t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

made my cast; the fly dropped just on the edge of the light shining into snook-filled water. I could see my fly tracking nearly perfectly as it passed in front of several nice fish waiting for unsuspecting prey. Then the fly swam into darkness without a glance from the linesiders. I continued stripping so as to pick the fly up and cast again. Suddenly my line came tight. I made the strip-set to an explosion, as a 3-foot tarpon erupted from the water, crashing into the dock and throwing my fly amidst a shower of scales and water. That night changed my thoughts on fly fishing forever.

When it comes down to it, sight fishing is the way to go for me. Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of a guide to pole me around the flats of Marco Island, but I have found that at night the docks hold all kinds of fish from snook to tarpon, snapper to trout, and they usually are open to feeding on a fly. Of course there are some things to keep in mind. First, stealth is everything. I like to approach using my electric motor and make sure I keep my distance. Many fish will hang at the edge of the light in the shadows, as was the case of that tarpon. In fact, I’ve caught many just out of the shadows at night. Boat position is also critical. You need to be far enough away to not spook any of the fish, seen or unseen. You also need a good casting angle to the fish. That means getting your fly in front of them and having it work past them in a natural way. I’ll use the electric motor to keep me in position. This also gives me the advantage of moving away from the dock when a large fish is hooked and trying to pull me into barnacle-covered pilings. When there are a lot of fish present, I often anchor or stake up to let things settle. It also gives me time to retie leaders between fish. Now that you are in position, what do you use? A majority of my fish have been caught on a white Clouser. All-black Clousers create a highly visible silhouette and are deadly, as well. Either emulates the ever-present glass minnows. Of late, I’ve upped the size of my flies and have found that larger baitfish patterns with bigger profile often get seen easier and thus get more takers. Above all, be respectful. When you find someone kind enough to leave those fish-attracting lights on, always do the right thing. Never go on the dock, and keep quite. Much of this fishing is done late at night, and dock owners who turn their lights off will tell you it’s because of noisy fishermen. FLORIDA SCALLOP REPORT: PASCO COUNTY DOMINATES

calloping season is a big deal on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Every year during short and carefully managed seasons, divers and snorklers are set free to harvest these tasty little morsels along a nearly 800mile stretch of coastline in state waters from Gulf County to Pasco County. Beginning in July and stretching through September, the open season dates vary across five regions determined by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Some years, picking up a limit of bay scallops out of grassy shallows is as easy as an Easter egg hunt. This summer many scallopers were asking, “Where are the scallops?”

The normally predictable Crystal River and Homosassa scallop grounds weren’t as predictable or productive this year as in years past. Some reports indicate the bulk of productive scallop grounds in those areas were in exceptionally deep waters this year. Experts explain that the normal west to easterly storms that drive scallops into easily accessible shallow waters did not occur this year. But wait; News Flash, scallops certainly showed up on the southern end of the state’s scalloping waters. In Pasco County, Fla.—the region aptly known as Florida’s Sports Coast—our editors quickly limited out in 3 feet of water and found these waters to be exceptionally productive at every drop. Whether it was the 25-year harvest closure or favorable currents, Pasco County’s limited open season was a must-dive on Florida’s west coast this year. The 2019 season marked the second year in a row that FWC opened the scallop season for Pasco County, and nature certainly supported the decision. Proving to be an unbeatable destination for bay scallops—as evidenced in fistfuls—Florida’s Sports Coast’s rich scallop beds turned out to be the perfect place to score the tasty saltwater bivalves. It is very exciting to see what Pasco County’s continued seasons have in store. In anticipation of continued growth in popularity with the returned underwater adventure, Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources is concentrating efforts to expand and improve county boat ramps to provide more trailer parking and better launch experiences for both local and out-of-town scallopers. Moving forward, Pasco County’s annual scallop season will start the third Friday in July and last for 10 days. 2019 LIONFISH

