Access weather and fishing data via satellite up to 200 miles from the contiguous U.S. shoreline.

SiriusXM Marine Weather overlays directly on your chartplotter while fishing coastal or offshore waters and provides two vital services for anglers. First, and most importantly, it helps you detect, monitor and avoid bad weather without needing a cell signal. Storms can build quickly at sea, and the numerous, selectable overlay options within the SiriusXM menu lets you tailor the display to your desired level to make sure you and your crew stay safe. In addition to safety, the marine weather overlay can also help you catch more fish. Graphic displays of sea surface temperature contours and wind directions and speeds help you locate tide and current edges, and see where bait fish might be stacked up, giving you a definitive edge when trying to find the bite. With key information needed to find the locations in which fish are most likely to appear, anglers can save time and fuel while fishing.

H E R E I S W H AT T H E P R O S S AY A B O U T S I R I U S X M M A R I N E ’ S S E R V I C E S Rain during a day of offshore fishing is uncomfortable, frustrating and can ruin a trip. We continuously use our SiriusXM Marine Weather to monitor the weather pattern the night before a trip, the morning of, and throughout the day. We’ve been able to track the direction of a storm prior to leaving port and while fishing offshore. The comfort of knowing we can stay ahead of, or just behind, a fast moving storm gives us great peace of mind!

Without question, one of Team Canyon Runner’s most valuable tools is the implementation of SiriusXM’s sea surface temperature overlays on our plotters. For example, we can manipulate the SST data with a range from, say, 68 to 85 degrees. That allows the chart to recalibrate the new 68-degree water temp as blue in color and the 82-degree water temp as red. Seeing a hard, defining break is irreplaceable. It has steered our boats to the fish countless times.

Yesterday was perfect example of why I use SiriusXM satellite weather. I was charter fishing 30 miles NW of Key West knowing a front was coming. Having checked the wind barbs in the front I could see they were 200 miles away moving NW at 30mph. I was able to finish my charter and beat the front home safely and still get a full day of fishing in. Well worth the price of the SiriusXM service.

Product Review COBRA MARINE JUMPACK XL H2O The JumPack XL H2O is Cobra’s most versatile and powerful portable power source and jump starter yet. It enables you to jumpstart your car, truck, RV or marine engine and charge your mobile devices in all weather conditions. It is designed to jump start marine outboards, large V8 gasoline and diesel engines direct-from-the-battery or from the 12V port, and it is compliant with the latest safety UL standard. Most jump starters only work with cables connected to the battery. The JumPack can also jump a battery via the 12V port inside the vehicle, which means the user can stay safely inside the vehicle while the battery charges. The rugged and waterproof design makes it the perfect portable power device for any adventure. This compact unit is lightweight and powerful, with a lithium-cobalt battery that holds a charge longer and is smaller than traditional jump starters. An easy to view tri-color LED indicates the status of the JumPack and when it’s safe to start the vehicle. It runs its own self diagnostics to make sure the cables are attached properly, and if not, the JumPack will not allow itself to be used. This protects the user and the vehicle. Dual 3 Amp USB ports allow for rapid charging of two portable devices simultaneously, and it has a built-in super-bright LED flashlight, strobe and SOS LED. The unit includes jumper cables with clamps, a 12-volt charger cable, AC charge adapter and a neoprene carrying case.

Paired with video-enabled sonar units like Raymarine’s new Axoim Pro or eSeries, an Aqua-Vu underwater camera becomes the ultimate fishfinding machine. Whether it’s under ice or on open water, watching the fish and your lure in real-time takes the excitement of sight fishing to another level. It also gives obvious advantages to the angler. With Aqua-Vu, you’ll know exactly what fish is down there and be able to adjust the presentation to home in on what action triggers the fish to bite. But that’s just the beginning. All anglers know how important water temperature is to finding feeding fish. Probes equipped on the camera reveal water temperature at the depth you’re fishing, which can be markedly different from the temperature at the surface. With that information, it is easier than ever to find the conditions you’re looking for. Aqua-Vu can be plugged directly into a Raymarine sonar unit and viewed on the screen. This sonar, GPS and video combination is a powerful tool to make you a better angler, and they can all be viewed at the same time. Identify structure with sonar, drop a camera down to see exactly what it is and what species are holding on it, and then mark it on the GPS. It can all be achieved on the same unit.

In February, Raymarine partnered with FLIR to bring to market its most advanced marine radar system. Quantum 2, with Doppler target identification, is designed for integration with Raymarine’s awardwinning Axiom multifunction displays to enhance boaters’ situational awareness by intelligently identifying moving and static targets at both long and short ranges. Quantum 2 is tuned to detect moving versus stationary targets. It color codes moving targets to indicate whether they are getting closer (red) or moving away (green). In addition, Quantum 2 brings a new Safety Sector feature that highlights and color codes potentially dangerous static targets within 200 meters in front of the vessel. Advanced users will appreciate Quantum 2’s 25-target mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA). Developed for the United States Coast Guard, Quantum 2’s MARPA feature is doppler-assisted, meaning inbound contacts can be acquired automatically by the radar display to ease navigation in congested waters. Quantum 2 also features CHIRP Pulse Compression technology, which uses compressed radar pulses to display targets like boats, landmarks, rocks and weather cells with unsurpassed resolution and separation. Quantum 2’s flexible design allows for Wi-Fi networking to Raymarine multifunction displays (MFDs) or via traditional wired configuration, making installation much easier and eliminating the need for additional radar cabling or interface boxes.

ACR Electronics is making life easier and safer for boat owners with pre-packed premium boating Survival Kits. Affordably priced and ideal for any boater, the kits include essential products needed to quickly abandon ship and alert the Coast Guard. Boaters carrying one of the bags on-board will be equipped with an ACR Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) operating on the 406 MHz frequency. The beacons can be quickly and easily activated in an emergency to enable responders to identify and locate a boater in distress. The kits also contain a variety of other products including an abandon ship bag, strobe lights, signal mirror and a whistle to further help rescuers. ACR Survival Kits give you peace of mind knowing the safety of your family and crew is ensured beyond the minimum U.S. Coast Guard requirements. When time is short and there is no help in sight, boaters can grab the bag and depend on the kit for a swift rescue.

If you need compact, powerful GPS tracking, AtlasTrax MiniTrax is the system for you. The MiniTrax compact GPS satellite tracking system is only 3” x 2”. It comes battery powered, but can also be hardwired or used with a 12 volt charger. MiniTrax qualifies as a required GPS tracker for insurance companies and provides great mapping features. Alert messages are sent by email or text to notify the user of movement. A messagehandling server gives access to all trips and loved ones can check the exact boat location with the click of a mouse. With several satellite message plans available, you can also see data such as mileage, time length of trips, latitudes and longitudes, headings and speeds. MiniTrax is fully waterproof, has daily battery reports and is ideal for boats, aviation, jet skis, ATVs, RV’s, golf carts, construction and transportation equipment. The new Altasalarm audible/visual system with a 60-foot cable wrap, door hatch and canvas sensor can notify you with a loud siren if someone activates a sensor in the event of attempt theft.

Product Review FURUNO INTRODUCES NEW DUAL TOUCH-SCREEN BLACK BOX OFFERING Furuno set a new standard for touch-screen technology when they introduced NavNet TZtouch2, the first multi-function display (MFD) to utilize edge-swipe technology. In February, they raised the bar on innovative navigation solutions with the introduction of a Black Box NavNet TZtouch2 system, the TZT2BB. This next step in the NavNet series takes the feature set of the award-winning TZtouch2 and packs it into a brand-new black box configuration with dual-display capability. The TZT2BB packs enough processing power to drive two separate touch-screen displays, delivering twice the navigation potential from a single, compact black box unit, for the most technologically advanced all-glass bridge available. TZT2BB can drive two independent monitors such as Furuno’s 17”, 19” or 24” Multi Touch Displays, which allows you to seamlessly move from one screen to the other. It has the capability to handle different monitor resolutions and aspect ratios, which is convenient if you want to utilize existing monitors of different sizes. It also supports full HD video input in HDMI format, for surveillance cameras, sonar or entertainment systems. The TZT2BB operates with the same intuitive Multi Touch interface as the current TZtouch2 MFDs. You can add an optional external keyboard. Customers looking to upgrade from a NavNet 3D Black Box system will be happy to learn that the external TZT2BB keyboard is the same size as their existing keyboard, making it an easy swap, with no cutting. A retrofit kit will be available as an option to convert NavNet 3D’s MFDBB keyboard for use with the new TZT2BB. Similar to the 12.1” and 15.6” NavNet TZtouch2 models, the TZT2BB leverages Furuno’s award-winning network products, including a variety of NXT

and X-Class radars, fishfinders, multi-beam sonar, instruments and other sensors. Radars are available ranging from a compact, 4kW Solid-State Doppler Dome to a super powerful 25kW Open Array. For fishfinders, the TZT2BB includes a built-in dual-frequency Furuno Fish Finder with RezBoost, which creates images 4 to 8 times sharper than a conventional fishfinder. In addition to the built-in Fish Finder, Furuno has impressive add-on options that include the DFF3D Multi-Beam Sonar and DFF1-UHD TruEcho CHIRP Fish Finder. You can both the internal fish finder and the DFF3D Multi-Beam Sonar simultaneously. The unit comes preloaded with raster, vector and fishing charts for the Western Hemisphere in MapMedia’s MM3D format. The U.S. NOAA raster and vector charts are free, while the preloaded Navionics and C-Map charts are available for purchase. Furuno also provides free satellite photography for the U.S. that can be downloaded from their website. As with the TZTL12F and TZTL15F models, tablets and smartphones can be accessed via built-in WiFi, with several free apps available on both Apple and Android platforms, allowing you to remotely view and control your navigation network. Furuno continues to break new ground with their latest Black Box, the TZT2BB. The TZT2BB is perfect for larger helms to display all navigation, radar, fishfinder and instrument sensors across dual displays. For more information on the NavNet TZT2BB, contact Furuno at (360) 8349300 or visit them online at www.FurunoUSA.com.

