t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

I’ve really come to enjoy fishing in September. With the Spillway closed, hopefully all that stuff to the west should be getting good. Heck, I’ll be thrilled to fish the near shore reefs off Bay St Louis and Waveland again. On those hot, still, calm days the triple tail fishing should be outstanding. Typically, we start our mornings extremely early. We usually get what we can outta the trout, reds and flounder. It’s so warm this time of year, it’s not unusual to fish a little deeper. Reefs and structures in 6 feet of water, or more are fantastic. Big live shrimp, pogies, mullet, croakers on the Carolina rigs work well. When the heat or limited fish box space become an issue, we fire up the big motor. There is absolutely no better way to beat the midday heat than cruising around the MS Sound, looking for triple tail. Just pay close attention to anything you might run across. Every buoy, piling, or floating piece debris is worth inspecting. A good frisky live shrimp is pretty tough to beat. It’s been a tough couple months, with all this fresh water covering up our water. I hope our buddies up in the northern and southern part of state can get a little relief, get outdoors and enjoy it.

Occasionally, fishing opportunities come along that can’t be passed on. Whether it’s a new location, a new species, or completely different techniques, you can learn from that experience. As the title says, fish are still fish. When the opportunity comes along to chase a new species, use the knowledge you have of familiar species to seal the deal. Predatory fish behavior can be summed up with two things, they want to be comfortable and they want to eat. Figure out what makes them feel comfortable, like safety from predators, ideal water temperature, etc and figure out how they eat, and you’ve done everything but got a bite. When I got the chance to fish in Florida’s “Nature Coast”, with the sole purpose of catching a snook, I used the knowledge I have of speckled trout and surprisingly, smallmouth bass to find and catch fish. Knowing how tides effect trout, helped me pinpoint areas on google maps to target. I looked for chokepoints and areas that should have a current seam. I had the right spots as far as tides, but when I actually got to those areas I had to pattern down even more. There was lots of “hard structure” such as oyster bars protruding out of the water. After seeing these, I started fishing that structure the same way I’ve fished behind rocks for smallmouth. It ended up being a solid pattern, as there were lots of snook stacked up feeding in those target areas. Finding fish was only half the battle, I still had to present a lure in a natural enough way to entice a strike. For that, I went with one of the best baitfish imitations there is; the Z-Man paddlerz paired with an Eye Strike Texas Eye jighead. I’d like to inject that I have no affiliation with either company, they just work really well! I’m a firm believer that color isn’t nearly important as the placement and presentation of a lure, but I chose a bright natural color based on the gin clear water clarity and sunny conditions I was fishing that day. Pearl white paired with a pearl eye jighead proved to be a solid choice. I varied my retrieve style, but an erratic, twitch, twitch, was what eventually proved to be effective. Fishing for multiple species helps you to round out skills that can help you with any species. Be sure to take those opportunities to fish in new places when you can, but don’t change tactics too much. Fish, are still fish. Good Vibes, Tight Lines, and God Bless.

August and September tend to be my favorite time of year to target the Mangrove Snapper, also locally known as the Gray Snapper here along the Gulf Coast. A lot of standing oil and gas platforms along the Mississippi and Louisiana coast hold an abundance of this species of Snapper. They range in size from under 1lb to upwards of 15 lbs. They put up a tough fight and have sharp canine-like teeth. Depending on the water color and what size fish are in a particular location, will determine what size fluorocarbon leader I’ll use since they can be a bit finicky and tricky to entice to eat a bait. I prefer dirtier water conditions when targeting these snapper. In this dirtier water, I’ll tend to use 40-50lb leader when wrangling with the larger size mangroves to help pull them out away from the structure as they tend to head for cover as soon as you set the hook. And in clearer, greener water, I’ll drop the leader size to maybe 20-30lb Seaquar Flourocarbon. I’ll rig up a stout rod such as my Penn Carnage II jigging rod and spool the Penn Fathom 25 or 30 size reel with 65lb Power Pro braid and top it off with the Flourocarbon leader and tie on a Mustad live bait hook with uni knots for all of my connections. Bait of choice is as easy as fresh, cut chunks of pogy . Live baits also work well for the larger Mangrove Snappers. Chumming the waters behind the boat will sometimes pull them up from beneath and can attract Red snapper or Cobia as well. Larger mangroves will put up a good fight and can add a lot of action to a day of fishing. Their sharp teeth and habit to run for cover into the rig can cause a loss of a lot of tackle so be prepared with ample amounts of tackle and bait.

