T

he rod doubled, and it was all Jack could do to hang on until his big brother Jimmy got over to help. Then our friend Jacob grabbed on too. Jacob was on the front grip of the rod, Jack in the middle— reeling for all he was worth—and Jimmy on the rod handle. It was quite a sight as they worked together to reel something up from the dark blue 115 feet below. They managed to get the fish up for a bit, but then the rod bowed hard. Now it was pulling line and leaving the boat behind. With a magnificent pull, the line suddenly went slack. Jack’s fish had been sharked! All that was left was a head. The fight hadn’t lasted long, but man it was exciting! This was on a business trip from Georgia through central and south Florida, during which I hoped to squeeze in some fishing. In speaking

with a customer about Purge Right purging compounds, the conversation inevitably turned to fishing. I told him I wanted to catch peacock bass and Mayan cichlid. He informed me that the canal across the street had both. That was great news! Before heading to Florida, I contacted my friend and Florida local Chris Dean. He wanted to fish, too. My friend Eric Crowley, who guides in Georgia but fishes a lot in Florida, clued me in to some good locations. We were set. I met Chris and his son Jack at the canal, and we caught Mayan cichlids until dark. We had a blast. It’s like bream fishing back home, only much more colorful. That evening over supper, when the boat Chris and I hoped to fish from fell through, my dreams of catching giant snook vanished like ice cream on a hot day. I spent the next half hour texting and calling captains. Nobody had any openings the next day. Later, Chris’s other son, Jimmy, called with some intel on bank spots where we might catch peacock or snook. Jimmy was MIA the next morning, but when he finally called he had come through in a big way. His buddy Jacob had a boat ready to go chase snook. All five of us—Jimmy, Jacob, Chris, Jack and I— loaded up and headed through the mangrove jungle with a tank full of bait. As we passed the inlet, we noticed the waves didn’t look too bad seaward. We decided to ride out and see how it was. So glad we did! We caught the jack that was sharked as well as several snappers, triggers, cobia, amberjacks, and a remora that latched onto the side of the boat when we tried to release it. I also caught my first African pompano. As I drove back to Georgia the next day, I daydreamed about my next business trip to West Palm. I hope Florida folks realize how good they’ve got it. n early 2018, FWC awarded $250,000 to five organizations to research and develop methods to remove lionfish from deep-water habitat. Also, the National Marine Fisheries Service has approved a permit to set out 100 cages to study whether traps can be effective. Lionfish can be found in reefs, mangroves and seagrass meadows. They are voracious eaters that consume more than 50 different species, including shrimp, grouper and lobster. They have no natural predators in the Atlantic, and some scientists believe lionfish are so widespread that we may not be able to reverse their effect. Florida has taken steps to address the lionfish problem. Among the measures are a prohibition on the import of lionfish for aquariums, a ban on lionfish in aquaculture, yearly lionfish fishing derbies, a phone app to collect data and raise awareness of the dangers of lionfish and encouraging a market for their tasty meat. The FWC awards went to the University of Florida to field test strategies for harvesting lionfish in deep water using non- containment curtain traps. The Reef Environmental Education Foundation will assess modified lobster trap and curtain trap designs and assess whether sound can be used as an attractant. American Marine Research Company will work to develop an underwater drone that can be used to control lionfish populations. R3 Digital Sciences will develop fish trap extension kits for existing commercial spiny lobster traps to convert them into smart traps capable of targeting lionfish in depths greater than 130 feet. The Atlantic Lionshare Ltd. will develop a remotely-operated vehicle called the Reef Sweeper to harvest lionfish from beyond recreational diving depths.