CHALLENGE UPDATE

n mid-August, FWC released an update on its 2019 Lionfish Challenge, and the numbers are pretty impressive. Since the event opened with Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day on May 18, 304 people had registered for the challenge and 127 had submitted harvested lionfish (113 recreational, 14 commercial). A total of 15,367 lionfish had been removed from Florida waters. The Lionfish Challenge rewards lionfish harvesters with prizes for their lionfish removals. This year, participants who submit the largest and smallest lionfish may be eligible to receive up to $3,000 in cash prizes thanks to support from sponsors: American Sportfishing Association, Yamaha Motor Company, Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County and National Marine Manufacturers Association. All qualified participants (submission of 25 lionfish or 25 pounds for commercial) will be entered in drawings. he fishing report from northwest Costa Rica is smokin’ hot. The FishingNosara team ran 70 trips in July and was in peak form during the white-hot month of August. The team scored several sweet marlins, backed up with 41 sailfish releases and 104 yellowfin tunas. They were pumped to report that multiple 100-plus-pound yellowfins have been caught recently. These mega-fish come around every summer, but this year the team perfected the tackle and tactics to bring in the biggest of the bunch. These monster yellowfin tuna catches break the Internet every time we post photos. panga Adventurer has the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a big bad attitude to match. This season we added a bottom machine, live tuna tuba and outriggers. In late July, cubera snappers were the headliners of a haul that also included yellowfin and a few roosterfish releases. Capt. Fico on the Explorer has earned his nickname of El Brujo (the witch) by conjuring big fish for his clients. Yellowfin tunas are always a staple this time of year, but a big surprise is the presence of big dorados. Either they are early arriving or lingering from the spring. Adding variety to the filet bag were big red groupers, which are amazing to eat and fun to catch. Some folks plan their Costa Rica fishing trip months in advance, but others walk into the office on a whim and book a trip for that day, as did angler Bradley Goss. Capt. Alex on the Harvester delivered the goods for this Oklahoma angler in the form of a 190-pound yellowfin tuna. The Marlin action was intense on the 32-footers Wanderer and Discoverer. Bob Templeton turned in the performance of a lifetime on July 9; Capt. Carlos reported two marlin releases on the big battleship Discoverer. They scored another amazing blue marlin release on July 10 with angler Michael Bosse and his crew. Then San Antonio angler Jim Jordan got a massive marlin release they scored on July 12. That’s four marlin releases in a three-day span. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. Jacksonville angler David Sohm and his group scored a triple dorado hook-up, with a combined haul of 120 pounds. That’s a lot of mahi filets! Also, angler Mark Wing and his family scored the fish-of-a-lifetime on July 19, with Master Capt. William releasing a blue marlin. HOW TO PICK A HOOK

oday’s anglers are the beneficiaries of great strides made in hook manufacturing over the last few decades. Besides being sharper and stronger than they were in generations past, hooks are now available in a wider range of styles than ever before. But with variety comes the need to choose, and many fishermen are unable to comb through the multitudes of hooks to find the one that best suits their needs. If you are one of those anglers who could use a little guidance when it comes to hook selection, this primer will help you sort through the hook hoopla to find the right hook for the job. The first decision is whether you should be using circle hooks or J-hooks. Circle hooks don’t need the manual hookset that J-hooks require, but they also aren’t very effective on fish that tend to nibble at bait. If you fish for nibblers such as sheepshead, blackfish or bluegills, then circles aren’t for you. There is also the reality that circle hooks tend not to set if the fish sits still after swallowing the bait, so don’t use them unless you are fishing in a current or the fish are in an active mood. J-hooks do a better job on fish that move around less. Shank length is an underrated but critical factor in hook selection. Fish with cavernous mouths—such as largemouth bass and snook—should never be pursued using short-shank hooks. With hook eye and point being nearly in the same plane, the two parts can interfere with each other on the hookset, making them a poor choice for fish that have a gentle curvature to their mouth. These hooks do well on fish with narrow, beak-like mouths, such as tuna and wahoo, but they should be avoided when targeting anything with a wide mouth. Many of these hooks are marketed simply as “live-bait hooks,” but if your target has a big mouth, your hook should not have a short shank. Your hook size should match the bait you are using in a way that is conducive to natural presentation. A giant 10/0 hook won’t get many strikes if your bait is a three-inch shrimp; a 2/0 beak or octopus hook is probably a better match. The hook should be big and strong enough to hook and hold your target fish, but not so big that it inhibits the movement of your bait. Many specialty hooks have features made for specific baits and methods of fishing. Hooks with baitholder barbs are great for holding softer baits such as clams and worms. Hooks with up-turned or down-turned eyes are great if you prefer to snell hooks rather than attach them via a knot above the eye. Pay attention to the design of the hooks you select, because each style was made with a precise goal in mind. Whatever hook you choose, always make sure it is razor sharp before you begin fishing.

hope everyone had a great summer boating and enjoying the quality fishing we are well known for. The conditions for last month were at times brutally hot but, so was the fishing. I really don’t see this changing at all but, actually getting better in some areas. Looking into the crystal ball I see the heat and the slight cooling of the water temps to drive the tarpon into and around the mouth of the St. John’s River. Look for some mullet schools to move out of the river if we get some good rains and wind especially if the wind turns NE for any length of time. This will most likely occur if a small tropical weather pattern shows itself. The bull reds, tarpon, and sharks will make small work of these schools if it does happen. If you can get a net on a hand full peg some on the bottom on the high outgoing tide alive with a stout rod. I like a Ugly Stix 6ft Tiger spinning rod with a Penn Spinfisher 6500 spooled with Spider Wire 65lb Ultra Cast Braid. I use a 3-way swivel rig and a 4 to 5ft leader in 80lb fluorocarbon coupled to a 7/0 Owner Circle hook. This braided line cuts the water with minimum drag and the extra long leader allows the bait to swim freely. Bull reds, tarpon and the occasional shark will grab this rig with a vengeance. Also this month look for our pogie/ menhaden schools to 2 NE FLORIDA

