very year in Basel, Switzerland, the world’s best-known luxury watchmakers gather to display their new timepieces. It’s a great event for spotting timepieces that standout–– in performance and in personality. We saw one impossible to ignore: a precision dive watch with an arresting green dial. But we also saw the five-figure price tag and knew we could bring our customers that exact same precision and stand out appeal for a whole lot less. The Stauer Evergreen Diver is that timepiece. Built like a submersible battleship with a stainless steel case, caseback, and band, the Evergreen Diver is water-resistant down to 660 feet or 20 atmospheres, a feat facilitated by a hardened crystal and screw-down crown.
“Whether you’re looking for something to wear in the ocean, the office, and everywhere in between, a diver’s watch is for you.”
Green On Your Wrist AND In Your Pocket. You could pay an awful lot elsewhere for this verdant virtuoso, but the majority of the cost is in the big designer name upcharge. We think those guys are all wet. This is how you own a top-of-the-line dive watch without helping pay for some marketing guy’s yacht.

inter fishing in the Florida Keys can be a double-edged sword. This time of year can be limited by more frequent windy days. However, some of our best fishing occurs very close to land this time of year, and you don’t have to go far to get into the heart of it. Snapper are always a viable option on the reef, and targeting them also provides the opportunity to fill up the livewell with fresh ballyhoo to use for sailfish, which will be showering bait under diving frigates. If you happen to get out there on a sporty day, and the thought of rocking on anchor first thing in the morning makes your stomach turn, wahoo might be a better option. Trolling lures can be productive for targeting wahoo, and reduces the rocking of the boat that causes seasickness. Utilizing deep-diving lures, planers and trolling sinkers, there are countless ways to set up an efficient wahoo spread that can be pulled at varying speeds. Since wahoo like their baits moving quickly, high-speed trolling is a great way to target them while lessening other species as bycatch. Another great option for wahoo fishing is using live bait. This method is more exciting, and uses bait that can be acquired without dropping anchor. With wahoo rigs already set with wire leaders, and extra prerigged leaders on hand, head out to the wrecks to catch fresh bait. When targeting bigger baits like bonita, blue runners and goggle eyes for wahoo, use a heavier rod and reel, with the appropriately overpowered sabiki rig. Accounting for tangles, breakoffs and unwanted mackerel attention, make sure to have more than a few extra sabiki rigs on board. Affix a weight to the sabiki and drop it down to fill the well with blue runners, or troll the sabiki over schools of bonita, hooking them immediately to the wahoo rig and sending them back out. Power drift or bump troll a spread of live baits with some weightless, flatlined on the surface, or even under a kite, and others at varying depths with a breakaway weight or downrigger. Watching a hungry wahoo skyrocket on a surface bait provides all the adrenaline needed to knock any lingering seasickness out of you. Wahoo are excellent table fare, and they are also one of the best fighting fish you can target. Keep in mind that if your line goes slack, they might be swimming toward the boat. It is a wahoo until it’s not a wahoo, so keep reeling until you see the end of your line. Charter fishing in the Florida Keys is busy during the winter, so make sure to book your charter in advance. Sweet E’nuf Charters offers gift certificates for all the Santas out there with fishermen in the family. Capt. Quinlyn Haddon, of Sweet E’nuf Charters, operates out of Marathon, Florida Keys. troll up WINTERTIME SLAB CRAPPIE C
By Nick Carter
old water makes catching fish more difficult, right? Not with crappie, according to allaround outdoorswoman Terrie Huffmaster. She looks forward to deep winter, when she can load the boat with the biggest slabs of the year. Huffmaster is a South Georgia farm girl from Quitman, way down on the Florida border, so she calls crappie speckled perch, or specks for short. “You catch the bigger specks in wintertime,” she said. “I like to go into the deeper water trolling for them.” A great thing about crappie is they’re predictable. In spring they move shallow to spawn, but throughout the rest of the year they are nomads in search of comfortable water temperatures. You’ll always find them near structure or cover, and they are usually schooled up tightly. Huffmaster fishes for specks on Lake