he Holidays are here! In the rush of constant holiday shopping and festive parties, it’s sometimes challenging to remember why we’re officially celebrating and what the season is ultimately about. So, we at Pura Vida Divers thought we’d recommend a few alternative ocean-related “gift” ideas to keep with the true giving spirit of the holidays and aid in local conservation. Our first charity of choice for you Florida ocean lovers is Friends of Our Florida Reefs. Formed in 2015, Friends of Our Florida Reefs assists and enhances the critical efforts of the FDEP to conserve and protect the southeast section of the Florida Reef Tract. Their goal is to work as a dedicated citizen support organization “filling significant budget gaps, preparing for rapid response to emergencies and self-initiate direct action, education and outreach.” We like this charity because of the direct local impact to our Florida reefs and the local community. We pledge this holiday season, for every new Facebook “like”

during the month of December, Pura Vida Divers will donate $1 to Friends of Our Florida Reefs. This is an easy way to participate in charitable giving this year and only takes a quick click on your computer at this link: https://www.facebook.com/Pura.Vida.Divers. You can also give directly to Friends of Our Florida Reefs via their website in the form of donations, memberships, corporate memberships and vehicle donation options: http://www.floridareef.org/. Additionally, we recommend Project AWARE. As their mission statement proclaims, “Project AWARE is a global movement of scuba divers protecting our ocean planet one dive at a time. Focused on the critical issues of sharks in peril and marine debris, Project AWARE empowers thousands to work together for a clean, healthy and abundant ocean planet.” Pura Vida Divers adopted Phil Foster Park several years ago and more recently adopted Blue Heron Bridge through Project AWARE’s Adopt a Dive Site Program. As such, we host quarterly volunteer shoreline and underwater cleanups where we report all our marine debris findings to Project AWARE. The data we collect helps bridge the gap in knowledge and influences long-term waste management solutions at local, national and international levels. Our next organized cleanup is Saturday, Dec. 15. Check-in at Phil Foster Park begins at 9 a.m. Alternately, contribute directly to Project AWARE by purchasing a membership or giving a donation via their website at: http://www.projectaware.org/. Or, take any Scuba Diving class with us and we will donate $10 on your behalf through the 100% AWARE program! In addition to the newest iPhone, LOL doll, or plastic who-seewhats-it, give the gift of ocean conservation and feel empowered with your conscientious choice. Plus, donations to both organizations are tax deductible so you get a little holiday gift for yourself as well! Happy shopping to you, and if you’re in the neighborhood and want to come join us at our festive holiday party, please stop by Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m. for food, drinks and general merriment!

Debi Gabriel, of Boneafide Charter Company in the lower Florida Keys, said the Keys offer unrivaled outdoor experiences as well as the opportunity to educate visitors about the principles of sustainable recreation. “We became involved with the Blue Star Fishing Guide program because we are the eyes and ears of the Florida Keys sanctuary,” she said. “Teaching people about how important it is to conserve, preserve and educate is what we feel needs to be done in order to sustain our precious fishery.” Captains and guides in the program receive online training that covers general education about the sanctuary, its diverse habitats and its By Kennedy Gullatte fisheries. Dear Gene, I understand that you are the Editor and Publisher of Coastal Angler Magazine for the Miami and Fort Lauderdale area. I am writing to you in hopes of soliciting your assistance in a cause that I am spearheading. In April, my new Garmin GPS was stolen from my boat. After the theft, I wondered why my GPS did not have security measures such as: 1) passcodes required upon start up 2) the integration of tracking devices/systems to find stolen GPS units and 3) the ability to remotely disable stolen GPS units. After all, my iPhone has passcode and tracking features and the OnStar system in my truck allows my windows to be unlocked or the engine to be shut down remotely. I have commenced an effort to bring this issue to the attention of Garmin, Raymarine, Furuno and Simrad through the launching of my Facebook page (Marine Electronics Industry) Stop the GPS Thefts! I’m trying to spread the word on this effort amongst the members of the boating and fishing community so that, together, we can urge the marine electronics industry to make their GPS units more secure from theft. I have been in communications with several representatives of the aforementioned companies, all of whom have been receptive to having a dialogue on this issue. Some have even indicated to me that they already have some ideas in the works to make their units more secure. I would appreciate any help you could be in bringing awareness of this cause. It is very rare when consumers of a product have the opportunity to influence the conduct of the manufacturer. This opportunity now exists and I could use as much support I can from the boating and fishing community. If your readers are not on Facebook, they can email me at bmarx@marlowadler.com so I can tell them how they can help. Very truly yours,