stay out on the areas beaches from the Red Tops to Amelia Island. These are excellent baits for trolling and bottom fishing offshore on the local party grounds from Ponte Vedra to Rabbits Lair. Grab a net full and check the pods for action from reds, sharks, and tarpon as they will feed in this moving buffet and offer many opportunities to bag a few. If the pods are quiet pop offshore and drag a few around on a 40lb wire king rig for kings, sharks, cudas, cobia, tunny, aj’s and sailfish. If the troll bite is slow drop some whole or cut into plugs for snapper, sea bass, sharks, cobia, aj’s, and triggers. The local party ground numbers can be found at the FWC website by going to MYFWC.com and searching for reef spots. It’s fairly easy and it’s separated by county for easy access. This month the big bull reds will start their annual migration into the river to spawn. They can be caught from the big rocks up past the fuel docks west of Blount Island. Crabs, pogies whole and cut, mullet, and fresh cut ladyfish can all be deadly baits. Work the high outgoing tides for best results but, they can be caught on any tide if you know where to look. Just remember these big fish are our breeding stock. Handle them gently and carefully with the knowledge that most of them must be vented to survive. Use heavy tackle to reduce any unnecessary stress and try to get them back into the water quickly. Like us they can’t hold their breath much longer than us. he Ancient City Game Fish Association has been busy this Summer! We had a record breaking Challenge Tournament in June with over 300 registered anglers/boats. In July we celebrated our fishing year with our annual awards banquet. ept has multiple angling options. The bull red fishing along the St. John’s & jetties can be exciting with Reds 30 lbs plus. A standard fish finder rig with cut bait like mullet, pogies, ladyfish, or blue crab can all be good choices. Tide will be specific for the fish you are on. I have caught them on all phases of the tide in years past. Soak the baits on the edges of the St. John’s channel. Use the least amount of weight on 20 lb gear, should be fine. I like an 8/0 sharp J

hook. If I have a savoy Angler, I have used the larger TBS Jig in 2 or 3 oz and hold the rod as if you were fishing slot reds in the creeks,,,, exciting. Next, there is tails in the grass. Tides above 5.5 and an easterly wind, look for reds tailing in the spartina and area marshes. Last of the income is best. Again, tides specific to your flat & area. A weedless soft plastic, or a 7-9 weight fly rod with floating line and weedless shrimp & crab patterns work best. Also, this is usually when mullet start to head south. Depending on weather, this can be the very beginning of the migration. Lipped divers & topwaters can take there share of trout, reds, & many other species. Local area inlets & Jetties can produce. Also areas of interest would be rips around structure or grass lines, holding bait , next to a drop off is even better. Throw up current and work the lures back with the tide. Fish feed into the current. Beach fishing can get exciting with Tarpon, Sharks, and big jacks. Lots of options, get out and enjoy.

When is it going to cool down? It’s hot. That pretty well sums it up. With temperatures in the 90s I am more than ready for fall. September is the last month of extreme heat for north Florida. Fishing for bottom species is good and doesn’t require a 40 mile run. There is tons of bait inshore. Trolling for King

Mackerel, Bonita and Barracuda is pretty well wide open. There will also be the occasional Sail Fish making an appearance. Grouper Amberjack, Cobia Vermillion snapper and other species will be fattening up for the upcoming fall. A good tactic is to catch live cigar minnows for bait using sabiki rigs. I use Light leaders this time of year due to the clearer warmer water. Sixty pound monofilament will get more bites than the typical 100 pound. Match your hook size to your bait. There are advantages to fishing the deeper water from 21 fathoms on out to the 28-fathom break. Red Porgy, Trigger fish and Mutton snapper are more abundant the deeper you go. Look for these 3 species on lower profile ledges and areas of hard bottom. The porgy and Triggers can be caught using the typical double hook setup baited with cut squid. If Mutton snapper are you target use leaders up to 15 ft in length baited with a grunt plug or Spanish sardine. Stay hydrated ,watch the afternoon thunder storm forecast and “Let’s Go Fishing”

