very year in Basel, Switzerland, the world’s best-known luxury watchmakers gather to display their new timepieces. It’s a great event for spotting timepieces that standout–– in performance and in personality. We saw one impossible to ignore: a precision dive watch with an arresting green dial. But we also saw the five-figure price tag and knew we could bring our customers that exact same precision and stand out appeal for a whole lot less. The Stauer Evergreen Diver is that timepiece. Built like a submersible battleship with a stainless steel case, caseback, and band, the Evergreen Diver is water-resistant down to 660 feet or 20 atmospheres, a feat facilitated by a hardened crystal and screw-down crown.

“Whether you’re looking for something to wear in the ocean, the office, and everywhere in between, a diver’s watch is for you.”

Green On Your Wrist AND In Your Pocket. You could pay an awful lot elsewhere for this verdant virtuoso, but the majority of the cost is in the big designer name upcharge. We think those guys are all wet. This is how you own a top-of-the-line dive watch without helping pay for some marketing guy’s yacht.

inter fishing in the Florida Keys can be a double-edged sword. This time of year can be limited by more frequent windy days. However, some of our best fishing occurs very close to land this time of year, and you don’t have to go far to get into the heart of it. Snapper are always a viable option on the reef, and targeting them also provides the opportunity to fill up the livewell with fresh ballyhoo to use for sailfish, which will be showering bait under diving frigates. If you happen to get out there on a sporty day, and the thought of rocking on anchor first thing in the morning makes your stomach turn, wahoo might be a better option. Trolling lures can be productive for targeting wahoo, and reduces the rocking of the boat that causes seasickness. Utilizing deep-diving lures, planers and trolling sinkers, there are countless ways to set up an efficient wahoo spread that can be pulled at varying speeds. Since wahoo like their baits moving quickly, high-speed trolling is a great way to target them while lessening other species as bycatch. Another great option for wahoo fishing is using live bait. This method is more exciting, and uses bait that can be acquired without dropping anchor. With wahoo rigs already set with wire leaders, and extra prerigged leaders on hand, head out to the wrecks to catch fresh bait. When targeting bigger baits like bonita, blue runners and goggle eyes for wahoo, use a heavier rod and reel, with the appropriately overpowered sabiki rig. Accounting for tangles, breakoffs and unwanted mackerel attention, make sure to have more than a few extra sabiki rigs on board. Affix a weight to the sabiki and drop it down to fill the well with blue runners, or troll the sabiki over schools of bonita, hooking them immediately to the wahoo rig and sending them back out. Power drift or bump troll a spread of live baits with some weightless, flatlined on the surface, or even under a kite, and others at varying depths with a breakaway weight or downrigger. Watching a hungry wahoo skyrocket on a surface bait provides all the adrenaline needed to knock any lingering seasickness out of you. Wahoo are excellent table fare, and they are also one of the best fighting fish you can target. Keep in mind that if your line goes slack, they might be swimming toward the boat. It is a wahoo until it’s not a wahoo, so keep reeling until you see the end of your line. Charter fishing in the Florida Keys is busy during the winter, so make sure to book your charter in advance. Sweet E’nuf Charters offers gift certificates for all the Santas out there with fishermen in the family. Capt. Quinlyn Haddon, of Sweet E’nuf Charters, operates out of Marathon, Florida Keys. troll up WINTERTIME SLAB CRAPPIE C

By Nick Carter

old water makes catching fish more difficult, right? Not with crappie, according to allaround outdoorswoman Terrie Huffmaster. She looks forward to deep winter, when she can load the boat with the biggest slabs of the year. Huffmaster is a South Georgia farm girl from Quitman, way down on the Florida border, so she calls crappie speckled perch, or specks for short. “You catch the bigger specks in wintertime,” she said. “I like to go into the deeper water trolling for them.” A great thing about crappie is they’re predictable. In spring they move shallow to spawn, but throughout the rest of the year they are nomads in search of comfortable water temperatures. You’ll always find them near structure or cover, and they are usually schooled up tightly. Huffmaster fishes for specks on Lake