Seminole, a nearly 40,000-acre impoundment that straddles the Georgia/Florida border. It’s a relatively shallow lake, full of stumps, brush and submerged grass. When Huffmaster says “deeper water,” she means the deepest water Seminole has, which is 25 to 30 feet. Trolling delivers both quality and quantity when water temps are in the mid to high 50s. But Huffmaster isn’t looking for a 30-fish limit. She’s hunting 10 or so giant specks in the 15- to 18inch range. She catches a lot of smaller fish in the process, but she throws those back. “When you get on ’em good, it’s crazy how
many you can catch,” she said. This is how she gets on them: Huffmaster has a line she trolls that she’s identified on electronics and with previous success. It’s just outside a channel marker, where there’s a ton of submerged trees, stumps and other brush and debris to hold fish. She pulls jigs over deep water and up over humps and ledges that rise to as little as 5 feet. “You keep that trolling motor on low,” she said, “just enough where your line’s pulling, where you’re barely trolling.” Huffmaster said there’s no need to deploy huge spreads from a bank of rod holders. She fishes just one, maybe two rods at a time. Her favorites are a lightweight Mr. Crappie Slab Shaker combo and a Lew’s 6-foot Ultra Light with a Lazer Light Speed Spin 75 reel. She spools up with 8-to 10-pound braided main line and uses a 4- or 6-pound fluorocarbon leader tied to a 1/16-ounce Crappie Magnet Fin Spin or a Mr. Crappie jig head. Paddletail and curly tail bodies both have their place. Chartreuse/pearl and pumpkin are good colors. She trolls her jigs 10 to 15 feet behind the boat and keeps a loose drag so the hook doesn’t tear out of a crappie’s paper-thin mouth. “Call me old fashioned, but that’s how we do it,” she said. “And we don’t seem to have any problem catching a mess of them… and some big ones. Which Would You Change First? By Capt. Michael Okruhlik
C
hange is inevitable. In all aspects of life, change is necessary. This is especially true for anglers. When things are not going right, we immediately think of the next lure to throw. We all embark on our fishing journeys with a plan before hitting the water. We may base it on predicted conditions, time of year, experience, or possibly, but hopefully not, a social media post. Let’s discuss what I would do when plan-A doesn’t produce as envisioned. Imagine we are in the perfect looking spot, conditions are exactly as planned, active bait is visible in the area, the tide is flowing, but nothing is biting. Most of us would make a change, and I think we are all in agreement that our first correction would not be to move with everything looking right. Now, here is where I feel most people will make a mistake. Let’s say we are throwing soft-plastic paddletails. What is the first thing you would change?
PHOTO COURTESY OF KNOCKIN TAIL LURES®.
SIZE OR COLOR:
I bet you said color. Am I right? During my decades of fishing the salty bays and marsh, I’ve found that color is the last thing I should change. If some bass fishermen are reading this article, I am solely basing this theory on saltwater for trout, redfish and flounder. It’s not your fault that you tend to change color first. Let’s face it, color is the first thing someone mentions when they describe the lure they used, and when we walk into the tackle aisle there are significantly more colors than lure choices or sizes. We are bombarded with so many colors. Color must be the key to catching, right? Well, maybe not, most of the time. I’ll use my lure brand for an example. I produce 34 unique colors, but I only produce three different sized paddletails. Having all these color options at our fingertips can be overwhelming, and hearing others focus on the color that landed
the big one has caused fishermen to focus on color first. I have found more success in changing the size of the lure over the color. The fish are typically not feeding on anything that resembles the color we are throwing, but they are feeding on a specific size that we have in our box. Matching the forage size is the better option. If that doesn’t produce a bite, then I will even switch the style of lure before the color in most situations. Ultra-clear water is an exception, and these conditions play by different rules. We can cover that in another article, but until then focus less on color and more on size and action. Take a kid fishing and enjoy the outdoors. Capt. Michael Okruhlik is the inventor of Knockin Tail Lures®, and the owner of www.MyCoastOutdoors.com.

