good this month. October’s weather might be a real blessing to the fishery this month. Look for shrimp and mullet to be pushing out of the river driving trout, black drum, reds, flounder, and sheepshead to the inlet. The black drum started showing last month and I believe they will increase in numbers during November. Cut crab, shrimp or fiddlers work well typically fished on the bottom near the ends of the rocks. The bottom of the dead low or the last push of the high flood seems to be the most productive times. An egg sinker Carolina rig works well, 3-way swivel rig and even a small jig when the current slows can be deadly. Redfish will also be in the same areas and will readily take the same baits. Look for the Bull Reds to still be around but, beginning to wane as the water cools. The edges of the shipping channel is your best bet all the way to the Dames Point Bridge and a few spots past that. A half of a blue crab or cut mullet are my favorite go to bait fished with a stout Ugly Stix Tiger rod and a Penn SpinFisher 6500. The last of the falling tide to dead 4 NE FLORIDA

low seems to be best. Remember these are the breeding stock so handle them with kid gloves. Yellow mouthed trout should begin to show in good numbers as well as the croakers. The outside of the big stones are good areas and the edges of the channel towards White Shell Rocks are favored haunts. Cut mullet or live shrimp seem to work well for these tasty and testy fighters. I typically use a light tackle rod with a 1/4oz jig or a small float rig for the trout and a Carolina /egg sinker rig for the croakers. Sheepshead should move onto the local docks, rocks and jetties this month. The sheeps seemed to move in early last month in scattered numbers and I think they will increase in numbers. Small shrimp or fiddler crabs are great baits for this. An egg sinker rig or jig head tossed into the structure are great methods for catching some of these testy fighters. The docks at Mayport, rocks at White Shell, and the big jetties are favored haunts for sheepshead, The offshore scene this month should improve for sea bass, snapper, and hopefully grouper. The near shore party grounds are your best bet. Cut squid, cigars, and even cut mullet work well for me fished on the bottom. Make sure you check the regulations to see what you can keep. Go to MYFWC to look at what is and isn’t legal this month. Remember you can’t catch them from the couch. To book a Charter Capt. Kirk can be reached at 904-626-1128 or 904-241-7560 or go to www.Enterprisefishingcharters.com or visit us on Facebook. Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Inshore By Capt. Tommy Derringer

I

t’s “flatty” time!.... I’m talking about big “doormat” flounder. Traditionally the Fall is a great time to target and catch big flounder in St. Augustine. A live finger mullet or a big mud minnow rigged on a jighead or fish-finder rig is the go-to setup. Flounder will be holding in deep cuts in the creeks at lower tide stages as well as just about any small creek mouth or runout. It’s not uncommon to find them stacked up in these areas so if you get one make sure to try a few more casts in the same spot. Another popular spot to target the flat fish is at the inlets. They will hold close to the jetties… you’ll know you’re fishing the right spot after you’ve lost a rig or three to the rocks. It seems like every year most of the monster “doormat” founder come from in and around the inlets. As our weather continues to cool off trout catches should be on the increase both in size and in numbers. We’ll have some big tides and a Northeast wind flow this month that should bring in some saltier, cleaner water to the backcountry. The trout seem to like the saltier water and the best bite as of report time has been closer to the inlets where the ocean water is making its way in. Toss a top-water or sub-surface plug for trout around first and last light. Two of my favorite top-water lures for trout (and redfish) are the Rapala Skitterwalk and the Rapala Skitter V. Your best bet when targeting

trout is to look for moving water at creek mouths, around oyster bars, and along the ICW banks, again closer to the inlets. Sea walls, jetties, and rip-rap are also good trout haunts. The good ‘ole live shrimp under a float is always a sure thing for trout. The soft plastic STB jerkbaits from Slayer Inc. imitates a finger mullet perfectly and they have been producing some nice trout (redfish and flounder seem to love them as well). Pair them up with a 1/8 or ¼ ounce Slayer Inc. jighead and you’ve got a deadly trout combo. Our redfish love the cooler weather and this is such a great time of year to get out there and catch them. Redfish will continue to shadow finger mullet schools this month. There should be a ton of finger mullet around so when you find a really good concentration of them you can be sure the reds won’t be far behind. Low tide creek hole fishing for reds should be hot this month as well as the banks of the ICW at low tide. Many people overlook these banks but when the tide is low and the mullet are schooled up Mr. redfish will be on the prowl! The water will continue to be fairly murky at least until the water temps really drop down so using a bait or lure with some really good action or some good scent is the best way to spark interest from a redfish. One go-to Fall redfish lure is a Saltwater Assassin Lil Boss paddle tail… the thumping tail and scent helps the fish locate the bait in our murky water. Happy Thanksgiving and Tight Lines! deally we should all be catching fish or hunting, enjoying the slight cooldown and preparing for the fall/winter fishing. Since the Shrimp have not done anything normal, I state that if you try and you get them, more power to you. As a whole, this goes down as a meager year at best. Flounder will be active in and around Doctors Inlet, the hard shell bays and the City pier. Baits of choice should be plastic grubs, snout worms and shiners. The medium/smallish ones are the best. Go and give it a fling. Reds and Croaker will be rockin’ it, if we don’t have any super cool-down. They love to eat as much as possible and bait shrimp, night crawlers, and crabs will get you a tug on the line or two. So grab it and go! 6 NE FLORIDA

