Upper Class Just Got Lower Priced Finally, luxury built for value— not for false status
U
ntil Stauer came along, you needed an inheritance to buy a timepiece with class and refinement. Not any more. The Stauer Magnificat II embodies the impeccable quality and engineering once found only in the watch collections of the idle rich. Today, it can be on your wrist. The Magnificat II has the kind of thoughtful design that harkens back to those rare, 150-year-old moon phases that once could only be found under glass in a collector’s trophy room. Powered by 27 jewels, the Magnificat II is wound by the movement of your body. An exhibition back reveals the genius of the engineering and lets you witness the automatic rotor that enables you to wind the watch with a simple flick of your wrist. It took three years of development and $26 million in advanced Swiss-built watch-making machinery to create the Magnificat II. When we took the watch to renowned watchmaker and watch historian George Thomas, he disassembled it and studied the escapement, balance wheel and the rotor. He remarked on the detailed guilloche face, gilt winding crown, and the crocodile-embossed leather band. He was intrigued by the three interior dials for day, date, and 24-hour moon phases. He estimated that this fine timepiece would cost over $2,500. We all smiled and told him that the Stauer price was less than $100. A truly magnificent watch at a truly magnificent price! Try the Magnificat II for 30 days and if you are not receiving compliments, please return the watch for a full refund of the purchase price. The precision-built movement carries a 2 year warranty against defect. If you trust your own good taste, the Magnificat II is built for you.

n the blockbuster film, when a strapping Australian crocodile hunter and a lovely American journalist were getting robbed at knife point by a couple of young thugs in New York, the tough Aussie pulls out his dagger and says “That’s not a knife, THIS is a knife!” Of course, the thugs scattered and he continued on to win the reporter’s heart. Our Aussie friend would approve of our rendition of his “knife.” Forged of high grade 420 surgical stainless steel, this knife is an impressive 16" from pommel to point. And, the blade is full tang, meaning it runs the entirety of the knife, even though part of it is under wraps in the natural bone and wood handle. Secured in a tooled leather sheath, this is one impressive knife, with an equally impressive price. This fusion of substance and style can garner a high price tag out in the marketplace. In fact, we found full tang, stainless steel blades with bone handles in excess of $2,000. Well, that won’t cut it around here. We have mastered the hunt for the best deal, and in turn pass the spoils on to our customers. But we don’t stop there. While supplies last, we’ll include a pair of $99, 8x21 power compact binoculars, and a genuine leather sheath FREE when you purchase the Down Under Bowie Knife. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. IS
ISTIOPHORUS: THE MYSTERIOUS SAILFISH
By Capt. Quinlyn Haddon
T
he sailfish is one of the most commonly caught billfish. Due to its proclivity for shallower coastal waters and frequency of ascension to the surface, the odds of catching one of these beauties can be much greater than for other billfish. There is little scientific certainty about the mysterious behavior of sailfish. They exhibit a general migratory pattern throughout the year, but they often break their own rules and show up unexpectedly. Summer sailfish catches are generally more associated with the Gulf of Mexico, yet they do appear on the Atlantic coast this time of year, as well. Sailfishing in the Florida Keys is usually a late autumn and early spring
bite. It can be an absolute catching frenzy. However, in July, following the passage of tropical storm Elsa, sailfish were seen tailing at the surface, cruising the waves along a strong current line off of Marathon Key. It was a bizarre and welcomed phenomenon. The conditions that followed the storm created a concise current line, with greener nearshore waters touching the blue water, and a milky powder-blue highway running down the center. Sailfish were spotted swimming east to west at the top of the waves, and seemed to dive deeper to circle back. The locals are no strangers to this phenomenon that occurs in the Keys. Though the time of year may be unpredictable, anglers are always ready to make the most of it. This type of fishing requires polarized sunglasses and a tower boat. Slowly creeping through the powder blue highway, scan the waves for black torpedo shapes or blobs that resemble black garbage bags. Hunt for the opportunity to sight cast live baits. Without the visual vantage of a tower, trolling lures or bump trolling live bait may be more productive than trying to spot them from deck level. Sailfish truly are an incredible and unpredictable species. Very few have been successfully tagged, and few have held a tag long enough to transmit much information. Of those tagged for up to a year, their patterns were generally erratic. They seem to be extremely transient, foraging and spawning in many different coastal regions, predictably unpredictable, like majestic aquatic gypsies. Commonalities in their behavior are that they primarily stay within a water temperature of approximately 80 degrees; they mostly stay near the surface, rarely diving below 300 feet; and they exhibit extremely curious evening routines. All of the transmissions showed sailfish spending the evening within 30 feet of the surface, descending briefly before sunrise and sunset. They were also observed to be active nightly, seemingly unaffected by lunar phases. Help uncover the mysteries of sailfish by reporting tagged fish or by visiting billfish.org to purchase a tagging kit. Remember to handle sailfish with care and revive them before release when necessary. Capt. Quinlyn Haddon fishes with Blue Magic Charters out of Marathon, Fla. The Biggest Event In Silver Dollar History!
he American Silver Eagle has been the most popular silver coin on the planet since its introduction in 1986. Its beautiful, iconic design inspires collectors, and investors love it because it’s struck in one full ounce of 99.9% fine silver, and guaranteed for weight and fineness by the U.S. Government. Now in 2021, for the first time ever, the coin’s design is changing.
The Most Important Coins in the Modern Era
When President Ronald Reagan signed the Liberty Coin Act into law, he didn’t know American Eagles would have the impact they’ve had, year after year. The coins were so popular that between 1986 and 2020, over 535 million were struck. That’s more than HALF A BILLION coins, easily making Silver Eagles the most bought coins in the world. Hugely popular now, Silver Eagles may soon become even more popular!
Collectors Crave Firsts
Collectors covet coins with Key Dates. Key Dates mark significance in a coin’s history...firsts, lasts, lowest mintage,
new finishes and new designs. Now, for the first time in over three-and-a-half decades, the Silver Eagle is getting a new design, leading to a historic “first” unlike anything we’ve seen. The iconic Heraldic Eagle reverse is being replaced by a beautiful new “Eagle Landing” design. This is arguably a bigger deal than even the actual introduction of the coin because there’s so much more interest now than in 1986, with investors and collectors!
If You Knew Then What You Know Now...
If you’d had a crystal ball in 1986, you undoubtedly would have grabbed every Silver Eagle you could get. Those coins in uncirculated condition continue to be sought-after. Now you’re getting another chance to land a big Silver Eagle first, a Key Date. Additionally, since these newly designed Silver Eagles are only being released during the second half of 2021, it’s quite possible this will be one of the lowest mintages we’ve seen. That’s significant because it could make 2021 a DOUBLE Key Date, with both a new design and a low mintage. Demand for these coins is already sky-high, but if that
happens, watch out! No one can predict the future value of silver, but many Americans are rushing to stock up, for themselves, and their loved ones.