he gripe came from up on the poling platform, “You won’t see any fish when you’re sitting in the boat blasting Garth Brooks.” Maybe tarpon on this particular stretch of the Florida coast don’t like country music. Or maybe it had something to do with the sound system, which was garbage. Over the wind and waves, the noise rattling from the speakers was barely discernible as music, so we turned it off… and didn’t spot the first fish through an 8-hour day on the water. It’s during slow trips like these when good tunes are most important. The songs become the soundtracks to our adventures. That’s why you owe it to your fishing buddies to have a good sound system on the boat. When it comes to sound quality, there isn’t a company out there better than Miramar, Florida’s JL Audio. Since the mid1970s, when co-founders Lucio Proni and Jim Birch built speakers during summer break from college, the company has grown into one of the most respected audio brands in the world. JL Audio stepped into the marine market in 2005, and in 2016 they introduced the MediaMaster 100 (MM100), which quickly became the high-end source unit of choice for boaters who really care about sound quality. The source unit is where it all starts. It’s the head unit that receives input from your music-playing device and channels it through the amplifiers to the speakers. The source unit is also the dashboard where you control it all. Off the bat, it was apparent JL Audio had designed an exceptional unit, built to stand up to the rigors of sun and salt with all the features expected of a modern sound system. Already known for producing marine amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers of superb quality, JL Audio now had the final piece for a full marine sound system. It was an important step for a brand that values audio quality above all else. “There is nothing else in the marine market like it,” said Alan Wenzel, JL Audio’s VP of business development and strategic planning. “Others may have operating systems with more bells and whistles, but their sound doesn’t come close to ours.” Boaters appreciated the sweet, crisp sound pumping at 4 volts through the RCA jacks. The signal is noticeably clearer than the industry-standard 2-volt output. And the unit’s excellent control flexibility allows for a wide range of zone configurations, which is critical to overcoming the ambient noise of the marine environment. Modern source units are expected to provide connectivity with a host of different devices, and MM100 does this with Bluetooth and USB as well as an analog auxiliary input, so you can even plug in a tape deck and play your old Grateful Dead bootlegs if you want to. The

unit is SiriusXM ready and includes a built-in AM/FM/Weatherband tuner. It is also NMEA 2000 certified, which means it will communicate with compatible multi-function displays from brands like Simrad, Lowrance, Garmin and more. The physical design of the MM100 is what you would expect from a top-of-the-line piece of marine equipment. It looks cool, and it’s intuitive, with a bright, full-color LCD screen and large, backlit controls that are easy to use while in motion. There’s even the option to add remote controls. What JL Audio launched in 2016 remains the best sounding source unit available. A long list of high-quality boat builders jumped on board to install JL Audio systems standard. “The premier brands are the ones we wanted to partner with,” said Wenzel, “especially the ones that are really conscious of the quality of their product.” The MM100 is a high-end unit designed to drive high-end systems for the kind of control, sound and power demanded by audiophiles. And the price point reflects that. Soon after the release of the MM100, Wenzel said customers began asking for a source unit with built-in power and a more mainstream price point. Not everyone needs to hear the triangle ping in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons across the deck of a sport fishing yacht. In response, JL Audio engineers developed the Media Master 50, which becomes available on the retail market this month. By trimming a few of the bells and whistles off the MM100, JL Audio engineers developed a source unit that has all of the sound quality of its top-of-theline unit, but on a smaller scale, perfect for boats that can get by on two sound zones instead of four. With built-in amplifiers capable of producing 100 watts of high-fidelity output, the MM50 is also NMEA certified and compatible with most everything the MM100 is. And like all JL Audio products, accurate sound reproduction was the No. 1 focus in its design. Wenzel said JL Audio would never release anything that doesn’t meet their stringent criteria for sound quality and durability in the marine environment. This attention to quality is what built the JL Audio brand. “Because we are a true audio company, we know a lot about audio reproduction,” he said. “We do everything we can to exceed the standards. We do thousands of hours of listening testing as well as environmental testing before anything is manufactured.” While most audio companies farm out their designs, JL Audio has dozens of electrical and audio engineers on staff. Their marine speakers, assembled at their Miramar headquarters undergo 2,000 hours of salt and UV testing in onsite environmental chambers, which is four times the industry standard of 500 hours. JL Audio caters to boaters who value sound quality in an onboard sound system. With the MM100 and the MM50, the company now offers the source unit to run the highest quality JL Audio sound systems for any size boat or budget. For more information, visit www.jlaudio.com.

L.L.BEAN CAMPSITE ORGANIZER No meal tastes better than one cooked out in the open around a campfire. However, around the campfire definitely isn’t the easiest place to prepare a meal. When you’re tired of using tree stumps to cook on and plastic bins to store all your gear, it’s time to look into the L.L.Bean Campsite Organizer. This portable outdoor organizer features three interior shelves for storing camp kitchen utensils, picnic gear and grilling tools. It’ll keep your gear in order, and the aluminum top doubles as extremely handy counter space. Open, this 31.5”x25”x20” pantry keeps your food and gear organized and out of the way. Folded down to just 25”x20”x4”, it’s easy to pack for the road. The Campsite Organizer is built of aluminum and 600D polyester fabric with heavy-duty hinges, so it’s tough and lightweight. It comes with its own carrying sack, making it extremely portable. Anyone who has ever spent a few nights in the outdoors knows the joys of a well-organized campsite as well as how quickly a campsite can become a jumbled mess. The Campsite Organizer goes a long way toward creating happy campers.

STORMPROOF SWEETFIRE A blazing fire is integral to the camping experience, and in emergency situations the light and heat of a good fire can save your life. The problem is, emergency situations that require a fire usually come with the same conditions that make lighting a fire difficult. With UCO’s new Stormproof Sweetfire, you’ll never be caught without a fire again—regardless of weather conditions. Stormproof Sweetfire is an entirely new take on tinder. UCO took its eco-friendly Sweetfire Strikeable Fire Starter, which is made from a renewable sugarcane waste product called bagasse, and added a proprietary Stormproof tip to create a product that’s totally reliable, whatever the weather. Stormproof Sweetfire’s unique point shapes come connected and ready to break off, and each has an integrated windproof and waterproof match head. An individual point will burn up to seven minutes, which is enough to get a fire started in any conditions. Whether you’re building a campfire to sit around in the evening or if it’s a fire to stave off hypothermia, you’ll be glad to have Stormproof Sweetfire when it’s wet outside.

POPTICALS POP-OUT SUNGLASSES

Good sunglasses are a necessity whenever you’re spending time outside. On the boat or streamside at a campsite, the gritty dampness of the outdoors combined with poor packing and storage options can wreak havoc on expensive, high-quality lenses. Popticals takes packing and storage issues out of the equation with premium quality and stylish shades that fold down to a compact size to fit into a protective case that is small enough to be slipped in a pocket or clipped to just about anything with an attached carabiner. They are the perfect sunglasses for camping because you’ll never have to worry about them being damaged when they’re not on your face. And when packing space is at a premium, Popticals’ small profile and light weight means they’ll be out of the way yet easily accessible. Featuring NYDEF nylon lenses manufactured for Popticals by Carl Zeiss Vision, Popticals are high-perfomance polarized sunglasses. Nylon offers the same clarity of glass but weighs much less, which makes them more comfortable. Backpackers, who are always looking for ways to shave weight, will appreciate how light they are.