Bass will be feeding like there’s no tomorrow before the temp drops. They’ll be hitting the bait pods and eating all they can. Watch for bird activity when you’re trying to jump these schoolers. Also using crank baits in 8-10 feet of water might just fool them into a try or two. So have at it. Specks will start showing up in the creeks, mouths of creeks and around bridge pilings and deep water blow-downs. You can use a variety of baits: road runners, crab tail jigs, tube jigs, regular jigs, beetle spins and jig heads tipped with minnows. You can also use just minnows, with a slip cork and/ or split shot. These beauties will be deep usually starting at 18-15 to 12-10 feet. You’ve got to work at it, but the ones you catch usually are well worth it. Bream fishing is slowing down with the cooling down. You’ll still catch them in the pads with poppers or dipping or glob of worms in the pads. The plus side to the last method is the Warmouth will be happy to tug your string and surprisingly a lot of them are very respectable. So give it a try. Well, it’s short, but action packed! So, ‘til next time, keep your line wet and your lure movin’--Richard

5 Tips for Buying Waterfront Property

By Mark Feagle, Jr. REALTOR® and Certified Residential Contractor mfeagle@watsonrealtycorp.com

M

any dream of owning a home on one of our breathtaking Florida waterways, but there are many things to be cautious of, as we were sternly reminded with Hurricanes Matthew and Irma the last two years. When purchasing your lot to build on, or buying an existing home, here are a few considerations before making an offer. • Do some soul-searching - What type of waterfront property will best suit your family’s lifestyle - river, lake, ocean, creek, canal? What are your most important criteria – view, navigation to ocean, privacy, lot size? Unlike new flooring and paint, these details of the property cannot be changed later. Figure out what your non-negotiables are. • Cost to own and maintain - The cost of owning and maintaining a waterfront home is considerable. It is important to understand what your required costs will be that are unique to the property. Before making an offer, get quotes for homeowners’ and flood insurance. If flood insurance is required, find out how much the current owner pays for their policy. You may be able to get the same rate from their carrier. Find out if there are Homeowners Association fees, CDD fees or special assessments. All of these items will weigh in with your lender as he/she determines how much your monthly payment will be and how much cash you will be expected to bring to closing. • The CCCL – The Coastal Construction Control Line is relevant for oceanfront homes and structures. The CCCL regulates how you can build or rebuild on your oceanfront property with consideration to the environment, upland properties and public access. • Property history – In Florida, sellers of real property (and their

REALTORS®) have a legal obligation to disclose anything they know about the property that could affect the value and that is not readily observable to the prospective buyer. For example, if the home has ever flooded the seller must disclose this information. Ask how the property fared during the most recent storms. • Recreation – What size watercraft can the dock and waterway accommodate? Will bridge heights play a factor? Is the water tidal? What species of fish and wildlife inhabit the area? Will local zoning and permitting authorities allow future improvements to the current dock or boathouse? Enjoying your waterfront property, the way you envision, is the ultimate goal! If this list seems daunting, seek the guidance of a real estate professional. A full-time, local REALTOR® knows the market, the right questions to ask, and where to find the answers. They can put you in touch with the appropriate governmental departments for permitting and zoning issues, and they have reliable resources for financing, insuring and maintaining your new “Dream Home”. A conscientious boater wouldn’t go out on the water without proper safety equipment and checking the weather report; by the same token, if you’re in the market for a waterfront property, make sure you do your homework and enlist the help of professionals.

