Bimini Bay Sets A New Standard With BloodGuard Apparel By CAM Staff

F

Bay an industry leader in today’s outdoor apparel industry. Always in the forefront of new fabric technology, Bimini Bay has also been a manufacturing leader in creating moisture management systems. Their shirts are engineered to keep the body comfortable and dry by drawing moisture to the fabric’s surface (wicking) where it can quickly evaporate. Now, with the introduction of their BloodGuard line, they have set a new standard in the industry. Try one of these new BloodGuard shirts for yourself. Blood washes right off with only water. No more bringing detergents or peroxide on the boat or dock to spare your favorite fishing shirt. Designed and tested in the field with real anglers, this new line of outdoor apparel is destined to set a new standard in the industry.

Living The T

he origins of Salt Life are pure. With two simple words in a scrawling font, the iconic brand began as a tattoo inked on the backs of a couple of surfing fishermen in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Four hard-core watermen began grassroots promotion of the design in 2003, selling bumper stickers and T-shirts. During the humble early years, no one foresaw the eventual scope of the worldwide phenomenon they had launched. Salt Life has come to represent everything everyone loves about the ocean. At a glance, the now-familiar logo proudly displays a love of the saltwater lifestyle. Fisherman and diver Jeff Stillwell, who just happens to be president of Salt Life, said he is blessed to be part of the phenomenon. “Whatever attracts you to the water, Salt Life represents that,” he said. “If you happen to love to fish, it means fishing to you. I happen to be an avid diver. It means diving to me. If you’re a surfer, it means surfing. If you just like hanging out on the beach and enjoying a cold beverage, it means that.” No longer just T-shirts and decals, Salt Life has grown to include a huge assortment of gear and apparel. Two concepts accompany all their offerings. The first holds true to the original message, a devotion to the coastal lifestyle and its fashions. The second builds on those roots by coupling fashion with performance in gear and apparel that helps customers better enjoy water-based activities. From high-performance sunglasses, featuring the best Zeiss polarized lenses, to technical clothing for fishing, surfing, diving, paddleboarding and beach-sitting, Salt Life has you covered. Stillwell mentioned Salt Life’s new Fusion Performance Pocket Fishing Shirts as an example of innovative design that will appeal to anglers. It’s got UV30 sun protection and ventilation, and it’s got something else you won’t find on other fishing shirts. “It really came upon me sitting on the back of a boat, fishing a tournament,” Stillwell said. “Every time that reel goes off, you start looking for things. I don’t know why no one has ever done this, but we took one of these high-performance shirts and put pockets on the back of it. When that reel goes off, I don’t have to look for gloves or a pair of pliers. Whatever I need, I’ve got it right there with me. ’Cause once I get in that chair, I’m going to be there for a while.” Only an angler would recognize the need for this kind of design, and it’s this kind of innovation that has made Salt Life a lot more than just a cool logo. Stillwell said they’ve got a line of waterproof gear on the horizon, and he’s excited about the territory expansion of Salt Life Lager. Yep… Salt Life launched an easy-drinking beer to celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2018. “It goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle,” Stillwell said. “We’re all out there on the water for a great fun-filled day in the sun, and at the end of the day our customer loves to kick back, as do I, with a nice cold beer.” But all the fun, and all the success, comes with responsibility. Without healthy oceans to play in, there would be no Salt Life. The company has joined with conservation organizations like Artificial Reefs International and Roatan Marine Park in protecting and enhancing the resources so that future generations can enjoy living the Salt Life.

Poncho: “The World’s Best Fishing Shirt.” Poncho is a new company that makes just one thing: a fishing shirt. We like that focus. Poncho calls their shirt “The World’s Best Fishing Shirt.” We’re impressed with the fast-drying fabric and innovative magnetic pocket flaps, which you can easily open with one hand. Smart details like a built-in eyeglass cleaner, slot to hang your sunglasses, roll-up sleeve tabs, and hidden zipper pocket will make anglers happy. They even go the extra mile by offering both relaxed and slim sizes. Poncho founder Clay Spencer grew up fishing the humid Texas coast. He’s also a former Alaskan fly fishing guide, so he knows a thing or two about extreme conditions. Clay said, “I made the Poncho shirt for guys who are serious about being comfortable on the water and don’t want a bunch of gimmicks. I cut the velcro, loops and baggy pockets. This shirt is made to have everything you need—and nothing you don’t.” Get a free hat with purchase of a shirt with code COASTALMAG. Gillz Apparel –

By Anglers For Anglers

G

illz was started by a passionate angler, an angler driven by the need for one thing—performance. It’s evident in the style and quality of the Gillz brand. Started back in 2009, the idea was to design the perfect fishing shirt that would be lightweight, soft, comfortable and protective. This led to the first innovation – Cross Breeze Ventilation, which consisted of mesh panels under the arms and down the sides of the body. This allowed airflow through and under the shirt, making it even cooler and more comfortable. Other innovations followed, like a vented mask with “gills” for ventilation. This radical mask design offered unparalleled cooling and comfort. The technological innovations kept coming, and Gillz introduced CoolCore technology. CoolCore is a redesign of the actual structure of the fabric to make it cooler. Unlike most companies that simply apply a chemical to their fabric, which can wear off after repeated use and washings, CoolCore is a natural, chemical-free way to cool—up to 30 percent cooler than competitors. In addition, Gillz shirts are non-clinging and non-saturating. They wick sweat away from the body and offer UPF+50 sun protection. Gillz is designed for the passionate angler, the recreational fisherman, or anyone who lives an active outdoor lifestyle. The brand has grown from one innovative fishing shirt to a full apparel line. From tees, to high-performance shirts, to hats, to masks, sunglasses and hoodies, Gillz makes gear for every condition. Designs and patterns are constantly being updated, but the focus on performance is always a constant. Gillz considers making the most comfortable fishing shirt in the world an ongoing process, so innovation will always be of paramount importance. Gillz has come a long way from just making a simple fishing shirt. For more information, visit gillz-gear.com.

Center sp A Badge of Honor

O

ld Guys Rule was created to embrace a new breed of guys who have incredible energy, passion for life, wisdom gained from years of experience and the time to spend doing the activities they enjoy. Old Guys Rule gear should be worn as a badge of honor for a life well-spent, but not nearly over. Let’s face it, in today’s society if you’re over 40, you’re considered old. Old Guys Rule makes the statement: “So what?” We’re still having fun, still doing what we enjoy and, oh by the way, we’re in control. Don’t let the rest of the world try to tell you anything different. Old guys rule! Founder Don Craig brought the Old Guys Rule concept to the California surfing community in 2003. Its popularity quickly spread to include numerous genres and recreational pursuits. Now anglers can make their statement as well through a series of nine angler-themed shirts including bass, mahi, tuna and marlin. No matter where or how you fish, let the world know “You Rule.” For more information on Old Guys Rule offerings, visit http://oldguysrule.fishing or call 866-465-9640.