W

alter had just returned from 30 days in Worcester, Mass., helping insured residents with their claims from the most recent bomb cyclone that hit the region. He and his fishing partner of 25-plus years, Kathy, a Dwyer High School geometry teacher, decided to go trolling for dolphin. They headed out the Lake Worth Inlet at 7 a.m. due east at 7 to 8 mph, trolling a pair of small, naked single-hooked ballyhoo and a tuna feather in their 2001, 25-foot Target with a Yamaha 250. It was a beautiful day on the water, with calm seas and a small ground swell. They were about 16 miles offshore when Walter saw a bill slap at the bait rigged on a 4/0 Penn Offshore Senator, loaded with 30-lb. Ande high-vis line. A school of bait had passed under the boat just moments before. Walter let the line free spool and then set the hook. The fish sounded and peeled off all but about 50 yards of line. Kathy quickly cleared the other lines and went chasing after the fish, while Walter recovered line. The fish came back up and jumped within 300 yards of the boat – a beautiful marlin! It jumped and thrashed about, then sounded again, stripping the reel of line. This time, phone in hand, Kathy chased down the marlin with Walter cranking on the Penn reel giving the Star Rod Deluxe a workout. They were able to pull up alongside the marlin, snapping a few photos in the water, before the marlin would swim away. The next round, the marlin did a triple jump right off the bow of the boat. As the fish arced the vessel, Kathy quickly snapped off several pictures… of herself. She had accidently switched the view of the camera. The struggle continued for four hours, with the marlin circling to the left—Nascar formation, peeling off line and Walter reeling it back in at least 30 times. As the fish would get close enough to see the white bottom of the Target boat, it would stripe up with markings a foot tall. Walter estimated the tail to be at least 4-feet and the marlin to be 10 to 12 feet in length. Kathy took the fight for a brief 15-20 minutes, giving Walter a break. She held her own with the marlin. They had drifted with the current about 26 miles offshore and north when the marlin made one last pass. Walter reeled the line until the swivel was about 3 feet from the tip of the rod when the knot broke. The marlin swam off with a bit of leader and a circle hook. Walter looked at the Ande line. It had stretched to the point that the color changed, but it never broke. That Feb. 17, 2018 will be a fishing trip the Mulfords, of Palm Beach Gardens, will not forget. CA Florida STAR, the state’s largest family friendly saltwater fishing competition, is back with changes that will make the 2018 event the best ever. This 101-day fishing event, presented by Yamaha, is conducted by Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Florida, the state’s leading organization for marine fisheries conservation, education and advocacy. With more than $500,000 in prizes, the event will run from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. During this timeframe, registered anglers who catch qualifying fish will be eligible for prizes that include a brand new truck or boat, motor and trailer packages to all-terrain vehicles, marine electronics, scholarships and more. Unlike traditional fishing tournaments, STAR focuses on conservation and uses the social media-based event to educate the public on the importance of protecting Florida’s marine resources. The format allows anglers to fish on their own schedule all summer long. A “catch, photo and release” competition, STAR’s smartphone app eliminates the requirement to harvest or capture and transport fish. New details for the 2018 event include: • Kids - Continued free registration for current New Tide Members (CCA members) ages 6 – 17. • Guides - Guides are eligible to compete in their own division for Tagged Redfish and Tagged Dolphin. • Prizes in the Tagged Redfish Division include a Contender 22 Sport, a GMC Sierra, a Pathfinder 2200TRS, a Hewes Redfisher 16, a Carolina Skiff 21 Ultra and Cottonmouth Aluminum Bay/Flats boat, all powered by Yamaha. Prizes for the first two youth anglers in this division include two Carolina Skiff 16JVX CC boats, powered with Yamaha 40 HP motors and trailers. New divisions include: • Tagged Dolphin Division (mahi mahi) - a minimum of 20 tagged dolphin will be released in the state’s waters, with the first registered angler who catches one eligible to win $10,000 in cash or scholarship. • Non-tagged Redfish Division presented by Atlas Jack Plates - even non-tagged redfish are eligible for prizes. • Grouper Division - special prizes for black, gag, red and scamp grouper. • Tarpon Division presented by Humminbird - one winner of a $10,000 prize package will be determined by a random drawing of all catch photos entered in the drawing. Eligibility requirements include proper handling and resuscitation of the catch. Other STAR divisions include: • Youth Scholarship Division presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors - offering over $100,000 in scholarships from Realtree Fishing, Reel Legends Apparel, Southeastern Environmental Solutions, Talk of the Town Restaurant Group and Pasco County Office of Tourism Development. • Power Pole Conservation and Costa Kick Plastic Trash Division - assisting with data collection for potential use in stock and habitat assessment and helping with debris collection. • Lionfish Division - helping with the removal of this invasive species. • Open, Ladies, Fly, Kayak and Professional Guides divisions – targeting various species. Most division winners are determined by a random drawing, a format that encourages participants of all ages to protect and conserve Florida’s fisheries. Register early for an opportunity to win in the weekly Freebie Friday Engel Cooler Drawing! Entry fees are reasonable at $75 for non-CCA members and include a one-year membership. Entry is $40 for current CCA members. For more information on STAR or to register, visit the organization’s Facebook page or ccaflstar.com.

Bring the Heat

By Cory Gurman

S

chool is almost out, and the heat of summer is right around the corner. So what does this mean for catching fish during the summertime? Depending on your target species, you might have to slightly change your techniques to stay on top of the fish. Bass fishing during the summer can be hit and miss sometimes, but their higher metabolism coupled with the shad spawn will likely help you out with catching some nice fish. With so many waterways that hold bass, it doesn’t take much effort to make a quick trip to a nearby pond. South Florida’s Sammy Suarez, 14, started fishing a couple of years ago and has been honing her skills at catching both largemouth and peacock bass out of local canals and golf course ponds.

During the summer months, she and her dad catch really nice fish in the early mornings and late afternoons using a topwater lure like the Rebel Pop R and popping it at a medium speed. The fish in these canals and ponds regularly approach 5 pounds and sometimes exceed that. Another thing that happens during the summer is the increased growth of vegetation, which in turn brings out frogs in big numbers. To match the hatch, I like to throw a Booyah Pad Crasher at any weeds or vegetation I see and start a slow retrieve. When the bass blows up on it, make sure not to set the hook right away. Wait a second to make sure he has it, and bury the hook. There are also plenty of saltwater opportunities in the summer, speckled sea trout being one of my favorites. Finding the right place to fish for them and understanding their preferred hunting grounds is essential in securing a delicious meal. Trout are ambush feeders, which means they like to be still and attack prey as it swims by. Grass, rocks, oyster bars and docks all make for great structure where trout stage, waiting for a meal. The presence of current is important, since it is what pushes baitfish through the structure where trout are lying ready to ambush. If these two elements—current and structure—line up, you are in a good place to fish for trout. Live shrimp under a popping cork, jig heads tipped with a soft plastic and topwater lures are all good choices. Trout tend to bite better on overcast days, especially if you’re using topwater lures. Remember to try and match the hatch with whatever baitfish you are seeing in the area. These fisheries will surely make it worthwhile to get out and soak up some rays this summer, as well as to enjoy a fun family outing during the most relaxing season of the year in the great outdoors. he Stuart Sailfish Club will host a rendezvous to the very popular Rosie’s Place in Grand Cay in the Bahamas. The event will take place June 14-18 and is open to members and non-members. Rosie’s Place, on Grand Cay in the Bahamas, is the perfect fishermen’s destination for those who seek an old-fashioned, quaint fishing and diving community rather than a fancy resort. Grand Cay is a small island situated south of Walkers Cay, just a 4 ½- to 5-hour, 100-mile trip from Stuart. It’s closer than Green Turtle and Marsh Harbour. Rosie’s Place is the favored spot on Grand Cay, providing a small full-service marina and air-conditioned rooms in addition to the great food. We recommend the cracked conch, lobster tail and/or Grouper. Rosie’s Place also offer dockage, water hookup, trash service, electric (30 and 50 amps), restrooms, showers, gas (including diesel), Wi-Fi, ice, nearby hotels and restaurants, groceries and alcohol. Maximum vessel LOA is 50 feet. Directional Course 27° 13’ 10.61” - 78° 19’ 28.85”. Rosie’s Place is holding rooms and slips for the SSC, so early reservations are suggested. Contact the Stuart Sailfish Club Foundation, as a head count is needed as soon as possible. Itinerary for this rendezvous will be available as soon as the club has a solid boat/participant count. For more information about the Stuart Sailfish Club and future tournaments, contact them at sailfish@stuartsailfishclub.com or call (772) 286-9373. Visit www.StuartSailfishClub.com.