GTECHNIQ:
Wax on Boats is Old Tech
C
an you wax your 17’ to 20’ boat inside and out in 30 minutes or less? I can tell you first-hand that it is possible, but to do it you’ve got to forget about wax and get with the times. Gtechniq’s ceramic coatings are the technologically advanced way to get great results with less time and effort. I tested it on an 11-year-old Key West 1720, and this author will never go back to wax. Wax is old technology. Do you have a rotary phone? Do you use a pager? What about a flip phone? We have new technologies available. Once
you learn of a new spray-on coating that provides three months of shine and UV protection, would you still wax-on/wax-off? With a $20 bottle of Rinse-on Ceramic, you can get shiny results in 30 minutes! First you need to start with a very clean boat. Remove stains and buff out the dull surfaces, then follow with a good scrubbing with bleach in soapy water to remove all previous wax if any is still present. Hook up the spray nozzle in the Gtechniq Rinse-on Ceramic kit to the water hose and screw on a bottle of Rinse-on. The red knob adjusts material flow and it’s recommended to run it wide open. All you do is rinse the boat with water, and then turn on the material flow to apply the ceramic coating. You’ll see a slight sudsy effect letting you know material is being applied. Rinse boat inside and out with material flow open all the way. After the first application, you will want to wipe the boat down with microfiber towels. That’s it! Spray down the cleaned boat and wipe off in 30 minutes or less! Plus, there is an added benefit: you get a thin UV coating on all your hardware, lighting, switches, console gauges and expensive electronics. Wax is now a cuss word to this author. Application is quick and easy, but what about the results? Three months and 10 trips in saltwater later, and you can still feel the coating. What about a slippery deck? Nope. The stippled deck on the Key West is not slippery after application. It is ready for another application, yet the only part of the boat that doesn’t look new and shiny is the area under waterline. Beneath the waterline did stay clean for two months, but now it has slight yellowing. This 11-year-old vessel needs a light buff under the waterline. The coating is still there, and water beads/sheets off, but stains are caught in the tiny pores evidenced by the dull appearance. This stuff is pretty amazing, and this author will never waxon/wax-off again! GTECHNIQ.COM

HUTCH TOUCH
Living on the Edge by Captain Greg Hutchisson, Contributing Writer
T
his is the time of year that most offshore enthusiasts are waiting for! When the first cold front hits the North East coast of the United States, all pelagics will start migrating South for the winter. Along with them will come an abundance of bait fish. This is when you want to start fishing “The Edge.” You can expect a variety of species to start pushing into shallow waters, moving South, in search of warmer temperatures in giant schools of bait. It is not uncommon to catch sailfish, mahi, tuna, king mackerel and wahoo all in one day when the conditions are right. Fishing right before a cold front and just after a cold front can be epic. Now, pinpointing exactly when those fish will turn on or turn off can be tricky. Nobody can predict the exact time barometric pressure will rise or fall. Bottom line is, “You Don’t Know Unless You Go.” Typically, in South Florida, if the wind is out of a Westerly direction, the pelagic fish seem to shut down. But the moment that wind shifts out of the North or Northeast it is Game-On!! We literally started our morning off with a West wind and little to no action, followed by a sudden switch out of the North, and in the first hour had every fish in the book chewing their faces off. Unfortunately for smaller vessels, this isn’t ideal conditions. A North / Northeast wind at 15 to 25 knots can produce some heavy seas. However, this is when the bite can really turn on. Trolling dead baits or lures can be very productive. Fishing live bait is definitely the number one choice for most anglers this time of year. We refer to “The Edge” as the first significant drop off, anywhere from 80 feet of water down to 250-300 feet. Within that depth range, you will often find a current edge or “Rip” as some may call it. Rips will hold sargassum weed and debris. A great place for bait fish to congregate and hide. Predator fish will hunt up and down the rip looking for an easy meal. Most of the time you’ll find that the offshore side of an edge will be cleaner, bluer water. We like fishing the clean side to avoid our