The mullet are coming... the mullet are coming... By Tommy Derringer

eptember should be one of your favorite times of the year to get on the water. If it’s not, well, you’re seriously missing out on some of the most productive and exciting fishing Florida has to offer. I’m talking about the mass floods of mullet, both big and small, that we get passing through this time of year. As the water starts cool off up North, the mullet start to head south. I’ve heard quite a few ideas about why the mullet do their thing in the fall. One that seems reasonable is that as the water cools off, the amount of available food for the mullet such as algae and grasses becomes scarce. Thus, the fish push south to find better concentrations of the stuff they like to munch on. Water temperature and the need to get south to spawn are also big factors, I’m sure. Whatever it is that makes them do what they do, let’s hope they keep coming because it definitely makes for some awesome fishing! Let’s talk about a few of my favorite fish and why they tend to shine during the fall mullet run... Tarpon... Even if you don’t want to catch a silver king just watching these giants busting through the schools of mullet is about as cool as it gets. You’ll want to look for the bigger mullet towards the end of the month as they start to show up along the beaches, inlets, and around the bridges. It’s not hard to find the tarpon; just look for the 100lb silver streak flying through the air and crashing into the water like someone tossed a VW bus out of an airplane. All joking aside, you can pretty much bet that there are some poons hanging under just about every pod of large mullet this month. Whether at the inlets, beaches, or bridges, there’s a few different ways to target them. First, make sure you have some beefed-up tackle as there will be a lot of fish upwards of 100lbs. I like to use a 6000-8000 size Shimano spinning reel paired up to an extra heavy Shimano spinning rod. Anything smaller than that won’t allow you to put enough pressure on the fish, which wears them out unnecessarily and could be harmful to them. As for terminal tackle I like to use an 8-10ft, 60-80lb fluorocarbon leader, and a 7-10/0 circle hook depending on bait (mullet or pogy) size. You can simply free-line a mullet back to the edges of the bait school or, and most people don’t try this, you can put a mullet on the bottom on a fish-finder or knocker rig. Just because you see the tarpon feeding up top doesn’t mean they aren’t looking down deep as well. In fact, after talking to some of the best tarpon fisherman in NE Florida the bait

on the bottom trick seems to be the preferred method when fishing around mullet schools. If tossing a lure is your thing, the obvious choice would be something that looks like a mullet. Big sub-surface plugs from Rapala and Mirrolure are popular tarpon lures. I like to toss a big soft plastic like the 5” Die Dapper from Saltwater Assassin on a big swimbait hook. It looks just like a mullet and with a slow steady retrieve the tarpon can’t help themselves. No matter how you do it just don’t forget to bow to the king! Redfish... There is no better time to get out and catch some redfish than during the mullet run. The top-water bite peaks this time of year and the reds will really key in on those baitfish. If watching a big red inhale a top-water plug off the surface doesn’t get you going you might need to check your pulse! The smaller “finger” mullet have already started to invade the flats and creeks all across NE Florida. Finding some hungry redfish can be as easy as finding the bait this time of year. Look for large concentrations of finger mullet along the spartina grass lines on the high tide and then along the ICW banks on the lower tide stage. If it’s early in the morning or late in the afternoon you can bet I’ll have my clients tossing that top-water plug through those schools of mullet. The Rapala Skitterwalks are my go-to but just about any top-water plug that resembles a mullet will work. If you are fishing in the middle of the day, a soft plastic like the Saltwater Assassin Lil Boss paddle tail is a dead match for a finger mullet. I’ll pair that up with a 1/4oz jighead, then it’s just cast and retrieve right through or to the edges of the mullet schools... couldn’t get any easier. Of course, a live finger mullet on a fish-finder rig or jighead is hard to beat, and if the water is murky or the bite is a little slow don’t be afraid to chop that mullet up. A little mullet stink can go a long way on stubborn redfish. The bull reds will be in on the mullet action as well. Last year we had an incredible bull red bite along St. Augustine Beach as the

reds were hanging out under the pods of mullet coming down the beach. In that case, we fished a live mullet under the schools. The inlets will be stacked with bull reds as well, and when you see the tarpon busting through the schools of mullet, guess who will be hanging out underneath picking up the scraps?... umm... redfish, among other things. A big cut piece of mullet can’t be beat on the bottom for those inlet bulls. Flounder... I almost always catch my biggest flounder of the year over the next couple of months. The bigguns will move into the inlets and deeper water docks looking to get in on the mullet run. Big flounder like to eat big mullet so don’t be afraid to size up on your bait if you’re looking to catch a doormat. I’ll sometimes use a 10” mullet at the inlets this time of year to find those big flatties. Just know that you’ll most likely need to use more weight to hold that guy on the bottom. Those big flounder will stack up along the rocks at the St.

A fish-finder rig with a 8-12” leader and enough weight to hold the bottom is my go-to rig. A kahle hook matched in size to your bait has been a flounder favorite for years. Just remember to let the flounder chew for awhile before setting the hook or you’ll be getting back the dreaded scaled mullet with no flounder to be seen. You know, you have to respect all these mullet... can you imagine having to make your way down the coast while being chased by fish, birds, and humans? If a big mullet could tell stories... But actually, I’d rather be the one telling a story about a huge tarpon that ate him off my line!