he fun fish have left the building! Great time for start of the backcountry fishing, many red fish will start to invade the flats as the October mullet run forces the bait to the warmer southern waters. A TBS Jig paired with the shrimp or mudminnow could be the combination to many different fish in the shallow waters. Using shrimp you can catch black drum redfish, trout, flounder, and sheepshead, and just about anything. Mud minnows, do not work as well to catch sheepshead or black drum so if you’re in an area that can produce those, think about using shrimp. The last half of the outgoing tide can produce well as the fish get pulled from hard to reach areas. Outflows & rips around oyster bars & structure is a good place to

soak a TBS jig & bait combo. Use a 30 inch piece of fluorocarbon as leader. I find 15-20 lb best. Many different species can be caught like this. Flounder will still be in the mix. Fishing around structure with a jig & mud minnow or finger mullet can be a ticket. Structure towards local inlets can hold fish. If you are after trout, standard methods will still be producing. lure fishing will be good, as the water cools & the last of the bait heads south, work areas like edges of holes, deeper bends, & remaining bait and mullet pods. See you next month. Capt. Tony Bozzella / TBS JIGS Professional Angler / Guide www.tonybozzella.com 904 651 0182

Fishing Report Pier and Surf By: Noel Kuhn

T

his is the month! The one month of the year when you can count on catching fish in the surf zone. Whether from the pier or the beach this is the month to get your string stretched! The water temperature is dropping and the mullet run that started in September is still going off. The most important thing to remember this time of the year is matching the hatch. As long as there is mullet in the surf then fish with mullet. All of the predator fish will be on the inside and outside of the first sand bar. It does not matter if you use fresh chunks or frisky live finger mullet. Something will munch your bait. It could be redfish, bluefish, ladyfish, shark, tarpon, trout, flounder, or a lot of other species. A small 3/0 circle hook will get the job done for most fish. I like to use a sinker slider rig with a 15 inch dropper of 30lb mono. For big reds and tarpon I step it up to a 7/0 with 100lb mono. On the top part of the sinker slider I use six feet of 100lb mono. This is very helpful when sliding a big fish up in the wash for a quick picture before releasing. It was a crazy summer for the fact that we caught pompano all

summer long. I guess that not all of them were up for the long trip to the OBX of North Carolina. Now is the time to catch the big ones that do not come back until the water gets cold in the Carolinas. For these tasty hard fighting members of the jack family rigging is simple. A two hook double dropper rig is the best way to go. A 2/0 circle hook will get the job done for a two pound pomp, a five pound black drum, or a twenty pound redfish. All three of those fish plus the tasty whiting will all strike a double dropper rig tipped with fresh bait. Great bait equals great fishing. When you hit the surf zone you should have multiple baits. The go to baits are FKS aka fresh killed shrimp, live sand fleas, live clams, and blue crab knuckles. The live shrimp, soon to be FKS, you’ll buy at the bait store. No water needed just a plastic container to keep them out of the ice. The sand fleas you’ll have to catch at the beach. Your favorite seafood retailer can supply the live clams and blue crabs. Remember with all four of these baits match the hatch in size. A one inch by half inch piece is all that it takes. The fish are munching on fleas and donax clams which both smaller than a quarter. Go now and go often because it doesn’t get any better than Octoberfish! Cheers!

Beware the of the Bears By CAM Staff

H

aving grown up here locally, my hunting opportunities were always limited. You could go to Guana Wildlife Management Area which is located between Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine and hunt for wild pigs and deer. Or maybe even venture to the other side of Jacksonville and hunt one of the other state run wildlife management areas. With what always seemed like a crowd of hunters looking for their own place to hunt.

was now on the agenda. Brad and his brother, Barry, bought a beautiful home in Dubois, Wyoming on the top of Union Pass. The views were spectacular. When Brad and Barry went to see the house the very first time, Brad instantly knew that this was it. As they turned into his future driveway the first thing he saw was a magnificent 6x6 bull elk standing in the front yard. He had arrived and twelve years later he has become a very successful elk hunter. Numerous friends that he has invited up to hunt have taken their first elk, mule deer, or even antelope while hunting with him. The elk especially are big weighing in at 500 to 750 pounds. They are not animals that you can just pull into a pick up truck and drive around to show off for your buddies. Cleaning in place and packing out are the norm. Think about this, harvest a big bull elk three miles from the nearest road late one afternoon. If you decide to clean it then and pack it out then you can bet you’ll see the sunrise in the morning well before you are done. So normally, hunters field dress those animals and come back the next morning to do all of the hard work. This is where the story can change a lot because in some of the areas that elk roam so do bears, black bears and grizzly bears to be exact. Black bears are more of a nuisance than grizzlies for several reasons. 1) They