baits getting hung up in weeds, and the water always looks a lot fishier. More often than not, we have been set up on the clean side, watching big bait showers inshore of us on what we call the dirty side. Don’t neglect it. If that’s where they’re at, make a move. Always keep an eye out for surface action. There are different methods to fishing live baits. One of the most popular methods these days is Kite Fishing. If you are not familiar with this, there are plenty of introduction videos on the internet to get you started. A good day of Kite Fishing has changed many lives over the years. But you do not need kites to go out and catch fish. Before kites, we would slow troll, or bump troll live bait to catch plenty of sailfish and meat fish. If you can handle the wave action, drifting live bait can be very productive as well. Remember to start up-wind and plan your drift accordingly. Whether we are kite fishing, slow trolling, or drifting, we always find a way to send a bottom rod down. You’re liable to catch a nice mutton snapper, grouper, king mackerel, amber jack or cobia doing so. Goggle eyes, threadfin herring or big pilchards are all excellent offshore baits. Our gear usually consists of 20-30 # tackle, 40-60 # leaders and 5/0-6/0 circle hooks. If there are mackerel in the equation, add a short piece of #2 or #3 tooth proof wire to your mono leader. Keep an eye on the weather and be ready for the next cold front. With every front, more and more fish are heading our way. Tight lines and Good Luck!! Freshwater fishing in by Captain Mike Tojdowski
Miami
F
ishing in South Florida during the month of December is delightful. While Miami is famous for its saltwater sport fishing, it also offers fantastic freshwater options for those looking to cast their lines away from the coast. This time of year, the weather is mild and comfortable, making it a great time to explore the freshwater fishing scene in the Magic City. Urban canals, lakes, and ponds provide diverse opportunities to catch exciting species, from peacock and largemouth bass to exotic fish, like clown knifefish and colorful cichlids. As always, remember to check local fishing regulations, obtain the necessary permits, and practice responsible catch-and-release to ensure the sustainability of these urban and suburban fishing hotspots. The Peacock Bass is one of the primary reasons tourists visit Miami to freshwater fish. Peacocks are an exotic and brilliantly colored species, that can be found in the urban canals and lakes of Miami and its surrounding areas. Peacock bass are known for their ferocious strikes and fight and to catch them, try live shiners, crankbaits, and even jerk baits. Live bait, like shiners or small fish, can be deadly. Drift or slow troll these baits near structure or along canal edges. Medium-diving crankbaits in bright, flashy colors can also provoke aggressive peacock behavior. Spinners with vibrant skirts and flashy blades can mimic typical prey and trigger hard strikes. Suspended jerk baits can also work well, especially when fish are holding in deeper water. Clown knifefish are new to the scene, but man are they fun to catch! These bizarrelooking fish inhabit freshwater canals and lakes, often near bridge pilings. They are primarily nocturnal feeders so to target them, consider night fishing. Fish for Clown’s after dark, using live bait like shiners or bluegills. They’re known to gather around lights, making it easier to locate them. Clown knifefish can grow quite large, so use heavier tackle to handle their size and strength. Oscars, a brightly colored cichlid species, have established populations in South Florida canals and waterways. Oscars are opportunistic feeders. To catch them, use small pieces of worm, bread, or small bits of shrimp on a hook beneath a small float. Light tackle is key since Oscars aren’t typically large, and this will ensure a fantastic fight. Another Cichlid to target is the Mayan Cichlid. Mayan cichlids are another non-native species that have made their home in South Florida’s freshwater systems. Mayan cichlids are usually found near the shallows. These fish can put up one heck of a fight and offer a unique photo that will surely go on your wall. These fish prefer offerings such as small live baits like worms, crickets, or small minnows. Throwing one of these delicious baits will surely entice them to bite. A light spinning outfit with 4-6 lb. test line is ideal for targeting mayan cichlids. Miami may be renowned for its stunning beaches and saltwater fishing opportunities but hidden amidst a bustling city life lies a freshwater fishing paradise waiting to be explored. While the rest of the country may be bundling up against the winter chill, Miami enjoys a balmy December climate, making it the perfect destination for anglers seeking freshwater adventure. FLAMINGO by NestorAlvisa