Dear Bruce, Thank you for taking time to send us a letter regarding your efforts to stop the theft of marine electronics. Unfortunately, marine related thefts have become far too common in South Florida. For the record, I fully support your cause and am happy to help in any way that I can. I plan to bring this issue to our Corporate Editor so that we can gain more exposure for your cause. I look forward to speaking with you soon. Best regards,

very year, thousands of anglers descend on sunny South Florida with their sights set on sailfish season. Charter boats and tournament fisherman alike spend countless hours checking kites, respooling reels and catching and storing live bait in hopes of outdoing their competitors. The action often starts slow with a cold front or two pushing some fish down and sparking interest and anticipation. Around December, these fronts start coming through with much more regularity and intensity. The falling temperatures and north winds get fish moving and much more active. Sailfishing is mostly a game full of nuances and details. Seasoned captains know the importance of quality live bait and spend countless days and nights stocking

forecastS up. Baits such as goggle eyes, threadfin herring and spanish sardines are a critical part of any outing. Catching these fish is just part of the equation that leads to ultimate success. Every baitfish must be carefully transported back to the dock and unloaded in large bait pens where they will be fed and cared for until ready to use. Professional fisherman will also go through all of the systems, gear and tackle on the boat. Any issues usually get addressed ahead of a charter or tournament. It is important that all of the electrical outlets that supply power to the electric kite reels be checked to make sure they are working properly. Any livewell pumps that are old or worn should also be replaced in order to avoid losing valuable baitfish. A lot of tournaments have been lost before they started due to issues with bait and or live livewells. Boat builders have addressed

Capt. Orlando released this sailfish to fight another day.

this issue by incorporating pump systems that come equipped with backup pumps or sea chests. Many of today’s high powered center consoles can be ordered with up to four built in livewells capable of handling even the most extreme demands. Livewell systems should always be carefully matched to the needs of baits they will hold. Another ritual that is important to success is that of tying lots and lots of leaders. People often ask why the need for so many leaders. Are we really planning to catch 50, 75 or 100 sailfish? More often than not, you won’t need all of these leaders, but don’t forget that other hungry fish like mahi and kingfish can chew up your rigs in a big hurry. I still remember what occurred during a tournament that I was invited to fish a few years ago. Upon stepping onto the boat in the morning, I asked the captain where he kept the extra leaders and his response was “we have 18 rigged rods, so we don’t need them”! To make matters worse, he used a leader system that made swapping leaders very slow. As soon as we put out the first spread, we were welcomed by a hungry pack of school size dolphin followed by a pack of snake kings. In less than one hour we had to practically stop fishing in order to rig most of those 18 rods. Fortunately, the kings and dolphin 4 GREATER MIAMI

finally left us alone and we manage to catch a few sailfish. I guess the point that I’m trying to make is that preparation is the key to success. Once your boat, gear and bait is in order you’ll need to know where to fish. A little networking and a few phone calls before you head out can be helpful in finding productive areas. Social media can also be helpful in getting a feel for what is going on in your area. Also, don’t forget to listen to your VHF radio while fishing so that you can get a better idea on current conditions. Follow these tips and you will be have a season to remember. I’d like to take a moment to wish everyone, especially our military and first responders a great holiday season. Fighter

ust a few weeks ago, I had the honor of participating in a special fishing tournament put on by Freedom Fighter Outdoors. Launched in February of 2014, F.F.O. runs 4 to 6 fishing tournaments a year out of Lighthouse Point, FL and Montauk, NY for the benefit our Veterans. The night before fishing, F.F.O. hosted a wonderful dinner for the Veterans, volunteers and supporters. The logistics for the next day of fishing was discussed and gift bags were handed out to the Veterans and boat captains. It certainly was a great atmosphere and a fun way to kick off the event. The next morning, everyone gathered at Lighthouse Point Marina in anticipation of a fun day. I was assigned to fish aboard Shaka, a 39’ SeaVee with Capt. Jac Paul-Hus at the helm. Joining us for the day was SGT Mike Burke and SGT Brian Bradley. Both served overseas in the U.S. Army. Mike served in Iraq from 2006 to 2008. Brian served two tours in Iraq in 2003 to 2004 and 2006 to 2008 and a third tour in Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011. We headed out of Hillsboro Inlet with wahoo on our brains as the tide and moon were perfect. Just north of Boca, mates Joe Peros and Anthony Ard got the baits in the water behind the planers and it was on. Within a few minutes, we had the first bite and Brian jumped on the rod. Cranking with his left hand on the conventional reel was a bit awkward, but within a few minutes, we had a decent barracuda in the boat. Next is was Mike’s turn and he made quick work of another barracuda. The ocean was teaming with life and we saw many schools of blackfin tuna and bonito crashing baits on the surface. Certainly there had to be some wahoo feeding under those schools. Capt. Jac and I discussed switching gears and putting up the kites to see if we could get our Freedom Fighters on the numerous tuna and bonito, but he wanted to stick with the planers for a few

