$375K GJKT Slated for July 12-17
T
his month’s CAM cover is dedicated to the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament (GJKT) and all of the die-hard kingfish anglers out there. The GJKT, from July 12-17, is a weeklong celebration of fishing in one the East Coast’s great fishing communities. With a festival featuring food, exhibitors and all things nautical, along with several different tournaments, including kids’ tournaments and a redfish tournament, the GJKT has grown into a lot more than just a spectacular kingfish tournament. With the traditional king mackerel tournament season upon us, GJKT is holding one of its richest tournaments ever. Teams will fish July 15-16 out of Jim King Park in Jacksonville, Fla. This year, teams will compete for a first-place prize package valued at more than $160,000. Catch the largest kingfish over two days of fishing, and you could be the proud new owner of a brand new 25T Contender sport fishing boat powered by twin 150hp Yamaha motors. If that’s not the biggest single prize in kingfishing, it has to be close. Fifty other places and divisions will also be paid out, including Lady and Junior Angler prizes, so anglers can still win big even if they aren’t the lucky angler to catch the largest kingfish. The weigh-ins are a sight for spectators to behold, and the total purse is valued at $375,000. The GJKT, one of the oldest kingfish tournaments around, is now in its 41st year. The tournament reached 1,000 entrants before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States, and it is now on the way back up. Jacksonville Marine Charities (JMC), a 501c3 corporation, is the
parent organization of the GJKT, and all proceeds from the tournament are used to promote and enhance fishing in Northeast Florida. To date, several hundred thousand dollars have been donated for such projects as reef enhancement, marine science education and boater safety issues, to name a few. For more information about the GJKT or JMC, visit kingfishtournament.com.

FOR GROUPER SEASON, IT’S... By Capt. Quinlyn Haddon
W
ith the opening of gag grouper this month throughout the Gulf of Mexico, Florida grouper season is basically open across the board. The regulations for grouper vary greatly from state to state and even within specific regions of each state, so make sure to the latest legal harvest information in the location you plan to fish. With that out of the way, game-on and good luck; it sure will be nice not to have to vent and release these chubby, spotted, pre-sandwiches. Grouper fishing can be a challenge in regions that don’t have surface markings, where anglers rely primarily on coordinates of small hard-bottom patches. The numbers that aren’t completely overfished have been acquired by fishermen who’ve spent years cruising the ocean. Hiring a salty and experienced charter captain is highly recommended for targeting grouper; paying attention to what they tell you is equally as important. If you choose to go it alone, there are a few things recommended to ensure your best chances of success. As opposed to pelagic fishing, where a school of fish can move through, and it may be better to have lighter leader starting out just to entice a bite, you’ll want to gear-up for grouper.
8 NATIONAL
JUNE 2021
Losing that first grouper bite can result in shutting down the entire spot. When a large grouper breaks off, especially if it takes the entire rig with the hook and lead with it, that fish will swim back down to its home—where all the other fish are—and sound the danger alarm by grunting. It’s best to start out with heavy line to avoid this, especially if you don’t have more bottom numbers nearby to bounce around to. Make sure your drags are set tight, your gear is on the heavy side, and that you are paying attention when you first arrive at a spot. Cigars can be lit, beers can be shotgunned and rod-holders may be utilized only after you have been at a spot for the second half, or immediately after losing a big fish. If you want to catch spotted sandwiches, or just not cripple your anchor-pulling deckhand, this is important information to apply to your trip. When fishing for grouper, there are many ways to rig for them. Utilizing 60-plus-pound leader, the correct lead for your current and a large circle hook, many different kinds of baits will work. Experiment with squid, shrimp, crab, sardines, live bait and pieces of fresh fish cut a number of different ways. Keep a variety going down, and pay attention to what is getting bites. Don’t forget that if you lose a big one, you are on the right tide and are still marking fish, that you

might have chased the bite away. This is the time to take your lunch break, light that cigar, or move spots entirely. If you come visit Marathon this grouper season, there are several restaurants that will cook your catch, but none more specialized in preparing this species for the table than Castaway Restaurant. Their Dijonnaise-style grouper, which is a heavy cream reduction sauce loaded with mushrooms, is top of the line. Remember to ask your crew to cut out the cheeks while they fillet your grouper, especially if you harvested enough of them to add up. Happy hunting, and good luck out there. Capt. Quinlyn Haddon guides with Blue Magic Charters, docked at Castaway Restaurant in Marathon, Fla. Contact Blue Magic at (504) 920-6342 and keep up with Quinlyn through her social media @CaptainQuinlyn.

FIND SOME
SUMMER SOLITUDE S
By Capt. Michael Okruhlik
chool is out! This has always been my marker for the official beginning of summer. I know the bays will be filled with everyone getting out to enjoy Mother Nature, so finding solitude is key to catching fish. My family and I will be there too, but if I’m lucky, you won’t see me. Here are some methods to avoid the crowds and catch a lot of fish! Let’s focus on kayaks and areas only small vessels can access. Small, shallow-draft watercraft help us elude the summer crowds and find our solitude. Pushing farther back into the shallows and marsh areas requires some planning, so let’s start with some satellite scouting on the computer. The first thing to do is find areas that have tidal movement. One way to determine this via satellite is to zoom in on the openings of bayous and drains. If you notice a deeper hole at the mouth, this lets you know it has good current flow, which is what causes a washout in the mouth. If the mouth looks shallow or silted in, search for another spot.
PHOTO COURTESY OF KNOCKIN TAIL LURES
Once you have identified areas with sufficient current, find the structure. I like areas with scattered grass, shell, or both. Add in some depth changes around bends, and you are set. Depending how deep into the marsh you are going, and if you are new to the area, taking a GPS is a great idea. Once you get in the marsh, it looks completely different on the way out. Cell phone service might not always be reliable, and I know on my phone the bright sun really makes it hard to see the satellite imagery. Now let’s get down to the business end and talk about lures and presentation. I generally like to throw a paddle tail. If I am fishing a new area, I’ll have one rigged weedless on a weighted swimbait hook. I prefer this style of lure for a couple of reasons. One, it is a great search bait. I can simply
cast, reel and cover a lot of water. It is also my preferred soft plastic when fishing shallow water, which is what you find in the marsh. Redfish will not hesitate to hit a lure reeled in a straight line with a vibrating tail. Adding sound into the mix really grabs their attention. Like the clicking sound of a fleeing shrimp, the Knockin Tail Lure, with its built-in tail rattle is my lure of choice in this scenario. These swimbaits rattle on a steady retrieve and can make the difference between just fishing and catching. Be safe, find an out-of-the-way area, and catch some fish! I know my family and I will be tucked away in the backwaters in June. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Knockin Tail Lures, Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

The End of an Era
2016-P
Due to the pandemic, the West Point Mint—the U.S. Mint branch that normally strikes Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Silver Eagles—temporarily locked down. Demand was skyrocking, and so the U.S. Mint turned to its other branches, ordering them to strike special “Emergency Production” runs of Silver Eagles. It was great news for silver buyers, and even better news for collectors. Here’s why:
Silver Eagles have no mint mark to tell us where they were produced. But thanks to some skilled detective work, the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the world’s leading third-party grading services, were able to certify our coins as being struck at the San Francisco Mint during this Emergency Production run. What’s more, a number of these coins have been graded as Mint State-69 (MS69) condition—just one grade point away from perfection—and sealed with labels certifying them as being struck at the San Francisco Mint during the series’ 35th anniversary!