his is something you’ll want to hear, Grab your fishing gear. The mullet are near, This is the best time of year! Game time is here fellow anglers. The Mullet Run has officially begun. This kind of fishing can be as fast and furious as you make it. The extremes can be from riding up and down A1A with a drone, to find actively feeding fish, to one pole, one bucket, and a cast net. My strategy is somewhere in between. I prefer to go to my favorite beach, somewhere between Micklers and Matanzas, and fish multiple poles using mullet in various ways. Those are live large, live small, chunked large, and small halved. Also two different types of rigs, fish finder aka sinker slider and double drop, with hooks ranging from #1 to 7/0. also includes a cast net with 3/8 mesh, live well, aerator, and lots of pretied rigs for all the toothy fish. Let us start with my over the top live well. Keep in mind you can get by with just an empty 5 gallon bucket. This rig will allow you to fish more and spend less time keeping your bait alive. The key is to keep the mullet cool, with aerated and clean water. Please see the picture below for a reference. A ten gallon water cooler with a hole drilled in the side for air tube. Aerator clipped to the side. A two gallon bucket stored inside to fill and refresh the live well. Dip net so your sunblock does not contaminate the water. All of this fits inside the cooler for easy transport to the beach or pier. Two key tips…do not put too many baits in your cooler, 5 large or 12 small will keep, and pour fresh water in every 30 minutes. Rigs from small to extra heavy. Sinker slider #1 circle, 16” 30lb mono leader, and enough weight to cast and hold, egg sinker 1oz to 4oz. The same rig with 5/0 50lb or 7/0 100lb. With the 7/0 100lb I’m targeting big Reds and Tarpon. I only take one dropper rig this time of year. I tie it with 50lb and use 5/0 circles. One final tip, if you are going to target Tarpon, make sure you have enough line to stop it. We cannot crank the boat and chase it down. I barely stopped my biggest one with 400yds of 30lb mono. eptember is an excellent month when targeting many of the tidal creeks that make up the Nassau, St. Mary’s and Amelia Island River systems. Cooling water temperatures signals a major shrimp spawn in the fertile marshes where game fish including sea trout, flounder and redfish can be found taking advantage of the abundance of forage foods. When conditions are perfect and your backwater skiff is located within casting distance of a fishy creek mouth, expect to enjoy multiple hook-ups! The first of the falling tide offers the best fishing action as when the falling creek waters slack, creek game fish will then relocate into the deeper waters of the main tidal creek. Redfish are the primary targeted game fish weighing from 1-10 pounds offering excellent fighting abilities while bull dogging out into the main river channel when feeling the sting of your saltwater hook. Back country fishermen can also expect to catch sea trout, flounder, striped bass and largemouth bass too.

morning and late evening tides. Casting a ¼-ounce led head jig rigged with a clear curly plastic tail with blue glitter is key for big catches of sea trout measuring to over twenty-inches. Fishing dead on the bottom with live finger mullet is also a great surf fishing tactic, so be sure and bring along a six-foot cast net and live bait bucket. As the water temperatures begin to cool over night during the month of September, many of the freshwater ponds and lakes located on Amelia Island will offer excellent early morning topwater fishing action. The Storm “chug Bug” in the Baby Bass color pattern remains would be my first choice. Offshore fishermen will be targeting gag grouper at FA, HH and FC fish havens while targeting rock ledges. Fish dead on the bottom with live pinfish, mullet, Spanish sardines or menhaden. Black sea bass fishing should also improve with cooling water temperatures while fishing with cut baits, or fresh local squid.

During a past fall fishing adventure to the dark stained waters of the mid Lofton Creek tidal waters, a silver and black #11 floating Rapala produced an eight-pound largemouth bass on my client’s very first cast! “Redfish Magic” spinners are an excellent lure as well fishing targeting early Fall tidal creeks when rigged with a white and chartreuse colored plastic tail. Simply position your fishing boat with an electric motor at the mouth of a falling creek mouth and make casts first to both the left and right points of the creek mouth. Finally cast far back into the creek mouth and work your artificial lure out into the main creek making sure that you keep your rod tip high and not allowing your lure to make contact with the bottom. Once the lure enters the main creek, slow your retrieve and allow your lure to work the deep edges of the creek mouth. Also include “Walker’s Creek”, “Alligator Creek”, “Simpson Creek” and many of the unnamed tidal creeks that feed both the Intra Coastal waterway and the Nassau River located at the southern tip of Amelia Island. Surf fishing at Amelia Island should produce excellent catches of sea trout, whiting, pompano, flounder, bluefish and redfish during the early

Bull reds and a few tarpon will still be hanging around the mouths of the Nassau and St. Mary’s inlets while chum fishing with freshly netted menhaden. The middle of the in-coming tide offers the very best fishing action. Finally, redfish will be tailing in the flooded marshes during a full moon and a good northeast wind. Be sure and arrive at your targeted marsh flat one hour before the tide is scheduled to flood, once the tide begins to fall, be sure and navigate from the marsh in a timely manner as the tide falls with speed!