MARCH 2019

rom my perch atop a pile of boulders, I faced directly into a stiff northeast wind and its attendant waves. I stood with dubious footing as the swirling elements riled the air and water around me. There was seemingly no reason for me or anyone else to fish this particular spot at this particular time, but I had a hunch. Several yards seaward from where I balanced among the loose stones, the shallow bottom sloped to a depth of about 8 feet. The submerged valley was fed by a newly dropping tide. The wind and waves, working to oppose the falling water, stirred the seas over the basin into a strip of foaming turbulence. With tide pushing baitfish into the depression—and the churning water pinning them there—an ideal ambush situation was created for any nearby snook craving an easy meal. For weeks, the wind had blown steadily from the east and southeast. When a forceful northeast blow ensued, I anticipated predatory activity. Consecutive days featuring gusts of up to 25 mph compelled me to abandon my usual bridge fishing to capitalize on the shifting atmospheric conditions. Mindful of the wind’s ability to influence the location of baitfish schools, my instincts drew me to this boulder-capped point of land protruding from the river’s western bank. Few creatures in the diet of gamefish wear chartreuse or anything remotely similar to the flamboyant shade of green. Any critter dressed in such gaudy fashion would be doomed immediately to the stomach of a predator. So, when my chartreuse jig entered the tempestuous waters of the drop-off, it was snapped up instantly by a 26-inch snook. Not long after releasing the fish, underwater visibility proved to be of no significance on this occasion. When I switched to a less noticeable variety of lure, the snook continued their assault and hit almost everything I threw at them for the next four nights. Throughout the feed, I had the setting entirely to myself; the fish were in an aggressive mood all the while—a product of the same natural forces that guided me to their location with such timeliness. The most interesting part of the affair was that the feeding, in spite of its furor, existed for only a short period of the outgoing tide each night. The snook, most of which were in the high 20-inch range, abandoned their tactics when the wind shifted back to its more regular southeastern origin. As the tide progressed in its unremitting cycle, the frenzy of action concluded—to resume in another place on a different breath of wind and a different stage of the tide. alt air and saltwater can restore the body and the soul, sometimes literally. This is a story about a unique ocean voyage that has a berth waiting for you. Travis Suit’s inspiration for standup paddling from the Bahamas to Florida is his daughter Piper, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was four. “CF” is a progressive genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time (www.pipersangels.org). When Travis learned that saltwater could be very beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of CF, he immersed Piper in saltwater activities and became inspired to create an oceanbased event that could raise awareness and funds to help CF patients everywhere. Thus was born the Crossing For A Cure. Travis made his first crossing from the Bahamas to Florida in 2013 with three stalwart friends who traversed 90 miles after paddling continuously for 15 hours. They came to be known as “Piper’s Angels.” Since then, their ranks have grown to include hundreds of inspired paddlers, dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors who work together to support and improve the lives of families in the cystic fibrosis community by raising awareness, offering life-expanding activities and providing urgent financial support through the Piper’s Angels Foundation. This year’s journey from Bimini to Florida is scheduled for June 15, and opportunities for you to become part of the Crossing abound. The event is open to standup or prone boards, surf skis, outrigger canoes and dories, with a potential of $88,000 in cash purses for the competitive categories. You can paddle as a competitor or a recreational relay member, or sponsor a paddler, a team or the Foundation in any amount. The Crossing crew is actively seeking support vessels and captains (offering lodging and fuel stipends), and looking for volunteers to assist at the Lake Worth Beach landing. Join or follow the adventure, and learn how the foundation’s “Salt Supply” program is connecting saltwater-based vendors and guides with CF patients. For more information, see www.crossingforacure.com/ and www.facebook.com/CrossingForACure/.

f all the animals a diver might encounter, the octopus most easily qualifies as a creature from outer space. But, despite their eight arms, three hearts, nine brains and blue blood, octopuses really do have an earthly lineage. They are a mollusk (think oysters and conchs), but gave up their shells around 400 million years ago. In that time, nature has figured out some strange but effective ways for this animal to eat without being eaten. Dispensing with its shell gave the octopus flexibility and mobility. To take advantage of their mobility, the octopus features eight flexible, sucker-equipped arms. With these arms octopuses can pull themselves in any direction over the ocean bottom or swim through open water. For real emergencies, they can squirt a blast of water from their siphon for a jet-propelled take-off. Just about every part of an octopus except its beak and eyes can flow like Silly Putty. Consequently, an octopus can work its way through just about any opening it can get its beak through. That means an octopus has lots of places to hide.

12

FLORIDA

CANGL_FL1-FL24.indd 12

MARCH 2019

Octopuses have turned hiding into an art form. Their skin contains millions of chromatophores—cells that contain red, orange, yellow, brown or black pigment. Each cell can be individually expanded or contracted to show or hide color and change the texture of their skin. This allows the octopus to match its surroundings in a fraction of a second as it moves. The most alien characteristic of octopuses is probably their eight arms. Each arm has double rows of suckers that not only grasp, but also taste. As an octopus hunts the ocean bottom, the arms independently probe cracks and crevices in search of prey. If it appears those arms have minds of their own, they do. While an octopus has about 500 million neurons, only about a third of them form the central brain. The remaining two-thirds are equally divided among the eight arms, putting them where they can most efficiently interact with those myriad muscles, sensors and chromatophores. So where does a diver go to encounter these amazing animals? My favorite local spot is the Blue Heron Bridge. Octopus studies at the site, led by local researcher Chelsea Bennett, have found common octopus, the Atlantic longarm octopus, Caribbean two-spot, Caribbean reef, pygmy and brownstriped octopuses there. Since octopuses are so good at hiding, Chelsea offered advice from her many hours of octopus observation. “The common and the longarm octopuses are generally found in high densities at the east and west end of BHB (typically just south of the bridges). I call these species underwater neighbors because they are both found in same areas but can coexist because they are associated with different substrates. The common octopus lives in hard-bottom areas (rock, rubble, shell) and the Atlantic longarm in sandy plains.” Pura Vida Divers is featuring Blue Heron Bridge Diver specialty courses throughout the month of March. You’ll learn to navigate the site, identify wildlife and recognize indicators of dens for animals like octopuses. Sign up for an upcoming class by calling 561-8408750.

e’ve all seen the red tide events that hammer fish on Florida’s Gulf Coast. In February, stockings of redfish began to ease the pain of fish kills on resident populations. Duke Energy, FWC and CCA Florida began the release of more than 16,000 juvenile and adult redfish in southwest Florida counties. The program was announced in fall of 2018, and includes donation of the hatchery-reared redfish from the Duke Energy Mariculture Center in Crystal River, Fla. Each of five releases include about 2,000 juvenile fish and 25 to 30 adult redfish. Stockings were scheduled for Pasco County, Hillsborough County, Sarasota and Charlotte counties, Lee and Collier counties and Manatee County. “We’re extremely excited to begin releasing these fish now that the waters are determined to be safe,” said Brian Gorski, CCA Florida Executive Director. “Between these releases, encouraging anglers to catch-and-release and promoting conservation, we’re going to see this fishery improve, and we’re honored to be a part of it.” Anglers can become engaged by joining CCA Florida at JoinCCA. org.

John Benvenuto of Key West, Fla., he earned the title of divisional grand champion for the second consecutive year. Christian’s catches included the fly division’s largest individual barracuda, measuring 47.75 inches. Andrew Hunt of Marathon, Fla., won the Cuda Bowl’s spin division championship, releasing barracuda totaling 278.5 inches. He was guided by Capt. Chad Huff of Fort Myers, Fla. The tournament’s female grand champion was Julie Leeman of Tucson, Ariz., who released barracuda totaling 240.5 inches on spin tackle. She fished with Capt. Chris Leeman. Kai Decker of St. Augustine, Fla., earned the title of top junior angler. Guided by Capt. Mike O’Brien of Summerland Key, Fla., the 13-yearold released 124.5 inches of barracuda. The tournament’s Ben Gravett Memorial Team Trophy went to Florida anglers Bob Sellers of Sanford and Eddie Hunt of Deltona, fishing with Capt. Bo Sellers of Ramrod Key, Fla. The anglers released 12 fish measuring a total of 524.75 inches. Trent Miller of Hamilton, Illinois, caught the largest individual barracuda in the spin division. He released the 51.75-inch fish while guided by Capt. Scott Irvine of Key West. Marathon angler Wade Mayberry scored the most releases in the spin division with 32. He fished with Capt. Albert Ponzoa, also of Marathon. In the fly division, Jim Knowles of Round Hill, Va., released 22 barracuda to take the “most releases” title. His captain was Peter Heydon of Key West. The flats challenge drew 50 boats and 70 registered anglers who released a total of 9,765.1 inches of barracuda over two fishing days. For information on the Cuda Bowl, see www.cudabowl.com.