IN THE LAND OF THE MAYA
t incited excited Spanish chatter from the crew when the fish’s bill slashed the surface. “Marlin blanco?” was the only phrase I could decipher. I clung to the rod as Tony Tuz and his father Lorenzo cleared lines. “Billfish! Billfish!” Tony barked so the gringos understood. Then my 10-year-old son gasped. A 7-foot sailfish went airborne and tail-walked for 20 yards off the stern. It was awesome, exactly what I envisioned while e-mailing Charter Fishing Cancun prior to a recent family vacation. My son and I were the only anglers aboard the 35-foot Bertram Xaviera III. We could have used some help cranking in all those fish. Cancun, Mexico is a great place to fish. The resorts overlook the Straits of Yucatan on the northeast tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. It’s the pinch point between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, a highway for pelagic species. In March, we were early for the headliner species. From April through July, summer is peak season for blue and white marlin, sailfish, tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi—which they call Dorado. Snapper and grouper species, as well as amberjack
By Nick Carter and huge barracuda can be caught year-round. No matter. We just wanted bent rods, and Capt. Jorge Rivas steered us toward open water with baitwell full of small jacks and blue runners. The action began almost as soon as Tony and Lorenzo got lines out. We pulled a spread with bird teasers, a squid chain, skirted ballyhoo and several flat-lined live baits, which almost immediately brought up a big Dorado that came unbuttoned. Then we drove into birds. Gulls diving on flying fish were enough to get me excited. Tony was not impressed. “Bonito,” he said with a shrug. “Sea gulls mean bonito. Frigate birds mean tuna.” Sure enough, my son took the rod to catch bonito for the bait bucket until big fork-tailed frigate birds
started diving all around the boat. The boy could definitely tell the difference when a gorgeous 20-pound blackfin tuna took the bait. It wasn’t even 8:30 a.m., and we had seen a lot of action. But the captain and crew had more to show us. When the tuna bite died, we stopped over a ledge in 350 feet of water. Lorenzo worked quickly to cut bonito into baits. He sliced away the entire dorsal section and tail of each fish to leave streamlined head-and-belly baits. We jigged them deep, and in short order were tripling up on amberjacks up to 40 pounds. We battled big AJs until weary arms begged for mercy and then headed to deeper water and the sailfish. We finished the day with three big barracuda, which are a ton of fun when they’re 4 to 5 feet long. After all that activity, my son crashed in the shade for the ride back. Seeing him smile in his sleep is something I’ll never forget. To book an inshore or offshore trip out of Cancun, contact Charter Fishing Cancun at cfishingcancun@gmail.com. BAIT POD
2 FLORIDA
JUNE 2021
n June and July, small glass minnows school together and form bait pods here on the Atlantic Coast of Florida. The pods move up and down the beach. These bait pods are easy to spot by looking for diving birds and feeding fish thrashing the surface. Sometimes the bait pods come near shore and go out, but usually they move parallel to the shore and well within casting range. What kind of fish can you catch surf casting in these bait pods? In June, tarpon move around the inlets and start cruising the beach looking for bait pods. Large female snook swim along the trough under the bait pods. Schools of large jack bust the surface, and the occasional schools of bluefish and ladyfish are there, along with mackerel that haven’t yet moved north. Around the trough, smaller table fare like whiting and croaker will be caught with regular 4-inch shad tail jigs or more easily on smaller jigs and spoons. If you let the jig hit the bottom and snap it up quickly, you’ll catch lots of these great-eating panfish. Anatomy of a Bait Pod: Most of the time, a bait pod moves north or south. On slack tide, the pod will slow down. I’ve even seen them stop for 30 minutes in one place. Croaker and whiting will be on the bottom under the pod. Or if the pod is shallow, croaker and whiting will be under the first breakers and can be caught in the wash. Jerk your jig off the bottom, letting it hit for a second each time. Jerk, reel some, let it sit. Usually the tarpon are on the outside of the pod farthest from the beach. For tarpon, cast as far out over the pod as possible and use a slow steady retrieve. Snook are almost always on the shallow side near the trough and the first breakers. Cast more parallel to shore using a steady lifting and releasing movement with the rod tip. Jack can be anywhere, and I like fishing near the surface with a brisker retrieve when targeting jacks. Also use the brisk retrieve for bluefish, ladyfish and mackerel. My favorite June lures are a 3/8-ounce chartreuse jig with a 4-inch pearl white shad tail and a shallow running Yo-Zuri crankbait in white. I also throw a Skitter-Walk (topwater plug) when the water heats up. Remember, for the best summertime surf action: Follow the bait pod. Richard Matteson writes for Stuart Rod and Reel Club. Be a STAR Garbage-olist this Summer!
W
I
n its seventh year, STAR remains the largest, family-friendly saltwater fishing competition in Florida. The summer-long event invites anglers and non-anglers of all ages and skill levels to participate in 17 divisions and win their share of prizes valued at almost $500,000, including boats, motors, scholarships and more. For anyone who enjoys trash-free fishing and boating, the Costa Kick Plastic Trash Division presented by Papa’s Pilar gives conservation enthusiasts the chance to win big just by collecting five-gallon buckets of trash. Trash Division participants can win by gathering five-gallon buckets of garbage from a coastline or while fishing and submitting photos of their collection through the dedicated STAR App. The Trash Division welcomes participants of all ages, but has become a favorite among youth registrants, as it gives students the opportunity to complete community service hours and improve coastal habitats too. For every five-gallon bucket of trash collected, disposed of and submitted through the STAR App, it not only increases opportunities for winning but equates to 30 minutes of community service time, too. “Unlike traditional fishing tournaments, STAR focuses on conservation, family participation and fun,” CCA Florida STAR Director Leiza Fitzgerald
said. “From Memorial Day to Labor Day, STAR gives families the shot to win prizes, youth scholarships and more while being outdoors, conserving coastal resources and making lifelong memories.” This year, Trash Division participants can also submit entries for two special photo opportunities including the “Reel Life & Thrash Can Bucket STAR Photo” and “Reel Life & Tacklewebs Fun Fishing Photo” awards. To enter, participants must wear Reel Life apparel and use a Trash Can Bucket Topper or wear Reel Life Apparel and include a Tacklewebs product, respectively. Additionally, the Trash Division will also name three randomly drawn winners and award “Most Buckets Gathered” at the end of the competition. STAR 2021 is the 101-day event that gives registrants countless fishing memories and opportunities to win. To register or learn more, visit ccaflstar.com today.

PLANTING CORAL, By John Christopher Fine
D
eath of coral reefs is a worldwide dilemma. In the Florida Keys, Richard Stanczyk has watched it happen. A fisherman for 70 years, Stanczyk has spent a lot of time on the ocean. He and his family own the fabled Bud n’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada. “I witnessed a lot of things. It took 25 years to put in sewers. I’m a bonefisherman. The bay was smothered by brown algae. It is from human waste and farming. There is acid rain,” Stanczyk said from his office at the marina, where the walls are covered with memories of great fish, major fishing tournaments and trophies. Stanczyk sees the environment married to the economy. “There has been a tremendous reduction in fish stocks due to technology and long-liners. I’d fish for swordfish at night. It didn’t take long for long-liners to wipe it out. The Gulf Stream is slowing down. It used to take 15 pounds to hold bottom.
Now only 5. Scientists say it now,” he said. “This coral restoration project is a grass roots effort. I have four grandchildren. I want them to enjoy the ocean as I have, as my children have.” The Stanczyk family contributed use of land on the ocean to a fledgling coral restoration project begun a year ago by Dr. Kylie Smith, with Clemson University and Mote Marine Laboratory, and Mike Goldberg, owner of Key Dives, Islamorada. They call the project I.CARE (Islamorada Conservation and Restoration Education). Mote established a coral nursery at Bud n’ Mary’s Marina. Pumping equipment, an insulated water-storage tank and banks of coral nursery tanks were set up along with an office trailer for researchers. Stony corals from Mote’s nursery on Summerland Key were replanted on substrate in the open ocean under permit and with the cooperation of NOAA and Marine sanctuary officials as well as widespread support from Keys