he warm summer months are upon us, which means lots of boating, diving and, of course, the annual Abaco Lionfish Derby! Friends of the Environment is calling all fishermen to participate in our annual effort to decrease numbers of this invasive species in our waters. Striving to eliminating an entire fish population may seem strange for an environmental organization, but in The Bahamas’ case, it is crucial for our natural marine ecosystem. The red lionfish, Pterois volitans, is an alien invasive species in our waters. They are not native and have harmful impacts to the ecosystems that they are introduced to. This is of particular concern to island nations like The Bahamas due to our heavy reliance on native species such as the Nassau grouper and snapper in the fishing and tourism industry. Lionfish not only eat a lot of our native species, but also compete

with them for habitat and other resources such as shelter and food. They reproduce abundantly and often, and grow swiftly. The red lionfish, although appealing to the eye, has venomous spines. Research has shown that these spines make it difficult for our native fish to prey on lionfish without hurting themselves, leaving it up to us to help remove this species from our reef ecosystems. Once caught, lionfish can be properly filleted and enjoyed, resembling a fish such as snapper, with a flaky, white texture. This will be the 10th Annual Abaco Lionfish Derby. Since it began, derbies have been hosted in Marsh Harbour and Green Turtle Cay and have resulted in over 9,250 lionfish being removed from Abaco waters. These efforts have supported The Bahamas’ National Lionfish Response Plan and helped to further Friends of the Environment’s goals for marine conservation and education in Abaco. Help us out with this goal by registering for the derby. Prizes will be offered for the boat catching the most fish, as well as the largest and smallest fish. Registration is $125/boat (up to 4 people) and includes: -Lionfish tasting. -Dockside rum punch at weigh-in donated by Brendal’s Dive Center and Water Sports. -Two dinners and four drinks at Green Turtle Club. Important dates: Friday, June 29: 5-7 p.m. captains’ meeting Saturday, June 30: Sunrise-4 p.m. derby (awards and party to follow) For registration information, waiver forms and rules, visit http://www.friendsoftheenvironment.org/page-1/marine-resources/ lionfish/.

fter a nearly three year hiatus, we are excited to be back on the water with a 2001 twenty foot center console. She’s small and needs a little cosmetic work along with some upgrades, but will give us the ability to spend more time fishing which will result in more editorial opportunities, including a series of boat improvement articles. We plan to work with some of our local and regional advertising partners to turn this little gal into a fishing machine while providing exposure for their businesses and quality content for our readers. We will be replacing hatches and latches, reinforcing and powder coating the t-top and leaning post, installing outriggers and adding some rod holders. Also on the list is a new steering wheel, set of trim tabs, new stereo system and combination electronics unit. In addition, we will be doing some minor fiberglass repair and replacing worn out cushions. Each article about our little project boat will include before and after photos and discuss the hows and whys every step of the way. May is one of my favorite times of the year to fish in South Florida. Not only should there be plenty of dolphin and blackfin tuna cruising around offshore, but grouper season opens on May 1st. Action for grouper should be red hot this month as they have not been targeted over the last four months. To get hooked up, drop a live bait or large chunk of bonito to the bottom on one of the many artificial wrecks and reefs that line our coast. May the fish be with you! Keep reelin,

recently got the chance to hook up with good friend Jose Martinez. He invited me out to target big yellow jacks on light spin tackle, possibly getting one on fly among other species in Biscayne Bay. Just after sun up, we poled around looking for bonefish after not seeing any tarpon roll, but the tide had started to change and it was time to look for those big yellow jacks. Equipped with both light and heavy spin tackle, our offerings included live shrimp and crabs, plus a small arsenal of soft plastic baits by Monster3XUSA. We started to find them working the soft plastic shrimps over live bait. I had one take my fly but I wasn't quick enough to strip set, literally seeing my fly spat out. Stupid jelly legs and deer in the headlight syndrome, along with constant man giggles probably didn't help. Soon after, I did manage a jack on fly but it turned out to be the only crevalle in a big school of yellows. Not the target species on fly but my first decent jack on the long rod either way. However, the light tackle spin action with a soft plastic shrimp was the ticket. These big yellow jacks can hit like a ton of bricks and can easily be confused for hooking a freight train. Much like big snook, they will attempt to dump your spool with blistering runs towards structure and hard head shakes. We were on several schools of mostly big yellow jacks for what seemed like an entire tide. The winds picked up and we decided to scout a bit before it got too rough to cross the Bay. During the drive home, we reflected on our day and the fun we had. In fact, we had so much fun we decided to make another quick trip a couple days later. Saturday morning rolled around and we got an early start to beat the weekend warriors. On the water way before sun up, the plan was to hit the big jacks and get back in before the traffic got bad and more risky with inexperienced

boaters. At the first spot we each hooked into something huge and unstoppable on light tackle. Our best guess was tarpon or huge yellow jacks, much like the twenty pounders Jose has landed in the past. The action died soon after and the jack bite was not happening. After putting in some time and making a few bait changes without much luck, we decided to change

pace and work some mangroves for snook and a mixed bag of fun. It turned out to be a great decision as we both worked a new area and found some frisky snook in all sizes, with some big girls in the mix. I lost a slot snook to some old hanging rope dangling off a mangrove. Jose hooked up and landed a solid snook shortly after. The action was great and we stayed at this spot, mapping the area mentally and saw how the tide played her role. We kept working the mangroves rigged with M3X flukes tied weightless, skipping them under hanging branches. We saw many mangrove snapper

coming out to pop our baits but not with much size and nothing out of the norm, until a big reddish blitz came out from the shadows. I thought it was a redfish because of the size and color. Jose initially thought it was a big snook, especially after flushing some hidden ones. This fish came out ten to fifteen yards away from the mangroves, popped my fluke on top and missed. I made a twitch and he adjusted to strike. One more twitch and it was fish on! We quickly realized it was a huge mangrove snapper that took me around the boat once before Jose scooped my personal best shallow water mangrove snapper at twenty four inches. We also caught small black groupers, a yellowtail snapper, mutton snappers, jack crevalles and barracudas. Eight species total, all on Monster3XUSA shrimp or flukes both days. Please visit my website or social media links for more information or to book your South Florida trip in Miami, Florida. Come down for the chance to knock off several bucket list species, from freshwater to inshore and more.

T

he month of May is full of possibilities. Before you head out, you'll need to ask yourself two questions. First, what do you want to target? Second, what type of weather and conditions will you encounter? The list of targets is quite extensive. Offshore, some of the largest mahi of the year will begin to show up. If you’re fishing the edge, you may come across blackfin tuna and smoker kingfish will be quite possible aside from a possible cobia or two. Also, some pretty hefty sailfish will still be hanging around for added excitement. Inshore, some of the largest tarpon of the year will be taking up residence off the beaches, around inlets, and bridges. Lastly, if bottom fishing is your game, you’ll be able to catch (and keep) grouper, along with most varieties of snapper and jacks. As you can see, the possibilities are endless. So how exactly should one prepare? One thing I learned early in my charter fishing career was to expect the unexpected. Sure, I may carry several rods and a lot of extra bait and tackle that I may or may not use but having it on the boat increases my odds of putting fish in the box. On a typical day on the water, I will carry (6) kite fishing

forecastS rods, (4) 20# spinning rods, (24) light spinning rods, (2) heavy bottom rods, and at least one jigging rod. In all, there will be around 16 outfits on the boat and believe it or not, they all get used pretty often. Besides the wide assortment of tackle, I also like to head out with as much live bait as I can hold. Remember that variety is just as important as quantity. Some of my favorite baits include: goggle eyes, blue runners, herring, pilchards, cigar minnows, ballyhoo and pinfish. I break these baits down into three categories: big baits, small baits, and bottom baits. If the wind is blowing, we are kite fishing with 4-6 surface baits. Depending on the type of bait available, I may choose to also fish a flat line or middepth bait. Many trips have been saved by this deep bait. Kingfish, wahoo, bonito, and even sails often fall for it. Another staple is the bottom rod. Just like the mid-depth bait, it too can be a trip saver. Bottom dwellers like mutton snapper, grouper and various types of jacks are suckers for a well presented bottom bait. On flat calm days with little or no current, I prefer to concentrate my efforts on bottom fishing. The best method here depends on current. If we encounter little or no current, I prefer to fish deeper bottom spots in the 180’ to 300’ range. A light to moderate current is perfect for May is prime time for blackfin tuna!