A
s we move into December, we get into our wintertime pattern. I’ll transition over to Flamingo more with my clients during this time of the year. On most days, we’ll fish channels, deeper creeks and points that’ll have tidal flow on them. When our water temperatures drop because of a cold front, most species like snook, redfish, trout, black drum, sheepshead, and tarpon will look to move into deeper water. The channels and creeks will provide a warmer environment for these fish. These fish will stage out on points and current pools where they can just stay warm and feed. A simple live or dead shrimp or artificial shrimp, worked slow on the bottom will do the trick. Your jig head weight will vary depending on depth and current. The key to this is you want to be on the bottom and work your bait on the bottom. Nestor Alvisa HookedOnFlamingo.com @hooked_on_flamingo_charters

GROUPER! D
by Capt. Abie Raymond
ecember brings chilly cold fronts. If you play your cards right, December brings chilly grouper filets. Black, Red and Gag groupers traverse the coast of Florida and end up down here on our Miami wrecks and reefs just in time for season to close, UNLESS you get out there when everyone is Christmas shopping. This is the best time for open-season Miami grouper fishing. Catch or buy live pinfish and big pilchards or herring. Buying them from a local bait boat will give you more fishing time. Look for them to be on wrecks and reefs from 90 to 250 feet of water. Anchor or set up a drift up current of the wreck. If You’re drifting, start your drift a couple hundred yards up current of the bottom-structure and fish your line with enough weight to hold an angle that is straight up and down until you are at least a couple hundred yards past the structure. If anchoring, anchor your boat 100 Ft up current of the structure. Fish a 50 lb. conventional setup with a stout rod. Fish 80 lb. braid mainline. Terminal tackle: tie a spider hitch loop in the terminal end of mainline. Then connect a three-way swivel with a uni knot. Tie a 4 foot dropper loop on the second swivel eye with appropriate bank sinker to hold bottom. Finally, tie an 80 lb. 30 foot fluorocarbon leader to a heavy wire circle hook with a perfection loop. Choose your hook size to match your bait size appropriately. Fish your sinker 4 cranks off the bottom. Keep it there. Hold on tight. Expect to fish the heaviest drag possible. You should have opportunities at all the grouper, plus african pompano, cobia, snapper, jacks and more. Good Luck and GO HARD Captain Abie Raymond 305.775.5197 • @abie_raymond www.gohardfishing.com

ell, fishing my way from Morehead City, North Carolina to Miami has been a full gambit of good fishing and bad. I fished in Little River, South Carolina with Buddy Smith of Capt. Smiley Charters. We fished in 30 knot winds and steady rain, but, we had good action on redfish on double Vudu shrimp. Don’t forget to add Pro-Cure to your baits. I next fished with Leon Dana. It was a very slow bite, but we did catch a redfish and a sea trout. Leon has always put us on lots of fish, but all his efforts fell on not hungry fish this time. My next stop was Haulin Bass Guide Service. They have really nice rental rooms, airboat and bass boat guide trips in Headwaters, Stick Marsh and 3 Corners. We caught loads of bass up to 6 pounds on shiners and artificial. A couple of big bowfins really got everybody excited with their tough fights. I spent a couple days spending money at Harry Goodes Outfitters’ sidewalk sale. Rods, lures and equipment really bruised my credit cards. I fished around Sebastian Inlet a few hours with an old friend and we caught some nice trout and jacks. Moving down to Miami the fishing stayed great. I fished with Leo Lombera of Fetched Up Charters one day. My goal was a black drum. We got it and several tarpon, a few jacks and a sheepshead. I followed that up with a couple days with Abie Raymond owner of Go Hard Charters and an old friend Blakely Smith. We had several tarpon, loads of peacock bass, a clown knife fish and a couple jack crevalles. Who knows what adventure is next? Now, about those December fishing opportunities. It’s your last chance for black groupers til May. The grouper season ends December 31st. But, this month the black grouper should be biting. We like trolling in 15-35 with ballyhoo behind a planer or big lead. or hitting the wrecks with live