dive operations, businesses and individuals. “The science behind it is extraordinary,” Goldberg said. “Corals are being taken from disease resistant stock gathered by micro-harvesting and grown in laboratory conditions. Temperature and PH are carefully adjusted in the nursery to simulate ocean conditions in the future, when scientists predict temperature rise and acid rain will affect corals.” Coral is an animal. It begins as free-swimming larvae that settle on substrate and grow. A plant called zooxanthellae lives in symbiosis inside the coral polyp. The plant needs sunlight for photosynthesis to produce carbohydrates and oxygen that corals
use. The plant helps dispose of the coral’s waste. When water is turbid or when temperatures rise above 70 to 85 degrees, the plants die. Coral bleaches white and also dies in most cases. Coral wasting disease and bleaching have been devastating in the Keys. Dr. Smith said the 60 to 70 percent live coral coverage of the 1970s has fallen to just 3 to 5 percent. I.CARE’s program should hopefully turn the tide. Coral reefs provide critical habitat for fish and marine organisms. “If you lose the habitat, you lose everything,” Stanczyk concluded. For more on I.CARE, visit www.icareaboutcoral.org.

It’s time to take a kid fishing! Kingfish Tournament tlme is upon us again. Each year this gives all boat captains a real opportunity to have a positive influence on the younger generation. A lot complain about our kids playing video games or staying on social media and just sitting around the house. If we can teach our kids about the wonder of the outdoors and particularly the ocean what a life changing event that could be. The Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament offers all boat captains the chance to have just such an impact on our local youth. The cost to enter a Junior Angler in the Offshore Tournament is only $10, the same price it was in 1981! If your boat is not entered in the General Tournament you can still take a Junior Angler for only $50 each. Last year there was over a 260 Junior Anglers entered. These are the experiences that life memories are made of. The GJKT recognizes the top 25 Junior Anglers with valuable prizes. Last year the top Junior won a boat, motor and trailer. If you are like me and your Jr Angler has aged out, I am sure that there are other Jr Anglers in your family or

Jacksonville Marine Charities In 1980, a small group of local businessmen wanted to organize a fishing tournament, similar to those in which they had participated in other coastal areas. They thought Jacksonville was an ideal location for such an endeavor and plans were made to launch the First Annual Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament, held in July 1981. Since then, the GJKT has become one of the largest events in Jacksonville. Jacksonville Marine Charities, Inc, the 501 c(3) organization behind the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament, evolved through the success of the GJKT and utilizes its proceeds to support marine science research, preservation, and education.
Ultimately, our goal remains what it was when we were founded 40 years ago, to deliver to the fishermen and our community a first class Tournament and generate support for local marine charities. Over the past 40 years, Jacksonville Marine Charities, Inc has donated over $650,000 to the First Coast family. The Greater Jacksonville Kingfish tournament itself, however, remains the Jacksonville Marine Charitis greatest gift to the First Coast community.
Chairman of the Board
Captain Jim Suber
JMC is proud to support a variety of marine-focused charitable programs within the community including:
• Host of the ‘Down at the Dock’ Derby in partnership with Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville. • Safe Harbor Boys Home Spot Tournament • North Florida Women Veterans Organization • Jacksonville School of Autism Flounder Pounder Tournament • Linda Netti Memorial Kayak Challenge Tournament • Jacksonville University’s Marine Science Research Institute • Development of Sisters Creek Park as the permanent site of the GJKT • Support of the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation • Support along with the City of Jacksonville offshore & inshore reef programs • Support of the St. Johns Riverkeeper • Support of the Florida Lure Anglers Banding for Austin & Clay Roberts Inshore youth tournaments • Support of the Heroes on the Water.

America’s Boating Club in Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Sail & Power Squadron (JSPS), is part of the world’s largest recreational boating organization. For more than 60 years, we have worked to make the waters around Jacksonville a safer place through boating education, civic service and fellowship. Through JSPS, you can improve your boating skills and knowledge with certified instructors. Since we offer a wide range of courses, you have lots of choices. You can take advantage of any course. Need help? We can help you decide where to start. If you are a beginning boater, you might want to start with America's Boating Course (ABC) or Boat Handling. ABC will also fulfil Florida’s requirement for an approved boating course so you can legally operate a boat. Boat Handling goes further, and gives you a fuller understanding of boating knowledge and techniques. If you are interested in getting around on longer trips, then you'll want to take our in-depth Marine Navigation courses. These will help you make way in charted waters like large lakes, bays, and near shore gulf and ocean boating. You may be interested in electronic navigation tools with our Electronic Navigation course. If you want even more, we teach Offshore and Celestial Navigation courses, aimed at offshore long-distance boating. If you have a boat, or if you are thinking of getting one, you may want one of our operations and maintenance courses: Engine Maintenance, Marine Electrical Systems, or Marine Communication Systems. Want to know more about Weather, Sail boating, or Cruise Planning? We have those, too. If you have a boat and want to make sure it is US Coast Guard compliant, contact us and schedule a free vessel safety inspection. If you just want to get involved with an organization that serves its community and has a great time together doing it, consider JSPS. We support many events in the area including the Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament, the Mug Race, Poker Run, and the annual Blessing of the Fleet. By joining America’s premier boating organization, you can have fun with other boaters on the water and on land!

Fishing Report & Forecast Mayport By Capt. Kirk Waltz
S
ummer is upon us and I look forward to calm seas and the right amount of ocean swell. The month of May started out with a bang with a few crazy weather fronts. A cold Northeaster coupled with some crazy winds kept the sheepshead biting in spurts but the dredging has had a toll on the fishery.. I believe that our normal Bermuda High weather patterns will begin to dominate soon. Look for copious amounts of bait to push into the beach and bring bull reds, sharks, tarpon, kings ,bonita, sailfish, cuda’s, and cobia. Catch a live well full of these and pitch back into the pods. I try to find big swirling black or dark bait pods that have not had a net tossed on them. Big fish can be easily spooked and stealth will pay big dividends. Just toss a med heavy spinner like a Shimano Saragusa 5000 and a med heavy rod like a 7ft Jigging rod rigged with a 2-3oz egg sinker and a 2 ft length of 60-80 shock leader with a 5/0 live bait hook back into the foray and hang on. If there is any fish in the pod they should whack it! Look for the striking fish to hit these live baits trolled over the regular haunts both on the beach and the local party ground hot spots. Kings, cudas, sharks, bonita, sails, and cobia will lurk around the hot spots and should readily take these frisky baits. A good trolling rod like a Shimano Torium 30 with 20-30lb line works best and a short piece 52 NORTHEAST FLORIDA

of wire for slow trolling king rigs which can be easily made or stop by Strike Zone or B&M and the boys will sell you premade rigs or how to make ‘em.The bottom fishing can be good this month for seabass, grouper, beeliners, triggers, and snapper. Check the regs for what you can and cannot keep as they vary. The big rocks will hold redfish and trout with a small amount of action for Spanish on the higher tides. A Clark spoon or Seahawk work well with a small length of wire attached. As the heat builds these fish seek cooler water so try to keep that in mind when you check the rocks. The rip outside of the rocks will hold kings, cudas, sharks, cobia, and an occasional sailfish. Slow troll this area on the bottom of the outgoing tide for best results. The inshore Mayport basin both north and south from the little jetties will hold trout, reds, some drum, sheepshead, and flounder along with lots of jacks and ladyfish. The falling outgoing tide produces the best result. Try topwater plugs early like a Bomber-Long A or a white gulp swimming minnow for positive results.Remember as it gets hot these fish feed early and late in the back country. I also go to my old standby of mud minnows or shrimp on a 1/4oz jig to catch a few fish for the cooler. Remember you cannot catch ‘em from the couch! Capt. Kirk can be reached at 904.241.7560 or 904.626.1128 for info on charters from 4 to 50 ppl. He can also be heard every Saturday morning from 7am to 10am on The Outdoors Show on 1010am or 92.5 fm giving out weather, tides, and fishing forecasts with Jeff Lageman and Capt. Kevin Faver.