elcome to the challenge of spring fishing. I know a lot of people struggle to consistently pattern fish in the month of March, so I have put together a few key points that should help out. Although the days may warm up considerably, the

CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 2

water can still stay chilly. The continuation of passing fronts can drop the water temperature quite quickly as it struggles to climb up the thermometer, keeping fish less aggressive. In March, I still hold onto some of the same structure I key on in the coldest months. Although I may start to mix in more shell and grass into my target areas, one thing that needs to remain from the cold weather handbook is quick and easy access to deeper water. With frequent cold fronts, although they may not have the same punch, the fish will still look to retreat to more stable water temps in the depths of a general area. The warmer and sunnier the day, the farther the fish will stray from that deep-water access, but they will not completely abandon its safety. I like to focus on the outer edge of the guts that lead from deeper water to the flats early, and I’ll follow them up on the flat as the day warms. With the fronts comes dreaded high pressure! Here are a couple tactics I rely on in this situation. First, and typically the most productive, is to downsize your lure. This is especially true in the spring when forage is young. I also like to go with a natural or translucent color patterns for a more natural approach. I tend to slow down and work lures closer to the bottom, as well, when the barometer is on the rise. My next approach, when nothing is working in a high barometer setting, is to do something completely opposite of what I just recommended. When all else fails, I tie on a very noisy lure that creates a lot of water displacement. This could be a noisy topwater, a noisy rattling lure or a lipped crankbait-style plug. At this stage, I am just looking for a reaction bite. If I can aggravate them enough, they just might take the bait. Although these techniques are polar opposites, I find the fish to be on one end of the spectrum or the other when dealing with high pressure. You just need to experiment and figure them out. Get out and enjoy the weather, and remember to take a kid fishing! Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Controlled Descent Lures and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

Fishing Report & Forecast Mayport By Capt. Kirk Waltz

T

he weather continues to be a major factor in the fishing this month. Sharp temperature fluctuations to the cold side have proven to slow things down a bit inshore. The most effective days to fish with the optimum results are the warm weather window days. Try to fish late morning into early afternoon when the sun is at its warmest. Reds, trout, black drum, and sheepshead will be the predominate species. The high outgoing to dead low tides seem to be the best. The jetties will hold trout on the high outgoing and the reds will stage on the dead low. Fish slowly and methodically using live shrimp, fiddlers, cut blue crab, and mud minnows for best results. A typical 1/4oz jig on a light spin rod is effective, the old standard float rig works, and one of my favorite old reliable rigs, the egg sinker/leader combo. Try to remember the water is cold and so are the fish. The bite will be subtle and light. This doesn’t mean it’s a small fish so be mindful when you go to set the hook. Be methodical and work both the inside and outside of the jetties. The ringtail porgies and sheepshead should really fire off this month. Both species will eagerly eat a shrimp or fiddler and are dynamite 4 NE FLORIDA

fighters on light tackle. The tips of the rocks usually are my favorite areas to search first. The Mayport Basin area from White Shell rocks to the Navy base is a great area to catch good sized trout this time of the year. High clean water is best right as the river begins to flow out. Live shrimp on a float rig or a 1/4oz jig with a white or new penny 3in swimming Gulp bait seem to be my go to bait. Also, look for the big black drum to push into the rocks in large numbers. A quarter piece of blue crab soaked at the ends of the jetties in 38-42ft of water to be most effective. Remember these are the breeding stock so let the big ones go. The local party grounds right off the beach will hold good numbers of sea bass, ringtails, some triggers, and lots of red snapper. Cut squid, cigars, live shrimp, and even mud minnows are great baits to use. I fished offshore a few times last month and had a blast catching what I could eat and keep releasing the rest back. Please be sure to check the regs for what you can and cannot keep. Remember you can’t catch them from the couch.. To book a charter for 3 or 50ppl Capt. his is probably the best time of the year for serious North Florida offshore fisherman, when migrating fish of many kinds make their annual tour across our Northeast Florida waters in search of mild water temperatures and plentiful baitfish. It’s also the best time of year for tournament anglers and competitive fisherman of all kinds. Wahoo continue to be the tournament favorites in Northeast Florida, but we’ll begin to see more Blackfin Tuna and Dolphin into March, April and May and those fish will be followed by the Sailfish and Marlin. The Wahoo tournaments come to an end in March but several Billfish tournaments in March and April allow the competition to continue well into the spring. At the Northeast Florida Marlin Association, we’ll be hosting the Bucky Odom Memorial Corporate Challenge March 29th and 30th and then our Bluewater

Tournament on April 26th – 28th . This is the 47th year for the Bluewater Tournament and we’re expecting to register up to fifty boats for this Offshore World Championship Qualifying event. The Bluewater will have both Billfish and Gamefish divisions and several opportunities to win cash and prizes. Anglers and Sponsors can find information at www.nefma.com and entry forms are available at the Strike zone and other regional tackle shops. Palms Fish Camp Restaurant By CAM Staff

F

inally, Jacksonville has a waterfront restaurant to be proud of not only because of its accessibility by Boat, Kayak, Jet Ski or SUP but they serve delicious fresh local caught, straight off the boat, fish and shrimp. No wonder their waterfront deck and patio pack out on sunny weekends while listening to live local music on the deck all day Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, The Palms has live music Wednesday through Friday evenings. Located at 6359 Heckscher Drive the Palms abuts the Timucuan Preserve, part of the National Park system. Access by water is easy with plenty of deep water and a 13-foot clearance under the bridge at low tide. The Palms Restaurant is located next to the Palms Fish Camp Boat Ramp. The location, atmosphere and layout of the Palms makes it an ideal location to host fishing tournaments and captains’ meetings. In just a year and a half the Palms has hosted 7 tournaments ranging from offshore Wahoo and Snapper tournaments to inshore tournaments. The Palms is also proud to serve as the home of the Jacksonville Bluewater Fishing Club and hosts many of their events throughout the year. Owners Marshall Adkison and Marc Hardesty met over 20 years ago while both were commanding Army units. Both had commanded various Army units, been deployed and retired after 20 plus years of service. Both run other successful businesses, Adkison built from the ground up Adkison Towing that services the entire region with towing and salvage services. Hardesty, a trial attorney started the local law firm Hardesty, Tyde, Green & Ashton 25 years ago with offices in Jacksonville and Jacksonville Beach. They also

had something else in common. They both are avid fishermen who know fresh seafood, they live close to the Palms Fish Camp Restaurant that it is part of their neighborhood. Both had known the Palms Fish Camp for years when it was open and then watched the location close and sit vacant for years. They appreciated the potential and location

of the Palms and secured a long-term lease while beginning extensive renovations to create a destination restaurant dedicated to Fresh Local Seafood. Both have an uncompromising commitment to the fishing community. As Hardesty said “why in the world would you want to serve foreign frozen processed seafood when the best and freshest fish is right here?” Adkison is quick to point out “the reason the other places serve Tilapia and pond raised shrimp in a plastic bag is because it’s easy, quick and cheaper not to mention the inferior quality.” “We simply won’t do it that way. We buy all our shrimp directly from our neighbor’s boats 4 miles down the road and our fish straight off the local hook and line boats” Hardesty said. The Palms also catches its own fish periodically which sets itself apart from most everyone in the seafood restaurant business. Daily specials are the norm with the fresh catch selections dominating the menu. How about a whole fried Flounder or Beeliner, Wahoo Medallions, Sheepshead or Cobia filets, a basket of fish throats, House made Smoked Mullet, House made Smoked Fish Dip, Mayport Shrimp or a low country boil with Nassau Sound Blue Crabs, Oysters Fried Steamed or Raw, Grand Banks Dry Packed Scallops and the list goes on and on. If, by chance, fresh seafood isn’t your thing then how about a hand-crafted pizza or flatbread creation from our Woodstone oven. If that doesn’t do it then how about our house smoked pulled pork, short rib burger, steak or chicken. I could go on and on about the food but there’s so much more like the Live Music on the Deck overlooking Clapboard Creek and the Timucuan Preserve. The North Florida Tiki Bar even has hand carved Palm Tikis carved by Cress Baker one of the locals. They have a full bar with specialty drinks, wine and many local craft beers on tap and in the bottle. As they say at the Palms: “Come on Up the Creek and Taste the difference Fresh Local Caught Seafood makes!!”