You can never carry too many rods.

anchor fishing wrecks in the 80’ to 130’ range. Again, just like drift fishing you can target both pelagics as well as bottom fish when anchored. Imagine soaking flat lines, bottom baits and kite baits all at once. It is not only possible, but a great way to cash in on all of the opportunities that may arise. If I decide to anchor, I like to put out some chum or bonito chunks to help fire things up. Like with any type of fishing, it is important to network with other area captains and pay close attention to the VHF radio for the latest fishing reports. Knowing what others are catching should give you an idea what you should be targeting. Running and gunning for mahi may not be a great idea if no one has seen or caught any recently. Remember, time on the water is limited, so it is always best to focus on the species that are most likely to cooperate if you're looking to succeed. Lastly, I wanted to let everyone know that I will be conducting a FREE seminar (Topic TBA) on Wednesday, June 6th at 7:00

pm. The seminar will take place at the Miami Bass Pro Shops located at Dolphin Mall. TIP of the Month Tackle Some Tuna! M

ay means tuna to me! Big blackfin tuna cruise along the reef edge searching for an easy meal in May and June. The trick to big catches is chumming. If you can get live pilchards, then the odds are you will catch tuna. However, you will need a lot of pilchards. Anchor or set up a drift in 90 to 180 feet of water. Rig your tackle with 30 pound fluorocarbon leaders and 5/0 to 7/0 VMC light wire circle hooks and set out your spread. Hopefully, you will have enough breeze to fly a couple of kites. Hang live pilchards or flying fish, dead or alive, on your kites. Add flat lines baited with pilchards or small live baits of some kind and finally add a couple of baits with some lead and fish them about 60 feet below the boat. Now start chumming. A couple pilchards every minute will draw blackfin tuna to your boat. If pilchards are scarce, then chum with chunked pieces of sardine, ballyhoo or squid. Keep that chum flowing. If you can’t get live baits, then even small live grunts may draw strikes on the kite baits. On the flat lines you can float back chunks of cut ballyhoo, sardine or herring. Float the chunks back just like when yellowtail fishing. Keep them drifting back. If you stop letting out line retrieve your bait and start over. When you hook up, keep everybody chumming and fishing. Followers are the normal event. Upon boating a tuna, cut its throat or pull a gill raker to bleed them and get the fish under ice. Enjoy the action and the dinner!

This fishery is the driving economic force for thousands of American jobs up and down our coast. Sailfish are a very valuable, renewable resource and should always be treated with the respect they deserve. Imagine running around a quarter mile track, once, as fast as you can. When you get back to the starting line, someone immediately covers your mouth and nose, so you cannot breathe for 15 seconds. What do you think could possibly happen? Stroke, brain damage, cardiac arrest and death would all be on the table. This is what a billfish experiences when you remove it from the water for a picture. Satellite tagging studies and science have taught us that removing a billfish from the water for a picture prior to release can increase the mortality rate significantly. Marine scientists have shown that often times, removed fish that seemingly swim away fine, will die 2 or 3 days after release. It is

our responsibility to take care of this valuable resource and to use all the knowledge we have to release these fish ethically, in the best shape possible and with the best chance for survival. In the Atlantic Ocean, it is illegal to remove any billfish from the water, prior to release. The purpose of releasing these fish is to make sure they can continue to spawn and provide fishing opportunities for future generations. Here are some tips to ensure your next billfish catch has the best chance for survival, while still getting great pictures. Use Circle Hooks: When using live bait or rigged dead bait, always use circle hooks. Circle hooks are designed to prevent gut hooking and to hook fish in the corner of the mouth, where the hook does the least amount of damage. Survival rates have soared since they became the hook of choice among the top tournament billfishermen. Hook up and catch ratio have also greatly increased

GoPro Camera / Selfie Stick: GoPro cameras and accessories for your smart phone enable you to get fantastic pictures and video of that “catch of a lifetime” and still keep your crew and the fish safe. Attach the camera to a long selfie stick and have a designated crew member hold the camera out away from the boat. A GoPro set up also allows you to take pictures of the fish from under the water and of it swimming away upon release. In the water billfish pictures are always better quality and much safer than pictures holding a fish on deck. De-Hooker: If the hook is clearly visible and not too embedded in the fish’s mouth, a long handled de-hooker can be used to remove the hook. Be sure to have the proper sized de-hooker for the hook size and type you are using. Make sure to slide the device all the way down onto the hook. De-hookers that allow you to push and twist the hook out seem to work best. A good de-hooker will also have a small hook on it that allows you to slide a lure up the leader for easy retrieval.

Join TBF and IGFA: Get involved with Billfish conservation and make it your business to be educated on the issues that matter to you, the fishing public. The Billfish Foundation and the International Gamefish Association are both located in South Florida. Both organizations work hard to keep you on the water fishing and to make sure the fish we catch are looked after. Check out www.billfish.org and www.igfa.org to start learning more about these amazing fish and how you can be a positive force in fisheries management.

few extra minutes swimming the fish with its mouth and gills underwater can be the difference between life and death. A large marlin that is extremely tired can take up to 45 minutes to an hour to fully recover. It is also important to hold the fish upright so that it can regain its strength and recover proper blood flow. With smaller species like sailfish, spearfish and white marlin, be extremely conscious of holding the bill. It is very easy to break a bill or cause trauma to the root or area where the bill grows from the fish’s head. Catching and releasing a fish should be as quick as possible. The heavier the tackle, the faster you can catch and release the fish. Touching the fish should be kept to a minimum as not to disturb its protective slime coat. Keep your ego in check and release the right way by always keeping these magnificent creatures wet and in the water where they belong.

PH

Release Knife: The easiest and safest way to release a billfish is to cut the leader without removing the hook or hooks first. A safety release knife can be attached to the end of a tag stick or small gaff so that you can reach the fish without getting to close. Be sure to cut the leader as close to the hook as possible as long trailing leaders will continue to irritate the fish and cause it to continue to panic. This device can also save the life of a leader man if he gets wrapped or tangled in the leader. Always have a safety knife on your person when dealing with heavy leader and large billfish.

M

ay is one of the best months in South Florida for offshore fishing and jigging. The best part of May is the schools of jumbo blackfin tuna that migrate through our waters just offshore. To target blackfin tuna on your kayak, make your way to the deep wrecks from 200-280 feet of water. Try using pink colored jigs and jig around those deep wrecks. Also, blind jigging from 200-300 feet has worked well for me, landing a jumbo or two in the past. Sometimes the blackfin are so thick in May that on certain days I will not even bring live bait with me and will still load the kayak with tuna. If you’re planning on using live bait, try using 30 lb mono with a short piece of wire at the end connected to a 3/0 J-hook and a small stinger. Make sure when you hook the stinger to your goggle eye that there is plenty of slack so the fish can swim naturally. Tuna have very big eyes and you will not get many bites if your baits

are not presented correctly. Even though I will be targeting blackfin tuna in the month of May, I will always catch some monster kings while fishing for them. You can catch some solid 20-30 lb kings in 80-180 feet of water and even jig up a slob 40 pounder off the deep wrecks. When using live bait, I use the same rig as stated above. I have caught my personal best mahi mahi in late May. The

fish weighed over 30 lbs and was caught in only 200 feet of water. This time of year, there will be some small schools of 20+ pounders cruising around in 300350 feet. Make sure you have a pitch rod ready to throw a bait at them. Jigging the deep wrecks in May produces so many different species of awesome fish in our area this time of year. Try getting to the deep wrecks in 200+ feet

for the amberjack bite. If you’re the first one to the wreck, you are sure to get nailed on the first drop with your jig. For me, the best jigs for catching monster amberjacks are the orange tiger striped and the glow in the dark jig. You can also get lucky around the moons and jig up a solid a 40-50 lb wahoo off the same wrecks. For anglers that want to stay in close, the spanish mackerel bite just off the beach by the piers has been on fire. I’ve caught all my mackerel on live pilchards and light tackle. Make sure to use a small stinger just in case. Get ready for the highly anticipated Extreme Kayak Fishing Summer Slam Series in Pompano Beach. WATER

ast month, I wrote about time on the water and how I believe it is a key to becoming a very successful angler. Sounds easy, right? Maybe if that was all you had to do, but here's another key to becoming a top angler... versatility!!! I've watched many of the top anglers here in South Florida do the same thing over and over. A lot of times it works, but if it doesn't, they lack confidence to try other baits or other areas that might call for patterns that they're not comfortable with. I've been there myself on many occasions. How many times have you watched your favorite fishing shows and see the same techniques over and over? When you hear that a certain angler is catching fish, you can almost guess what they are doing, because you know what techniques and patterns they are known for. My suggestion is to challenge yourself. Put away your favorite go to baits and pick up something you've never tried before. Start with the technique that you are least skilled with. Work on fishing your weaknesses and not your strengths. Another trick is to not bring your favorite baits because we all have a tendency to go back to them when the new techniques were trying don't work out the way favorite ones do. Diversify! Take those patterns and techniques you're not comfortable with and marry them, own them and then add them to your arsenal. This will help you to catch them no matter where you are, regardless of the conditions and give you the confidence of changing up game.