398_Miami.indd 6

more minutes. Then it happened. The port side planer went off and it was on. Mike hopped on the rod and started cranking. Once the planer was to the rod tip, Joe began to hand line the fish towards the boat and he commented that there was some weight to it. As the fish got close to the boat we could see the color. It was a nice wahoo and he was lit up big time. The fish tried to make another run, but Anthony stuck it with the gaff and the battle was over. We all began to hoot and holler and there was no shortage of high fives. Mission accomplished! We made a quick move and set up a drift with the kite up and a few flat lines. For the next hour or so, our Veterans took turns reeling in kingfish and bonito. At that point, it really didn’t matter if we caught anything else. We reeled everything in and headed back towards the inlet with the tunes cranking. Back at the marina, everyone gathered at the Nauti Dog restaurant for a first class lunch where prizes donated by sponsors of Freedom Fighter Outdoors were handed out to the Veterans. Everyone in attendance had smiles on their faces and the fellowship we all shared was amazing. Personally, I was humbled by the entire experience. It was a pleasure to spend the day with Mike and Brian, as well as the crew of Shaka. Freedom Fighter Outdoors is a first class organization that is making a difference in the lives of injured service members and their families. Integrating back into civilian life after military service is not an easy transition for many of our Veterans. By raising awareness and seeking public aid to help with needs, services and activities, Freedom Fighter Outdoors is making great strides in assisting our nation’s injured Veterans. You can learn more about this amazing organization by going to www.freedomfighteroutdoors.org and you can donate at www. freedomfighteroutdoors.org/donate.

Fish or Fiction? By Michael Walrath

S

One Week Away

cotty Jackson grew up fishing the Chesapeake Bay. He lived in Florida now, and despite being a good light tackle fisherman, he’d become enamored with stories and pictures of Florida’s beautiful bonefish and tarpon and had recently gone “all in” on a bid to learn the poetic art of salt-water fly fishing. His father Dan, an extremely accomplished fisherman, was more than skeptical. A little wind, a loose knot, a markedly reduced range – in Dan’s view, fly-fishing was a far less effective method which made harder, that which was already hard enough. Having not yet caught his first fish on fly in Florida, he packed his new gear and flew home to more familiar environs; his family’s fishing cabin on the Chesapeake. Scotty had a whole lot to prove to himself. In short, he needed this. On the first day in Maryland, they found birds on a huge school of breaking fish and Dan, throwing

a shiny metal spoon, hooked up on his first cast, then twice more on the next two. But Scotty struggled with the stiff breeze, clumsily stretching but failing to reach the school. Use the double-haul; keep casting; stiff back-cast; stay calm, push your loop into the wind; concentrate on your strip and be ready to set; don’t give up, he counseled himself. “Fish on!” Scotty howled as his fly rod finally doubled over, the drag singing for the first time. But just as suddenly, the rod snapped back with a hollow rattle, the leader cut by the sharp teeth of his wouldbe first fish on fly. Frustrated, he slammed his fly rig into the rod holder and grabbed a bait-caster. Dan smiled but said nothing as they motored from school to breaking school, boating blues and stripers all afternoon long. The next three days were different versions of the same, until an engine failure sidelined the boat