Seminole, a nearly 40,000-acre impoundment that straddles the Georgia/Florida border. It’s a relatively shallow lake, full of stumps, brush and submerged grass. When Huffmaster says “deeper water,” she means the deepest water Seminole has, which is 25 to 30 feet. Trolling delivers both quality and quantity when water temps are in the mid to high 50s. But Huffmaster isn’t looking for a 30-fish limit. She’s hunting 10 or so giant specks in the 15- to 18inch range. She catches a lot of smaller fish in the process, but she throws those back. “When you get on ’em good, it’s crazy how

many you can catch,” she said. This is how she gets on them: Huffmaster has a line she trolls that she’s identified on electronics and with previous success. It’s just outside a channel marker, where there’s a ton of submerged trees, stumps and other brush and debris to hold fish. She pulls jigs over deep water and up over humps and ledges that rise to as little as 5 feet. “You keep that trolling motor on low,” she said, “just enough where your line’s pulling, where you’re barely trolling.” Huffmaster said there’s no need to deploy huge spreads from a bank of rod holders. She fishes just one, maybe two rods at a time. Her favorites are a lightweight Mr. Crappie Slab Shaker combo and a Lew’s 6-foot Ultra Light with a Lazer Light Speed Spin 75 reel. She spools up with 8-to 10-pound braided main line and uses a 4- or 6-pound fluorocarbon leader tied to a 1/16-ounce Crappie Magnet Fin Spin or a Mr. Crappie jig head. Paddletail and curly tail bodies both have their place. Chartreuse/pearl and pumpkin are good colors. She trolls her jigs 10 to 15 feet behind the boat and keeps a loose drag so the hook doesn’t tear out of a crappie’s paper-thin mouth. “Call me old fashioned, but that’s how we do it,” she said. “And we don’t seem to have any problem catching a mess of them… and some big ones. Which Would You Change First? By Capt. Michael Okruhlik

C

hange is inevitable. In all aspects of life, change is necessary. This is especially true for anglers. When things are not going right, we immediately think of the next lure to throw. We all embark on our fishing journeys with a plan before hitting the water. We may base it on predicted conditions, time of year, experience, or possibly, but hopefully not, a social media post. Let’s discuss what I would do when plan-A doesn’t produce as envisioned. Imagine we are in the perfect looking spot, conditions are exactly as planned, active bait is visible in the area, the tide is flowing, but nothing is biting. Most of us would make a change, and I think we are all in agreement that our first correction would not be to move with everything looking right. Now, here is where I feel most people will make a mistake. Let’s say we are throwing soft-plastic paddletails. What is the first thing you would change?

PHOTO COURTESY OF KNOCKIN TAIL LURES®.

SIZE OR COLOR:

I bet you said color. Am I right? During my decades of fishing the salty bays and marsh, I’ve found that color is the last thing I should change. If some bass fishermen are reading this article, I am solely basing this theory on saltwater for trout, redfish and flounder. It’s not your fault that you tend to change color first. Let’s face it, color is the first thing someone mentions when they describe the lure they used, and when we walk into the tackle aisle there are significantly more colors than lure choices or sizes. We are bombarded with so many colors. Color must be the key to catching, right? Well, maybe not, most of the time. I’ll use my lure brand for an example. I produce 34 unique colors, but I only produce three different sized paddletails. Having all these color options at our fingertips can be overwhelming, and hearing others focus on the color that landed

the big one has caused fishermen to focus on color first. I have found more success in changing the size of the lure over the color. The fish are typically not feeding on anything that resembles the color we are throwing, but they are feeding on a specific size that we have in our box. Matching the forage size is the better option. If that doesn’t produce a bite, then I will even switch the style of lure before the color in most situations. Ultra-clear water is an exception, and these conditions play by different rules. We can cover that in another article, but until then focus less on color and more on size and action. Take a kid fishing and enjoy the outdoors. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Knockin Tail Lures®, and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

GTECHNIQ:

Wax on Boats is Old Tech

C

an you wax your 17’ to 20’ boat inside and out in 30 minutes or less? I can tell you first-hand that it is possible, but to do it you’ve got to forget about wax and get with the times. Gtechniq’s ceramic coatings are the technologically advanced way to get great results with less time and effort. I tested it on an 11-year-old Key West 1720, and this author will never go back to wax. Wax is old technology. Do you have a rotary phone? Do you use a pager? What about a flip phone? We have new technologies available. Once

you learn of a new spray-on coating that provides three months of shine and UV protection, would you still wax-on/wax-off? With a $20 bottle of Rinse-on Ceramic, you can get shiny results in 30 minutes! First you need to start with a very clean boat. Remove stains and buff out the dull surfaces, then follow with a good scrubbing with bleach in soapy water to remove all previous wax if any is still present. Hook up the spray nozzle in the Gtechniq Rinse-on Ceramic kit to the water hose and screw on a bottle of Rinse-on. The red knob adjusts material flow and it’s recommended to run it wide open. All you do is rinse the boat with water, and then turn on the material flow to apply the ceramic coating. You’ll see a slight sudsy effect letting you know material is being applied. Rinse boat inside and out with material flow open all the way. After the first application, you will want to wipe the boat down with microfiber towels. That’s it! Spray down the cleaned boat and wipe off in 30 minutes or less! Plus, there is an added benefit: you get a thin UV coating on all your hardware, lighting, switches, console gauges and expensive electronics. Wax is now a cuss word to this author. Application is quick and easy, but what about the results? Three months and 10 trips in saltwater later, and you can still feel the coating. What about a slippery deck? Nope. The stippled deck on the Key West is not slippery after application. It is ready for another application, yet the only part of the boat that doesn’t look new and shiny is the area under waterline. Beneath the waterline did stay clean for two months, but now it has slight yellowing. This 11-year-old vessel needs a light buff under the waterline. The coating is still there, and water beads/sheets off, but stains are caught in the tiny pores evidenced by the dull appearance. This stuff is pretty amazing, and this author will never waxon/wax-off again! GTECHNIQ.COM

Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Inshore By Capt. Tommy Derringer

M

y favorite time of year to catch redfish is here! Cooler water temps mean clearer water for Northeast Florida and that means it’s time to sight-fish. When the water gets down in the lower 60’s is can result in clearer water and some exciting fishing opportunities. Cooler water also means that redfish will be schooled up both on the flats and in the deeper creek holes. Black drum, trout, and sheepshead will also be schooled up in the same areas. If you can get out on a nice sunny day over the next couple of months you better go because the fishing will be on fire! We’ll have some good low tides coming up which means easy pickings for schooled up fish of all kinds. These extra low, low tides will concentrate fish down to the deeper parts of the creeks and flats. Fish the last hour or so of the outgoing tide with a 1/4oz Bass Assassin jig and just about anything live or artificial pegged to it and you’re sure to get hooked up. Hard bends in the creeks will have the deepest holes. Some creeks may have a shallow mouth but don’t be afraid to do some exploring, as some of the best creek holes are pretty far back in there. If you’re unsure of the depth or afraid of getting stuck, just wait until the tide goes slack and then starts pushing in. That way you’ll know if you can make it in,

you can make it back out as long as the tide is still coming in. Then next time you’ll have a better idea of where your boat can and can’t go. On days when the sun is shining, locating large schools of redfish on the flats can be a sure thing this time of year. The sun allows you to see in the water so make sure you keep it at your back if possible. Redfish will tend to hang out on flats that hold bait, have easy access to deeper water, and have areas that warm up quickly. Flats with an abundance of oysters are a good place to start, as they tend to cover most of the above-mentioned criteria. Once you locate the school, approach as stealthily as possible. Drifting and/or poling the boat are best but using the trolling motor can catch our fish as well. Just keep it slow and at a constant speed. This is also a good time of year to downsize your baits a bit as clear water tends to mean spookier redfish. My favorite sightfishing bait for redfish is a 1/4oz or 1/8oz Saltwater Assassin jighead with a Saltwater Assassin paddle tail. The size and action seem to be just right for our wintertime reds. Sheepshead fishing will be in full swing by now. Just about any bridge piling or jetty rock with barnacles on it will be holding some sheepies. The go-to bait is a fiddler crab on a small j-hook or jighead. Fish the pilings and rocks vertically with enough weight to hold the bait close to the structure. Just remember they’re quick so you’ll need to be on your hook-setting game. The old saying goes, “You have to set the hook before they bite”! Capt. Fishing Report & Forecast Mayport By Capt. Kirk Waltz