bait. Mutton snappers move onto very shallow waters in the winter. Anchor near a shallow coral head and chum up ballyhoo. Then cast out a live one behind the boat and try a large chunk of ballyhoo on another line. Mutton snapper, cobia, cero mackerel, and groupers can show up any time. Offshore there will still be a few mahi on the reef chasing ballyhoo or just off the edge chasing flying fish. Live baits under the kite should keep you busy with mahi and sailfish. If we get nice weather, Then it’s prime swordfish time. Please don’t overlook the rigged squid for this job. With some spanish mackerel showing up in October this year, maybe we will see spanish mackerel off the beaches and in the inlets. The last couple of years the shrimp runs have been epic. You can have a great time with the guys or the kids dipping up shrimp near inlets, then steam some and use some for bait. Mangrove snapper, tarpon and snook will strike the shrimp with abandon around inlets. King and spanish mackerel will be snapping up the shrimp off inlets on early morning outgoing tides. On flats in 2-4 feet of water trout should be waiting for your
favorite soft plastic under a float. On shallower flats below Key Biscayne bonefish should put a smile on every face. Decisions aren’t just about what to catch in December. What do you want for Christmas? What should I get sons, daughters, parents and significant others? Make it all local tackle shop gift certificates. Happy holidays everyone. PESCA DE AGUA DULCE EN MIAMI by Capitán Mike Tojdowski
P

HUTCH TOUCH
by Captain Greg Hutchisson, Contributing Writer
E
¡Buena suerte! Capitán Greg Hutchisson www.hutchtouchfishing.com IG @hutchtouchfishing FB The Hutch Touch 786-320-4743

FLAMINGO by Nestor Alvisa
A

ANGLERS GET TWO MONTHS FOR GULF AJ
I
t will be another short season for amberjack in the Gulf of Mexico next year. The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council decided in late October to modify both the recreational season and commercial trip limits for greater amberjack. The result for recreational anglers is a two-month fall season, which is expected to close a few days early based on projections. The council chose to modify the recreational season so it opens on Sept. 1 and remains open through Oct. 31, unless the annual catch target is projected to be met earlier. The projected date for reaching that annual catch target is Oct. 26. The council also chose to reduce the commercial trip limit to seven fish, which is equivalent to about 210 pounds gutted weight. This framework action will be transmitted to the Secretary of Commerce for approval and implementation as soon as practicable. In anticipation that this rule may not be implemented before the beginning of the 2024 commercial fishing season, the Council requested that NOAA Fisheries implement an emergency rule to reduce the commercial trip limit to seven fish at the start of the year. Since Amendment 54 reduced catch limits by about 83 percent, and the 2023 commercial annual catch limit was exceeded, a payback provision will reduce the 2024 commercial annual catch target to 56,661 pounds whole weight. Under the current 1,000-pound trip limit, the commercial fishing season is expected to be incredibly short. For more information, go to https://gulfcouncil.org/.

Sacred Stone of the Southwest is on the Brink of Extinction
C
enturies ago, Persians, Tibetans and Mayans considered turquoise a gemstone of the heavens, believing the striking blue stones were sacred pieces of sky. Today, the rarest and most valuable turquoise is found in the American Southwest–– but the future of the blue beauty is unclear.
26 carats of genuine Arizona turquoise B.
ONLY $99
On a recent trip to Tucson, we spoke with fourth generation turquoise traders who explained that less than five percent of turquoise mined worldwide can be set into jewelry and only about twenty mines in the Southwest supply gem-quality turquoise. Once a thriving industry, many Southwest mines have run dry and are now closed. We found a limited supply of turquoise from Arizona and purchased it for our Sedona Turquoise Collection. Inspired by the work of those ancient craftsmen and designed to showcase the exceptional blue stone, each stabilized vibrant cabochon features a unique, one-of-a-kind matrix surrounded in Bali metalwork. You could drop over $1,200 on a turquoise pendant, or you could secure 26 carats of genuine Arizona turquoise for just $99. C.
Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. If you aren’t completely happy with your purchase, send it back within 30 days for a complete refund of the item price.