and ensured Scotty’s first fish on fly would elude him, even here. His best friend “Hoppy” joined him for his last two days, but without a boat, they were limited to fishing from the pier. As always, they drank beers and told stories and laughed late into the night but tonight, the smell and the slippery feel of the squid made Scotty sick; it reminded him of his clean, shiny fly rig, of missed opportunities and of failure. He so desperately needed to find his confidence and bring it back to Florida. Sunday morning, mere hours before his flight, Scotty stared somberly out the window at the lazy gulls perched on the empty boat lift. Then he saw them. The birds saw them too, dropped from the pilings and rushed noisily to the east. “Come on Hop!” he shouted as he burst out the back door toward the garage. Over his shoulder he called to Dan, “Dad, grab my rod and meet us on the beach!” Scotty and Hoppy snatched up the dusty old canoe and scurried across the grass to the sand. Dan handed off the fly rod as they passed, two new anchovy flies buried neatly into the cork rod-butt. No one spoke. Within seconds they were paddling swiftly toward the boiling school of fish. Scotty shot Hoppy a thankful smile and saw his father watching through the telescope, surely thinking it impossible to do from a leaky old canoe, what he couldn’t in four days on the boat. But this was about much more than catching a fish. It represented

hope and strength and selfconfidence and Scotty truly believed he could do it. He had to. Within minutes they were on them, in the middle of swarming mass of diving gulls and crashing blues and stripers, Scotty’s hands shook as he stripped line for his first false cast. His practice paid off. Even seated in the back of an unstable canoe, he rolled out a fifty-foot cast, right on the mark. The water instantly exploded, and his rod doubled over. The bright yellow fly line whipped through the guides and the drag screamed as the deeply bowed rod pulsed up and down, its tip nearly touching the water. Gulls shrieked overhead and splashed all around them as a thousand frenzied bluefish tore into the school of bay anchovies, except one. The fish that felt the sting of Scotty’s hook raced north. Almost into the white backing, he applied pressure and Hoppy swung the canoe around in pursuit. After a fifteen-minute fight that was sweeter than any he’d known, the fish wallowed next to the canoe, spitting mouthfuls of baitfish. Scotty lifted it aboard and with sweat dripping in his eyes, he proudly turned toward shore and held his catch high, hoping it filled the whole telescope. Dan smiled as he slowly pulled away from the eyepiece. Scotty smiled too, imagining his father’s surprise. “Well, I’ll be damned. He did it.” “Now I can go home, to Florida,” Scotty comfortably assured himself.

D

ecember brings the first wave of Sailfish pods as they start moving through in depths ranging from 60 to 180 feet of water. Usually in December I will always get double sailfish hook ups on the right day. Kayak anglers need to pick and choose their days wisely in the winter months, with cold fronts moving through bringing some extreme conditions, but also awesome fishing. My choice of tackle for catching sailfish on a kayak is 30 to 40lb mono leader or fluorocarbon to a 3/0 to 4/0 circle hook. I like to go stealthy on my gear when targeting sailfish. Make sure your reel can hold at least 300 yards of line. These fish are one of the fastest fish in the ocean and can make strong runs when on your kayak. My target depth is slow trolling a live goggle eye from 80 to 150 feet of water. I like to fish on an outgoing tide, straight out from local piers or inlets. Fishing for kingfish in December has always been very

ogfish closed last month, but we still have groupers through December, and the drop in water temperature into the middle seventies will bring them in shallower. This time of year, even black and gag groupers are often seen on the outside edge of our first reef, which drops from 10 feet to about 30 feet. They are very spooky so you’ll need a long range gun to hit them accurately, or they’ll shake off a poor shot. I use a freeshaft gun with a backup shaft most of the time, freediving or on scuba, because I can usually extract them with the second shot. These big drop offs have many deep cracks and caves, so a narrow beam spotlight mounted under your gun is another big help when seconds matter. The most memorable grouper I lost on this reef line was a 20 pound black that got real skinny in a deep hole and a big green moray

spotty for me in the kayak. From 80 to 120 feet I’ll usually pick up a couple 15 pounders and if I’m lucky a nice 25 pounder usually mid depth. Schools of mahi mahi will be running through South Florida in the winter months. What’s great about fishing for dolphin in the winter, is those east winds blowing these fish in close range for kayak anglers. I will always catch a few dolphin