I

Look for the weather pattern we have had to change pretty quickly as we move into December. Cold weather will influence our fishery this month by dropping our consistent November temperatures which have stayed in the high 60’s to 70’s dropping them into the low 60’s and the high 50’s. These are perfect to school up reds at the big rocks along with sheepshead, blues, ring-tailed porgies, black drum , and trout from the Carrier Basin entrance all the way to both tips. We need the change and its appearance marks our winter fishery. Live shrimp on jigs or floats will capture ample numbers of reds, ringtails, sheepshead and trout. The better tides are the clear high outgoing tides to the dead low. Good numbers of sheepshead are going to be around so try fishing the rocks with a light short shank sheepshead jig or Carolina rig with fiddlers being your bait of choice. They love these little crabs and reds will attack them too! If you are trying to catch a few black drum try soaking shrimp or cut/quartered blue crab on the bottom at the very

tips of the rocks at low tide for best results. It wouldn’t hurt to check the beach for pogies as they have stayed around all thru November. The bull red spawn should be going well and they love fresh live pogies. High incoming has been a great producer for me on the very ends of the rocks fishing the down slope sides as the rocks drop to the sand. Sheepshead have been on the feed thru November and this pattern hasn’t slowed down any. Look for the ICW both north and south of the St. John’s River basin to produce good numbers of trout this month. High outgoing tides are great times to throw Gulp Baits on 1/oz jig heads along the edges of oyster bars. My favorite color is new penny as it closely resembles a shrimp. Hannah Mills, Clapboard, Sherman’s, and Oak Harbor creeks to name a few both north and south will begin to have big schools of reds roaming the oyster bars and flats for food. Float rigs, jig and shrimp combos or soft plastics can be deadly for catching a bunch of these fish. The offshore scene will taper off but good numbers of snapper, grouper, triggerfish, vermillions, and sea bass can be had for those whom want to fish the party grounds out to the 100 line. Make sure you check the regs for what you can keep. For more fishing tips listen to the Outdoorshow radio program on 1010am or 92.5fm every Saturday from 7am to 10am. Fishing Report & Forecast Nassau Sound By Capt. Tony Bozzella

ne of my favorite months for back country redfishing. Great time to catch a Mid Day low tide with the sun shining high, to sight fish, a backing red, or to get inside of a creek on the outgoing tide, catching reds in the rip (currents around the oyster) off the oysters. You have heard me say this many times, but where that current flows around oysters there’s often a little bit of a depression where Redfish can hold tight foraging on grass shrimp, crustaceans, etc. that get pushed to them. A great feeding spot to cast your jig and shrimp, combo or mudminnow up current and let it sit until you get the bite. After a 15/20 min wait, staying in tune with your jig, with no bite, move locations. I like using shrimp mostly because you can pick up a drum or sheep head. If I am at a location where I’m not expecting to catch any other fish than Redfish, mudminnows is often a good bait of choice because the minnow is active when you hook him through the lips, and he puts a commotion that will attract a bite. Dan Willenski, and Mark Laborte, each scored a

Gator trout (over 5lbs) doing this method. Be sure to use a 30 inch piece of Fluorocarbon in the 15 to 20 pound range tied with a Uni knot to your braid or mono filament and a loop knot to your 1/8 or 1/4oz TBS Jig. I use the Bowline knot. Fluorocarbon is difficult to see in the water, unlike braid, which is visible. I like to fish the last three hours of the outgoing in the first hour of the incoming. That’s usually when the best bite occurs as fish are being pulled from the grasses and areas that will lack water. For the Anglers that pole for their fish, a good mid day low tide & wind, sunny day can allow true sight fishing on backing fish. Often times, this time of year microorganisms die off with cooler water temperatures and with less rain and boat traffic and no bait on the flats the water gets very clear and you can often site fish. I try to pick flats that are holding fish and are in the Lee so the water is the calmest and you have a true chance of seeing the fish. If you have to fish high tide, a popping cork rig drifted by oyster bars can be a ticket. Grass lines & other structures can also be good. rout should also be schooled up. Often in holes in creeks, drop offs along the ICW. Traditional methods of throwing soft plastics or jig and shrimp. Combinations can be very effective. Often times this time of year Trout have a tendency to be smaller and below the 15 inch minimum length and many times you will also pick up other species while doing this. Don’t let winter fool you, it’s a great month to redfish!!!