DADDYghter u a DOFF DAYS VIRGINIA BEACH
F
By Nick Carter
or Matt Metelsky, daddy-daughter time with his 17-year-old is a little more involved than a trip to the ice cream parlor. Matt’s daughter Lily is a rising high school senior. She loves nothing more than waking up at 2 a.m. to run 85 miles off Virginia Beach and troll the edge of the Continental Shelf with her dad. In late June, the duo fished the Virginia Beach Tuna Tournament, where Lily placed second in the Lady Angler division with a yellowfin that weighed 39.9 pounds. But that’s not her biggest tuna to-date. Her heaviest yellowfin weighed 44 pounds. She caught it last summer, and at 5-foot-4 and 115 pounds, it took her about 15 minutes to haul it in stand-up with a belt. “I don’t know. We do wood work on the side, so we load wood, and I guess that gives you some back strength,” Lily offered as explanation for feats of fishing strength. “We always stay active. With Dad, it’s work hard, play harder.” Lily’s strength and stamina are a given considering she qualified and is working as an oceanfront lifeguard at Virginia Beach this summer. Matt, however, has another explanation for his daughter’s skill, as well as her love for this hard-core style of fishing. Lily was 5 years old when Matt purchased his Contender 25 with twin 150s. At a tender age, Lily cut her teeth going toe-to-toe with hard-pulling spadefish in 50 feet of water, 20 miles offshore. “I’m thinking the technique she picked up with those spades when she was little just kind of morphed over into the tuna,” Matt said. “It really amazes
me she is able to battle those things stand-up.” Lily began joining Matt for long days offshore when she turned 13. She was 15 the summer of 2019 when she was first physically able to handle a yellowfin—a 26-pounder—by herself. But pumping and reeling aren’t Lily’s only deck duties. She helps rig and bait and steers the boat while her dad deploys an eight-rod spread on the Gulf Stream. Last Jan. 11, she manned the helm while Matt battled a 550-pound bluefin. When the handle on the 50w reel broke under the stress, it was Lily’s idea to improvise with a screwdriver and electrical tape to eventually land that fish. The peak yellowfin season is June and July out of Rudee Inlet. Matt and Lily make five or six trips a summer, often with friends. Normal days consist of two or three tuna, some bonita and mahi, and occasionally a white marlin. Two or three times a year, January and February bluefin trips are just for the two of them. There aren’t many people interested in waiting on one big bite in brutal mid-winter conditions, anyway. “She’s just tough as nails,” Matt said of his daughter. “I don’t know how else to describe it. She’s just tough.” Lily doesn’t seem to perceive any hardship. She considers herself lucky to be able to spend time with her dad on the water. “When we’re out there on the boat, it’s just so peaceful,” she said. “I pretty much sleep the whole time. When that reel goes off, that’s my alarm.” For more action from Virginia Beach, visit coastalanglermag.com/tidewater-obx/.

A gemstone 10,000 times rarer than diamonds
So rare, you can only find it one place on earth. Two, if you count Stauer! Over 7 carats of ethereal Larimar— From a remote Caribbean mountain
T
he rarity of larimar is legendary. Its exquisite beauty, unique color and scarcity make it a truly treasured gem. Found in only one square kilometer of the world, the ONLY source of larimar lies in the relatively inaccessible Bahoruco’s mountains in the Caribbean. Formed by unique combination of volcanic minerals and geological conditions, larimar is very dangerous to get to and therefore is only mined 5 months out of the year. Because of its rarity, few people have ever seen larimar, and it is only recently that the Caribbean yielded its secret to us. But luckily, the prices are not controlled by a syndicate so this rare stone is still affordable, as long as you know where to look. And, you’ve come to the right place, we are your ticket to paradise. We’ve crafted rare larimar into remarkable jewelry that’s also remarkably affordable. Each stone in our Sea of Love Larimar Collection is a picture of perfect swirling blue. Nature guarantees that no two larimar gemstones will be exactly alike, each has a wispy white swirl that looks like the highest clouds on a sun-filled day. You could spend PRAISE FOR STAUER LARIMAR RINGS well over $1,000 “There are not enough adjectives in for a larimar ring the dictionary to describe the beauty set in sterling silver. and excellence of this ring. BAY COUNTY’S
A
t the mid-point of the Florida Panhandle, St. Andrew Bay dominates the map of Bay County, flanking Panama City on three sides. It’s a 107-square-mile inshore playground that bustles with all sorts of watersports during the heavy tourism months. But there’s a quieter side to St. Andrew. With access points spread throughout Bay County, skinny water is where it’s at for redfish anglers. The water is clear and maintains predictably high salinity thanks to limited freshwater inflow. There are vast prairies of spartina grass, cut through with channels, as well as acres of sand, mud and grass flats. Much of it is accessible only to shallow-draft vessels, and therein is the allure for folks seeking respite 2 FLORIDA