The friends that i hunted with and myself were successful at times but mostly it was an exercise in futility. A few nice hogs and the occasion lost deer gave us bragging rights (amongst ourselves only) that we were great hunters. As we grew older more hunting opportunities came up and as most hunters do, we learned so much more about hunting. We quickly found out that we really didn’t know much about the sport at all. Food sources, bedding areas, funnels, edges, rubs, scraps, track signs, and what they meant were just a few of the small things that eventually added up to successful hunts. Bigger and bigger game soon turned out to be the ultimate quest. In my case that meant one animal in particular, elk. I remember watching some of the very few hunting TV shows that were actually aired back in those days. The american sportmans was my favorite because it would show hunting in far away places and every now and then, elk would be the target. How great would it be to hunt elk? But back then, the Rocky Mountains seemed such a long ways away that hunting there probably would never happen. When my longtime hunting partner and best friend, Brad Reed, decided to The size and power of a Grizzly bear is overpowering. move to Wyoming things changed. Elk

are hunted every year and thus are mostly afraid of human contact 2) They are smaller than grizzlies and are not as much of a threat and 3) when they find a carcus that has been left overnight they are more likely to leave it when confronted with human presence. Don’t misinterpret any of the above to mean that black bears aren’t dangerous, because they are. When it comes to grizzlies there is a huge difference. Start with his size. A male grizzly can weight over a thousand pounds and

morning the carcass had been moved by two grizzly bears. After a short search, the elk carcass was found and the hunter and his guide started cleaning it. Thats when the attack occurred. Brad Reed had an opportunity to talk with the guides father who gave the following details on the attack. Mark (the guide) had quartered the elk out and was preparing the meat for loading onto the pack horses. The bears appeared and the female bear attacked Cory (the hunter). At this point, the guide got the bear’s attention and the bear left Cory and attacked Mark. While fighting off the bear Mark yelled for Cory to get his pistol out of the backpack which he did. The pistol was a block 10mm semiautomatic. Cory didn’t know how to operate it and while trying to get a shot off he hit the wrong button and dropped the clip onto the ground. Then Mark yelled for Cory to throw the pistol to him which he did. As the pistol was coming towards Mark the bear reached out and swatted it out of the air. It landed to far from Mark for him to grab it. The pistol was then useless. Cory then fled for his life a Mark rolled over and played dead. The bear sensing that the threat was gone went to the elk carcass. After a short time Mark tried to escape the area by crawling away. He made it about 40 yards before the bear realized Mark was moving at which point he returned to Mark and finished him off. The words of the victims father follow very closely to the media accounts so i fully believe them to be A mother Grizzly is very dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. true. Fishing Report & Forecast Flagler Inshore By Captain Chris Herrera

C

reek bends, shallow flats, Inlets, docks and creek mouths, what do these areas have in common? Flounder, it’s that time of year when water temperatures (68 degrees) dictate flounder activity and the annual flounder run starts. It’s fairly simple fishing as using a ¼ ounce Slayer Jig head with a finger mullet or mud minnow slowly dragged across the bottom. Other simple rigs consist of using split shots or an egg sinker (fish finder rig) and 14 inches of leader with a 3/0 Daiichi D16Z Octopus wide hook. For artificial applications any jig head and soft plastic combo (Z-man Paddle Tail) works well in deep water areas. Spoons, soft plastics and hard baits fished on shallow sandbars will produce flatties as well. Flounder strikes or “thumps” as I like to call it are very distinct to other inshore game fish. When fishing for flounder patience pays a great part after feeling the “thump”. Flounder will grab a hold of your bait and sit on the bottom till bait stops moving around and that’s when the flounder will turn mullet or mud minnow around and swallow it head first which

will initiate the second “thump”. Many “Old Salt” flounder anglers know the importance of feeling for flounder on the line by slowly lifting the rod tip to make sure the flounder is still attached to the line and then give some slack for about a minute before setting the hook. Trout fisherman will get their limit and more using float rigs at Matanzas Inlet with shrimp being the top bait. The last 2 hours of outgoing tide and first of incoming is the locals preferred time to fish. Topwater plugs like a Spook Jr., Rapala or Mirrorlure can catch the biggest trout looking for a bite in the shallows or ICW drop offs at creek mouths. When the bite slows down on top switch gears to diving plugs like a Sebile Stick Shadd or curly tail grubs with a ¼ ounce Slayer jig. Redfish will start to huddle in masses and seek the warmth of oyster beds during afternoon high tides. Long casting spoons or jerkbaits will produce. For scattered redfish live or cut mullet on a fish finder rig tossed around points, creek mouths or oysters will do the trick. During low tides look for reds cruising shallow mud banks with their backs out of the water chasing small grass shrimp. Matching the hatch (live shrimp) or a FishBites shrimp on a weedless hook tossed in front of a belly crawling redfish will result in a catch.. Capt. Fishing Report & Forecast Fernandina / Amelia Island By Terry D. Lacoss