Fishing Report & Forecast Fernandina / Amelia Island By Terry D. Lacoss

S

low trolling a ¼ ounce led head barbed with a Berkley Gulp shrimp is an excellent backwater fishing tactic during the month of December. Some of the best action comes while using your electric trolling motor at a super slow speed allowing your led head jig and shrimp combo to make contact with the bottom. Also look for some of the best action to come in narrow feeder creeks that empty into a main tidal river during the in coming tide. When the tide is falling, slow troll your shrimp combo close the inside of the St. Mary’s jetty rocks during all the falling tide. The best color patterns for shrimp imitations include white, white, and white! Also paired with a chartreuse colored led head jig. Expect to catch a lot of colorful spotted sea trout with the occasional hard fighting redfish. Tip of the month. When you hook a backwater specie slow trolling with your boat’s electric trolling motor, put your trolling motor into the “Anchor” mode and make repeated casts to where your fish was hooked slow trolling. Back country fishermen will also be targeting flounder, blues, black drum, and small sharks during the month of December as well. Fishing with ultra fresh shrimp, cut bait, or a piece of blue crab right on the bottom with a “Fish Finder” setup is key. Look for the best action while fishing the incoming tide close to deep-water oyster bars, under a boat dock, or close to a point of marsh grass that extends out over an oyster bar, or close to a creek mouth is key. Casting a minnow type, suspending plug like the chartreuse and white pattern Mir-O-Lure “27-MR” close to and over a rough oyster bottom that leads to a deep channel is a highly successful winter sea trout pattern. Look for some of the best sea trout action to come at the footsteps of historic town of Fernandina Beach where boat docks extend out into a deep nearby shipping channel. Black drum fishing action heats up during the month of December in the deep waters of Cumberland Sound, both the St. Mary’s and Nassau Inlets. Fishing on the bottom with fresh shrimp, or piece of blue crab is key. Look for the last few hours of the flooding tide to offer the best fishing action. Stella Moore still holds the “International Game & Fish” women’s black drum all tackle record weighing a whopping 93-pounds! Stella caught her big fish on March 28th, 1957, and still holds the record today. Stella caught her big drum with fifty-pound tackle while fishing with a ¼ blue crab. Stella also weighed a whopping 89 pounds! Excellent eating whiting will be running along the beaches of Amelia Island with the best surf fishing action coming at the southern portion of this beautiful island, beginning at “American Beach”. Once again fishing with fresh shrimp on a double hook leader and a four-ounce bank weight just behind the breaking surf will produce the best winter surf fishing action. Largemouth bass will be active during the month of December, particularly during stable weather conditions when the water temperatures are rising. Bass fishermen will need to be extra patient while slowing down their lure retrieve, and possibly fishing with smaller lures. Also, concentrating on areas of the bass waters where there is a shallow ambush point that leads to a deep-water escape. Without a doubt some of the best winter bass fishing in some of the small lakes and ponds located in and around Fernandina Beach/Amelia Island will come during the afternoon hours when the water temperature is the warmest. While the last few days of a warm front will frequently produce the best bass fishing action, avoid casting for bass during the last few days of a cold front. Best winter bass plugs include minnow type suspending plugs like the Rapala X-Rap in the black back and silver belly color pattern. The enticing suspending action imitates shad during the winter when cold 6 NORTHEAST FLORIDA

fronts knocks them “Silly” causing them to suspend in the mid depths of the water column. However, the very best big bass fishing technique during the month of December includes barbing a wild gold shiner through both lips with a 1/0 kahle hook and slow trolling live shiners along the deep edged of a shallow flat, or structure. There are numerous ponds a lakes located both on Amelia Island and surrounding Northeast Florida. Be sure and acquire permission first before making your first cast if the bass waters are located on private property. Practice “Catch & Release”! ecember should be an exciting month to surf fish Northeast Florida. That is if the Nor’easters will stop! Last month we had superb fishing between the cold fronts/Nor’easters. We had two weeks of wind/ waves, then two weeks of great fishing. As long as the water temperature does not go below 65 degrees, we should have a good Pompano bite well in to December. Along with the Pompano, there will be big Redfish in the surf. They have finished their breeding in the inlets and they are now cruising the beach in search of Mullet and Calico grabs. I have to thank my mentor, Jeff Rafter, for teaching me how to catch these big bruisers in cold weather. Here is the technique. First, near an inlet. Not in it, but within 300 yards of it. Secondly, if you want to tangle with an over slot monster, tackle up heavy. I use an