Fishing Report & Forecast Flagler Inshore By Captain Chris Herrera
N
ow that summer is here options on where to fish are endless. If targeting redfish is your thing, first light on the flats will yield some nice slot fish during low tide. Soft plastic jerk baits and paddle tails are my go to when the reds are feeding in the shallows. During higher tides a topwater plug is my go to. Flounder will continue to show up on the flats and creeks while fishing for redfish. Mud minnows pinned on a jig head tossed around deeper creek bends will account for most flounder catches. Shallow water flounder will eat gold spoons and spinner baits retrieved slowly just above the bottom. Bigger flounder are making their way in from nearshore wrecks and into the inlets. Trout fishing will be stellar during low light conditions along creek mouths that dump into the ICW. Subsurface diving plugs and soft plastic paddle tails that look like a mullet jigged in 4-8 ft. of water will entice trout to chew. Night time dock light fishing will be in full swing as long as the water is moving. DOA shrimp pitched up current and let drift through dock lights will fool just about any trout. Maybe Tarpon is more
your thing and they too can be found on the flats, rolling during first light when winds are calmest. A live select shrimp is a prime choice for juvenile Tarpon or whip out the long rod and place a black and purple toad fly in their path. When the sun is up and things start to slow down in the skinny head for the inlets where Bull Redish will be roaming the rocks and structure sniffing out a piece of cut something (crabs, mullet or pogies). Don’t feel like battling jetty groupers, continue past the rocks and head for open water where big silver kings (Tarpon) can be seen crushing pogie pods. A live pogie tossed around the schools should entice ole’ bucket mouth into feeding. Can’t find any Tarpon? No problem start slow trolling the pogies or mullet and see if you can’t find the other King, King Mackerel! Don’t forget to wire up for these toothy critters. Hey look at that shark, wait it’s a Cobia! That’s right, look for Cobia as they tend to be a bit curious and will show up when not expected so have a rod ready with a large artificial paddle tail. Look for Cobia piggy backing on Manta Rays heading back south as long as the water temps allow (71.5 is the magic number). If all fails you can still find huge schools of bruiser Jacks that will test your strength and tackle! Almost forgot, plenty of Spanish Mackerel around as well, trolling spoons or casting plugs will get your live well filled in no time. Capt. MORE FISH, LESS FUEL. The best bottom-fishing spots are the ones that don’t show up on paper or digital charts and aren’t marked on commercially available fishing maps. They’re the forgotten wrecks, the isolated reefs, the ledges hidden between the contour lines — the kinds of places that take hundreds of hours on the water and countless dollars in fuel to find. It’s time to say goodbye to fishing waypoints, and time to start fishing structure with pinpoint accuracy. The revolution of fishing is here, and CMOR Mapping is leading you to privately mapped fishing spots with a visual like never before. CATCHING FISH IS EASIER THAN EVER. Take advantage of the only chart in the world that gives you access to privately surveyed fishing spots, you’ll only find on CMOR Mapping. This high resolution 3D chart unlocks the ability to pre-plan your trips without leaving the dock and then watch your vessel icon move throughout structure on the map using your precise GPS location in realtime as you fish. Not only will users see features they never knew existed — things they have run right past a hundred times — but they’ll also see known features in game-changing detail. Large, dispersed artificial reef areas, for example, come into an entirely new level of focus, with each individual piece of structure clearly visible. With CMOR Mapping, those all-important “spots on the spot” have never been easier to find and navigate to.

By Capt. Tony Bozzella une can get warm so I try to fish early. If the tides low, I look for backing redfish in the shallows. Traditional methods of jig / bait combos. Mullet, shrimp, mud minnows or crab are good choices. Sides of the Intercostal waterway, creek shallows & docks in the river will all hold fish. Normally do not see the schools like winter, but many singles & doubles, & small groups of redfish. Lure fishermen will take their fair share. Top waters are a great morning pick, with Jack’s, trout , & other species at the ready. Mullet imitations are best. Trout fishermen get out early this time of year also for best results. After wind & the sea breeze picks up, the bite seems to fade. Heat of the day, go deeper & with float rigs or bait fish deeper holes. Remember, summer their is bait scattered throughout most areas. If you fish
J
& no results, move & cover water. Same with lure fishing, cover water. Most time your initial casts are the most important. When you have covered an area, move to the spot. After the sun & wind picks up, beach/ near shore fishing is an option. Casting baits to the bait pods can also be a fun way to be productive, with Anglers taking Tarpon, redfish, sharks, jacks, and many other species that lurk around. Tight lines!!. -Capt. une is the month of the kings. King Mackerel that is. The big pods of bait have shown up and any day now the big reels will be singing as the line rips out. Catching these big fish is the pinnacle of pier fishing. The most successful anglers use two rods at once. One is called the mud rod and the other is the trolley rig rod. If you’ve never done this type of fishing it would behoove you to go to your favorite pier and watch and learn before you buy any gear. A few years ago at the Jacksonville Beach pier, over 100 Kings were caught. This type of trolley rig fishing also accounts for nice catches of Barracuda, Cobia, jacks and sharks. Along with the kings feasting on the abundance of bait will be redfish and sea trout. There will also
be nice catches of whiting and pompano in the shallow parts of the pier near the sand bars. Fresh dead shrimp and fresh clams will produce your best chance of having a fish fry. In the surf, it is game on! All the species of shallow water fish are here. You can choose to bait and wait or throw lures. Either way you are going to get some action. When it comes to lures you can’t go wrong with a sliver spoon if the first trough is deep with fairly clean water. Lurking in the trough will be Spanish Mackerel, bluefish, trout, and flounder. If you are on a shallower beach, like Jax or St Aug, then you are better off with a top water plug. Later in the month don’t be surprised if a tarpon crashes your plug. If you want to fill the cooler with some good eats, then bait and wait is the way to go. In the surf the most effective tackle is a double dropper rig. 2/0 circle hooks will catch whiting, reds, blues, drum, pompano, and just about everything else that swims along the bar. FKS, fresh killed shrimp, has proven itself to be the #1 bait. Get out there and have some fun before the dog days of summer kick in!