G

ood numbers of red drum will be schooling both at the tip of Amelia Island and the deep waters of the St. Mary’s jetty rocks and sound. Fishing dead on the bottom with cut mullet, ladyfish, or menhaden is key when hooking up to the late Fall redfish run. My favorite Fall redfish technique includes deep jigging with a ½ ounce led head rigged with a 3-inch Berkley Gulp shrimp in the “New Penny” color pattern. When the redfish are really fired up, try vertical

jigging with a 1-ounce Hopkins silver spoon! Fishermen are advised to keep hooked redfish in the water when releasing your catch. If the air bladder is inflated use a venting tool to deflate the air bladder. The venting tool consists of a hollow needle 1.5 inches long. Puncture the redfish at a 75-degree angle at the tip of the pectoral fin until you hear the air excepting the air bladder. Sea trout will also be schooling during the falling tide at both the St. Mary’s north and south jetty rocks. The small rock jetties located at the southern portion of Amelia Island is also a real hot spot for late Fall redfish and sea trout too with the best fishing coming during the morning and late in the evening hours. Work a ¼ ounce led head rigged to a clear colored plastic curly tail with blue glitter slowly along the bottom. Offshore bottom fishermen should do well while bottom fishing at some of the near to shore rock ledges and live bottoms. Gag grouper and giant sea bass are plentiful at FA, FC, HH and Schultz’s live bottoms during pleasant weather days during the month of November. Best bottom fishing tactic includes fishing dead on the bottom with live cigar minnows or fresh local squid. Schooling redfish will showcase the backwater bays and small tidal estuaries, particularly during a full flood tide on the flooded marshes, or during a low falling tide where bays drain into main river channels. Don’t waste a lot of time fishing in one spot when the action is slow, keep moving and you will sure to find a nice late Fall redfish bite! Cast a black and gold swim bait, or topwater Chug Bug. Finally black drum weighing to 50-pounds are plentiful during the month of November in the deep waters of Cumberland Sound and the mouth of Bell’s River. Fish dead on the bottom during the slack moving tides with a quarter blue crab. Barb small pieces of shrimp while black drum fishing and enjoy a nice fall whiting bite as well. The Nassau Landing located on Edwards Road offers quick access to some of northeast Florida’s best striped bass fishing. Striped bass fishermen launching their skiff at the Nassau Landing will also find easy access to Thomas Creek where some of the best fall, winter and spring striped bass fishing can be experienced. Striper fishermen launching their boats at the St. Mary’s public boat ramp located at the waterfront park will have easy access to outstanding fall striped bass fishing in the St. Mary’s River. Look for some of the best striped bass fishing here to come under and close to the I-95 Bridge. Best lures for stripers include a slow sinking minnow type plug in the blue back and silver color pattern, white “Swim Bait” or a ½ ounce white spinner bait with a silver #5 willow leaf blade. Upcoming Events: November 13: Monthly Member Meeting: VFW Palm Coast – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC – Quick Tips at 7:00pm; Meeting at 7:30pm November 17: The Creekside festival was a big hit this year with a kid’s clinic put on by the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce and the club. The kids were given nice bags, as well as fishing rods, and were able to learn various fishing skills and techniques by going through different “stations.” This past weekend the club held it’s Annual picnic at Herschel King Park. It was a great event with an equally great turnout. It was a good day of weather, with a nice breeze. There was some awesome food and it was a dessert lover’s paradise! Everyone had

fun playing horseshoes and corn hole, as well. Since we have been supporting the DAV this year, beginning with our Charity tournament this past April, the club has decided to do a raffle at our November meeting to support the local DAV, which comes just in time for Veteran’s Day. There will be a large piece of metal fish artwork, which will be raffled during the meeting. So come out and help support this wonderful organization! Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Offshore By Capt. Robert Johnson

Seen any Floppers? To most people that is a strange question, but to a diehard Sail fish enthusiast a hopeful request. November marks the arrival of cold fronts in NE FL. And with the cold fronts come the Sails. Find the bait in 21 to 28 fathoms and you will find Sail fish. This is light tackle time with 30# being plenty. Small ballyhoo rigged on 80# monof i l ame nt leaders is the bait of choice. Trolling speed should be just fast enough for your baits to swim. The typical spread would be a couple of flat lines off the transom and

2 long and 2 short outrigger baits. A couple of mullet dredges will greatly increase your odds. If you raise a fish, be sure there are more around. Fall Sailfish are seldom alone, double and triple hook ups are not uncommon. If trolling isn’t your scene bottom fishing in November is usually great. As water temps start to cool the fish seem to want to stock up fat for the winter. Cobia are a regular Thanksgiving guest. A live grunt fished up in the water column or a jig worked vertically will produce some very nice fish. There should also be a few gag Grouper around as the fish up off the Carolinas move south in preparation for the upcoming Jan-April spawn. The normal array of Vermillion, Red Porgy and Trigger fish will also be on the chew. Pay attention to the cold fronts and fish in front of them and enjoy some hot fishing as the temperatures cool