That kind of gear meant very uncomfortable early season hunting for whitetails when temperatures can spike to over 90 degrees. Just walking to your stand can build up a good sweat and sweat brings odor that can tip the game off to your presence. Results, well, lets agree that in those conditions they are usually not desireable. Doves On A Wire Building your own portable “dove wire,” with decoys, is easy, inexpensive, and it draws birds from long range. By Bob McNally

f you hunt mourning doves, or simply observe them, you undoubtedly know doves have an uncanny affinity for power lines. Telephone and electric lines are choice resting sites for doves. Birds typically land on such wires before descending to the ground to feed, get grit, or water. This is such a widely known dove habit that in most hunting areas where there are power lines, hunting sites around wires are coveted. Power lines are so attractive to doves that many fields owned by hunters have specially-built “utility wires” that serve no other purpose but as an attractant for doves. A wire, complete with tall poles, looks exactly like a telephone line, often extending for hundreds of yards across an otherwise flat field. Except it has no power or telephone hook-ups. It’s put there solely to draw birds when dove season opens. But not everyone can afford to build his own “power line to nowhere” in a dove field. Yet with a bit of effort and for not much money, you can build your own “dove wire” that attracts birds from long range, and it’s easily portable. The components of a portable “dove wire” (all available at most hardware stores) include: a 20-foot long 2-inch diameter PVC pipe; 2 four-inch long, 1/4-inch diameter “eye-bolts” with four suitable lock nuts; 2 five-foot lengths of concrete reinforcement rod (rebar); a 100foot length of dark-color (black best) 1/4-inch rope (nylon good); two tent stakes; one to two dozen plastic drink containers (20-ounce or slightly larger); and a large spray can of flat-gray primer paint, plus a large can of flat-black paint. For tools, you need a saw, a drill with 1/4-inch bit, and a hammer. First step cut the PVC pipe in half, producing two 10-foot sections. This makes the pipe more portable, able to fit inside most SUVs and

pickups, and many hardware stores will cut the pipe for easy transport. Next completely spray the outside of the PVC pipes with flat-black paint, and let dry. Remove labels from plastic drink containers, and drill one hole sideways completely through them with a 1/4-inch bit. Just an inch or so down from the cap is a good spot to drill through. Thread drink containers onto the rope. They should slide on snug. You don’t want them to move too easily along the rope. Space them irregularly at various spots along the rope, leaving about 15 feet of bare rope at each end without drink containers. You can spray the drink containers with flat-gray primer paint now, but it’s easier when they’re suspended above the ground on the “dove wire.” When the PVC pipes dry from painting, drill one 1/4-inch hole through each pipe, about 4-inches from an end. Thread one lock-nut onto the eye-bolt, and spin it far back on the threads. Now put the eye-bolt through the PVC hole, and secure it in place with another lock-nut. The eye-bolt should be sturdy and secure, capable of holding the rope with plastic “decoys.” Do this to both PVC pipes. Practice setting up the dove wire at home in your back yard, a nearby field, park or other open space. It’s much faster with another person’s help. Take one of the 5-foot lengths of steel rod and drive it well into the

ground with a hammer. A foot or two deep is good. Thread one end of the rope through a PVC eye-bolt, pull it through six or eight feet, then slide the opposite end of the PVC pole over the rebar rod, so the pole is standing upright. Several feet from the vertical PVC pole drive one tent stake into the ground, and secure the end of the rope to the tent stake. Lay the rope with plastic decoys on the ground in a line leading away from the vertical PVC pipe. This should extend about 70 feet or so. At that spot drive the second steel rod into the ground. Thread the remaining end of the rope through the second PVC pipe eye-bolt, and while holding the rope end, slide the opposite end of the PVC pipe over the rod so it’s standing upright on the rebar, eyebolt at the top. Pull slowly and firmly on the rope end so the decoys rise and are suspended between the poles. Step several feet away from the second PVC pipe, drive the second tent stake into the ground, and secure the “dove wire” to it. Adjust decoys by sliding them along the rope, so they look like real doves on a wire. You can add a few oversize plastic bottle decoys on the ground under the wire for more realism (see sidebar). Attaching a few commercially-made plastic dove decoys is okay, too. The whole thing goes up in a few minutes, and comes down even faster. In fields you regularly hunt, a “dove wire” can be left disassembled along a woods line or ditch, then set-up when needed. This eliminates the need for transporting the components every time to a hunting site. Taller and longer “dove wires” are easy to make, too. You can use two, 100-foot lengths of rope tied together, utilizing three poles. For a taller “wire” set-up, use two 20-foot lengths of PVC, and 3-inch diameter pipes to make it more sturdy. Transporting such long pipe can be difficult in hunting vehicles, however. But pipe can be cut into 10-foot sections, then glue threaded PVC connectors to the ends. This makes it easy to transport pipe, then at the hunting site pipe can be threaded together forming 20-foot tall “poles,” which gets decoys high where they’re easily seen by incoming doves from long range.