Fishing Report & Forecast Fernandina / Amelia Island By Terry D. Lacoss
A
melia Island offers some of the best fishing opportunities during the month of June when the warmest water temperatures of the year attract a variety of both deep water, beach, and backwater game fish. Big schools of menhaden will be present along the beaches, which are a huge attraction for fast swimming king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, cobia, and pelagic sharks. Slow trolling live mullet, menhaden, or live bluefish is key for catching tournament size kingfish. Look for the best beach fishing action to come at the southern portion of Amelia Island, in close to the breaking surf and just before a flood tide. When a north wind scatters the schools of bait fish, drop down a barbed piece of shrimp, or cut bait and catch live whiting and blues for live bait fishing. Beach and inlet fishermen can also expect to see a major migration of tarpon, jack crevalle, sharks and king mackerel showing up at the St. Mary’s inlet. The best tide by far is the last few hours of the flooding tide while anchoring up and live baiting at the tip of the St. Mary’s south jetty rocks. Seasoned tarpon, king mackerel and cobia fishermen will attach a large float to their anchor line and when a speedy kingfish or hard fighting tarpon are hooked up, the anchor line is tossed over, and the chase begins!
curly tail are all deadly cobia lures. Sea trout fishing in the backwaters of Amelia Island is excellent during the last three hours of the in-coming tide where clean saltwater is flooding over dock pilings, and oyster beds. A favorite all time Amelia Island trout drop is located west of the Dee Dee Boat Ramp and called “Tiger Basin”. Redfish are tailing during the last hour of the flooding tide where vast spartina marshes shallow up on a flat where numerous oysterbars and small tidal creeks allow reds to migrate in and from the flooding marshes. A good area to look for tailing reds is located just southwest of the “Shave” Bridge and referred to as “Marsh Lakes”.
Tarpon weighing to over one hundred pounds are typically hooked up while fishing with fifty-pound braided fishing line with a four-foot length of sixty-pound monofilament shock leader. A 5/0 circle hook is attached to the tag end of the leader using a “Uni-Knot”. Finally, a fish-finder sleeve is attached to the main line where a light wire is attached to a tear drop weight, using just enough weight to hold the bait on the bottom. Once the tarpon is hooked and leaps from the water, the weight is slung free. A tried-and-true cobia fishing tactic includes running the St. Mary’s buoy line during a flooding tide when water clarity is best. Cobia weighing to over fifty pounds will hold tight to channel markers while prospecting for an easy meal. Here bait fish will hold on the heavy chains that anchor the buoys solid in the strong seas and heavy tides. A 5/0 circle hook barbed through both nostrils of a live eel is a deadly cobia fishing tactic. Also include large live shrimp, fresh squid, live mullet, and menhaden as well. Large dark colored plastic worms, rapalas, and 1-oz. led head jigs rigged with a large chartreuse plastic
Colorful dolphin will highlight Amelia Island’s Bluewater fishing in water depths from 180 to over 1,000-feet of water. Trolling at 6-8 knots with combination of large ballyhoo and blue and white plastic skirted lures is key for dolphin weighing up to 50-pounds. Surf fishermen will be targeting excellent eating whiting, pompano, yellow mouth trout and more. Fishing with fresh shrimp, or sand fleas during a flooding tide is key. Look for some of the best surf fishing action to come where shallow bars offer an ambush point for game fish. Often overlooked, Lofton, Mills, Thomas’, Plumber’s Creeks and the St. Mary’s rivers offer excellent bass fishing during the month of June as well. Look for the last of the falling tide to offer the best action when it arrives during mid-morning. Casting a #11 black and silver rapala, or dark colored plastic worm works best for bass weighing to eight pounds..

JUNE 2021
The month of June is also an excellent month when targeting excellent eating grouper at FA live bottom, tug and barge. One of the better baits for grouper is simply the head of a freshly caught Spanish Mackerel allowed to soak dead on the bottom. Live bait trolling offshore at FA fish haven is also productive for cobia, kingfish, barracuda, Spanish mackerel and the occasional sailfish. Live bait trollers have the option of cast netting menhaden at the St. Mary’s inlet, or jigging up Spanish sardines or cigar minnows at the St. Mary’s “Sea Buoy”.

Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Offshore By Capt. Robert Johnson
The other Snappers I hate that under current regulations we were limited to a fiveday Red Snapper season in 2020.After all they are my favorite fish to catch, not to mention Jodie Lynn’s favorite fish to eat. Luckily for north FL anglers we have other options. We are blessed with awesome Vermillion and Mangrove snapper fishing but to anglers in the know there are other snapper species available. That’s right we have a great Mangrove and Mutton snapper fishery, if you know where to look and what gear to use. Mutton fishing is a deep-water affair with the best fishing occurring just inside the shelf edge in 145 to 165 ft. I use long leaders and I do mean long. 25 to 35 ft. of 50 pound monofilament tied
to a barrel swivel is my normal rig. Use enough weight to get your bait to the bottom not necessarily hold it there. I have done the best when there was a strong current and my bait was drifting along the bottom and covering ground. Anchoring is a must and you need to position your boat well ahead of the spot. You may have to sit for a while until they turn on. Muttons will get off the structure so being dead on the spot isn’t as critical for them as some other species. Whole sardines are my bait of choice and if you can catch some live ones that’s even better. Hook size is number 5 or 6. In addition to Muttons you will catch Mangrove and some giant Vermillion this time of year. Red Porgy, Amberjack, Trigger fish Gag and Scamp Grouper will round out the list of available species. If grouper is your target, I would suggest beefing up your leader to 100#. It will limit the snapper bites but up your odds on landing a Grouper when you get the bite. A live grunt or slab off cut bait would be my bait of choice. June is normally one off the calmer months so enjoy the good weather and great fishing.