in 180-200 feet around weed patches in the months of December. Look for the weed lines and color changes and fish along those areas. My choice of tackle for mahi mahi is the same as for catching sailfish. Sometimes I will throw a stinger rig on when fishing along a weed patch. The occasional wahoo will be swimming either beneath a school of dolphin or up and down

eel decided it was going to be his dinner, not mine. Out deeper and on big wrecks many divers prefer fast shooting line guns with slip tips to hold onto big groupers, which works for them if they can get the shot. I still freeshaft for bottom fish and often add a third shaft on scuba. The Guy Harvey Wreck, in 145 feet of clear water, was an example of an out-of-range for line guns, that I freeshafted on a 35 pound black from 30 plus feet away. (The shot taken only because of high consistency shooting and the groupers position on the wreck.) Attached is a photo of Rick Johnson, a student of mine, who shot this 70 pound gag in 225 feet of water, with a line gun. (That’s 25 pounds bigger than my best gag!) Shoot straight and dive safe!

the weed lines. Bottom fishing is always solid during the winter months 1 to 2 miles offshore. On a good day I have caught snowy grouper around the deep wrecks in around 200 plus feet of water. I’ll use a 4 to 5 ounce egg weight depending on current, with 15 feet of 40lb mono leader to a 3/0 circle hook, with a juicy pilchard or goggle eye. I tend to prefer using pilchard when fishing for grouper and snapper. For jigging over the deep wrecks I use a glow in the dark jig or my go to pink colored jig. Make sure your mono leader is at least 50lb test. 've been writing about fishing for many years! Each month we share fishing reports on where to catch fish, how to catch them and what's going on. This month I'd like to switch gears and talk to you about something that's really catching on in the fishing world and medical fields. I have been using fishing to help rehabilitate our Veterans. For the last 10 years or so, I've shared the beauty of the one and only Florida Everglades and all its wonders with Veterans and Make a Wish participants. Whether it was the landscape, water lilies, birds, nature or just bending a rod, it all has had a positive effect on them. I try to teach along the way so that Veterans would be productive no matter where they fished. My thought was if they were successful at it, they would continue to do it. Since the start of Fishing with America's Finest, we now have Veteran guides and staff, a great group of volunteers and

JANUARY 10-12, 2019 ORLANDO, FLORIDA By CAM Staff

S

urf Expo’s Bluewater category launched last year as an examination of the crossover occurring between fishing brands and the larger market of coastal life. Since then, the show has become a must-attend event for fishing and boating retailers savvy enough to stay ahead of the trends water-loving consumers crave. The world’s largest and longest-running board and watersports show has packed the floor of its Bluewater—offshore, inshore and freshwater fishing—category headed into the Jan. 10-12 show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Popular brands traditionally associated with the waterman and outdoor sporting lifestyle will show off their latest and greatest, giving retailers a hands-on first-look at the products that will drive the industry in 2019. Included in the Bluewater category are top brands like Bluewater sponsor Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Yeti, Otterbox, Fish Hippie, AFTCO, Guy Harvey, Marsh Wear, 5Fin, Salt Life, Bimini Bay, Hooked Soul, Heybo, XTRATUF, Dry Case, Bluewater Gear, Wave Life, Sunday Afternoons and more. Many of fishing’s big hitters will be there along with a huge contingent of brands that appeal to the on-the-water lifestyle. With the crossover evident in today’s marketplace, retailers and outfitters who target only their small niche are missing out on a powerful revenue source. Why sell to just the hardcore boater and angler when you could be unloading cool merchandise on the angler as well as his entire family? “The Bluewater section offers the opportunity for buyers to see the latest in trends for fishing and boating apparel and accessories at a time when retailers can leave their store,” said Kenneth Andres, with Surf Expo. “With our confluence from southern California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this is a trend-setting show.” The economy is churning and consumer spending and confidence levels are higher than they have been for almost 20 years. Surf Expo is a timely opportunity for retailers to preview product for what promises to be a very busy spring season for fishing, boating and watersports retailers. “January is the best time to preview and order new product lines before the season starts,” said Andres. “Retailers can get out of their shops to talk with exhibitors and see and touch the product before they order, plus take advantage of early incentive discounts.” And for the angling marketplace, where there may be a down season but there is no off-season, Surf Expo will feature an array of exhibitors offering at-once product to fill the racks. This is an opportunity to stock the hottest new gear before the competition has even seen it. The show features more than 2,500 booths of apparel and hardgoods and a full line-up of special events, including fashion shows, awards ceremonies, education and demos. Average buyer and exhibitor turnout exceeds 28,600 attendees per show. And it’s a trade-only show, which eliminates the hubbub and massage-chair hawkers of open-to-the-public trade shows. Surf Show is intentionally held during retail down time—the January restocking period for outdoor-sports retailers—so it is a marketplace to get business done in a laid-back atmosphere. “When people come to the Surf Expo for the first time, they notice the relaxed, cool atmosphere. It’s that lifestyle we all buy into, and there are a lot of beautiful people at a surf show,” said Andres. “It’s just a great place to be if you’re in the watersports industry. If you’ve got a fishing, boating, or watersports shop, come check it out for yourself.” For more information, on January’s Surf Expo in Orlando, go to www. surfexpo.com.