FSA Bigun 12 foot rod. Penn Spinfisher 7500LC loaded with 50 pound braid. Then a fish finder rig tied with 100 pound mono and a 7/0 Owner Mutu circle hook. Finally one half of a Blue Crab tipped with a piece of Fishbites crab flavor. Set your drag light! I have landed so many 40 inch plus Reds with this technique. My best day ever was December 15th. The air Temperature was 35 but the water temp was 65! We caught so many big Redfish! My fingers were numb from the cold while handling live Mullet but my angler’s smiles, see picture, were priceless. Alright, back to Pompano, Whiting, Black Drum and slot Redfish. Once again as long as the water temp is 64 or above you can catch all four. Let’s down size our baits to Blue Crab knuckles and live clams. If you have not fished with Blue Crab, see my short Youtube video entitled “How to Bait a Blue Crab”, During the colder months, the Sand Fleas go down deep. The Mullet are very scarce in the surf. So clams and Blue Crab are my baits of choice from December through March. I hope this helps. Go now and go often before the cold water drives the fish south or deep offshore. See you on the beach, in a jacket, very soon. Tight lines.

hen customers call me for a trip in December they have some difficult choices to make. I ask several questions. How long of a trip do you want? What is your target species? We are truly blessed to live in an area that allows me to ask those kinds of questions. December is a month that used to have everything to offer but not this year. Grouper is closed as well as Snapper. Open are Muttons and Mangrove snapper as well as Vermillion and red porgies and Triggerfish. So its still worth the trip to the ledge. Black fin tuna, Sailfish, Wahoo and the occasional Mahi can be found in decent numbers as well. So the question is what do you want to catch? On the bottom in the 100ft range anglers can expect Cobia, Vermillion snapper, Black Sea Bass, and Amberjack. There will be an abundance of live bait and nothing works better than a live sardine. I like to use an 8 ft. 80 pound monofilament leader and a #5 circle hook. In addition to Cobia and grouper the Vermillion and Sea Bass caught on this setup will run larger than those caught on the conventional double hook rig. Always have a jig rod rigged and ready for the Cobia that is sure to follow other fish to the surface. In the deeper water out near the shelf edge (23 to 28 fathoms) Triggerfish and Mutton snapper along with vermilion and red proxies will be on the prowl. I usually will make my leader longer when targeting Mutton snapper. It is not unusual for me to use a15 to 20 ft. leader especially if there is some tide. On the trolling scene the Wahoo showed up in good numbers in November and should be even better in December for the speed trollers. Starting in 135ft look for bait and temp changes around hard bottom for the speedy Wahoo. For conventional trollers Black fin Tuna will start moving out closer to the shelf edge as the inshore water cools. Medium ballyhoo rigged on monofilament, or the old reliable cedar plug will work for the Black fin. Don’t be afraid to adjust your distance and you may have to pull your shotguns back 100 yards in your spread. I like Red and black or blue and white for color on the cedar plugs.Wahoo will floss their teeth with

your monofilament rigs so I always pull some wire in my spread as well. Something down deep on a planner or downrigger and usually my flat line and at least one long rigger will be wire. So decide what you want to catch, sometimes that’s the hard decision. Everything is available and hungry. So “Let’s Go Fishing”