Inshore toss your favorite top-water plug at first light for exciting redfish and trout blowups. My favorite topwater plugs are those that have the “walk the dog” type action. Click, clack, click, clack...boom! It’s one of the most exciting ways to catch a redfish or trout this time of year! If you’re not an “early bird” check out the dusk bite using the same lures. The fishing right off the beach really comes alive this time of year. Huge sharks, tarpon, kingfish, and many more will be chowing down on the giant pods of pogies right behind the breakers. It’s a great time to put your heavier tackle to the test! When looking to catch some redfish be on the lookout for concentrations of finger mullet or pogies on the flats. You can be
guaranteed that at least a redfish or two will be hanging nearby a big pod of baitfish this time of year. During the higher tide stages one of my favorite lures to toss this time of year is the spinner bait as it nicely mimics a flashing finger mullet. The water is murky right now and the bright flash of the spinners blade and the thump it creates while going through the water will be sure to get the fishes attention. On the lower tide stages a lot of the bigger fish will move to slightly deeper water where it’s a little cooler. Any kind of live or chunked bait will work well for reds, trout, and flounder when fishing deeper. A scented soft plastic like those from Fishbites fished very, very slow will also be a good bet. The flounder bite should be good at the St. Augustine and Mantanzas inlets and just about all the regular inshore flatty haunts. Fishing around the slack tides will give you the best chance to get your bait on the bottom where the flounder hide. Small to medium sized finger mullet on a fish finder rig can be deadly... Don’t be afraid to use a good sized mullet to catch the doormats… just remember to let the flounder chew on the bait a few moments before setting the hook. One of my favorite fish, the tarpon, should be thick along the beach gorging themselves on the bait (pogy) pods just about now. The best bite will be early morning and just before or after the afternoon summer rainstorms. Rig a live pogy on a large 6/0-10/0 circle hook and fish the outside of the bait pods. Sometimes a little weight to help the pogy get down will help. After a somewhat slow start to the cobia season last month it might be worth an extra look around the pogy pods just in case there’s a brown bomber still lurking around. Capt. Vince Cornell’s Blue Waters Sport Fishing Charters; Northeast Florida’s Ultimate Premier Offshore Sport Fishing Experience! By Terry Newsome
I
f there is one universal truth and recurring theme among the great business legends throughout American history it is simply this: “nothing can stop the power of an idea and vision whose time has come;” and for successful businessman, financial investment expert and offshore sport fishing enthusiast, Vince Cornell, that time is NOW! I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Vince Cornell (owner and Founder of Blue Waters Sport Fishing Charters) and was genuinely impressed beyond measure! Driven by his purpose, Vince is a highly respected successful businessman and financial genius. His passion for blue water sport fishing is truly inspiring and his brilliant vision to create the ultimate offshore fishing charter experience will revolutionize the blue water sportfishing charter industry! “Blue Waters is the ultimate sportfishing charter for serious offshore fishermen,” Vince proudly proclaims, “and our custom, ultra-fast 39-foot SeaVee charter boat has all of the bells and whistles to make every charter trip one of the best experiences our charter quests will ever have. We have thought of everything to deliver the ultimate charter experience. Whether our clients and guests are looking for a full day of deep-sea fishing, or are looking to host business clients, we have the technology and expertise to accommodate all of our guests’ requests.” I was so excited during my interview with Vince, I was compelled to revisit the impressive website that Vince created to fully explain his vision for delivering the ultimate Blue Waters charter and Gulf Stream deep-sea fishing experience. The website content, user navigation and overall quality is perhaps the best I have ever seen in the charter industry and the photo gallery is truly a sight to behold! In summary, (according to the website at www.bluewaterssportfishing.com) Blue Waters Sportfishing Charters provides for up to six guests per trip in a unique all day customer experience by fishing the continental shelf located around sixty miles offshore from Amelia Island. The continental shelf (referred to as “the ledge”) is covered by the crystal blue waters of the gulf stream which holds a fishery that offers a wide variety of different species for year-round fishing. The ledge tends to hold much larger fish than off/near-shore wrecks. Because of the variety of species in this fishery, clients will be able to experience different types of fishing techniques. A typical trip will consist of trolling for seasonal large game fish and bottom fishing with live or dead bait. It is typical for guests to bring back the day’s catch to fill a freezer. The 39-foot custom SeaVee with triple Yamaha 350’s safely transports clients and guests 60 miles offshore to the Gulf Stream fishing grounds quickly so there is more time fishing. Blue Waters Sportfishing Charters has created an inclusive experience by providing a catered lunch with a cooler full of your choice of beverages. Clients and guests just need to show up and be ready to fish. Blue Waters can provide multi day or weeklong charters for families or corporate events. Blue Waters is also licensed and insured for fishing the Bahama islands. The Blue Waters 1 can meet clients in the Bahamas for some great fishing. 39-FOOT CUSTOM SEAVEE CHARTER BOAT “Our premier 39-foot custom SeaVee Charter Boat is fully equipped and has everything to make the Blue Waters charter experience safe and comfortable for our clients and guests,” Vince explains, “including triple 350 HP Yamaha outboards, a head and shower, 550 Gallons of fuel, 56 Gallons of fresh water, a Simrad Radar System, Twin VHF, Twin Simrad EVO 3, CMOR Mapping, Sirus Weather, GOST GPS Emergency Locator, Thales Vessel Link Sat Phone and Internet, and more. We also know how important it is for our charter guests to stay connected at sea during their charter. That’s why Blue Waters is equipped with the Thales 68 NORTHEAST FLORIDA

VesseLINK powered by Iridium. Whether you’re an executive needing to check voice mail or read an important email or you just need to check in with the family, VesseLINK does the trick so our clients and guests can connect their smartphone devices to the onboard Wi-Fi and make calls, check emails and send texts. It also contains many other features to make sure our charter guests have the conveniences they need to communicate, as well as the at-sea protection they need in the event of any emergencies.” If you want to enjoy the fresh seafood you caught during your amazing Blue Waters Sport Fishing Charter, Vince has got your covered with multiple options! “Our crew is professionally trained in the proper fish cleaning technic,” Vince proudly proclaims, “and your catch will be filet, skinned, portioned, and packaged. Once cleaning is complete your catch will be pack in ice in a take-home Bluewater’s cooler. We will

provide as many coolers as needed for your group.” As an additional option to enjoy the “catch of the day” from your chart experience, Vince has developed an exciting and unique “catch and cook” gourmet seafood dining option for you to complete the ultimate charter experience aboard the Blue Waters 1! “At the end of a successful day of fishing with the Blue Waters crew, we have arranged for you to take your fresh catch to the end of the dock to Kitchen 251 and let Chef Michael prepare a wonderful meal for a small fee for you and your guests,” say Vince, “and Kitchen 251 specializes in down-home comfort food overlooking the Amelia Island Marina. Kitchen 251 is a local favorite with amazing food and beautiful views of the Amelia River. There is no better way to cap off a successful fishing charter than by eating the very fish you just caught!” Driven by his vision, Vince knew that an essential key to delivering the ultimate offshore fishing experience for ALL charter clients and guests was to find the perfect, fully licensed Captain with a pedigree of blue water sportfishing experience, commercial fishing credentials and a genuine passion to serve each client to the fullest. After an exhaustive search, Vince found Captain Brandon Ingalls and together, they are making a profound impact on the blue water sport fishing charter industry (including finishing in the Top-12 in a recent Northeast Florida Wahoo Fishing Tournament.) “Blue Waters employs one of the best and most experienced fishing captains in Amelia Island,” Vince passionately reveals. “Captain Brandon Ingalls is a humble, respectful and extremely talented off-shore fishing expert. Captain Ingalls has a special knack for finding quality fish and making sure our charter guests are having a great time! In fact, the second fish Captain put on the deck of the Blue Waters 1 was a 72-inch, 86-pound Cobia!” MORE ABOUT CAPTAIN BRANDON INGALLS Captain Brandon Ingalls is a North East Florida native and proud of it. He grew up fishing our local waters as well as exploring most of the fisheries Florida has to offer. After graduating from Florida State University, he knew his future office could only be one place: the water. “I began commercial fishing on my 20ft Pathfinder and then with a 28ft Contender. I loved fishing the ledge bottom. Recently, I spent six months in the Caribbean living and working on a private 59’ Spencer yacht and traveled to the Dominican Republic, Antigua, and back to St. Thomas chasing blue marlin all summer! In fact, I worked as a mate on the Da Bait which released over 100 blue marlin in the Atlantic
that year including blue marlin in the 700 pound class. I really missed fishing the local waters of Northeast Florida and decided to move back to Jacksonville, Florida to start my own charter business and continue my dream of putting people on a fish of their lifetime.” When Captain Brandon Ingalls first met Vince Cornell, he knew with absolute certainty that he was on the verge of turning dreams into reality. “When I first met Vince Cornell, I was extremely impressed with him both personally and professionally,” Captain Brandon Ingalls remembers, “and I was equally impressed with his vision to deliver the ultimate offshore experience and premier Gulf Stream deep-sea fishing adventure. Vince sincerely believes in his vision and spared no expense in providing the very best charter boat with our lightning fast SeaVee 39-foot Center Console with triple Yamaha 350’s and state of the art technology and electronic equipment. We are able to quickly reach the Florida Gulf Stream It is truly a great honor and privilege to have the opportunity to execute on Vince Cornell’s vision. Vince and I are so excited to offer our clients a variety of different highly successful fishing techniques including conventional trolling, high-speed trolling, targeted jigging, bottom fishing, chum fishing and more! We target many different species of fish including Blue Marlin, Wahoo, Cobia, Snapper, Grouper and more.” Whether you are a serious offshore fisherman, a business who wants to book the ultimate fishing charter for their important clients or a family who just loves to fish offshore, I highly recommend that to contact Blue Waters Sportfishing at 251 Creekside Dr. Dock C, Fernandina Beach, Fl. at 904-206-6798 or send an e-mail to info@bluewaterssportfishing. com. I can assure you that Vince Cornell and Captain Brandon Ingalls will make sure it will be a blue water offshore charter experience you will always remember! With over 25 years of corporate experience as a writer, director and producer, Terry Newsome has personally filmed and produced over 100 outdoor television shows and instructional fishing videos internationally. He is an avid coastal angler and is a former co-owner of Pine Island Fish Camp on the Intracoastal Waterway just north of St. Augustine, Florida.