Doves, like ducks and geese, have no perception of size. So it makes sense to use large decoys to get attention from distant doves, just like duck and goose hunters who employ “magnum” dekes for waterfowl. Commercially-made dove decoys are not available in oversize versions, but it’s easy to make your own at minimal cost. Simply gather some used, large plastic bottles, like 1/2-gallon milk jugs or empty 2-liter soft-drink containers. Doesn’t matter the brand, nor the color plastic, but keep the lids on. Remove the plastic or paper bottle labels, then spray containers with flat-gray primer paint. Give them a good coating, which sometimes must be done twice. You’ll need a dozen bottles, and tote them in a standard waterfowl decoy sack. When you get to your dove hunting spot (field or water hole) simply toss decoy bottles around on the ground, laying on their sides. If used with an overhead “dove wire,” scatter large bottles under and around the wire -simulating doves that have landed, after having first alighted on the wire. Oversize bottles attract doves from long distances, and are best for ground use (rather than on a dove wire), because they are heavier and more wind resistant than smaller plastic bottles.

hrimpin' has been hot, as has the Summer temps. Largemouth should be schooling and under docks looking for a nice meal. Baits of choice would be shiners, shrimp and/or plastics. Carolina rigs on the drops and points and the live bait around and under docks. Bream will be wanting to ambush baits, so around docks and in creek pads. Baits of choice are fly poppers, crickets or wigglers. Just go for it. Catfish in the evening should be really good. Fishing of the mullet wall isn't a bad idea. There's a lot of food being thrown all day, so the area is ready for the bottom feeders, especially after dark. Less crowded and probably more activity. Baits of choice: night crawlers, bait shrimp, beef liver or chicken liver. So just get it and go!

Mullet fish should be off the charts. Big, lots, and should be starting to roe up. Baits needed--chum, wigglers, white bait and multi-hook rigs. So grab some and go. But keep in mind, it's busy, busy, busy; especially on the week-ends. So go early, get your limit and call it a day. Croakers have been and should be getting bigger and more plentiful. You'll start at the mile marker "18" and keep jumping holes and deep drops til you find them. All you need for these is some bait shrimp and night crawlers. You'll catch them, so get some bait and do it. Yellow mouth should be sharing the same places as the croaker. Best bet is strips of small croaker. It's like fish crack to these guys, so go to it. Reds should be around and wanting a nice piece of crab or a bit of bait shrimp. Start in the shallower locals early and as it gets brighter, go deeper to the drops and channels. Don't spend huge blocks of time. If they're in your area, you should now within a half hour or so. If no luck, move on. Just keep at it, 'til you locate them. Then have some fun. Striper/ hybrids will be wanting to ambush your bait around the pilings of the Shands Bridge. Remember, fish with a moving tide, let that bait drift past a piling and hold on. You should do well. Baits of choice are shiners, bait shrimp or lures. Minnow imitations or lipless crank bait will do the job. W"ell, 'til next time, keep your line wet and your lure movin'.--Richard

Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Inshore By Capt. Tommy Derringer

t’s been a long hot Summer but… Fall and (hopefully) some cooler weather should be on the way. How do you beat the lingering heat… Get out at first light or wait for the last few hours of daylight, right around dusk. Those are typically the best times to catch the fish while they’re feeding this time of year. It’s a great time of year to toss top-water plugs inshore during those lower light conditions and along the beach the tarpon will be feeding early and late as well. One thing you absolutely have to look for to find the fish this time of year is the bait, especially the finger mullet, and it has been getting thicker by the day. Whether it’s finger mullet, shrimp, or pogys, if you find the bait, you’ll find the fish. The bait can be easily located by looking for nervous water (small disruptions on the surface, similar to a very small boat wake). You can be sure that redfish, trout, and flounder will be hanging around the schools of bait looking for an easy meal. Don’t overlook the banks along the ICW on the lower tide stages this month. A lot of the baitfish will come out of the creeks and hang along those ICW banks, especially the ones that have oysters scattered on them. Again the bigger fish will be in close pursuit. Get ready for the “floods”! September brings one of the most unique and exciting ways to catch redfish on the First Coast. We will have some

great “flood” tides this month and the reds will be up in the grass tailing away. You can use a trolling motor to scout out the best grass flats but wading or poling your boat is usually the most effective way to catch the tailing reds. Start looking for the fish before the tide gets too high (usually at least an hour or two before the high tide depending on how high it will get). Small plastic baits like those made by Saltwater Assassin will work great in the grass. Rig your lure weedless on a Saltwater Assassin hook and try to present it well in front of or past the fish and then slowly drag it towards him. A direct hit to a tailing red will usually send him darting off the flat like an out of control torpedo. Sometimes they are so focused on finding food that they seem to never look up to find your lure. That’s when a small glass rattle inserted into your soft plastic or tied to your favorite fly will do wonders to get their attention. Don’t give up on the tarpon just yet... the silver kings should still be feeding early in the morning on the bait pods just off the beach as well as on the big schools of mullet at all the area inlets. Free-line a pogy or mullet around the bait pods and hold on. You’ll also find some big tarpon behind the shrimp boats in the by-catch slicks. If the tarpon don’t want to play, do some trolling along the beach for some line-screaming kingfish action (there will be plenty of them out there). There will also be plenty of smaller tarpon inshore in the canals and deeper creeks and flats. A back hooked free-lined finger mullet, a free lined select shrimp, or medium sized pogy, will all make for a great tarpon snack. Capt. Tommy Derringer 904-377-3734 • www.InshoreAdventures.net