arch is a transitional month where the water starts to heat up and many of the pelagic (Fish that live off the ocean floor) fish will be making their way back to the north Florida area. The trout bite should start to pick up as the water warms and the bait returns. This is a good time to throw mullet imitating hard baits. Fishing over structure with moving water and bait can be the ticket. Bluefish can be in the mix also. If you are catching them, trout will be close. I have also seen Jack Crevalle show up as early as the end of March. Both Blues & jacks can be fun on light tackle & fly. Of course all fish benefit & will be looking for bait to eat, redfish will get their fair share also. The backcountry shallows & mud flats will still hold a good number of smaller to slot sized redfish. A TBS jig paired with shrimp crab or mud minnows will be a great choice. The shrimp will be best if you would like to have a chance at a black drum or Sheephead, which will be in the same areas. The water should stay clear coming off winter, so sight fishing reds on the mud flats should still be in full swing. This is usually the last of the clear water & chance to truly sight fish. Until next month, get out & fish

Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Inshore By Capt. Tommy Derringer

T

his has been a wild winter as far as the weather is concerned. It seems like every few days we’ve had a front coming through bringing high winds and and rain. It’s been making it tough to get out on the water on a regular basis. When the weather has been nice the fishing has been great. We’ve had peroids when the water has been super clear allowing for some great sight-fishing opportunities. But even when the weather has been tough and the fish haven’t been so easy to pattern, don’t give up, they are still chewin! March is typically an awesome month to get on the water in Northeast Florida. Redfish, trout, and black drum will be the main focus inshore this month. Look for redfish in shallow flats and creeks that have a darker mud or oyster-laden bottom. On clear days the sun will warm the water a few degrees in those areas making a great spot for the reds to hang out and warm up a bit. Bait (mullet, minnows, shrimp) will also hold in these “hot” spots and it’s common knowledge that the reds will be in the same areas the bait is. There isn’t a ton of bait out there but if you do find some finger mullet take a close look because there’s more than likely some redfish lurking around. Sight-fishing for reds has been a little hit or miss this year, again due to the weather. If it warms up quickly this month the water will start to get murky as the algae starts to bloom.

Not to worry you can still “sight” fish. One way to spot schooled up reds is to look for wakes or “muds” caused by the fish moving. I’ve been locating some big schools this way just about all winter. The latter half of this month marks the start to my favorite time of year to fish for trout. Once the water starts to warm up a bit the trout will be going crazy. There’s nothing like watching that big momma trout come soaring out of the water after your top-water plug. Creek mouths, rip rap, and just about anywhere you have some moving water are going to be great places to target the specs. Remember to loosen the drag just a little when throwing top-water plugs for trout. They have somewhat delicate mouths and you don’t want to rip the plug away from the fish before they actually get it. Of course if top-water isn’t your thing a jig and soft plastic will do the trick for the specs as well. My go-to rig of choice for trout (and reds too!) is a Saltwater Assassin Lil Boss paddle tail rigged on a 1/8-1/4oz jighead or weedless hook. Jig, jig, then pause... then repeat. The sheepshead bite has been pretty steady this winter and should continue into early spring. Fiddlers and oyster crabs have been the best baits. Just about any structure with barnacles on it has been holding some “heads”. The black drum bite has been pretty good over the last couple of months and should continue this month. Most of my fish have been in the 3-8lb range and were caught in the deeper parts of the creeks off the ICW. The best baits have been live/fresh dead shrimp, or a fiddler crab. An hour on either side of low tide has been producing the best bite, especially around the new and full moons. Capt. Tommy Derringer 904-377-3734 • www.InshoreAdventures.net

he February 7th meeting was packed with activity. Outside of the clubhouse the Big Red Bus was collecting blood from club donors. Inside club chefs were presenting their best efforts at the annual chili cook-off. Hal Hannah has done it again. While piloting the Cloud Nine back into port they ran across some likely looking bottom. Dropping and locking the trolling motor the crew began jigging. Fish were marking but no takers for the long curly tailed jigs. As a good captain will do, Hal changed tactics. Drifting across the spot with yellow and black jigs was the ticket. On the third drift all anglers were hooked up with an additional five cobia following. At the end of the fourth drift the Cloud Nine was limited out, the largest being 48 pounds. Upcoming: Our next regularly scheduled meeting is Thursday February 21.

The next club tournament is the Sheepshead Tune-up on Saturday February 16. El Cheapo March 9th, Sheepshead Tournament (https:// www.elcheapojax.com/). Come join us for the largest Sheepshead tournament in the world, and one of the largest fishing tournaments in the USA. We open the doors around 6:00 if you want to come early to visit, dinner is at 7:00, and we generally try to get started with the meeting about 7:30, and we will have a great raffle. All of our meetings are open to the public, you do not have to be a member to attend. We are family friendly so feel free to bring the kiddos! If they are a little too young to appreciate the guest speaker, please bring them a quiet activity to do at the table with you. We hope to see you there!

THE VALUE OF USING A BROKER

W

hen I started in the boat business in 1968, I never thought that I would still be here 51 years later. In that period of time, having sold almost 2000 boats, I learned a lot. The valuable lesson that I learned was to hire a licensed yacht broker in both the purchase and sale of your vessel. Historically, a boat purchased from a private seller will cost from 15 to 20 percent more than if purchased through a broker. The seller convinces the buyer that they are saving a ton of money because there is no sales commission being charged. That is a totally false statement. A broker actually researches the realistic value of the vessel prior to the sale. The boat gets sold somewhere in between, and everyone is happy. Another reason to hire a broker is based upon disclosure. A private seller has absolutely no obligation to disclose any serious issues that plague his vessel. After every hurricane, the used boat market spawns

a high volume of boats for sale. A private seller has no obligation to disclose whether or not his vessel was hurricane salvage. A licensed yacht broker can jeopardize his license and integrity by keeping a damaged vessel a secret. Hurricane damage is a serious issue in used boats. A salvaged boat can be cleaned up to appear new. With every purchase there is generally a survey and possibly financing. Yacht brokers deal with these groups everyday. Going to your computer to locate a qualified lender, marine insurance carrier or simply to find a surveyor is often time based upon who has the brightest and most informative website. If you make the wrong choice it can end up costing you a lot of money. Last June a client of mine purchased an older classic vessel from me and hired a surveyor whose website looked the best. When the surveyor arrived I cringed in disbelief. The surveyor was feeble and had outdated equipment. Needless to say, he gave the vessel poor marks and the concerned buyer walked away. I sold the vessel two months later and the vessel passed with flying colors. The original surveyor had a nicer website. The buyer lost out, the seller lost money and the broker lost commission. HIRE A BROKER !!!!