When you’re in less than 2 feet of water, the only other boats you’ll see are kayaks, paddleboards and flats skiffs. “I fell in love with inshore fishing and kayaking here because of the ease and lower expense,” said Josh Damon, who hails from Fountain, Fla., about 25 miles north of Panama City. “I enjoy the tranquility and access to areas big boats can’t reach.” The fishing is good, too. Damon is a passionate angler who enjoys inshore tournaments, so he specializes in redfish on artificials. He said a good day might results in five or six reds from 18 to 24 inches, with a few trout or flounder thrown into a mixed bag. He fishes from a paddle-powered kayak, which is perfectly at home in the one-and-a-half-foot depths he prefers. Redfish are comfortable and free from predatory threats in extreme shallows, and it’s also where the food is. St. Andrew reds grow fat on mullet, mud minnows, pinfish and a variety of other little baitfish. With good visibility, sight fishing is a good tactic. This time of year, there’s usually a good topwater bite in the mornings and evenings, and walking baits are a favorite of many anglers. Damon, however, fishes soft plastics almost exclusively. With tackle modifications, they can be worked across the top, bounced on the bottom or fished anywhere in between. They’re delicate enough for sight casting and also make great chunk-and-wind search baits. “Aside from the versatility of a soft-plastic bait, I don’t want a fish flopping around in the kayak with six hooks,” Damon said. At St. Andrew, Damon’s go-to lure is a 4-inch D.O.A. C.A.L. Shad Tail rigged on a 1/8-ounce 4/0 Screw Lock jig head. He likes the Houdini color and dresses it with Kings Stank Stick, a scent product he said increases hookups. He fishes variations of this set-up, but this basic rig gets the job done. For safety reasons as well effective fishing, planning is key. Damon studies wind and tide before selecting a put-in on a given day. With the whole bay to choose from, he’s looking for a location that will provide long drifts over productive water. Follow Josh Damon’s adventures on his Facebook page Josh Damon’s Inshore Fishing. IN THE
STILL OF THE NIGHT By Capt. Michael Okruhlik
W
ith the dog days upon us, night fishing can be productive and much more comfortable than slogging it out during the heat of the day. Many fish feed aggressively in the still of the night. They can be
targeted by anglers in multiple ways in different locations. Here are a few options to try. I’ve utilized all three methods and found success with each. • Perhaps the coolest strategy is wade fishing in the dark. Large trout and redfish move unbelievably shallow under the cover of the night sky, and tossing a topwater plug on the flats can result in exciting explosions. I typically wade in the dark without lights, other than a headlamp for changing lures or unhooking fish. With vision impaired, your sense of hearing is on high alert. Nighttime is quiet on the water, which makes the commotion of a topwater take startling. It can give the impression that a fish is larger than it really is. That’s part of the excitement of a topwater bite! For safety reasons, I only wade at night in areas I know well and have fished many times. • Another way to beat the heat is to focus on dock lights. This can be done from the dock, a kayak or a boat. Many canal homes have lights, both under water and above the surface. Lights attract baitfish, which in-turn attract the gamefish we target. Trout, reds and snook are all drawn to baitfish around lights at night. I like to target these areas with smaller lures. In this situation, I’ve had a lot of success throwing my Knockin Tail Lures, which are soft-plastic paddletails with a built-in rattle. Small, lipped hard baits can also be very productive around canal lights. I prefer natural colors, with some shade of white or clear and some silver mixed in. • Fish also feed around rock jetties at night. The setup for this bite requires a little more work, but it can yield terrific results. When jetty fishing, I bring a generator and two 1,500 watt stage lights. These areas typically have more current, so I fish slightly larger lipped hard lures, but I still go with the smallest lure I can work properly in the current. I stick with the same color pattern as mentioned earlier. The channel and surf side of the rocks can both be productive depending on the tide, water clarity and bait presence. I recommend pointing one light in each direction until you determine which areas have the best conditions. Night fishing definitely brings new challenges, but it can offer some of the best catching of the summer. Remember, safety first and don’t fish alone. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Knockin Tail Lures, Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

SCALLOPING
Reports Look Mighty Good
R
By CAM Staff
eports from a few of the historic scalloping hotspots indicated a very good beginning to the season. Capt. Katie Jo Davis, of KD Outdoors Fishing Charters, said scalloping out of Crystal River and Homosassa has been great. “It’s been fantastic. It’s been a lot better year than the last few to be sure,” she said. “They have also been larger than in recent years. The quantity and quality are very good, and I expect it to continue into August and September.” Davis said they are finding scallops six and seven at a time in 2 to 6 feet of water. She took her 6-year-old out, and it took them about an hour to get their 2-gallon limit. Up in Steinhatchee, there are reports of plentiful scallops. Headed north out of the river, scallopers are seeing tons of scallops in 6- to 7-foot depths. The bottom is loaded with them, but they are on the small side. Headed south, scallops are running larger, but there are not as many. Either way, quick limits are being reported. With the bulk of the season still ahead for most of the scalloping zones and Gulf County opening up this month, it’s shaping up to be a mighty good year for scallops. Fishing Report & Forecast Mayport By Capt. Kirk Waltz

efore the ink dries on this report it is with great hope that we have begun to get some normal summer winds. July began continued strong Southwest/Southeast winds for almost 4 weeks strait. This strong flow gave us incredibly rough water which with patches of normal ocean swells in between. This rough water just made it a bit tough at times. Bait is important to acquire if you want to catch some bottom fish or striking fish and bait at times has been sketchy. Look for greenies to take up residency on the ends of the jetties both North and South. Use a number 6 or 8 Sabiki rig to jig a few dozen off the rocks for a morning of fishing. The beaches can still hold some kings, tunny, and sharks so try the SE Hole, Red Tops, Nassau Sound, or Chum Hole spots for striking fish. If this proves futile move off deeper until you acquire some warmer clear water and try the party grounds. MR, RL, Jax Wreck, 9 Mile, PM, PG or any of the other spots will hold striking fish. Try these and you can catch a mess of kings, sharks, cudas, cobia, and AJ’s. Drop a few cut or live
baits on the bottom at the party grounds I just mentioned for snapper, sea bass, trigger fish, and grouper. Look at your bottom recorder to see if clouds of bait are present. If so drop a Sabiki rig down for cigar minnows or sardines to use for bait. Match the hatch! The Inlet at the big rocks will have bull reds, sharks, and tarpon around. Fish the last of the falling tide adjacent to the rocks on the bottom with big live baits like mullet or greenies for good action. Also try cut or whole blue crabs too! This is also the beginning of our bull red spawn. Typically if the stars all line up and everything follows a normal pattern the first full moon of August brings them in till early to late October. Whole blue crab, cut ladyfish, mullet, or pogies if you can get them work great. Fish from the Coast Guard base all the way down the river past Mill Cove for good action on the edges of the big river for good results. Remember these are our breeders and must be released so bring a venting tool. Take care to release these great fighters safely back in the water. With the heat of the summer the ICW both north and south should slow down but, can produce. Fish real early or late with mud minnows or shrimp on a ¼ oz jig for good results. A top water lure like a Bomber Long A, Mirror Lure floater, or a Shimano top water work well for good action. Reds, trout, ladyfish, small jacks, and flounder are still around. Remember you can’t catch them from the couch. Listen to the Outdoors Show each Saturday morning and get the areas fishing reports, tides, and weather on 1010am or 92.5fm from 7am to 10am. ugust will calm things down a little with tournaments and we will get back to our normal club schedule. As far as. July went I guess we will call ourselves lucky for the tiny snapper season that we had. The seas outside of 20nm for a little sporty that Saturday but most people were still able to make it work. A few members got skunked a day or two but most were able to safely get offshore and put some fish in the freezer or straight onto the grill. The kingfish are still on the beach and also on our reefs and wrecks offshore. We have had a few members reporting some keeper sea bass inside of 15 miles but they have been weeding through quite a bit of small ones to get the keepers. A fair handful of cobia have also been pulled off the wrecks in July. The B-liners have been good but I’m finding the triggers have not been huge. It is probably best to look for them deeper than 100’. You should expect to keep seeing kingfish for a little while longer and make sure
when you are on the beach to watch for tarpon in the pogie pods. My baits of choice for bottom fishing have been cuttlefish or squid using a double dropper loop and got the kings and tarpon pogie seem to be doing the trick. We hope to see you are the clubhouse soon. We are excited about some of our plans and speakers coming up. Bring your friends and family for a night of food, fun, and learning. Fishing Report & Forecast Flagler Inshore By Captain Chris Herrera