The Northeast Florida Marlin Association

F

all is in full swing and we have been busy with fishing and football at the Northeast Florida Marlin Association. We sponsored a weekend Swordfish Tournament , a week long Sailfish Tournament and a Dock Party. There were a few Swordfish weighed and few releases in the tournament. Congrats to the Final Approval for bringing in the heaviest Sword. We have a few club members that fish for Swords regularly. They are here, but it seems the North Florida fisherman have not been targeting them like our south Florida friends. That is likely because of the distance that we need to run before we put lines out. Swordfishing has traditionally been a night time sport but that is changing. Jeff Crabtree, a new NEFMA Board member recently kicked off the Swordfish Showdown. This is a shootout style tournament that runs until 10/22 and allows anglers to choose 2 days to fish. For updates on catches you can visit www.swordfishshowdown. com/ . The NEFMA Sailfish tournament proved that it may have been a little early for our Sailfish run. Captains were allowed to choose 1 day to fish over a 9 day period. Boats reported very warm water and lots

of weeds. There were acres of flying fish in the 21 bottom but very few Sails. However as can be expected when grass and fliers are present so are the Mahia. Lots of bailers and few gaffers were reported. Aaron Galley on his boat Cuervos captured the only Sail and was declared winner. We hosted a dock party at the NEFMA club house and watched the Jag’s defeat the Patriots ! Wahoo fishing is right around the corner and as we have all noticed it seems that people have gone “Wahoo” crazy. Breakout the big lures, heavy weights and tighten the drags. There is no sound like that of a screaming drag as the boat goes one direction at 16 knots and the fish is going the other at 25 knots ! NEFMA will be holding the second annual Don Combs Winter Wahoo Roundup. Captains meeting is 12/7 and the fishing is Captains choice 2 days between 12/8 and 1/27. We had 40 boats last year and a nice payout to our winners. Check our website for more details or call tournament chairman Scott Stanley at 904-234-7182.

FISH & FISHING

MARK SOSIN

I

t took me awhile to realize it. Early in my career, my goal was to fish for as many different species as possible in freshwater and salt. That meant traveling from the Arctic (Alaska, Greenland and Iceland) to the tip of South America (Chile and Argentina) and everywhere in between. Travel also took me to Europe and Africa. I fished Scotland for salmon, the Cuanza River in Angola for husky tarpon, and interior waters in central Africa for tigerfish. Add to that probing the Amazon and its tributaries for peacock bass and other species. My passion for travel took me to countless countries in pursuit of various species. Sometimes, I would be one of very few Americans who fished remote waters in one land or another. And, it should be noted that I visited all 50 states and fished in many of them for a wide variety of species. When I started in the outdoor business, the late Joe Brooks told me to fish for as many species as possible everywhere in the world. I took his advice. As the years rolled by, people began to ask where my favorite place to fish was. Coming up with an answer wasn’t easy. After considerable thought and deliberation, I decided that if I had to fish only one place, my choice would be Miami, Fla. Let me tell you why. It’s easy to reach by plane, car or train. You can stay in a five star hotel (if that’s your choice) rather than some broken-down cabin in the wilderness. And you also have an incredible choice of restaurants. Biscayne Bay lies at Miami’s doorstep. Among dozens of species, you can focus on bonefish, permit and tarpon on the shallow flats. Government Cut is the main shipping channel leading from the bay to the Atlantic. Just a few miles offshore, the Gulf Stream flows northward carrying warm water that attracts many species of fish. I should point out that right inside the cut you can catch snook and other denizens. Sailfish are a prime target along the Gulf Stream, with an occasional blue marlin surprising anglers. There are also swordfish. Dolphin are plentiful along with tuna, wahoo, kingfish, bonito and many other species. A coral reef plus various submerged wrecks provide a home

for grouper, snapper and other bottom dwellers, and it’s not unusual to find cobia. If redfish is your primary target, it’s a reasonably short drive to Flamingo in Everglades National Park, where the shallows host a large population of reds. Several other species make these waters their home including sharks, tarpon and other critters. I even caught a sawfish in this area once. The Florida Keys really begin in Miami, and it’s an easy drive to Key Largo and beyond. The Overseas Highway has been vastly improved, giving you access to excellent fishing waters. It’s difficult to find a place anywhere in the world that provides an angler an outstanding opportunity to enjoy fishing for some of the greatest gamefish. That’s why Miami holds the title of My Favorite Fishing Hole.