This will make you a better and more well rounded angler. Now on to how and where we are catching numbers as well as trophy fish. As the water continues to drop in the Florida Everglades, the fish will need to abandon the flats and move into the canals. This makes the fish easier to target. Now's the time to go after your trophy fish. #1 - Holiday Park: Fishing has been extremely awesome

Ace in green pumpkin, june bug and black is a good bait to throw. For those of you who do not know they have a boat rentals that are very affordable. #3 - Mile Marker 35: All the baits mentioned above are working. Be careful when going around the weirs as they are very shallow right now. #4 - Holey Land: Fish the east canal. That's the largest one and the one holding the most and best quality fish. #5 - Lake Okeechobee: Bass are starting to pull out to the outside edge. Some of the best techniques for the big ones are flipping and pitching creature baits. Swimbaits, swim jigs, spooks, hollow bellied frogs, chatterbaits and spinnerbaits make for excellent search baits. Also keep your eyes peeled for schooling bass on the outside edges. Chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, rattle traps and spooks will keep your rod bent. When you come across improperly discarded fishing line while out fishing, please dispose Capt. Neal wins of it properly. Nature can get 2 day in the tangled up in this line very easily. Bassin Fools Help to keep our shorelines and tournament and Big fish. waters cleaner for generations to come. ig black and gag groupers can be speared in SE Florida waters, but they’re never easy! Experienced spearos call big blacks “carbos,” a commercial fishermen’s term and big gags are often called “rusty bellies” because of the black algae found on their bellies, from years of hiding on dark sandy bottoms. Both species are very smart and even the barely legal 24 inchers take off shortly after spotting a diver. Grouper season runs from May 1 through December 31, so here’s some tips for local divers to increase their chances of stringing up a big one. “The deeper you dive, the bigger the fish,” has been my slogan since beginning spearfishing training and charters decades ago. No question, there are more and larger fish where there is less diver traffic on our deeper wrecks and reefs. So, whether you freedive or scuba dive, taking advanced dive training can get you deeper. In freediving it’s called Level 2 and 3 Certifications and for scuba it’s beyond Advanced Open Water and is called Technical Diving. Fishing pressure is reduced at greater depths as well, because hook and line fishermen, as well as spearos, have much greater difficulty reaching big fish and getting them up off the bottom around large structure. Freedivers are quieter than scuba divers and can approach skittish fish with more stealth. They are also faster which can

Good Times At The Sea Spray Abaco Challenge

F

rom Feb. 7-10, 18 teams gathered on Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas at the Sea Spray Resort and Marina for the Second Annual Sea Spray Abaco Challenge. Hosted by the resort, this tournament is becoming known as one of the most enjoyable in the Bahamas. With prize packages through fifth place, affordable entry and value-added categories, nine radio raffles worth $400 each, team bags and buckets stuffed with goodies and fantastic food and live entertainment, this event is all about having fun. This year’s event raised and donated more than $6,000 to the Hope Town Primary School, Every Child Counts Bahamas and Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association. Wahoo, blackfin and yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi are the target species, with teams eligible to weigh their two biggest fish from each species on each day of the three-day competition. This year Team Crab Eyes took home the overall championship with a cumulative weight of 292.6 pounds. These guys finished second in the inaugural event and were eager to take home the win. In second place was Team Sonny Boy with a total of 134.3 pounds. Sonny Boy also weighed the biggest fish in the Wahoo Category, and at 52.9 pounds took biggest fish overall for the tournament. In third place was Team Perfect Timing with a total of 83.2 pounds. These guys came from out of nowhere on the last day to make it onto the podium. Special congratulations to Team Family Circus, which won the local Bahamian championship with a total of 65.9 pounds. Their name will be inscribed on the residual trophy at the resort and they took home a beautiful black grouper mount by tournament sponsor King Sailfish Release Mounts. UNDER THE SEA

Tricks of the Trade

L

ike land hunters or rod-and-reel fishermen, spearos also study and perfect some tricks of the trade. Spearos immerse themselves into the fishes’ environment, so the first skill to master is to look like you belong there. Beginners tend to exhibit aggressive behavior, chasing and spooking fish. If fish scatter when you get near, study how calmly an experienced diver moves in the water. Until you achieve a non-threatening aura, all other tips and tricks will be useless. After achieving smooth diving technique, here are some techniques to get near fish. 1) Aspetto (Italian for “wait”)—It starts from the surface with a smooth duck-dive into the water while removing the snorkel. You descend with soft kicks until you begin to free-fall as you scan the bottom. By turning your fin blades, you maneuver to the right spot, perhaps where the reef meets sand. You lie motionless on the bottom until curious fish come to check you out. Moving only your eyes, you pick out the prey, move your gun slowly, and make a well-placed shot. A good spearo will make this technique look easy, but it is not. This is especially effective with evasive fish that become curious when you do not move, such as mutton snappers in Florida, stripers in the northeast, and bigeye emperors in Hawaii. 2) Agguato (Italian for “ambush”)–This is a dynamic stalking technique to get closer to prey without being noticed. The diver navigates the bottom using the environment to get closer to the prey. The diver must consider current, visibility and available bottom structure while moving from one object to another, blending into shadows or hiding behind reef formations. If your body can be hidden while closing the gap, the fish will remain unaware of your presence.

CANGL_FIL1-FIL4.indd 4

3) Flashers/ Sheri Daye practices “aspetto” technique. chum—Especially Photo by Joe Marino effective for hunting pelagics such as jacks, tunas, dolphin and wahoo. Multiple mirrors dangle below a float, and the flashes of light in the water imitate the reflective glare from a school of baitfish. The fish come in to investigate. Chum can be used in combination with a flasher to bring them even closer and keep them interested. In addition to these techniques, serious spearos are likely to train in a pool, use meditation techniques, and do cardio exercises to increase their breath hold capacity. Many take freediving classes to increase bottom time and safety. While there is no certification required to do it, classes should be a pre-requisite, as freediving is a sport that can lead to “blackout” and death if not practiced correctly. Spearfishing is a beautiful, selective way to catch fish, but it is also physically and mentally demanding. Above all, be safe and happy hunting! Sheri is a world-record holder, host of Speargun Hunter, and producer of The Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Follow “Sheri Daye” and “The Blue Wild” on Facebook and Instagram.

he Piper’s Angels Foundation has announced its 2018 Crossing For A Cure charity event, a long-distance endurance paddle challenge that raises funds and awareness for cystic fibrosis. The 75-mile adventure from Bimini, Bahamas to Florida’s east coast will take place on Saturday, June 16, and will feature more than 75 paddlers and 25 boats with a combined mission of raising $250,000. The flagship event of Piper’s Angels, a non-profit organization, will start at the Bimini Sands Resort and finish at South Florida’s Lake Worth Pier. This year’s event will feature its first two paddlers with cystic fibrosis. Proceeds help ensure improved quality of life for local patients and their families through Piper’s Angels Foundation programs. Last year’s event featured 34 paddlers, 10 boats and raised $133,000.

“From paddlers to volunteers to boat captains, this is a monumental effort, and it’s amazing to see so many people come together to challenge themselves and each other,” said Piper’s Angels Foundation Executive Director Travis Suit. “I love watching people get excited about this and spreading the positive message of making the most out of circumstances we face.” Piper’s Angels trek across the Gulf Stream was launched in celebration of Suit’s daughter, Piper. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of 4, Suit found hope and inspiration in learning of the healing benefits of saltwater for cystic fibrosis patients. After learning to paddle and surf as a natural and fun way of healing for Piper, his mission expanded in 2013 when he completed his first 75-mile paddle as a personal challenge to raise awareness. This endurance paddle, which also served as a demonstration to Piper of how one can overcome life challenges and face fear, has now evolved into a movement that encompasses the entire cystic fibrosis community. This year’s Crossing For A Cure is made possible by generous title sponsors the Palm Beach Sports Club and Legacy Marine, as well as supporting sponsors Power Design, Tealixir Kombucha, Jupiter Pointe Club & Marina, Endless Summer Rum, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Tropic Sport, Med Lab, Ed Morse Automotive Group, C3 Gardens and Life Hearing & Tinnitus Health Centers. Registration and additional information is available online at https://www.crossingforacure.com. Paddlers must register to participate by May 1 and achieve a minimum fundraising goal of $1,000 each through a personal fundraising webpage. Boaters and captains with Gulf Stream crossing experience are also needed. For more information, go to www.crossingforacure.com and www.pipersangels.org.

oth in and on-water activities are quintessential to Florida living: swimming beachside, snorkeling, paddle boarding and, of course, fishing. Dubbed the “Fishing Capital of the World” and with some of the world’s best game fishing, Florida is an angler’s paradise for locals and tourists alike. However, with more than 1,300 miles of coastline and more than 100 million visitors each year, Florida’s coastal ecosystems and their resident species are under tremendous pressure from human impact. By employing a few simple practices, every angler can help protect what they love and ensure a healthier future for our ocean. 1. Mind your line: Fishing line can pose a serious threat to marine life if it gets loose and becomes marine debris. Designate a container to stow your excess line to keep it from entering the waterways while out on the water. Monofilament recycling containers can be found near most marinas and piers where local recycling program coordinators collect, clean and ship it to be recycled and made into gear such as tackle boxes, spools for line or artificial fish habitats. 2. Hook it up right: Using the proper size and style hook for your target catch can prevent unnecessary bycatch, reducing the chances of injuring a species you did not intend to catch and wasting your bait, time and money. Using circle hooks in lieu of j-hooks can also reduce bycatch by up to 80 percent while also doing less potential damage to fish to be released. 3. Wear dope, polarized shades: When you finally land that perfect catch and you post up for your Instagram picture glory, make sure you are showing off your polarized sunglasses! Wearing polarized lenses helps reduce surface glare and increases visibility into the water column to spot any animals that might otherwise come into contact with your boat. Manatees and sea turtles are just some of the animals that are frequently injured by boat strikes. 4. Support the sport—literally: When practicing catch and release, support the weight of your catch with wet hands instead of lifting it up by the line. A fish left unsupported of its own weight poses serious threat to its gut and mouth, decreasing its chance of survival after release. By supporting the body with wet hands instead, you can safely remove the hook while preserving its essential, slimy protective coating that helps minimize chance of infection. 5. Show ‘much respect’: Each minute, metric tons of trash enter the ocean, and you can help prevent it. Remember to always respect the ocean by not tossing trash overboard and taking special care to secure wrappers, cans and other trash items before they can become debris. As an angler, you are a steward of the ocean and have the power to promote and instill responsible behavior in other anglers. For more tips on ways you can reduce your impact on the ocean, visit myfwc.com/fishing for up-to-date regulations, tips and educational resources.