ugust is a great month to hit the beach and target the usual suspect’s tarpon, kingfish, sharks and jacks. Look for shrimp boats to dump their by catch and get ready to hook into various species of sharks using 7/0 Daiichi circle hooks and a minimum of 80lb. test leaders. Once the sharks get their fill look for the tarpon to
move in to finish off what the sharks didn’t. A tarpon’s favorite meal seems to be the trout dumped by the shrimp boats, float one in the mix of chum and hold on. Best set up for tarpon is a 6/0 live bait hook with 80-100lb. 6ft. leader. Look for Schools of jacks pushing water on calm days in 30-55ft. of water, a well place fly or live bait is a sure hook up as jacks are ferocious eaters. Make sure you don’t use inshore tackle because these are not your typical inshore jacks. Ocean running jacks push weights up to 40lbs. so gear up properly or be prepared to get spooled. Inshore Jacks can be found cruising the ICW at first light heading north busting bait. These fish move at a fast paste so keep that motor running and keep up. The inshore bite continues at first light tossing your favorite topwater lure along grass banks at high tide or along sandbar edges at low tide. During low tides look for schools of reds to gather in the deepest parts of the flat possibly mixed in with the mullet, a live mud minnow on a Daiichi 2/0 circle hook and bb split shot will get the job done. Live bait fisherman can also target redfish around oyster beds and grass edges using a live shrimp and popping cork to get their attention. ICW banks are holding some nice trout when the current is moving and bait is present. Free lining a live shrimp is hard to beat but for the artificial fisherman a Z-man Paddle Tail and Slayer 1/8 ounce jig head jigged off the bottom will put specks in the boat.. Capt. Fishing Report St. Johns River By: Richard Hamilton

ell, let's start with the unusual bream fishing. These tasty beauties have been going great guns. Fly rod poppers, crickets or worms. In the creeks, in the pads and under docks. There isn't a bad way to catch them. All that's needed is time, bait and the ability to enjoy the day.
Mullet fishing is going full bore. All that's required is some chum, bait and the ability to hook them. Mullet are similar to sheephead. You set the hook when you think there's a bite. Accessory items needed: worms, floats, weight and the desire to catch them. Red fish are all over the river. You almost have to hide your bait, the bites have been so strong. Baits of choice are crabs, smaller croaker or shiners, bait shrimp and even nightcrawlers. They're running the grasslines for all the food they can grab and then sliding off into deeper water to relax and wait on a meal. Size of these fish has been from big to little. Remember a 16" fish will be 17" to 18" by October, so toss them back and wait for them
to grow up. Largemouth will be under docks and in cover avoiding the sun and heat and waiting for that meal to come by. Baits can vary from shiners or shrimp to topwater pre-sun to crankbaits and plastic during the sunny day. Casting a large local live shrimp with a popping cork under docks in Doctors inlet can be very fun this time of year. I love dock fishing now. You'll never know what's under there unless you get it to the net. Could be a little buck bass or a bad red. Never knowing and then catching is the funniest thing to do. Catfish at night is okay, fine. Baits of choice are nightcrawlers or mullet and good insect repellant. Croaker and weakfish are getting larger and have many spots to obtain them. Marker 16-25 are all good bets. Baits are nightcrawlers or bait shrimp. Save the live ones for under dock fishing. Now lastly is the shrimping. It should start about mid-month and get better each day we don't have rain. Remember chum, a good net and a cooler with ice is the needed tools for this venture. Now the other item is either shrimp pellets or meal. If you get meal, remember you've got to doctor it up with mud clay and let it dry so it will stay together. But you already knew that. So til next time, keep your line tight and your lure moving!—CAM Staff. R & J Tackle 501 S Orange Ave, Green Cove Springs (904)284-5081

s we remain in the hot months, my fishing does not change much for Redfish, trout, etc. get out early before the heat of the sun, sea breezes, & afternoon storms! I like the low tide early if I’m fishing for the backcountry Reds. Standard methods all work. Usually, anglers can spot backing fish, use the pole to get close in shallow water & flats. The trolling motor can alarm shallow water fish. Especially if you are adjusting the speeds. I like to use a light TBS jig in 1/8-1/4oz less splash on the cast. Subtle presentations are a must, along with quiet. Once fish recognize your presents, they can be difficult to hook up. This style of fishing is not a numbers game. There is a wide variety of baits around this time of year. Best to bring afew different baits. Blue crab, mullet, shrimp,
mud minnows, Fiddlers etc. With multiple baits available, sometimes Summertime reds can be finicky. If the tide is high, I run floats rigs along grass lines, or over structure. Also lure fishing is highly successful working points, bars, bait pods etc. Trout will be in the mix, and readily take surface lures, jerk baits and plastics. Years past we have caught afew over 5 lbs this time of year, however, it’s very hot, and some of the more successful anglers fish dock lights at night, when trout become more active. This is also a good month for the working Angler. The bite can become active again as the low light & temps cool as evening approaches, and we share daylight much later. The fun fish, Lady’s,jacks, sharks, & tarpon will be in full swing! As the sea breeze & sun pick up as the day progresses, fishing bait pods along the beach, & behind shrimp boats, can give their fair share of rod bending fun. Also, the bull reds will be showing up more, as they run the channel edges from Mayport jetties, west well into the St. John’s river. A fisher rig with a crab, ladyfish, or mullet will all be a good choice to hook a Bull. Use heavier tackle to land the fish quickly & a successful release. Until next month,Get out & fish .

lt th mullet into th long j run tr
will go fishing The
Fishing Report Pier and Surf By: Noel Kuhn
A
lthough August may be scorching hot it is usually the start of the hottest fishing of the year! I am specifically talking about the mullet run. Every year the mullet come flooding out of our rivers and into the surf zone. When they arrive they hook a right and begin the long journey to south Florida. This is their annual mating run. The run triggers all of the predators to stack up along the beach. There they
will gorge themselves on mullet. This event makes for fast and exciting fishing within an easy cast from the beach. The one thing you will need is a cast net. When the run is full on you
will be able to cast net your bait in knee deep water. The size of bait you choose will depend on what fish you are targeting. If you want to keep them alive you will also need a bucket and possibly an aerator. If all you take is a five gallon bucket then put a smaller bucket inside of it. You can use the smaller one to refresh the water often to keep your bait alive. My set up may be over the top but I always have frisky bait ready to go. A ten gallon round Igloo water cooler is the base. Inside of it in the bottom is my six foot cast net. On top of that is a two gallon bucket. Inside the bucket is a short handle dip net, aerator and hose. Just below the screw on top I drilled a hole just big enough for the air hose to fit through. Then I fastened a bracket for the aerator to hang from. Voila, fresh bait by keeping it cool, aerated and fresh water often as possible. Size your leader and hook for what you want to catch. i.e. Trout, Jacks and Flounder 30lb mono leader and 2/0 hook. Bluefish and Spanish 3/0 hook and some light steel leader. Tarpon and Redfish 60lb mono leader and a 6/0 hook. For sharks I use a 10/0 hook and 480lb cable. Also size your bait accordingly. From a three inch to twelve inch mullet hooked live or fresh chunks of fresh cut up, you cannot go wrong with so many predators in the surf! Many years the Mullet run lasts all the way until early October. Get out and enjoy the fast action while they are here! See you on the beach.

Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Inshore By Capt. Tommy Derringer
T
his time of year, all kinds of tough fighting fish show up just outside our inlets and along the coastline. As August approaches the bait and the predatory fish that have been going strong through last month are still hanging out in big numbers along the beaches. Tarpon and kingfish will be the focus but also be on the lookout for all types of sharks, huge jacks, spanish macs, bonita, and so many more. If you are looking for some drag-screaming action then heading to the beach might be your ticket this late summer. The inshore bite is hot as well with redfish and trout giving chase to early morning top-water lures. No matter where you’re fishing the bite can get tough during the heat of the day so getting out when it’s coolest will give you the best results. I like to start at first light when fishing the beaches this time of year. Start looking for flipping pogies or mullet as soon as you clear the inlet. Take your time and take a good hard look at each bait pod. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the bait to be crashed but when you see it you’ll know that something big is on the feed. When targeting tarpon around the bait pods I like to use 40lb test braided main line with a long (about 10ft) 40lb-test mono leader attached to a heavier tippet in the 60-80lb range. Tie on a 6/0 to 12/0 circle hook depending on bait size and freeline a pogy along the edges of the bait. If the fish aren’t interested try adding some weight to the rig to get your bait down under the pod. Sometimes that makes all the 12 NORTHEAST FLORIDA

difference. Another great way to find some tarpon is to get behind the shrimp boats. Wait for the shrimpers to toss their bycatch overboard. Sometimes the tarpon and sharks will come up right away but don’t be afraid to wait around awhile if nothing pops up immediately. Some of the best shrimp boat bycatch bites I’ve seen have been when I waited awhile for the feeding frenzy to begin. Just like the beach fishing I like to get on the water early this time of year for the inshore/backcountry stuff. This is a great time to toss your favorite top-water plugs for reds and trout. If the tide is high, find a good grass line and cast your plug parallel down the bank. If the tide is low, try fishing the oyster shell banks along the ICW. These areas will hold a ton of bait at low tide this time of year and you can bet the reds and trout will be holding there too. Also, the flounder can be found at the same places you’ll be finding the reds and trout. A Saltwater Assassin paddle tail on a 1/4oz jighead or weedless hook is my go-to setup for flounder this time of year. A big fat mud minnow pinned to the same jighead works wonders too! We also have some good flood tides this month. The first few floods of late summer/fall tend to be some of the best so check your tide tables and get to your favorite grass flat and look for some tailing redfish and sheepshead. A weedless rigged soft plastic or a shrimp or crab pattern fly will all work well in the flooded grass. Just remember to lead the fish and be as stealthy as possible as those super shallow fish will be on high alert! T
he Northeast Florida Marlin association kicked off our annual Swordfish tournament in September, the first billfish tournament of the fall season. Swordfish are usually the first of the highly migratory fish to arrive in our region after a long hot summer. Sword fishing can be challenging and even a daytime swordfish trip is a tough day with many miles to run and dozens of fathoms of drop and retrieve. But if you do manage to capture one of these big-eyed beasts you’ll enjoy the bounty and treasure the memories for a long time. Local tackle stores like Beamish Custom Tackle in St Augustine and Strike-zone Fishing in Jacksonville have everything you’ll need and local knowledge to share if you ask. Fishing Report & Forecast Fernandina / Amelia Island By Terry D. Lacoss
T
he month of August definitely holds some of the year’s best fishing action, both in the backwaters, near shore and, offshore waters of Amelia Island. Fishermen will not have to navigate too far for big game fish including tarpon, shark, cobia, king mackerel and more. The deep, fish filled waters of the St. Mary’s Inlet is definitely a big fish destination during the month of August.
by a 7/0 circle hook. A fish finder sleeve is attached to the main line which allows different size weights to be exchanged. A light piece of wire is attached to the bank weight and fish finder so during the tarpon’s first jump, the weight is discarded. A 100-pound swivel connects the main line to the shock leader. Barb the menhaden from the bottom of the mouth through the top of the head while cutting the tail off which allows the scent to seep out into the water. Chumming while cutting menhaden up into small pieces and slowly tossing overboard creates a deep-water chum slick and is sure to lure tarpon right up to your barbed baits. Tarpon fishermen should also attach a large buoy to their anchor line so the anchor can be released when a wide shouldered tarpon spends most of your fishing line from your saltwater fishing reel. Also keep in mind the old saying “Drop the Rod Tip” when the silver king is in the middle of a big jump, should not apply to Northeast Florida tarpon. Once the hook is set, keep the rod tip Up! Fishermen are not allowed to bring tarpon out of the water and into a boat unless they have a tarpon tag. For more information on tarpon regulations please visit www.myfwc.com. Inlet and beach fishermen will also find a few smoker king mackerel hanging around during the month of August that will take live menhaden, or mullet fished right on the surface while chumming up a tarpon. A big red bass migration begins to take place in late August during the last of the in-coming tide at the St. Mary’s south jetty rocks and during the falling tide, the tip of the St. Mary’s north jetty rocks should be teeming with bull reds weighing to 50-pounds. Fishing on the bottom with cut mullet, or menhaden is key. Finally, redfish should be tailing in the many bays found in the backwaters of Amelia Island during the last of the in-coming tide and as soon as the tide begins to fall, redfish will disappear from the flooded marsh flats. Best bait is a 1/8th ounce led head jig and Berkley Gulp shrimp in the “New Penny” color pattern. Flounder fishing is excellent while fishing at the little rock jetties at Fort Clinch during the in-coming and first of the falling tides. Fishing with a “Fish Finder” setup and live bullhead minnows, or finger mullet is key for flatfish that could weigh over the ten-pound mark. Sea trout and red fishing is excellent as well in Cumberland Sound where oyster laden shorelines hold specks weighing up to ten pounds. Casting surface plugs including the Storm “Chug Bug” or Zara Spook in the chrome or red and white color patterns. Surf fishing is excellent during the month of August along the pristine beaches of Amelia Island. Best tide is the last of the in-coming and the first of the out going tides while fishing with sand fleas, live finger mullet, or fresh local shrimp.
For more information and charters, call Amelia Angler Outfitters (904) 261-2870, or visit www.ameliaangler.com.
Some of the best tarpon fishing comes at the St. Mary’s inlet while anchoring up your fishing boat and fishing dead on the bottom with barbed menhaden, mullet, whiting or croaker. If there are good numbers of menhaden holding just past the breaking surf on Amelia and Cumberland Islands, tarpon fishing can also be excellent along the beaches as well. Standard tarpon tackle includes 20-50, pound braided fishing line with a 3–4-foot section of 80-100- pound mono shock leader, followed 18 NORTHEAST FLORIDA