ooking for a vacation destination to take the whole family—a place where you can enjoy nature together and pluck dinner from the ocean and have it cooked that night? Look no farther than the Bahamas. Just a short plane or boat ride from Florida, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas consists of more than 700 islands, cays and islets set in crystal clear water. When it comes to diving, it’s hard to find a more beautiful place with such an abundance of sea life. The warm, clear water and shallow depths make it a diver’s paradise, suitable for beginners and advanced alike. Whether you’re interested in sightseeing on scuba, hunting while freediving or simply snorkeling, everyone is sure to have a good time. Very young divers can snorkel on the surface and are likely to see fish, turtles, stingrays and more. If you’re an underwater hunter, there’s no better place to find a large variety of delicious fish within easy freediving depths. Hogfish, snapper and grouper, as well as conch and lobster, can be found on the beautiful reef formations. It’s no accident that The Bahamas boasts some of the best spearfishing grounds in the world. It was the first country to establish a Land and Sea Park to protect the reefs. Spearfishing is only allowed while freediving and by use of slings or polespears. No scuba or spearguns are allowed. As opposed to being a deterrent, the regulations have made slinging and polespearing a fun and popular trend. While some might consider it a challenge, the clear shallow

water and abundance of fish work in your favor, and no one goes hungry in the Bahamas! Regulations allow conchs and lobsters (during open season), as well as 20 scale fish like groupers and snappers. That’s more than enough to feed a large family. Always double check for the latest regulations, as these may change. If you are hunting, you will want to charter an experienced captain, such as Capt. Luke Maillis with Reel Addictive Charters out of Long Island or Capt. Jesse Leopold with Andros Beach Club out of South Andros Island. If you’re not into hunting—no worries. You can scuba or snorkel on one of the many guided sightseeing charters, which will take you to swim with sharks, dolphins and/or stingrays. There’s Big Game Club Scuba Center or Bimini Undersea out of Bimini, UNEXSO in Freeport, and Stuart Cove’s in Nassau. There’s also AllStar Liveaboards, which offer 4- to 7-day trip packages. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more satisfying than gathering over a meal and talking about your underwater experience. If you picked up seafood along the way, there are many restaurants on the islands that will be happy to cook your catch. This is the type vacation that’s sure to generate fond memories that last a lifetime. There’s a reason they say, “It’s better in the Bahamas.” Check it out and find out why! hen Bob Sundstrom, of Odin Lure Company, created his Oozzie Jig in 2011, he knew right away it was something special. It worked wonders on the New Hampshire coast for cod, haddock and stripers, and he patented his new technology that allows hard baits to disperse a steady stream of fish-attracting scent. Odin Lure Company is the evolution of that design. With its line of topwater poppers and jerkbaits, Odin handcrafts high-quality lures that appeal to all a fish’s senses to draw strikes. From largemouth bass to tuna, anything that will hit a plug will slam Odin’s FRIGG lures. And with the added attraction of a scent trail, FRIGGs are proven on the water to out-catch other lures. “We’ve all had fish follow a lure right to the boat,” Sundstrom said. “You caught that fish’s curiosity through sight and sound, but you haven’t convinced the fish that it’s looking at something to eat.” That’s where the scent system comes into play. For many species, scent is the most important sense utilized in targeting prey. FRIGG

lures use sight, sound and smell to convince even the wariest fish to feed. An empty FRIGG will draw strikes as well as any lure out there, but it’s almost unfair to the fish when injected with a scent product called Fish Smack. Fish Smack was formulated by Bioedge specifically for use with Odin lures. It is a 100 percent natural extract of the oils, enzymes and amino acids from baitfish. It has the viscosity of grease, which makes it uniquely designed for Odin’s “bait chamber.” On retrieve, water pushes through a rubber membrane on the front of the lure and past the Fish Smack in the bait chamber. Scented water exits through laceration points designed to look like gill slits on the lure’s sides. FRIGG lures leave a scented bubble trail that adds an element of realism and triggers strikes. On top of that, the residual baitfish scent in the water acts like chum to attract fish and spur feeding activity. A single injection of Fish Smack will keep the lure “hot” through more than an hour of casts and retrieves. And FRIGGs are remarkably versatile on the retrieve. A concave face gives the seductive wobbling and walking action of a stunned baitfish. When slowed down, the popper’s loud pops, bubbles and gurgles are like ringing the dinner bell. Largemouth, pike, tarpon, redfish, snook, trout, mahi-mahi and tuna are just a few species Odin’s FRIGG poppers and jerkbaits have caught in testing. There are sizes and colors to match whatever fishing you do. Fish Smack also matches the hatch with several different “flavors”— from herring to squid—that appeal to your targeted game fish. All Odin lures are made in the U.S.A. of high quality materials and extra-strong components. Sundstrom hand paints them himself in Odin’s New Hampshire facility, which means he personally oversees the quality of each lure produced. For more information on Odin Lure Company’s revolutionary new lures, see odinlures.com.