t’s that time of year again to dust off the rods and reels for the 25th Anniversary Sebastian Exchange Club Foundation’s (SECF) Blue Water Open Charity Offshore Tournament. With such a special anniversary, there will be many surprises. Over the previous 24 years the tournament has raised more than $567,000, all of which has gone back to the community and the causes SECF supports. The Exchange Club is all about the prevention of child abuse

as well as supporting many area youth-oriented services and organizations. A few of these are Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County, Youth Guidance, Shiloh Youth Ranch, CASTLE, Sebastian Soccer, Sebastian River High School Crew, and the list goes on! This year’s tournament will be held again at Capt. Hiram’s Resort on Indian River Drive in Sebastian. On June 1, there will be a captain’s meeting and party, starting with registration at 5 p.m. and the captain’s meeting at 6 p.m. This is a great party and an added benefit to the actual tournament. There will be all kinds of drawings as well as a live auction. We have an awesome shirt designed for this year’s tournament, which will be available for purchase. On Saturday, June 2, fishing starts with lines in at 6 a.m. The weigh in starts at 2 p.m., with a cutoff of 5 p.m. If you haven’t been to one of these exciting events, now is the time. Fishing is predicted to be fantastic this year, and watching fishermen bring in some monster fish is very exciting. They will be vying for a chance to win part of a guaranteed $19,000 purse. The four main-board payouts will be for grouper, kingfish, wahoo and dolphin. Payouts for the four categories are: 1st place-$1,250, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $250; 2nd place-$600, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $150; 3rd place-$400, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $100; 4th place-$250, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $50. Some of the other divisions include Junior and Lady Angler. Along with the main board, there is a $1,000 prize for the largest cobia and amberjack. But wait… there’s more! The William Knapstein Memorial award is an additional $1,000 for the largest grouper. This is donated by his family in his memory. And… there is a bonus board payout of $200, plus a 25th anniversary bonus of $30 for the next 10 places knocked off the main board. So bring the kids, come on out to Capt. Hiram’s June 1-2 for some great fun and a chance to support good causes. For more information, visit www.bluewateropen.com or call Michael Natale at 772-664-0525 or event chair Eva Chapman at 772-783-5822.

verything about the Bahamas holds a special place in my heart. Forty-five years later, whether I am chartering Duchess or guiding my clients on their own boats, I still feel the excitement of seeing the Bahama Bank as if it were for the first time. Introducing new friends or returning old friends back to the islands never gets dull. Docking at Rosie’s Place on Grand Cay, Old Bahama Bay in West End, or Orchid Bay on Guana Cay, I know we will be welcomed by our island friends and enjoy the rich hospitality that each one provides. Everyone knows my favorite fishing is for pelagic fish. It never gets old hearing the squeal of the reel as a wahoo, dolphin, tuna or marlin strikes the lures of my design. I also enjoy shutting down the diesels and drifting over the reef with spinning rods catching grouper and snapper. I enjoy eating our catch when we arrive and also look forward to seeing my local Bahamian friends who dive and fish, come to the dock to sell us lobster and stone crab, in season, and conch. Fresh bread brought to the docks by the local ladies goes perfectly with the huge bowl of conch salad I make every time I am there. My last trip was extremely special, as I had my son Allan, grandson Marlin, and longtime friends the Sultan family on board the Duchess. We arrived in Grand Cay for Homecoming and The Joe Flanigan Memorial Tournament. Big Joe was my mentor and close friend. His family holds the tournament every year in honor of their father, who loved fishing and diving the Abacos. This event allowed me to visit with old friends and generations of Grand Cay residents. I feel fortunate that my life’s direction has taken me to places in the Bahamas that bring me and others I have shared it with so much joy. Capt. Billy Black has been fishing the productive offshore waters of Florida’s Treasure Coast and the northern Bahamas for decades. Over the years, he has nurtured many great relationships with the Bahamas and its people fishing the classic 50 ft. Hatteras Duchess.

ver the years, much has been written about the Western North Carolina trout waters of Brevard, Sylva and Cherokee. And for good reason – each of those areas possesses popular waters regularly stocked by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. One place that has traditionally flown under the radar is Hendersonville. If you’re looking for a new spot to fish in the North Carolina mountains, or simply prefer fishing less-crowded waters, Hendersonville and Henderson County offer a nice supply of stocked and native streams that are not as well-known. North Mills River is the prime trout fishing venue in Henderson County. The river has a 4-mile section of delayed harvest waters that receives an annual infusion of 11,000 trout from N.C. Wildlife. May is a great time to fly fish the delayed harvest waters of North Mills River because no trout have been harvested since Sept. 30, and it’s designated only for artificial, single-hook lures at that time. Beginning at noon the first Saturday in June and running through Sept. 30, the waters are open to all anglers with no bait restrictions, with a creel limit of seven trout per day. Another nice thing about fishing North Mills River is its location. It is part of the North Mills River Recreation Area of the Pisgah National Forest, which offers camping and miles of wild trout waters, along with hiking trails, biking trails and picnic shelters. North Mills River Campground is open year-round with 31 standard sites, plus one site with full hook-up. There are tent pads, fire pits and bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets. The campground is adjacent to the delayed harvest section of North Mills River, and also a short drive from the more well-known Davidson River trout waters near Brevard. Other well-kept secrets for fishing in Henderson County are three streams on the eastern side of the county, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Hendersonville. Rocky Broad River has a 1.2-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters from Rocky River Lane to the Rutherford County line near Chimney Rock, while Cane Creek, near the Fletcher community, has a 1.5-mile stretch of hatchery supported waters. For those who really want an undiscovered gem, there’s an 8-mile stretch of hatchery-supported waters on Clear Creek, which flows through the hills and valleys of Henderson County’s apple orchards in the shadows of Bearwallow Mountain. Of course, many anglers like to fish secluded areas, while sleeping in more comfortable quarters, and there is no shortage of lodging in Hendersonville. Everything from economy to deluxe hotels, from rental cabins to vacation rentals to bed-and-breakfast inns are available in Hendersonville. And when the fishing is done, Hendersonville provides plenty of options for exploring the outdoors, listening to music, sipping craft beverages and enjoying great meals. DuPont State Recreational Forest lies just southwest of Hendersonville. The forest includes more than 10,000 acres of woods and trails for hiking and biking. The most popular attractions within the forest are waterfalls. Triple Falls has a vertical drop of 120 feet with