Fishing with Kids 101 By Capt. Tim Cutting
A
grumpy old Captain once told me there was fishing and “fishing with kids”. He wasn’t adverse to small children in that classic W.C. Fields way, but nevertheless, a tad short on patience towards the little people. Let’s face it, doing anything with your children, grandchildren or anyone’s children for that matter, presents moments (perhaps even hours), when it takes everything you got, not to get a little…let’s say frazzled. Compound that with a day on the water where you are “pot committed” with pretty much no Happy Meal or Play Station to turn to, and things can go sideways in a hurry. Before we get carried away, first, realize that these are kids we are talking about. Even those pole breaking, bait eating, button pushing, foot stomping, “I wanna go home” kids. I have also been with kids who never want to go home or quit fishing; the “one more cast” kinda kid (I was that kid, and maybe the foot stomper too). But let’s address the kids that aren’t quite so enamored with a long day on the water pitching jigs all day. While we grownups are obviously out there to do some damage and sore lip our finned adversary, it’s important to put the little people first…even if it means sacrificing a shot at a monster, a limit of fine eating filets, or the “targeted species”.
Step one in establishing the “grin”, and developing a life time angler is the target species. Or should I say eliminating the target species. The fish you are now after is the not so elusive “whateverbitis”. The whateverbitis inhabits every place a fish lives in any part of the world. Depending on your locale, this could be a whiting, shiner, sucker, catfish, toadfish, gar, croaker, spot, pinfish, skate, sting ray, or, whatever bites. A child’s first fishing trips should be about them catching something…anything! Many of us anglers would call them trash fish, but to the child starting his angling endeavors these are giant blue marlin and the start of a lifelong passion for fishing. By targeting some of these easier to catch species it is very possible that children can experience the whole thrill of dropping the bait back, feeling the bite, and reeling in the fish! If
you are hiring a guide for you and your children, it’s often wise to let the guide know that you just want to catch fish for the kids...of any kind. This may be the fish you had in mind, or it maybe “whateverbitis”. Remember, this needs to be for the kids. Another important part of your child’s fishing trip should consist of other activities and options. Food and drink go a long way here. Bring some of those junk foods the kids like. While I am not suggesting changing your kids eating habits to sugary snacks and drinks, this is a special occasion, and a special snack or two will go a long way. Establishing a ritual of sorts, like a certain breakfast or dinner stop on the way to, or from fishing, is a great way to bond and make the day on the water one to remember and look forward to. Finally, when a fish is caught, show your child all the nuances of the fish. There may be fish with scales, fish with smooth skin, teeth, no teeth, etc. Do not force your child to hold the fish if he does not want to. Sometimes I give a child a towel to hold a fish. Some fish may be small enough that a kid can hold the line or pole and let the fish “dangle”. Be careful that the fish is not harmed in anyway, and let the child be part of a successful live release. It is important to stress the fact that fish need to be released healthy. If you are catching fish to eat, explain how they are managed as far as limits and size. Although this may be a hard pill to swallow, some children will not last very long on the water, so plan your trip accordingly, giving yourself the option of leaving earlier than you planned. This may even mean just planning a short trip at first. If you take care to make your kids’ first days on the water fun ones, you will have a fishing partner for life. And remember, fishing may not be for everyone (God forbid!), so support your children in all healthy endeavors they may want to pursue.

Wahoo Junkies - Summertime Fishing By Captain Tim Altman
L
et’s face it, the Wahoo bite in July is going off for some members of the Wahoo Junkies Facebook Group (www.facebook.com/groups/ wahoojunkies), just not for those of us in Northeast Florida. If you’re going to Bermuda on vacation the Wahoo bite is in full swing. Several Wahoo Junkies members in Bermuda like Peter Rodday are posting big numbers of big Wahoo being caught on slow trolled live baits. That brings us back to here in Northeast Florida for targeting Summertime Wahoo, what are we doing and how do we target them? The truth is that my good friend Captain David Law and I have experimented with just about everything for summertime Wahoo. But before we get into the how, let’s look at the historical catch trends and the environmental or seasonal aspects why.
I believe the difference between the great wintertime bite and the slower summertime bite is due to water temperature. In the summertime the water on the beach reaches 80+ degrees by late June and in the wintertime we need to travel out to at least 120ft to reach the magic water temperature of 70 degrees. So why do we find better concentrations of Wahoo or “Bigger Numbers” that make them worth targeting in the winter? I believe it is due to 2 factors. First Water Temperature – While we have caught Wahoo in 69 and 68 degree water, the overwhelming number of fish we have caught have been in the 7074 degree temperature range. Secondly and probably most importantly is baitfish (Blue Runners, Offshore Pogies, Sardines, small Bonitas,… etc). Wahoo are just like us, they never want to stray too far away from the dinner table. The bait you are seeing on the beach or nearshore in the summer like large schools of small Bonitas are schooling in the 120-160ft range in the wintertime here in Northeast Florida. You sometimes will see acres of bait on the surface in the 120-135ft range. 22 NORTHEAST FLORIDA
AUGUST 2021
The common school of thought most of us knuckle-dragging Wahoo Fisherman subscribe to is that a migration happens about the time the bait shows up offshore in the winter months. While I buy into this, it sure seems that there is some huge Wahoo caught in the summertime by tournament Kingfisherman live-baiting. Steve Grant and Frank Vining boated a 113lb Wahoo recently during a Kingfish tournament while hooked up with money winning Kingfish…yes, a double header. It is my opinion that we have resident Wahoo that follow the baitfish. The reason that we do better in the winter for increased numbers of fish caught during the same trip is because of the temperature break that happens at the Gulfstream edges and the baitfish congregating on that edge. I believe in the summer the Wahoo become so spread out due to the availability of baitfish that it becomes extremely difficult to target them only by high-speed trolling. Although we do catch them in the summertime by live baiting, we are usually targeting Kingfish and the Wahoo is a by-catch.
Back to Captain David Law and myself becoming so obsessed with Wahoo that we were targeting them in June, July and August…How did we do it and were we successful? The truth is we are still figuring it out. We’ve spent lots of money pulling high-speed lures from the tip of the Mayport Jetties all the way to the Gulfstream. People Kingfishing the beach looked at us like we were aliens from outer space as we went by. What were our results? A few big Kingfish caught, but our brief experiment yielded no Wahoo inside 20 miles while high speed trolling. With this result, we know the Wahoo are all the way up to the beach because infrequently a big Wahoo will be caught by Kingfisherman inside of 10 miles. While it seems these random catches have no pattern and considered a rarity…are they? If they are inside 10 miles, why didn’t we catch them during our high-speed trolling experiment? Maybe it’s because the bite pattern of summertime Wahoo is different. Maybe it’s the abundance of baitfish that makes our lures less attractive to them…. why leave a Ribeye for a convience store hotdog? I believe here in Northeast Florida for those of us that are obsessed with Wahoo will break the code. Because High-Speed Trolling for Wahoo originated in the Bahamas, we possibly could take a page out of Bermuda’s playbook and learn how to live bait them effectively. But then again..maybe these Wahoo caught on the beach inside of 10 miles are like David Law and I…”adventurous anomalies” trying to figure out a new way. I don’t think so and I believe some Wahoo Junkie like David or I will figure out a new tactic that will be give us the ability to catch Summertime Wahoo effectively…till then we’ll keep trying Captain Tim Altman HooDoo Sportfishing Charters www.saltwaterchallenge.com tim@saltwaterchallenge.com

Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Offshore By Capt. Robert Johnson
Hot and Cold
I
n the summer months we usually get a cold water thermocline on the bottom. Even though the water on the surface is warm and beautiful, bottom temperatures can fall to the 60s even 50s in extreme years. This year we have not seen that yet but it could be any day now. Fishing can be great you just have to change tactics and target different species. Anchoring is a must during these kinds of conditions. Sometimes you may have to sit on a spot for 30 minutes or more and wait on the fish to become active. Chumming helps greatly and will get the Amberjacks, Cobia and Mangrove Snapper up in the water column. This is light tackle fishing ,30 # test monofilament with just enough weight (1/2 to ¾ ounce) to get you bait headed towards the bottom. Live or dead sardines are the bait of choice. The cooler the water temps on the bottom the hungrier they will get. You will still catch Vermilion Snapper, Black Sea bass and other species on the bottom.
The bite will typically be a lot lighter and a little slower. Grouper fishing will typically be slow during thermocline conditions. Last month we had a 3 day Red Snapper season and even though it was only 3 days the Red Snapper fishing was off the charts good. It seams the Population is expanding rapidly. If we only could get the federal Gov to be reasonable with the season as they are on the gulf coast. Please express your views to your congressman and senator by calling emailing and even mailing them. We need to fold them with our thoughts. On the troll Mackerel are king. There have been some really nice fish caught this year from the beach all the way out to 23 fathoms. Before T S else the Kings were on the beach in good numbers but they have moved out to deeper water now. 21 fathoms seams to be where they are most concentrated. If you find the bait you will find the fish. Bonita (false albacore) and Barracuda will fill in the slow time between Mackerel bites. Live bait slow trolled on down riggers will produce some large fish. Live Pogies(Menhaden) are thick on the beach and are the bait of choice. There will be plenty of fish caught the old fashion way with using Drone Spoons pulled down deep on a number 3 planner. I usually run the spoon on around 40 feet of 100 # monofilament. This is a great thing to do when you don’t have all day and just want to bend the pole. Until next Month tight lines and “Let’s go Fishing”

SUMMER BASS ON TOP
TYLER WOOLCOTT
I
t’s hot. The bass are transitioning, and the fishing can be very fun if you can locate them. Generally, summer bass are chasing baitfish. This can group fish up and make them eager to eat easy meals off the surface. Whether you’re throwing a walking bait, a buzzbait or even a popper, topwater lures can do some extreme damage in the heat of summer. When targeting fish chasing bait near shallow water, I like a popper-style bait or a bait that kicks up water, like a buzzbait or a Whopper Plopper. Bank dwellers usually chase bluegill and shad. They can be very aggressive and fun to target. Always keep your eyes peeled for movement and baitfish activity when you’re working down the bank. Bass won’t be far from this activity. Often times in the summer, fish group up near deeper water to harass large schools of baitfish. The baitfish will be different from lake to lake and region to region, but the patterns will be similar. Focus on points and humps, where the fish can push and ambush bait. These deeper fish tend to show themselves, and you’ll sometimes see them schooling on top or chasing bait near the surface. Keep your eyes and ears open

for activity. When schooling activity occurs, you want to get a bait in the mix as quickly as possible. I like a walking bait for this scenario and throw Spook-style baits like
the 13 Fishing Dual Pitch or a pencil popper. Whether you’re deep or shallow, matching
COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
the size of your lure to the size and shape of the baitfish will result in more bites. Always look for activity, and be ready when the opportunity presents itself. Summertime is an awesome time to fish, and it’s my absolute favorite time of year to throw a topwater.
Topwater Gear When targeting fish chasing bait near the shallows with a popper or a buzzbait, I like a shorter rod for more accurate casts. I use a 13 fishing 7’ 1” MH Omen Black casting rod paired with an 8:3:1Concept A reel spooled up with 20-pound monofilament or 40-pound braided line. When chasing schooling fish in deeper water, I like a longer rod for longer casts. I use a 13 Fishing 7’ 5” Omen Black casting rod paired up with an 8:3:1 Concept A reel spooled with 30-pound Seaguar Smackdown braid. The braid and the long rod pair up to allow long casts to get the bait in the strike zone when fish come up schooling far from the boat. The fast gear ratio reel is important in both the shallow and deep scenarios. They allow you to get your bait back to the boat quickly if you need to make a different cast when the moment presents itself. Tyler Woolcott is a professional tournament angler and guide. nook, redfish and spotted seatrout are now catch-and-release only in Tampa Bay due to recent impacts from red tide. The restrictions began July 16 and will continue through Sept. 16. This applies to the following areas: • All Florida waters of Manatee County north of State Road 64, including all waters of the Braden River, and all tributaries of the Manatee River, excluding all waters of Palma Sola Bay. • All Florida waters of Hillsborough County. • All Florida waters of Pinellas County, excluding all waters of the Anclote River and its tributaries. “While it’s unfortunate that we must do this so close to the recent reopening of these species to harvest in this area, we know temporary catch-andrelease measures such as these are successful in keeping fisheries sustainable throughout red tide events such as this one,” said FWC Executive Director Eric Sutton. “We will continue working with our partners, stakeholders and local communities to evaluate this situation.” “We’ve seen the devastation to the redfish, trout and snook populations in Tampa Bay, and we support the catch-and-release initiative taken by FWC,” stated Brian Gorski, Executive Director of Coastal Conservation Association Florida. “In working with FWC on this initiative, we’ve heard support from members and guides throughout the region who also understand the need for such a change. We must protect the fish and our waterways so that generations to come can enjoy the thrill of catching one of these iconic species.” Regulations outside of those counties remain unchanged, including the measures south of State Road 64 in Manatee County through Gordon Pass in Collier County for snook, redfish and spotted seatrout. urf Expo is a lot more than surf. As the largest and longest-running watersports and beach lifestyle tradeshow in the world, the show is about watersports; it’s about boating; it’s about everything that has to do with the coastal lifestyle. Surf Expo’s “Bluewater” category caters to the fishing lifestyle that is an inherent part of the “waterman” lifestyle of today’s watersports enthusiast who lives on, in and for the water or just aspires to the lifestyle. Surf Expo caters to all things water, from surfing, to fishing, and paddling on a SUP, kayak or canoe, or just a day at the beach or on the lake. For apparel and accessory brands and manufacturers, Surf Expo is the ideal place to promote products to a new audience of buyers searching for products to cater to the “waterman” customer. AFTCO’s Chairman and CEO Bill Shedd said, “We’ve been coming to Surf Expo since the beginning, and we were one of the first to be in the Bluewater section—where we’ve found a new home. There’s a whole lifestyle around saltwater, offshore and big game fishing that’s bled off into inshore fishing and more of an outdoor activity in the broader outdoor world. AFTCO fits into that.” For buyers, it’s the ideal way to conveniently shop top fishing apparel and accessory brands and source from the show’s 10 other water-related categories to fill shelves with everything from sunglasses and sunscreen to towels, footwear and sportswear. Tackle dealers who don’t take advantage of the crossover between fishing and the overall watersports lifestyle are missing out on a powerful revenue stream. Owner of Sarasota fishing and boating landmark CB’s Saltwater Outfitters, Aledia Tush said, “We’ve been attending Surf Expo for many years. We’re always looking for new products, T-shirts, sportswear, suntan products, towels, sandals, shoes and sunglasses. Being a Florida retailer, Surf Expo is a show not to be missed!” Brands you’ll find in Bluewater at Surf Expo include AFTCO, Deep Blue Gear, Fish Hippie, Habit Outdoors, Jeep by Buck Wear, John Boy Brand, MANG Gear, Marsh Wear Clothing, Reel Life, Reelhead, Salt Life, The Qualified Captain, Unsalted Coast and WTF-What The Fin. Other core brands to be found across the show include Costa, YETI, Salty Crew, Avid Gear, Hook & Tackle, Reel Skipper, Beach and Barn, Bimini Bay Outfitters, Unsalted Coast, Skinny Water Culture and many, many more. Surf Expo’s upcoming show stages September 9-11 at the Orange County Convention Center’s West Concourse in Orlando, Fla. Registration is free for qualified retailers, at surfexpo.com or contact steven.fisher@surfexpo.com.