very few years a new technique explodes on the bass fishing scene. Many of these trends just fade away, but some endure and become a part of every bass angler’s arsenal. The technique of the moment is the Ned rig. It is excellent for big numbers of spotted bass and smallmouths. It’ll catch largemouths, too. And it really shines when the fishing gets tough. On post-frontal days in winter, when bass are deep on vertical structure, it’s time to rig up a Ned and go to work. It is the perfect technique when bass are looking for a meal that is small and slow moving. A Ned rig is a miniature soft-plastic stick bait threaded on a light 1/8- to 1/32-ounce mushroom-style jighead. A drop of superglue holding the 3- to 5-inch worm to the jighead works wonders for making this rig durable. When fishing at winter depths, light line should be matched with a light spinning rod with a supple tip. Go as light as you dare, with 4- to 8-pound-test braid finished off with a fluorocarbon leader. When fish are active, a Ned worked steadily along the bottom is deadly. When they are sluggish, it’s better to let the jig sit on the bottom, allowing the bait’s vertical tail to do the work with the slightest shake of the rod tip. It’s not the most exciting way to fish, but it catches fish—sometimes when nothing else will.

hose who have seen his show “Man Fire Food” will recognize Roger Mooking as the iconic host of what has become the ultimate look at extreme outdoor or fire/smoke based cooking. Each week Roger introduces us to passionate and inventive outdoor cooking aficionados and an array of epic custom-built apparatuses designed to cook everything from 200-pound sturgeon to whole cows on a massive homemade spit. Roger’s visits give us insight into the innovative extremes outdoor cooks utilize in their pursuit of perfection. If you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, “Man Fire Food” is a must-watch program. We recently caught up with Roger to discuss the show’s success and rich content. CAM: Roger, your show has become a must-watch series for anyone who mans a grill. Why do you think your show has become so popular? Roger: Over the course of the last 7 seasons, we’ve seen an amazing array of outdoor and flame-inspired cooking devices and techniques featured on the show. If you love outdoor cooking, then you’re probably going to like the show. People just love being outside with loved ones. Backyard barbecues have been a longstanding tradition; in fact, you could say that tradition may even date back to the most primitive use of fire itself. There’s also something very special about slowing down and taking the time it demands to tend a hypnotizing fire and be immersed in the full experience, and getting to eat at the end of that entire adventure. The smells, sounds, sights of nature and breaking the hectic pace that a lot of us live at… it’s needed. CAM: So, you think cooking outdoors is somehow satisfying a primal urge? Roger: When I look back at some of the massive cuts of meat that have been prepared on previous episodes, it does seem like fire and food is primal, and I think we would all have to agree that cooking with wood, coals or heated rocks bridges a gap that is satisfying to those primal instincts.