Surf Expo Kicks Off 2024 With a Wide Selection of Brands and Full Event Lineup

S

urf Expo, the premier watersports and coastal lifestyle tradeshow, returns to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando on Jan. 10-12, 2024, in the West Concourse with a broad selection of brands and a full event line up. Over 700 exhibiting companies are expected to participate in the January show, including over 60 new exhibiting brands. “Surf Expo continues to be the ‘go-to marketplace’ for buyers and brands to connect in person, discover new products and trends, and conduct business,” said Roy Turner, Emerald SVP and Surf Expo Show Director. “Our January show allows retailers to preview all the new styles and new introductions ranging from top surf brands, hardgoods, apparel, footwear, swimwear, boutique fashions and accessories, value-priced resort items, fishing and marine products, souvenirs, and coastal gifts.” The show has also expanded its footprint with watersports and coastal retailers with its new Shoreline offering. This new floor area compliments neighboring product categories on the show floor – Surf, Skate, Paddle and Bluewater — by targeting business associated with recreation found along rivers and lakes. Shoreline will feature products related to day camping, portable power, inflatables, overland, wakeboard, SUP, and performance related clothing and footwear. “From the trails to the lakes and beyond, Shoreline at Surf Expo supports the natural evolution of the waterman’s lifestyle with gear, apparel and accessories that will take them from coastal shoreline activities into camping, hiking, climbing and other recreational activities found along the rivers and lakes,” said Turner. A wide range of exhibitors have signed up for the January 2024 show that cater to the outdoor and fishing industries such as: Howler Bros., HUK, The Duck Co., Xtratuff, Keen, Guy Harvey, AFTCO, Fahalo, Columbia Sportswear, Teva, BAJIO Sunglasses, Chums, Dark Seas, Salty Crew, Fish Hippie, Mang and many more. Surf Expo is also the market to find the next new. More than 60 new exhibiting brands have signed on including Finaddicts, Handy Beach Goods, Neso, Paddlesmash, Sun Drunk, American Hatmakers, Fate, K’Lani, Livin Hooked Headwear, ORB, Our Own Candle Company, Tres Bien, ShuBug, Patsy Kane, Great Coast – Woodcraft, Jodi Melissa, Little Miss Zoe, Conscious Step, Jack & Sage Co, Hardcore Apparel, Dip LLC, and more. Surf Expo January will feature a full schedule of events including industry networking events, daily fashion shows, happy hours and learning labs. Special onsite events will include The East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame 2024 Induction Ceremony and the annual Florida Shape Off surfboard shaping competition.

ANGLERS GET TWO MONTHS FOR GULF AJ

I

t will be another short season for amberjack in the Gulf of Mexico next year. The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council decided in late October to modify both the recreational season and commercial trip limits for greater amberjack. The result for recreational anglers is a two-month fall season, which is expected to close a few days early based on projections. The council chose to modify the recreational season so it opens on Sept. 1 and remains open through Oct. 31, unless the annual catch target is projected to be met earlier. The projected date for reaching that annual catch target is Oct. 26. The council also chose to reduce the commercial trip limit to seven fish, which is equivalent to about 210 pounds gutted weight. This framework action will be transmitted to the Secretary of Commerce for approval and implementation as soon as practicable. In anticipation that this rule may not be implemented before the beginning of the 2024 commercial fishing season, the Council requested that NOAA Fisheries implement an emergency rule to reduce the commercial trip limit to seven fish at the start of the year. Since Amendment 54 reduced catch limits by about 83 percent, and the 2023 commercial annual catch limit was exceeded, a payback provision will reduce the 2024 commercial annual catch target to 56,661 pounds whole weight. Under the current 1,000-pound trip limit, the commercial fishing season is expected to be incredibly short. For more information, go to https://gulfcouncil.org/.

Sacred Stone of the Southwest is on the Brink of Extinction

C

enturies ago, Persians, Tibetans and Mayans considered turquoise a gemstone of the heavens, believing the striking blue stones were sacred pieces of sky. Today, the rarest and most valuable turquoise is found in the American Southwest–– but the future of the blue beauty is unclear.

26 carats of genuine Arizona turquoise B.

ONLY $99

On a recent trip to Tucson, we spoke with fourth generation turquoise traders who explained that less than five percent of turquoise mined worldwide can be set into jewelry and only about twenty mines in the Southwest supply gem-quality turquoise. Once a thriving industry, many Southwest mines have run dry and are now closed. We found a limited supply of turquoise from Arizona and purchased it for our Sedona Turquoise Collection. Inspired by the work of those ancient craftsmen and designed to showcase the exceptional blue stone, each stabilized vibrant cabochon features a unique, one-of-a-kind matrix surrounded in Bali metalwork. You could drop over $1,200 on a turquoise pendant, or you could secure 26 carats of genuine Arizona turquoise for just $99. C.

Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. If you aren’t completely happy with your purchase, send it back within 30 days for a complete refund of the item price.