species, but let’s explore the topic a little deeper. The reasoning behind making a certain type noise with your cork is to imitate the sound of fish busting bait on the surface. In the case of striped bass and snook, they make a popping sound when they eat a bait on the surface, as opposed to a speckled trout that “slurps” a bait off the surface or a red drum that has a mouth on the Tim Barefoot underside of its head and has to get on top of a bait to eat it. ast month, FWC sawfish biologists responded to sawfish hotline reports of two large smalltooth sawfish that died in the Florida Keys. Sawfish are shark-like rays named for their saw-shaped snouts. With dramatic reductions in their numbers and range over the years, they are listed as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act. They are regularly found only in southwest Florida, especially around Everglades National Park. One of the two dead sawfish in the Keys was a mature 16-foot female that weighed an estimated 800-1,000 pounds. The other was an immature female measuring 12 feet, 4 inches long and weighing an estimated 400-500 pounds. The 16-foot sawfish is the longest measured by scientists since research began on the species. There was no obvious cause of death for either sawfish; however, valuable life history information was and will continue to be collected from both carcasses due to the swift response from Keys-based FWC staff and Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office. Sawfish biologists are working to learn as much as possible from samples. For example, the vertebrae will be used to determine the ages of both sawfish, the DNA will be sequenced to compare to other sawfish that have been studied throughout Florida, and the length at maturity for females will be fine-tuned based on these data. If you see or catch a sawfish, report it by calling 844-4SAWFISH or e-mailing sawfish@myfwc.com

HOOKER ELECTRIC DELUXE LIVEWELL SEA CHEST
H
4500 Bait Bump 1.5" connection
ooker Electric’s Deluxe Livewell Sea Chests are essentially plumbed boxes installed in the bilge by the boat builder or dealer. One or two supplies fill the sea chest that contains two to four livewell pumps that, in turn, deliver clean, bubble-free seawater to the individual bait livewells. There are many advantages to this type of system. It helps remove air and prevent air locks, especially if you have a lot of aeration with stepped hulls. With the pumps mounted outside, you have more volume of water and the ease of swapping a pump quickly should the need arise. Hooker Electric’s Deluxe Livewell Sea Chests are manufactured with corrosive-resistant 316L stainless steel and powder coated for extra protection. They are affixed on top with ¾” thick high-grade acrylic for quick visual inspection. Stainless steel boxes are simply more durable than the mainstream “X” fiberglass competitor models. Precision tapped seal ring and neoprene gaskets combined with stainless steel fasteners assure a lifetime of use in the corrosive saltwater environment. Hooker Electric’s 2,500-, 4,500- and 7,500-gallons-per-hour pumps are variable flow and can run multiple livewells and tuna tubes through a Hooker Electric manifold. Hooker Electric’s Sea Chest simplifies the entire system. It allows you to run all your livewells and raw water feed from one system. HYDRASTEPP’S NEW 18’ FLATS-BOAT By CAM Orlando Owner Phil Wolf
T
he new Hydrastepp 18’ is a high-performance flats boat resulting from years of trial and improvement by renowned racing boat designer/ builder Steve Stepp. With 35 years in the industry, Stepp racked up 14 world records with his company, Velocity Powerboats, of Sanford, Fla. His advanced designs achieve performance and efficiency most manufacturers are unable to match. His latest venture, Hydrastepp Boats, manufactures this new vessel in Lake Mary, Fla. As owner and co-publisher of the Orlando edition of Coastal Angler Magazine, I wanted to see if Stepp’s newest production vessel could measure up to claims made in their advertisement with us. Eager to climb aboard, I met Stepp at Lake Monroe and the I-4 Bridge on the St. Johns River. The boat was equipped with a 140 hp Suzuki 4-stroke with half tank of gas,
Coast Guard-required equipment and a modest amount of gear. Stepp said it would get on plane in less than three seconds with both of us in it. Each of us weighs more than 200 pounds, and it did just that… effortlessly. Heading into a moderate quartered-sea chop at about 32 to 34 mph, the ride was extremely smooth and incredibly dry. With those boxes checked, we returned to calm water in the river. This boat has a large gunnel and a 94” beam, extremely wide for an 18’ boat. It was very stable when I walked around on the gunnel. It has a huge storage compartment up front, with a removable tackle-storage system, and two large storage compartments in the rear. There are front and rear livewells. The custom, divided sport seat with a removable backrest is like those on offshore racing boats. The console is sleek and sports a 9” monitor screen/fish-finder/ GPS and all the normal gauges: tachometer, water pressure, temperature, gas, speed by GPS, all linked to the motor and fuel system. Very cool! This boat gets up to 10 mpg while cruising between 30 and 32 mph at 3,400 to 3,600 rpms. Back in the river, we cruised at about 32 mph and the monitor read 3,400 rpms. Then Stepp hammered the throttle, and the boat quickly achieved over 65 mph at 6,200 rpms with a little throttle left. It was very impressive for a stock 140 hp engine with a rear poling platform creating drag. I jumped at the chance to drive back to the ramp. Once acquainted with the throttle and trim, I drove with confidence. Cruising over 55 mph, we only burned about 6 gallons per hour on the gauge. This boat also floats in 10” or less and has room for four anglers with a huge front deck. If you’re in the market for a flats boat, the new Hydrastepp is worth a test ride. Hydrastepp is taking production orders, so get in line! This vessel is nicely equipped at around $60,000 for boat, 115 hp motor and custom trailer by Ameratrail. Or, you can upgrade to the fully loaded version with a 140 hp for $75,000. See this boat online at www.HYDRASTEPP.com.

Angler Lands World Record Shellcracker
W
hen sunfish get this big, are they still considered panfish? On Tuesday, May 4, Thomas Farchione, of Wisconsin, caught this 6.3-pound redear sunfish at Lake Havasu on the Arizona/ California border. The fish, which measured 17 inches in length, with a 20inch girth, is a potential world record if accepted by the International Game Fish Association. The existing IGFA All-Tackle World Record was caught in Feb. 2014 by Hector Brito. It weighed 5-pounds, 12.8 ounces (5.8 pounds). Brito’s fish was also caught from Lake Havasu. Wait… it gets better. Before Brito caught his fish, the world record for redear was 5 pounds, 8 ounces. Can you guess where it was caught? You got it. In May of 2011 Robert Lawler landed a 5-pound, 8-ounce record redear at Lake Havasu to set the mark at the time. Obviously, this 19,300-acre impoundment of the Colorado River has earned its reputation as the best place in the world to catch enormous redear sunfish, which are also known as shellcrackers because they feed on snails, mussels and other mollusks using teeth in their throat to crush the shells. According to USA Today, invasive quagga mussels were discovered in Havasu in 2007. The fast-spreading mussels have provided an abundant food source to grow the largest shellcrackers in the world. Farchione caught his monster redear drop-shotting a nightcrawler in 25 feet of water. For more information, see www.azgfd.com.

FROG FISHING FOR HUNGRY POST-SPAWN BASS

hat a fun time of year to fish! In most parts of the country, bass are finishing up with spawning. This leads to awesome fishing as bass feed up after coming off the beds. You will find very aggressive fry guarders, often times a shad spawn, and also fish roaming the banks feeding on bluegill and other forage. There are many ways to catch these hungry and aggressive bass, and a hollow-body frog is one of the most fun and effective techniques. A frog duplicates many different types of baitfish, it can be fished through a wide variety of cover, and it flat out puts big fish in the boat! There are many different styles, sizes and colors of frogs on the market. When choosing, think about the forage, the type of cover and the size of fish you are targeting. My favorite frog is a 13 Fishing Trash Panda. It comes in a walking model and a popping model in a variety of colors.