ince we had a mild winter, March may be the month of the Pompano. The picture of Pompzilla is from mid February 2019. I caught it in Melbourne with a piece of fresh clam. The water was 65 degrees. That is chilly but it is also the temp that Pompano feel comfortable migrating into. They will show up first in our southern zones of Ormond, Flagler, and Crescent Beach. A great tool to find the best water temperature is marine.rutgers.edu/cool/sat_data . When the temp gets right, 65-70, the Pompano will be there. What kind of bait should you use? There is a small clam that lives year round on our beaches. The correct name is Donax. They are also called Periwinkles or Coquina. There are fish that are specialized in eating clams and crabs whole. These are Whiting, Redfish, Black Drum, and Pompano. They all have crushers at the back of their throats. In the spring when the water is chilly and sand fleas are hard to come by, use clams. Either fresh from the seafood market, frozen, or salted they all work. The big Pomps migrate first. This is because they can stand the colder water better. All of the six pound plus fish I have caught have either been real

early in the spring or late in the fall. So when you set up be sure to set your drags light. You may just hook into the new nine pound world record. The standard two hook double dropper rig is the standard in surf fishing. I prefer 2/0 circle hooks with a white float on top and a tangerine color bead on the bottom. The fish finder or sinker slider rig works well also with the same size hook. Whichever rig you use be sure to use as much weight as necessary to hold bottom where you cast to. DO NOT FISH IN DIRTY WATER! Do not waste your time. Sandy green is ok but not brown surf water. Keep driving while checking spots along the way until you find good water. Remember almost always the water is cleaner on one side of an inlet than the other. January and February where so slow here in northeast Florida because of the chilly water. I am so looking forward to seeing those rods doubled over with my toes in the sand! See you on the beach! Fishing Report & Forecast St. Augustine Offshore By Capt. Robert Johnson

Early Spring Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring. I am the eternal optimist so let’s go with that. March means Wahoo and Blackfin Tuna to the offshore fisherman. This fishery is divided into two groups, fast and slow. Fast referring to the high-speed lure fisherman and slow referring to the group that prefers to pull rigged baits. I have done both but prefer the latter. High speed lure fishing does have its benefits. You can cover more territory and you pretty much eliminate all species other than Wahoo. It also supports the local tackle and fuel vendors. Let’s talk about the benefit of natural bait. Most importantly it allows you to fish for multiple species at the same time. I love Wahoo but do not mind adding a fat Tuna fish or early season Mahi to the fish box. My typical spread will be a mixture of wire and monofilament rigs. I pull two shotguns from the bridge. One will have a cedar plug rigged on mono the other will be a Islander lure Sea Star with a medium 16 NE FLORIDA

CAM_JAX_MAR2019.indd 16

MARCH 2019

ballyhoo rigged on wire. The long riggers will be wire and ballyhoo rigs as well. The two short riggers will be naked mono ballyhoo rigs Off the transom we pull a deep line with an Islander Hawaiian eye usually blue and white rigged on wire. The other transom line is usually a mono bait. Depending on what we are seeing and how many bite offs we have this spread will be adjusted accordingly. It’s not unusual for us to have Wahoo, Tuna, Mahi and Sailfish all on the same day. We normally fish structure just inshore of the shelf or the shelf itself. 7 knots is the normal trolling speed and the old saying don’t leave fish to find fish always is good advice. On the bottom there will be plenty of jumbo bee liners, triggerfish and porgies available for those days when the trolling fish don’t cooperate. Any structure from 140 ft and deeper should hold plenty of fish dinners. A double hook Rigg baited with cut squid and you are in business. If you want something larger Amberjack will be schooled up along the ledge in preparation for spawning. A 6 to 8-ounce jig worked vertically through the water column should produce plenty of reef donkeys. Remember all grouper species are closed until May 1st “Let’s Go Fishing” Captain Robert Johnson Jodie Lynn Charters wwwJodieLynnCharters.com (904)540-2628 jlfishing@bellsouth.net

e'll start with the specks. They're going, and probably gone by the end of the month. They'll hit the right temp to drop those eggs and move on so if you are so inclined, you'll want to hit the creeks about middepth, say six to eight feet, and around shallow 'til you locate them. Then just hooking. Next will be the bass. They'll be looking for the nice firm bottoms of canals, bars, flats et al; and the buck will start making a home for the female that they have to convince to be in it. So they, with will power and persuasion, will finally get that heavy weight to lay those eggs and then the male duties come into play. While all of the above is going on, you'll catch them on shiners, crabs, lizards, worms and tubes. Lest we forget, spinner bait ran across the top of bed eventually get them piled up for a great reaction bite. So 18 NE FLORIDA

grab a bucket full of shiners or other bait and go for it. Bream will be starting and going strong. Bedding activity will be in the same areas as the large mouth, with the exception of shell crackers who'll be hittin' it heavy on the shell bars. Baits of choice will be grunt worms, wigglers and crickets. So if at all possible, give them a try. You'll be happy you did. Oh! I almost forgot the overlooked but as tasty as anything, the war mouth. They'll be in the pads and more than willing to nibble on a minnow or on a nice worm. These tasty little beauties are about as much fun as there is. They fight like a fish twice their size and will let you have all you want on a bream buster. Now onto the salty side of life. Reds, smallish, but out there, will eat plastic swim baits, shiners, bait shrimp, crabs and spinner baits. Fish near and parallel to the grass line and work it. Don't give up--they may be deeper, but will show up to eat. So go already. Stripers and hybrids will be around the end piers and then bridge pilings. They'll hit lipless crank baits as well as shiners, top water or plastic swim baits., Keep your line wet and your lure movin'.--Richard.

Fishing Report & Forecast Flagler Inshore By Captain Chris Herrera

pring is around the corner and should bring the mullet out of their winter hiding holes. Redfish will start to scatter on the flats and will be hanging around the pods of mullet eating whatever gets kicked up. Look along Spartina grass edges, oyster patches during high tides and ICW and creeks for low tides. Slayer Penetrator 1/8 oz Predator jigs with a Slayer inc. sst paddle tail, Rapala skitter walk topwater plugs and hard plastic mullet imitators are proven lures that work for reds in March. Live mullet, cut mullet, shrimp and popping cork combo or a mud minnow on a jig head will produce Redfish for the live bait fisherman especially during low tides in deeper creeks around oyster bars.

Trout will be devouring top water plugs with the fish attracting sound of “Click Clack” at first light along ICW, creek mouths and docks on outgoing tides. Throw that plug far up creek in shallow water and “walk the dog” into nearby drop-offs where trout tend to hang out. When the sun gets high over head whip out that jig and soft plastic combo or diving plugs for subsurface trout. Bluefish will be around Matanzas Inlet mixed in with the trout at first light filling their bellies with soft plastic jerkbaits on ¼ oz jig heads. Later in the day Bluefish will feast on a live mullet on the bottom using a fish finder rig. Look for Flounder at the inlets during change of tides using a fish finder rig and live mullet. Creek holes during low tides will hold Flounder as well and my favorite rig is a live mud minnow and Slayer 1/4oz Destroyer jig head. Keep your bait pegged to the bottom and retrieve it as slow as possible. If you think you’re going slow enough, stop and retrieve even slower till you feel that thump. In out southern region the snook will be patrolling the grass banks feeding on small fry. Look for “knock downs” or points that break up the current where snook will be hiding and ready to ambush