three distinct cascades. DuPont’s pristine falls and forests attracted film crews from “Last of the Mohicans” and “The Hunger Games.” An awesome view of the Mills River Valley is available from Jump Off Rock, one of the more easily accessible grand views in the North Carolina mountains. Less than 15 minutes from Hendersonville’s Main Street, Jump Off Rock features a small park leading to a granite rock with spectacular panoramic views of the river valley framed by the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, four states—North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee—are visible from this spot. Hendersonville’s music scene thrives with support from its summer concert series. Music on Main Street brings a live band downtown every Friday night from mid-June to mid-August. The concerts take place on the permanent stage in the Visitor Center parking lot. People kick back in lawn chairs as the sun sets. A classic car show is held each evening in conjunction with the concert. Meanwhile, the Rhythm & Brews concert series combines the local beverage scene with live music once a month from May through September. The concerts take place on the third Thursday and include a variety of music, food, beer, wine and cider. A stroll through the pedestrian-friendly downtown, with its wide, winding sidewalks, reveals bear statues painted by local artists. The Bearfootin’ Art Walk begins in May when 20 bears are placed downtown and concludes with a charity auction in October when the bears find their permanent homes. The abundance of orchards makes Henderson County an ideal location for the emerging hard cider market. Three cideries now operate in the county: Flat Rock Ciderworks on Main Street, Bold Rock Hard Cider in Mills River and Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders in a 1940s-era barn-turned-cidery. The Cheers! Trail brings together cideries, wineries and breweries for a countywide tasting experience. Two vineyards produce high-quality wines from European varietals. Burntshirt Vineyards also makes an apple wine. Sierra Nevada’s new state-of-the-art brewery and taproom is a mecca for craft-beer aficionados. Downtown Hendersonville boasts 25 independent restaurants, and several of them offer alfresco dining on the sidewalks. Never Blue, a tapas-style restaurant with worldly flavors, rolls up its garagedoor front on pleasant evenings. Diners enjoy small plate delicacies, creative tacos and decadent desserts. Postero, another Main Street standout, presents New American fare that is both familiar, yet innovative. The chicken and waffles dish is garnished with foie gras maple syrup, and kimchi rémoulade tops the lunchtime burger. The menu changes seasonally and showcases local ingredients. Another downtown hot spot is Mezzaluna, specializing in wood-fired pizzas and homemade pastas. Mezzaluna has a chefdriven menu with Italian influences complemented by a craft beer lineup that is heavy on local labels. Just up the street, Umi serves fresh sushi and sashimi, and several bento boxes for those who want to try a little of everything. ho doesn’t have a smile on their face when they’re spending time on the water? You can’t help yourself. Boating is the definition of getting away from it all. And getting away from it all is always more fun with friends. This is where the United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club comes in. Enjoying your time on the water with family and friends starts with being safe and responsible while having fun. That’s what makes America’s Boating Club different than most boating organizations. For over a hundred years, the organization’s focus has been on providing unsurpassed boating safety education. But the organization’s leadership and members are passionate about a membership that doesn’t end on Sunday and doesn’t care if the calendar says it’s winter. It’s about being together and building a community through a variety of events like parties, meetings and even just getting together for no reason at all. Driven by this passion, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club, the country’s largest nonprofit boating organization, just launched its new logo. This is the first of several planned updates in the organization’s new brand image and identity. Changes to the organization’s website, social media platforms and collateral are expected in the coming weeks. “We are United States Power Squadrons, but we are also America’s Boating Club,” said Gary Cheney, chief commander, United States Power Squadrons. “This is not just a name change, it describes what we do. We go boating and have fun doing it. Our squadrons are social clubs as well as providers of high quality boating education – allowing members to enjoy the sport and camaraderie of boating and any number of activities that keep us together. Togetherness is what this lifestyle is all about. We joined the organization for the boating education, but we stayed for the friends.”

Offering classes For Boaters, By Boaters in boat handling, navigation, boat maintenance, weather and related subjects, United States Power Squadrons – America’s Boating Club serves as a virtual “yacht club” with boating and social activities for all types of recreational boaters. With over 27,000 members organized into 356 local clubs across the country, America’s Boating Club is comprised of families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. Members are vital to strengthening the communities they live in and know it’s important to live their values by giving back through public service and volunteer opportunities. Members provide courtesy vessel safety checks, help the NOAA’s National Ocean Service keep nautical charts accurate and organize beach cleanups. “Our commitment is to continue learning, teaching, laughing and helping our fellow members enjoy boating,” continued Cheney. “Whether you’re passionate about cruising, racing, making new friends, volunteering in your community or learning from experienced boaters, your local squadron has the resources you need to engage your passions and, perhaps, instill some new ones.” In February of 2017, the United States Power Squadrons announced its America’s Boating Club co-brand to its squadrons, following an almost yearlong re-naming exercise. Popticals Are Performance Glasses

Without The Hassle

For any outdoor adventure—whether it’s hiking, fishing or camping—you need high-performance sunglasses. No matter if it’s a day hike or a multi-day camping trip, sports sunglasses keep your eyes safe when you’re outside and enhance your vision to make your experience even better. The problem is, there’s nowhere to keep your sunglasses when it’s time to take them off. Cases are too big and take up valuable pack space. They’re big and bulky in your pocket, if they even fit there. Most resort to hanging expensive glasses on a strap around their necks or

perching them on their heads. That’s no way to treat a valuable piece of equipment. Without protection, your sunglasses end up scratched, lost or broken, and you didn’t just hike into the backcountry to view breathtaking vistas through scratched lenses. Popticals are the solution to this dilemma. They are good-looking, high-performance, polarized sports sunglasses that fold down to a small profile and fit in a portable, durable case. Popticals feature the patented FL2 Micro-Rail System, which is a breakthrough design that allows for folding sunglasses that are sturdy and hold up to rugged use. The case is less than half the size of cases for most comparable high-performance sunglasses. Slip it into your pocket, where it is unobtrusive. Throw it in your backpack without having to worry about damage to your frames or lenses. Or clip it with the attached carabiner to the outside of your gear, where your shades will be safe but easily accessible. In addition to taking up less space when stored, Popticals are also lightweight. With NYDEF nylon lenses manufactured for Popticals by Carl Zeiss Vision, they weigh significantly less than glasses with glass lenses without sacrificing on clarity or performance. Popticals feature high-quality polarized lenses but weigh less, which makes them more comfortable on your face for all-day wear. For backpackers, it also cuts down on the load your shoulders will be hauling. “Pack Small. Live Big” is a motto Popticals has adopted. The idea is that your gear should enhance your experience, not weigh down or inconvenience you. With Popticals, you’ll have clearer, better vision for your adventure. And when you don’t have them on, you won’t have to worry about them being lost, scratched or broken. For more on Popticals and to see all of their sunglasses, go to www. popticals.com.

SEE MORE. CATCH MORE. PopH2O with NYDEF™ lens technology lets you see sharper details beneath the surface of the water to catch the fish your buddies can’t even see. Polarized NYDEF™ nylon lenses made by Carl Zeiss enhance your vision with the clarity of a glass lens at a fraction of the weight. Spend less time guessing at what you’re seeing in the water, and more time catching fish. #SeeMoreFishCatchMoreFish

The Ultimate Fish Attractor!

The BoJo Fishlight is no ordinary fishlight. The unique design feeds your fish by knocking bugs into the water… still alive! The unit has two fluorescent bulbs that attract bugs. Once bugs come to the light, an electric motor with weed eater-cord blades knocks bugs into the water where fish eat them all night long. The Bo-Jo Fishlight works great on fresh or saltwater, on ocean docks, large lakes and small ponds. Bugs come to the light, bugs get knocked in the water, baitfish feed on bugs, big fish feed on baitfish, and you catch the big fish! The device is simple to install. The durable docklights also give you illumination to enjoy nighttime activities and costs less than a nickel a night to operate. Compared with the cost of mechanical feeders, the device will pay for itself in the first year. For more information and to watch a video, see the website or scan the barcode. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT Road Shower THE SOLAR SHOWER OF THE FUTURE IS HERE!

Running water is nice to have when you’re on the road to adventure, but many times it is awfully hard to find. The Road Shower is like adding plumbing to the rack of your vehicle. It gives outdoors enthusiasts easy access to hot or cold pressurized water wherever the road takes them. It’s simple; mount The Road Shower to the roof rack, fill the tank with water and let the sun do the rest. With a handy temperature gauge, it’s easy to watch the progress as solar power heats the water inside at a rate of 12 to 20 degrees per hour on a sunny day. By the time you return from a trail ride or day of fishing, there could be water hotter than 100 degrees waiting for you to take a shower. But cleaning your body is just one use for this handy invention. Hot water makes cleaning the camp dishes a breeze. Good water pressure is invaluable for rinsing down muddy kayaks, boards, bikes, boots or pets. And The Road Shower can be used for drinking water as well. The Road Shower is available in 4-, 7-, or 10-gallon models. It is constructed of powder-coated aluminum with very few extra parts, so it is extremely durable and built to last a lifetime. The unit can be pressurized automatically while filling it with a garden hose, and pressurization can also be achieved with a bike pump or other inflation tools where there is no hose available.

Bluefin A State Record

A

n 877-pound bluefin tuna was caught off Oregon Inlet, N.C. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries recently certified it as a new state record. Retired Army Gen. Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the huge fish while fishing aboard Capt. Dennis Endee’s A-Salt Weapon out of Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo, N.C. Chambers battled the fish for 2 ½ hours on 130-pound test line with a Shimano 130 rod and reel. The fish measured nearly 9 ½ feet curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail), and it had a girth of 79 inches. Regulations dictate that trophy bluefin tuna longer than 73 inches must be released in the Atlantic south of Great Egg Inlet, N.J. after 11:30 p.m. on March 17, 2018. Chambers was hours from having to release his state record catch when it ate a trolled dead bait. Coming in just under the wire, Chambers’ fish crushed the previous recreational state record by 72 pounds. That 805-pound fish was caught in 2011. The all-tackle world record was caught off Nova Scotia in 1979. It weighed 1,496 pounds. Bluefin tuna much larger than this new state record are known to come from North Carolina waters. According to The Outer Banks Voice, a bluefin heavier than 1,000 pounds was caught this winter, but it was sold to a dealer and was not eligible for the record.