laska, the last frontier, is truly a remarkable destination that every angler should experience. Believe it or not, river fishing in Alaska can be done easily without a guide. I like to call it a “do-it-yourself destination.” The famous Kenai Peninsula is a place I have traveled to for several amazing fishing trips. The beautiful scenery in this area alone is worth the trip, and the number of close encounters with wild bull moose, bears, elk, bald eagles, etc. were truly amazing. While there, I find myself not wanting to sleep, since the summer days are never ending and the fishing is usually catching! My last trip to the fabled Kenai River was a last-minute journey

20

I

that proved to be one of my most amazing trips to the peninsula. It was mid-July, and I had been watching the salmon counts and monitoring the run charts for a few weeks. This was going to be my first attempt at catching the larger second run of sockeye salmon. Reports told of massive schools in Cook Inlet that were moving toward the river mouth. Predictions of a record season were starting to fill the nets of the commercial fishermen. As they started to near the river mouth in the town of Kenai, estimates of their arrival at my anticipated ambush point in the small town of Soldotna began to filter in. It was now time to break the news to my wife of this last-minute fishing trip from Texas to Alaska. Fortunately, she understands my passion for the sport and was in full support. The facts that sockeye is her favorite fish to eat and that I had a free airline ticket didn’t hurt. Four days later, the salmon and I hit the banks of the Kenai River in downtown Soldotna. Not only was its perfect timing for the arrival of these large acrobatic fighters, Alaska also increased the limit from three salmon per day to six. Jackpot! For some reason, the crowds were also lighter than what I had witnessed on previous trips. I was not complaining. I was fortunate to harvest my limit each day. With easy limits of salmon in the morning, I found time to head to the Russian River for some rainbow trout on the fly. This is where I had a 15-foot encounter with a momma bear and her two cubs. Fortunately, she didn’t feel threatened as the cubs were crossing the river on a fallen tree. She glanced at me, then to her cubs, back at me, and proceeded to follow her cubs across the river. I will never forget the sheer awe of that experience. A visit to Kenai Peninsula would not be complete without a hike to view Exit Glacier and the Harding Icefields. I have made this hike three times, and if I ever return I will definitely do it again. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

FLY FISHING

Redfish & Tarpon NOW!

T

here may be no better saltwater fish to take on the fly than the tarpon. Hard fighting, high jumping and beauty make this gamefish the holy grail of saltwater fly fishing. However, targeting tarpon on the fly might seem a little intimidating to some. The thought of making a 60-foot cast in a 15-knot wind and presenting a fly to a fish pushing 100 pounds keeps some anglers from venturing onto the flats. Anyone looking to tangle with a tarpon on the fly should first get their chops down by targeting baby tarpon. There is no better year-round fly fishing destination for baby tarpon than the Yucatan Peninsula. Campeche My first experience with Yucatan baby tarpon was the in the Campeche area. The city of Campeche is a wonderful colonial community nestled along the mangrove-lined coast six hours west of Cancun. The city has spec-

t a r p on t o grow up to 40 pounds. Anglers make casts to large schools of rolling tarpon over shallow eel grass flats early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The town of San Felipe is quaint and offers some of the best local seafood in the Yucatan. Rods, Reels And Tackle The tackle set up for Yucatan tarpon is simple. I carry two rigs. The workhorse is a 9-foot, 8-weight rod matched with a large arbor reel that can hold 200 yards of 20- or 30-pound backing. I fish a saltwater taper floating line. The second set up is a 9-foot, 9-weight rod and reel matched with a 30-foot intermediate sink tip and a shorter leader of 7 to 9 feet. This outfit works great subsurface. Leaders

tacular views of the ocean, and the town square is highlighted by an amazing cathedral that towers over the city. The fishing is just as spectacular! Within a short panga ride from your hotel, you can cast flies to rolling tarpon on the open-water flats. Tarpon here are accommodating, often hitting poppers or a well-placed subsurface fly. Once hooked, baby tarpon put on a spectacular show, burning fly line off reels and making their trademark jumps.

Flies My favorite flies for baby tarpon are size 2 Gurglers and Toad patterns. Both these flies will cover any situation you may encounter. My go-to colors are red/ black, chartreuse/white and purple/black. If you’re looking for that first-time tarpon destination and want lots of great sight fishing action, book your trip to the Yucatan peninsula ASAP!

Baby tarpon can be spooky, so keep the fly line out of the tarpon’s field of vision, especially in calm conditions. I suggest a 10- to 12foot leader of 20-pound test with a floating line. You’ll also need a short 40-pound bite tippet.