Fishing Report & Forecast Flagler Inshore By Captain Chris Herrera

eptember marks the autumn bait movement that will eventually turn into the fall “mullet run” by months end. Starting your mornings off with topwater lures that resemble a mullet like the Rapala skitter walk or Spook Jr. will produce redfish,trout and snook. Cast topwaters parallel to ICW banks, over flooded oyster beds or docks that are holding mullet to find the “trophies”. September’s full and new moons brings the tidal waters up into the Spartina grass where Redfish and Sheephead will be found tailing and gorging themselves on all sorts of crustaceans. Bailing from the skiff and wading with the fly rod and a rattle crab pattern is one way to hook up or a live shrimp hooked through the tail with a Daiichi Octopus wide bait hook. Snook and Tarpon will be in the canals feeding during low light conditions, a live select shrimp will trigger a bite from both species. Lead a rolling Tarpon with a live select shrimp on a Daiichi 3/0 circle hook and a loose drag to help your chances of landing the Silver King. Pitching the docks with live shrimp will get the attention of most linesiders (Snook) especially when encountering

a school and the competition factor kicks in. Remember to handle snook with care as they have had a few rough winters and snook numbers are still low. Area inlets will host Flounder and Bull Reds during the change of tides, a live 6-inch mullet on a fish finder rig will get the doormats to the boat. The fish finder rig consists of a 1/0-3/0 DaiichiD18Z hook with a 10-inch piece of 30lb fluorocarbon leader, a good swivel, glass bead and ¾-1 ounce egg sinker. Once you cast this rig, slowly drag and pump it back to the boat keeping contact with the bottom. For creek flounder a mud minnow or finger mullet on a ¼ ounce Slayer inc. Destroyer jig head fished around creek bends. A knocker rig with a 6-ounce weight a Daiichi 5/0 circle hook and cut or live mullet/ pogie will be the choice set up for Bull Reds at the inlet. Just remember take time to revive these breeder reds and get them back in the water as quickly as possible. Trout catches can still be expected to be best at night fishing the dock lights, a live free lined shrimp or non weighted artificial tossed up current and drifted through the lights will produce Trout and Snook. Remember to wet hands before handling fish if you plan on doing some catch and release. .

ot summer days aren’t over for Northeast Florida but one of the best ways to beat the heat is to hop on the boat and go fishing. This summer fishing in Northeast Florida has been steady and strong with something to target anytime you can go fishing. If you’re interested in Summertime BillFishing the best bet for September and October is the Swordfish and this season is already producing fantastic catches for those who make the effort. In July - A 376 pound swordfish weighed in at the Marlin Club Dock by the “Family Time”, Bryan and Mark Denman and family were daytime sword fishing when they captured their trophy! Other big fish weighed in by the “C Fan” and the “Freespool” suggest that the big fish arrived early in NE Florida and its expected to be a long swordfish season. By Capt. Randy Cnota his year, anglers heading out of C-Quarters Marina in Carrabelle, Fla.—in quest of the winning kingfish—were blessed with some beautiful weather and light seas. Afternoon winds whipped up some waves, but it was a welcome relief to the heat. While the weather was cooperative, most teams found the bite to be a bit tough… at least for the bigger kings.

Capt. Page Pitman, of Crawfordville, Fla., steered his winning team “Bill Collector” to a second victory in three years by concentrating efforts, again, on finding the right live bait and presenting it with a slow bump-trolling method. Jessica Welch hauled in their winning catch, a 37.4-pound king to secure both the team’s win and this year’s Lady Angler title. Capt. Pitman said this win was very special to him. In the 2017 Shootout, his son Gage hauled in the winning fish for the team. A few months later, tragedy struck and Gage passed away. Winning the tournament this year without Gage by his side was a bitter-sweet reminder of better times fishing with his son. This kind of tragedy should make us all take pause and reflect on how very special each moment with friends and family really is. Jada Bedford, fishing with Team Freedom Creek, hauled in a 28-pound king to secure Youth Angler honors and a fourth-place finish for her team. Before Justin Cahoon left the event, he hitched a new Nautic Star bay boat to his truck after winning it in the raffle. Not a bad return on his $100 investment. This event raised $43,520 for the Leukemia Research Foundation, bringing the total amount raised to a whopping $1,043,645 to date! The foundation has made great strides toward treating blood cancers. A new treatment called CAR T-cell therapy has been approved by the FDA, and Medicare has come on board to help cover this expensive gene therapy. CAR T-cell is proving to be very effective in blood cancers. It involves removing genes from the body, re-engineering them and returning them to the patient. Kevin Radelet, the foundation’s executive director described it as a game of Pac Man going on inside the patient where the re-engineered genes attack the cancer. This is great news, and it’s a direct result of the efforts of everyone that conducts, supports and participates in this event and others like it. Come out to compete, spectate or help support this event in any way you can. You’ll be glad you did. Next year’s event will be held Aug. 1-2, so come on out and let’s go fishing for a cure! It’s a great time, a great cause and it all happens in a beautiful place.

Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag

or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head. n the history of timepieces, few moments are more important than the creation of the world’s first Piezo timepiece.