Fishing Report & Forecast Fernandina / Amelia Island By Terry D. Lacoss

A

major black drum spawn will take place along the beaches and inlets of Amelia Island during the month of March during the full or new moon phase. Look for black drum weighing from 20-80 pounds to be caught just few hundred yards off from the eastern end of Atlantic Avenue on Main Beach. Here a deep slough that has a hard bottom is the big attraction for spawning drum. Several black drums are also caught while fishing at the tip of the St. Mary’s jetty rocks and in the deep, fishy waters of Cumberland Sound. Black drum typically spawns at sunset and during a new or full moon. Black drum spawn multiple times while they are in bays, jetties and along the beaches. The spawning process lasts just over an hour and when there is good current, preferably a hard in-coming tide. Pair an in-coming tide with a new or full moon and black drum will have maximum current conditions for spawning. The hard-running tides produced by the new, or full moon disperses the fertilized eggs much more efficiently than a slow moving current. Black drum also school during their spawning season where they can be caught with excellent results. Best bait for black drum continues to be half a blue crab fished dead on the bottom. First the hard shell is removed, and the crab is split into two halves. A 7/0 kahle hook is then barbed through the body of the crab and out through a leg.

terminal fishing line to a 3-foot section of 100-lb. fluorocarbon shock leader. Finally, a 7/0 kahle hook completes your drum fishing tackle. David Cartwright holds the Florida all tackle black drum record with his 96-pound black drum that he landed on April12, 2001. Cartwright was night fishing just off from “Main Beach” with blue crab on the bottom when his big drum was caught. However, Stella Moore is best known for her record breaking 93-pound black drum that she landed on March 28, 1957. Mrs. Moore still holds Florida’s 50-pound all tackle black drum record. It was one of the more notable saltwater records, as Stella Moore weighed 89-pound, while the drum weighed 96-pounds! Current black drum regulations allow fishermen to keep five black drum per day measuring at least 14 inches with one black drum measuring over 24-inches. For more information please visit www. myfwc.com. Beach fishing for spotted sea trout is excellent at the little rock jetties located at the southern portion of Amelia Island during all the incoming tide with the last portion of the flooding tide key. Also expect to catch redfish, flounder and bluefish while drifting a live shrimp under a small bright colored float. Working a clear plastic curly tail rigged to a 18th ounce led head jig slowly along the bottom is a very productive fishing tactic here as well. Large schools of bull redfish will be prowling the beaches for schools of menhaden, which can offer an amazing light tackle fishing challenge. Here redfish up to forty-pounds are seen creating a large turbelance on the surface while busting up large schools of menhaden. Also, commonly called pogies. Tailing redfish will be feeding in the flooded spartina marshes during a full moon tide which arrives on March 17th. Casting a DOA shrimp into an opening in the flooded grass is key where tailing redfish are feeding on fiddler crabs. A second spawn should take place for largemouth bass in many of Northeast Florida’s freshwater rivers. Once again fishing the last of the flooding tide in a shallow slough is key while fishing with live shiners, minnow type plugs and dark colored plastic worms. Lofton Creek continues to produce nice catches of freshwater bass during the last of the in-coming tide. Sheepshead fishing should be excellent at KBY artificial reef while fishing dead on the bottom with fiddler crabs, or a piece of conch. For more fishing information please visit www.ameliaangler.com, or call 904-261-2870 For more Amelia Island fishing information please call (904) 2612870, or visit www.ameliaangler.com

Terminal drum fishing tackle includes 30-50-pound braided fishing line spooled on either a large spinning, or level wind fishing reel. The fishing rod should have a stout butt section with a medium action tip, in lengths from 7-7 ½ feet. A six-ounce egg sinker is threaded onto the terminal fishing line and a black 100-pound barrel swivel connects the COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM

Destination Fishing! By Tom Schlichter

St. Augustine’s Shallow Water Reds And Trout

Capt. Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures prepares to release a typical St. Augustine redfish taken from shallow waters on a quiet soft plastic. Photo courtesy of Capt. Tommy Darrenger.

W

ith a claim of being the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine, Fla. is certainly rich in history. Stroll the streets and you’ll see Spanish colonial architecture, beautiful stretches of sandy beach and ample parklands awaiting exploration. Head out on the water, though, and you’ll also discover tremendous inshore fishing. “Redfish and trout action is really good in our inshore waters during the spring season,” said charter skipper Tommy Derringer of Inshore Adventures (www.Inshoreadventures.net; 904-377-3734). “There’s only a couple of months here when it’s clear enough to sight

CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4

fish, so you really want to take advantage of it. The action begins in January and lasts through March and into April. This is shallow water casting up on the flats and back in our numerous feeder creeks. Basically, any creek or flat between the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge and the Palm Valley Bridge is worth a shot.” According to Derringer, reds are easiest to spot on a dropping tide. The water is still pretty cold this time of year, so areas that warm quickly are where you’ll want to start. Look for oyster bars or shells on the bottom as the biggest draws, but if the tide gets really low depressions eventually hold most of the reds. Typically, inshore redfish in this area are “slots” weighing 2 to about 10 pounds. Casting a small soft-plastic minnow or grub with a light jig head is a productive and sporty way to get in on the fun. “You want to use a 2500 size spinning reel with a 7-foot medium-light action rod, 10-pound test braid and a lightweight white or chartreuse lure because fish can be spooky in the shallows,” noted Derringer. “Make long casts so as not to crowd your quarry, and choose a lure that lands with a soft splat rather than a big splash. Live shrimp and minnows work well, too, as long as they are presented gently.” If you can’t isolate reds, Derringer suggested backing out into the main channel of the Intracoastal Waterway and working edges and pockets for sea trout. This bite is best from late March into April as the water warms up. Try a MirrOdine Suspending Twitchbait, a soft plastic paddle-tail, or a live shrimp suspended beneath a float, and you’ll see plenty of action. Most of the trout here measure 16 to 20 inches, but if you pass on these and keep looking you might come across pods of bigger fish with some lunkers in the 5- to 8-pound class. If trailering your own boat, Derringer recommends launching at the Vilano Landing Boat Ramp. You can get bait and lures right across the street at The Bait Shack (904-217-3486). For overnight accommodations, The Inn at Comanche Harbor (904-825-0003; www. camacheeinn.com) is right next door to Comanche Cove Yacht Harbor (904-829-5676; www.comancheisland.com) where transient slips are generally available.

CONSTANT YELLOWFIN, DORADO AND

MASSIVE MARLIN By Craig Sutton

T

he action in northwest Costa Rica is outstanding. All five boats of our boats were on the water in January, with 83 trips logged for the month. Yellowfin tuna and dorado are a constant this time of year, but the team also fought a bunch of massive marlin. We released nine blue marlin, 11 striped marlin, three black marlin and 78 sailfish. We also melted a lot of ice with 256 dorado and 158 yellowfin tuna. The 32-foot Harvester was deep in the battle on Jan. 14, as client Kevin Poindexter battled a sweet blue marlin. The marlin was the headliner, but it was supported by an excellent sailfish release. They rounded out the day with a dorado and a yellowfin. Good thing, because it’s easy to work up a big appetite when catching all day long! The Adventurer is a 23-foot panga with the fishing tool of a boat twice her size and a bad attitude to match. This year we have added a Photo by Andy Blackledge bottom machine, tuna tube and outriggers.

Jeff Capen made history on Jan. 15 with the second-ever marlin release on the panga. A blue marlin release is a magnificent achievement on any boat, let alone the sneaky 23-foot switchblade. It’s proof you don’t need a big boat to catch big fish in Costa Rica! FishingNosara hall-of-famer and northeast FishingNosara representative Mark Cooney pulled off an amazing fishing feat with Capt. David on Jan. 18. What, you’ve never released a sailfish on a 23-foot panga with a tiller-steered motor? Legendary Texas angler Jerome McKown added to his record on Jan. 27 with a gaggle of sailfish releases with Capt. Carlos of the 32-foot Discoverer. Great work by Mate Kevin to safely wrangle and release these monsters. Of course these boys weren’t going hungry, thanks to a half-dozen excellent dorado scores. The flagship Wanderer is celebrating her 10th year of fishing in these waters, and one must marvel at the man who has commanded her from Day 1. It is no exaggeration that Capt. William and the Wanderer ran more trips last year than any boat in all of Central America. FishingNosara hall-of-famers Catherine Chase and Ron LaGro added to their legend on Jan. 19 with Capt. William. A striped marlin led off a great day of action. After Catherine’s release, Ron added a sailfish release. They rounded out the morning with a nice stack of dorado filets. This report barely scratches the surface of the blistering-hot action in Nosara. Remember, you can always check the FishingNosara Blog for daily catch updates. If you have been reading this report for a while and waiting for the right time to visit, stop wishing and come fishing! Call FishingNosara at 904-591-2161 or email craig@ fishingnosara.com.