CAM: What can we expect to see in future episodes? Roger: Humans all over the globe have been cooking with fire for many millennia now, and cultures all over the world have different ways of cooking with fire. I would like to explore extending the borders of the show to feature more places outside of the U.S. CAM: What advice would you offer the average outdoor cook? Roger: Just to enjoy the whole experience. I think the average outdoor cook is a more experienced cook, or else they would be a novice indoor cook. It takes a different level of attention to detail and mindfulness to cook outdoors because you have to deal with many other variables like wind, rain, keeping the fire going, how hot or cool is the fire, what are the hotspots, how much wood/charcoal do I need to add at a particular stage, bugs trying to get you, and all sorts of other things that you simply don’t have to worry about in a modern day North American kitchen with electricity and good shelter. Also, use the smoke as a seasoning advantage. You don’t need to add all kinds of stuff if you start with a freshly caught fish, some salt and a bit of good wood smoke; the work is already done, you just have to make sure you don’t get in the way or don’t burn the darn thing. It’s the magic of simplicity. CAM: How do you select the places that we see on the show? Roger: There is a very dedicated but small team of amazing people who find, research and vet all the potential locations for “Man Fire Food.” The winning candidates have endured hours of interviews and a barrage of questions as exhaustive as possible. The variables are so unimaginable to the viewer, and if we all do our jobs right, you have no idea how much work went into what looks so simple on TV. We’re always interested in looking at unique “Man Fire Food” subject matters. If any of your readers think they qualify, they should email: Contact@rogermooking.com. “Man Fire Food’s” new season premiered Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 9 p.m. on The Cooking Channel.

Feeding Strategies MARK SOSIN What appears obvious may be deceiving. Most anglers erroneously believe that when predators corner a hapless school of baitfish, they simply open their mouths and swim through the prey, gorging themselves in the process. It doesn’t happen that way. A predator must isolate and attack one specific victim at a time. That’s not always an easy task. A frantic school of baitfish sensing predators can appear as a shimmering mass of silver with each individual member of the school constantly changing position. Selecting a tasty morsel to ingest can frustrate even the most sophisticated gamefish. That’s one reason why you’ll find predators lurking under a pod of bait. The instant their intended prey strays from the pack, they strike. When you think about it, you can understand that any gamefish searches for a victim that is isolated, disabled or looks different from the others. Feeding is a tradeoff. Success centers on expending as little energy as possible for the food value received. Unsuccessfully chasing prey for long distances keeps a predator lean, hungry, and tends to slow it down. The easiest way to get a strike when you locate a school of baitfish starts with a cast into the middle of the school. It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing an artificial lure or a natural bait. The retrieve should work your offering toward the fringes of the school in basically the same direction in which the school is swimming or at a 45-degree angle to the basic direction. As your bait or lure eases toward the edge of the school, it is easier for a predator to isolate. And, it looks slightly different than the baitfish in the school. Some live bait fishermen squeeze a minnow before casting

92

it or drifting it so that it will be disabled. Clipping a fin or two also impairs swimming motion. The injured fish will have trouble swimming, and that means it will send out vibrations that attract the attention of predators. These frantic movements to obtain equilibrium frequently trigger the strike. Even during the anticipated feast of locating a school of baitfish, certain factors come into play. As water temperatures drop, a predator will not pursue its prey as fast and as far as it would in warmer water. When you are fishing a chum slick and fish are feeding on the chum, it is much more effective to fish an offering without retrieving it. A dead drift works just fine. I’ve seen that produce inshore and offshore including tuna and sailfish. I once had an opportunity to watch scientists monitor the behavior of a school of bluefish in a massive aquarium as they attacked a school of minnows. By chance, I focused on a minnow that did not move, even when attacked by a bluefish four times. Each time, the bluefish broke off the attack because the minnow did not behave as it should. On the fifth pass, the minnow moved and it was eaten faster than you can read this sentence. Finally, if you are trolling and see a school of small fish on the surface, approach the school slowly so as not to scare them. Ease alongside the school and work the fringes or establish a position ahead of the baitfish. If you prefer to cast, keep the boat away from the school and make the cast into the school. As you retrieve your offering and it begins to clear the fringes of the school, you should get a strike.