A fry guarder is a bass guarding a big ball of tiny bass hatchlings. These bass are extremely aggressive and territorial and will chase and eat pretty much any fish that gets near the babies. In this scenario, I go down banks through areas where bass have recently spawned. I stay off the cover and cast a frog through it. I like a bluegill-colored walking frog in this scenario, which means the lure will have a yellow or orange belly. Bluegill are a common nemesis to the bass and their fry. This color pattern drives bass crazy when they spot it near their babies. Often, you can find a shad spawn in the low light of early mornings and evenings. Look for birds lined up along the banks to find spawning shad. The shad often relate to hard cover (rocks and wood), grass lines and slow tapering points. A shad-colored popping frog in a white or silver color is an awesome lure to pick up bass feeding on shad. With the hollow-body frog being so weedless, it can be thrown where many other baits would get hung up. These are the places where shad spawns occur. A hollow-body frog is an awesome way to cover a lot of water, and it can produce some extremely fun topwater strikes. Whether you’re targeting late spawners, fry guarders or fish that are on the feed, a frog puts fish in the boat this time of year. Frog Fishing Gear: Typically, you will be fishing a frog around some type of heavy cover, which calls for some heavy gear. I like to throw a 13 Fishing 7’4H Omen Black rod paired with a Concept A 8.3 reel spooled with Seaguar 50-pound Smackdown braid. This setup allows you to haul fish out of heavy cover and into the boat! Tyler Woolcott is a professional tournament angler and guide. Check out his website at www.tylerwoolcottfishing.com. E-Z ANCHOR PULLER MFG. CO. DEBUTS NEW PRODUCTS IN 2021 New Offers Include Pre-Spooled Rope Kits, Bowsprits and a Break-Away Anchor Design
A
fter 30-plus years of specializing in the windlass-replacement anchoring solution, E-Z Anchor Puller debuts its branded anchoring products engineered to suit each drum anchor winch. Widely used anchoring accessories such as hawse pipes, bowsprits, guide rollers and more have been added to the catalog, manufactured specifically to accommodate the Hero, Patriot and Rebel drum anchor winches. “To offer improved level winding of the rode onto the drum, we now have 4-inch wide flat rollers that let the rode wander back and forth to create a better spooling onto the drum,” said company President Aaron Knopp. “The 4-inch wide flat rollers allow more travel to ensure the rope is not centered onto the drum.” “We knew our catalog needed to include inventory totally unique to our drum anchor winch dimensions,” said Sara Hitchins, Office & Trade Show Manager. “The standard anchoring accessories you see on the market now cater to the traditional windlass, for example, narrower guides on the roller, however, narrower guide rollers mean pile-up in the middle of the winch.” Hitchins said the company’s expanded inventory will enhance boaters’ experiences on
the water, as well as improve the buying process for customers who prefer a “one-stop-shop” experience over researching and selecting other brand accessories. “For a while, we’ve identified ourselves as the drum anchor winch experts, but really, having dealt with various consultations and unique boating experiences over the years, we’ve really become boat anchoring experts along the way,” Hitchins said. Two other notable products, the Shear Magic galvanized plow anchor and the pontoon anchoring solution are also on sale. The 15-, 22and 35-pound anchors were designed with a shear pin designed to break, so boaters no longer have to worry about cutting away their anchor rope and anchor when they get caught in coral reefs or other obstructions on the seabed. With the pontoon anchoring solution, an under-deck mounted configuration utilizes the structural integrity of the pontoon and is powered by the drum anchor winch. To further compliment the
catalog, the company will begin offering spools of anchor rope in July, 2021, further eliminating guesswork and wait time for customers. Vice President Christy Funk said the pre-cut nylon and dyneema will be shipped the same day as the customer’s anchor winch. “We’ve offered consultations on winch size and appropriate rope configurations based on boating needs for years,” said Funk, “so it’s exciting to be able to provide them with what they need right off the bat, when they need it, rather than ordering the winch first, then ordering the rope and having to wait for that.” E-Z Anchor Puller will attend the in-person ICAST boat show, July 20 at Booth 3817 as well as the 30th anniversary IBEX show in late September, Booth 3-2130. The “Trade Only” Tampa-based event caters to marine industry professionals and is “dedicated to advancing the business of boating.” For information, go to www.ezanchorpuller.com.

n April, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council approved a slight increase in the annual catch limit for red snapper for 2021. It’s nowhere near the increase some expected after the Congressionally funded Great Red Snapper Count (GRSC) indicated an abundance of red snapper far higher than estimates being used to set regulations in the fishery. The Gulf Council’s scientific review committee chose not to include GRSC data in its 2021 acceptable catch recommendation. However, the Gulf Council requested catch level recommendations for 2021 and beyond be revisited with consideration of the GRSC final report. The Gulf red snapper season for federally permitted vessels is June 1-Aug. 2. Each Gulf state sets its own season for private recreational angling and charter operations without federal permits. Check state regulations for gear and reporting requirements. The daily limit is two fish per person, with a 16-inch minimum size, except in Texas state waters, where the limit is four fish per person with a 15-inch minimum size. State seasons are as follows: Florida: June 4-July 28. Alabama: Four-day weekends, Fridays-Mondays, beginning May 28 and continuing until the private angler quota is projected to be met. Mississippi: Opened Friday, May 28, with an expected mid-season closure on July 5 to compile data and examine the potential for a season extension. Louisiana: Weekends only (Friday-Sunday), including Memorial Day, Labor Day and the 4th of July regardless of the day of the week; Season subject to change. Texas: Open year-round in state waters until the quota is met.

Parkit360°: The Ultimate Trailer Parking Solution
S
ave the parking headaches—one-shot your boat into position every time with one of Parkit360’s electric trailer dollies. The Force and Transformer models are compatible with almost every trailer right out of the box thanks to their ball-mounted Stablelock technology. Just freewheel the dolly to the trailer, connect to the hitch and steer your trailer into place. With weight capacities ranging from 5,000 to 15,000 pounds, these portable powerhouses can handle the most difficult parking challenges with ease. Unlike a driver who relies on mirrors and backup cameras, the user faces the trailer, giving them complete visibility and control while parking. See exactly where the trailer is at all times and steer within inches of any obstacle if needed. Park in ways that were once impossible with a truck, and have the flexibility to move around the trailer at any time to check its position. The dolly’s compact design also allows the user to park hitchend forward as a serious theft deterrent, something that is nearly impossible to do with a vehicle. All models include Intelligent Speed Control, a great feature for those looking to move through open areas quickly, and more precisely in tight spaces. The high and low speed option starts and stops the motor gradually to prevent potential damage from sudden movements, something that makes these dollies stand out above the competition. Switch speeds any time during parking and get things done faster! Have a unique trailer hitch on your boat
trailer? Easily move any ball mounted, fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer up to 15,000 pounds with our standard adapters, or try the Telescopic Hitch Adapter. It’s a non-invasive, alternative connection point that bolts around your existing trailer frame. Parkit360° dollies are built strong and secure to safely move on firm grass, packed gravel, and 4- to 6-percent inclines. Want a Dolly that’s ready to park, right out of the box? Most models include a 12V U1 Interstate Battery with all required cables and hardware. With existing features like the Built-in Battery Charger, Electric/Surge Brake Controller and a full 2 Year Warranty, Parkit360° has truly made parking simple for every trailer.