Saltwater Spotlight Captain Frank Parker Biloxi, MS Frank is a native of Biloxi, Mississippi with a family history of over 100 years involved in the local maritime coastal food business. Frank’s family fishing history goes back to the 1850’s when sailing vessels were used to trawl for shrimp. He and his wife of 16 years live in a historical family home with 4 children including a set of twins. As Captain of GUNSMOKE, a 42 ft. Bobby Boudreaux twin diesel shrimp trawler, Frank is also involved in the crab harvesting business as well as Oyster Aquaculture. Frank’s educational background centered on Marine Biology and Fishing Management from courses at MS Gulf Coast Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. After years of family business experience Frank bought his own shrimp boat in 1997, and over the past 20+ years he has run his own seafood harvesting company. Frank’s love of the Gulf Coast seafood industry goes beyond taking care of his family and managing his personal business. Q. How has the commercial seafood industry changed in the past 5 years? A. The globalization of the seafood market has driven prices down along with quality in many cases. However,
people are becoming more and more aware of this change and are looking closer at labels and demanding better quality. The internet and social media have done a lot to spread the word and help stabilize the US market. Q. What aspects of our current environmental conditions have and will affect the seafood industry. A. Not unlike the public concerns after the BP oil spill in the Spring of 2010, there is heightened caution regarding the blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom of this summer. Customers ask about it and sales have certainly been affected. Closings have been precautionary but currently sales have begun to pick up again. Q. How has your oyster aquaculture program reacted to current conditions? A. Unfortunately with the intrusion of an overabundance of fresh water driving salinity down, the oyster farming operation is a loss at the present. However, the support of the state of Mississippi through the Dept. of Marine Resources has been and will continue to be the path to success for this program. We will start farming again this October and look to a late fall harvest in 2020. I am now and will continue to be optimistic regarding oyster farming. It is a great way to have a superior product on the table and can be profitable for all concerned. Q. Where and how do you normally run your boat for shrimp? A.I generally work from Mobile Bay to the Mouth of the Mississippi River. Other times we have run from as far away as Key West, FL and back West to Brownville, TX. Our nets are set for 3 feet to 20 feet and no deeper. Q. How often to you take Gunsmoke out to the Gulf for shrimp? A. Most of the time we make weekend runs and are back in port for retail sales. Inshore Football or Fishing
September, September, September… oh what to do in September. So many things start happening this month. Football season is kicking off everywhere and dove season begins in different parts of the state. Bow hunters are making last minute preparations by hanging stands, cutting shooting lanes, and target practicing. So if you’re like me and don’t care about football or can’t get into hunting until it cools off, it’s a perfect time of year. Less people on the water and the humidity starts dropping enough to make outside activities bearable along with an occasional light cold front. Lucky for us these early cold fronts usually don’t pack enough punch to negatively affect the fishing like the big ones that we get in winter. This means it’s a perfect month to fish, no matter what species you target. White trout will start to gather up around piers, reefs, and structures as well as lights. Night fishing around lights is always a blast, you never know what you’re going to catch. They really stack up in the fall before they head out to deeper water for winter. The great thing about white trout is when you find them, you can usually catch as many as you want to clean. This is a good option for taking kids fishing. White trout can be caught on or near the bottom with any type of live bait or dead bait. Soft plastics on bottom work well also. Flounder, redfish, and speckled trout are all available species this month also. The specks will begin to move back into the bayous from their summer spawning areas out front and gorge before the winter temperatures hit. Soft plastics on a jig head or under a cork should get the bite going. Try tipping the hook with a small piece of cut bait if things are slow. If you find yourself in a really good bite, try a double rig. A double rig is just two jig heads tied together with one being longer than the other. The slot reds are still in their normal hangouts and can usually be caught along with the specks and flounder. Target the reds around rocks, docks, and other structures. They can usually be found at the mouth of bayous or any openings where water may flow in/out. Try throwing soft plastics to those areas as well and watch for the tail movements that sometime give a redfish location away. Now for the flounder… Flounder may be caught using any of these other methods as well as live bait on a Carolina rig. Try fishing around rocks as well as other types of structure. One good thing about living on the coast is the availability of fishing options. You could catch reds, specks, and flounder in the morning then make a short run up river and catch bass, bream, and crappie. The cooler months will not only help with the largemouth bite, it will also draw out the elusive spotted bass that prefer to be active during the cooler months. Spotted bass are usually found in current and can be caught on the same lures you’re catching largemouth on. Bass will begin to feed more, knowing that winter weather will soon be approaching. Worms, jigs, and crankbaits can still be used to put together a pattern. An often overlooked fall presentation is the spinnerbait. The spinnerbait most closely resembles baitfish which is key for their diet during the fall. Don’t leave the topwater box at home though, just because the air temperature may be lower it doesn’t mean the water temp has dropped. Fall has a way of bringing that increased activity like we normally see in early spring. The bass will still hit the buzzbaits as well as frogs and other topwater lures. Bream can still be found in the deeper holes and around structure in shallow areas adjacent to deeper water as well as crappie. Remember to keep your catch iced down and stock that freezer for winter. The grass growth should slow down some giving you extra days to wet a line and don’t forget there are plenty of options this month, so when the football game is on, the bite should be also…

Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag
or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head.