H

ere are some of my favorite fish to eat in the lagoon along with some tips on how to catch them. It’s ok to eat fish from the lagoon, but do it in moderation. 1) Pompano: This silver-blue slab has some of the best white meat. It’s a cold-water fish and is usually caught between December and April on a variety of lures and live bait. Fish small jigs and pompano jigs around shallow drop-offs in 3 to 5 feet of water. Also look for them around bridges and deeper cuts. For live bait, use shrimp or sand fleas. 2) Snook: You can only keep one snook between 28 and 32 inches and only in certain months of the year. Closed season for snook is Dec. 15-Jan. 31 and June 1-Aug. 31. Snook have excellent flaky white meat. Snook can be caught on a variety of lures including topwaters, jigs and live bait. They prefer structure (piers, bridges, mangroves) and feed more actively at night. 3) Flounder: Often overlooked or targeted as table-fare, this species of fish has two eyes on one side of its heads and lies on the bottom waiting for bait to come by. I’ve caught flounder in the lagoon up to 5 pounds and sometimes three or four on an outing. Flounder love jigs and live bait, especially shrimp (live or dead). Fish for them on flats around bridges and on shallow flats in 3 to 4 feet of water. 4) Black drum and red drum (redfish): Black drum love any sort of crustacean, from shrimp to blue crabs and can also be caught on cut bait (ladyfish). Fish for them with bait around bridge pilings or under piers. Redfish will eat bait, and they’ll also take lures. Try a 4-inch jig with a paddle tail or a jig tipped with shrimp. 5) Snapper: I’ve fished for mangrove snapper (10” min) and lane snapper (8” min), and they can be caught easily on small jigs, jigs tipped with shrimp and shrimp. Fish around piers and structure and deeper areas on the flats. 6) Sheepshead and tripletail: Sheepshead are members of porgy family and eat crustaceans and barnacles. Shrimp, fiddler crabs and crabs are favorite baits. Fish for them on the bottom around piers and bridges. Tripletail will hit jigs, but fishing shrimp around buoys and floating markers is your best bet. 7) Mackerel and bluefish. Both species are fast and will hit any lure or live bait. I prefer mackerel to bluefish. They are cold-water fish and move into the lagoon during the winter months. They can be caught around structure, especially bridges with moving water. IS THERE A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE?

ranks of the invasive lionfish? Lionfish throughout the affected regions of the Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and some Caribbean island locations have all documented nasty-looking lesions or ulcers on their flesh. Currently, only a relatively small percentage of their populations are showing these signs. We have been following this event (lionfish showing skin lesions) for nearly two years now. Several researchers have been studying samples of ulcerated fish from many different locations. A relatively small percentage of lionfish are affected across the invaded areas. The northern Gulf of Mexico seemed to be a bit of a hot-spot about a year ago, but reports of skin lesions have been waning lately. It is suspected that some lionfish did not survive the “infection,” while others appeared to have survived with healed scars and seem to be doing well. These lesions are very similar in appearance to several other common fish-related skin diseases, but scientists have not been able to pin it down exactly. Should anyone encounter a lionfish that has signs of these lesions, report it to the FWC. MyFWC.com/FishKill and provide them with the following info: 1. Location 2. The number of lionfish you noted with ulcers 3. A photograph of what you saw, if possible

ishing has long been a tradition passed down through generations. From great-grandparents who manufactured tools and tackle out of the most basic materials all the way down to my generation’s tech-savvy methods of fishing, we all share something in common. The tug on the end of the line, the organized chaos and landing the fish are all part of the thrill that fishing entails. As an angler growing up in this day 1:14 of age, to realize Airline_Ad_CoastalAngler_8-1-14_Layout 1 8/1/14 PM I’ve Pagecome 1

how much of an impact conservation makes on the livelihood of the sport. When I was young, learning to let a fish go to swim another day was difficult, especially after spending so much time trying to catch it. It wasn’t until later when I understood the importance of catch and release and how it impacts the future of an ecosystem. Conservation has been a popular topic in recent times, with the Florida sugar companies being in the spotlight. Everyone has seen pictures of the widespread fish kills that devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast. With so many people dependent upon that fishery, catch and release along with other methods of conservation are a necessity for restoring this fishing landmark. Most seasoned fisherman agree that success isn’t completely dependent on how many fish one catches or how big they are. Success lies in the challenges that accompanied the fish and how the angler overcame them. The tremendous stories that arise from these outings are a true testament to the will and perseverance it takes. The ultimate display of appreciation comes in the form of releasing the fish back into its habitat. While I love fish tacos as much as the next person, I find it more fulfilling to watch a fish swim away, hopefully to be caught by someone else one day. The technology nowadays enables us to easily capture parts of the adventure. Looking through my camera roll, I not only see pictures of the fish I’ve caught, but also hundreds of stories of how I caught them. Envisioning a future that includes fishing comes with the responsibility of speaking up for the speechless: our waterways and its tenants. Educating people about the value of catch and release makes it possible for there to be a future in fishing. Your short-term sacrifices now will one day light up the face of a young angler yet to know what their new favorite hobby has in store. r spread Great Streams and Craft Beverages Await in Hendersonville, N.C. Photo by Nick Carter

I

f you’re an angler who enjoys following up a day on mountain trout streams with a refreshing craft beverage or two, cast your attention to the Blue Ridge mountain town of Hendersonville. This North Carolina town, about 22 miles south of Asheville, offers miles of stocked trout waters, as well as the popular Hendersonville Cheers! Trail. The two resources make it possible to spend the day catching three types of trout – rainbow, brown and brook – while spending an evening exploring three types of craft beverages – beer, wine and hard cider. First, the fishing part. North Mills River is the prime trout stream in the Hendersonville area. The river’s 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife, divvied between brook, rainbow and brown. Spring is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30. Another hot spot for trout fishing is just across the Henderson County line toward Brevard. The Davidson River offers miles of public trout waters that receive annual stockings of 16,500 fish. Other lesser-known spots for fishing near Hendersonville include

three streams on the eastern side of Henderson County, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery support waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want a unique experience, Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest provides not only a scenic setting for trout fishing, but also a unique one. Delayed harvest waters flow through undisturbed mountains and over several notable waterfalls. Those waterfalls were immortalized on Hollywood’s silver screen in The Last of the Mohicans, as well as the backdrop for the exploits of Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games movie. When the fishing is done, the Cheers! Trail awaits. The trail is one of North Carolina’s best, featuring 16 craft producers offering a variety of experiences. Beer fans love Sierra Nevada’s tasting room, which is one of the largest on the East Coast and features an expansive patio and outdoor amphitheater, while Bold Rock Hard Cider has emerged as a national leader in the hard cider industry and regularly hosts live music (indoors and outdoors), along with cidery tours and a food truck. Several craft producers on the trail create small-batch beverages prized for their quality and originality. Three breweries – Southern Appalachian, Triskelion and Guidon – are within a few blocks of each other in the Depot District, while Sanctuary Brewing Co. is only a few blocks away on Main Street. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Three wineries produce high-quality wines from European varietals. The newest – Point Lookout Vineyards – is located atop a 3,000-foot mountain with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, the area’s first vineyard, is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. And two miles from Saint Paul, Burntshirt Vineyards offers tastings in its renovated farmhouse overlooking rolling hills of vines. I am often asked when is the best time to plant fruiting plants. My answer is usually the same; the best time is 20 years ago or today. The second best time to plant is during the winter months. Plants are dormant, and can be easily shipped and planted with no stress on the plant because there is not a lot of maintenance once the plant or tree has been planted. Simply dig a good hole, water thoroughly