CAMP FOR TROUT DEEP IN THE SMOKIES By Nick Carter
W
hen the boat dropped us off Friday morning, it was with an understanding someone would return for us Sunday afternoon. We debarked into two nights and three days of camping and trout fishing deep in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With no cell service or road access for miles in any direction, we were about as disconnected as you can get in this part of the world. It was a glorious feeling. Actually, one of our guides, Jake Tallent, of Fish Tales Outfitters in Franklin, N.C., had a satellite phone/EPIRB “for emergencies.” Around the campfire one night, he admitted using it to text his girlfriend. Guess the whole out-of-touch and roughing-it fantasy is a little outdated these days. We weren’t really roughing it much at all. Tallent and our other guide, Nick Potts, rolled cartloads of gear up the trail to our campsite near the mouth of Hazel Creek. Three other clients and I sat in camp chairs and got to know each other while the guides set up camp. That set the mood for the weekend. The camping was comfortable, everything was provided for. All we were expected to do was fish hard, enjoy ourselves and return to hot meals around a campfire each evening. Hazel Creek flows through high mountains on the north shore of
North Carolina’s Lake Fontana. Road access to the north shore was completely cut off in the 1940s, when TVA flooded this impoundment of the Little Tennessee River. Abandoned, the communities that existed there returned to the forest. In three-quarters of a century since, it has become one of the most beautiful and historically intriguing areas of the Smokies. The best access is by boat across the lake. Proctor, N.C. is the ghost town on Hazel Creek. The town’s main drag, Calico Street, is now the gravel trail that parallels the creek for 15 miles up into the hills. Ruins of Proctor are hidden everywhere in the creek and up steep wooded hillsides. Tallent regaled us with history as we passed landmarks hiking upstream in search of good trout water each day. The creek itself is on the large side of typical for the park. It is cold and clear with a relatively flat gradient that makes for easy streamside hiking. A mix of boulder-strewn stretches and bedrock shoals create interesting holding water. There are also some deep, dark pools. Hazel Creek is loaded with beautiful 7- to 12-inch stream-born rainbow trout. There are also some big browns lurking in the deep holes. Over three days of fishing, we caught good numbers of fish with simple dry-dropper rigs on 3- and 4-weight fly rods. There’s nothing more fun than wading up a mountain stream to toy with wild trout that are eager to jump on a dry fly. Hazel Creek is a gorgeous place to do it. THE STRAIGHT BOWSPRIT The Straight Bowsprit is a fixed 316 stainless steel bowsprit featuring a fixed design with angled rollers that ensure almost every anchor drops freely. Universal mounting holes make it easy to install yourself with just a few bolts. If you’re looking for a timeless, reliable bowsprit for your boat, you can’t go past the Straight Bowsprit. Marine-grade 316 stainless steel and a fixed design with angled rollers help self right the anchor on retrieving. It is designed to be adapted to most boats. The large is perfect for any vessel up to 45’ / 15m while the small suits boats up to 27’ / 9m. “For a while, we’ve identified ourselves as the drum anchor winch experts. But really, having dealt with various consultations and unique boating experiences over the years, we’ve really become boat anchoring experts along the way,” said Sara Hitchins, Trade Show and Office Manager, of the expanded inventory. She said it only made sense to begin selling all components of boat-anchoring configurations. E-Z Anchor Puller will attend the in-person IBEX show in late September, Booth 3-2130. The “Trade Only” Tampa-based event caters to marine industry professionals and is “dedicated to advancing the business of boating.” E-Z Anchor Puller Mfg. GULP!
®
YOUR FISH. OUR SCIENCE.
SCENT
TASTE
FISH SMELL 1000X BETTER THAN WE DO. Underwater. In current. And even in nutrient-dense saltwater, fish can pick up a scent at the parts per billion level. Think that’s impressive? How about a bait with the ability to trick that sense of smell into believing it is even better than real food. In scientific tests, Gulp!® proved so effective on saltwater gamefish, it actually outfished real bait time and time again. Not only does the scent outperform real and artificial bait, it has 400 times the scent dispersion of the best competing soft plastic bait. Now, Gulp! is available in all of the most popular sizes, colors and actions, including the new Firetail options. Berkley® Gulp! We’ve done the science, now you catch the fish. ©2021 Pure Fishing, Inc.