at planting, and take the rest of the winter off. Even though there are no signs of growth above ground, the root systems will have time to get adjusted to their new location and begin to initiate new root growth. There are plenty of advantages of growing your own edibles. First of all, you know what has been done over the course of the growing season from a chemical stand point. Second, the fruit just taste

better coming out of your home orchard versus buying fruit from the grocers that have little to no flavors. Thirdly, it is good for your soul and you will feel more connected to the environment and nature. Whether it is an apple tree, muscadine vine or a blueberry bush; now is the time to plant. Sheri Daye

s past president and current board member of IUSA (the organization that ratifies world records for spearfishing), I get to share the excitement of big fish applications. The entire IUSA board was amazed by a recent submission. We received word that Luis Viyella had speared a 480-pound yellowfin off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 23, 2018. If approved, this fish would not only be the new spearfishing world record, but it would also beat the current IGFA All-Tackle rod-and-reel record! The All-Tackle stands at 427 pounds, held by angler Guy Yocom and caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Viyella supplied the required photos of the fish, the measurements, the weighing, and the certified scale. He provided witnesses and documented the “Story of the Hunt” which was well-written and riveting. Viyella was new to freediving and bluewater hunting but accompanied by an experienced friend. They were targeting wahoo that day when the tunas showed up. He was excited when his buddy speared a 125-pound yellowfin. As requested, Viyella added a second shot to the fish—a common practice to secure the fish and make the extraction quicker and easier. A bigger tuna showed up, but Viyella’s speargun was already discharged and embedded in the 125-pound tuna, so he called out for his new Daryl Wong speargun from the boat. It wasn’t a bluewater gun, and it wasn’t the ideal set up, but he needed to act quickly. Viyella attached a line and float to the reel gun, dove down, and fired a well-placed shot into the tuna. After attaching additional floats, he made headway in raising the tuna toward the surface. His buddy dove down and placed a second shot to the head, helped manage the lines, and kept sharks at bay until it was landed—all the things a good buddy does.

News of this magnificent fish traveled fast. Viyella was told that, if approved, his fish would eclipse the current spearfishing record of 353 pounds. During the application process, he learned the rules the hard way. In order to qualify, one must shoot and land the fish without assistance from others. It was heartbreaking for Viyella and the board, but his catch is still outstanding, and IUSA awarded a meritorious award. Viyella accepted it with grace and gratitude. He said, “Inside the boat, we realized it was a very extraordinary, giant yellowfin tuna. I cannot describe our feelings of gratitude to God, our emotions, joy, sense of achievement, cheers, hugs, screams of happiness. It had been the most amazing day at sea, and the most exciting catch ever, and I had caught, on rod and reel, a 900-pound blue marlin and 600+ pound swordfish before. This bluewater apnea spearfishing catch was a higher dimension, another level of joy and sense of achievement. Glory goes to God for His love and generosity.” Amen to that, Mr. Viyella! May you continue to be blessed with that same sense of wonder and joy, for that is the real treasure of the sea. Anglers Seek To Cement Legacies At 2019 Bassmaster Classic

T

he 2019 Bassmaster Classic, scheduled for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River, will feature the usual mix of established pro fishing superstars and hungry young pros who are destined to be the stars of tomorrow. The 52 anglers converging on Knoxville will be gunning for the largest share of the $1 million prize fund, and they’ll be aiming to establish their angling legacy by winning the most important title in professional fishing. Among the field are eight former Classic winners, including four-time champion Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., and defending champion Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., who last year became one of only three anglers to claim back-to-back wins in the event. Seven of the pros have hoisted the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of

the Year trophy, including 2018 AOY winner Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., and Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., who has claimed the award three times. “The Classic is a showcase for some of the most accomplished bass anglers in the world,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “You’ll have veteran pros out there who’ve experienced the huge stage that is the Classic and excelled in that environment in the past. But you’ll also have some young guys who are just chomping at the bit to make a name for themselves. “That’s one of the most exciting things about the Classic—it literally will change someone’s life forever.” Anglers hungry for first-time Classic glory include Florida’s Drew Benton, Tennessee’s Brandon Lester and Arizona’s Clifford Pirch — just to name a few. Whoever wins the event, the immediate effects will be easy to see. There’s the world-famous Classic trophy, which weighs more than 40 pounds and is easily the most coveted piece of hardware in professional fishing. Then there’s the $300,000 first-place check and the chance to stand before an arena full of screaming fans as confetti cannons set the stage for the accomplishment of a lifetime. This year’s weigh-ins will be held in Thompson-Boling Arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee. As always, the Classic will be held in conjunction with the fan-favorite Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Known as the most important consumer show in the bass fishing world, the Classic Expo will be held in the Knoxville Convention Center and the adjacent World’s Fair Exhibition Hall. Companies from across the fishing industry use the Expo annually to debut new products, and fans will be able to purchase many lures, rods, reels and accessories for the first time anywhere. For more information about the Bassmaster Classic, go to www. bassmaster.com.

Baja’s Inshore Action

On The East Cape

By Nick Carter Big cubera snapper are just one of the species waiting inshore on the East Cape. This one was caught by Jim Rodriguez, a cameraman with the TV show Livin’ The Dream. Photo by Jimmy Nelson.

J

ust looking at a map will tell you the Sea of Cortez is a fish trap. Separated from the Pacific Ocean by Mexico’s nearly 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, it’s a 62,000 square mile canyon that drops to depths approaching 10,000 feet. The sportfishing out of Cabo San Lucas, on the Peninsula’s southern tip is legendary. It is a bustling destination where marlin, sailfish and tuna abound. But Capt. Jimmy Nelson, host of the TV show Livin’ The Dream, pointed to a quieter destination and some awesome fishing up the Peninsula’s East Cape. Out of the Buena Vista Beach Resort about an hour’s drive north of Cabo, the Sea of Cortez drops to 1,000-foot depths just a few hundred yards off sand beaches. There’s a fleet of sportfishing boats waiting to take anglers offshore to chase all the big pelagics, and the inshore action borders on unbelievable. Even shorebased fishermen can catch some species typically associated with long runs offshore. At a place renowned for billfish, Nelson said the inshore action is as much of a reason to go as the marlin. “You never know what you’re going to get. There’s all kinds of things that will be right there on the edge,” Nelson said. “Roosterfish, African pompano, cubera snapper, Sierra mackerel, even dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin tuna will hit your popper right off the beach.” Never knowing what’s on the end of the line requires anglers to gear up. This is not the same as inshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic. Nelson said casting 8-inch poppers or live lookdowns from shore is a ton of fun and requires 8000 size spinning reels. A big cubera snapper slamming your popper is a fight you’ll never forget. “It’s a rush,” he said. “You’re catching a bottomfish on top, so they go straight down to the bottom. You have to gear up with some pretty heavy tackle.” Trolling just off the beach is another tactic that puts anglers on a surprising array of the Pacific’s best sportfish. Big roosterfish might be primary target, but again, you never know what will eat when you’re pulling lookdowns and goggle eyes. Big yellowfin tuna have been known to surprise anglers just off the beaches, so 30 wide reels and heavy tackle are required. COASTALANGLERMAG.COM • THEANGLERMAG.COM
